Very cute and small place, great to grab drinks after work. Their cocktails were delicious. They just changed their menu to a more tapas style and I have to say I wasn't impressed. While prices were good, it was mainly meat and a lot of it was over-salted, particularly the meatballs. I will have to say the lamb was so tender and delicious and I don't typically eat lamb. The braised beef and pork buns were also good. I was excited to try this place out but I think the menu fell short.

Ok...I'm giving this a terrible rating ENTIRELY for the service. The drinks and atmosphere make it non-worthy of a one star rating. The bartenders deserve a negative rating. Yes...we get it...you wear denim and can stir liquids together. Congrats. Your attitudes are terrible and you have ZERO customer focus. I will never go here again because of the pompous bartenders.

To judge this place on its immediate opening, I'd say we've got a good thing here with Paper Plane. I read an article that explained the Paper Plane/ Victory Sandwich Bar (which I love) dynamic as PP being a great first date spot and VSB being that late night place you end up at on the second date. That sounds about right to me. PP is cozy and has a kind of exclusive feel to it. Not so over-the-top as, say, Prohibition, but enough that one would get the sense of being just a little off the main path. Between my wife and me, we had three cocktails, two entrees, and a dessert. All three cocktails: Anchor's Aweigh, Writer's Block, and Biggie Snugs were delicious. In particular, I really enjoyed the Writer's Block which touches your tongue with a smooth bourbony taste right away, then cascades into a much more encompassing coffee flavor immediately afterward. My wife had the Trout and liked it, though I didn't get specifics. I had the braised short rib and it was AMAZING! The tenderness of the rib meat was spot on and the mix of the onions on top with the white bean puree underneath was perfectly complimentary and absolutely mouth-watering. For dessert we shared the cardamom chocolate cake, which was essentially a souffle, and we both agreed it was divine. My only complaint, and believe me this is minor, is that the portions were just a tad small. Not nearly as criminally minuscule as the portions at KR Steakbar (which also rings in at a much higher price), but still juuuuust this side of completely filling. But, ya know, if you're still that hungry and want to top off with something a bit less expensive, you can always pop over to Victory Sandwich Bar for a Castro or Han Cholo ;-) To finish off this review, I'll say that the entire staff was very kind and attentive, and all of them seemed to be sporting a chic retro style. Good work. I'll definitely be coming back again soon.

Don't come here because I want this place to myself. However, if you can find it behind either of its two non-descript entry points, you're going to find a really fun place for drinks and/or dinner. It's tiny and crowded and very loud, so if you don't like any of those attributes, then you won't like it here. However, if you're up for a fun time (not Buckhead fun circa 2000, but mature Decatur fun), then you'll love it. The drinks are all great and the food is fantastic as well. The portions are surprisingly small given their full prices, but it's all worth it.

Really cool spot. Very small joint. Only 5 tables. The cocktails are really great and fun. The food was very high quality and perfectly prepared. Creative. Small portions. Chef loves butter and salt. Brussel sprouts and the lamb were my favorites but there was not a bad dish on the table and we ordered one of everything.

One of the best meals I have ever had. Great service. Great bar program. This place is new, but it will be on of Atlanta's best by the end of the year.

We went in for drinks, appetizers and deserts. It was just what we were looking for. The ambiance is just right. Drinks were spot on. We all ordered sides and desserts. Everything was great! I'll be back when a small cozy spot is needed.

Our early Saturday night dinner at Paper Plane got off to a slightly rough start, but was thoroughly redeemed by great cocktails and terrific food. The hostess first offered to seat us at the dark, noisy bar. When I asked if any of the open outdoor tables were available, she had a brief discussion with another staff member; there was same reluctance to allow our party of two to take one of the small 4-tops, but they did. We each ordered from the creative list of cocktails. Mine refreshing gin-lime-Campari concoction came out quickly, but there was an extremely long delta before my husband's rye-based drink was delivered. He said it was almost worth the wait. Our biggest irritation, though, wasn't the staff's fault. A woman (a customer) stepped out of the bar area to take a phone call in the outdoor alley area and stood uncomfortably close to our table while conducting a ridiculously long conversation. I don't know how the waitstaff could have tactfully addressed the situation, but they did their best to ignore her and work around her as she stood chatting away obliviously in the crowded seating area. Fortunately, she finished up around the time our first courses arrived. And after a taste of the heavenly, rich, meaty, salty bone marrow, nothing else mattered. The beef tartare was perfect, too, and both were served with delicious buttery toast. We shared a striped bass entree, nicely crusted and paired with bright bites of turnip, beet, grapefruit and peas. We also ordered a side of Brussels sprouts. It was good that the waitress warned us that they were spicy. I liked the distinctive flavors of fish sauce and oyster sauce, but could only eat a few because of the aggressive heat from Thai chilies. My husband, whose philosophy is the hotter the better, was delighted to finish them. All in all, Paper Plane was a wonderful place to celebrate the return of outdoor dining season with date night drinks and dinner.

My husband would say this is really cool!!! It's about 30 feet of stainless steel bar and maybe five large booths. Great vibes! Watching the bartender work is a treat. Delicious Chicken dinner with salad followed by Lemon Meyer ice cream! Will be back-no doubt...

Paul Calvert, the best mixologist in Atlanta, accompanied by chefs Melissa Allen and Josh Sample have built a restaurant that exceeds all in Atlanta. Paper Plane hits your sweet spot at the end of your day. Very impressive for a date or dinner with friends. It's beautifully comfy yet regal then cozy. The staff adheres to your every whim. It's so damn great that you will find yourself discussing and sharing your experience of your favorite cocktail or dish with the stranger next to you. The drinks are liquid porn and the small plates make your eyes roll into the back of your head. Who could ask for more?

Little snooty, but that's part of its charm. Last time I was there, they were out of all their food? Great cocktails. Stop asking me if I know what Mezcal is.

Hidden gem! Sat at the bar and had the octopus and beet salad as an appetizer, smoked chicken as main. All were superb. I really liked the music they played too. Was "shazaming" non stop. Made me want to stay a while and have more vino. Two thumbs up!

The atmosphere and drinks are awesome. If I'd stopped there, I'd give this 5 stars! Trouble is, the food is not worth the price (and I cheerfully drop $$$ on meals far too often, so base this on a lot of comparison eating!) The dishes are beautifully plated but the portions are far to small and while good, not spectacular. Have a drink, maybe have an app, but go elsewhere for dinner.

Drinks and ambiance was good; however, the food and service were okay. Gratin was under cooked and didn't have any flavor. The chocolate cake I could have been made in microwave. Reduce price of everything on the menu by $3, and you will get what you paid for.

Memorable, interesting dining experience -- and for shockingly reasonable price! We owed another couple a night out on the town (they treated us last time). Being in that this couple is very well-eaten around Atlanta, I was fretting over where to take them. We agreed on Paper Plane. We luckily arrived just as another table was getting up from one of the four (yes, only four if my memory serves me correctly) tables in this quaint space. (BTW, if you don't know to look for the unmarked door down the alley by Victory Sandwich shop, you'll easily overlook this place.) Our service was hip and attentive but not overly attentive. As each dish was presented, the waitress took the time to name each ingredient and how the dish was prepared. Obviously some good training went into the team at Paper Plane. Standout dishes included the black bass ceviche, the french onion soup (a creamy take on it - divine), pork belly and lamb rack. Each dish had an interesting combination of flavors -- nothing bland or boring at this place. Ambiance is a little loud, but I didn't mind it. Space a little cramped, but in my mind that adds to the allure. Possibly the best part of of this experience was the final bill. We had 8 or 9 small plates among the four of us, plus three cocktails and two beers. Total was $130 plus tip. Incredible bang for the buck for the interesting-ness of the food, top notch service, etc. I wouldn't say we left "stuffed" but we all definitely had plenty to eat and didn't want for more. We will DEFINITELY be back.

This might just be my new favorite spot for cocktails in Decatur. AND the food blew me away. I mean really. The beets were a standout for me, taking me on a flavor and texture roller coaster ride that I will gladly line up for again and again. Each bite oscillated between the pucker and acidity of sour pickled crunchy beets to the mellow earthy sweetness of roasted beets, topped with creamy goat cheese and little crunchy rye bits of joy. I've been dreaming of those beets every day since our visit. For my main, I had the lamb, which also featured a symphony of flavors: rich lamb with sweet cherry mingled with pickled mushrooms and rich buttery nutty pistachio ravioli. Outta the park! My one complaint is that I could have used a steak knife rather than the butter knife delivered. Finally the cocktails. I have been a long time fan and addict of Miles' creative concoctions and infusions over at Leon's, but I absolutely loved the stealthy simple cocktail craftsmanship happening here at Paper Plane. My favorite was the Best of the Vest, a beer cocktail which mingled and amplified my favorite hoppy beer flavors with amplified citrus bitterness in a smooth alcoholic cocktail format. Love! I will be back very soon.

Great atmosphere, good service, but skip the food. Seriously, I don't understand the rave reviews. The food isn't exactly bad, but it isn't that good either. Still, this is a good place to get a drink.

Very cool atmosphere. They are definitely a "speak-easy" type place that doesn't advertise, small space, with mixologists that make ridiculously good drinks. It gets super crowded so go early if it is a weekend! But definitely a must try when in Decatur.

  • Jennifer L.

Checked this place out last night. The space is small, but provides a great atmosphere, very 60's. They do have a very interesting cocktail menu, we enjoyed the biggie snugs and a gin cocktail I think was called Heyward West? We also shared several small plates with our favorites being the Lamb and the beet dishes. I would recommend this place for a great spot to get a cocktail or two and enjoy a small plate.

If you're in Decatur and looking for a chill spot to spend an evening, Paper Plane is it! They have really cute outdoor seating in a little alleyway draped with hanging lights, some potted herbs and just enough sunlight and shade to keep you comfortable but let you enjoy the summer evening. For libations, we ordered the Brighton Punch and the drink special that evening. Brighton punch did indeed pack a punch. It was flavorful, light on the tongue, strong on the kick. I only needed one with my entire meal. My husband enjoyed an Emergency Drinking Beer and a Nomader Weisse. Both come highly recommended. The food we did order came out quickly and was delicious. We had fried balls of cheese, chicken and crab, a vegetable tartare, and a charcuterie board. All were delicious. I particularly enjoyed the fatty duck prosciutto. We particularly appreciated the server with us that night that explained every dish, was well versed in the food and drink and really made some good recommendations! This is a great place for a date or an intimate gathering of friends! I'll be back!

The BF and I came here on our second date and the drinks were awesome. IT's very dark inside so we sat outside which made for great conversation. We had the burgers. TASTY!!! I've heard this place is now closed... I would have gone back... :(

I bookmarked it and my most favorite road dog is in town which gave me opportunity to hit my bookmarks. Fortunately I made it, but it was just in time for its pending closure. I was excited to try somewhere new. The anticipation of finding it. From the outside I was not entirely sure where the entrance was. Walking down a side alley to find a door. A door that invited members and non members alike. Again I was excited. Entering Paper Plane made me excited. I felt as if I was in a place only a few would have the privilege of going. I felt when I sat down, magic would happen and that magic would be based on what my appetite of mystery was made of. We had drinks. That's all that was available. The food menu.... no more. Still it was nice, the drinks very nice. The gentleman next to me, with his notebook and writing in ink, some scratching of the words, some lines for a list... It felt very comforting. Like we all had a story to tell... My story was in a very delightful Bourbon drink. Toronto it was called. Should I dream of a trip up north? My company... His story in a tequila drink... It was nice... I'm happy I made it. It was until another establishment, one with food, explained Paper Plane will soon cease to exist. It felt... Sad for a moment... For a moment it felt... Familiar... Felt like a place I wanted to spend some time. Unfortunately I will not have the chance... At least not as Paper Plane. Go there soon if you wish to experience Paper Plane, if not next month maybe... ? It will provide a different space in a different time. Although I hope the man with his notebook may still be there... Just writing a different story.

I'm a bit of a Brussel Sprouts connoisseur, thus I had to come to the Paper Plane. I'm not sure what's harder to find, Brussel Sprouts this good or the door to Paper Plane. After being sidetracked at Victory, and walking through the Mexican restaurant, I finally arrived. I heard a lot of hype about the place. It is without a doubt a unique and fine business. It just doesn't stand out as much as thought it would. The libations were phenomenal, the bartenders knowledgable, and the decor was very fitting. As for those sprouts! Woah! They are on another level. They can match up with any other I've had. This and Victory show me why people were telling me Decatur is the Brooklyn of Atlanta.

Obsessed!! I love this hidden gem in decatur. Fabulous cocktail menu that changes with the season. The steak dinner is enough to share among three people and is on par with Rathbuns if you are a steak fan. On my last visit I had the fondue and cannot wait to return and get some more! Not the best dessert menu, but Cakes and Ale around the corner has you covered there. Otherwise, this place is a knock out from top to bottom!

This is a great place to grab a drink. The ambiance is very 1960s cocktail lounge, right down to the retro counting clock that flips forward, minute by minute. As other Yelpers have said, it is very small- tucked into the alleyway, and with only perhaps 7 tables to be seated at. We grabbed a drink (or three) at the bar, and while my cocktails were delicious and expertly prepared by friendly bartenders, the food was just boring. I always get really excited when I see beef/steak tartare on a menu, but this take on it had a cooked egg placed atop, which really just made the whole thing have a weird, chewy consistency. And the seasoning just wasn't there for me. The poutine was pretty run-of-the-mill, and so was our steak frites entree. When restaurants shrink their menus to only a few items, I expect everything to be stellar as they have much fewer options to have to work on preparing. But in this case, the smaller menu was just... meh. I'll definitely go back for some cocktails, but that's probably it. If you do go here, go with the mindset that this is a bar first with some unique, upscale bar plates. That should set your expectations a little bit more realistically for what the experience is.

Paper Plane is awesome! My wife and I came here for drinks one night before heading over to Cakes & Ale for dinner. Paul, the previous owner and bartender, took amazing care of us! The drinks were delicious and he talked us through how each cocktail was made and why certain things are mixed together. It was like getting to have a chef's table experience, but sitting at the bar. I love everything about this place, even all the hipsters.

I kind of love this bar! I went on a Saturday night for birthday drinks and my partner and I were lucky enough to get a seat at the bar. Our bartender was awesome and the drinks were very unique and tasty. I enjoyed watching the bartender make the drinks- it is truly an art at Paper Plane. These guys are the real deal. The atmosphere was great. Just the right amount of crowd for the place to be lively, but not a "standing room only" kind of place. It seems like the type of place that Ron Burgundy would go to for a nice scotch after a hard day of reporting the news.. Something about the lighting and the music and the look of the patrons- it just felt like the 70's to me. Or at least how I imagine the 70's to be! Although I was not here to eat, I checked out the menu and there are some interesting options. As a vegan, I didn't see too much that I would be partaking in- but I also did not inquire to see if they would be able to accommodate. No matter- the drinks were good enough to warrant a return visit. With ATL weather getting warmer and warmer, I will probably try to snag a table outdoors next time.

Get ready to make like a secret agent man. The mood is retro, but funky. The cocktails are straight-up amazing, and the food is a lot of fun. My only regret is that they kept running out of food. Food that I WANTED. It was their last night with that menu, but I still would've been happier if they'd had more of the deliciousness. All in all, a fantastic way to spend an evening in a memorable setting.

A group of us were in the mood for some fancy cocktails and after the rave reviews both both critics like David Wondrich and yelp lay persons. How could it not be awesome, it was created by the same guy who gave us Victory. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I hoped it would at least be on par with the cocktails at Kimball House, but alas no such luck. The first thing that disappointed me was the menu. There just did not seem to be a huge selection of craft cocktails. I believe between the 6 of us we got everything on the menu. Granted, they could make something that is not on the menu but I wanted to try one of their signature creations. I thought the drinks were too sweet and the entire time I wanted to leave and go to Victory. Maybe it was the bartender that night or maybe the menu at the time didn't align to my taste but I left disappointed.

Second time coming here...I really do like this bar...I'm interested in seeing the three bars that Atlanta magazine ranks higher than this place. This time around I tried the steak burger...and it was GREAT. Great food...great drinks...and great service Kindell is a great bartender

Met a couple of friends here for cocktails on a Friday evening. We like to sit at the bar and upon walking in I spotted three seats on the curve of the bar and thought score! Then was told that you have to reserve seats at the bar. Okay, not a problem as I was still waiting for my other two cohorts. We sat on the patio which is very cool in itself as far as being in an alley way - felt a bit European to me. We all ordered the Dr. Cocktail, a rum based drink, and it was an excellent choice. About half way through our second cocktail we were told three seats were available at the bar so we moved inside. Basically, we wanted to get the feel of the vibe on this touted cool new spot. Pretty cool sleek yet retro atmosphere. The service was a bit spotty on the patio but not at the bar. I look forward to coming back to this gem!

Who doesn't love personalized service and delicious food and drinks?! We went to paper plane with a larger group (which is hard since they only have a few booths and it is a relatively small space). We had a reservation (A MUST!), so we got in quickly. We had several delicious cocktails from their menu, and were very impressed when Paul Calvert came over to our table to discuss the various liquors and cocktails with one of our table-mates who had questions. I only tried some of the cheese board and one other appetizer, but both were great, and more importantly the cocktails were inventive, fresh, seasonal, strong and delicious! Definitely check them out.

Sensational setting, style, and smiles. Lovely October Atlanta evening for patio fare. Crafty cocktails with varied booziness and compliments. Cheese curds and olives. Marinated steak with pineapple and feta. Almond ice cream with gewy dark chocolate. I'll return on future Atlanta trips :)

Paper Plane is a lovely, cozy little spot with great drinks and good food. I really enjoyed watching Paul Calvert work as he prepared delicious, delicious cocktails. We arrived around 7:30 on a Saturday night and managed to snag the only open seats at the bar. There are three types of seating here: bar, booths for groups of larger than two, and outdoor tables for between two and four. Overall, it's a pretty small space. I had three cocktails, two from the menu and a classic gin and tonic. The menu changes regularly, so there are always new creations to enjoy. My first cocktail was a variation on the Manhattan and the second contained cachaca. They were both delicious. My SO had a tequila cocktail that was nice and fruity. Food-wise, we started with the swordfish belly and pork belly tastings. The swordfish was fantastic. The pork belly was a bit on the salty side but very good. I had the blade steak for my entree and my SO went with the braised pork collar. Both dishes were very good. Mine came with a smoked pepper puree that went perfectly with the steak. Overall, though, I think the pork was the more successful dish. It came with Napa cabbage, peanuts, and a mustard sauce. We shared a side of fingerling potatoes that I hope stay on the menu forever because they were amazing. Service was good - Paul was attentive and patient with my booze-related questions. Overall, I think that everything about Paper Plane is solid. This is a great spot for a light dinner, a full dinner, or just drinks.

This was a chill laid back place where you can have drinks in a quiet setting and enjoy the downtown atmosphere really enjoyed myself and would definitely go back

Even on a cold evening, the ambiance and intimacy of Paper Plane's secluded outdoor patio makes you feel like your sitting in a leather armchair in front of the fire. Whether it was good friends, good conversation, or the good drinks... I felt at home here. I can't speak for the full menu, but the bar menu offered a selection of snack foods not to be passed on. The pickled olives were delicious (don't pass these up if you go for cocktails) and their cheese selection, albeit small is very affordable. They're drink selections are creative and delicious (don't be afraid to ask your waitress about them- they'll be honest about flavor) and they do not skimp on filling the wine glass.

Paper plane is a small "supper club" restaurant in the back of Victory Sandwich bar in Decatur. It is really small and gets really packed so make sure you have a reservation. The atmosphere is dark, loud, and hip. They had great cocktails, which were served to us by Paul Calvert (one of Atlanta's best known bartenders) We only tried some appetizers for food, but they were excellent as well.

Hand downs best place for a cocktail! Tried the whole menu and I'd say watch out for the last one.

This restaurant is nothing but awesome. The entrance is quite interesting- kinda like an alley, but it was lit up with lights. Came here on a Friday evening for a late dinner and drinks with friends. The wait was about 15 minutes. The waiters were very nice and attentive. During our wait, we were checked on at least 3+ times to see if we wanted to order any drinks or snacks to munch on. Luckily our wait for a patio seating turned into a booth inside. YES! A/C! DRINKS Von Winning Reisling was the white wine we all agreed upon thanks to a recommendation from one of the waiters that helped us. We got a bottle to celebrate good times and the last day of spring and start of summer. Lame, I know. ENTREE I ordered the Pork Chops and a side of Summer Squash, Pickled Onions, & Feta. This was a recommendation from our waitress, Leah. I was going to order the Seafood Scallops, but I'll have to come back and try that another time as well as the steak entrees. The pork was delicious! Tender and flavorful. The side of Summer Squash, pickled onions, & feta was surprisingly good. I didn't expect how refreshing it would taste. The cilantro definitely helped that side out lots. Service was exceptional. Leah was very helpful. Paul was also great (I believe he's apart of management). Excited to come back!

Great spot in Decatur for an "adult" drink. No green apple cosmos here. Came for drinks and sat on the lovely patio/alleyway outside. Especially loved the lights hanging above our heads. Paper Plane takes their drinks pretty serious. All of the hand-crafted cocktails are very manly (not bad, if you like whisky and non frou-frou drinks), but for those who like a little sugar in their libation I highly recommend the OTP (made of corn whisky and strawberry puree) and the North Druid HIlls (with aquavit, lemon and honey).

What does a paper plane do? Glide ever so slightly before crashing to the earth - which is what this place is proceeding to do. Just see Eddie U's review. Plus the bathrooms are disgusting and the place is so small, you have to wait for a table right next to the smelly, repulsive facilities. Gross! Also, the hostess is unfriendly and the management is unapologetic about the sad state of their rest room facilities.

Had dinner with a few friends here over the weekend. There was no wait and it never really got packed or too busy. It was mostly an older crowd coming in for drinks after work rather than for food. I had the sea scallops, which were delicious and perfectly prepared. The summer squash and the sauce that it came with were good, but the other side, which I'm guessing is nasturtium from the menu, was not good. I haven't had it before so I'm not sure how it should be prepared, but it just tasted burnt and salty with no real flavor. My friends ordered the pork chops and the hanger steak. The waitress didn't ask how my friend wanted her steak prepared. Not sure if that's a thing, but it would have been nice since my friend would have liked her steak a little more cooked. It was still tasty, but nothing special. The pork chop was good but the portion was on the smaller side. My friend was still hungry after his meal, but that might just be him. Overall, the hostess and the servers were attentive, friendly and helpful. The food was decent, but special enough for me to come back to eat. It seems more of a popular spot to grab a drink or two and enjoy the ambience.

I wasn't exactly sure what our experience was going to be like with Paper Plane since we had only seen some dark photos of cocktails, an alleyway, and some badly lit photos of food (Thanks a lot cellphone cameras). Preconceived opinions be damned! We came in, on a whim, on Valentine's Day and had a smashing good time. First, the setting is small. Really small. The number of seats at the bar are cozy and there are some equally cozy booths that line the wall. Along with a 270º booth near the end of the bar. The lighting is dim, the decor is pretty minimal, and the music is loud. Ahhhhh. You hear that? It's the brisk sigh of comfort that makes you feel like you're some exclusive member at a speakeasy in prohibition times. The drinks are good. Damn good, in fact. The list is pretty manageable and they have a good mix of classics with their own creations. I had a fantastic gin cocktail with lemon and bitters. Can't remember the kitschy name, but I loved it to the very last drop. With our seats at the bar, we had our eyes buried in mixology happening before us. They are making some cool stuff at that bar. Stuff with egg whites, crazy bourbons, absinthe, giant ice cubes, and old-fashioned soda water in the cool sprayer bottles. *Cue twisty moustachioed male bartender and red lipstick-touting female bartenders' keen sense of shaking drinks* The food was effing amazing. We ordered a winter salad and every side that they had on the menu -- creamed kale, brussels sprouts, potatoes au gratin, and roasted cauliflower. All of them were fantastic and delightfully vegetarian. We left no veggie behind. Now, dessert. Don't be a square. Order the grapefruit pie. I know. It sounds weird. It looks weird. The taste? Hmmm... I'd probably compare it to my taste buds winning the freaking lottery. Tart, bitter, slightly sweet, and balanced. The house-made graham was stupendous. Staff was so friendly and conversational (a rarity in a speakeasy-style bar) and the prices are pretty fair. I can't wait for our return visit. This place is the epitome of badassery.

Every single thing I put in my mouth was perfection and made with absolute care. This is the best meal I've had this year. Each pickle in the mix had separate picking herbs. The okra was seasoned with smoked paprika. Salad of endive, arugula, toasted peanuts and peach preserves was inventive. Pork was tender and smoky, pickled onions and corn pone, potatoes au gratin, all superb. Drinks are strong and aromatic. Enjoyed summer clothes. Don't miss dessert. Sundae with fig leaf ice cream, candied pecans, bourbon caramel, and peach preserves. Southern divinity, dahlin! Cheers-

Oh dear oh dear so sad to report a meh experience at my beloved PP. A month ago, Paul and I had a wonderful meal sitting outside (or at least to me, Paul says food just okay) - beautiful Spring day & fantastic service. But last night, sigh. Res with the girls. As always terrific service but the food - way way way too salty, cheese plate skimpy, huge steak not at all appealing, very fatty. Cocktails just weird - I liked the gin mixes but one that came in a tiki ceramic container - cute but horrible - literally tasted like it contained a cigarette butt. Exception to the doom and gloom, wonderful desserts mint chocolate thing and strawberry with frozen creme - I am not a dessert person but I am pretty sure I hogged the desserts. Nice ending to a disappointing meal. I will give PP another shot but my girls alas will not.

It's a very nice, very nice. I've been to 'Victory Sandwich Bar' several times now and it was only my second to last visit when I finally noticed where Paper Plane is located. It's in the alley way directly behind it, with a black door marked with an illustration of - you guessed it - a paper plane. I love the hidden aspect! The space itself is quite small. We came in on a Friday night, and it seemed like it was at capacity. The hostess greeted us fairly promptly and brought us a menu. She said if we wanted to sit inside it would be about a 20-30 minute wait. There was ample seating outside - no wait - and though it looked like it could rain we decided to risk it; several other parties followed our lead. A somewhat nerdy thing to observe but I loved the chairs they had for the patio/alley seating, super comfortable annnnd chic. The boyfriend and I had other plans for dinner, so we were here basically to drink. Classy, I know. I overheard our server tell another couple that this was the first night on a new menu, so all the cocktails were new. I wish I had thought to take a picture of the menu because for the life of me I can't remember the name of any of the cocktails - the perils of reviewing of a bar, I suppose. We had three cocktails, they were all delicious and masterfully crafted. I also really liked that they all looked differently as well; they each come out in different glasses, different garnishes, even different ice cubes. The boyfriend fell in love with one of the drinks (??? I think it was called __________ Wednesday). Everything on the dessert menu sounded too good to walk away from so we ordered the 'Date Torte' which was toffee, goat cheese, and ice cream amazing-ness. I can't wait to go back and try everything else on the menu! The service was great as well.

If you haven't checked out Paper Plane, please head over there as quickly as possible. The guys and gals at this joint really make all the difference. We headed in after taking a few laps around the square and realizing that we probably wouldn't be able to find anywhere exciting to go on, yes, Valentine's Day. The Mr and I aren't really into the prix fixe idea, so we were hoping for something a little more low key. We had been chatting about Paper Plane for a while, and finally thought we would see if, perchance, they would be able to find a spot for the two of us. Initially, the answer was no. Every booth and bar chair was taken by people firmly planted and excited to be indulging in the finest of cocktails and inventive menu. But the hostess managed to encourage a couple of bar-sitters to make their exit, and we were given a spot at the bar, right in front of Maxine, the most ADORABLE cocktail slinger around! We each ordered a drink. I had the Sammy Davis Junior Jr and the Mr went with the 21st Century (or something like that). Both drinks were nicely balanced and plenty boozy. Perfect. On the food side of things, we selected the winter salad (YUM!) as well as all, yes all, the sides. Brussels sprouts, cheesy potatoes, creamed kale (YES YES YES), and something else that was equally delightful. We also ordered the grapefruit pie for dessert. Imagine a deconstructed grapefruit cheesecake that captures the flavor of that citrus fruit perfectly (slightly bitter, sour, mildly sweet) with perfect execution. Needless to say, we talked about it the whole way home. Props to these guys. Paper Plane is a charming destination for foodies and cocktail connoisseurs alike. Go there. Thank me later.

I am so glad Paper Plane is a (not so) hidden gem in downtown Decatur. The atmosphere is cool and relaxed, the bartenders know what they're doing and the cocktail menu changes frequently and is always interesting. That being said, I've never gotten a bad or boring cocktail at this place--I love to try a new one every time I go in and each one is always complex and delicious. Cheers, Paper Plane!

This place has the same address (on Yelp, anyway) as the bar in the front, on street level. You walk down a little alleyway and head down the stairs and there you are: Paper Plane. We'd just had a pretty spectacular (and boozy) dinner at Kimball House (walkable, btw), so we were really just getting a nightcap. Or that's what we told ourselves, anyway. The bartender was great. Their cocktails were delicious, mostly slight variations on some of my favorite standards. I also particularly liked that the menu had the drinks on a little timeline, which was cool for those of us who pay attention to what kind of cocktails "happened" when. I'd totally go back.

They can't handle volume. We walked in and stayed at the bar and waited for service for a while. It turned out that bartenders were overwhelmed and started to give attitude. I understand how it feels to be in that situation but don't want to have any part of it. Walked out and they didn't care. We had great time during previous visits thus the extra star. We will be back and try it again since it is in our neighborhood and we won't let couple of crappy DB bartenders ruin the business owners hard work.

Great service, we sat at the bar. Food and presentation was great cozy atmosphere For two: bone marrow was sooooo good. Squash Soup, we only ordered one, but we should have gotten one for each of us Potato and root au gratin side - cheesy and too salty for our taste

Been here many times and always enjoy it but this is a first. Go to the bar to get a drink while we wait on a table...hostess comes over and tells us we have to put our name in at the bar before we can get a drink. Tell her we already put our name in and that we are just getting a drink while we wait. She tells us again that we have to put our name in if we want to order from the bar...by the 4th time we did this dance the bartender had that "WTF" look on his face and the couple sitting at the bar were having a good laugh. Needless to say we gave up and left. Kinda the point in having a bar isn't it?

A genuine treat. The waitresses actually know what they are talking about. I had trouble picking out a drink and the informed waitress was able to select one based on my preferences ...which I described inarticulately. The fixed price menu on new year's was worth every penny. Everything is served in an eye pleasing arrangement and the food is always delicious.

Pretty good food and nice ambiance. Still a bit noisy for my idea of an ideal date place, but overall pretty nice. Highlights: Drinks were terrific. Brussels sprouts were amazing. Squash soup was tasty, garnished with watercress and nuts. Potatoes au gratin were rich and luscious. I thought the chicken was delicious, but my date felt like she could have made it herself. Considering I've eaten chicken about 5 times in the last 5 years, I would trust her lackluster attitude towards it over mine! Also, I've had way better sea bass, but it wasn't bad. Cons: The prices were reasonable, but seemed a bit high only because the portions were fairly modest. Conclusion: The sides were wildly better than the main courses. I highly recommend this place for drinks and nibbles before going to dinner.

Nostalgic, stylized retro decor...my friend noted that they have similar wood paneling, retro flip style electric clock, and hi-fi system (that wouldn't be out of place hooked up to a record player) in her parents' basement. Cool, but a little too cool...maybe trying a little too hard? Maybe I'm just not cool enough to appreciate it. If you like the Mad Men era or style, you'll like this place. waited awhile to post this, since it's a new place and is probably still trying to get things running. Paper Plane is tiny and its entrance is in the alley next to Victory Sandwich. I think you can also access through a staircase from Victory Sandwich. There are 5 total u-shaped booths, which has the rule that less than 3 people in a party can't be seated in them, even when there are multiple booths open (with the bar stools filled), there is no line, and even if offers were made to ask others to join or to pay for 3 people's worth of drinks and food. Dumb rule, especially if there is no one else waiting. I hope there's also a rule that parties over 2 people aren't allowed to take up stools at the bar. Yeah, I'm talking to you, laughing sorority girls ordering pink drinks. My friend asked the bartender to make her a drink of his choice, with direction that she did not want the drink to be sweet...and he ends up making her a sweet pink drink. This is not the place to eat if you are starving...only small plates on the menu, and they definitely are small. Luckily, i ordered a dish that was delicous...the pork cheeks, which is more than i can say for my friend (her fish collar smelled awful and made my stomach turn). I think I inhaled my food in a few minutes, and had to head to another restaurant to find more food. I know they are catering to a certain style and niche, but the menu is lacking one or two snack items that could go with cocktails.

Finally had drinks here last weekend and it was so worth the wait. It was packed when we first arrived so we went to Victory to grab some food and tried again afterwards. A little disappointed Paul wasn't at the bar, but the other bartenders are fantastic so no worries there. We had an About Last Night, a Bitter Southerner, and a Life of Ryan (can you tell we're all whiskey fans?). Each drink was wonderful and I wish we could have stayed longer but it was already getting late. I will definitely plan to come back for dinner- if the food is even half as good as the drinks it'll be well worth it.

Yelpers! you have never let me down before. That's why I was extremely surprised when to see that you guys gave this place 4-5 stars. However, after reading over some of the reviews, I see that you're partially right. It's a good place to have a drink with someone special, a few friends or even by yourself. However, I would not order any food from this place only because it's not worth the money. As a Chef, I'm always excited to see something new on the menu. When I looked at this menu and saw "Morcilla" and "Pork Belly" i was excited. I especially wanted to try the "Morcilla" (blood sausage) because it's a traditional food that's served around Christmas in Puerto Rico and I haven't had if for a long long time. So, I checked it out. It was on a taster menu so you had the option of ordering all four Items, Morcilla, Pork Belly, Baby Octopus and some sort of sausage, I think, for 28 bucks. Or you can get them individually for 7 bucks each. I opted to try the blood sausage and the pork belly. When that shit came out fellow Yelpers, I really wanted to scream. It was two small pieces of "pork belly", which was more like two pieces of fat, and one FLAT piece of blood sausage! They basically had to make up the plate with bread. I swear that the pork belly was literally just fried fat glob and the peaces were about two thirds the size of my pinky finger. The blood sausage was a thin square sheet that stuck the the bottom of the tiny plate. And I paid 14 bucks for that? Never again. Two things that are rules of thumbs when I go to a restaurants. One, go to the bathroom. If is't dirty, don't eat there. period! I've never been steered wrong with this rule Two, if you can't get the starter right, why bother ordering anything else. It's just not gonna work. you will be disappointed every time. The only thing that made the visit to this place somewhat enjoyable was Hanna the bartender. She was a good 'ol gal from Boston that always had good conversation and made sure I had everything I needed. She was the best thing at the bar. She was just easy to talk to and she knew i wasn't satisfied with my plate but she tried her best to make me feel comfortable til the end. Hanna, you deserve so much more. Needless to say i will never eat there again. But i will have a drink or two when Hanna is bartender...

A bit like a retro speak easy hidden away in Decatur. It is loud, small, and very good. Excellent drinks and food. It's an experience almost like being transported back a few years in time. Worth trying. It's an adventure of sorts...

Died and gone to speakeasy-like heaven! I stumbled upon this adorable vintage-y bar after dinner nearby in Decatur square. I was surprised to find this was one of the two places open on Saturday night around 11:30pm. Definitely bypass the garden area and go inside. It is sultry and intimate, perfect for a date. I was there with a group of girlfriends and we sat at a booth big enough for 6. Great spot. I recommend the port!

Incredibly rude waitress. My friend ordered a drink that she didn't like. She had one sip and asked the waitress if she could get another drink since this wasn't to her liking. At this point, the waitress gave a lot of attitude explaining that they wouldn't make any money if everyone returned their drink. She offered to take the drink back to the bartender to make sure it was made correctly. She charged my friend for the drink that she removed and was snarky. When my friend asked if she had talked with the bartender, she curtly responded that it was made correctly. In hindsight, we should have asked for a manager. If you can't stand behind your drinks, then you shouldn't be in business since you are a BAR. It's a shame, because most of their other drinks are lovely, the place is cute but the attitude was awful.

Let me start with saying that the food is beyond the shadow of a doubt 5-Star Worthy! The only reason I did not give a 5 star review was for ambiance and service. Ambiance: I chose this spot for a special occasion and was so excited to finally be able to try it! We went on a Thursday night and were sat at a cool booth inside. The bar was super cool, but the lighting was really poor and there was no decor on these super retro wood panel walls which seemed odd to me. I appreciate soft lighting, but the entire meal, our eyes were fighting. Though the bar itself was full, we were one of two tables while we were there and it was strangely quiet. It created a bit of an odd vibe. Service: our server, Leah, was great. Very friendly, knowledgeable, witty. She was great. Loved her. We were a little off-put by a gentleman who was walking around, who, unfortunately, I think may have been a manager. He came over to our table a few times and asked us various questions that Leah would soon follow him with. She didn't need help and I thought it was odd that he kept coming over and being as disengaged and apathetic to us. He was not friendly at all. Never smiled at us, and hardly even made eye contact. If you're going to engage with a table... engage. Just odd. Food: I was at first surprised at the lack of options on their dinner menu. But hey, know that though they may not have a huge menu, they could not possibly prepare any of those dishes better. Sweet Jesus. We started off with a cheese plate after our server, Leah, explained the types of cheeses and made her recommendations. They were great. My boyfriend and I split the Cowboy Cut, a 2inch thick, 1lb dry aged ribeye with cippolini, baby carrot, mushroom bordelaise, and garlic purée. SWEET MOTHER OF ALL THAT IS HOLY IN THE WORLD. Ok. Steak. I get it, but I (nor any one else at our table) has ever... ever... had a better steak then this. There is so much flavor in it and it is perfectly charred on either side. Completely melts in your mouth. Not even joking or trying to be funny here, but it was not possible for me to take a bite out of this without my eyes fluttering and closing. We got a side of the potatoes and Brussels sprouts which were both offensively delicious as well. Our friends got the ribeye and the hanger. Both were great, but they didn't stand a chance up against the Cowboy Cut that we had. So what may have just been an unusual night at paper plane from a ambiance perspective, certainly turned itself around for me. I can honestly say that this was the best meal I've had this year (and I thought my meal at Kimball House earlier this week was good!). I hope to be back to try it again...

I finally made it to Paper Plane. I really liked this place. The AJC review on it starts off with the writer trying to convince himself/herself that Paper Plane is not a speakeasy. I'll be honest, I'm not excited by the whole retro/speakeasy/hipster thing. So, I was a bit tepid about this place, as it is definitely a hispter-we're not a speakeasy-but-we-really-are-a-speakeasy kind of place. The impossibility of getting their phone number, the "we're going to be so cool that you'll be lucky to know about us" thing was really off-putting. So, with all of that said, I really, really loved this place. It's great. I went there with my wife and some friends. We got there early enough, as they don't take reservations and only have a few tables (we wanted to eat). From the first thing we ordered (cocktails) through the end of the meal, we were consistently impressed. We had a smattering of cocktails, some wine, the cheese (almost all of them), pickled things, some fish and some meat. Everything was good. I think the swordfish (poached in duck fat) was outstanding. The wine I had was very good, and all of the drinks were both creative and good. The reputation it has for its drinks is well-deserved. The only thing I'll say that is negative is that the food portions are extremely small. They openly tell you that before you order, but for the prices (swordfish was $20), I was surprised by how small they all were. But, again, it was good, and I'm definitely going back.

Went on a Sat night and it was slammed, but the host and servers where just amazing which definitely makes the experience worthwhile. Now with that being said, it's hip, it's trendy (for now) and may prove to have longevity in this business, but plan on definitely spending some $$ while there. They have excellent drinks (albeit somewhat confusing unless you are a true connoisseur all things liquor & accoutrements). Dinner was good, but I'm not sure I would crave the food when the drinks are clearly the highlight. I agree with other folks in saying, come for a cocktail or 2 and plan on loud & boisterous bar crowd which can be fun depending on your mood.

I have a drinking problem. You see, I've become dreadfully spoiled when it comes to a perfectly prepared cocktail. Especially in Decatur. First it was the Aviation at the Iberian Pig, then the seasonal specials at Leon's, then Whiskey Wednesdays at Pinewood... and now Paper Plane?! Am I expected to bar hop every single time I'm in the hood? Apparently so. Trust me, this isn't a problem I'm complaining about. Aesthetically, Paper Plane might be my favorite of all the Decatur bars. It's itty bitty but every inch of it is sleek yet retro without being cold or kitschy. In a word, perfect. A little Mad Men without screaming it, so you're more hopeful to see the genuinely funny (or so I'd imagine) Jon Hamm sipping on a Sazerac vs. the dastardly Don Draper with an Old Fashioned. Either way, you'll see attractive men with great drinks. A win-win. I highly recommend the Red Rooster, and I don't recommend coming here with your 18 gal pals expecting to get your booze on. This is a quiet, loungey kind of spot best reserved for dates that you actually want to see again and friends with which you have deep conversations. Or come by yourself: the bartenders are plenty friendly. I can't wait to try the food.

I've been using yelp for a long time now and I've found some really great food by doing so, but I've NEVER posted a review until today. Paper Plane was AMAZING. Fantastic food. Exceptional drinks. Great atmosphere. All in all a great evening. My group had the burger, smoked chicken, mussels and steak & frites and all plates were consumed with audible ooh's, aah's and mmm's.

The most common thread in all these Paper Plane reviews is the space itself. That's well-deserved. With the wood paneling, groovy hi-fi, and half moon booths, it's at once chic and retro and it felt like drinking in a Dewars print ad from the Oct 1972 issue of Playboy. I'll get back to that. Let me start from the beginning. To celebrate my wife's birthday, we went on a grown-up bar crawl. This meant cocktails and noshes at Iberian Pig, Paper Plane, Cakes and Ale, and the Pinewood. And of all the gin joints in all this town, we loved Paper Plane's cocktails the most. The attention to detail, down the ice cubes--didn't think I was paying that close attention, did you, Hipster Bartender dude?--is impressive. We tried a few, but that Red Rooster drink, that one I really liked. It's refreshing with a spicy finish. We enjoyed the food as well. The pickles accompanied the drinks in just the right way. The pork belly was meaty and scrumptious. The only misfire was the smoked chicken. While tasty in and of itself, keeping the skin on was a mistake since it turned gummy. Either crisp that bad boy up or remove it all together. Which brings me back to the atmosphere. It was equally split between hipsters and the elderly (who, in many cases, were dressed the exact same--ah, hipsters, your irony knows no bounds.) Granted, it was still early (because I have a one year old now and 7pm is the equivalent of 1am to non-parents) so take the presence of all the old people with a grain of salt. Also, since I'm obviously not a hipster, I think to the outside observer, I probably fell squarely into that elderly demographic. Still, my wife commented on the crowd bifurcation. "What's up with the hipsters and the old people?" she asked rhetorically. "How do we know these old people weren't the hipsters of their day?" I answered. "I mean, look at this place. I bet you this brings back some awesome 40 year old memories for some of these cats." I pointed out a group of blue hairs and no-hairs. "See that guy? I bet he hosted some raucous key parties in his day, full of blow and wide lapels. And that lady next to him? She ran a train on some serious 70s thatch. These people have forgotten more about life than we'll ever get to know." So if you're at Paper Plane kind of early and surrounded by a bunch of old people, order up a cocktail and give them a wink. We all know what they've been up to, those saucy Social Security recipients. Four and a half stars. (Another visit like the one I just had, I'll undoubtedly bump it to 5.)

One of my fave haunts. Mad Men-esque vibe. Haven't tried the food but had 4 drinks and all were perfectly balanced while complex. Each cocktail is around 9 to 12 bucks. Also, this place is in a great area to eat and then walk around to bar hop. Go eat and have drinks at Iberian Pig or No. 246 nearby or Brick Store and then hit up Victory and Paper Plane. You're welcome.

Went with my wife tonight for dinner. The drinks were fantastic but the dinner menu was very short and we didn't really see anything that was interesting so we had apps and drinks and went elsewhere but we were impressed with the ambience and the apps and drinks. This is now our pre-dinner drink spot in Decatur. And Uber X from our house was only 9 bucks so it was a great night

This review is only about the food since I didn't drink the night I went. You must get the snapper/bean plate. It's not on the menu but is currently one of their specials. It's a thin portion of snapper (not deboned) on a bed of lemony, perfectly seasoned beans. Yummm. We also had the swordfish, which was flavorless by itself, but the sauces and the pickled radish that came with it were delicious. Speaking of pickles, get the pickles. You get a small ramekin size sampling of pickled cucumbers, okra, cherries, peaches, etc. The fruit might sound weird, but trust me it is really good stuff. The brussel sprouts are ok- they are cut in half and cooked with bacon. I don't think I would get these again but not something to avoid on the menu. I can't wait to come here again and try some more things on the menu and their drinks. Apparently drinks are listed in a progressive manner with light/fruity on top and heavier/savory drinks near the bottom. The decor is super cute. I really like the small space and the clean,retro-inspired layout of the place. It also cracks me up that they have a record player looking thing to play music, but it really holds an iPod inside.

Looking for a bar in 1960's New York in an episode of Mad Men? I found it for you and you're welcome. I could live here..waiting on Don Draper to arrive with his savuer de jour..while drinking some kinda bourbon concoction and munching on quail with butter beans...yes, please. I prefer to enter via the unmarked door in the alley between Victory and Cakes & Ale (like you're going to Raging Burrito's patio) but you can also get there from Victory's front door - so less dramatic tho! Don't tell too many ppl tho or I'll have to kill you. O o ~

This spot is incredible, the drinks are the best ive had in Atlanta and the food is also very good. The bar staff is real friendly and are will make you a great drink no matter your tastes. The decor in this place really brings you back and makes you feel like you have gone into a time machine. Ive made it a regular spot and im sure once you have been you will too. Formal Wednesdays have seem to become a thing here so you will definitely find a group of well to do ladies and gentleman suited up if you stop in then.

I love Victory, so I had pretty high expectations for this place. I heard the cocktails were great, and they were, but I don't even want to talk about those. The food was amazing! I was blown away by the construction and presentation of each dish. You could easily tell someone put a lot of time into making sure everything that went out of the kitchen was perfect. We had the winter salad, which used brown sugar and earthy vegetables in a way I've never seen before on a salad. I ran my finger over the bottom of the plate when we were done...for a salad! For entrees, the lamb and bass were both excellent. Creamed kale was perfect. Running out of adjectives here. And the dessert, some kind of ginger and pecan dish, perfect cap to the evening. Now my biggest problem will be going to that building in Decatur and trying to figure out if we want to go to Victory or Paper Plane!

What a gem! Four of us decided to check this place out for dinner on a chilly Saturday night; we sat outside warmed by the heaters and had an Ah-mazing meal! The drinks and service were great and the food was fantastic!

My wife and I went here with some friends recently for drinks and dinner. We were excited because we had heard great things about they place, and I had enjoyed the drinks at Victory. Our experience was mostly mixed. As is well known, the drinks here were great. The ladies enjoyed the wine, and the guys enjoyed our mixed drinks. Our food was the disappointing part. We started with a cheese plate. The combo of cheeses felt generally boring. Two almost tasted identical. We then received our main plates. My braised pork was overcooked and underflavored. I expect braised pork to be really moist and strongly flavored. I was disappointed. The hanger steak was mediocre. Not terrible, just probably not worth ordering again. The atmosphere was great, the drinks were great. I just hope their food catches up to the rest of the excellence of this place.

Paper Plane's policy of not allowing customers to charge their cell phone in the establishment is exactly what is wrong with America. What happened to rule #1 in business "To Service Thy Customer"? As a customer of this "fine" establishment being told to go home and charge my cell phone is the equivalent of telling me to keep my 25% tip, which I'm more than happy to do, where I can also drink without paying a 71% margin on the base cost of the alcohol that I am purchasing. Paper Plane, learn to treat your customers right otherwise you all can join the masses of other idiots standing in line at your local unemployment office.

Amazing cocktails and lovely atmosphere. Worth making a reservation since it's very small. The food menu was quite limited and a little too adventurous for my taste.

My boyfriend and I were looking for a different place to go for a date and Paper Plane was recommended by a friend. We looked at it online beforehand and saw a few options on their menu that looked both delicious and in a decent price-range for date-night. We got there and liked the overall ambiance of this small little restaurant and opted to have a table on the patio next to some heaters. It was really nice. We also ordered drinks which I have to say were delicious! When it came time to order our food, the food we had decided on was about $25 more than what was on the online menu. We mentioned this to the waitress and she said the menu they had the restaurant was accurate, even though the menu we looked at before was straight from their website. We expressed our frustration with the fact that we felt a little misled and instead of respectfully discussing it with us, she was very short and condescending. She left and we tried to find something else on the menu. The manager then came out saying she heard we had an issue. We again expressed that it was weird how their menus online had different prices for the item of the same name and we weren't prepared to pay that much more for a meal. She said their menus change so often that you can't rely on the prices online and instead the restaurant ones are best. When we asked why the price was so much higher, she said salads were added to the meal and the meat was slightly larger (for $25 more I would expect a side of a lovely little steak). She again had a disrespectful, challenging attitude instead of discussing it with us nicely. We were not rude or even difficult, we were just confused and a little frustrated that the prices had changed that much (especially considering the online menu was their own). We ended up leaving after the one drink and headed down the street to a really wonderful restaurant with great food and ambiance. We probably ended up paying around the same but the customer service was so much more impressive and helpful. I gave this restaurant two stars instead of one because the drink I had was really good.

Every time I visit Atlanta I look forward to coming to Paper Plane. The food has always been superb and the cocktails are incredible. We often have to wait for a table, but it's always worth it. The first time I went, I had braised lamb belly which I refused to share with my friends. My friends got the chilled corn soup and goat cheese and beet salad for starters. I know it's hard to believe, but everything was amazing. When we took our second trip, I was a little disappointed that they were out of the fish option I wanted. What a happy incident that turned out to be! Instead I got the strip steak and it blew my mind. It was cooked PERFECTLY and I was silent until every bit of it was consumed. The cocktail list changes pretty often, so I'm always excited to try a new beverage. We were also told by a bartender at a trendy Buckhead restaurant that it was his favorite place for cocktails. A place that can please a bartender? Sign me up! This intimate restaurant is worth every penny. Paper Plane is the place I would take out of town guests or a date I'd like to impress. And I'll be back for more in October!

I absolutely love this bar (lounge?)! I'm actually reluctant to even write a review because I want it to remain a hidden gem. When I was told about an awesome Top Secret bar in Decatur, I was both intrigued and skeptical about how amazing it actually was. Any doubt I had was instantly washed away they second I walked in the door. Actually, it was washed away before I even walked in the door and saw what the door actually said - "Members and Non-Members Only." The door is inconspicuously placed in the back of Victory near the bathrooms and would easily be overlooked as a storage closet by someone who didn't know Paper Plane existed. When you walk in, the place has a bit of a speak-easy feel to it, at least it did to me. It's a bit small, but feels more intimate than cramped. Yes, most of the people working there are a bit hispster, but I definitely would not consider this to be a hipster bar. It's style is a bit retro with a 1960's feel to it that makes me think of Don Draper. I love the atmosphere. There are a few large tables for bigger parties to sit and eat, but I have always sat at the bar. I cannot over exaggerate how good their drinks are. Like a few of the other bars in Decatur, they make bar-tending and mixology an art rather than just throwing a splash of coke in with some Jack. I've never had a drink I didn't love there, and if you know me, that speaks more to their ability to make delicious drinks, than it does to any appreciation for alcohol on my part. There are very few liquors I can stomach, and the bartenders at Paper Plane always mix me up something that I love. I've heard great things about the food here, but have only sampled the Potato Gratin, which was delicious. If you are in the area, definitely give Paper Plane a try. You won't be disappointed.

So disappointing. Drove 30 minutes across town in the pouring rain because we heard this was a great, unique place. The location lived up to billing. The drinks did not. The service was truly bad. Hostesses were warm and welcoming on our arrival and we were seated at the bar within 5 minutes. Martin, our bartender, was brusque from the start, dismissing questions and making insulting comments to our face, and then to his coworkers within our view. We had planned on having a few drinks and small plates, but after the shockingly poor service and disappointing cocktails - neither of us liked the flavor combinations he suggested - we requested our check. Martin asked how we liked the drinks (both glasses were still full) and my date replied that it wasn't our cup of tea. Unsurprisingly, he walked away without a word of apology or offer to get us something different. If insulting service doesn't matter to you, this could still be worth your time. The ambience really is that good. But if you are looking for great food and drinks in a warm or at least non-offensive service environment, keep looking.

Overpriced and meh. Cool decor (reminded me of a scene from Mad Men). Go for drinks but skip the food. Food was oversalted and overpriced for what you get. One would think that with only 6 entrees on the menu, the entrees would be perfectly executed. Not so much.

Great place to have a drink if you're in Decatur. Love the low key atmosphere, hidden away behind Victory (another favorite). Try the "Formal Wednesday." A stand out bourbon cocktail.

Retro tucked away atmosphere. Some of the best cocktails in Atlanta (with Paul at the helm, who is surprised). Lastly, a lean but very very mean selection of well executed small to medium sized dishes (now this, I was pleasantly surprised). After a couple visits it's looking like it might become one of my favorite drinking places. Call me alcoholic but in two visits I've tried all but 2 of the cocktails on the menu. These tend towards the complex with typically 6+ ingredients going into each. The balancing of the various types of bitters, aperitifs, vermouths, and in a couple cases beers (most good cocktail bars have begun trying to do a beer drink or two, from about 2 years ago), exude care and craftsmanship rather than wild fancy. The drinks are smooth but interesting. My favorites currently are the Biggie Snugs which drank like a harmonious marriage between a Manhattan and a Dark & Stormy, and the Anchors Away, which was one of the few cases where a scotch based cocktail actually didn't taste just mostly like scotch but was pleasingly rounded. I did find that a few of the drinks leaned towards the sweet side, but not so much that it's a problem. The second edition of drinks are coming out in a couple weeks and I can't wait to try them. On top of a couple snacks and soup, you can pick from about 5~6 medium sized dishes to eat. I've had cucumber soup, trout, and smoked chicken. The flawless execution kind of blew me away. The trout and chicken were perfectly cooked, and the recipes exhibited a great understanding (not to mention hard work figuring it out!) of what tastes good. This is especially a happy find for me because I am not that into the food at Iberian Pig and Leon's, and don't necessarily want to go eat at a restaurant on the Decatur Square whenever I am in the area to drink. The feel of Paper Plane late night and early evening are completely different. It's kind of funny that before 8 pm, not only is it not that busy at all, but the people seem a little random. There's young guys in shorts and old guys looking like they just wondered in from their afternoon walk. Actually, now that I am old, I kind of like the early shift. Just saunter in and drink like a champ...less crowded than Leon's. But of course, sometimes you want that Mad Men atmosphere late night. What a great new place for this great area.

Drinks are awesome. Food is great if you like small plates to share with someone who doesn't suck. Behind the Victory sandwich bar in the alley behind Cakes and Ale. Get there early, it's kinda of a small space. Although, still a little bit of a Decatur "secret". Making it all the more cooler. Pretty sure I saw Frank Sinatra there having an old fashioned. Good job Paul! The bartenders are great, tell them what you like and if it's not on the menu, they will make something to your liking. Great addition to the Decatur cocktail scene.

If Victory is that easy-going, free-spirited chick who exudes a lively and modest charm despite being brighter and more beautiful than most, then Paper Plane is her older sister. You know the girl... She's not as attractive as her kid sis, and she tries ever so hard to make it clear that she doesn't care... by telling you constantly that there are more important things than looks, while also putting substantial effort into her own image (which, mind you, isn't unappealing, and would probably be quite fetching if not for the personality flaws behind it). Remember that time last summer, when she realized her guy friends only came to her party to see her sister rockin' that vintage bikini by the pool, so she had one too many Blood & Sands and started crying in that way that her face contorts into impossible shapes and you didn't want to look at her because of the gross secretions hanging from her mouth, but she kept demanding that you look at her when she's talking to you? She's that girl who wants everyone to know how smart and mature she is, while also putting much of her energy into erecting a persona of being fun and quixotic. Basically, Paper Plane is Zooey Deschanel (who, deceptively, is not the older sister herself). "Look at me! I'm cute! I'm fun! I'm my own woman! Look at me! Stop looking at Victory!!! Look at meeeeeeee!" It's all about image for Paper Plane. From my few experiences there, the food is overly salted and underly inspired, handed to you with a side of sanctimony and apathy in surroundings reminiscent of your eldest uncle's basement, circa 1983. If you're at least a few years older than I, then be warned that walking into Paper Plane may cause those repressed memories of the key party that ended your first marriage to come rushing back in a wave of sexual faux-liberation. You're not welcome here; you've been granted the privilege of dining with the cool kids. And don't even think of questioning the size of the lamb belly you just paid $10 for... Mary didn't have a lot of lamb, after all, so who are you to complain? No, thank you, Paper Plane. I'll have my fun around the corner because Victory isn't that girl who says she only swallows when she really likes the guy. She doesn't say anything except, "Hey, wanna have some fun?" Yes. Yes, Victory. I do want to have some fun. And some Fancy Nuts. And let's be really loud about it, while your sister and her lame friends are in the next room talking about kyriarchy and trying to drown us out with "How Soon Is Now?" on repeat. Overall, 4/10.

Good food, great service, fun cocktails. I've been there five times in the last two months, and the experience has been consistently enjoyable. It is a little loud and the prices are slightly high for what you get, but in line for most of Decatur.

I just have to say before anything that I am mystified by the many people on here raving about how it feels like you're on Mad Men--how so? What is 60s-ish and Mad Men-like about it? Whatever. I like the place a lot. We sat at the bar. Enjoyed the cheese selection (nothing crazy, but all very nice). Good beet salad. chicken was stellar (I know, chicken, but REALLY). The cocktail menu was Morrissey-themed. Made me wish I wanted the "Girlfriend in a Coma," but I really didn't so turned to wine. My cocktail-loving friend though was in heaven with some absinthe-y thing. Cozy, dark. Not a lot of tables inside, but there are some nice big booths for groups inside. I'll go back.

We definitely have a good thing here. Considering that Paper Plane has been open for five days, our experience here was near flawless. The food and drinks were not only great, they were relevant. There is something to be said for a place that caters to the movement of craft cocktails in a cozy, dimly light speakeasy-ish setting. The place was pack, but my sister, beau, and I received amazing service nonetheless. Drinks: We had some amazing cocktails. I started with a paper plane that was great and balanced, then the Writer's Block which rivaled Violet Hour's Coffee and Cigarettes (perhaps my favorite drink of all time) and finished with a sazerac. Paul behind the bar was great. Food: We started with the Spring Onion Soup. There was a spoon fight for the last bite. The beau had the short ribs which he really enjoyed. I have the Steelhead Trout ($14) with rhubarb and strawberries. It was perfect. So perfect that I decided to grow rhubarb and strawberries in the garden this spring. I was unfamiliar with Steelhead trout (and was expecting the mountain variety). However, Steelhead is similar to salmon in flavor, and very delicious. I really recommend this place. It's an affordable date spot and satisfies that yearning for a turn of the century cocktail.

I don't know if this place qualifies as a speakeasy since the entrance was clearly marked. And the vibe inside was decidedly hipster, so there's that. The drinks were delicious. The bartender knows his way around a bottle of bourbon. We ordered several small dishes to share. The cold carrot and curry soup was surprisingly good, mostly because I don't like cold soup. The smoked chicken with gnocchi was also really good. I believe this plate would have been filling for one not-overly-hungry person. The best dish of the whole night was the brussel sprouts with bacon and blueberries. It was potently savory, but I felt good about myself for eating vegetables. The bits of bacon and blueberries were interesting flavor punches. I was not a huge fan of the butternut squash and zucchini dish. I felt like the squashes could have been cooked a little bit longer. The mushrooms were also a bit plain.

Paper plane was good, like others have said. The cocktails are good but the food is better. Fresh, in season local vegetables are celebrated in appetizers and sides, such as the sweet and tangy cold carrot soup and the squash carpaccio finished with citrus and spices. We really enjoyed the smoked chicken but the bed of veggies underneath it was the star of the dish. We didn't order dessert but they sounded very interesting and outside the box. No doubt the chef is incredibly creative and really understands flavor combinations. We sat at the bar and really enjoyed our server (also bartender). He seemed really eager to mix up my off menu cocktail requests. Prices were average for the region- about 40 pp after tax and tip (though we did not eat like kings).
