I'm going to start with the only complaint I have about this place- it's too warm!! Otherwise.... THIS PLACE GETS TWO THUMBS UP AND TWO SNAPS BACK!!!! The hubs got the spare rib special and chose the Brunswick stew and baked beans as his sides. The meat was just a tad bit salty but it has great flavor and was very tender. I got the brisket which was very moist and tender. I didn't mention the fruity wood that the meats were cooked on but OMG they were deeeelish!!! Very flavorful and unique! I has the Mac and cheese and cole slaw- both excellent! We ordered the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer. Although they came out kind of bland, we added just a little salt and they were excellent. What I really liked was the fact they were not greasy. The cool thing about this place is that you can order the FHT's as a side to your meal without added cost - something I didn't notice until after I ordered this as the appetizer. No regrets though! You must try the banana pudding- it is fresh and definitely homemade and topped with REAL whipped cream and not cool whip or that canned crap. I am not a Nilla wafer fan , so the chocolate chip cookie was an added bonus. Just.Excellent. The homemade wheat bread is to die for!! We will definitely come back here- it's the best BBQ place we've been to!

Ribs were gigantic. Pretty tasty, but nothing special. They were out of biscuit on the night I went unfortunately. I liked the green tomatoes. The wine selection was really short and the one I picked was pretty bad, but that's probably my fault (not exactly the best place to order wine). The banana pudding was really good and again the portion was huge, I didn't finish it. My waiter was really nice and service was fast. A good experience, but I was expecting more.

Have been coming for years....but I was so disappointed by our visit today. The yummy pork sandwich I usually order no long comes on texas toast, but a cinnamon flavored wheat that has a very odd after taste. The collards were undercooked and therefore had not lost the bitter taste that mellows them out with a bit more simmering, while the cider vinegar taste was overpowering. The pork was moist and tender, if I bother to come back I will have to stick to cole slaw and meat...

I think this place is more at 3.5, but this is not an option... Good food and good service but nothing special... All four meals we ordered were served cold. The fried green tomatoes were the best thing we had.

I'll be back soon. The service was top notch, the food was delicious, and the ambiance was laid back and inviting. And those portions. If you want to feel like you're going to die, in a good way, eat here. To start we got the Fried Green Tomatoes with Home Made Ranch - awesome suggestion form our waitress. I love asking what's good, and this server came through. She hooked me up with a sausage sandwich with coleslaw and gouda as a platter. It was amazing. The sandwich was larger than a 12 inch sub, plus two sides and large glass of sweet tea = don't touch me for a few hours because I'm about to explode. I can't wait to do it again!

Someone told me about The Swallow at the Hollow years ago and I recently visited for the first time. The word they used to describe this place was "quaint". I have passed by it on a previous occasion trying to find it. Coming from Woodstock St., it is on the right adjacent to The Yellow House. I called to place a take out order and the person was courtesy and also read back what I ordered before the call ended. I spent almost $30 here for the platter with a half rack of ribs, two sides and a six smoked wings. I did the same at another BBQ restaurant and the food was not as good. I ordered the ribs dry (sauce on the side). The ribs were good without any sauce. I could tell that the flavor profile did not come from just hickory wood. Since fruitwood is also used, my guess is that it was apple or peach wood. The ribs were tender on inside, a little dry on the outside, but not to where it was inedible. Three styles of BBQ sauce are available. A Kansas City style sauce, vinegar based and a Carolina style mustard sauce. I never coated my ribs with the sauce, only used them for dipping. The ribs were good without any of the sauces, but they were all good. The potato salad was made with red potatoes with the skin on; it was good. The cole slaw was good also. The smoke wings were okay, I would not say they were the best that I have eaten however, they were better than some I have tasted. I did not taste any smoke flavor, but looked and tasted like they were finished on the grill and then covered in sauce. I requested a biscuit as my bread choice; it was accompanied by honey on the side. Before I left, a member of the staff showed me what I ordered to confirm that I received what I requested. The Swallow at the Hollow is worth visiting again.

Just the best place on earth for BBQ, no questions asked!! Been coming to this place for years and it's always consistently delicious!!!

Now, I would never have ventured there on my own. It was a date for sure. But he had been there before and loved their ribs so much and since I'm a huge fan of barbecue he thought it would be a great place to go. Boy was it ever, the food was really good and very tasty. (The problem is a lot of small town barbecue restaurants is that they always have the same thing on the menus and nothing ever has an exceptional taste.- not the case here)

Service here was excellent, prices reasonable, portions generous, and food delicious. Got the smoke turkey platter. Turkey was awesome, plenty of it. The highlights were the smoked wings (absolutely freaking amazing) and the chocolate chip banana pudding (a signature for them - it's clear why). If you visit this place these two things are an absolute must. Tried the ribs and pork as well and they were on the good side of average.

Favorite BBQ place to this day! I am picky when it comes to bbq. Seems like either the sauce is to wet and falls off your food or tastes wrong. This place has is ALLLL right. There's different sauces to choose from but the food (I ordered ribs) did come with their main sauce already there. The ribs were OH SO GOOD, meat fell right off the bone, mac n'cheese the best creamy side ever and the coleslaw was a nice addition too. We did come pretty late to closing but they were still pretty packed. Service wasn't the quickest but she was adequate. I had to order the friend green tomatoes because you can't find those around a lot and I have been craving them for months. I thought they were good but not as good as I had hoped. I thought the batter(?) could use a little more "umph/spice". AND they could have brought more. Only one tomato per person? I ordered the rib plate with mac n' cheese and coleslaw and wasn't disappointed at all! The ribs....well..... just too good to write about. You have to try them for yourself. The meat was fall off the bone and the sauce just said it all. The mac n' cheese was super creamy and delish and the coleslaw had a nice touch of spice and not too soppy with mayonnaise. Everyone else at our table thought their food was good. Not "great" because they're not foodies. My husband HATES BBQ but was a trooper and came with me to try it out. He hates BBQ sauce so much he ordered his ribs plane but when he tried mine with the sauce he dug right in. Will definitely be back! Good BBQ is hard to find!

Now this is one place for some real good food! Has a rustic but comfortable surrounding. The Fried Green Tomato's, the wings, the ribs and the brunswick stew are just fabulous. Need to get there early to get a place. This place fills up fast, real fast!

We were recommended to try this place out while we were in town a few days for a wedding. Approaching the venue, it's a shabby looking barn from the outside, and the inside has the character to match the exterior, which to me is a strong indicator that you're about to have a damn fine meal. I'm not from these parts, but I believe I know good BBQ when I taste it. I ordered the 'Homemade Smoked Sausage' platter, with mac & cheese, fried green tomatoes, and a biscuit. Maybe it's just me, but there is something magical about well made sausage. You can put whatever sauce you want on it or eat it plain; any way you take it, you're gonna like it. Everything on my platter was delicious. I also got to try the coleslaw and baked beans, and between the two of us at our table, both plates were practically licked clean. I'd love to come back and try a little bit of everything. Worth the trip to the Atlanta, GA 'burbs, for sure.

I'd probably lean more to 3.5 actually, but since that's not an option I'll lean down. The ribs are the star here. They are very tender, fall off the bone. Everyone recommended them and they are very good, for them alone I'd say four, but pulled pork wasn't as good. The sides are actually solid, got mac and cheese, but more unique even was the ranch with the fried green tomatoes, buttermilky. Our waitress recommended it, and I'm not a FGT person, but with the ranch it was good. The banana pudding was also an interesting take even if there was a bit too much whipped cream compared to pudding. Solid, but for pulled pork there is better elsewhere. Ribs though are very tender and good.

I noticed that there was no a review of the chicken wings. So I added a picture and proceeded to try the wings. First impression was they looked great. This is always a first for me. I like them to look good. As I started to try them right away, I was disappointed with the dryness. The were average wings. There was not air of smoked flavor underneath all the mustard sauce. Something else that surprised me was the mustard sauce tastes faintly like Thai peanut sauce. It was a unique flavor but not enough to help them get better than average. I say pass on the wings. They are many better options available.

Definitely the best BBQ place in Atlanta area! There's always a long wait on weekends or holidays. But it's worth waiting! The ribs are just SO GOOD! The home-made pudding wouldn't disappoint you either. Remember to get there early. Not just to get early in line. The parking space is also very limited.

It's been over a year since my last trip to Alpharetta, and one of the things I remembered was that I really liked it here. I was going out to dinner with some local business partners, and when they suggested that we go here I knew that I should definitely come back. Long story short, it was better than I remembered. Three delicious barbecue sauce choices, quick and friendly service, delicious homemade bread, wonderfully light fried green tomatoes, and incredible, tender meat. This place is a staple when I come down here. Roswell is the bomb.

Great food, large portions, very tasty. The staff was friendly, the wait was not too bad, and the atmosphere was very family friendly. Kids portions were decent. Best mac n cheese ever! Smoked spare ribs were great. Fried green tomatoes were superb. I didn't even get heartburn! Yay!

OMG.. Ask if they have their off menu special. Beef ribs smoked for over 24 hours. Amazing flavor and fall off the bone dream!!!

Used to come here a lot when I was working in Alpharetta. Awesome little hole in the wall BBQ place tucked behind all of the hustle and bustle of roswell. Not too sure if the food quality is still the same though. Still a good place to dine so I'm giving it 3 stars for the experience. We ordered what seemed like one of everything on the menu today: -BBQ pork slices were dry -Ribs were a little over done and shriveled (had a nice crunch) -sausage was tough -portobello mushroom sandwich was different and tasty -Mac and cheese was good! -biscuits and honey were delicious -cole slaw was apparently good -French fries were cooked perfectly -Brunswick stew was devoured by table

Food was mediocre but service was excellent. We ordered a ribs, mac and cheese, sausage, fried green tomatoes, brunswick stew, and they got cornbread for us from across the street. The ribs were dry, mac and cheese was ok but far from the guilt-inducing cheesy buttery goodness I usually expect. Out of everything, I liked the brunswick stew.

$14.00 PLUS TAX FOR A PORK SANDWICH AND FRENCH FRIES. That's a joke, BBQ was dry, fries were undercooked. BBQ sauces were thin as if watered down. Friends $17.50 half rack of ribs were dry as well. Wow the place has change since I last ate there about 2 years ago. There's a better option for BBQ lunch south on hwy 9 near Roswell Sq.

  • Cassie D.

This place is great. The chopped pro was moist and flavorful. The mac'n'cheese and potato salad are the best sides. The biscuit was dry and hard - stick with the Texas Toast. The beans are okay. The ribs were tender enough that the meat fell right off the bones. And the pies were amazing. So. Good. This is a definite must-stop when we're back in town.

Great ribs and sweet tea. Mac n Cheese was very good as well.

Just had lunch here and the bbq was very good. The Mac n cheese was beyond delicious...but 1 suggestion is to please add a changing table to the bathroom. The little silver stand isn't enough and there were babies at almost every table in the restaurant. That would make it a perfect experience.

Great food, great service, great atmosphere. It can be a little loud when the band is playing but it's good music.

My friend wanted to meet up here and I was a little hesitant on trying BBQ especially when I'm from TX. I ordered the ribs and they were ok, I had to lather quite a Bit of sauce on it. There are three types of BBQ sauces on the table and was really disappointed that our waitress didn't take the time to explain what the difference was between them. The sides were tasty. However, the chcolate chip banana pudding was rather amazing! Btw, it's huge so make sure you share it!!!! The chocolate chips are delightful along with the banana pudding.

Awesome ribs in a nice setting, SATH is also cool for live country/southern music on the evenings. Being the barbecue sister restaurant of Greemwood's, you get the benefit of ordering some stuff (fish, for instance) from accross the street for non-barbecue eaters. I always go for the half-ribs, mac n cheese and the bruswick stew (just a cup...). But truly all smoked meats here are well prepared and good size portions. Even the kids sizes!

Was visiting Roswell and wanted to go to an authentic BBQ place. This was it. Food was really good and I would have rated a 5, but the veggies were dreadful. Guess I shouldn't go to BBQ and order food that's good for you.

Went here with a group of friends Sat evening, weather was perfect so we sat outside, cant remember the servers name but very friendly as well as funny too. We all ordered something different and it was ALL good. I ordered the chopped pork platter with mac and cheese and fried green tomatoes, now I am from the south and I can make fried green tomatoes so these I have to critique a little. They were cut a little too thick for me, I couldn't cut them with my fork and the butter knife wasn't much better but everything else was great. I LOVE the big glasses of tea that they give you. Still a great bbq place in quaint downtown Roswell!!

Overall this is a great BBQ place! Fried green tomatoes, quite good! The pork has a great smokey flavor, Brisket is tender and has great flavor as well ( though it is not good as leftovers) Their biscuits - really good! My only complaint is that the BBQ sauces just aren't for me.. maybe too vinegary.. not sure but it's just not for me. We will definitely go back regardless!

I decided to update my review, since the past few times I've been the ribs have been on point, and the service has been much better. The ribs really are worth the trip, and I love that you can get sides sent over from Greenwood's.

If you're in the Atlanta area and like BBQ you need to try this place! I've been here several times and have not been disappointed. This time we had the fried green tomatoes and biscuits to start. The tomatoes were good, the biscuits are awesome. For dinner I had the chopped pork sandwich with cole slaw; both were very good and the portions were HUGE. This was one of those meals where you're disappointed when your full since you can't enjoy anymore. I look forward to enjoying the leftovers. The decor is very "rustic eclectic" and comfortable and the staff was very friendly and helpful. This is a great little joint hidden in the middle of downtown Roswell. It's certainly worth a visit, I know I'll be back.

The Food: I don't see why there are rave reviews for this place. I found the food average. I had the Brisket Platter with French Fries and Cole Slaw. The meat was barely warm and dry. The Texas Toast the only saving grace of the order. The fries were decent--warm but not hot. My gf had the half rack of ribs with Brunswick stew and fried green tomatoes. The rib I tried was only OK. The Service: Above average and the reason for 3 stars instead of 2. The Atmosphere: Seems like a converted barn which doesn't bother me in the least (if the food is good). The floors looked like thin plywood and creaked. Each time a server passed behind me my chair bounced. Noise level for this early Sunday evening was high. Final note: Was it good enough for me to come back? An absolute no.

Solid little BBQ joint. The Brunswick stew is off the chain kinda good and the baby back ribs are excellent. Seriously all the sides are delish. Collards and super tasty and try the Mack and cheese too. Typically they have a few specials and they are always really very good.

Does it matter that I was on a television show eating @ The Swallow? Sure it does, but that doesn't mean I am going to be easy on them in their review, right? I've been going to The Swallow for about ten years now, due in part to a co-worker of mine who knows his meat. I am definitely not a carne-seur, but I know good meat when it finds it's way into my belly. Large burly hunks of pork with a couple sauces to suit your taste buds, and those biscuits. I have dreams about those biscuits, and they bring lil' tubs of honey with em too if you ask nicely. Someone in another review said something about their sides, and that person was abso-effen-lutely correct when they said that their side are no-joke. Bring your A-game when you come to eat or else you will be leaving with tons of meals for the rest of the week, as Swallow wants to crush your soul with meat and sides. Yeah, I was on a television show for Swallow, so whatever I've written might be biased a bit, but then why-not five stars? Because the parking sucks, and the waits are long. I want my meat and I want it now! It's large quantities of barbecued meat with giant fries, and Brunswick stew... I suppose a 20 minute wait shall suffice.

The house salad is fresh and delicious! Though I ordered the salad, I picked at everyone else plates: the ribs, pork and mac-n-cheese -- all of which were awesome. Tender, flavorful and perfectly seasoned all the way. You can't go wrong with the BBQ at this quaint spot. Oh, and order the fried green tomatoes. You won't be disappointed!

  • Robert H.

The barbecue here is excellent. Wish I could say the same for their beans and vinegar soaked collard greens though. I would definitely recommend this place for barbecue lovers. I've only eaten take out here but the atmosphere in and around this spot is pretty nice as well. The beans and collard greens are an acquired taste but the potato salad is a safe bet.

I'm on a quest to try the "best" bbq places in the area, and my focus is brisket. This is an idyllic setting, as one could eat on the front porch and enjoy the bamboo trees. Though this place is highly rated, it didn't meet my expectations. I ordered the sliced beef sandwich (was told it was brisket-----I'm not entirely sure). The meat was dense, dry, and hardly any marbling, or flavor. It was likely overcooked. Thankfully, two of the three sauces were good with the beef. The texas toasted bread was an excellent complement to the beef. I ordered a side of cole slaw, and this was excellent. Good texture, and long shreds of cabbage. Sandwich was $9, and the slaw was $3. A glass of draft was $4, and total was $17 with tax. Service, as reported elsewhere in these posts, was amateurish, and unprofessional. Mostly college age kids working here, and their interest is obviously not servicing their customers. No need for me to return...there are more places to try out.

  • Cass H.

Eh! 4 occupied tables (no more than 4 tops) but service still remained slow. Chopped beef platter had more fat than expected. Batter used in fried green tomatoes lacked any pizazz & the buttermilk dressing as sauce wasn't going to spice it up. Disappointing.

Friends of ours took us here when we were in town visiting. I'm not a big fan of pork, but this is THE best pulled pork around! Everyone else in my group ordered the half-rack of ribs, and were raving about how they were the best. Absolutely recommend visiting! The food is incredible, and atmosphere is really cute, and the staff are awesome!

First time here. Not a big place so would want to time your arrival at lunch time carefully otherwise may be waiting. Service is good but not drive thru fast, so don't expect to be in and out in 30 minutes. Had the Pork, smoked turkey and smoked sausage. Pork had good smoke however it was basically all fat...would not bother ordering that again. Smoked turkey had okay taste but not alot of smoke. Smoked sausage is homemade, had a very black pepper heat to it, tasted okay at first but after a few bites thought better of finishing it. Mustard sauce was okay but the Kansas City BBQ sauce was a winner, sweet and great flavor. Bread was homemade which was a nice touch, but I am hard-pressed to say anything positive about it, not much taste. Biscuits looked really good too as did the salads (I know....salad at a BBQ place but they really look good). The overall winner was the mac and cheese which had amazing crust and flavor. This place is very expensive and I have to say overall I was not particularly impressed with the BBQ we had, not sure I would bother coming back to try anything else based on the first experience. Wanted to like the place since I love BBQ but this was not a good experience.

The first thing that stood out was the smell of smoke as you approach the front door. Next is the interior. The atmosphere is hard to describe, but it would be the perfect setting for a movie based in the 1840's south. After looking at the menu, I wanted to order one of everything but settled for ribs with sides of mac and cheese and fries. I also ordered smoked wings for an appetizer which may have been the best decision I've made in my life with the exception of divorcing my wife. I actually placed two more orders to take home (wings not wives). I taste tested the sauces (house made barbecue, honey mustard, and a vinegar based sauce) and each were excellent. The mac and cheese reminded me of what my list creating mother makes and the ribs were fall off the bone tender. The only other observation I had was with the service. The waiter was, by his own admission, on his second day, but you would think it was his first day speaking with other human beings. His awkwardness was palpable and pretty funny. I wanted to goof on him but I prefer my barbecue spit-free.

  • Lindze M.

My only complaint about this place would be how crowded it gets, but its no wonder with its amazing taste and ambiance. The ribs are smokey and full of flavor, the pulled pork is classic, yet not boring. All the sides are pretty good and their fried green tomatoes are amazing. Be sure to save room for some of that famous Greenwood's pie! The atmosphere is great---it looks like you just stepped into a Midwestern barn for a neighborhood BBQ party. The live music is varied and great, and everyone is friendly. I always take my out of town visitors here, and all of them have raved about it and asked to visit again when they come back to town. If it wouldn't make me weigh 900 lbs, I'd eat here daily!

Great place to eat. Ribs were good, beans were interesting. Atmosphere was deep BBQ and band worthy. We went to lunch, but saw the stage and would love to go back for a show. Also, great off the beaten path. Do it. Dave

The smoked chicken wings are awesome! Sweet and spicy. I also had heirloom tomatoes in a balsamic vinegar dressing and Mac and cheese which were both very good. Huge sandwiches and tasty too. Will definitely be back.

The pork in my chopped platter had a lot of unavoidable fat, though my wife's chopped pork sandwich did not. Collards were very flavorful, home-made bread was delicious, mac-n-cheese was very tasty (creamy, not baked), and fried green tomatoes were excellent. It was great sitting outside for lunch as well.

  • Tom N.

Loved the atmosphere here. We sat outside on a fall evening and it felt great. Sitting outside would have been more enjoyable if the ground was level! I mean c'mon add a little fill or something. The waiter was good kept our drinks full and brought everything out quickly. They gave us an appetizer fried green tomatoes when we ordered just a side. Later the side came also and we were not charged for the app. This was nice and the fried green tomatoes were the best I have ever had. I gave it 3 stars because it was ok but the 22 dollar rack of ribs my girlfriend (at the time) and I had was completely forgettable. The meat did not fall off the bone at all what little meat there was had to be torn off the bone. The ribs were not much better than the manager special you can get at Kroger for 8 bucks. I wanted to like them I was not out to give this place a thrashing but the food was really not great. The baked beans were different in a bad way. They didn't taste fresh. I am glad I tried this place that so many people have raved about. The best I can say is go for the atmosphere and not for the food. That sounds ridiculous but really if you love BBQ go somewhere else.

Good barbecue. There is a lot left to be desired with the seating, but the food definitely makes up for it.

Went in after having read about it while getting ready to move to Roswell from Oakland, CA and liked it upon sight. Metal roof with some rust, gravel parking lot, outdoor seating with tons of fans to beat the heat if that's your choice. Brought Mrs and little girl and took a seat inside. I'm not a fan of TV's inside of eating places but it went along with the very informal interior (check out the slanted/off kilter entryway). Three different squeeze bottles of sauce options, Teresa (sp?) was our waitress and she answered all of our questions and told us quite a bit about the sister restaurant across the street and had many helpful suggestions about places to go in the area as new residents...she was great. The beer-New Holland kolsch-style ale, very good with BBQ, a touch pricey and I saw a sign saying $3 Pints On Fridays...that'll be my m.o. next time! The food-I got the chopped pork platter, slaw and biscuit which was great and Teresa recommended some Georgia honey for it...good move! Pork was tender, slaw had a little bit of sweetness. Good. Mrs got the sausage platter, which took 15 min to arrive, but dang was it worth it. More like an Italian-style with fennel in it but really hot and juicy, nice and smoky. She had the baked 3 beans and collard greens, which were the only thing we had I'm not keen on having again. Everything we ate except the bland greens was great. Little girl, actually, was ordered a childs pork plate that came with some really creamy mac and cheese and I'm telling you this plate is enough for a small adult. She had a big ole heap of meat on her plate, Teresa brought out a milk for her that, as a parent, I really appreciated having the lid and straw option for. Overall summary? Yes, I'll be going back. Sausage next time! PS-we had the fried green tomatoes as an app, very good and loved the ranch-style sauce that came with them.

I have too many BBQ places in my mind to compare with this venue. I stay away from writing any negative feedbacks so let me just say that Swallow at the Hollow is not a bad place at all and the atmosphere is very lively. I just wouldn't come here for more specifically, the RIBS. Not because their ribs were not good but because I already have a different venue that does ribs really great. BUT, I will compliment this restaurant for their delicious and memorable tasting grilled chicken wings. No other venue can compare with the wings at Swallow at the Hollow. I highly recommend their wings when you are ever coming here to eat.

My coworkers and I were directed towards this place by our hotel. What a great recommendation! I am from Georgia (land of pulled pork and sauces) but live in Texas (famous for smoked meats). The point is that I know (and miss) great pulled pork, and I was on a mission to find it. This place doesn't even have a sign, but it has a gravel driveway. Good sign. Most of us ordered the pulled pork, and one person ordered a brisket sandwich. The pulled pork was VERY good and quite plentiful. I also ordered fried green tomatoes -the best I've had. They also have amazing turnip greens!! My co-workers also raved about the mac and cheese. The biscuits were also delicious. I strategically ate half my pork because I wanted to try dessert. Everyone else had cleaned their plates and couldn't fathom dessert...until I asked the server to describe and recommend some desserts. The servers hand carried our desserts up the gravel road from a bakery next door. I split the chocolate pie with a co-worker, and the rest of the group had blackberry pie. The servings are 1/4 a pie, so splitting is very easy. In fact, I also had a small slice of the blackberry pie curtesy of my co-workers. The chocolate pie had a rich, dark taste that was amazing. The blackberry pie was also good. The crust was awesome-pastry chef quality. At first, I thought the menu seemed just a little pricey for bbq, but after I saw the portions and tasted the quality, I thought the prices were pretty reasonable. If you are in Alpharetta looking for BBQ or unique holes in the wall, definitely give The Swallow at the Hollow a try.

Hands down best BBQ in Roswell. Their brunswick stew is lacking, but I make my own so I am particular. Their wings are AMAZING. Seriously. You can't go wrong with this place. Love the Just-Stepped-Out-Of-True-Blood atmosphere. Come hungry because the portions are huge. NOM-erific!

So I see all of the great reviews of this place, and I wonder if my rating system is conservative, if others' rating systems are liberal or if I just had different experiences than everyone else? The food is definitely tasty - I have no argument with that. But the service is always lacking. I've been maybe half a dozen times and every time was slow - even when there wasn't a crowd. When there was a crowd, the service was exceptionally slow and the place was like 100 degrees. It's an average value, but a bit on the expensive side for what you get. Go there for lunch if you have more than an hour for lunch and have the money for it (I'm a value-hound). The parking kinda sucks too.

Been to this place twice and they ran out of what I wanted to order BOTH times. Don't want to take my chances for a third time.

There are so many ways to do BBQ, so I'm grading mostly on quality rather than taste. I prefer dry ribs (little or no sauce), and you can ask for them that way, but I tried their ribs at their default with a sweet sauce (but not overly sweet) with a hint of molasses (I think). They also had mustard, spicy vinegar, and tangy tomato styles on the table. The meat was tender with just the right amount of fat. I loved the chunky fries and they were crispy (most places fail and under-cook this style of fry). The Texas Toast (also called cabin bread when un-toasted) was homemade and had a lot of character. I liked it, but would have really loved it with garlic butter to give it some zip (I failed to ask if this was an option). The mac & cheese was truly excellent and obviously homemade as well. My wife had the pulled pork on the Texas toast and really liked it. The slaw is of the vinegar style and we're more of the mayo style. It had some subtle flavors and a hint of fruit (perhaps made with apple vinegar). All the staff were very friendly. We dined outside on the patio, but chose behind the bamboo for the hide-away feel and also for the benefit of the ceiling fan. They also have a picnic area. The interior is very rustic and posters advertise the different venues (all country that I could see) that are offered there. Initial service was quick but getting refills was a problem during part of the meal. I also am always baffled by how long it takes to get served BBQ considering it's already cooked. I think they were having some trouble and I heard one of the servers mention "like pulling teeth." Despite these two service hiccups the staff were working hard to make customers happy. I would definitely come back, but it will be awhile as it's on the expensive side (both our meals were just over $40 after tip). Be aware that the signage in the area can be confusing as there was a Swallow at the Hollow banner hanging on the Greenwood! Kudos to the Greenwood staff who cheerily directed us to the right spot.

The SATH is amazing. I absolutely love coming here at lunch! The food is always great! The prices seem a little high but that's only because you get so much food! I would recommend this place!

Bill and crew at the Swallow in the Hollow are still pushing out OUSTANDING dishes with incredible sides. Classical ingredients and classical technique. Sit at the Bar to catch the action of a well executed kitchen. Nothing but hustle there. Read a couple of "bizarre and somewhat negative"reviews Here but they appear to be "snipers" as everything we experienced was delicious, service-excellent. Nice job Bill! I have not been here enough nor at Bill's other Restaurant across the street " Greenwoods" But I will be and you should too. I wasn't there for some fusion effort but ordered 1/2 slab of incredible Ribs, Mac and Cheese(Amazing!!) and shared several other sides and mains. Couldn't go wrong other than I ate it all and really should have taken half home with me. I am a fan. Just gotta love owners like Bill busting it for us here in Roswell. A real professional and are really great experience. Try it for yourself and you'll be calling your friends both ITP and OTP. Wow!

The sides, it is all about the sides.... They are all amazing with the Brunswick stew being my personal favorite. I also had the collared greens as a "special side" last time and they were the best I've ever had - out of the garden fresh!!!!! And the Texas toast is amazing.... The meat is all above average, but not WOW. Very lean sausage, tender pork, and very solid pork ribs. But it is the sides that make this place worth going to. Have I mentioned the sides??? Service is solid and the place feels like a BBQ joint, The live music is always good, and hasn't been overpowering when we've gone. although I've never been there when a cover was charged.

Barbecue was pretty good. The serving size are pretty big. There weren't too many different barbecue sauces to try, but the pork was tender and deelish. Mac & cheese was good. Tell them someone at your table has a birthday. If you are lucky, you will die laughing. Bring a video recorder.

A solid 3.5 stars. I went yesterday after a long time of debating on going with my boyfriend. Finally, yesterday was a good day for BBQ. When we arrived, I was unsure if the place was even open, but as soon as we walked in, it was like another world. Bustling and cozy. The restaurant wasn't very busy when we went, but the staff were all in a good mood and very welcoming. Service was a little slow as was the food coming out of the kitchen, but luckily we weren't in a big hurry. I got the smoked sausage platter with mac and cheese and tomatoes and cucumbers with a biscuit. Way too much food to eat. The cucumbers and tomatoes were fresh and tasty. The mac and cheese was cheesy and warm and gooey. Yum. Biscuit with honey, very good. The main event, the sausage, was dry. Very flavorful but I felt like I was eating a log. Jason got the chopped pork with a side salad and fried green tomatoes with texas toast. He raved about it all, and what I did get a taste of was awesome. When we return I will get what he had for sure and leave satisfied.

Yum and super-yum. The service was friendly and efficient, and the food DELICIOUS. We went earlier in the day (for lunch) on a Sunday, so it wasn't too crowded when we were seated. I can't speak for times when the restaurant might be busier. Unlike many BBQ places, this restaurant offers some nice non-meat options, and plenty of variety with sides. You can be as healthy (or unhealthy) as you want and still get a tasty meal.

I am not a huge fan of barbeque, but Swallow at the Hollow offers good food in large portions. Plan to go with a huge appetite. Most people site at large picnic tables with bench seats, but if you are alone or a couple, you may get a table of your own. They do have a vegetarian entree (portobello mushroom with smoked Gouda cheese) if you have a vegetarian in your group. One thing I like at the Swallow is they have beef barbeque, something almost impossible to find at most barbeque restaurants I've eaten at around Atlanta, and they have a nice selection of sides and sauces. Service is friendly. On the down side, the place is very noisy. So if you want to have civil conversation, get take out.

This place has over a hundred reviews and its at 4 stars? I think it should be at 5 stars cause this place is FINGER LICKING GOOD! The place was packed with a line out the door. I don't care what these other Yelpers are sayings. If they don't have 5 stars for this place, their arrogant, snooty, people who are looking to lift their nose higher than yours. Swallow at the Hollow is FANTASTIC! If you're looking for a restaurant with a dress code where jackets are required, where a live orchestra quartet is playing and people's pinkies are up when holding their drinks, STAY AWAY cause we don't want you here. This place is a place where you can get some home cook southern style food! Toss your utensils aside and get ready to get some sauce in between those nails! The service is fast and kind and the environment is fun! I went there for my birthday celebration and I took a party of 15 people. They had plenty of seating for all of us...though were a little separated, but I didn't mind. Everyone at my table had different things, but personally, I went for their half rack with a side of mac'n'cheese and fries. ALL REAL GOOD!!! The meat was fall-off-the-bone tender with a smoky flavor that made you more hungry with every bite. The mac'n'cheese was super good too! My girlfriend got the Pit Smoked Portabella w/ Smoked Gouda and Fried Green Tomatoes. That had the most amazing mixture of flavors! Like I said in my "About Me" section, my girlfriend writes better reviews than me and has eaten at better places than me, so I trust her choices in food. So if you can't believe me when I say that her entree was good, believe her cause that portabella with smoked gouda and fried green tomatoes was excellent. If you're looking for a great place to eat with friends and family and you dont care about looking like a fool with sauce on their face while enjoying great food, go to Swallow at the Hollow! And if you dont enjoy your experience or the food you ate, well, shut up and screw you cause something's wrong with you!

This place makes for a great stop if you are spending a day in the north burbs. The word rustic comes to mind. Has a small town communal ambiance which you are not going to find at in-town 'cue establishments. I enjoyed the chopped pork a bit more than the ribs. The chopped pork were a bit less smoky and fatty than expected, but flavorful nevertheless. Ribs sit on the drier side (though certainly not dry rubbed) for my taste. The sauce on the table is interesting...I assume they are barbecue sauce, but look and taste a lot like vinaigrette, only a little thicker and sweeter. There's no other kind of sauce on the table so I decided this must be for the 'cue and used it authoritatively. Made my pork tangy and moist. Very nice! I just hope no one will come wagging finger at me and say sir you are pouring salad dressing on your pork. Sides and bread are generally outstanding. You can choose from three kinds of bread and all are deliciously made. It's not like the limp white toasts that for example Fat Matt uses. Baked beans are sublime! Try it. The only underwhelming side dish is the Brunswick Stew, a bit watery and bland. Sweet tea tastes like home brewed and gets refilled quickly. They have a pretty big stage for performance and have schedules all posted up. Looks like a good time. More country than blues though. Overall, beans and breads impressed me the most. The 'cues themselves, very good, but not necessarily the best.

The best barbecue I've had in a looonnng while. And the atmosphere fits the food, too! In a very rustic-ish cabinlike building, they have music during some evenings, which I am sure is a knee slappin' good time. I went with the pulled pork plate with coleslaw and potato salad (though deep in my heart, I really wanted the fried green tomatoes. But after three days of fast food bingeing, not a smart choice), and was seriously impressed. Some dining neighbors got a crazy combination - they have a bbq salad, which is a huge mound of BBQ humping a giant plate of lettuce... the ultimate in the 'opposites attract' theory. This joint is far, far away from the big city, folks. But next time you hear the Call of the 'Cue or need to do some suburban frolicking, hit up the Swallow. You will leave stuffed full of pork goodness.

My family and I have been coming to SATH for over 10 years. If someone had told me I would ever rate them only 2 stars I would have told them they were crazy! Well, today, I gave out the two stars and that is generous. I would have sworn that Mr. Greenwood had sold the place and it was under new management! Awhile back I was really disappointed that he took down all the autographed pictures that lined the walls. Then they got rid of the live music! The guy/gal that they had playing guitar with oldies and country was awesome and sorely missed. He was the reason to come for BBQ on Sundays. The music is back, but I felt like I was at a Jewish wedding or bar/bat mitzvah or a Russian music festival! It was just awful and totally not the right music for that setting. I asked the waitress if it was always like this and she said that this particular band (I use that term loosely) had been there the past three Sundays because Mr. Greenwood liked that band in particular. They were so squeaky and loud it was like Kenny G on speed! Please God make them stop. The service was excellent, so no complaints there. Something has changed about the chopped pork. It is almost too moist. It doesn't have that little bit of spicy char at the edges that it used to. I cannot put my finger on it, but it was just not that good. I much prefer 'Cue in Alpharetta, Dreamland, Slope's or Spiced Right and I definitely did not used to feel that way. The sides were good as always and I still love the biscuits and fried green tomatoes. We didn't get dessert, but I can only hope they haven't messed with the banana pudding. It might be awhile before I go back and see if it is what I remember, because too much has changed. Good thing to note, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

I hadn't been here for over a year probably, and their prices have doubled and quantity and quality really slipped. My portobella sandwich was salty and was not accompanied by anything, not the mustardy dressing that used to come on it and not even a single pickle. There are so many quality barbeque restaurants out there, don't waste your time or your hard earned money!

OK there are several types of bbq. So, saying one is good is not good enough. You have to describe what you like. I don't have to have sauce. I believe the way that the meat is cooked is the most important thing. However, if I have sauce I like an even mix of sweet and spicy. My favorite in store bbq is kc masterpiece. That being said you should not be going to the swallow for the bbq you should be going there for the sides. I went here with two guys who consider themselves food aficionados. They had the half and full slab of the beef ribs. I had a pulled beef sandwich. The portions were huge. The meat though was just okay. My sandwich was without sauce and definitely needed some because the meat was dry. The waitress described the three sauces on the table as the good one (not the best one mind you), the southwestern mustard, and the vinagrette. I chose the good one. It was okay. Quality similar to that of kc masterpiece. Coleslaw was yummy though (it had fresh black pepper in it). The tomatoes were too ripe for me but the batter was yummy. The toast GI-NORMOUS and buttery heart attack good. Biscuits were good but different from KFC so don't expect that or you will be disappointed. I did like the ambiance (mid day no live country music thanks) even though they had fox news on one tv. If I lived near roswell I may go there again. But for me it wasn't good enough to make the trek from midtown.

Damn, this is good barbeque. We arrived on a Saturday night and the place was packed with a half hour wait for an outdoor table. Eventually we were seated, but we were sweating and getting eaten alive by the bugs. We asked for bug spray after we saw the waiter offering some to neighboring tables. Now as far as the food goes - the meat was delicious. The ribs were fall-off-the bone tender and juicy, and the pulled pork melt-in-your mouth - so soft you barely had to chew it. You add the sauce yourself, and you will need a lot of it - and a lot of napkins, too. Don't dress up, and be prepared to sweat and eat and wipe off your hands all at the same time (if it's summer)....What a mess. Not the fanciest way to go, but worth it for the great food. Mac and cheese was creamy and on the mushy side, needed more salt. I enjoyed the potato salad better, which was cold and heavy on the mustard, but, with its sour flavor, a perfect complement to the sweetness of the barbeque sauce. Five stars for the food, one star off for the barnyard-style eating conditions and slow service on a weekend night.

Such a cool BBQ joint. theswallowatthehollow.com Went for my cuz's birthday bash! This is a charming place in a neat section of Roswell (lot of good dinning around here). The BBQ was excellent, and served wtih very large portions! The particular band we heard the night we were there came down from Nashville, and were great guitarists.. one particular guy from Australia really wailed. But it's not a place to gab once the music starts.. you pretty much just chill, eat and listen...

Rednecks beware! I have scoured Atlanta and surrounding areas for years to find the best barbecue around (See angelfire.com/ga2/bbq ). Swallow has always been in my "Top Five". However, be warned: this is much more like "foodie barbecue" than "redneck barbecue". Suits me just fine. The first time I went, I had the sexy machine-sliced pork, fresh homemade bread and gargantuan (i.e., could feed three or more) chocolate chip banana pudding. My group was so captivated by the food that no one spoke. The varied sauces, the beautiful smoke rings, and the perfect slices were all hypnotic. But it gets better. I had business nearby around lunchtime one day. I finished my work and headed straight for Green Street. I jockeyed for parking (gravel lot), walked in, and got a whiff of the glorious smoke. By this time, I was starving. I sat down on a barstool and suddenly remembered that it was Friday during Lent - no meat! I was crushed. I looked at the menu and saw the portabella with gouda and fried green tomato sandwich. I ordered it with a side of mac & cheese. It was so good that I almost wept. I'm not big on portabella, tomatoes or gouda cheese, but this was one of the best things I've ever eaten. I get misty just thinking about it. If you don't object to barbecue with a foodie pedigree, this is definitely a "best in class" in Atlanta. Be sure to bring your crying towel - it's THAT good.

Meh. That's the word that comes to mind. I got the special which was half a chicken. It was nothing to write home about. The three baked beans were interesting. The potato salad was pretty good. It was too much food for lunch. The waiter commented that I had a lot of food left *whoops*. I also got the chocolate chip banana pudding which was the best thing I had despite being made up of 1/2 whipped cream. The service was very good. Not worth a $25 lunch IMO.

Best ribs around! Great food and service. It can be packed but they always find away to keep up the good service! Mac and Cheese is an always when I eat here! Wish they had a better beer selection but that's just me being picky. The banana pudding is the only way to end a meal here. ..... now im hungry

Some really good southern cookin' found here! I love that you probably wouldn't know about this place or you'd pass it on the street if you weren't from the area. Lucky for me I have family who live close. The restaurant is totally rustic and back woodsy. I enjoyed my pulled pork BBQ, the mac and cheese, baked beans, and cole slaw. Everything was so tasty! We also tried the fried green tomatoes. Really not up my alley, but hey, when in Rome..... Definitely check this place out if you're in the ATL.

Mom and I accidentally entered this restaurant, instead of Greenwoods across the street. Mom was excited because she smelled BBQ. I was not so excited. Mom tends to render me brainless at times, so I went along to maker her happy. Fortunately for me (since the only meat I eat is fish), one of the specials of the day was a crawfish cake sandwich. Mom had a pulled pork plate with brunswick stew and fried green tomatoes. I had the crawfish sandwich with mac & cheese. Mom's platter was enormous. My food was a reasonable portion, especially since I didn't eat the sandwich bread. I'm picky about mac & cheese, so I was surprised that I found it to be pretty good, considering the runny texture. The flavor was very nice. The crawfish sandwich was quite good with tons of crawfish, but it wasn't really a cake. It was a little mushy. Mom loved her bbq. This place is a serious bbq joint, flies and all. Service was great. I do think that $38 was a little too much for 2 lunches with iced tea, since this place is a dive. The food is fresh though and it is high quality.

They probably served 300 people while I was there! -The staff was fun and friendly -The prices are around $15 per person -Meat has great smoked flavor -Ribs were tender with great flavor -Best stew I have ever had in my life! -The wait was long but considering the amount of people it was worth it -The clientele was up scale -The sauce was thin but good flavor -All sides were made from scratch even the bread! -Loved it!

  • Rob P.

Pros: The meat was excellent. Cons: I didn't like any of the 3 sauces at all, and the meat was tender but dry and definitely needs sauce. The place was 90 degrees inside, can't say I like eating and sweating.

I finally gave this place a second chance recently. But only because I had family in town and he said he saw a review for some AWESOME BBQ place in Roswell but he of course forgot the name. He wanted to try and find it, asking if I knew of any place, and this is the place on Yelp with the best reviews and I though it would be an excuse to try again for myself. Again, I was not impressed with the food, although the service was better this time. My Dad also was not too impressed overall, although he liked the pork. He ended up taking most of it home and putting Williamson Bros. BBQ sauce that we bought at the store on it because he knew he loved their sauce! Remembering my experience last time, I thought I would play it safe. I had a Portobello Sandwich with Green Tomato. It was the first time I'd tried a Green Tomato and the sandwich was good, once I took the Green Tomato off. I had fries and coleslaw for sides knowing it is pretty difficult to fail at either of those. The slightly spicy coleslaw was probably the best thing in the meal.

I've only ever taken carry out from this place and after reading some of the other reviews, I'm sure this will be my next dine-in stop. I work close to here and we often order carry out orders. It is consistently delicious and I'm always bragging to people who have never tried it. The collard greens are the best I've ever had and the macaroni and cheese should probably be illegal or come with free bypass surgery. I could go on and on about the meal but really the menu item at this restaurant that leaves me slobbering on myself is the chocolate chip banana pudding. Holy. Mother. It is DIVINE. Do you hear me?! I can't talk about it anymore. I'm getting all worked up.

I have to say - I just love this place. It was laid back and the atmosphere was perfect. Now I was there during a Saturday lunch so it wasn't overcrowded. The server recommended the child's plate for me - just enough. I finished it all. I had the chopped pork sandwich and a side of fried green tomatoes. They had an array of sauces (I prefer the sweeter side) but they had the carolina vinegar as well. The sweet tea to me was perfect - sweet but not overly (like me). And the server asked if I wanted a to go cup (always a plus). I got a 1/2 rack of baby backs to go so I can't wait to sink my teeth into them.

Everything was good, except the meat was a little cold. I had a pulled Pork platter for lunch. Breads were great and the server was fun. Love the atmosphere, a great place to go in the late summer or in the evening. Very homey feel.

As you can tell from my reviews I love BBQ. I just don't get the fuss about this place. The atmosphere is cool and the location in historic Roswell is also very cool. Food was decent but not as good as other BBQ restaurants in the area.

Took a group of six here for dinner a couple of weeks ago, all different meals and they all raved about the food. Not exactly true barbecue, only better. Wide range of traditional or eclectic sides, all well-prepared. Texas toast is the ultimate barbecue sandwich bread. Fun decor on the walls, comfortable vibe to the place. Parking is a challenge but adds to the authenticity. This is my vote for best barbecue in Atlanta.

Went here with a group of friends for some tasty BBQ. Ended up craving more of my boyfriend's entree than my own. The ribs are amazing and their chicken wings topped with their secret BBQ sauce is definitely worth trying. I tried the portabella mushroom sandwich with fried green tomatoes topped with smoked gouda. It was an interesting taste, to say the least. Let's just say, I should have ordered the pulled pork or ribs. Collard greens with garlic sprinkles rock and their mac and cheese makes you want seconds!

Tonight I finally got to the much lauded Swallow at the Hollow. It was good but it's not as good as some of Atlanta's other BBQ. Pluses The chicken wings were really good. They say they're smoked but they didn't really taste smoked to me, more like grilled and them sauced. Somme of the sauce caramelized which made a tasty crust. The biscuits were really good...different than I'd had before, I think they too are grilled. They're not really flakey, more like crispy and thin. Service was good, friendly and fast.. Minuses The baked beans were in a mustard BBQ sauce. What a disappointment. Maybe it's just 'different' and not bad, but it was a let down. The Rest I won't call these pluses or minuses, they're just observations. The ribs were smothered in BBQ sauce, so if they were smoked at some point, you'd never know it. The menu is pretty basic. Hope you want baby back ribs cuz that's all they got. No other style, no other type, just baby back. we tried the banana pudding and were really impressed when the waitron placed it before my eyes. It wasnt really sweet though and I noticed that another reviewer said the whipped cream was tasteless-- shazam-- I knew something was off about it. The chocolate chip cookies at the bottom were a nice idea but they're so overpowered by the hunk of congealed, bland pudding in the bowl that they don't really add anything. Ya read that it's chocolate chip banana pudding and think, 'PSYCHED. That's gonna rock' but it doesn't. If you ask me, the BBQ is better at Fox Brothers and probably even JR's. (though JR's doesn't compare to Fox Bros either) Dinner was fine tonight but after all the raves about the Swallow, I think a Swig would have been plenty.

Went there this afternoon after I got back from visiting a friend in North Carolina. I had a half-rack of baby back ribs, fried green tomatoes, fries, and some biscuits. The ribs were good. The sauce was a sweet, Kansas-City style sauce which I am not personally a fan of although it did taste good. I had never eaten fried green tomatoes before and I liked them, they came with ranch sauce. The biscuits were excellent, probably the best I have ever had after Aunt Jenny's Catfish Restaurant in Biloxi. I felt like I got plenty of food for my money, I ate all of the above and got some chocolate chip banana pudding for later (which I haven't tried yet). The location was pretty cool, you could drive right past this place and not know it was there unless you were looking for it. It looks like they have live music in there quite often although nothing was going on when I was in there. The service was good although the hostess that met me at the door was king of odd,LOL....I walked up to her and she said something to the effect of "what can I do for you"?, to which I replied...."well, since I am standing in a restaurant, you can help me get something to eat", so she gets the Master of the Obvious award for The Swallow. Overall, good place and I'll be back.

Swallow at the Hollow is two kinds of destinations depending on when you are there. Straight-up BBQ for lunch and most weeknight dinners. Very good bbq. 3 kinds of homemade sauce including a tangy South Carolina mustard-based sauce. Amazing mac-n-cheese. Everything is made in-house. Weekend nights you'll find Nashville singer-songwriters entertaining from 10PM-12AM. Expect a $15 cover - and make reservations.

This time of year, on a nice day, dinner outside at the Swallow is exquisite. As the sun falls below the Oaks the long shadows add a pleasant harmony to some of the most melodious food in the general vicinity. Bil Greenwood has a great place here. The menu is thoughtful and focuses on southern dishes with an unconventional twist. Tonight I had the smoked sausage with beans and fries. They make the sausage in-house and it is some of the best around. Loaded with fennel and hot peppers, the sausage is cooked to perfection and arrives at the table hot as hell. Beans were great and fries were perfect. Annie had the ribs - cooked perfectly. The sauces are also well put together. While the hot sauce has the look and consistency of hot dog water , it lights up the meat in singular fashion. Mac and cheese - creamy and delicious. Cole Slaw crunchy, fresh , a little on the sweet side and tasty.. Tonight we found ourselves sitting next to a group of elderly "old south" kind of folks. We enjoyed eavesdropping on their description of Hillary as "pure evil" in a southern drawl (you can try this at home. say "pee-your ae-veil"). And, as good Christians do, they wished "pure evil" onto Hillary and I bet she felt it immediately. They are, apparently, big fans of a particular contestant on Wheel of Fortune and regaled us of tales of her solving puzzles with only three letters showing. There were also informative tidbits about how bathing every day promotes the spread of viruses. I bet Hillary bathes every day. I sweated from the hot sauce and was overwhelmed by the sausage. I ate too much but I did not drink too much cause I couldn't get a fuggin beer when I needed it. Catching up now. I hate the table arrangements inside. The "old south " folks were fun from a distance but up close, we would have had to kill one of them as an example. We have been there occasionally for music, when it wasn't too country but unfortunately, it is usually pretty country- not our cup. A better beer list would be a big plus! But tonight on the porch, in love, eating awesome food and laughing at silly people - It really doesn't get any better. Disclaimer: I am a southerner too.

great bbq and great atmosphere! It is a great ol' BBQ place with big portions and cold beers! Great outdoor tables.... in a slow part of town. Only drawback... a little pricey for BBQ.

Best Barbeque I have ever had. For me, the secret is in the sauce and boy do these guys got it ! Everything is really made from scratch - and no that is not just a slogan here, it is a factual statement. I do not rate Barbeque on the sides presented with the meal. For me it is all about the Q itself - and this Q is out of this world. Food 5/5 Service 5/5 Atmosphere 5/5 Value 4/5

When you step out of the car, you can smell it. My pre-meal beer was served in a plastic cup. My kind of classy BBQ joint! I was anticipating the BBQ already. The ribs did not disappoint. There are some sauces on the table, but those are just table dressing. The ribs are already cooked with some sauce and taste great as-is: not too wet, not too dry, not too spicy, not too tangy. The sides are OK; only the coleslaw really stood out for me. The coleslaw is just the right amount of creamy salty peppery without being too runny with too much dressing.

This place is always crowded for a reason. Sure, not everything on the menu is 100%. Maybe I'm just lucky and all my favorites happen to be SATH specialties. Ribs: Freaking fantastic. Sweet, smokey, tender, amazing, add more superfluous words here because they all fit. My dinner companion and I tend to fork fight over the last remaining bits. Macaroni and Cheese: I can't even write about this side dish or I'll have a craving so intense I'll keep mumbling "melty deliciousness" until I can finally navigate to Roswell. I have never had Mac & Cheese that was this good. If you're even an "on the fence" lover, just order this. You can thank me by getting them to change the name to "Veronica's Favorite Food". btw... definitely not made with Velveeta. I've had Velveeta M&C and that stuff is disgusting. So, since someone else mentioned it negatively I feel like I have to defend my favorite with a better description. Your Macaroni and Cheese from Swallow at the Hollow experience will begin when you feast your eyes upon a mound of thick elbow noodles that are covered in baked cheese. Your fork will try and scoop the entire bowl up in one try but don't let it... this is something you'll want to savor. The exact cheese(s) used is not easily wrestled out of the waiters, but my immature taste buds think it's more than one type. Whatever it is, it's an appealing pale yellow. Thanks. Now my mouth is watering trying to imagine what they taste like. THEY'RE AMAZING. Happy little gems of cheesy noodle-y rainbows. So good that it's always both of my side dishes, that way I can bring some home and enjoy it later. Da Beans: Eh. I love BBQ Baked Beans and I did not really like these. Pulled Pork: Apparently it's delicious because the Boyfriend always orders this when we go. I'm too enamored with the M&C to waste any tummy space trying it. But he's an expert so I feel confident recommending it. Texas Toast: Buttery, toasty, mmmmm perfection. The Apple Pie: I'm obsessed with apple pie. So obsessed that you can pretty much count on there being apple pie at my house at any given moment. I really wanted to like their version. However, it was not warm and therefore I didn't love it. The service is fast, efficient, friendly, and not too "HI! HOW ARE YOU? WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU? WANT ME TO HELP YOU WITH YOUR NAPKIN?" so you can enjoy the food and enjoy the music. I definitely recommend this place if you're trying to find somewhere to take a date, your family from out of town (or in town....), anyone who likes barbecue. It's a winner and the top of my BBQ list.

One word: Delicious! This was our second time there and was just as good as the first. Pulled pork was moist and tasty, mac 'n cheese was creamy and made my stomach happy. The beans were much better than I was expecting, not sure why I thought they would be just okay though. Ordered the biscuits as an app and they were like none I've had before, a bit crunchy on the outside, warm and soft on the inside. Served with honey on the side. Would order them again although they filled me up a big as they were pretty good-sized. Three bbq sauce sont he table, swet and tangy, mustard, and vinegar based - nice variety and all very well-balanced and good. Bucket of 6 bottled beers for about $20 was great too: mix of Sierra Nevada and Swetwater. Quickly becoming our favorite BBQ joint for stopping at after frisbee golf over at East Roswell park. Glad I have leftovers as now I am craving more!!!

Since moving to Atlanta, S@tH has been (unfortunately for my hips) a constant staple in my diet. The BBQ is most definitely some of the finest in the south. The atmosphere is fun and relaxing and though it can get pretty crowded most nights - its worth the wait! My favorite dish is the Pit Cooked Portabello Mushroom Sandwich topped with Gouda cheese and fried greet tomatoes on fresh baked Texas toast! And I always look forward to the cooler seasons when they serve their seasonal roasted butternut squash! The obvious choice for desert is their chocolate chip banana pudding! Service is always friendly and welcoming and their late night shows are a lot of fun! My only suggestion to the Hollow is that they up their beer selection!

Great place. We sat outside on a beautiful Sunday. We had ribs, sausage, brisket, pork, smoked wings, and a smoked half chicken. Now for the sides, Cole slaw, potato salad , beans, stew, Mac n chz, greens. Everything was great. Homemade bread and biscuits. One of the best banana puddings I have eaten. It had chocolate chip cookies instead of vanilla wafers. Out server was super friendly and answered all of our questions.

YUM! I haven't had barbecue that good in a LONG time! Yes, it's hot as all get-out in there, so dress accordingly. I ordered the half rack, and the ribs were sticky and sweet and meaty. My boyfriend ordered the pulled pork and I don't think there was a shred left when he finished. He also got the beans, which were very good, and we both got the cucumber and tomato salad. I also got the friend green tomatoes. They were pretty okay, but I wish I had gotten the beans. We saved room for dessert, and each got a HUGE slice of pie. They are homemade, but I heard from the bakery around the corner. I had blackberry and the boy had coconut creme. I wish I had started from the crust, because it was to die for, and I didn't have enough room to finish it. If you're eco-conscience, bring your own to-go ware. They only use styrofoam. Boo. We WILL be back. (with our own to-go ware)

Oh boy. This place had a lot to live up to. Everyone that I've heard mention Swallow at the Hollow raves about the food and music. Maybe I was there on an "off" night. Or maybe I ordered the wrong things. But neither I nor my dining companion enjoyed our meal. In fact, the best thing about the experience was the service. Our server was hilarious as we kept a running joke involving tea refills, African and/or European swallows and limes vs. coconuts. It was craziness. But fun, none the less. The music was local and fairly decent. But seriously, I didn't love the food. To me, the meat was dry and the sauces were average. And the sides were average. Mac and cheese that seemed like it was made with Velveeta, and green beans that were cooked within an inch of their life, and probably mine too. I really wanted to rave and rave about this place. I really did. But I wasn't impressed.

Having grown up in Marietta and having driven through Roswell thousands of times in my life, I had always heard about this place but never knew where it was. A cute girl wanted to try it out so I decided it was time to find it. Turns out I never did see it growing up because it is on a back road that makes most back roads look like super highways. I drove by it the first time, had my GPS yell at me, then turned around and finally decided that I had found it. I did not know for sure until I had GOTTEN out of the car and saw the sign. The lady at the front asked us if we were here for the "performance." Now this place is hidden and surrounded by trees so I looked at her trying to decide what kind of performance it was. I probably looked a bit frightened and finally asked what performance she was referencing. Turns out they have a live music show that they charge $17.50 to see. $17.50! Trying to be nice we told her that we would think about it during dinner and let her know. It was a very southern barbeque layout which was cool. The server brought us to an eight person table where four people were already sitting. I stood there in disbelief and before I could say anything she was already gone. Sweet we had a host family for the evening complete with a mom, dad, and two kids! I had thought Christmas had come early! Seriously though, if this had been a first date the girl may not have wanted another. Luckily the kids were behaved but they all kept looking at us and I am sure they were just as mystified by the situation as we were. Okay on to the food. The girl ordered ribs with fries and potato salad. She seems to like ribs;) I ordered the sliced pork with fries. Sadly there was no corn. I have been to a few places similar to this lately with no corn and it makes me sad. The pork was really good and thick. No lunch meat cuts here. Fries were good too. Honestly though the best part of my meal was the biscuit. My grandmother used to make them like this and it was a true southern masterpiece. I also ate the girl's Texas toast. Shockingly we had decided not to stay for the live music. Overall it was a great place, with great food, but with questionable seating policies. If you are up in Roswell, try this place out!

I love the food and atmosphere here. The thing I could live without is the attitude that seems to plague them sometimes, especially when they are busy/packed. The tables are also placed so close to one another that it's hard to pull your chair out to sit down without hitting the person at the table sitting next to you. The staff has been unhelpful and a bit standoffish when we needed assistance. I've dined here a number of times and I haven't always gotten the snooty attitude, but I've seen it more than once and it seems to rear its ugly head when they are busy, so we try to go for early dinners and sit outside, when the weather is nice. The ribs are awesome and my husband craves them often, so we will keep going. The homemade bread is also a nice touch. The banana pudding is to die for (so I've heard, I am not a fan of bananas, so I skip it) and the mac & cheese is delicious. Overall, a great restaurant, good food - I just wish a few things were different. Oh, and parking there can be nightmare, as well. Get there early and beat the crowds, that's my best advice.

Just returned from dinner at the Hollow. Aptly named, I've had better Cue in a lot more places. But first let's go thru the experience. Got there around 6 and there was already a line to sit inside and hear the music. So we sat outside and never did hear the music. (Would a speaker be so difficult to install? Like a good southerner we got some tea, and then promptly came the dinner orders. My wife got the dinner salad with Portobello's, which was a very small portion and way overpriced at $12.45. It turned out to be an average salad with oversalted mushrooms on top. I ordered the Pork plate with two sides - Brunswick Stew & Fried Green tomatoes. The stew was fair, missing a bunch of vegetables while the FGT's were excellent, litely breaded firm served with a decent ranch dipping sauce. The shredded pork was very tender yet void of any hickory / wood flavor. Litely pink, it was just fair and yet kind of expensive compared to other BBQ joints at $12.95. Oh btw, the 3 sauces suck. I've had better versions many times over and these were just not good. Overall, it was underwelming and now I know why I haven't been back in many years. Skip the entrees and order dessert to go and that will make a visit worth it !

Some of the best BBQ in the Roswell area. Very close to old town Roswell. And my wife would swear by their Banana Bread Pudding. The atmosphere is very rustic, and comfortable but a can get a little loud.

I've only made it into this joint once but I'm debating if I'll ever go back. I was sent down to pick up a huge take out order for my co-workers. The restaurant was far from finished having it ready after they gave me a thirty minute waiting time. That wasn't really the biggest problem. When I got back to the office, about three miles away we quickly realized that we had piles of plain meat. No sauces of any kind. For a BBQ joint this is unforgivable. I called up and asked for a manger, he said he would send someone up with some sauces and some deserts for our hastle. The driver arrived with the sauces, no deserts. Fine no biggie. But once we actually where able to eat no one was impressed with the food at all. No one bothered to keep their leftovers, it was really a lot of food wasted. If I go back I'll do a dine-in experience, I do understand that it's difficult to do a large take-out order sometimes.

This is a speed review because I done lost track of time. It's good. Used to be better, on a more consistent basis. Wish it wasn't so hit and miss, because when this place is "on," the food is really good. When it's not, then I walk out wondering why we didn't go to BBQ1. If it's volume you crave, then by all means go. Portions are huge. Kids love the slabs of Texas Toast. But just about any mix of butter and bread gets 5-stars from them. Bring back the limeade!

I like the BBQ here. They serve everything pretty plain, but smoked properly so you can pretty much add sauce or spices to flavor the meat how you like it. You can't really go wrong w/ the chopped pulled pork. My wife is really into the fried green tomatoes.

I'm always in search of a great BBQ restaurant OTP, so I was excited to try Swallow at the Hollow. It's a BBQ joint, so let's not fuss over the service or the decor. It's all about the food. I ordered a chopped pork sandwich platter with sides of cole slaw and mac n' cheese. T got the daily special, a half smoked chicken with sides of collard greens and mac n' cheese. My sandwich arrived on what was billed as Texas Toast, but was really just buttered and toasted white bread (note: real Texas Toast is THICK). The pork was excellent, smoky and tender. The cole slaw was okay, perhaps not as creamy as I'd have liked. I'd also have liked my sandwich on a bun. The pork was moist enough that is was sogging right through the bread. T's chicken was seasoned perfectly, nice and smoky, and cooked tender throughout. She wasn't thrilled with the collard greens, which she called "gritty". Mac n' cheese was a great side dish for both of us. Now for the item that caused them to lose a star. The sauces on the table need help. The mustard-based sauce was almost too mustardy, overpowering the meat. The KC red sauce was too sweet. And the "spicy vinegar" sauce had such a narrow tip on the squeeze bottle that it kept getting clogged with spices. Plenty of vinegar came out, however. How about a nice Texas sauce with some black pepper notes? Just a suggestion. Go buy some Famous Dave's Devil Spit or Stub's Spicy and take it to the restaurant with you. Finally a note on desserts... Huge, flavorful, great crusts. No complaints.

This place has atmosphere coming out its ears. I felt like I was in some low slung house in a bayou somewhere in Louisiana. Really puts you in the mood for bbq. Sometimes they even have a farmers market out front and live music as well. The food was good, but a bit drier than I prefer my bbq. I should note that i generally go for the thick sauces and theirs is more of a liquid, which is still delicious. Different strokes for different folks I guess. Also the fried green potatoes are fantastic. Only challenge is exercising enough self control to wait for them to cool before attacking them. Guess who left with a burnt tongue?

ribs were SLAMMING, mac & cheese was among best i've had, and the potato salad was done perfectly (great red onion taste mmmm). great service and the food comes out quickly and is nice & hot. staff is friendly, the dj spins classic vinal (sunday nights), and it is a cozy atmosphere. i would HIGHLY recommend this place. i do have a couple gripes though: the baked beans are horrendous and i wouldn't feed them to my worst enemy. also, the apple pie was "mehh" mostly because the apples were hard as rocks and cold. banana chocolate chip pudding is also improperly named. it is a massive mound of generic whipped cream. worst desserts ever.

I went there for lunch on a rainy mid week afternoon with my father at the suggestion of his neighbors. SATH smokes over wood, you can see the smoke from the chimney when you approach the restaurant. I got a pork sandwich with coleslaw. The bread was kind of squashy but this makes it easier to sop up the sauce. I liked all 3 sauces provided on the table, and found that all 3 mixed together tasted the best to me. A little tomatoey, vinegary, mustardy goodness. Serviceable. Large portion. Would eat here again but it's not the most amazing 'que I've eaten. Still, not bad for Georgia.

A lot has been written about this joint, and I've been a fan for years. So it is probably hard to say anything that hasn't been said already. The place has a lot of character, and that goes a long way. The first bite of the chopped pork is always amazing. They include the right amount of outside meat, and it sports an impressive smoke ring. It has hickory flavor but not too much. The meat itself can be a tad on the dry side. The outside brown is a little too chewy to me, almost to the point of being hard to eat. Some of it can be crunchy which may be the result of a cooker that is too hot. But it is still pretty good stuff. I'm not a huge fan of their ribs. I've had them maybe half a dozen times over the years and they have been inconsistent. On our trip today they were very fatty, yet tender. Also have a bit too much sauce for me. So let's quickly go through everything else... Pros: - All side items are made from scratch, right down to the pickles. The quality shows. - Service has been top notch for me on many visits. - The portion sizes are huge. I can't finish a plate of anything here. - They offer sliced pork, which is rare these days. The chopped is a course chop. - It is also a concert venue with some interesting talent. Cons: - I don't care for their sauces. The vinegar is probably the best but I don't think the pork needs any sauce at all. - Despite the unusual location, this place is not a hidden gem at all. Very crowded at times. - Parking can be chaotic and completely disorganized. - I kinda like the stew, but purists may turn up their noses. I think they make it with corn meal. All in all, I believe their Q is above average. I'm just nit picking for the most part. This is a cool joint that pays a lot of attention to their craft. I don't think I'm going out on a limb by saying they have the best Q in north Fulton. Certainly worth going out of your way for... and this is the ultimate test of barbecue to me.

Whenever I have visitors in town, this is the one place I always take them. The wings are basted in this amazing sauce and not fried! The baby back ribs are always juicy, tender, and falling off the bone with the perfect amount of sauce. The mac n' cheese is the perfect balance of runny and firm with delicious bits of baked cheese on top. The portions are huge, the prices are reasonable, the staff is friendly, the atmosphere is great (you're in a cabin with live music on weekends!), the are around it is so homey. After we've stuffed ourselves, somehow we still find room to share a banana chocolate chip pudding.

I wasn't sure it would be worth it to drive from Midtown to Roswell for barbeque. We went on Sunday afternoon. It was pretty busy, but we were seated immediately. The live music, shelves of records, and wood cabin feel give this place a lot of character and a cozy vibe. There wasn't any chicken on the menu (except wings) so I went with the pork platter, side of fried green tomatoes. Our food took a little longer than expected...like I said, it was busy...but wow. SO MUCH FOOD for $11.00. And I ate all of it! The waitress gave us a big, sweet bowl of banana pudding topped with whipped cream to make up for the wait. Delicious and I'm not even a fan of banana pudding. All in all, Swallow at the Hollow was worth the 25+ minute trip. FYI there is additional parking down the street.

I've finally got to try this place after hearing so much about it. It definitely met above and beyond my expectations for BBQ. BBQ ribs were awesome. The meat was juicy and tender on the inside, by flavorful and smoky on the outside with just the right amount of sauce. Chopped beef was really good, too. It wasn't dry at all. For sides, Brunswick stew was a little on the salty side for me. Cole slaw was refreshing. Texas toasts were done JUST right. We finished with their chocolate banana pudding. It was a nice ending to our meal. The portion was big, so be sure to share.

We love this place. The food is good the prices are resonable and on the weekends they have song writers from Nashville come down and perform songs they wrote for the country music stars.

Mmmm.... I usually get the chopped pork plate here. The brunswick stew and mac and cheese are great sides. It's a lot of food and it's definitely not healthy but every now and then this is the place to go for tasty chopped pork and turkey. The veggie sandwich here is fantastic. You could bring a veggie here if they are okay with watching you down some of the best bbq meat in town. I don't think they have chicken here. You won't have room for dessert for sure!

Being from the Bay Area in California, we have a lot of BBQ joints that serve messy saucy style BBQ. Surprisingly, my trip here was an excellent way to expose me to how BBQ should be. Ordered the chopped pork, mac and cheese, beans, biscuits, and started with some fried green tomatoes. The food did not disappoint. The only complaint I have is room. Depending on where you sit, you'll have to shuffle your chair or table a few inches to let your neighbors sit down or get up.

Tucked away on some random side street in Roswell, you'll find Swallow at the Hollow in an unassuming wood cabin/barn like building. Step inside however and you'll think you were transported to Nashville if you happen to go on either Friday or Saturday night. On Friday and Saturday they have live shows (2 hours) of singer/song writers from Nashville performing their songs and telling the stories that were behind the songs. Swallow at the Hollow serves pretty good food. I recently had the chopped (though it was really more like pulled) pork plate with beans and mac and cheese. The food was fairly good bbq and is served in HUGE portions. If you can finish an entire plate of pork and sides you have my respect. They have three different types of sauce that you can put on your meat; sweet, hot, and mustard. I tried them all and while none of them wow'ed me, they were all pretty decent. The real reason you need to check this place out is the entertainment. I'm not a huge country fan but I listen to it a little. I was there last week and happened to catch 3 entertaining women; Stephanie Chapman, Lauren Lucas, and Kristy Jackson. While you may not have heard of these women there's a pretty decent change you're heard their music. Each had their own style of performing and writing, but all three women put on a great show. I will definitely come back to Swallow at the Hollow, not only for the food but for the entertainment as well. If you like bbq and country, this is definitely your place. If you like one but not the other, you'll likely have a pretty good time too.

My night at SatH is one of the biggest and best surprises in recent memory. I'm in Atlanta for just a few days of work. Co workers brought me here and I'm so grateful because I never would have known about it, Yelp notwithstanding. I just never would have thought to try it. The food was killer (looks like Yelpers have adequately covered that so I won't bore you), the service was great (our waitress was so friendly and helpfull it was crazy - she went to the sister restaurant across the street for my dessert), and I ended up staying for the whole show after dinner. I had intended to head for a blues club, but 2 songs from the singer/songwiters with #1 country hits to their credits convinced me to stay. Filled my belly and my soul. I'm a happy camper.

4 Stars is a good rating. This places was truly great though. Service was wonderful, we sat right down without a wait. I think we hit it right @ the perfect time b/c right after we sat there were a few large parties that came in. We went on Sunday around 5pm and there was a man and a woman setting up to sing and play guitar. They were good and got the kids invoved too. Fried Green Tomatoes were excelellent. I had the ribs, Mac & Cheese and Brunswick stew and everthing was very tasty and huge portions. Also very good selection of beer. I'm looking forward to getting home tonight to finish off my leftovers. I plan on sampling other BBQ establishments in the Roswell area but The Swallow has set the bar high and I'm looking forward to coming back. Can't beat a Sunday afternoon of BBQ and live entertainment.

I'd been looking to hit it up for a while now on my BBQ quest, but considering it's pretty far out I hadn't made it yet. We hit this place up for lunch and sat outside. It was really nice sitting on the porch. We got sweet teas, a half rack plate with mac & cheese and Brunswick stew, and a chopped pork plate with mac & cheese and baked beans. We also chose biscuits with our plates. The food took a while to come out, which was a bit surprising since it was not busy at all. They give you a lot of food here which is commendable. Anyway, the food. The sweet tea was very good. Some of the best I've had out in a while. The mac & cheese was pretty good - I liked the texture a lot, but could have had more of a crust and a stronger cheese flavor. I wasn't much of a fan of the Brunswick stew - the flavor wasn't ideal and the grainy texture was really off-putting. I tried the baked beans and didn't enjoy the flavor of them at all. I was a huge fan of the biscuits - they were excellent. Now the important stuff: meat. I had a mixed reaction to the ribs. I thought the ribs were cooked nicely and the texture was great. But I also thought they were a little too fatty and I didn't really enjoy the flavor of them. They had a bit of an unusual taste. I think a lot of that comes from the sauce which was slightly too sweet and had a flavor I'm just not a huge fan of. The ribs were pretty heavily sauced too. I think the ribs would be fantastic if they were a little leaner and had less of a different sauce though. I also tried the chopped pork, which was the biggest letdown of anything we had. It was very fatty. It also had an overly smoky flavor - smoky to the point of definitely needing some sauce to rescue it. Unfortunately, all of their sauces were just terrible. Yeah, terrible. The SC sauce is mustard-based (nuff said), KC sauce was bad, and the NC vinegar sauce was nothing like anything I've ever had in NC (it was the least offensive of the 3 though). Neither of us was a fan of the pork at all. We also tried the "Chocolate Chip Banana Pudding." To clarify, this isn't banana pudding with chocolate chips in it - it's banana pudding with chocolate chip cookies mixed in and topped off with unsweetened whipped cream. It was a pretty huge dessert to contend with after eating a bunch of BBQ. The homemade cookies were good and it was interesting to try, but I wasn't really a fan of the combination of the cookies in the banana pudding. I did like how the whipped cream wasn't sweetened as the dish was already very sweet from all the cookies in it. Anyway, maybe worth checking out once, but it wasn't a winner in my book. A more traditional banana pudding might be though. This place is obviously pretty hyped, but I can't say I felt it really lived up to the hype though. I mean, I can only think about the fact that I walked out of a BBQ place and the only 2 things I really liked were the biscuits and the sweet tea! That is disappointing to me. Maybe they are just really inconsistent so I'm willing to give them another shot, but I'll probably stick to places that are closer and consistently good. 3

I went here for dinner last night and they have: the best pulled pork I have ever had, great sweet bbq sauce, delicious macaroni and cheese, fresh baked biscuits with honey, sweetwater 420 on draft, and live country music. The atmosphere was great (we could see into the kitchen where they have huge containers of sweet tea just marinating to get all sugary and delicious), the waitstaff was friendly, and we had tons of leftovers. Two minor disappointments: they were out of fried green tomatoes, and they initially brought us the wrong bill - but were very apologetic once they noticed.

I've got to be honest with myself and with you. I assumed that my experience at Swallow in the Hollow would be better considering everyone at work would gush about how fabulous it was. The experience wasn't. Well actually that is untrue- it wasn't the experience that sucked, it was the food. The food was really, really crappy. The service was good- servers were friendly, helpful, and quick. I ordered the turkey sandwich plate with fried green tomatoes and fries as my side. 1st things 1st: why would you serve meat at a BBQ restaurant on texas toast. The meat should be on white bread where you can get the full flavor of the meat and sauce. Since they failed to do that (and I failed to ask being that it was my 1st visit) I didn't enjoy my sandwich very much- the buttered toast overpowered the smoked turkey. The turkey was tasty however- not too dry. I tried all 3 sauces and felt like Goldilocks only I never found the perfect sauce even when mixing. The sweet sauce was absurdly, syrupy sweet. The mustard sauce was overly mustardy with not enough vinegary bite. The vinegar sauce was just plain awful. I have never been to a BBQ restaurant where I disliked the sauce so much- this was made all the worse since they had multiple different types to try. The fried green tomatoes were fried perfectly but they were so overly battered that one could barely taste the refreshing lemoniness of the FGTs. The fries were the best thing they had going - perfectly fried. I have to throw in that while I am giving them a harsh score and blasting Swallow in the Hollow it is not really their fault. I think that all items I was served were meant to be served as such - there wasn't really an issue with the food being horribly prepared or whatever. I just think that the food and barbecue sauces are not worth the gushing of the misaligned patrons as well as the high price.

The bread here is so wrong for 'cue but is very good in its own right. Order some and eat it plain with butter. The pork is what is worth ordering at the Swallow. Brisket is decent, and is probably good if you like brisket, which I don't, so don't mind me in that regard.

Barbecue - both food & 'feel' - doesn't get any better than this. A staple and worth the drive from most places in the Atlanta metro. Big portions! Always good. Try to catch the live music!

  • Jim H.

Higher priced bbq in a different style than something like Harold's near the Atlanta penitentiary. This is not your typical bbq- more contemporary or something. You can't complain about the taste. Most everything has excellent flavor and is priced accordingly. Also, the portions are typically very large just like their sister restaraunt across the street- Greenwoods.

  • Thomas S.

Most over-rated BBQ in the area. The ribs are okay, but the selection of sides is pretty bad. Do yourself a favor and go across the street to their sister restaurant, or if you want ribs: Spiced Right is where it's at.

Met a friend here after work and before a charity art auction. Not crowded at all. Great waitstaff and the chopped pork sandwich was perfection. Not sure how I feel about the bartender putting her finger on the opening to one of the sauce bottles when she was explaining that I needed to cover the hole before shaking or it would be disasterous. I liked her but I don't know her well enough to have her put her fingers on something that may be ingested by me. Hmmmmmmm..... Worth the drive over and if you're in the area and haven't been, well, that's just your loss.

Wow a lil hard to find the place.. you drive through a residential area first.. but wow worth the drive.. I don't even like potato salad and there's looked worthy of a try.. and mmmm I've been hooked ever since!! reasonable prices ... nice " southern down home" kinda feel to the place ( i hate those over commercialized BBQ places!) Big portions :) Yum!! looking forward to my next visit already!

Awesome Barbeque! I went on a night with some co-workers and we had a great time. There happened to be live music the night we were there (an unexpected bonus) which also added to the fun atmosphere. I give it two thumbs up!

The absolute best casual dining experience on the Northside. Cheap, fast, fresh, and abundant. Plus, they have live music at night that just makes it that much more fun. Great place, highly recommended.

Food is good. Dessert is great. Live music is the best. If you like BBQ you really can't go wrong with this place. If you like country music then you're in for a real treat if you go on night where they're having a show.

Can't ask for better BBQ in the area. I just wish the wait for a table was shorter on the weekends. A gal needs her ribs. The sides are great. The staff is fun, and will do their best to keep you happy.

We had a wonderful meal here and the service is great. This is about an hour from my home, but worth the trip! I can't wait to go back. It is your typical BBQ menu and a great southern atmosphere. This is a great place to bring out of state company.

yum. this place was delicious. it's the best i've tried so far. First of all when you walk in you feel like you're going into some cool roadhouse in the woods. I had the beef sandwich. the meat was delicious tasting and what made it was the toasty, homemade texas toast. there's nothing like fresh homemade bread. the sauce was good, i prefer it just a tad thicker and sweeter, but overall it had good flavor. the potato salad was excellent. big chunks of tender potato with just enough mayo. the salads are awesome. big salads with lots of veggies, homemade dressing and little chunks of eggs and smoked gouda. the ribs were really tasty, nicely basted, not too fatty but just enough fat to keep them tender. and the homemade pickles, i'm still craving them today! i will definately keep coming back to try all of the yummy things on the menu. it's a little pricier than other bbq joints, but you pay for quality.

If you are in the mood for Barbecue, this place is worth the trip. The baby back ribs are fall off the bone delicious, the mac'n cheese is the best in town and the portions are huge. It is no frills and no reservations and there is usually a wait...but very worth it. They have free music on Sunday evening, name bands on Fr and Sat night - but the real draw is the barbecue....yummy!

Yum, Fat Matt's still rules Atlanta but this Barbeque and atmosphere is worth the trip. I don't usually leave my small world in downtown but up in Roswell there is a roadhouse tucked away off the tiniest side street you've ever seen. Park the car and you can hear the tunes of original or cover music resonating through the wooden slats. The atmoshpere is very warm and fun. Depending on when and which day this can be a good place to hangout with family or friends. Give into your guilty pleasure admit that you're a southerner and kick back and listen to some good country music with some good country cookin'

love the food here - tons of food for any belly size. if you have a small appetitie - definitely share with someone. i took half of my meal home. the mac & cheese was good. i liked the chicken wing appetizer. my turkey sandwich was great. i LOVE that you can order from across the street at Greenwood's - do it for dessert!!! chocolate chip banana pudding was ok. on thursdays, check out the farmer's market alongside this place! yum! 5pm-8pm.

This place had a lot of personality. The staff was exceptionally friendly. There was live music. The server recommended the portabella sandwich and I did not like it but the rest of my family enjoyed great BBQ food. I purchased a gift certificate on restaurant.com and got this meal dirt cheap. Best BBQ i've had since moving to the southland. Swallow crushes Fat Matts and Williamson Brothers in flavor and consistency (though I DO love the williamson Bro's sauce, i use it on my home BBQ endeavors 100% of the time). Never had a bad meal here.

We went with another couple here tonight at 5:15. They had never been here, and I was anxious to see how things were faring here, after my disappointment with Spiced Right around the corner. Three ordered chopped pork, I ordered sliced, following my simple belief that chopping up a ribeye makes no sense, so why chop pork? Anyway, various sides, including potato salad, mac 'n cheese, fried green tomatoes, fries, and cole slaw were ordered and shared. No Brunswick stew this visit. The FGTs were sizable, with a crumb coating, not too greasy, and satisfactorally firm/ slightly tart. Potato salad was nice mixture of creamy and chunks, with a black pepper undernote that I enjoyed. Slaw very high average, and appropriate to the meal. My serving of sliced pork was enormous, moist, and flavorful, with no forced smoke tastes. The sauces: I happen to like the house mild sauce, ramped up with three shots of Tabasco per tablespoon. Never have cared for mustardy sauce. The "hot" sauce was too vinegary for me and not as hot as my personal concoction. Our waiter was great, very attentive. Our friends raved about their meals. Nice night out. Nothing snappy or sassy to write about this satisfying experience. BIG takehome portions.

We went here for a Saturday lunch. It was not all I expected and does seem to be overrated. I think Old South BBQ in Smyrna kicks this places' butt-- not even in the same league. I got the chopped pork plate with french fries and brunswick stew. The BF got the same plate with mac and cheese and brunswick stew. We also order fried green toms. The positives-- the waiter was nice and friendly, but did get a little weeded and didn't come back to refill our drinks. The atmosphere is also really quaint. The BBQ sauces were really good, but the sticky bottles they were in left me aching for a warm rag to clean up with. The pork itself was decent, but I was expecting fireworks. I have made better pulled pork BBQ sandwiches myself in the crock pot--- there was just too much "weird stuff" in there-- i.e. fat, bone chips, and other unidentified pig parts. I am so anti anything but straight meat, so it kind of skeeved me out. Maybe I should have gotten the sliced pork, but I do prefer the chopped texture of the meat. The mac and cheese seems like its made with Velveeta--- good, but not great. The fried green toms had the tiniest bit of cornmeal on them, but not much breading-- which I usually like not too heavy, but this was really not enough for my tastes. It was more like a green tomato dipped for a flash in cornmeal on each side. It was 98% tomato and 2% cornmeal crumbs. The texas toast was not even that well toasted and only has garlic and butter on one side. Blah. The brunswick stew-- not for me. It apparently has duck in it as well and I'm not a duck fan at all. It was really my least favorite brunswick stew ever. All in all, this place is OK if you are in a pinch or if you get coupon off restaurant.com , but def not worth the full price.

I'd give 3.5 if i could. When I looked at the menu, I thought that the prices were normal to high, but the portions were big. Food was pretty good. Pretty tough to find, but thats good sometimes. Fun place, would love to be there for a live gig.

I can't find one thing wrong with "The Swallow". Most Yelps state that the chopped pork is the thing but my party of 6 voted my ribs the best dish on the table and I'd have to agree. Do not miss the macaroni and cheese or the chocolate-chip banana pudding. Seriously. All that is great but the music is really what you come for. I'm a native of Nashville and having been to the Bluebird Cafe several times it does not surprise me that the Swallow at the Hollow is affiliated. The Bluebird has a certain reverence around it in Nashville. It's known as THE place where songwriters make themselves known and sometimes very famous. It's so important to the Nashville music industry that the owner has entrusted the business to the Nashville Songwriters Association International. All of this to say you're not seeing some wishful wanna-be songwriters on the stage at The Swallow. Last night we saw husband and wife team Mark Selby and Tia Sellers perform the hits they wrote, songs like "I Hope You Dance" from LeAnn Womack, "There's Your Trouble" from the Dixie Chicks, Kenny Wayne Shepherd's "Blue on Black", "That'll Be Alright" by Alan Jackson, among others. I mean this is a seriously talented duo. And even if the performance you are seeing includes fewer hits than this one, there's something really cool about hearing a songwriter sing their songs. The pitch may not be perfect, but they can make up for it in passion and the history to provide a one-of-a-kind experience. Check The Swallow's website to see who's on stage. Know Before You Go: Call for a reservation, and when you do, they will take your CC#. There are no cancellations so if you don't show up, they will charge your card for the cover on the show (not for dinner, of course). When you do show up, they'll take the number of reservations and add the cover charge to the bill so you can split it up any way you want to. There are two unofficial seatings at the Swallow. One's for dinner and one's for dinner and the show. If you go for dinner and the show, then they'll tell you to be there at 8:30. But that's just an estimate. They know which table you'll be sitting at so they have to wait for the "just dinner" people to get up before you can sit down. But you can grab a beer from the bar and sit outside on the porch or under one of the big trees in the parking lot and just hang out. They'll get you in with plenty of time to eat before the show. When people get all pissy that they aren't seated when their reservation states, they should consider that this is the way this place works. Makes sense and if you'd just chill out and drink your beer, you'd realize that waiting for your table at the Swallow is a really nice atmosphere to relish. You should also know that this is a listening room. So once the music starts, you shouldn't talk through it. Just listen and save what you had to say until the applause hit.

Great tasting BBQ, fun atmosphere and great side dishes...only real but MAJOR DRAWBACK---the SAUCE is terrible!...probably the worst BBQ sauce I have ever eaten...it's a real shame because the bad sauce keeps me from coming back!. I have a friend who has literally snuck in his own BBQ sauce. C'mon guys! It's not that hard to make a tasty sauce!

All of the hype drew me from Cartersville. About thirty miles each way. I went there with a party of eight for my birthday. We sat outside after a twenty minute wait. The fresh baked bread and biscuits are better than the BBQ. The ribs just did not deliver on the hype. The home made pickles were good. Maybe I'll give them another try.

AWESOME BBQ ribs. Worth the 30 min. drive every time. Meat rolling off the bones and just the right amount of home-made BBQ sauce. Best ribs I've had in ATL so far. Can't beat the decor and ambiance. Old country barn with country music decor. Live country singers really add flavor to the whole experience. Difficulty of finding the place adds mystery and fun to the trip. Everyone must go at least once.

Dined there for dinner on Dec 4, 2010. What a disappointment. This WAS my favorite place for BBQ. Not sure what has happened there, but the food is terrible. I had sliced pork. It was tough, tasteless, and fatty. I had mac-n-cheese and stew as my sides. The mac-n-cheese was very bland. It tasted like it was heated up out of a can. They have changed their stew recipe since the last time I was there (7-2009). The stew was ground up and very thin. It really reminded me of puke. It was terrible. The biscuit that I got was no better than the frozen ones at the supermarket. My pork plate was also $12.95! Way too much $$$ for the quality of food. My brother-in-law got the ribs which were very good. He let me have one. The other side that was good was the beans. I wish I would have gotten those. I do remember hearing something about the head chef leaving and opening his own place in Alpharetta?? If so, he took all of the good stuff with him. It was a shame because my brother-in-law is French and he wanted to experience American BBQ. We took him to SATH for just that. VERY DISAPPOINTED. I can't imagine why I would go back.

They put cornbread in the Brunswick Stew. Not on the side but in the bowl and already mixed with the stew before you get it. Yuck! 'Nuff said!

This is just about the best place to eat. Fun, good food and attention to detail. Live music on weekends. What else you lookin' for? Seriously, the side items are almost (almost) as good as the 'cue. Macaroni and cheese is a must have. Everything is fresh and you can't go wrong with any of the meats. Meat comes unsauced (except the ribs) so the quality of the cooking is right there before you put on your choice of sauces. Great place. A must in the north suburbs of Atlanta.

Omg!! That is all you need to know!! They own Greenwoods across the street which is also excellent. We got the ribs and the chipped pork. The ribs were tender with the perfect amount of sauce. Pork was smoky and tender. Like usual the Mac and cheese is fantastic and def a reason to go at least once. The baked beans were a surprise and smooth and rich. The fried green tomatoes were perfect fried little cakes. Everything was to die for. We got the butterscotch pie and it really is to rich. The waitress warned us and we did not listen. The service was. excellent and the staff is so friendly.

This place has an average of 4 stars right now and I don't understand that. This place is 5 all the way. I never write reviews but this place so deserves a 5 that I just had to. I went here on a suggestion from a coworker and I was pretty skeptical but I shouldn't have been. This is by far the best barbecue place I've ever eaten at. I had the ribs and they were melt in your mouth fantastic. The coleslaw was equally incredible but that mac and cheese. I've never had mac & cheese that good and I love mac & cheese. I have it everywhere. Now I can't have it anymore because this place has ruined me for mac & cheese. It is that good. In fact the food was so good that even if the service was terrible I would have rated this place a 5. The food was so good if the waitress had punched me in the face I would have rated this place a 5 but as it turns out the service was great. I got my table right away, my food came like a flash and the waitress was really nice. I'm coming back to this place every time I'm in Alpharetta from now on.

got there before 6, by the time our food arrived it was packed, day before thanksgiving. DELICIOUS fried green tomatoes!! WOW. the ribs were, ok. nothing special. the biscuits are yum yum. the mac an cheese was WHOA, dangerously good. you on a diet? best plan on indulging if you stop here. bottom line, fried green tomatoes, better than my main course! great atmosphere, no room for dessert, the portions are HUGE. I have been coming to this place for years and years, and I haven't found RIBS done better anywhere else. They also have exceptional collard greens and mac and cheese. The banana pudding is plentiful and out of this world. The music can get a little loud, and they're going to want to put you at a table that very nearly touches the stage. Sitting that close is only good if you don't want to talk with your dinner mates. On music nights, I sit on the porch.

Had absolutely horrible experience. We arrived at 6:10 and sat outside. Took awhile to have waiter take drink order but we tried to remain positive. We ordered foo at 6:30 and at 7:10 no food. We complained and the owner yelled at us to have patience. Unbelievable. I have to children that still have not had dinner. Have never been treated so rudely.

We have eaten here twice now and have not been disappointed. The rack of ribs are AMAZING!!! Moist but not soggy, soft but not mushy. Just right. The sauce is also off the hook. The Brunswick stew is soooo delicious!! the corn there just completes it!! The biscuits... ahhh what can I say.. it so flaky, yet substantial, melts in my mouth. Mac and cheese and fried green tomatoes were not that great. We have only picked up the food so I cannot say anything about the service in the restaurant. However, the waiter and waitress that have attended to me when I pick up my order have been polite, helpful and efficient. I am so going to be going back. I guess I need to go join a gym now. Thank you Swallow At the Hallow. I will be back...

Great BBQ meats and better than average sides too. Service is always good and quick. Been going here for years and its worth bypassing every other BBQ joint between Sandy Springs and it location. Mac and cheese is the best I've ever had anywhere. Also you know its a true BBQ joint when there is no sign on the building to find it.

Totally satisfied after my meal here. Homemade lemonade was great and extra sweet. They offer Texas toast and biscuits with their dishes. The biscuits are the bomb, kinda like popeyes biscuits minus the obscene amount of butter. We shared a pulled(chopped) pork platter with Brunswick stew and mac n cheese. The pork was moist with smoke rings through out. The Brunswich Stew was flavorful and unique. I think they thicken the stew with cornbread. We didn't even try the Chocolate Chip Banana pudding which is what everyone raves about. The location is off the beaten path but the BBQ and fixins are worth it.

This was always one of my "go to" bbq places. Food always great and atmosphere what you'd expect. Service has always been terrific. Was disappointed on my last recent visit. Ordered a smoked turkey plate with two sides. Turkey came out really dry and the Brunswick stew so salty it was almost inedible. Another person in our party had the ribs and felt they were "so-so". They're Mac and cheese was also substandard. Will try it again hoping that it was just an off night.

Really amazing food for a great price, and very accommodating for larger parties! (We had 7 plus a toddler and were seated within ten minutes) The side were outstanding! I ordered the chopped beef with fried green tomatoes and mac n cheese. The tomatoes were sliced a *tiny bit* to thick for my taste, but that's a personal preference. The mac n cheese was to die for. It had a spicy kick to it, so if you don't like that, don't order it. It was super creamy and rich a perfect compliment to the chopped beef. I just wish I didn't live so far away!

we decided to try this place because of the reviews. But when we got there and ate the food we were a little disappointed. The meat was very tender but lacked...soul....lacked flavor and smoke taste. The only real taste came from the sauce which was good. The green tomatoes were too thick and the crust was too fancy. it was like they tossed them in bread crumbs and fried them on a grill, not battered and deep fried. The toast and biscuit were good though.

Love the ribs but can't stand the over vinegary collard greens. The first time we ate here I tried the give them the benefit of the doubt regarding their collard greens and tasteless banana pudding and whipped cream, the ribs were great. Well that was short lived, last night I ordered the full slab of ribs with the potato salad, three bean baked beans, collard greens and butternut squash for our sides, hoping they would get the picture and serve better collards than before. Well I was completely wrong, the collard greens had an overbearing vinegary taste, I'm sorry but I make collards all the time and vinegar is not on my ingredients list but chicken stock is. I also had the Entree Salad with Turkey, although it was good it could have been alot better, for starters the Turkey was not seasoned at all, the cucumbers seem to have been sitting out for a few days and the tomatoes were not as firm as they would be in a fresh salad. Although this may seem like a deal breaker for some, I now know which sides to get and which ones not to get. I will definitely be back for more!!!!

My wife and I went to the Swallow at the. Hollow last night because our first choice was closed. We had to wait 30+ minutes to be seated! but that was expected from everything I've heard about this place. We put in our name and I went to the bar to get drinks. It was an absolute mad house. It took a good 10 minutes to get anyone's attention. We sat outside with our drinks waiting for our name to be called. I was hoping for the live music I'd heard they have, but they no longer have live music (bummer). When our table was ready we sat outside on the porch, what a great setting. The server told us they have amazing smoked chicken wings so we ordered some and some biscuits. As we were waiting someone came out and told the servers they had just run out of ribs. I was bummin', that's what I came for. I decided on the 1/2 smoked chicken. When I ordered my entree, he told me they were out of the chicken too. WTF was my response (not that it was his fault). I said we'd eat the apps and go somewhere else for dinner. When the wings and biscuits came I have to admit they were dynamite, so much so, we order a dozen more wings and just had them for dinner. They did offer me fried or rotisserie chicken from their sister restaurant Greenwoods. But I had my heart set on something smoked. It I wasn't so full I would have order a slice of their homemade apple or blackberry pie. I'm hungry just thinking about it. My advice is go early to get what you want.

Being a very critical BBQ reviewer I find that this place is really unique in a number of facets, first, it's very well located in downtown Roswell. Secondly, it's not really a hole in the wall per-se, sure it's located in an old barn of sorts and the chairs don't match, but this is really a well done establishment in terms of décor and atmosphere. Call it a yuppie hole in the wall if you will, it's well situated, upscale in nature with live music. On to the food, There's a lot to like about this place. First the main courses are always done well, the ribs are tender and smoked well, and there is a diverse offering of chicken including chicken wings and half chicken. They also have BBQ sausage, turkey, and you can actually choose between pulled or chopped meats which is also a plus. the sides are pretty outstanding, and plentiful. The slaw is your vinegar type which normally I'm not a fan of but this is well done. The fries, mac and cheese, and collard greens are all fantastic. The portions are large but be sure to hold out some room for their banana pudding. This is really unique and outstanding dish that combines my too favorite loves, banana pudding and chocolate chip cookies!! This wasn't my first go around with SAH, and I'll be back.... it's hard to decide sometimes on a place in Roswell now that Roswell hosts so many stand out restaurants, but this and Greenwoods across the street (same owners) are fantastic options and could be near the top of Roswell options. Speaking of which, if you know the menu at Greenwoods, you can typically order some of the dishes off of it at Swallow, and vice versa - for this i'd put this place on nearly 5 stars because Greenwoods rotisserie is darn near the best rotisserie I've ever had.

Came here after being shafted at Roux.. Everything happens for a reason! Great food, laid back atmosphere and very affordable! Me and the Mr. left super satisfied!! We went here by recommendation from a friend and wish we hadn't. The atmosphere is great, but the food was lacking. The pros: roasted wings, mac & cheese, and the coleslaw. The cons: The 3 sauce choices. Kansas City one was way too overpowering and sweet for my taste. The mustard one was the best out of the 3 but it still wasn't good in my book. The chopped pork was lacking flavor and had lots of gristle. The ribs weren't anything special; again lacking flavor. The brisket/sliced beef was tough and lacked flavor. Overall, we were not impressed and probably won't go back.

I am in no way a BBQ expert. YUM! Always packed with a great crowed, and fast service! Unlike some other BBQ places I have been to, not only is the meat delish but so are the sides. In particular this place turned me on to my first and still my favorite Brunswick stew! They also have some great specials so you can try a little bit of everything. I was very impressed. I wish I could have made it there during a performance. I also totally dig the decor with the exposed duct work.

Pretty tasty BBQ! Shared ribs and wings. My BF had the Brunswick stew and said it was the best he ever had. I had the salad and it was fresh and delicious. I particularly enjoyed the awesome wood paneling. They had a long list of desserts that sounded amazing but was just too full!

The sides, as others have stated, were great--far better than what you'd expect from a bbq restaurant. Regrettably, the bbq not so much. I got a brisket and turkey platter. The turkey, while good, had none of the bbq flavor I hoped for, and the brisket was tough. Really tough. I've seen criticisms, here, of Swallow's BBQ sauce. I believe they're unfounded. It's my guess the owner or the BBQ cook is from the Carolinas, because they have both a mustard-based South Carolina style, BBQ sauce, and a vinegar-based, North Carolina style BBQ sauce. I thought both were good. As someone who makes his own rub to use on meat cooked in a Texas style BBQ cooker at home with offset firebox (charcoal & hickory chunks used), I know what I expect when BBQ is made right. While the sauces were good and the sides were awesome, I'm sorry to say the beef and turkey were just fair. I've given Swallow 3 stars, but if it weren't for the sides, I'd have spotted them 2.

Hotlanta definitely has its share of great BBQ joints, but for my money, the Swallow tops the list. Nothing beats an order of their succulent pork platter, and their Mac & Cheese is unreal. Add in the authentic 'juke joint' atmosphere and the funky beer selection, and this is my go-to place for 'Que whenever I'm in town.

We absolutely love this place! The bbq is delicious and there are three different sauces (carolina mustard, vinegar based and hot sauce) on the table so you can fix the meat to your liking. For the non-meat eater, there are salads or a veggie plate. The vegetables are grown in the garden across the street so they are always fresh and seasonal. The homemade banana pudding is made with chocolate chip cookies instead of vanilla wafers. It is truly outstanding. The service has always been very good and friendly. We like to bring our dogs and sit on the porch but we recently went to dinner there and sat inside. There was a DJ playing real vinyl in the dining room! It wasn't annoying club-type music but more like funk and it was not so loud that you couldn't carry on a conversation. The only slightly negative thing that I would say about SATH is that it is a little expensive. However, it's not fast food and with local, seasonal ingredients on the menu I am definitely happy to pay a little more.

I decided to travel there as a result of a referral from a friend he recommended that I try the barbecue because it was very good in his opinion I tried it and did not really like it so I give it a 2. I should probably give them a second chance but when you been burned on the first trip there you tend not to want to give it another chance. Sorry to say that's my first and only time

Had the smoked sausage platter with fries and Mac n cheese. Washed it down with two beers. Friendly service. It was delicious food don't get me wrong. Just a tid on the pricey side for BBQ.

Fried green tomatoes are the best I have ever had. The ribs and brisket are amazing and the portions are more than enough, even for the hearty eater. I try to go here as much as I can when I am in Atlanta. It's one of my favorite rib joints in the ATL.

Good "Q" You walk in the door and the aroma of smoke'd BBQ gets you, no way you could leave without first having some seriously good "Q" Place is rustic, has a DJ playing some classic vinyl some evenings and live entereainment others. I go for the food first and foremost. The brisket is my favorite.

It'd been years since I'd been to SATH, but it was my turn to recommend a spot for the new co-op welcome lunch. She's from Michigan, and requested no chains, and nothing too Southern. Barbecue seemed a good compromise. So I called ahead to make sure that they could accommodate 12. They take reservations for parties of 10 or more, but said that there would be no problem for lunch. Lucky for us, it was the first warmer day after the last cold snap, and there was plenty of room for us on the porch. They took a few minutes to set us up, but the service was fast and friendly, as I'd remembered. I got the sweet tea, half and half, and to be honest, it was barely sweet. I used to always have a lunch buddy to be able to make a dent in the platters, but being a nursing mom, I managed one by myself. I definitely ate too much, but I just couldn't stop myself. I got the chopped pork platter with mac and cheese and collards. The mac and cheese is the oozy kind - heavy on the cheese and light on the flour. The collards were flavorful (but didn't appear to have bacon) and still pretty firm. Delicious. The pork was a little on the dry side, so I doused it in a combination of the sauces. They've got 3 sauces: NC style vinegar with spice, SC style mustard, and KC style smoky/runny sauce. To be honest, SATH doesn't have my favorite pork or sauce, but the atmosphere, service, and sides make it a favorite. I really should try the ribs sometime, but that seems to be just a tad overly gluttonous for lunch time. Despite the huge platter that I devoured, I couldn't resist the pie - it's the homemade pie from across the street (Greenwoods on Green Street), and I happily devoured half a "piece" (which is actually a quarter of a pie). I doubt I'll wait 2 years before I go back this time! #Yelp365 - 141/365

Gotta confirm what others have said -- meats seem a weak spot, rushed even. Nothing was truly fall off the bone and the chopped meats simply had too much uncooked fat for this joint to be rolling low enough for long enough. The good news is that this is correctable so long as management is willing to staff for a longer prep time. The flavors were quite good, but if they are unwilling to make this change, can't say I'd go back. That would be a double shame as the sides were great -- which again echoes what others have found. Baked beans were nuts, as was the mac n cheese. Biscuits too. But you gotta put the time in in the pit for it all to work together. PS -- Also terribly disappointed in the draft selection -- no local crafts on the day we visited. Again management could easily fix this fault.

Lunch today: Sweet tea: Strong, fresh, cold, and sweet....like a good Southern gal is used to!~ Babyback ribs (Sweet Kansas City sauce)-Meaty and moist Next time, we'll ask for no extra sauce to be brushed on. My friend had pulled pork sammy platter, and she said it was ok. She is partial to Carolina BBQ and noted that the sauces available where not close. Sides: Collard Greens (not cooked to death). They have a pepper sauce/vinegar flavor cooked in. Needed no additional seasoning. Mac & Cheese was fair, could have been Velvetta as far as the noodle and cheese sauce quality, but they add cheese to the top which makes it more homey. It was ok. Dessert: Had Coconut cream pie which I understand is made by their sister rest. (Greenwoods). IT WAS TI DIE FOR! Real custard, rich, and fresh. Great job on the pie. We will be back....it was yummy!

Pretty average bbq, not the best but certainly not the worst. Mac n cheese is ok but again not anything to write home about. My favorite item on the menu is the smoked sausage, it is split down the middle and grilled has a great flavor and is a refreshing standout in an overexposed bbq market like Atlanta. The restaurant itself is a comfy southern cafeteria style interior with plenty of outside seating. Bottom line: it's worth a taste but don't expect it to become your favorite place.

Very impressed! I love how this place is tucked away behind the busy strip of Roswell. The service was some of the best I've ever had! Jules was awesome!! My mom was in town visiting from Minnesota, and we took her here. The weather was perfect to sit out on the porch. The food was delicious and hot. Biscuits were to DIE for... make sure to add honey butter. I had a 1/2 rack of ribs, my mom had the BBQ turkey platter and my friend had turkey with a salad. The coleslaw was definitely homemade and had the best flavor. The side salad was also delicious... it had fresh red peppers, big bits of cucumber, tomato and gouda cheese. Their homemade honey mustard is also delicious and has a great kick to it. I highly recommend this place. True, authentic southern food.

Went to this establishment for the first time and frankly was disappointed. The service was great, the atmosphere was fine, the food was average. $16 bucks for a half rack of ribs is a little pricey, so I expected to get my socks blown off, but I didn't. They were tender, but lacked flavor really. The Mac and Cheese and Baked Beans also lacked seasoning. I'd probably eat there again, but not for the price they are charging.

Sorry folks. This place has lost me. Wont be back again. It's a shame because I wanted "the Swallow" to work. I love the vibe but thats about all it has these days. I found the food and experience to be below par. Will no longer take my family's 60 bucks.

This place is wonderful. My family has eaten there many times. The weakest part of the menu is the sides. Neither my wife nor I can find more than one that we really care for. But the entrees are really good, and music is nice too. 4 stars is a great rating. I have very few restaurants that I'd give 5.

This place looks like Merlott's from True Blood. Is about 2:49pm now but I'm sure at night time Layfette ass will come walking out of the kitchen. The staff seems cool. But dont be surprised if your a person of cokor like me, and one of the drunking patrons sees you and yells out "WE DONT LIKE YO KIND ROUND HEAR" dont sweat it, just punch them in the mouth. The food is pretty good. They don't have cornbread on the menu, but our waiter ran his ass across the street and got us some from a neihboring restaurant. I got the full slab of Ribs. Good god!!!! They were MASSIVE! Price wise its very reasonable. However we are in the south and in all fairness people down here dont have much money...... or much of anything for that matter. But any who not a bad bbq joint. I give it 4 starts for authenticity. From the vinyl records to the racist cowboy's with those tight ass ball crushing jeans.

Half-rack of tender juicy ribs and a couple of buckets of beer between my group. The highlight for me here was the Macaroni and Cheese, some of the best I have had. Well cooked with a slight crust but mostly just creamy goodness. Ribs were also outstanding. Ample parking, good music playing (they had a DJ playing classic rock) and I am told live music at times. When I find myself visiting newly OTP friends I will be lobbying for this place. I will go back. Friendly staff and no nonsense setup.

I gave this two stars only because I was hungry, they did serve food, and it was my date's choice . Anyone that gave this place more than a couple of stars obviously has never eaten "good" BBQ. I understand your ignorance. I would not go back here again, nor would I recommend this place to anyone.

Dinner with DW last Saturday nite. Probably my 6th or 7th visit over the last few years. No live music--that was fine with me--noisy place anyway with the tin ceiling. Wore my lime green SATH t-shirt that I bought years ago (no longer available) Male server said the t-shirt was the first thing he got there about 8 years ago when he started. Had my usual--chopped pork plate with potato salad, Brunswick stew, fried green tomatoes, hush puppies, a local beer and (yummy) coconut cream pie for dessert (from Greenwood's across the street) Everything was great as usual. They used to have a canoe just behind the counter filled with ice that they kept all the beer and wine in--it made the place quite unique, but.......server said they cleaned it out once and set it outside to dry and...someone stole it! It had some holes in the bottom, so of limited value to the thief. Some of the recent reviews imply that the place is going downhill--I won't pass judgment on that since I don't eat there very often. I do like the uniqueness of the place and either SATH or Greenwood's are a must visit when in the Atlanta area.

I was really looking forward to some good BBQ and searched this place out for lunch. Not bad, but not what I was looking forward to. They didn't offer a sampler or combo plate, so I ordered ribs, slaw and Brunswick stew. Unfortunately the best thing on my plate was the slaw. Which is ot a good thing for a BBQ place. I'd love to be able to say the ribs were delicious and smokey, but they were so drenched in sauce that I don't have a clue what the meat tasted like. There were 3 different kinds of sauce on the table, so someone must recognize that people have different tastes? And the sauce that was on the ribs wasn't very good.

Dang good southern barbecue. I got the sliced pork platter with fried green tomatoes and macaroni and cheese. My two dinner mates also has good looking plates. One got ribs the other got portobello mushrooms. I'd like to have the recipe for the Carolina mustard-based sauce.

My bf and I ate here last night, it's been a few years for us both since we've been. I feel like it's not as good as it used to be :( The service was wonderful for 8 on a Friday, got seated immediately. The $3 sweetwater IPA was a plus! The food wasn't too impressive though. His pork was a little bland. I got 4 veggie sides- coleslaw, eh nothing special and not much flavor. Mac&cheese, delicious. Baked beans, they weren't sweet, we were both sad about that. Collard greens, way too salty, couldn't really eat. I hate that neither of us were too impressed by the food bc we were excited to go back! The biscuit & toast were tasty though. Lastly, we got banana pudding to go. I used to be obsessed with it! Maybe we got a weird batch... But it didn't really taste like much. Whipped cream wasn't sweet at all. When we got to the very bottom it was very yummy though- but only like the last 2 bites. I don't see us going back anytime soon since they're are so many other options. They should bring back live music! Then we might return.

The food runner presented and emplaced our food on the table with such care and intensity, I thought he was preparing me for a religious experience. I was right. The food speaks for itself here. Best ribs ever. They were well-lacquered and cooked to perfection (see picture). The BBQ sauce is addictive. This is the stuff that dreams are made of. I love the rustic ambiance. Think log cabin. Overall, expect a no-frills place that prides itself on food and service. Brunswick stew was very good. Mac n cheese was outstanding. We had very attentive and friendly service. They also have a few unique draft choices. Get the full rack. You'll thank me.

Decided to give SATH another try. I came away with the same low opinion. Their food is just plain BLAND. A number of the reviews seem to find this same flaw regarding their offerings. Brisket was lacking in any kind of bark. ZERO outside seasoning. The beef tasted and looked more boiled than BBQ'd. Had to be drowned in sauce to come away with any sense of it being BBQ. Really- $15 tossed down the drain. Fried green tomatoes were so thick and hard- needed a knife to make my way through them. Mac n' cheese was the only high note. Cole slaw was another ultra bland dish.

On a nice fall day, this place is perfectly located...in fact you may drive right past it! We did find it, placed a to go order, and then strolled up and down the road, first to catch a softball game, then to explore for about 10 minutes. If you're keeping time, it's about a 15 minute wait for to go, not so bad. We ordered both a pulled/shredded beef platter as well as a half baby back ribs platter. Both platters came with two sides (we selected fried green tomatoes, potato salad, brunswick stew and mac & cheese...then threw in an order of collard greens). The ribs were very soft, almost fall off the bone soft with a slightly sweet flavor to them. Definitely would order these again. The shredded beef, even with the bbq sauce, was a tad bit dry, and didn't have much in the way of flavor. I think bbq sauce should enhance the flavor, not become the flavor you taste, and that's how I came away feeling about the beef. For a side break down, the potato salad was fantastic! Very fresh, potato peels left on the potato with a nice tangy homemade feel. I wasn't a fan of the fried green tomatoes (you only get two), since they seemed to be cooked in a heavily crumb breaded flower which I didn't like, and had a bland flavor to them. Mac & cheese wasn't bad, though slightly runny, and the collards were definitely soaked in vinegar to a sinus opening degree (i.e. very strong vinegar smell...they needed a little work). The brunswick stew, finally, was more like a brunswick soup, very soupy. i'm a bit of a brunswick stew snob, so the flavor out of the bowl wasn't fantastic, but add a little bbq sauce and it makes the flavor worth your purchase. We ended things with a slice of blackberry pie. Nice huge serving and great, fresh flavor. Not at all disappointing. The total cost was just over $40, with more than enough for leftovers for lunch the next day, so you get your money's worth in terms of portion size. Sides could use a little work, but nothing here is "bad", and many things are down right great.

I ordered the Chopped pork sandwich to go, it was huge, too large for me to finish but my cat came to help me out hahaha. It had a nice smokey flavor, the sandwich was packed with meat, sweet savory barbecue sauce was awesome. My favorite has always been the smoked wings, it has a little heat but it's a great way to start a perfect meal. Thanks to Bill Greenwood for another delicious restaurant to be added in the downtown Roswell community.

The place looks and smells of a classic barbecue joint. Rustic atmosphere and the portions are HUGE. Personally I found it a little loud, even with out a band. I felt I had to shout across the table (we sat 9). No chance to even hear others unless they were next to you or directly across. Even then you had to lean in to hear what they were saying. Service was average to below average. But could have been our waiter. Front of the house staff was beyond friendly! They sat us as an incomplete party (3 of 9). Personally I think everyone of their sauces are terrible. But I favor spice to sweet. My wife loves this place. Cooking technique is spot on! Parking is rough and the lot is a dirt/rock mix. Furniture is beyond rustic. Actually had a chair break on my blind step dad! He is almost 80 and about 220. Comp'd his meal but I felt the could have done more! A manager never showed themselves. Net net. I'd recommend you try it, wife would swear to it. I only go when everyone else wants to.

Five reasons to put Swallow at the Hollow at the top of your to-do list 1. Service Stellar. Emily is my new BBBQF. 2. Ribs Taaaaaasteeeeeeeey tender with very nice "bark" [which my serious Q buds tell me is the name for that crusty stuff on the outside of the ribs.] 3. Sauce Dark, thick, sweet. Many nappies required -- and provided. 4. Sides Rock here. Details: --I got the macNcheese and I was NOT disappointed. The M&C could be a meal all by itself. --The fried green tomatoes are so good they're rated X-cellent. They're lightly breaded with scallions on top and ranch dressing on the side. [Yes! Sides for my sides.] --Homemade biscuits with HONEY. Made fresh daily. And they taste like it. 5. Dessert Homemade PIE. [Coconut, chocolate, etc...] and chocolate chip banana pudding. Words cannot describe. Tidbits: --The AC is not working very well. Sit outside. It's nice! --This place is a hidden gem. I mean it's hard to find. It's tucked away on a teeny tiny street amid a cluster of other eateries. There's no signage. I finally found it when I saw all the BBQ hickory wood stacked up around the building. --I hear there's entertainment by bluegrass. country and other performers on the weekends. I need to come back for that. Backstory: There's a backstory here: I heard that the owner -- who also owns Greenwood's on Green Street, the restaurant across tiny Green street -- originally wanted to hang an old canoe in front of the joint as a sign. But the local gov'ment didn't cotton to that idea so the owner decided to nix the signage altogether.

Amazing ribs and sides!!! I just moved to GA and my husband swore I would love the ribs! He was right!!! Tender and juicy!! They had some sauce on the table; I stuck with the balsamic sauce... It had a great flavor; used it for our chicken wings too!! We were stuffed when we left... My husband of the portabella mushroom sandwich; It's safe to assume he liked it since he ate everything on his plate... My kids got a aside of Mac and cheese and ate all of it... ;) can't wait to go back!!

Good- not great. Super cute location in a really need old area of Roswell. Casual and fun place. I ordered the turkey (cause that's how I roll!) and a side of chopped pork since that's the only true way to measure Q. The Q was just ok. Portions were huge. Mac and cheese was really tasty! We 'd go back if we were in the area but not as a destination.

3.5 stars. 3 for the food (Brunswick Stew and mac & cheese was just ok, fried green tomatoes were delish), 2 for the small parking area (I kinda had to make my own space along the fence), 4 for the great service (staff did a great job with our huge 30 person work luncheon).

Get Rid of the TV's, A place this good doesn't need this kind of distraction. Watch as everyone stares at the TV's while shoveling there face like there comatose. I was one of them! I've been to the Swallow numerous times and remember it being good, but maybe I'm getting old or maybe I was spoiled by Oklahoma Joe's in KC, but this was not one visit to remember. I ordered the brisket and when it came out it had no flavor and was chewy. I couldn't even cut it with a knife and had to eat each slice whole. The pork my daughters shared had no flavor either. I mean, I could see the smoke ring, I could smell the smoke, so how do you not get any flavor in your food? I mean no flavor! So salt or pepper or anything. Are there no rubs being used? The sauces aren't great either. I had to drown my brisket just to eat it, which I hate using much sauce at all, but the sauces didn't help much. The Brunswick stew was good, as were the friend green tomatoes, but the slaw is meh. Also, what happened to the autograph photos? They were interesting at least, seeing as how the A/C couldn't keep up with the typical Atlanta heat/humidity. I'm sure we'll go back because it's a place the family has been going to for years, so we'll see what happens next time.

Was in the area for business and our colleagues (who are locals) chose where we would eat for our business dinner.. the name of this place still cracks me up, but don't let it deter you. We had a party of 11 for dinner. Everyone loved the green fried tomatoes (I've never had those before) the batter was light and crispy and they tasted great. Chicken wings were really good, lots of BBQ sauce and a little heat to them. For dinner I had a pulled pork sandwich (on Texas Toast- deeeelish!!) with mac and cheese and great garden salad. ALL really good. Although I would've loved to, I had no room for dessert. Maybe next time if I ever travel back to the ATL again. :) great atmosphere - a hidden treasure for sure!

Unimpressed. I think that is the best way to describe the swallow. I took a date out to this place, and both of us were seriously unimpressed. We both ordered a 1/2 rack of ribs for dinner. I had fried green tomatoes and Brunswick stew for my sides, while she had French fires and coleslaw. The ribs were just disappointing. She got the larger end of the rack, and I the smaller. My ribs were tough and dry at the larger end, though they did get better as I worked my way down to the smaller bones. If the whole rack had been as tender as my last bone, I would have been much happier. That wasn't the only problem, though. The ribs were absolutely drenched in way too much overly peppery, mediocre barbeque sauce. It seemed to me like they were trying to hide mediocre meat by drowning it in mediocre sauce, and hoping no one would notice. My date agreed. The sides were the next issue. Now, I didn't expect a whole tomato for my side, but I would have thought my portion would have been larger than two slices of fried green tomato, especially considering the price. The tomatoes themselves were ok, but a bit hard and undercooked for my taste. My Brunswick stew was not something I would order again. It tasted like watery Hormel hot dog chili, with some canned corn stirred in. I will say that the highlight of the meal was probably my biscuit, which was warm, fresh, fluffy, and buttery. Unfortunately, I was there for a barbeque dinner, not a biscuit breakfast. My date didn't care for her coleslaw either, and her French fries were definitely of the frozen Ore-Ida variety. How hard is it to serve fresh cut fries in a barbeque joint? The ambiance is one area where I thought they had it right, at first. I like the rustic look, and the place smelled amazing. In fact, letting my nose lead the way, I would have thought we were in for an amazing treat. Unfortunately, the anticipation was far better than the actual meal, and the ambiance fell apart shortly into our dining experience. No long after we sat down, a DJ started playing in the back of the restaurant. Now, I expect the music to be loud if there is a live band playing, but this was just some woman spinning discs, some of which matched the clientele and atmosphere, and some that did not. She had the volume way too loud, and even though we were seated as far as possible from her, I could barely hear my date. This isn't a club, it's a barbeque joint. Someone tell her to turn it down. All in all, I would have to say that I won't be returning to the Swallow. Mediocre barbeque that has received far more hype than it deserves. I should have nothing something wasn't quite right when the menu listed just generic beef barbeque, with no mention of brisket, or what cut they were using. There are much better places in Atlanta, like JD's BBQ out in Acworth. Keep searching.

This restaurant is next to my mother-in-law's nursing home, so I guess we will be frequent visitors (if we can afford it!). First impression (this was at lunch on a Sunday)...homey, comfy, friendly staff, clean. The tables are a little close together...as we entered and left, you had to swerve and dip and detour to get a path to the door without hitting someone with your rear. Open kitchen, which I really, really like. Ice tea is in clear containers, so you can see that it is fresh and clear, not murky. WEDGES of lemon...kudos! Bathrooms were sparkling (of course, they are stainless steel...so I would imagine they are pretty easy to clean!). Now to the food...I am a bbq junkie, but I don't go to the Swallow for bbq...I go for the smoked wings. They are fantastic. They are smokey and meaty with just enough char on them and a hint of heat. The only thing that I absolutely HATE is that they are served on bamboo skewers. Now, I understand why they cook them with the skewers...they can char one order of wings on both sides, which they do perfectly. But for God's sake, I wish they would remove them from the skewers before they bring them to the table!!!! Why? You ask? I'll tell you. You have six wings, skewered with two bamboo skewers served to you in one of those little plastic, wax paper lined baskets (I wish they would ban those from bbq restaurants!). Now, the skewered wings are actually a little longer than the basket, and they are HOT. So you have a dilemma...how to get the wings off the skewers. You can't hold the bottom wing and pull, because the wings are scalding hot and covered with a delicious sauce. If you try to hold the skewers upright and try to slide a wing off with your fork, you end up with either wings all over the table or wings all over your lap. If you wait, the wings get cold. It's a lose-lose-lose situation. Is it cute having them served on the skewers? Sure, it is! Is it practical? Hell, no. Two kids at the table next to me also got wings and I watched both kids and the parents trying different things...none very successful. I can't vouch for the rest of the food...but my co-foodie ordered a chopped bbq sandwich with fries and slaw and got the bbq plate instead...which is about $5 more. He said the bbq was good, coleslaw was ok, fries were the dregs from the bottom of the batch...all broken bits and pieces. Because of the mix-up in the order, our lunch bill (with tip) was $32...a bit pricey for lunch. Would have been better if he had gotten the sandwich that he ordered. In their defense, though, we did not correct them or ask them to switch it out. All in all, a good experience and we will return; it just wasn't a great experience.

Down home BBQ in upscale downtown Roswell. This place has just about became my favorite stop in Roswell these days. The smoked turkey sandwich and collars greens are epic, and do yourself a favor and try them today. Wow! Love this place.

Summary: pretty good ribs and service but sides are a bit lacking I went to SATH on a Saturday night with a party of 15, and we really enjoyed our experience. First and foremost, service was great - super quick and efficient, especially for a large party. My friend and I shared a full rack of ribs, which comes with 2 sides and your choice of bread. The biscuit was fantastic, and the ribs were flavorful. They weren't my favorite, but they did have a good crust, and the sweet sauce at the table tasted really good with them. The collards were pretty sour, but I liked them. The mac and cheese, frankly, was terrible. They tasted like they were made out of the box. I am a huge fan of mac and cheese, and I should've listened to other Yelp reviewers. I was definitely not impressed. Someone at my table also mentioned that the Brunswick stew was not fantastic either. We got the choc chip banana pudding for dessert. It's a huge bowl of banana pudding, although a lot of it is whipped cream. I don't like bananas, but this pudding was pretty good. The bananas tasted very fresh, and the pudding was light and didn't have an overpowering banana taste, probably because it was balanced out by the chocolate chip cookies. Overall, I enjoyed my meal at the restaurant, but I don't think I'd go back. There are a lot of great BBQ options elsewhere.

I ordered the Sliced beef, also known as, beef brisket. I had very high expectations of this place because it got 4 stars, and also because my friend kept raving and drooling about it. Unfortunately, it wasn't that great. The brisket wasn't tender and it was a little dry. I tried my friend's shredded pork and I much prefer that over the beef brisket. So if you come here, I would order the shredded pork. If you want brisket, go to Heirlooms! Although I do not really eat dessert, I have to admit the banana pudding was pretty good. The chocolate chip cookie they put inside of it and on top of it made the dessert!

Like Alex said, you expect better from this place, but it fails somehow to deliver. While by far not the WORST BBQ, it's nothing special. I like their sauce OK, but you end up doing a science project at your table to mix the different sauces together to make something edible to drown the mediocre meat with. I will say that the chopped pork is far better than the pulled. That extra char gives it something extra. I also like the chocolate chip cookie banana pudding. However, this was only accomplished by the amazing idea to throw a cookie into ordinary banana pudding!! Go if you're in the area (as opposed to Dreamland's slop), but don't make a special trip!

Why is this place not better than it is? The same folks involved with this place, also have Greenwoods across the street. The sides across the street are awe inspiring. The ones here are thoroughly lackluster. No matter what direction I approach this place from, there's a better barbecue joint before I get here whose meat and sauce I like more. If you find yourself right here, do yourself a favor and walk across the street to Greenwoods. Make sure you get a slice of pie.
