Went there with my wife during Geranium festival. We got our table quite fast but the waitress was totally clueless about menu selection. We order hamburgers and she said order included French Fries. Not so so we were stiffed $2.50 for each order of fries and waiter never comes back to refill our drinks. Burger was totally soaked in a basket and impossible to pick up so and to eat it with fork and knife. Tomato on it was good but meat had absolutely no taste. Worst burger ever. Next morning we both had terrible diarrhea going on second day. Obviously dirty kitchen and not proper food handling. I will stay away.

Located in a nice area; the restaurant fits in with the historic district. I ate breakfast it was good 3.5. I however look forward to the lunch and dinner.

Nice place for a quick breakfast. I haven't tasted anything there that was that special that I would drive out my way for. I do think it was cool that they filmed a tv show there but I would have left those cute little touches up the show added to make the diner just a bit more quaint.

It took an inordinately long time for our very mediocre food to be served. Wish I had not tried this place.

Great local resturant right in the Mcdonough square. I have only eaten breakfast but it was fantastic. Cozy local feel & great for familys! Resturants like this are unfortunately a dieing breed. Please give them some business.

Great little place to eat breakfast. Very personable, friendly (also German speaking) service. Reasonable prizes, nothing fancy shmancy, just the way I like it. The biscuit sandwich with egg and cheese could have used a bit more salt, the sausage gravy had too much pepper for my personal taste. French Toast was tasty and fluffy, a bit too much cinnamon. I prefer powder sugar and adding cinnamon myself. Overall a great little place, not a chain!

We've been for breakfast twice so far. Great variety of foods, prepared well and reasonably priced. The environment is rustic and a bit severe but in a good, old-timey way. Very casual; friendly staff. Metered street parking is the only negative but hardly insurmountable, just plan ahead. The location is in the city Square which is scenic/historic.

Took an hour to get meal after waitress lost order. Had to eat on the run. The staff did not even think to discount the meal due to the ridiculous service. Very disappointed. Don't go unless you have a lot of time.

Southern breakfast at its best! We had a country sampler plate and a fried chicken breakfast plate. The fried chicken was perfect! Flavorful, wet inside, and crispy outside. On a fluffy biscuit and topped with gravy, and it was heaven. The country sampler plate had creamy grits, gravy, biscuit, smoked sausage, and streak-o-lean, which is like fatback. Also, a pancake and 3 eggs. We left in a food coma.

If you looking for Good Down Home cooking! This is the spot! The entire menu is banging!!! They have daily vegetables on the white board, you must try one if those!!! The breakfast is on point, too! I don't think there is a waffle in the area because of Gritz! That says a lot! You must try the cabbage casserole, fried green tomatoes and the hamburger steak. To die for!!!!!

First visit and I'll for sure go back! Had a little bit of a wait to sit but it's cause the place was packed! I tried the sampler so I could see what I liked (plus an order of french toast on the side) and everything was delicious! Really enjoyed the homemade biscuits! Our waitress Jennifer was probably the best I've had the pleasure to be served by. For sure going back!

I love this place. We always get Kim as our server and she's not only consistently efficient, she's such a sweet person! She likes to get to know her frequent customers and her memory is super sharp when it comes to what you like. When she sees us, come in, she brings us our usual drinks straight away and we don't even need to ask! We've been eating there regularly for about two years. The food always comes out very quickly. I've only had an issue one time and it involved the ham (always delicious like it was just smoked) in my omelette. They chop it up into small cubes and that particular time, it seemed like there was more fat than ham. When I showed Kim, she took it back to the kitchen, and they promptly made me a new one. She ended up taking it off our bill, as well! I'm telling you, the customer service is superb. I will definitely continue visiting my favorite little breakfast spot!! Go check it out!

Just about the best breakfast you will find in McDonough... or anywhere close by for that matter. Everything is cooked perfectly to order, and the portions are very large. It tends to get crowded as it is is a very small space in a very old building, but the wait is definitely worth it, and the servers are very attentive and nice. I recommend the pecan pancakes. Very good. I will have to try their lunch one day very soon.

Cool small town diner atmosphere. Appears to be family run. Everyone is friendly and the food is priced right. There is a breakfast menu and a separate lunch menu. All full of small town, home made deliciousness. Pay for your check @ the register and leave those g.r.i.t.s. a good tip!

Ordered food for take out. The pecan pancakes and bacon were very good. Delicious home style breakfast. Friendly welcoming staff. Traffic was a bit tight around the area but it was well worth it.

Great food. Great service. Friendly atmosphere and staff. What more could you ask for? I'm new to area, and they definitely made me feel welcome. True Southern Hospitality. I now frequent this place quite a bit.

Gritz is a McDonough staple and I'm so glad it's remained on The Square for so many years. The food is hot, fresh and delicious and the wait staff has always been friendly. They can get pretty busy, but they'll still take care of you and your family.

I really wanted to like this place. The atmosphere was great, and the restaurant is close to home. The place was busy on a late Saturday morning, and my date and I had to sit at the soda fountain/bar facing the kitchen. It took a while for us to be noticed, understandable. Once we were finally noticed, we ordered right away. Food came...finally, much later than one should expect,, and piecemeal. From my vantage point, I literally got to see my corned beef hash grow cold over a very literal fifteen minute period, waiting for our server, and I use the term loosely, to reappear from the beyond and bring it five feet over to me. The pancakes, well... They never came... Until I asked the waitress to please take then off the bill since we didn't actually get them. Oh, we'll give them to you to go! No, thank you. The gentleman, again used loosely, at the till, whom we assumed was the owner or manager, watched the whole event happen with extreme disinterest. Never said a word. Never tried to help. Too busy you ask? No, not that busy. So the service was atrocious; how was the food? Well the hash was gross and inedible in its coldness. The pancakes though were the lightest I've ever had seeing as how I didn't actually get to eat them. The rest of the food? Experience probably colored my perception, but it was just...meh. Of close, our displeasure was addressed to the gentleman twiddling his thumbs in great concentric circles of bored aloofness at the register. Were we comped? Were we discounted? No, but someone did run the pancakes out in a go box. I didn't accept. DId I tip? Yes, I.did. Will I go back? No. No, I will not. Should you go? Sure. If so, Godspeed and good.luck.

The best southern home style restaurant in the McDonough area in terms of quality service and price. Park on the square and dive into the biggest fried chicken biscuit of your life.

Yummy! Yummy! I just discovered I have no need to ever visit over crowded Cracker Barrel again while I live in McDonough! So much better! I got the 4 sides plate and had a hard time choosing because there were so many good options! Fried Green Tomatoes were wonderful and so was the chicken and dumplings! My husband got the Rueben and loved it! We will be back again! Next time for breakfast!

I feel like I need to provide some context to what you should expect at Gritz aside from just the food, as the experience is defined by more than just the menu. Gritz is in a REALLY old building. It's been there since before the roads in McDonough were paved. The tables are probably older than I am. The "booths" appear to be made mostly of old church pews. These things provide a special character that you just can't find in many other places. The menu is clearly the "down home southern" variety. They write the daily specials and veggie selections on huge white boards that are on either side of the room. The floors are old wood planks. High ceilings and a small bar at the front counter for to go orders or to eat by yourself. Even in a town that has grown as large as McDonough, Gritz has managed to keep itself set apart with a distinct small town feel. The staff will know you by name once you've been a few times. If you get there early, Kim usually opens. She'll have your "usual" memorized in no time and bring you your drink of choice as soon as she sees you come through the door. Not only that, but she usually keeps me out of the dog house by reminding me that I need to order something to take home to the wife. Between about 7-8 on any given day you'll find the morning regulars there. Get yourself a cup of the coffee and strike up a conversation with anyone. They are always friendly. As if this wasn't enough, the food is great. You can order of the menu or get just about anything any way you like it. If you want something special they can almost always get it for you. I especially like the food if you can hop in before they get busy. Seems to take on a quality even better than usual. If you order a kid's pancake it will come out in the shape of a popular mouse head/ears. They will do the little things to make sure you have a memorable experience. And like any good southern stop they keep pepper sauce on the table to cover your green. I usually go for breakfast, but I've had their lunch on half a dozen opportunities and it's a great place to enjoy an inexpensive and tasty meal. I highly recommend it.

I have NO CLUE how this restaurant has a decent star rating, it's disgusting. Run, run away quickly! One.big.flavorless.grease.pit! Tried it twice, both times for breakfast. Both times equally disgusted. Hash browns soggy in oil, undercooked and unseasoned. Eggs? Equally greasy. 2 people each had a different meal each time...so 4 meals sampled. All...well...gross. It's sad because the square needs a good breakfast joint, or grits needs a new cook.

My little family and I recently moved to GA from the good ol'northeast and have been trying to find something good to eat ever since. My Sister in Law and I met up for lunch in the square and decided on Gritz. Its a small little diner with wooden booths and tables down the center. Very original and very cool. During lunch time it gets very busy and usually there is a wait. I got a reuben lunch special and it was good not Boston good but it was good enough to fix my craving. The waitresses are attentive even though they seem not to be when its slammed. You have to pay up at the "bar looking" area which can be a hassle since you are in the way of the waitresses but they seem to maneuver around you. Would I come back here? yes Would it be my first choice? no

I am from out of town and feel sort of out of place in such a fast paced town. However, with this being said. Gritz made me feel perfectly at home. The pot roast and potatoes were TO DIE FOR. And the sides weren't too far behind. I could have embarrassed myself with the corn casserole. It was that good. I had never had it before...so glad I tried it. For sure next time I visit I will try the burger. Gentlemen next to our table had one...looked great. So if you are visiting or just looking for the perfect southern cafe. I strongly suggest gritz on the McDonough Square.

Let me start by saying...order the fried okra and the Mac & Cheese...period. I could have just eaten that and been in Southern cooking heaven. But I had ordered the turkey and gravy meal...and that was good also. But I'm going back for that fried okra...the owner said they bread it their themselves, and from what I know...it has to be the truth cause I have never tasted anything else so good. Tables are tight...and a bit confusing on how to get a seat...but so what!

I was in town for the weekend visiting a friend and the breakfast I literally ate at this place almost every day that I was there! This place has an amazing "old school" southern breakfast menu! Their food is extremely well priced and the service is super friendly. The restaurant has an cozy, hometown feel to it and it is not at all fancy. Just a nice little "breakfast joint" with home cooked food. I highly recommend the salmon cakes! Super yummy!!

It was delightful. Prompt service, friendly staff, and the food was great. Lots of choices on the menu and your cup won't be left empty. I highly recommend Gritz to those looking for a great meal and those wanting to avoid the chain restaurant blahs.

I was really excited about trying this place because the reviews were mostly 5. We decided to give it a try since we were hungry. The place smelled funny. There was dishes in the back by the restrooms and it was dirty. The food was okay. Nothing spectacular. The food was very bland. I got pork chops with mash potatoes and gravy. I wouldn't recommend it.

Great home cooking on the square, Sometimes you have to wait a while but it is well worth it for great food on a budget! The place is always busy and the food is hot and fresh. Service is what southern hospitality should be, friendly and caring with a smile!

Down home southern establishment located on the square. Stopped in for a little Saturday morning brunch because (how many times can you eat at waffle house?). Had the French Toast and sausage, the sausage was a little over cooked but was decent. Everyone enjoyed there meal & it's a nice step back in time. I have to agree with Peto George is one of the most friendliest & personable waiters around & brighten my meal.

You have to know first that this is not place to go on a date. If you are looking for a nice lunch or breakfast with tight budget, this is the place. The thing I loved most is the atmosphere! Many people chatting, talking, running in hurry and noisy. In short its LIVELY! Don't step in if you don't like such ambiance. Menu is limited but has everything you need. I think they actually make the food after you order it unlike food chains where you just get the reheated stuff. So you won't get your food ready in a minute like drive through burgers but your wait will be worth it. And of course it helps when the person behind the cash counter is very friendly and fun to talk with.
