Best Malaysian food since Little Malaysia closed. Better than the other one on Buford Highway.

Okay, so I copped out and had Pad Thai, which was excellent, by the way! The extensive menu, my fatigue, needing to get food in my belly, etc. resulted in a safe pick. But, holy cow are there choices aplenty (crispy pork intestine, and curry fish head for the intrepid out there)! Service is as described by many before me...en masse, yet somehow very attentive (Maybe they are all talking amongst themselves over there by the Gilligan's Island boat.). The fifth star will come, I am sure, when I can fully wade into the menu. Come hungry.

I found this place through Yelp because it had great ratings. I went there for lunch and have to say that it did not disappoint. This is probably my favorite Asian food place I have found so far in the Atlanta area. It was a great place for lunch as they had a very inexpensive lunch menu and it was served incredibly fast, was freshly prepared, and tasted amazing. I had the mango curry chicken, my wife had General Tso's, and we liked both of them equally. We will definitely be going back here.

I love this place. My favorite dish is a braised lamb shank. It is in a sweet and spicy curry and cooked perfectly! The other lamb curry dish was less impressive. It is chunks of lamb stew meat. The flavor was still really good but the lamb was a bit dry. Other than that everything was great including the service.

Love this place and go about once a month tot he Buford Hwy location. Tropical tacky décor with great prices and good food. We always order the roti canai as a starter and mixed satay. I like the Tom Yom soup without noodles and with chicken and rice on the side. My husband always gets the chay kuey teow or Singapore noodles.

i had it once when i was looking for another place but ended up just eating in there for lunch. order the bread w/ curry which was ok. my gf order their penang chicken with oil rice, chicken taste = none, taste like came out of the steamer, the rice is ok. i had seafood w/ ricenoodle which was not bad until i found some of the noodle not cooked yet. it wasnt busy when i was there service was ok food was ok so just ok lol oh we order soybean drink with was 60% ice so i guess we ordered the watered down ones

Agreeing with the other reviewers, the wait staff remembers my preferred dishes everytime I come in. Usually I won't know what to order, and trust in the server's recommendation, which is always superb. The lunch is always ready quickly making short take-out trips on those short lunch days.

Big, big, fan of Penang. I cannot say enough about the food and the incredibly friendly staff. These guys literally give the royal treatment to their return customers. My butt would barely have touched the seat before a cold one was placed in front of me and a friendly face was asking how I was doing. If you're a fan of the genre, it's a must.

Penang has of yet to let me down. I have been there many times and every time i have received great and friendly service. The dishes I have tried have all been superb. I highly recommend this place. They also have some superb Thai food as well :)...

Love the variety here. Wife loves the pineapple fried rice. Anything curry is very good. Kids love the satay and "pancake" appetizers. I love the sticky rice and bean dessert. Owners very outgoing and remember us each time.

Okay after having this restaurant recommended by a co-worker and coming to this site and reading the positive comments . I thought I'll treat myself and fam to a nice meal today, its been quite awhile since I've been somewhere that truly impressed me. We ordered chicken satay, spring rolls, roti cani, beef chow fun, pad thai, and peanut chicken, fried bannans and pulut hitam i think it was called. Okay the peanut chicken was on the table when we left the others were okay. I was surprised by the roti cani it tasted better than it looked. I don't plan to go back because it was average at best. And I drove all the way from Buford to Kennesaw for what I could get just down the street.

Excellent food and service every time I eat here. The Malaysian dishes are incredibly seasoned and are flavor sensations. We had the fruit salad with shrimp paste sauce...sweet, spicy and delicious. For dinner I had the coconut curry chicken which was the best I ever had. My partner had the salmon...which was crispy deep fried and topped with an awesome sauce. The snowpea greens were sauteed in garlic and were better than any greens I have ever eaten

AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS! This place is a SCAM! Check your credit cards! They will overcharge you and do nothing about it when confronted. They should be deported for running a fraudulent business! PS the kitchen smells like a decaying rat cage. Up yours Penang.

A regular spot! Service and food times are prompt. So many options on the menu. Never had a bad dish.

One of our favorite spots to eat!!! The food is great & the desserts are too! We have fallen in love with all the staff who remembered us after we moved, 3 years later. The Roti, Achat, any of the soul warming soups, & the curry bowls are just right up our ally! My husband is into those out of the box dishes too, like Fried Pork Intestines. If you haven't had Malaysian for, you should give it a try! Don't forget to try one of their sweet treats too! Yum yum bubble tea, the Bo Bo Cha Cha, Ice Kachang, &/or Ice Cendol. These desserts are uniques & out of this world yummy.

It was a so so dining experience for us. The apps were average and the jicama in our roll tasted frozen or old. The roti was tasty but very oily. Our entrees were just ok. I ordered mine Thai spicy and it had a little kick but not too intense. What bothered me the most was the amount of shrimp cake that was in my dish even though it was not listed as an ingredient in the menu. We actually had to ask our server because I couldn't tell what it was. Our service was nice and the one lady was super friendly. The overall verdict for us was that it wasn't what were expecting considering the glowing reviews. We won't be back especially with the amount of other Thai cuisine in the area.

Penang Malaysian Cuisine was in a word, disappointing. The sprawling confused menu, containing photos of the cuisine contained items numbering well into the triple digits (not an exaggeration). I was half expecting Robert Irvine to enter and demand the chef to make one of everything. There may be some decent dishes buried within that manual, but good luck finding them. Aside from the decent appetizer (Roti Canai), we sure didn't. My dish was just bland, my date's 'Thai' dish contained baby corn and was vastly over priced for what appeared to be cheap Chinese take-out. Thai food does not contain baby corns, sorry. I will say the staff was well trained, friendly and quick -- definitely a bright spot. I'm surprised at all the positive reviews for this restaurant since there are MUCH better Asian restaurants not far. Perhaps the other diners happened to find the needle in the haystack of a menu, or more likely they haven't been to so many other restaurants that blow this one out of the water in the taste department.

Terrible. For some AUTHENTIC malaysian cuisine, try Mamak on buford highway, it currently has the only malaysian cuisine around worth thinking about. You will not be disappointed as they have this tawdry business beat in any aspect possible.

I really enjoyed our experience here. It doesn't have a fancy, pretentious ambience, just straight up good food. Staff are very jolly and attentive but not overbearing. The kids really really enjoyed the shrimp puffs. Best part of it all, they gave us free fish food for their coi fishes ( and yes fishes is also correct) at the front. It was fun!!!

Excellent South Asian food. Must try if you are a foodie and like good authentic Asian food. The staff are extremely friendly and explains things to you if you are not sure of what you are ordering. Can't wait to come here again

First time here for lunch- Roti canai (appetizer) Rendang Chicken (Entrée- Lunch portion) Delicious as I would've expected and service was polite and efficient. The overall bill came to ~10.50$ excluding tip. I'll definitely go again =)

I'm a Malaysian who used to work nearby. This was my go-to lunch spot when I'm craving for some home town flavor. I especially love the beef rendang (dried curry) on the lunch special menu. It's tasty, very tender, and inexpensive. My American co-workers love this dish too, just FYI. My other favorite dishes are Nasi Lemak (a rice dish with various goodies), Kari Mee (curry noodle), Mee Goreng (Indian Style friend noodle), and char kuey teow (pan fried flat noodle). I've not tried many dishes here and I'm sure there are other delicious and authentic dishes on the menu. Besides, the waiters are always very friendly to me and another Malaysian co-worker.

Authentic Asian cuisine: some of my favorites are: salty fish fried rice, fried chicken, pad Thai noodles, salt and pepper squid. They owners and severs are all very friendly.

I travel to Kennesaw at least once a month for CA on business. This place is fantastic! I love Thai food and they have such a variety of choices. The staff is very friendly. I eat here almost every time I come out to GA.

Don't be put off by the strange landscaping outside the front door. Pink cows. Koi pond. Fish food. Signage made from metal letters from the local hardware store. Inside the place is eclectic, too. But forget all that. The food is the star at Penang. Here are the highlights... Roti Canai - thin, warm, slightly sweet bread that's served with yellow curry for dipping. The flavors are out of this world. Pad Thai - deliciously sweet and spicy rice noodles with chicken and shrimp - as good as you'll find anywhere. Rendang with chicken or beef - this dish has a little kick - ask for medium to Thai spicy if you like it like that. Just sheer goodness on a plate. Crispy duck is good, but not great. It's a half duck cut into large pieces. It's not that the dish is bad or dry or anything, it's just hard to eat. The skin is a lovely deep brown, slightly sweet and indeed crispy, but again a bit hard to eat. The only dish I've had that is not outstanding is the Tom Yum Gai soup. I could not put my finger - or my palate - on the exact problem, but if you've liked this dish elsewhere like me I'd recommend getting a small taste of the broth for comparison. The gentleman server is wonderfully gracious and helpful. Service is fast, fast, fast and always attentive, and the family is always there watching over their house. What a nice find in Kennesaw.

I used to eat here very often with my co-workers when we were working on a project in the area. They have the same tasty food as their sister restaurant on Buford Highway. The same delicious roti canai, rendang beef, nasi lemak (curried chicken with rice, pickled vegetables, anchovies and a fried egg), kari ayam and everything else. The servers here are super-friendly, but since their English is not the best, they use some words without quite knowing what they mean, which sometimes creates a rather funny situation. For example, one of the times I was here for lunch with my team, I had a new haircut (or some different style), which one of the servers noticed (they all recognized me and knew what I wanted to order when I walked in the door), and he commented that I looked "sexy" (obviously not realizing what that word really meant). Need I say that this made me the object of sport for my colleagues for the rest of that day, and many more days to come?

I use this restaurant 3 days a week. I think it's the best restaurant in Atlanta. Staff are very friendly. Of course food is good too. I recommend curry beef stew noodle. It's noodle in soup curry. A lot of beef in the soup. And please try "Chili Bari". You can order for free. It's just fresh chili. After you get "Chili Bari" , pour soy sauce and screw it by spoon. It's very hot sauce and matched every meal. You can enjoy deferent taste by add this sauce in several batches.

Incredible variety, fresh ingredients, knowledgable and friendly staff(assistant server / busboy rattled off the ingredients of a very complex dish - without hesitation as he cleared plates) we thoroughly enjoyed our lunch. Definitely ready to make this a frequent stop,to go through the menu thoroughly. Most of the entrees have a gr8 photo--and our entrees really matched the picture!!!

I went to this restaurant because of the good reviews on yelp. After I was seated I ordered some coconut soup, they bought out the wrong soup and then got angry because he bought the wrong soup. I ordered drinks when I was seated and those drains never came. When I did receive my entrée the total meal was cold and it was not tasty. The bottom line here is I will not be returning, the service was horrible and so was the food. I'm not sure how they receive all the stars maybe I just had a bad experience!

Yelp is normally a reliable source of restaurant recommendations and as I travel a bit, I've come to rely upon it. This time, I was severely disappointed. Here for lunch we're having the lunch special and boy, is it special. Specially bad - bland and tough yellow curry chicken that was supposedly spicy. As the Raven said, Nevermore.

Excellent choice for an Asian "twist" on the typical! The roti canai was excellent. The curry was outstanding. We will definitely be back- this one goes on to our regular rotation for sure!

Great service! Great food! Our server was so speedy, helpful, and humble. The food came out so quick! Tried the Calamari appetizer, mango chicken, and the Ice Kacang. I couldn't complain about anything. Will be back for more.

It's hard to admit given my tendency to heap praise on all things Buford Highway, but I think I like Penang's Kennesaw location better. However, I've been to both many times. Latest meal was a lunch delivery to my office by a co-worker - beef rendang, one of my favorites. I probably like the spicy curry beef stew most of all, but that's more a winter choice. Best Thai/Malaysian in the city, especially since Asam House closed.

Penang will always hold special memories of Great food and times. We always get either the thai chicken or the sesame chicken with the calamari. Always great service! Huge proportions. It is always quite! The food is high quality.

  • David G.

I love this restaurant for its consistency and reasonable prices. The Char Kueh Teow is a great dish (spicy rice noodles with calamari and shrimp, $8.50)--Number 40 on the menu. And the Number 116 is a seafood entrée with calamari, shrimp and scallops in pepper sauce cooked to perfection. The portions are substantial and the tastes are diverse. Penang is a great addition when choosing a quality ethnic restaurant.

Help! Someone call Restaurant: Impossible I went to this restaurant based upon the high reviews of others on yelp...unfortunately I was very disappointed. My first impression when I went inside was the decor, it desperately needs a complete makeover. It's definitely not a place to take out a girl you are trying to impress. Perhaps I'm a bit spoiled, but when I go to a Malaysian or Thai restaurant I'm expecting a fine dining atmosphere, not a cafeteria type ambiance. Now on to the food...I really love curry, but the food here is quite a disappointment. It is edible, but indubitably not memorable. I would unequivocally not recommend this place to any of my friends. The food is served on cheap plastic bowls and plates, which only accentuates the lack of quality in the preparation of the meals. The only thing that was decent was the service, the staff are very friendly and helpful...but because of the food, I will not be returning there again. This place needs to call Robert Irvine to do a complete makeover of the whole restaurant.

I like this place A LOT!! My fav is the Char Kueh Teow which is this noodle bowl with shrimp and calamari in this rich sauce! I always add some broccoli or bok choy or whatever green they have! My husband always gets the mango chicken which they bring out in a hollowed pineapple (yes I know I said mango but I don't make it), it is SO good!! Does not come with rice you have to order that by itself but whatever! I don't share a bite with the hubby bc I love my noodles and I always leave feeling STUFFED but that is bc of this Ammmmaaazzzing dessert dish they have called the Mango Sticky Rice topped with this warm rich coconut sauce. DON'T KNOCK IT TILL YOU TRY IT! I thought the same thing, ewww but no really its amazing. Try it. You can thank me later. I want to point out this is NOT A CHINESE RESTAURANT. Don't come here and get all upset because they don't have seasame chicken.. there is a mall across the street you can take your butt over there and get crappy Chinese food. This is a Malaysian/Thai place and it is one of my favs!

  • Aine S.

Great service, but the food wasn't all that great. Kinda bland. Had fun feeding the koi though. Could have done without the owner's grandson running around while we were trying to be seated, and then later eat.

Ok, first of all I eat Asian Food every week, Chinese, Thai, Malaysian you name it . After all the great reviews on Yelp decided to go. The place looks like a bad garage sale décor is cheesy with junk everywhere, no flow to the place. Tom Yum soup had 1 shrimp that was not cleaned overdone with tomato broth, throw in a bunch fake crab sticks and frozen seafood what a mess. Spring Rolls, soggy undercooked with some sweet flavor. Entrees had rice noodle dish with chicken, very little chicken at all, GREASY with no flavor, did not have pepper flakes to spice it up. Brought extra napkins to us, lifted them off plate and behold the plate was plastic with characters from the movie Cars ! What cannot afford decent plates? serving on kids plates. Lastly, overheard the waiter hawking some pre packaged desserts that they sell to go . Ranks up there with one of the WORST dining experiences I have ever had. The cheesy décor and misspelled signs out front should have been a clue. Menu is mish mash with no organization at all. Do not go ever! Gordon Ramsey would flip out on this place it belongs on Kitchen Nightmares!!!!!

The Good - Nice service - Authentic Malaysian food - Reasonably priced for local food - Can speak and understand English well - Char Kuay Teow fried noodles are authentic and tastes very good The Bad - The hallway going to the toilet is quite a run down area. There was a ladder going to the attic. - Can be a bit pricey compared to normal food - Decor can be a bit old, paintings in the wall are dirtied Overall Nice restaurant to try if you don't always want to eat the same thing. Come here to try something different and I'm sure you'll like it.

Delicious food and such a friendly staff - I really enjoy their Roti Canai - if you haven't had it yet, try it as an appetizer! Lots of variety but be careful what you order - if you are not sure you should ask!

A good friend introduced me to Penang about 2 years ago while I was in Kennesaw on business. I've made a point of stopping by a least once every trip ever since! To start the food quality, price & consistency is great. I've found it quite challenging finding decent asian food in Kennesaw, especially being a picky Vancouverite that has access to more asian food that Asia itself it seems. I was very pleasantly surprised when I found that their dishes more than live up to the challenge. The service is also a huge selling point. All of their staff are very friendly, knowledgable, and helpful with suggestions if you're not sure what to get. The beef rendang is quite tasty if you are feeling like something dark & heavy. I also recommend the appetizer calamari. I've had calamari all over the world, and even at a number of different malaysian joints but this is among my favourite. The trick is definitely in their breading, and probably in the oil they use which I haven't yet figured out. It's got a hint of spice and tonnes of flavour!

I went here back in December for a small office holiday dinner. All I have to say is if you love Malaysian food then give Penang a try... ~The food is really great! ~They have the best calamari (seriously delicious). I had the Calamari Appetizer...it was so good I ordered it twice...I also had the pineapple fried rice which was also delicious.

My girlfriend and I frequent this place for many reasons: the portions are large (we share the sesame chicken); the staff is extremely friendly; the food is served quickly; and there are koi fish to feed in the pond outside! The prices are a little more than what you'd pay at the Town Center food court across the street, but the quality of food is WAY better.

  • Jacob P.

Excellent service, excellent food, clean, in and out in twenty minutes. I ordered the Chicken Pad Thai and a glass of ice water because I had to be somewhere in the next 20 minutes. I walked in sat down ordered upon being greeted at the table. The Pad Thai was so so so good. Go try this place and take your time eating and enjoying. I can't wait to go back and really sample other items, but that Pad Thai will be tough to beat. Love it.

I don't want to repeat exactly what everyone else has said, but it's hard not to complement all the same things. This place is very unassuming, and you'll be ok going in a t-shirt, but it is not low-class. Everything is full service, but generally quick. The staff has always been courteous and willing to put up with our southern language barrier ;). The portions are generous; if you pair a single entree with an appetizer, it is enough for most couples. Everything I have had was good, even my wife's plates! I will suggest having an idea of what you want before you start browsing the menu, as you can quickly get lost.

My husband and I have been here on several occasions and have loved the food each and every time. We especially love eating there when we are in a hurry because the service is incredibly quick and attentive. We've had a variety of dishes and they have all been great (duck, spring rolls, soup, dessert). You won't be sorry!

My brother was craving spicy food, so I was looking up Thai places when I came across Penang. I couldn't remember the last time I had Malaysian food. In fact, I don't think I've ever been to a Malaysian restaurant! I know! How ignorant and uncultured of me! Anyway, we get to this restaurant, and it's totally different from what we expected. The decorations are very aesthetically pleasing without being pretentious. The restaurant is divided nicely. They have seatings under a hut-like structure, then another section has a large mural, and there's an open area with booth-like seats and big, round tables. My mom, brother, and I ordered 3 pretty different dishes: stir fried noodles, seafood noodles in spicy shrimp broth, and curry chicken. They were all very delicious!! And the portions were just right. The desserts- pancake thing and fried bananas- were also fantastic! Everything was just so yummy! And the service? Awesome. Our waitress made us feel so at home, as if we were regulars. The best part was an elderly Malaysian lady wearing an interesting outfit just hanging around near the entrance, looking around the restaurant with a pleased face. Maybe the owner's mother/in-law from Malaysia? She was selling boxes of homemade dessert pineapple cookie things for really cheap, so we got some to-go... and yep, they were delicious. Need to go back soon!

My fiance and I love coming here. It's one of our "go-to" restaurants. The staff is very friendly and accommodating and the food is delicious! You have to try their Roti Canai appetizer. You won't regret it! A main course favorite of ours is the Beef or Chicken RenDANG it's good! ;) And for dessert, I recommend their Pulut Hitam... it's this amazing bowl of black rice and coconut milk goodness. DO IT!

Great place and love to come back here almost monthly for the coconut shrimp and the other specialties. Never had a bad meal and the service has been always a friendly family that really works well together. Great place to go also for to go - paid for a large event at my house and all the apps were first rate and fresh and got a ton of compliments.

Checked in late at the Comfort Inn and the whole gang was already starving for good food!... I must say this was a delight! Clean restrooms :) yep! If I have little kids, this matters! ... The food was delicious ..no complaints from my picky eaters...even asked for extra rice:) hubby got this curry goat ( forgot the exact name) it was soooo GOOD! The noodles /lomen have just enough flavor ,not too salty :) service was very friendly & attentive ...and the vibe is just ...calm & positive and we love that :) so THANK YOU for a lovely family dinner !

This is a great eatery. Don t make a mistake about the food served here. It is not Thai it is Malaysian which has a Thai likeness but much more extensive flavors. The menu is large and takes time to look over. All food is very Malaysian. Awesome flavors. The staff is very attentive and prices very reasonable. Food served very quickly. I am not from here but will always stop for a meal or takeaway when I pass by.

Really interesting decor here. The inside of the restaurant is kind of set up with little "huts" or awnings with tables underneath. There's another section with a mural that appears to be the sea. Anyway, the food here is great. The PRAWN MEE here is delicious! I think it might be better than other Penang restaurants I have been to. Has a lot of flavor, and the broth has an excellent shrimpy taste. Definitely worth a try!

Hands down the best Malaysian cuisine around. They do Thai/Indian fusion to perfection! The food is equal or better than anything you would have in a very high end restaurant in LA or NY. The service is awesome! The food is worth every dollar they charge and the food is amazing. The prices can add up very quickly here but I have never left thinking I over paid for what I received. Normally it is a RED flag when you walk into a restaurant that has 100 items on the menu. Not here! The food/service/quality control is under the watchful eye of the elder parents. They do not let anything get out to the floor that does not meet their high standards! And I'm assuming by the quality of flavor that all the recipes are their own. The Lamb shank, any fried noddle dish, Curry, Calamari, Fried whole fish dishes are all to perfection! Try everything on the menu. Like I said, everything is perfection here. Be adventurous and try the many levels of spice! Everything to very mild to Thai hot! Wash it down with a tasty Thai beer or Thai tea.

Was craving something Asian at lunch so I stopped by to have a quick lunch. Props for prompt and friendly service. Three stars is just the perfect description, everything was A-OK. I got the stir fry mango chicken. Nice flavor, but not enough to order again when there are so many other favorites I have in the genre.

Finally, finally, we've tried Penang. I've seen that it's gotten pretty solid reviews over the past, but I'm always weary about Southeast Asian restaurants, as some just don't fit my tastes. So, finally, we decided to give it a try. We walked in on a Wednesday night and it was pretty dead inside. There were maybe 10 other customers, but it was a week night so maybe that was a big factor. We were seated immediately after we walked in and were seated where there were a couple of other groups. Probably makes it easier on the servers to have all patrons in the same general area. We started out with a couple of waters and then started to peruse through the pretty extensive menu. Penang is one of the provinces of Malaysia and their culinary focus is a bit of a mix of Indian, Chinese, and Thai influences. That being said, their focus was primarily in Malay, Thai, with a little bit of Chinese favorites thrown onto the menu. There are pictures, which normally is a bad sign of a restaurant, but I suppose because there are so many different types of food (mostly foreign to Americans) that it can be a bit helpful. Our waitress was very friendly despite her broken English. That goes a long way when it's overt that English isn't your first language. We decided to try some Roti Prata (($2.95) a fried flour-based pancake that is cooked over a flat grill) since that was typical of the Penang province. It came with a curry dipping sauce that had a couple of potato chunks and chicken chunks in it. It was very different, but very flavorful in itself. The Roti tastes a bit fried, but the red curry sauce was very flavorful and tasty. Kind of hard to describe other then the taste of curry. For dinner, I decided to go with a Spicy Basil Chicken ($12.95) with steamed rice. You have a choice of spiciness from anywhere from a 1 to 10 (10 being the hottest) and 3 being how they'll usually serve it. I tried a 5 since I like spicy and am glad that I didn't go any higher or my nose would have been running for the duration of the meal. My wife had the Pad Thai ($8.45). Mine was great! It was just the right amount of spiciness and the vegetables included baby corn, red peppers, green peppers, onions, 2 types of mushrooms, and broccoli. The chicken was sliced, but didn't taste overly stringy or cheap in nature basically. I was kind of stuffed from helping to eat the Roti, so I ended up only eating about 1/2 of my meal and took the rest of it home for leftovers. Oh..and not to forget about the decor...but in a word...strange. The building is shaped like a giant box and there is some sort of Ship theme going on inside. We were kind of sitting inside the ship and you could see the front of the ship in the front and there was a wheel to steer it. It seemed really out-dated, but the food was what we really came here for. Oh and outside, they had a koi pond, which was kind of neat. Normally there's food that you can feed them since they're very friendly fish. At the end of the meal, we were given fortune cookies and sent on our merry way. Overall, the service was quick and very friendly. The food was great. My big comparison in the Marietta area would be Lemongrass, but for the proximity from our home, it's worth paying a couple of dollars more for a comparable tasty meal. Penang....we will be back!

So, so many things on the menu I didn't know where to start first. I like Thai as much as the next person but I wasn't in the mood on a Saturday afternoon to try out "Deep Fried Squid Balls" as my Appetizer. My girlfriend and I wanted to get an appetizer but ended up glad we didn't since our main dishes were so large there would have been no way we could have eaten it all. I ended up getting the Crispy Malaysian Pork with steamed rice. The pork was slightly sweet with a tangy taste & was a pretty decent choice I think. My girlfriend had the Pad Thai, she wasn't extremely impressed & said she had had better but it wasn't bad. Her son had sesame Chicken & for someone that usually eats nothing more than chicken nuggets he actually ate it and liked it. I wasn't totally blown away by the staff as everyone else has been. They were extremely helpful but pretty slow, once we had our order I never got a refill on my drink. It was pretty decent as far as the food goes but the atmosphere leaves something to be desired. If you take a look at the website it shows the: NYC, Boston and Philadelphia locations but not Kennesaw. The NYC location looks really nice. If you're in the area and want authentic Malaysian food this might be your spot.

Super yummy! Doesn't look like much from the outside, but the wait staff is fantastic and they get your food out to you super fast. Everything we have tried so far has been delicious! Good prices too!! Love the Roti Canai, and you cant beat $3 for an appetizer :)

great service and the food was ready super quickly. i ordered the basil tofu, and it was good, but i was expecting a party in my mouth. maybe i should try other items.

I haven't ate here often, but a friend and I went to this restaurant right before a movie. The service was good and the food was delivered promptly to the table. The roti appetizer that we shared was a bit spicy, but we both liked it. The main dishes were also good. I had the beef and American broccoli in a brown sauce. They have Malaysian, Thai and even some Chinese dishes on the menu, so they variety is also there. Recommended, if you are in the Buford Highway area.

Stopped in with the roomie and T one night. We were seated in one section of the restaurant, noticed most of the people were being placed around us, then we realized we were sitting in a "boat". Haha it was cute! The menu is VERY extensive and I didn't know where to start. It's mostly Thai food with a couple of pages worth of Malaysian options. The food was pretty good, but not spicy enough for any of us, so we requested for some hot sauce. BOY WAS IT HOT, but oh so good! Service was top notch -- very friendly, talkative, and personable waiters. Only downside was the price. It was a bit pricey for the amount of food you're given. I'd expect the price/food ratio at a restaurant in Atlanta, maybe, but not Kennesaw.

Whenever I have read past reviews and then I subsequently drive past this place, I'm always like, "really?!?" Now that I experienced it, I get why. As kitsch as it may be on the inside - people like it. Meeee too. So, we experimented this Wednesday and gave it a go. At about 6:00 it was nearly empty. The service here is super friendly and attentive! We started off with the roti canai. Interesting, but the dipping sauce it is served with is mmm mmm good. So we haven't really eaten Malaysian food before and we went the wimpy way out and ordered Thai. Husband got the spicy basil chicken at a level 5 spicy. I don't really like that dish, but gave it a little taste and if I liked basil, I would have eaten a whole lot more of it. I got Pad Thai with chicken (I don't do shrimp) and really liked it! Good spices, noodles and sprouts. It is a little pricey. I think it came to about $30 for two people, which I guess isn't the worst thing in the world. Oh, the last thing to mention is the decor. Very amusing. Its supposed to be like being in a boat. You don't notice right away, but we got a little chuckle when we realized it. There's also a koi pond near the entrance, which is always fun. I'll be back, and next time because it was so good, I fully plan on being a little more adventurous.

Like a modern day Clark griswald, I stopped simply for the large decorative cow out front and koi pond. The food is pretty good, the menu is pretty expansive. My fiancée has a restricted diet and they were able to cook to order without salt, oil etc. Good customer service.

Friendly service. The Thai Basil chicken was very delicious and not to spicy. My only complaint was they did not have lemon for my sweet tea but that is not enough to subtract a star. Recommend to anyone who loves Thai cuisine.

DO NOT EAT HERE!! I ordered Thai basil chicken and I didn't even taste any hint of basil. The boyfriend ordered Thai chicken...disgusting. The chicken was awful. I really hoping I don't get I'll. The decor is just as hideous as the "food". I wouldn't even feed this crap to my dog. I gave it one star for the sweet tea.

There are a lot of great things to say about Penang Malaysian... 1) The Customer Service is outstanding..It is true what previous posters have mentioned...they remember you and your likes. 2) Roti Canai App- Indian Style Pancake with a delicious sauce with a potato and chicken...I use the sauce to pour on rice also. 3) Malaysian 2 Flavor Chicken-Half Fried Chicken (Crispy) and Half with sweet and sour.....My Favorite!! 4) Tom Yum-Seafood Lemongrass Soup......Was my choice during the Winter.. This place is authentic. I often see large tables with big families dining here.... This is a must go to spot if you are hanging around Kennesaw..

I had really high hopes for this. Decor was fantastic. Ripening persimmons on the bushes out front. I love good adherence to theme. Maybe I need to come back for dinner. Lunch was clearly aimed for simplicity and speed of service. I want to want to come back again for a better lunch, but doubt I ever will.

Pretty good food, my husband eats there at least once a week for lunch. My favorite part is that the food comes out really quickly, I took away a star because there's not many choices for kids to eat.

cant give a full review since ive only been there once and there was just too much on the menu to choose from but the small amount that i did sample was just ok. they seem to have a lot of accolades so im sure other items on the menu must be a hit. but from what i did try nothing seemed to stand out. the setting itself is pretty nice and has a coastal feel to it

    (3)
  • Cody S.

This is a chain so it's difficult for me to find it decent, BUT... The lunch menu is cheap, the staff is good, and the dishes are good (especially considering Kennesaw has NO decent restaurants). If you have to be on that hellhole Barrett Pkwy, its worth stopping in for. However, the menu is too large for what this place can do. I would stick to the basics of Thai/Malay food (Curries, rice noodles (but not so great noodle bowls), etc.)

    (3)
  • Mike P.

The dishes we had wer just OK. BUT i am willing to go back because I think we just didn't order correctly. All the dishes are unique and don't have that basic asian flavor. So if you are looking for a few different things to excite your taste buds this place is worth a try.

My wife and I just moved to the area and we thought we'd try this place out on a whim. We are VERY glad that we did. The menu was extremely varied and everything we ordered was excellent. The restaurant was clean and welcoming. What really made this place shine for me was the staff. Incredibly attentive, very nice, excellent recommendations. Great food, awesome service, decent prices....yes I will definitely be coming back here.

One of the most authentic thai places that I have eaten at. Some of the menu appears to be maylasian but some of it is also mixed with Korean. It's a great place to eat lunch. The service was quick and they were very responsive. I recommend coming early. There are not many seats. I had the calamari which tastes the way a fresh seafood should taste. A bit spicky but it was a smash hit. Flavored with 5 asian spice which contains MSG so you have to belive that their is other hints of MSG in the food. It's great but avoid the water since it's sink water and tastes like a hose. Again come before the lunch rush or dinner rush and you will get the best service and freshest meal.

I've seen this place for years but have never went to Penang until a month ago. Now I've been there three times and everything has been great on those visits. The service is attentive, and the food is fantastic. It's really a gem planted in the middle of a ton of mediocre chain restaurants. The first time I had the chicken Rendang, and a Malaysian curry noodle laksa. The Rendang was very flavorful with just the right amount of spice and the laksa had fresh vegetables and seafood in a flavorful broth with thick noodles. The thing that struck me the most was the freshness of everything. The shrimp were perfectly cooked which to me is a sign of quality. So many places have rubbery, over cooked shrimp but not here. On my second trip I had the Tom Yung soup and some vegetables. Same quality, freshness and service. My latest trip I had the Tom Yung soup and Lamb Rendang. Same quality, freshness and service. Well worth the trip from Acworth to this gem.

This place is great!! I'm a major foodie, with a discerning palate. The food here is SO Fresh and the fusion of different sauces are fabulous. I literally salivate thinking about the next visit to Penang.... In simple terms, Yummy! The staff are friendly and aim to please. .... Just go! :)

Love this place... Have been going here for many years (12?). The flat bread is sooo good, love dipping it in the curry. Very good calamari. The decor is odd, but I love the sea mural painting in one of the sections- I always ask to sit there!:)

Food is really good. Place and service is nice as well :) the curry was good and they serve this bread that i really like. it can be overlooked sometimes due to the abundance of restaurant in this area. But if u ever wanted to try a good place to check out malaysian dishes then this is a nice place to start.

AWESOME Malaysian food!!! Try their "Roti Kanai" and "Mango Chicken". You won't regret. Oh, and also their "Fried Ice-cream". I believe they have other chains in Edison, NJ and Boston, MA and I've been to both of them and they are as good as this one too.

Great place to go for lunch after a hangover. Jasmine tea is provided to help, and the food is decent. There is way too many choices on the menu but when you finally narrow it down, i've not had a terrible disappointment yet.

Went here on a whim and I ended up really liking the place!!! It seemed like a small family run restaurant and I liked the ambiance. The food comes out quickly and it was pretty dang good! I had the Golden Sesame Chicken and it was honestly some of the best Sesame chicken I have ever had. She had the Mango chicken and that was good if not a little tangy on the palate. We went for the lunch specials and it ended up costing us under $18 for two of us so not bad for the price at all. I want to go back and try more!!!

Penang is as close as it gets to crack in curry form. Every dish I've had there is excellent, but I always return to the red curry. They don't just serve it with meat and rice like so many places, but with strips of eggplant and bell peppers. It is always served by a quiet and smiling server and usually the same one. The turnover is very low there. The curry dish is very filling and fulfilling but I have a hard time leaving without sampling (okay, woofing down) the black rice & coconut milk dessert. If I'm feeling especially care free about weight gain, I add a scoop of coconut ice cream. This beats Chili's Molten Lava Cake any day, and for that to come from a chocolate addict, well, that's saying a lot. It took me years to try this place. I blame the statue of a cow out front and the fact that this restaurant is located in front of a ---ick--- mall. But a friend took me there and showed me the light. Once inside, the atmosphere surprised me. I've been to too many open plan, dark wood Asian restaurants to expect tiki huts, beach murals, and intimate seating including booths. Every time I leave Penang, I am so full, I can barely get my seat belt on. I always swear that this is the last time I will order the black sticky rice.

Delicious Food, Great Service, Portion Sizes *great for leftovers!! Vegetable curry was amazing (cabbage, broccoli, eggplant, green beans, tofu, tomatoes) perfectly seasoned with just a hint of coconut milk so it was not overly sweet. Panang Popia - Spring roll with jicama, slightly sweet and very fresh. Desert was cendol - green pea flour strips with sweet red bean and topped with shaved ice and coconut milk - Super Tasty!! Also cannot say enough about staff, very ATTENTIVE!!! Never had a glass less than half empty and they were very pleasant and smiling.

I really love the restaurant. This would be a five star review but four problems: 1. No WiFi 2. No fountain drinks. It's not acceptable in 2011 to have cans only and not free refills. 3. No splenda. All they have is sweet / low. Nasty. 4. Website is insufficient as it lists a NY location.

The wait staff were all extremely friendly and the food was wonderful! The three of us had Pad Thai, Thai Basil Noodle and the Kari Mee Noodle soup. All of it was wonderful! We topped it off with the Pilut Hitam ( black sticky rice with coconut milk) - yum! Well worth going to - the portions are large enough to share

The food and service was great! We came here on New Years Eve with some friends and we all enjoyed our dinner. Lot's of different food was ordered and everyone had good things to say. The food came out quick and the servers were very attentive. There were also a number of different vegetarian options with was a huge plus! I would definitely come here again.

Not easily noticeable from the main road, I finally got adventurous and turned into this place one day before a movie. The inside reminded me of a seafood house, but immediately the host greeted me with a smile and a sincere hello. The server I had the first time was very attentive, and gave me suggestions to their rather large menu. However, when I saw the salt & pepper shrimp, I immediately knew what I wanted. The item was served on a clean white plate, and the shrimp were still very hot and not dry (so it didn't sit in the window forever) ad the service would ask me if I needed anything periodically during the meal. The dish I ordered seemed a bit pricey ($16 if I remember?) but the taste was well worth this. Upon my return visits, I ended up with the same waiter, and he remembered what I had the last time (even after a 3 month hiatus) and asked me if that's what I wanted before I even sat down. Nutshell: Food: Wonderfully seasoned Service: One of the best in the area Visibility: Somewhat hidden from Barrett pkwy, but easily found (across from where Rio Bravo used to be... but is now an Italian restaurant/Starbucks) $$$: A bit pricey, but well worth it

Food was decent, if you excuse the fact that they messed up both orders at my table. The service was not so great, from bringing the wrong drink to refusing to replate an order of pad thai that was requested without peanuts, but came with them. Not at all accommodating.

  • Shylee S.

The wait staff is supurb remembering menu preferences even when it's been some time since the last visit. The staff is always friendly and consistant. The food is also consistantly good and quite fresh. They cook to order so if there is something you would like to change or adjust (such as the spice level as another Yelper mentioned) just ask! They have also provided me with some vegetarian adaptations of menu items without skipping a beat.

My first time! The Pad Thai was just the right amount of spiciness - medium. The Clay Pot Noodle Soup is very yummy too. Service was very attentive and the food came out fast. I was there around 1:30 pm on a Saturday.

You don't get much more authentic than this place. Most restaurants claim to serve Asian food. This place really does. When I saw whole fish heads on the menu, I knew I was in for an adventure. Aanal P's review is pretty dead on here.

  • Orrin A.

My wife and I took the 3 kids and had a wonderful time. Food: In a word, impressive. All of our dishes were executed quite well. All the meat was tender and the veggies were snappy and fresh. I had a rich beef and vegetable curry which will provide me a total of 3 servings. My wife had a beef and ginger dish which was fantastic. The kids enjoyed deep fried spare ribs and sweet and sour chicken. I'm not crazy about sweet and sour chicken, but was amazed at how light and tender the chicken was...not at all greasy. Service: very friendly Ambience: very casual...this is not a place to "see and be seen." The walls are covered with cheesy murals of Asian island beach scenes. Cute, but not at all trendy. Bottom line, this is a place to go for the excellent cuisine. The most important endorsement I can give is that we definitely plan and returning soon. The only problem I encountered was the dazzling array of menu options. You will find all the standard Thai and Malaysian fare which Americans are used to, plus a number of exotic dishes ranging from chicken feet to curried fishhead stew! There is something for everyone here. (Don't construe 4 stars as implying anything negative about this place...I would only grant 5 stars to a nearly divine dining experience.)

My wife and I liked this place enough to eat here twice in a row. The menu is VERY extensive, and quite good. The prices are average, not especially cheap. The service is VERY high-grade. The desserts are impressive, especially the black sticky mango goodness and the green pea flour strip stuff with shaved ice. All of the Thai-type curries we've had here have been great.

Love this restaurant. Food, staff and desserts are delicious. Staff is knowledgable and attentive. The mixed Sate is a must try appetizers. I love the vegetable curry pot with roti and the Pad Thai. A local favorite of ours.

So after watching Anthony Bordain on the travel channel devouring whole fried fish slathered in curry and wrapped in a banana leaf I instantly had a hankering for some...(yes that goes along the same lines are don't watch food network when you are starving!!) Like Aanal mentioned we had like 3 servers.. weird. mmm but they were all so nice and funny (especially our "main waiter" he cracked me up!!!) I had been here before but when dinning in a large group (they were excellent and even gave complementary appetizers) it's hard to discern the true level of service/food etc.. Okay! So to the food.....Roti Canai..rotti with a spicy curry dipping sauce, Whole fried fish in a Thai chili sauce ( I'll be having dreams about you fishy!), Green curry, mango ice cream, and pulut hitam ( black sticky rice with coconut milk), and also the oyster omelet (not sure what it's called but it was basically egg with oysters in it)-was pretty good. I love their extensive menu with influences from Malaysia and Thailand, and with such dishes from congee to curried fish head you are sure to find something amazing and interesting! Oh just be aware that they do tone down the spices for the typical American palate ( I heard our waiter saying that to another couple).. so if you want spicy...specify!

My palate is speechless.......... I had driven past Penang Malaysian Cuisine a couple times, and thought to finally try them for lunch yesterday. (My dad wanted Chinese.....I thought Malaysian was close enough). The restaurant looked authentic from the outside. There is a pond outside that had some hungry.... but exotic fish in it, and the door which looked like it was made from pure bamboo..... very authentic. When we walked inside, the decor was busy but authentic, and the curry fragrant had me salivating. We sat down and were greeted by a server immediately. And then there was another server.......then there was another server.......so they are very attentive and they were pretty packed for a Sunday afternoon. I was impressed with the service. We started with roti canai, and chicken satay, which was so flavorful. The roti canai was my favorite though......the chicken curry reminded me of the curry we ate back home. (I thought about ordering a big bowl of roti canai and call it lunch.......but I am glad I continued my journey onto other dishes) For the main course, we ordered a whole red snapper fried (yes....the head and eyes and all), chicken rendang, and vegetable curry with tofu. I was most excited about the red snapper, because it is my favorite. The snapper was brought out on a large plate set on banana leaves covered with spicy curry sauce, okra and tomatoes, the vegetable curry with tofu was served in a large glass bowl (the veggies were fresh and crunchy) and the curry soup that accompanied the veggies was very flavorful (it could have been a little spicier, but still yummo!) and the chicken rendang....wow! full of flavor. The first bite of rice and fish curry left me speechless.....and almost in disbelief that this could actually be the best red snapper curry I have ever had in my life........the spices were perfect and the fish was so meaty! I think I am in love............... The veggie curry with tofu was very soupy, and so good....looking at the bowl which was so liquidy, I thought it would be flavorless and watery tasting, but no....yet again i was amazed. The chicken rendang was very flavorful....not my favorite, but pretty tasty. Penang Malaysian Cuisine is my new place of choice for real home cooked meals..........

How did Atlanta get this? This is such good Malaysian food. Start with the Poh Piah and then move to the Nasi Lemak or Hainese Chicken, ending with the Chendol, for an amazing experience.
