The margarita was really good....the food was mediocre at best....and the service was HORRIBLE. We tried Dos Madres for the first time this evening because it was the only restaurant in the area that didn't have a ridiculous wait and it soon became clear why. Unless you are absolutely starving or in a hurry wait at one of the other local restaurants over eating here. Also, fun fact: you can order a house margarita for $8 OR you can order a small pitcher of margarita (equal to 1.5 house margaritas) for $18...I'm no mathematician but...

Food was just ok. Nice location on ponce but I don't think I was impressed enough for return visit. Outdoor seating and bar onsite.

THis is a tough location being right across Taqueria Del Sol. Everything here reeks texmex (Chi Chi's) and cheese cheese cheese. The fish tacos were very bready, limited vegetarian (unless cheese counts) selection. The service (young girl in College) was great, but otherwise I will not return. The prices were quite high for the quality of the food. The margaritas were toxic tasting. This place is a great location for a restaurant but unfortunately, most don't seem to stay too long. .....

This places food was awful. If I could give it less than one star, I would. My sister came in from out of town and we had a family dinner here. First of all; our service was crap, and really slow for an empty restaurant on a Saturday. Our food was almost inedible. I ordered a tortilla soup that was bland, and well... Sloppy for lack of a better term. My family ordered the steak and beside being burnt to a crisp was described to me as "old shoe leather." Last but not least, it was over priced as hell. We left a table full of food and our meal should've been comped. What a waste! Don't waste your time on this place, there's such better Mexican food in Atlanta.

This has been a favorite space for me in Decatur, mainly because of Garlic Thai and Sushi's tenure. I'm happy to see it occupied again after the previous tenant closed. The layout hasn't changed much if at all, so the comfy booths remain. Not a large menu, is it? And vegetarians might struggle to survive. Black bean soup, a salad and portobello tacos, I suppose. But I'm not vegetarian, so ... Chips & salsa: I'd say just about perfect chips. Salsa is flavorful but needs some kick. If they have a spicier version, it should be listed on the menu as an option. I hate asking. Guacamole: Wonderful. The addition of corn sprinkled on top probably isn't necessary for this to be a great example of guacamole, but it adds interest. And you get a goodly amount, unlike at some other places where they first fill the bowl halfway with shredded lettuce. Baja Pescado: If I understand correctly, this is the same fish you get in their fish tacos, a dish others have mentioned as being very good. In any case, the Baja Pescado really hit all the right notes with me. Perfectly prepared fish over a bed of goat cheese corn. I was full about halfway through but soldiered on, not wanting to leave a bite on the plate. This is great food. Margaritas: A little disappointing but not bad. The small glass is chockablock with ice so you don't get much margarita (particularly for the price), and they are somewhat stingy with the tequila. That said, I really don't need to be drinking the gigantic, takillya-rich margaritas of my youth. But I prefer Bone Garden Cantina's version, for example. Service was outstanding and the ambiance perfect.

We have come back here to see whether the food has improved... Sadly no, the Nachos were comparable to Stadium Nachos at best, and my husband's shrimp taco dish had the driest beans ever They use ingredients that just don't taste fresh and flavorful to me. And we waited for a good 20 minutes to get water, salsa and silver ware. I had to ask numerous times for all the above and then simply got my own napkin. I do love their patio though.

Yup this place is three stars. The food sadly isn't that good. Just not tasty mexican food :( how hard can it be. I have been here twice. The first time, the service was quite terrible, possibily the worst service i have had in a long time. The second time it was much better. I will probalby go back, just because it is a mexican restaurant. Pros: Free chips and salsa Beer Cons: small drinks

Do yourself a favor and order the daquiri. You won't get a typical, sugar loaded strawberry cup of diabeetus. You'll get a clean, simple, and delicious cocktail that will forever raise the bar on what you consider a "good daquiri". I wish they had a happy hour, I'd come back just for that! But, beyond that, their guacamole is delicious, the chips are free, and their fish tacos are the REAL. DEAL. Clean, flaky whitefish, fried but not too greasy, with the perfect amount of salsa+veggies+sauce. I wasn't as impressed with the carne asada taco, or the ceviche (the shrimp tasted pre-cooked instead of cooked in citrus juices), but its a brand new restaurant, with a caring staff and an owner that comes to visit every table to introduce himself. I think this restaurant will do well. Fingers crossed that they roll out some posole, some lobster tacos, and some happy hour action... I'll be keeping an eye on them and will be back for sure!!!

Have to say that I was a little disappointed with Dos Madres. Like many who have a poor experience with a business, I truly hope that it was a fluke or part of an off night. From the moment we walked in to departing, it was just a meal experience I wish I didn't have. When we walked in, it was a little odd to see the layout of the restaurant. I don't recall what was in place before Dos Madres, but I'm pretty sure it was a pizza place (attn: brick oven in the kitchen?) We walked up the host stand, where no one stood. After we looked around for a minute or so, a server walked up and asked if we were dining in. Yes? She was rather nice and showed us to a table. Not sure that having a host stand or area is really all that necessary. Now, I always appreciate chips and salsa as they hit the table at any Mexican restaurant, but these were pretty awful. The inconsistency was pretty astounding -- tons of chips stuck together, half were only partially cooked, others were heavy over-fried, and the flavor was pretty awful. The salsa, however, was rather nice! They do seem to pride themselves on having a great list of margaritas and other beverages. Though none of us obliged, I'm sure it would be a great idea upon another visit. For my entree, I decided to go with shrimp tacos. Since this is an item I typically wouldn't order elsewhere, I wasn't sure what my expectation should be. I wanted two tacos and both with flour tortillas. The plate came with rice and beans -- both of which were pretty good. As soon as I bit into the first taco, I knew something was off. It was like biting into all of the right texture, with zero punch of flavor from the corn salsa or what you would expect to be flavorful, grilled shrimp. The only thing I tasted was the queso blanco and it was pretty horrible. It had some seriously pungent flavor and it masked any other hopes of other flavors playing with one another. I didn't end up eating any more of them, unfortunately. My wife's tacos, however, were great! Veggie tacos with a really great crema on top. To make matters a bit worse, our server wasn't exactly present throughout our meal. She stopped by after our food was ready only to bring the check. Empty glasses aren't a huge deal, but not exactly fun. I really wanted to like this place. After having such disappointing food, I can't say I'd revisit. I really do want to give them another chance, though. Maybe if anything happens to change in the future.

Nice cold beer. Everything else I can't comment on - we have been here for an hour and still no food! Before you ask - no it's not cinco de mayo - it is a random Thursday night at 8pm.... No excuse for such slow service. .... One star because I have a cold beer. Update - we left without food and to a drive through .... Kids were bummed

Warm and friendly staff Not too authentic but the food was good overall The chips and salsa were tasty (ask for a verde salsa with tomatillo). We had the trio appetizer... Portions were tiny and the cheese was not warm (it was full of a thick skin)... But the guacamole was fresh and full of tomatoes and onions - very good! I started my apps with a grapefruit margarita - for $9 I expected a drink that packed a punch ... Unfortunately It was more like a girl fight slap- not strong at all, it was like a fizzy glass of grapefruit juice I opted to have a Dos Equis draft with my entree - the Baja fish tacos This plate went 50/50... The beans and rice were cold, old and unappealing. They were black beans stewed for hours less any salt and the rice was flavorless and hard But the fish... The fish was crisp and cooked to perfection in a beer batter. It was served on a crisp and tasty corn tortilla (flour is an option). This is the one thing that stood out from other restaurants... Try the fish ... If nothing else

Had a Scout Mob to try this restaurant... food was ok.. but was told that they no longer accept Scout Mob....WHAT???? If that's the case, then remove it from the Scout Mob site...You can't have it both ways: get me to come in because of Scout Mob and then tell me I can't use it...doesnt work that way. Going back to Taqueria Del Sol across the street.

After working up an appetite at the Toy Park, we took our two toddlers to Dos Madres for lunch. The weather was really nice so we sat on the front patio. The patio is elevated and far enough from the street that it created a really nice atmosphere for people watching without feeling too close to the street. Our server, Sparrow, was so sweet and clearly had experience with the younger clientele because she was ready for us to give our girls' orders even though we didn't know what we wanted yet. This is Decatur, so obviously the restaurant is kid-friendly and they offer a children's menu, but I was pleasantly surprised with what our kids' meals included. We ordered the quesadilla and Mexican pizza, which both came with the best fruit bowl I have seen accompany a kid's dish and some delicious (o.k., I had to try one) tater tots. Our girls, who can seriously eat, couldn't finish their meal there was so much food. Besides the great ambiance (to the extent there is an "ambiance" when you dine with three year olds). the grown-up food was really good too. My shrimp was fantastic and my husband got this insane-o nachos dish as his main course that was delicious (o.k., so I sampled everyone's order) and was so huge that he barely ate anything for dinner. The food = delicious. The atmosphere = lovely. The kids = occupied by their food enough to let us eat. The price = totally a great value for the quality and quantity of food. We will definitely be back!

Decided to NOT wait in the line at Taqueria Del Sol as it was so hot this afternoon and try Dos Madres. My 9 year old daughter liked the kids menu, good choices for her palette. My son and I both had the carnitas tacos which were as good or better than Taqueria as of late. My wife who is Vegan enjoyed her portobella mushroom tacos. The only real downsides could be easily addressed. Server was a bit slow though place was empty then she proceeded to sneeze, cough at the table. The margaritas were good not great. Ambiance and vibe was pretty sterile, perhaps we were early and things are clicking a bit later. Will try again as it's better than waiting in the hot sun across the street for 30 minutes.

Was so excited to try this place and it didn't disappoint. The salsa was flavorful and the chips crunchy and delicious. I got the Baja style tacos and I usually don't like corn tortillas but these were SO GOOD! Loved the delicate texture of the fish and the sauce was the best I've had since Jaws Taco in Maui! Also really REALLY appreciated all the family friendly details like the placemats with plenty of drawing room on the back and changing tables in BOTH restrooms! Will be going back for sure!

Loved this new Mexican restaurant in town. Things to note: - EASY parking (there's a lot right there!) - Cute atmosphere - Kid friendly - DELICIOUS free chips & salsa - Great los tres amigos - Hubby got the carnitas tacos. Amazing, especially with the pineapple. - I got the chicken fajitas. I have never had such incredibly tender chicken in my fajita before! Love the cherry tomatoes too! - Be sure to save room for the flan for dessert. It was so creamy, decadent, and perfectly paired with a bit whipped cream. The caramel flavor was AMAZING! We could tell it's a new business. At times, it took a bit of time for food to come out. But I'm sure service will get better. That being said, everyone was super friendly and helpful. Definitely a great place to check out. They have a nice outdoor patio in front that'll be nice to check out once the weather gets warmer. We'll be back!!!

High prices for very small amount of food. And what kind of Mexican place doesn't have sangria by itself? Only sangria/tequila. They forgot the meal for one of the four people at my table. There are only 4 people... How did you forget his burrito. Service was so extremely painfully slow. The man knew nothing about the menu. The food tastes good so good job cooks but service was garbage. Never coming again.

I have been excited about any restaurant opening in Decatur as of late, so I was just as excited about this new Mexican restaurant opening in a prime location downtown. It all started when we walked into a completely empty restaurant on Friday after lunch beside one guy sitting at the bar. We thought the guy was being a jerk when he tried to send his soup back and get it taken off the menu because he didn't like it. Then, our food came. Unfortunately, our chips weren't done all the way (chewy). If you can't get chips and salsa right at a Mexican place, you have issues. My fish tacos were very soggy...not crispy at all. My dining partners chicken in his quesadilla was not grilled as ordered and the bread was wet and soggy. Black beans were "meh" and the rice seemed funky. I was also disappointed to find out that, although there seemed to be a bar with a bartender...there was only 1 "house" margarita that you could order. Hopefully they get it figured out before it gets nice enough to sit on that porch.

$65.00 for 4. It was so bad, none of us ate our meals.. Don't bother!! Slow service.. Steak was tough, chicken tortilla soup was inedible. Shrimp tacos came out wrong.. And was bland. We won't go back.. Don't waste your time!

After reviewing the menu and reading the reviews, I was excited to try this place. And I really wanted to like it, but there were just too many things not right. We went for dinner, and all the tables were full. After a short wait, we were seated by the maitre'd (the manager)? As he handed us the menus, I said "This is our first visit, and I've heard great things about your salsa verde. Can we get some with our chips?" To which he replied, "No, it's only available with our Los Tres Amigos, which comes with guacamole and queso." Fair enough. We weren't hungry for all that and expressed our disappointment that we couldn't just get a side of salsa. He said "The salsa IS really good, that's why we have to charge extra for it." Um, OK, first impressions here... maybe just bring out a small sample and mention that it's on dishes x, y, and z, or bring a small side and charge for it. It just rubbed me the wrong way, especially for a restaurant that's brand spanking new and this is our first impression... Then we wait, and wait, for our waiter to show up. We hadn't received a drink menu initially, so requested one from our waiter. The menu is pretty limited - despite having a wall full of tequila behind the bar, there is one margarita option on the menu? I ordered it and it was pretty tasty, but they might want to consider expanding their options. Complimentary chips and salsa were good. Chips were light and crispy, salsa had a nice smoky flavor to it. We ordered fajitas, carne asada tacos, and portobello tacos. Salsa verde was as proclaimed - delicious. However, the corn tortillas with our tacos were really greasy, so I scooped out the filling and left the tortillas. I mentioned it to the waiter, and he said "We lightly fry our tortillas." Yes, obviously, but that doesn't mean they should be an oily mess on my plate! I liked the beans, fresh bean-y flavor, though others at the tables thought they were bland. Rice was meh. The fajitas were the best thing at the table - a large, well-seasoned portion of meat and veggies served with fluffy flour tortillas. My husband said he'd give it another try... me, I'm not so sure. Cut down on the oil and expand the margarita menu, and I'll think about it.

Great Mexican spot! Love the tacos -- fish and carne Asada are the best! The guacamole is fresh and yummy as well. Definitely a solid local spot.

We arrived here as the first customers-a party of three. The manager was super nice, and our waiter was nice as well. The problem started when the food came out. Now, I feel as though I am a Mexican food connoisseur-growing up 15 minutes from the Mexican border, but this had a lot to be desired. I have had great Mexican food in Atlanta, this is not the place. I ordered the chicken chipotle taco/ fish taco plate with rice and beans. My sister ordered the chicken fajitas. My brother in law ordered the chicken quesadila. Now again, we are the only folks in the restaurant at this point, and when my food was brought out it was wrong. Sent it back to get it corrected, and my side of beans were completely cold when my food was returned. Mind you, the kitchen help is bringing the food out to us-or waiter is speaking with the bartender and watching what is happening at our table. I took one bite of my chicken taco-it fell apart and the chicken was very chewy. Okay, tried my fish taco, same thing, cold corn tortillas. (did not appear to be hand made) and the the lime sauce just covered any taste the fish could of had. Could not finish it. The side of guacamole on my plate was turning brown also. 20 minutes later we just asked for our check. After the waiter when back to talk to the bartender for , count it, 12 minutes, he came back over and said he would bring our check right away... hmmmm. That bartender must have been super interesting! On a positive note, the manager did come over and ask us how our food was-I had nothing nice to say, so I made no comment, so I just smiled and thought to myself , I'll do a Yelp review later..

This place is just okay. The service was pretty slow the day we went. The food is decently priced (cheaper if you use the scoutmob that's available right now). The meat in the carne asada tacos was a bit tough and the rice seemed a little undercooked. The location and patio are nice.

i have been here twice. margaritas are good. chips are good. salsa and cheese dip are too watery. chicken tacos are good but overpriced. beans and rice were cold. service was slow. wish they had flan. we were a group of five and everyone ate their food, so we have that. in conclusion, i give it a generous three. management needs to work hard to turn this place around. it has a lot of potential.

I should know by now that if I order the guacamole and it is not fresh, I should just go ahead and pay my tab and leave. Lesson still not learned I guess. The waiter was great, service was prompt and friendly. The patio affords a nice view of East Ponce, The chips and salsa were good (above par), and they did not skimp on the tequila in the house margaritas. Unfortunately the food just wasn't very good. As mentioned in my opening, the guacamole was not fresh. It had that bright green color that usually means it has some kind of coloring in it to make it look more appealing, but usually just makes it look neon. It was mushy and bland. The fajitas were passable, but not great. The carnita tacos were dry and bland, with the pineapple overpowering any other flavors. If you are going to devote so much of your menu to tacos while being located across the street from Taquiera Del Sol, you just have to do better than that. Overall, we felt that it was too pricy for the quality of food we got. If we do go back, it will just be to sit on their great patio and drink margaritas.

What a disappointment. After reading about Dos Madres Cantina in the Decatur Dispatch my expectations were high. I was sorely disappointed. Yes the patio is okay but the food and service is way below par. First: the chips and salsa. Below average. Although fresh, the chips were too salty. Many chips were broken and too small to dip. The salsa was watery and bland. I couldn't tell if it was watered down or "salsa'd up". Food: I ordered one shrimp taco and one chicken taco. The shrimp taco arrived at room temperature and tasted rubbery. The chicken taco was oh-so-dry I had to drink half a glass of water. Yet picking up the chicken taco dripped orange oil onto the plate. Lastly, the service was well below average. Water glasses were not refilled. Once the food arrived we didn't see our server again until she brought the check.

I would like to give at least 3 stars but I can't. The food wasn't good at all. I had the carnitas taco plate. the pork was super greasy and there was really no flavor to the verde sauce on top. Beans were okay, just black beans but the rice again, no flavor and it was over cooked and mushy. Chips were greasy and the salsa was just okay. Service was slow and we were one of 5 tables there. Waiter was also MIA when we were done. Would not return.

First, I may be obtuse but on my visit, I couldn't find the entry door. I tried to enter through a locked door from the patio, and then another...I entered the snowball place next door and finally found the correct door. It was set up with a little hallway that led me to a man behind the counter, so I picked up a menu from the stand and asked a couple of questions about the menu. He politely told me that the hostess, (who is also server) would be with me in a moment. Unfortunately, she sat me in a booth that was so small, I couldn't breathe. Seriously, I had to get out of the booth to remove my jacket. It was much too cramped. Mexican music played at high decibels was about the only attempt at ambience...except for a large screen TV showing a kayak fishing show. I thought it strange but not entirely objectionable. The chips and salsa came promptly. The chips were cold and tasted like a supermarket variety chips and the salsa tasted more like a smoky tomato sauce. I skipped them. I ordered chicken fajitas for lunch. The chicken was cut in large chunks, much too large to eat rolled in a tortilla. The chicken tasted like it had marinated for too long. It was heavy and smoky and didn't taste much like chicken. The onions and peppers cooked with the chicken were good. It was accompanied by guacamole, shredded lettuce, cotija cheese, rice and black beans. I would have preferred refried pinto beans but the black beans tasted fine. The fajitas were simply okay. But whether or not the value and quality met the $15 price is debatable. I do want to tell you that the hostess/server made visit worthwhile. She went out of her way to take good care of me and to insure that I had an enjoyable lunch. Kudos to her! I will remember this as a good experience because of her efforts. The food, by itself, was forgettable.

Decatur has needed a good Mexican restaurant and seems we may have one! Went on their second night open for dinner. Decorated nicely with about 6 booths and 8 tables. Friendly staff and service was fine. Get free chips and salsa which are very good. Ordered the trio to start with queso, guacamole, and salsa verde for $7. All three were excellent! My partner ordered the carnitas tacos and I ordered the carne asada tacos which we shared. Both were delicious! Limited drink menu right now but my partner ordered a margarita for $8. It came in a small glass and was very good but mostly ice. I'm sure if you are a connoisseur you will be impressed with the quality of it but for us, it wasn't worth $8. We just want an affordable margarita with our dinner. We will definitely go back for the food and we'll have our drinks elsewhere!

I live in downtown Decatur, and have been looking forward to the opening of Dos Madres for several months now. As amazing as downtown Decatur dining is, we've really been missing a really good Mexican restaurant. Until now! Dos Madres lived up to what I hoped it would be. We started out with (free!!) chips and red salsa. The salsa gets a 4.5/5 - REALLY good. Just enough cilantro and just enough lime. The real winner, however, is the salsa verde. We didn't have any with chips, as it only comes in an appetizer with queso and guac (which we decided not to order), but my carne asada tacos came with salsa verde inside, and WOW, was it good! The steak in my carne asada tacos was very well seasoned and tender, and generously portioned. My tacos also came with carmelized onions (yum!), queso fresco, and the aforementioned amazing salsa verde. On first bite I had a "WHOA where is that flavor coming from?!" moment with these tacos, and it was from the salsa verde. I can't neglect the rest of the taco, though - the corn tortilla shell was fresh, doubled, and clearly homemade. And the combination sat together very well. Next time I want to try some of the mixed drinks, and the queso blanco. If they're as good as the food I experienced today, they will be very, very good. Boyfriend got chicken tacos and was also very pleased. Will be back!

Flavorful chicken tacos. The waiter recommended the carne asada tacos. I passed only because I judge all Mexican restaurants on their chicken tacos. Some of the best chicken tacos I've had in a while. They also had a yummy looking pork taco with pineapple. I'll have to try that or the carne asada next time. I would recommend this to friends. I can't wait until summer because you will definitely be able to find me sitting on their awesome shaded patio. I also had a margarita while I was there. I can see a group of my friends going out for margaritas here. It was delicious but I don't think they do any other flavors besides traditional. They have a kids menu available with coloring for the tots. You can feel that the staff is generally nice and easy going.

Finding good Mexican food in Atlanta is a challenge, especially when you've just moved back from California and have delicious options on every corner. Based on the reviews, I thought Dos Madres would be decent, but it was anything but! It started off ok with a nice smokey tomato based salsa and decent guacamole, but maybe I should have been tipped off about how the rest of the meal would be by the greasiness of the chips. They were glistening! Anyway, having not eaten since breakfast we polished off the chips. I got the Baja fish tacos and my husband got the carne asada tacos. My tacos were in a word - unacceptable! I should have returned them. First, I ordered corn tortillas which were so saturated with oil that they were crumbling. The fish was breaded (as baja style always is) but it didn't seem like they made any attempt to drain the excess oil off after they took it out of the fryer. I honestly don't even recall if the slaw and creamy sauce was tasty because the oil overwhelmed the whole thing. My husband offered to swap me one of his carne asada tacos. He had the same reaction to the fish taco. The carne asada was not good, flavorless and even though it was grilled it managed to taste oily too. I couldn't even eat it. They also used large flour tortillas so the poor carne asada and oily onions were very lonely in that gigantic tortilla. Not cute! Now for the rice and beans - which it is usually hard to screw up, but Dos Madres managed to. The beans were flavorless black beans and the rice, again, was glistening with oil. The cooks must have a very heavy hand with the oil they use, bc every last thing was soaked. Yuck! My stomach was feeling a little sick after I ate the taco so that was really all I actually ate. The service was average (at best.) We could have used some more chips for our guacamole, but the server didn't even offer. We didn't ask for more bc they were so soaked in oil, but still, its a common courtesy to offer. My water was also not refilled. Being pregnant, I didn't get a margarita. I would hope they could at least do that right?! What I've noticed about Atlanta is that you either get a poor imitation of authentic Mexican or tex-mex and honestly, I'd just rather have tex-mex done well than authentic done half-assed. Looks like the search for a decent Mexican place continues. Will probably have to explore Buford highway more and hopefully find a clean place over there.
