Cool menu with lots of European choices. We mostly stuck to German food. This food is not light nor trendy. Mostly heavy, traditional fare. Cool location, but place could use an update. Service was really friendly. Prices reasonable.

I'm not sure how this place stays in business. Firstly, the patio, while it does have a great view, is incredibly cramped. The inside is disgusting. The bathroom was 100 degrees and dirty. The food...just don't. I'm a fairly easy-going person when it comes to dining out, and I wanted to get up and leave. The Brat was a Johnsonville. I can buy those at Kroger. The potato salad was the most disgusting thing I've ever put in my mouth. Truly disappointed. Wanted authentic German. No...just no. Go to the Wendy's.

As always, excited to try a new place and this one did not disappoint. Still with a party of seven we were set quickly outside with lovely weather. The waitress was friendly and very attentive. She informed us that their Reuben is the most popular dish, which made up my mind. This was the best Reuben I have ever tasted! The marinade on the corn beef is awesome, no need for the thousand islands, just the meat, cheese and delicious sauerkraut. It literally does not come with thousand islands. The appetizer was good as well. We tried the Parmesan shrimp crab dip. My boyfriend ordered a platter with sauerkraut and potatoes. My dish was way better.

Good beer selection. My kids shared a pb&j and it was average. My mother in law had the German platter with potato salad, sauerkraut and sausages. She liked it but said it was average German food. The best food of the meal was my French dip, which was good but not amazing. I'd come back here for the beer only.

  • ZARINAH T.

it was okay. I loved the fresh baked chips and apple beer. My waitress was spunky... Despite this, my food wasn't as good as I expected. The view was great the kids and I took a patio seat in the heat... The price was kind of steep; I would go again and try the Ruben, the guy next to me said it was mouth watering.

Never got waited on with my wife and 2 kids, had to walk up to the kitchen and ask for someone to take our order. Nice server took over and was cool. However, German potato salad was not fresh, canned, and the German sausage I got was just a glorified jumbo hotdog, not smoked as per menu description. I know German food and this was not. We watched another table unable to get service as well. Granted they have a great view of the drunk people floating down the river on inner tubes, the food and service was NOT good.

Do not eat here!!! And do not drink the water! Our server was a delight. She did say that potato salad a nd coleslaw were canned and I tried it anyway. Huge mistake!

  • Charlene C.

Stopped by this place because the outdoor seating was very inviting. We ordered pastrami and roast beef sandwiches and a beer each. I have to say, the food was very good! Sandwiches came with coleslaw, chips, and a pickle and I loved it all! The prices are fair and our waitress was very sweet and welcoming! I wish I could remember her name so I could tell her manager how great she was. Definitely recommend :)

One star ONLY so I could post. Food is nasty - store bought rolls and Johnsonville Brats. Menu choice is awful. Stay away u less of course all you want is to drink then go ahead. But for a decent meal no way. Even the Greek salad was awful and the Greek dressing had no flavor at all. And for the $$ Mcdonalds would have been better

  • Steven C.

There are alot of menu choices of different countries. I liked the variety. Their German food is excellent. Its recommended you sit outside because the view is great! The service, in particular our waitress, are so kind and courteous which speaks big in my book. Definitely give this place a shot if you are in Helen!

Stopped here for lunch during Oktoberfest. Had chips and cheese dip and salsa. All were not in house made, which was disappointing. The 3 wurst platter was pretty good!!! Especially the bratwurst.

  • Poorva N.

Awesome location, overlooking the river & even more memorable food. Had the Reuben, one of the best we'hv ever had! Also the Scandinavian Shrimp & Crab salad was spectacular & substantial. Though busy the service was hospitality at its best & to top it all the Erdinger was chilled. Did i mention we were there on a Tuesday & half this town seems closed & we still found this gem buzzing!

Helen is known for it's wonderful "authentic" German cuisine. I would have to say, this place was my biggest disappointment. Thier food selection is clearly processed food. Nothing here seemed fresh. The German potato salad was canned. Hamburgers were lower quality then fast food resturant serve. If I am going to eat out, I don't want anything I could have bought at Walmart. This place claims they serve the best rubin in town. I am a big rubin fan, however I found this sandwich lacking in taste and originallity. Arby's carrys a better rubin. It did have an abundance of oil though. Of all the places there are to choice from in Helen this would be at the bottom of my list. In my opinion, the only reason they still have business is because they are located on the water. If you are looking for good, authentic German food, try others in town.

Best Ruben around and Traci was a Super server. Beautiful river views and sounds! Reasonable prices for Helen. Combination of good food and location makes it one of the best places to eat and drink in Helen!

Cute little cafe by the river. Ordered a bratwurst, and some German chocolate cake. Nice environment and they have a souvenir beer mug!

We were here with my family on a weekend during Oktoberfest. The weather was perfect so the hostess set up a table for us outside. There was no one sitting inside anyways, except two dudes. It was really nice sitting right by the water. Our server was really friendly but I don't remember her name now. She explained the German beers they had on draft and I order the lighter Erdinger. It was a good choice! Then I order the salsa and chips which was nothing very special. For lunch I had the French dip with cheese. It was really good! The meat was really tender and not overly fatty or anything like that. My mom ordered the Reuben and it looked really good. We don't prefer our coleslaw to be so creamy so we weren't fans of that much. Overall, I had a great experience here!

Excellent location with a view of the river and an excellent Reuben sandwich. One of our favorite lunch spots in Helen.

Burger was not fresh hand-made. Obviously frozen and the bun was freezing cold. Like something nought from costco. Nothing special about salad. Again store bought just like the chips. I waited to be seated for about five minutes without seeing a waiter. Okay staff but the food is not worth those prices. I guess you are paying for the view of the river

  • Marley C.

Because we ate dinner pretty late, we opted to eat inside. At first, we didn't have a very good impression because we walked into the dining room and waited. It was empty and there was no one to be found to seat us. Finally a waitress popped out of the kitchen to tell us to seat ourselves and she'd get our waitress. A VERY nice server got our drinks and we placed our orders. I ordered the salad with house dressing, my husband had the italian sausage sandwich (he makes sure to tell the waitress that he doesn't want the pickle on the plate and light sauce on sandwich), and my kids ordered a bar-b-q sandwich and the Camel Rider (pita with a lot of different meats. When we got our food and the pickle was on my husbands plate and the juice was all over his chips (which is not world ending but frustrating when you hate pickles and ask specifically not for any). He asked for new chips and was given a ton. Unfortunately, no one in our party liked them. They were stale tasting. Also my husband's did not have light sauce. The salad was good but something I could have gotten in any restaurant anywhere. The menu said it had the finest ham and cheeses...well, it the cheese was shredded and straight out of a bag and the ham looked like deli ham. The dressing on the salad was VERY good. The Bar BQ sandwich was good but my son did not like the Camel Rider at all. He felt it was greasy and he ate none of it. Pros: Friendly staff (once we found someone), homemade honey ranch dressing, the italian sausage was good and so was the Bar B Q. The german potato salad was AMAZING. Cons: Pretty pricey for what we had. Kitchen didn't pay attention to details and I felt it was a fairly generic fair.

Ruben was great! Sat outside with our pup and they even brought us a bowl of water for her. Great German beer! Would go back

I Am torn here, the view is beautiful if you sit outside. however, in the spring and summer, there are too many bugs to do that and it is to hot. so if you sit inside, it is plain and boring. our waitress was un interested in serving us, it showed. and the food was lackluster. the stand out was the cheese plate. everything else seemed to be frozen and out of a can. that said, if you want to come for lunch and sit out side (preferably fall season) id say this is okay, just know, your going to pay a lot for very sub par food. when you could have delicious german food within seconds from you. maybe just come have a beer here outside at night? that seems like it might be fun.

View is great and hearing the water. Customer service was great and we were seated quickly. Food was below average. Hospital food is waaay better than this. I did leave with a smile on my face because the company was great, the weather was ideal .... and it was entertaining using the women's bathroom. I had to position my knees and hips 90 degrees to the Right, over the toilet. They should relocate the toilet paper dispenser higher, instead of at knee level and up against the toilet seat. It was an adventure!

Cafe International's menu reminds me of middle school, in that I had a choice of languages: German, French, Spanish or Latin, similar to having a menu choice of German, French, Spanish or American food here. My boyfriend and I had come to Helen for a day trip, and we arrived just in time for a late lunch. Since we wanted to sit by the river and watch the tubers floating by continually, we had our choice between Cafe International and The Troll Tavern across the bridge. Since my cell service in Helen was non-existent preventing me from consulting Yelp about our choices, we took a chance and chose Cafe International. It was a fine choice judging by the options. We were seated at a round wooden table just a little ways from the edge of the deck overlooking the river and our waitress was very friendly, if a little quick to try and our orders. In short order, my boyfriend decided to get the German wurst platter with bratwurst and sauerbraten, warm potato salad, and red cabbage. I had a harder time making a decision since almost everything (with the exception of one salad on the menu) was a sandwich. Finally, I chose the bbq pork sandwich with chips and a pickle, and we agreed to share. Everything was prepared well and came out quickly (which was quite important by that point, as we were both very hungry). To my pleasant surprise, the pork sandwich was not all bun and little pork, but very substantially filled with pork, which wasn't too heavily sauced either. I also had half of my boyfriend wurst platter, and it was tasty too : the sauerbraten was my favorite of the two sausages and the warm potato salad was definitely different than anything I'd had before. I wasn't a fan of the red cabbage, but oh well - the choice was between that or sauerkraut... In all, the food did its job: it filled us up. It wasn't outstanding, the river watching was probably one of the highlights of the restaurant, but then Helen's not known for its restaurant quality anyway. If and when we go back, I may opt for the Troll Tavern across the river and test out its offerings, but Cafe International certainly deserves at least three stars for its large, ample patio.

This place is great. The food is sooo good. The best Reuben sandwith in the world... Lol . The waitress was so kind. She made the meal taste even more better. Her smile made my day...The sound of the river passing by with the cool breeze... What a wonderful day... Thank you

Review your bill carefully. Two items were up charged by 2$'s. two items were up charged by 1$. And a one dollar sharing fee was given, even though each person ordered one dish each. The waitress quickly corrected the check, but the manager was too busy to come to the table to apologize. An honest mistake, that the manager must have been making all day to a profit, yet too busy to visit my table and apologize.

In town with some friends to celebrate the O'Fest. They arranged lunch here for our group (12+) as they have come here for years. Wait time was long, but what do you expect for a large group in the middle of crazy. We ended up being seating in "the prime tables", right on the water. Scratch the wait time! Everyone raved on the Reuben. So with that, we ordered them. To die for, they really know how to make it. We'll be back...rooms already reserved for next year. :)

My wife and I ate here on our honeymoon. The decor was rather drab inside, but it seemed that most of the guests sat outside. It was too hot and humid for us outside so we decided to dine inside. I ordered a chicken dish covered in cheese and my wife got some fish. The veggies were reheated frozen broccoli Normandy that you could buy in the grocer's freezer. The fish was bland and the chicken like rubber. The cheese was so processed that it tasted like eating wax. Even with this knowledge we decided to try a desert. We got a slice of cheese cake. It was like any cheesecake that you could go to Costco and get for $15 for a whole cake. The waitress finally came to check on us after we sat there for more than an hr. During that time we counted the microwave beeps as the kitchen clearly reheated every meal they were serving. We lost count at over 30. When the waitress finally arrived we voiced our concerns in a civilized manner. She immediately got combative and refused to accommodate us in any way. She wouldn't even get the manager. So we asked for the check and left. When she saw that we did not leave a tip she screamed "Kill the messenger". I can excuse bad food. But her service was terrible. She is the only waitress I have ever not tipped. I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

  • Stacie G.

Not that impressive, especially considering the price. I got the French dip and it was very bland tasting. No love to the food whatsoever and it is not very fresh either. I ordered a side of vegetable medley and it was very gross, unseasoned and undercooked. The appetizer we had was a seafood dip-probably the best thing I had there but still nothing special.

We came here on vacation and the town is so cute and different that we had to try a place to eat. So we chose Cafe International. I had the chicken soup with tortilla chips, this soup was really good and it was perfect for the cold weather in December, especially since we were brave enough to sit outside. I also ordered the ruben which was very good, the bread was a bit soggy so I didn't finish all the bread and the coleslaw was very tasty. We opted to try the German Chocolate Cake, it was good but not enough chocolate for my taste buds. It could have been better. The service was good and the atmosphere was great. xo, kristin nicole

Hallo! To complete our trip to Helen (German inspired town), we had to eat like a German as well! We decided to eat sausages so we chose this place. They serve exquisite sausages! we tried the Knockwurst and Bauernwurst combo meal for around 13-14 dollars. It's so good with pumpernickel bread. We also tried their German cheese and I loved it. We ended up buying more of the sausages from a local store near by. It was a great experience.

Awesome cheese board and red velvet cheesecake! They have a wonderful view of the Chattahoochee River and very nice owners.

Went in 4 my birthday today and it was great. They heard it was my birthday and gave me a free desert. I got the peach cheesecake and it was incredible. Lunch was great and the view is even better. We will always stop in when in Helen! We looked over at the Troll across the river and it was empty. No more Troll for us.

Beer is ice cold and the mustard is hot. The german food was authentic and delicious. We had a great time and our server was solid. We had a great view of the river with peeps tubing down it. Super funny. This is a tourist town and you will pay extra for beer and food. You will also have a good time.

    (5)
  • Kathy H.

Outdoors, nice weather, view of the tubes floating down the river, fair priced plates with decent portions. I went with the Rueben (it's German so I had to) but wished I had gone with the French Dip which looked less greasy. It tasted good even though ti was dripping juices everywhere. If it weren't for the kids, it would have gone really well with a nice Amber Lager. Kids had Cheese burgers and Spaghetti. =) (International cuisine remember) Sandwiches come with a side of ruffles potato chips.

Great...fun place especially during Oktoberfest. Get a Reuben and some beer! Best beer selection in Helen. Watch our interview with the beertender and one of the owners here: pennietour.com/2010/10/2…

  • Jennifer R.

Food horrible and reheated in microwave (I mean how can you mess up bratwurst - by reheating the bun until it's chewy and yucky!). It does offer a great view of the river and fun time watching tubers!

    (2)
  • Caitlin B.

Like everyone else had stated before me, good food, great view and the have a pretty decent beer selection. The prices are a tad on the upper side, but that's expected with any tourist trap, such as Helen.

Dinner Saturday. We got a table on the parking lot, a waitress who apparently had better things to do, and an average meal. It's a tourist town so we considered ourselves lucky!

Great view, great food, nice staff. Stopped by on a hot day and enjoyed eating outside on the river in the shade.

  • Carlos M.

Horrible place food was simply disgusting. The only good thing is the location since you can see the river and people tubing but do not waste your money. I don't know who is in that kitchen but they need a real chef. If you want to eat good food in Helen go to Nacooche Grill.

  • Daniela M.

The sandwhiches are delicious but the service was not great. Waitress was very friendly but took Forever to take Our order and get the check. The rueben really is delicious and so is the pastrami. Yummy.

  • Nicole V.

The food and service was better than the place we ate at next door the day before so I'm adding a star but it doesn't deserve any more than 3 stars due to the Styrofoam plates the food was served on and the fact that fries were not an option for a side. I got an all American burger and it was fine. The bun was fresh. The outdoor seating was popular since it was beautiful out and it extended out over the river. The seats were benches- not very comfortable. Our waitress was sweet but slow.

    (3)
  • Hannah B.

I ordered the cheese plate for an appetizer, and it was very good. It was something different. But I also ordered the Italian sausage. ( bun, mozzarella cheese, marinara, and a sausage). The bun was the same cheap buns you can buy at Quiktrip ( I know because I work there ), and the marinara makes it all soggy. BLAH. But we sat on the porch outside on the river. Great view!

Great Reuben Sandwish. Slow service, Good View. Id return for that sandwich, best time to go Octoberfest.

  • Scott M.

Decent food isn't hard to come by in Helen, and Cafe International is no exception. In fairness, I didn't have a full meal here. Renea and I stopped for a beer on the patio overlooking the river. The food looked good, so we decided to share a brat plate. Very authentic...not the pressed meat we're used to getting from the grocery. It came with a side of German potatoes (very good), kraut (too earthy for me), and brown bread (meh). Service was very good. Even the bus boy asked how we were doing. Gets 4 stars for a nice patio, good brat and potatoes and good service.

This place is definitely one of my favorite dining spots in Helen now. I would definitely suggest the Reuben--the menu claims it to be best in town, but I have to disagree... it is by far one of the best I have EVER had! Their German beers on tap are to die for (My personal fave was their Erdinger Dunkel, a dark hefeweizen.) There is outdoor and indoor seating... Inside is pretty drab, but outside is simply beautiful, nestled right on the Chattahooche. Ask for Tracy... Super awesome service!!

Great family restaurant on the river. The Rueben was outstanding along with the other German food.

  • Elie B.

This place has amazing food. I had a hard time making a decision. I finally had the stack which had more meat than I could keep on the bread. What an amazing sanwitch. I will keep coming back and highly recommoned this resturant.

  • David G.

My wife and I stopped here for lunch during our 20th anniversary trip. The service was prompt and somewhat friendly. We seated outside next to the Chattahoochee River that's runs along side the restaurant. The view nice and the sound of the river was soothing although it was a little cool so if you go during the cooler months take a light jacket or sweater. I ordered the spaghetti with Italian sausage and my wife ordered a French dip with au jus and chips. My spaghetti was descent not great and it lacked much seasoning...nothing that a little salt couldn't cure. My wife had so much roast beef on her sandwich that she to take some of it off and it was a pretty thick cut as well....she was not that impressed...and even states the ones at Arby's tasted better. Despite that the price was good and the location was great...we will probably come back and try some of their other selections.

This is really my only reason for visiting Helen, GA. We love to come during Oktoberfest and drink in the Beer Garten then go down to Cafe International and eat. Their location is perfect by the river, so we always try to get seating outside. But their Reuben Sandwich is AMAZING!! I get a Reuben everywhere I can find one and this one is my all time favorite. I highly recommend eating her. Service is always great too.

  • Christina P.

We wanted to sit inside because it was cold, but the indoors portion reminded me of a run down Mcdonalds. Since ambiance is important to us and the outdoors had beautiful scenery, we decided to freeze and eat outside :D. Not everything on the menu was available, but what we did settle on was delicious! (Ruben and Prime Rib sandwiches)

I was trying to quickly find us a place to eat one night and I briefly read the menu at the entrance. I saw that they featured foods from different regions and thought "Cool!" without ACTUALLY looking at the choices. This place is outdoor seating only (Right? Or did I miss something?) and it's right on the river, so probably a prime people watching place to have cocktails/beer during tubing season. We sat down and they had a DJ/Karaoke man who was very Santa Claus like and enjoyed country music. So, the menu...it's adorable: France - The French Dip (Oui) Italy - Lasagna, Pizza and something else I'm pretty sure didn't originate from Italty Germany - Lots o' options mostly involving the bratwurst. I chose from this country since we were in "Germany in the South" and had some brats and sauerkraut. Brats were ok, sauerkrat wasn't the best I'd ever had, to be honest. Other International Specialities included the Greek Salad and something from Scandanavia, involving seafood. We heard the reuben was the "best in town" so my friend had that and thought it was good. Service was very friendly and pretty quick. This place was great for people watching. We got to watch some ladies break it down on the "dance floor" and were awarded a t-shirt by one of the employees for being the "best dancers." To be fair, they were the ONLY dancers and I hadn't gotten out there yet. :-P

I visited Atlanta and my friend brought me here. It's her favourite restaurant in Germantown. Oh wow, I'm still dreaming about their German potato salad and all its vinegary goodness. I chickened out on the German style foods (I was worried about meat overload) but my sandwich was delicious and I kept eyeing my friend's wiener... which sounds dirtier than I meant it to. It was perfect patio season and we got to watch over the river, seeing all the tubes float by.

Great view, good enough food, bad customer service! Party of 4, seated promptly with great view of the river, our waitress seemed friendly. Told us about specials, we ordered beers from their specials and ordered two fish dips to start with (the only reason we went there in the first place) and 4 other items from the menu. The drinks came out promptly, however, after about 20 mins, our waitress informed us that they have ran out of their fish dip! Bummer! No offer of a complimentary replacement either, so we waited another long 20 mins for our main course. The food is average, we asked our waitress several times for a variety of mustards, yet she only brought us one kind in a bottle, but we later realized that they have their own special house mustard that every other table around us was enjoying! As we were already finished with our meal, we just let that one slide and asked for the check, so here's the real problem and the reason for my generous 2 stars; every item on our bill was up charged by a $1, the beers on special were charged regular price and a $1 charged for sharing even though we had ordered 4 items and yes we all shared but doesn't everyone! The waitress agreed that the person who printed the bill had made a mistake which happened to be the manager! However, the manager was too busy to come to our table and apologize and when approached by my friend, she seemed arrogant and defensive, saying it was an honest mistake! I'm not so sure about that, if you are a manger of a place and all you are doing all day is processing people's bills, you should be familiar with prices and an honest mistake can be on one or two items not on every single item on the bill! No discounts offered either, very disappointing! So be very careful and double check everything on your bill!

This place is disappointing. The view is great. The food is terrible. Tastes prepackaged and frozen. Keep walk g if your looking for a good meal.
