A quote from my sister: "There's nothing like some good American pizza that says it's Greek." I concur. We ordered the Mediterranean pizza, which was topped with gyro, tomatoes, and olives. The crust was a little thick for my tastes, but it had a nice flavor. The whole experience reminded me of eating pizza with our parents when we were children...even the smell of the place. Did we ever visit Athens Pizza? Ah, confabulated memories.

Love this place. My father is a vegetarian and has been taking me here for there vegetarian pizza since I was a kid. This place is very authentic and I've tried other menu items and they are delicious as well. This is still my go to spot for vegetarian pizza though. Other places pale in comparison.

I went here for dinner for a friend to take advantage of the 50% off Scout Mob deal. We got there pretty late for dinner, around 9:30pm. Our server was great and made really good recommendations for first timers. We ordered one of the specials- "The Dips" appetizer. We asked for extra pita, and the server brought us a full plate of pita! The pizza was delicious, especially the crust and sauce. I look forward to coming back to try the Greek fare. I will definitely be back- amazing service, awesome food, good atmosphere, good location. Not perfect, but pretty close!

Excellent Greek pan pizza. I have tasted all the specialty pizzas, and I love all of them, especially the Santorini Special (with the Feta cheese, sundried tomatoes, spinach, fresh garlic, artichoke hearts, and black olives). Stuffed grape leaves - excellent, strong flavor. This is one of my favorite family-owned restaurants in Atlanta.

Whats not to like about Athens Pizza? Arrived on a Friday 9pm. Service was kind with a bit of 'family' style. Everyone was greek-esque working there and helpful. Not oo pushy not missing in action. Got the Gyro with greek taters on the side. Yum! Filling. And a nice 10" pie with crisp tall crust and lots of topping generously added. Took 1/2 pie home and it was just as yummy cold the next day. PS - and with the 50% off online deal, the price could not be beat for this consistent quality.

    O. M. G. Athens Pizza is my new favorite pizza joint in Atlanta. My ethereal face-stuffing session kicked off with a Greek salad. I usually dog salads that comprise iceberg lettuce, but this salad got away with it because the dressing was so light, tangy and refreshing--and the tomatoes, olives, feta cheese and red onions made up for what the green roughage lacked. Now. On to the pizza. The bread itself was so buttery, soft and smooth--but not soggy! It melted in my mouth. The cheese was perfectly greasy, yet not so much that it upset my stomach or saturated my plate. The toppings, pepperoni (slightly crispy and curling upward), salty black olives and feta cheese, rocked my palate. The sweet tea was perf, too, along with the bubbly waitress: Deborah. The dessert case whispered sugary nothings into my ear when I walked past it on the route to the restroom. I was so full, I couldn't partake, but next time, I will save room for a piece of cake.

This place is terrific! A family-owned restaurant, which is an anomaly in chain-crazy, status-conscious Atlanta. I've been going here for their Athens Special Pizza for over twenty years, and even though I've moved away from Atlanta quite a while ago, this is one place I keep coming back to. Their Greek Pizza is a deep-dish delight done with feta as opposed to mozzarella, and I can say that I have never been disappointed. I've also enjoyed their wide array of sandwiches - their gyro is hearty and well done. In addition, the desserts are great - outrageously good baklava. The feel of the place is special, too. It feels a bit like a large diner (bright lights, front counter cashier, family photos, pie kiosk, etc.), along with Greek touches like the wall paintings, flags, etc. It also ideal for accomodating large groups (10-30 people), without overwhelming the place.

I just picked up my togo order .... WOW ... I had forgotten how delicious this pizza is! We got the Athens special. All the ingredients taste so fresh and even though its thick pizza its not too thick and no one ingredient overwhelms the others so each bite is just a little different than the one before. Fantastic. Been coming to Athens Pizza for over 20 years, but with all the new pizza houses, I like mixing it up ... this will be much higher up in the "rotation" from now on... Thanks for setting a high standard and then making it a tradition.

This is what I like to refer to as a good "weeknight standard". They have a really yummy steak sub, and thick steak fries. If you dig Steak Umms. you'll love this sub! The grape leaves are good too! And the baked spaghetti with a side greek salad fits the bill when I am in a hurry and don't want fast food. The service can be painfully slow, but the fare is decent enough for me to overlook it.

Some of the best food in town! I guess that's why they've been around so long. The veggie lasagna is to die for.

DELICIOUS Greek food. The Athens Special Pie is unreal good. Pleanty of other menu items to choose from too. Everyone that works there is friendly and food always arrives fast.

It's got deep roots in the neighborhood, an actual matriarch, fresh flowers, a mural of the Parthenon--plus good food every time. Try the galatoboureko, and forgive me if I spelled it wrong! Salads and soups especially good. Like the vibe, friendly, global, unpretentious yet festive. A good place. Love the age range of the clientele, newborn to ancient and all in between.

We went to Athens Pizza House last night to celebrate a friend's birthday. This was my second time at APH and I think it was well-suited for a gathering of friends. I do agree with many other Yelpers, you must get the pizza here! I got the eggplant parm (one of my favorite meals of all time), and while it was good, it wasn't great. Thankfully my husband got the Athens Special Pizza so I can have leftovers today! Even their leftover pizza is GREAT!

Though this place tends to get a negative vibe due to their atmosphere and sometimes sketchy service, and, more importantly, the way their food seems less restaurant-y and more of a lunchroom type places (they use plastic plates and have a real diner-style decor), I think in the end they get underrated. Their slice is richer than most any other place I can think of in Atlanta, so if you're looking for that Greek style rather than the more popular thin, dry slice, Athens is is the place to go. They have a pretty awesome Greek salad, that in its full size portion alone can blast your belly. Their tiramisu. Damn, their tiramisu. The last two times I've been here we ate a whole slice of it (it's huge) and then ordered another to go for the car, and ended up eating with our hands in the car. I'd come here just for that. Don't hate on Athens too much. Though not perfect, it's probably better than you hear.

Not very remarkable or worth remembering. I went here once with friends after a day of moving out of the dorm rooms and I honestly can't say anything too great about the place. It's very casual and hassle free! After a morning of of sweating, we were all looking for something to refuel for the afternoon moves. The food was alright, I think I got pasta with marinara and a side salad which was mostly green iceberg and sliced tomatoes. Oh, I do remember the house vinaigrette being really good, but ask for it on the side so you don't consume all those calories from the added sugar. You pay at the door which means the individually wrapped baklava tempt you to dig through your change purse so you can leave with flaky, nutty pastries stuck to your lips.

  • James P.

If the place is convenient for you, definitely try it, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it unless I really liked a not-too-fancy-but-good pizza and dessert (which I do). The desserts keep luring me back, particularly the galaktoboureko, but there's a bunch of other tempting stuff. The Greek pizza is the only other thing I eat here, but I really like it. I'm not a Greek pizza diva, but my guess is it could be better, but I've been totally satisfied. Service is iffy, but the big bummer is they're iffy about keeping their hours (yet another reason to avoid going out of your way).

I'm surprised more people don't eat here. Usually when we would go, it would be the older crowd. The pizza is yummy, I would always get the "vegetarian" or "mediterranian." They also have a wide variety of other things, including pastas, pita wraps, lasagna, etc. Last time I went, there was a huge Greek family having dinner there, and the place is owned by Greeks, so the food is a nice spin on authentic Greek food!

Update to my original review. Since my first visit, I have gone back and tried the pizza. It is delicious! I have to be in the mood to spend almost $20 for pizza - but it is very nice.

Athens Pizza is awesome. Why don't the other reviews on this page reflect that fact? Because those authors didn't eat the freaking pizza. Going to Athens and ordering anything but the pizza is like walking into a hair salon and asking for an oil change. Even if they perform the requested service, it's YOUR FAULT if it sucks because you ordered the wrong thing. With that out of the way, may I just say that the pizza is heavenly, and quite unlike anything else out there. I've only ever had this "Greek-style" pizza one other place and it wasn't half as good as this. The crust is distinctive -- baked crispy on the outside but slightly fluffy on the inside. There is some chewiness to it a la New York style but no one would ever mistake it for an NYC slice. The sauce has just a touch of zing and the toppings -- ah, the toppings. May I recommend the feta cheese and ground beef, browned to perfection? Go with a big crowd and enjoy the neighborhood atmosphere - on a weekend afternoon you're likely to see kids in baseball uniforms celebrating after losing that week's game, or a boisterous family post-Church gathering. John and Asiemoula Papadopolous have been running the place for the 25 years I've been going there (and since 1966 according to the menu), and one of the two of them is always there to make small talk with customers. A neighborhood treasure -- even if there are people who can't figure out what to order.

Went here for Greek food one night. Tasted no better than what you'd get out of a box or in a food court. The spinach in the spanakopita was definitely from a can.

It's definitely a family run enterprise, as you can tell from the family pictures all over the walls and the staff that's working the floor and kitchen. Athens Pizza has been around for awhile, and it has the well worn family restaurant comfort factor well established. The staff is friendly and seems like they know most of their customers. I hadn't had Greek food in months, so I decided to forgo the pizzas and subs on the menu. I had a combo plate of moussaka (eggplant and meat sauce layered in a casserole), pastitsio (beef filled pasta layered and baked together), and spanakopita. The moussaka was pretty good, but since it was a combo plate the portion was pretty small. I wished I had ordered a full portion of that. I also tried a little of the Sunday night baked chicken special, and the potatoes on the side were the best part. Big wedges of potato cooked in a little oil with a hint of lemon and herbs. Of course I had to have some baklava before I left, and it was good. Of course, I can't recall being unhappy with baklava any time or any place... All in all, not bad. Not the best Greek food in Atlanta, but it's cheap and quick in a friendly setting.

This place has a seriously creepy hospital cafeteria vibe. I felt like I was in some sort of strange cafeteria nightmare when I went. They need to renovate. They must have the same decorator as Chris' Pizza, the other weird greek pizza place nearby. We only went once, and that was enough. I don't make return trips to restaurants with big roaches crawling around on the floor. I didn't mention them to my wife because I didn't want her to be upset or get sick. The food doesn't make up for the other shortcomings. Mediocre at best.

This restaurant is on my way home and I'm not much of a cook (sigh), so I often order to go from Athen's. The food is very yummy - I love the Greek salad, Athen's spicy potatoes, and the veggie wrap. Admittedly the menu is Americanized, but that doesn't bother my taste buds. If you want to dine inside, the interior is rather cheesy (meaning tacky) with a Mediterranean wall mural, crayon artwork pinned up by the kitchen, and squirming children spilling pizza on the booths and floor. If none of this bothers you, then go on in, the food is tasty!

I had a greek salad from here once and it was ok. Also once had pizza with gyro meat on it and it was lagging. However possibly the choice of getting gyro meat on the pizza was my bad.

The only worthwhile Greek restaurant in town. However, now that I am back in Chicago, it does not deem more than 3 stars. The food was fine but nothing too exciting. Standard Greek/Italian fare but its always crowded and people seem to love this place. Pizza was too greasy for my taste.

Read some good reviews here, been craving a gyro, so it made sense to check out. In short, Athens is great. Friendly staff, reasonable prices, pretty roomy dining area (at least I think so), and the best part -the food! Comes out fast, and man is it good. I tried the gyro wrap with potatoes, simply a great lunch. Will be back.

I have been going to Athens Pizza since they first opened - a long time. We like to share an Athens Special, a pizza with a lot of toppings and a tasty crust. At times we order other menu items such as gyro platters; always some to take with us. Today however, the person I paid at the cash register was unable to do simple math. I had not seen her before today. She said, after she finally made correct change for my $100 bill, "Everyone makes mistakes." We believe she was flustered by the line of customers waiting to pay. Whatever happened with counting change back to the customer? The cash register didn't show how much she should have handed me in change ... until I asked her to use a calculator. But go for the food and you won't be disappointed. I just would like to see an inspection score higher than 80. Although I don't remember seeing a kids menu, I have seen kids there with their parents. The people who have waited on us have always been excellent at their jobs.

Athens Pizza House is located on the Northern side of Decatur near Emory but before you get to North Druid Hills heading north. It's in a shopping center across from Publix - there are other good restaurants in the area like Community BBQ and Bojanic. I've mentioned this previously, but we've been going to Athen's Pizza off and on for 20 years or so - we love the consistency of the pizza and have a special fondness for both the Vegetarian and Santorini pies. Most recently we split a small Greek salad and went for 1/2 Athens Special and 1/2 Santorini. The Santorini has very strong flavors (a bit salty so keep that in mind) so mixing in the veggie moderates the overall experience. We also like to do half-Veggie special and half-Santorini. If you're in a group it's actually a bit cheaper to get separate pies rather than splits as recently they've changed their pricing (splits start with a cheese the up charge for the two halves. They used to just charge for the more expensive pie - the change in pricing adds a couple of bucks). Over the years their salads have improved over the prior iceberg lettuce offering - they now mix in some Romain. The salad flavors are typical of Greek pizza joints - very classic oil and vinegar with feta, red onion, ripe tomatoes and Greek olives. This is one of those foods if done right bring back the serendipity of first having such as a kid. Athens certainly brings back the nostalgia. Athens has also replied to changes in what people like in beer, offering Sweetwater 420 on draft which I don't mind at all. If you have room, Athens also offers slices of those gigantic cakes you see in Greek diners - there are also occasionally specialty desserts like chocolate rats (you have to see these to understand) and their baklava is well made, with real honey instead of that sickly sweet corn-syrup stuff you find elsewhere. The last time I reviewed, I would have given them 4 stars - call this a 3.5. I'm happy to say that the last two times we went to Athens, the experience was much better, as they seem to have their act more together. The new pricing for the half-half pies is a bit disturbing but I can live with the extra bucks. (longer review on my food blog)

Yall know I'm a pizza fanatic! I've passed this place countless times to meet clients & I finally decided to stop in. Very mom & pop like restaurant. Very chill & relaxed. Staff was warm & welcoming. They had a case of nothing but sweets! But I resisted temptation(I may not next time). I ordered a small spinach pizza. It was delightful! Very light crust. Mozzarella was fresh & it blended perfectly with the spinach! This is a must stop when in Decatur!

I had been going to Athen's Pizza for about ten years between 2003 and 2013, before leaving the Atlanta area. It only occurred to me now to write a review. The food was (and I'm sure still is) wonderful. I loved the lentil soup and dolmas appetizer. I would go there often, just to hang out, have a snack and read a book. Mrs. Papadopoulos was always very kind to me. I was truly impressed by her graciousness - authentic Greek, if I'm not mistaken. About ten years ago, I dropped my change purse in the parking lot. There was $60.00 in it. It was a large part of my student's budget at the time, and foolish of me to carry around like that. When I went back there, I asked the manager if anybody had turned it in and somebody had done just exactly that!! I know it is late, but Thank you to the wonderful person/customer who did that. And I think such an occurrence could only happen in such a place. I very much look forward to visiting while I'm in town.

So it seems that here in ATL, everyone is all about the napoletana-style pizza. Sure, Antico and the others are good. In my world of pizza dreams, I want Greek Pizza...I want pastrami pizza! I made it my mission when I moved here to find amazing Greek Pizza--MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! I can't stop thinking about this pizza! I am so ready to go again. I definitely love to start out with a Greek Salad...the medium Greek salad is a great split for 2 pre-pizza. It is a simple salad wrought with pleasure. The only way it could have given me more pleasure is if it came with more than just 3 calamata olives--the best part and there were only 3! Once that piping hot pie of sexiness hit the table, I was in love. The way I do my pizza...pastrami, tomato & extra sauce. For those of you that are skeptical, pastrami is the perfect topping! Just try it! They are probably the only pizza joint around here that offer it as a topping but not unusual in the Greek Pizza world. My server tried to steer me away from ordering extra sauce because they like to warn folks that it might make the crust soggy--useless warning--the extra sauce had my toes curling in saucy joy! Athens Pizza opened in Decatur back in 1977 by the Papadopoulos family. Don't you just love family run restaurants that have been around forever?? It's like they grow up with you! Just FYI, they offer a coupon on the website for 10% off that you can print.

After reading the reviews decided to give it a try. It's a large restaurant with Greek decor, the decor was over the top. Waited a few minutes to seated and had a booth. The waitress took about ten minutes before our order was taken. We got a small pizza, souvlaki and spanakopita. The souvlaki came with lettuce which is not the Greek way of serving it. It was ok ok and tasty. Pizza was average, but spanakopita was good. The best part was the cold beer. Service was to slow for lunch time, the decor needs to be toned down and clean the place our booth was torn and dirty. Will not go back.

My friends made me try this place and I'm so glad. Really authentic Greek food! And they have a coupon online. Make sure you print it first though. Very homey and quaint. I'm not the biggest fan of Greek food, but I'd come again.

I've been here a few times and I think I'm done. The food is very expensive for the amount and quality you get. We got the gyro platter with 3 meats (chicken, gyro meat, and pork souvlaki) which comes with Athens potatoes or fries. We also ordered a side of feta fries and a piece of spanakopita. The spanakopita was soggy and bland; it was obviously microwaved to be hot which turned the puff pastry into mush. The feta fries were cut-up roasted potatoes with a drizzle of feta cheese sauce. Since we were expecting something more like French fries, we got Athens potatoes for our side with the platter. Unfortunately it was more of the same potatoes, minus the tiny drizzle of sauce. The souvlaki was so dried out as to be nearly inedible and the chicken was very burned. The gyro meat was well seasoned and tasty. Service was a bit lacking; it was a bit busy and I think they were short staffed. Overall we waited too long and paid too much for food that left a bad taste in our mouth (literally). I don't think I'll be back again.

This place was very good. Our server was outstanding. Diner party for five on a Saturday night after a visit to Emory Hospital. Quick, easy parking and seating. The restaurant was about 75% full. Salads first, then our food came out after about 15 minuted after we ordered.

I mean, I hate to give bad reviews, but someone has to do it to bring down this ranking. It's pretty much an abomination that a place like this is 3.5 stars on yelp. I don't remember much of anything about the service. People there seemed nice enough. But no level of service could overcome what is coming out of that kitchen. Food highlights: Atlanta is not known for it's great pizza, but this is some of the worst, if not the worst, pizza I have had in my 7.5 years living in this town. The dense crust is covered by flavorless cheers and what I can only believe is sauce from a can. As far as the toppings, I had sun dried tomatoes that had the consistency and color of sun dried tomatoes, but that's where the similarities ended. They we're totally devoid of any flavor at all. I asked for ranch dressing to try to choke down this pie, and received what must have been a Sysco product. Gelatinous like mayo, with flecks of dark matter, as opposed to having dairy ingredients with recognizable herbs. I could go on, but I'm really not here to disparage anyone, just take this place for what it is. A cheap place with cheap food made by people that are probably just trying to pay their bills. You get what you pay for.

All I had was the spanakopita, but it was soooo good (I'm salivating just thinking about it)! I devoured it shortly after leaving and then turned back to stock up on more. If the rest of their food is as good the spanakopita, then they deserve 5 stars!

My colleagues and I met here for a farewell party before I moved, and the service was horrible. There was a table of about 10 of us and the food seemed to come in waves or just whenever the kitchen decided to send something out. I can assure you that no more than three people had their food at the same time and the result was that some were eating appetizers when others were eating entrees and others were still waiting for their food when some were eating entrees. It was a cluster fuck. The food was Greek, pizza and pasta, and was tasty, but service was a mess. Two of my friends got their food so late that the kitchen just comped it.

Hands down 'THE' BEST GYRO IN ATLANTA!! Ever since I had one yesterday, I've been wanting to drive across town for another one. Sure wish I was out that way more often. I will def make this a dedicated stop anytime I'm in the Decatur area for sure. Just delicious!! **Wish I would have taken a pic. Next time I will and I'll upload! ;-)

If you're a fan of Greek Italian, this is your place. This family owned business has some of the best tasting food within this category. I've had everything from Gyro's to Lasagna, Chicken Parmigiana, Grilled Chicken and more. Very ideal for families with children. Seating is quick, even when there's a line. Service is pleasant and the price is decent. Most importantly, you will get full and if there's something you don't like, they'll make it right.

Consistent. Friendly. Amazing. What more can I say? Despite what you may have read from the naysayers, I will tell you Athens Pizza is home of -the best- Greek food and some of the best pizzas in the Atlanta area. They have been in business forever and my parents say that the food has always been great. Seriously, when I can take my grandmother out to a restaurant and she says 'this is just how I remember it' - you can believe the hype! I recommend the Santorini Special Pizza (do yourself a favor and add extra artichoke), Gyros (platter and wrap) are always made just right, get the Athens Potatoes as your side. The "Large Greek Salad" is enough for two/three, and the dressing is fantastic. The Mediterranean Pizza is as close to a Swedish style kebab pizza you will find in this area. If you are feeling up for desert, grab a Chocolate Mousse Mouse - Seriously. Diabeetus. Amazing, amazing diabeetus.

More than a Pizza Joint Athens Pizza has been around for a very long time but I only recently got around to trying it. I guess that I always figured that it was a pizza joint. But they really are a full service restaurant with a thorough menu of Greek and Italian regulars. The Greek salad was nice. The veal parmesan was pleasant, if rather unremarkable. I didn't really care for the lasagna. They use some kind of sweet cheese (mascarpone) in one of the layers and the sweetness overwhelms the dish. The rice pudding dessert was very nice. I would go back and try the pizza. And Athens could be a regular place for a satisfying, if not necessarily gourmet, meal.

Disappointed. I've been nagging my husband for a month to come back, and was totally let down. We ordered the gyros appetizer, meat balls and spaghetti, baked spaghetti, and vegitatian pizza with pastrami. The pizza holds up. If its close by, its good pizza, but everything else was a disaster. The baked spaghetti was bland and watery. The meatball and spaghetti was a notch better, but still not that great. And the gyros appetizer was OK. The interior is nothing special. Really let down by this trip and don't think I'll be back. So sad.

Athens Pizza is a family owned and operated pizza restaurant that has been in Decatur since the 70s. It's a neighborhood pizza joint that has remained popular among locals all these years because of its good food, friendly service, and reasonable value. This is both a casual Greek and Italian eatery where you can order gyros and moussaka or pizza and pasta. On the Greek side, apps include "Athens potatoes," which are basically lightly fried chunks of potato, pita bread with cheese and/or hummus, fasolada (Greek bean soup), Greek lentil soup, and Greek salads. Entrees include the aforementioned moussaka (eggplant dish with bechamel sauce) and pastitsio (ground beef dish with bechamel sauce). If you're looking for something lighter, they also have a variety of pita wraps. You can build your own pizza or choose from one of Athens' specialty pizzas. Their specialty pizzas have a definite Greek spin, using ingredients such as Kalamata olives, gyro meat, and feta cheese. I'm a fan of the "Athens Special," which consists of feta, ground beef, sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, onions, and green peppers. The pizzas are deep-dish, thick-crust style. The toppings are generally fresh. I like how the veggie toppings are more on the raw side than cooked. While there's nothing too fancy about it, I find the pizza here to be soft and satisfying overall. The pizzas come in four sizes: 6-inch, 10-inch, 14-inch, and 16-inch. The 6-inch is like a personal pan pizza. The 10-inch is typically good enough for two people. The gyro meat is pretty tasty. It's a combination of beef and lamb that has been flame-broiled on a spit. No matter how you order it, on a pizza, in a wrap, or as a platter, it's good. The strips of meat are tender and flavorful. The restaurant itself is basic with small booths and tables. There's usually ample seating inside. While the parking lot is big, finding a space can be difficult on nights when an event is going on nearby. You can pay for your meal at the register, which makes it easy for separating checks. Athens Pizza is located next to the strip mall with The Nest, Bhojanic, Community Q BBQ, and Pyng Ho Chinese Restaurant.

Great food and great service! I ordered the 6" pizza and Greek salad. Everything prepared to perfection. The freshest salad I've ever had! And the baklava is to die for. Can't go wrong with this choice!

We visited Athens Pizza on January 15, 2014 when traffic was backed up for hours, so I'll give them some slack when it came to service. I wonder though, if the senior wait staff is always as crabby (at least towards their less-than-senior staff) as they were when we were there. One guy had a scowl on his face that was scary, and I was glad I didn't work there. However, I'm not giving any slack on the food. I ordered a six-inch "all meat" pizza pie which consisted primarily of the pie part. The crust was way too much relative to the very small portion of meat (?) that was on it. I've never seen ground beef so ground, and I can't even remember what else was on it as there was so little it was so unmemorable. My companions both ordered the gyro wrap platter. The lamb looked more like beef jerky and the "wraps" were basically oversized pita chips so it was virtually impossible to wrap anything. (Check out the photos of this platter - the actual dinner ordered unfortunately looks just like the photo) The sauce was good which is fabulous if you had a craving for sauce for dinner. I do recommend the Captain Wafer crackers that came before the meal...I ate all those.

Favorite pizza restaurant for 35 years. It doesn't get any better than Athens. I've never had a bad meal here, and whenever I'm back in Atlanta, I pop in

We ordered our food to-go, and it smelled so good in the car we couldn't wait to dig in when we got home. My husband got the chicken fingers and fries, which tasted very good, the chicken fingers were cooked perfectly. I got the greek style oven baked chicken which came with green beans and potatoes. The chicken was VERY dry, overcooked and not so great. I picked at it, and my husband ate the rest. The green beans were yummy, but the potatoes were bland and oily. We also got the spinach pie, which was ok. In the past I've had their mousaka and pastitsio which was VERY good. Their greek salads always hit the spot, and their meditterranean pizza is delish. Next time we visit (we live down the street) I plan on ordering what I know is good--the pizza and salad :)

Awesome family owned restaurant. The service can be a bit slow during lunch so I always try to get there a little early or after 1:00. The Greek potatoes are incredible.

This place is located in the restaurant strip mall close to our home. It is very crowded during weekends. I liked everything I tried- gyros, Greek potatoes and Greek salad.

Gyros with extra meat! Around the Decatur area, this is the best Gyro place. As for the pizza, they've got great crust and good toppings. The prices are good and its locally owned. All great things.

This is a preliminary review as I have only been there once (but intend to go back) and tried only a couple of things. I thought I should write a review nevertheless because I did find the place promising and because I am the self-proclaimed Greek-food authority around here. First the place is easy to find, there is plenty of parking around, and is fine in term of decor (not TOO many greek flags and Santorini pictures). The service is very good. But then you got to go up to the counter and pay. What's up with that? This is so 80's Greek dinner... Another little remark: the Greek wine list is pretty good (not excellent but good - try the Moschofilero, if you want to get a taste of a Greek grape) but served in tacky overfilled wine glasses. To the food: I got the avgolemono soup and the spanakopita app (two triangles). Great for lunch or light dinner. They were both pretty good. In fact the spanakopita was VERY good. I thought that their feta cheese was a little too salty but most people don't consider this a problem. I also ordered a the moussaka + pastitsio plate to go (for my sig other at home). I had one bite from the moussaka and it was very good. But the bf told me that the pastitsio was not as good. The salad which came with that plate was a sorry excuse for a Greek salad (lots of lettuce, a couple of thick cut tomato pieces and some feta sprinkles), but the dressing was very good (I used it to make my own salad at home). The pizzas that my friends got looked very good (and they liked their taste). I would like to try some other dishes next time (like roasted chicken and potatoes and youvetsi). But I will not try anything with gyro (I know it'll be bad). PS. Another reviewer said that Greeks know their cheesecake? No, actually we don't. Cheesecake is not only a non Greek recipe, it is also very foreign to Greek cusine and Greek taste buds, so if other Greek restaurants make a mean one, that is probably a talent unrelated to any Greek source

    (3)
  • Maggie W.

Nooooope. Not going back. Kinda gross. Dessert first: in my experience, Greeks know their cheesecake. This? This was pretty upsetting. The quality of the cheesecake was good; not too sweet, which is absolutely perfect! But they had this stale, sponge-cake-like base on this cheesecake that almost made it totally inedible. The strawberry concoction tasted way too tangy and possibly pretty old. Garlic bread with cheese: yikes. LAWD no. Even 2-minutes-ago fresh, the bread was soggy and generic, the cheese wasn't melted to a hot enough point and got kind of congealed and gross in no time at all. The marinara with it was pretty good, but I got an overall sick feeling looking at the garlic bread, and an even worse feeling eating it. Cold Cut Sub: the only halfway-decent thing I ate here. Quality of the meat was okayish, other toppings were okay, bread was meh. An edible quality of food, but not worth eating again. The service was alright, not special. The guy at the takeout counter was really nice, the girl at the checkout was less nice. Whatever. Had I not eaten here with a Scoutmob, I would be pissed at having spent 20 bucks on lunch that was bare-minimum okay. Do not love.

  • AR C.

I have eaten here several times and enjoyed it. However, I have always had pizza. This time I ordered spaghetti with marinara sauce. I was served a large bowl of mushy spaghetti with a small spoonful of sauce. I did not enjoy it at all. Although I like their pizza, I like others more.

Athens Pizza in Decatur is one of my very favorite restaurants on the planet. For real. Now, before you read further, let me tell you that much of my LOVE for Athens can be traced to the wonderful dates my husband and I had there in the 80s (ahem!) when he was courting me. We even went to Athens for a late lunch on our WEDDING day. :) Lots of wonderful memories. Athens is family owned and very traditional. Great Greek dishes (the best gyros you'll ever have, wonderful Greek salads, baklava, etc.) My favorite thing to eat there, by far, are their pizzas. The crust is always PERFECT - not too thick, not too thin - a nice crispiness to it, but soft as well. The toppings are always generous and delicious. Every other pizza PALES in comparison. Love this place. I've gone from eating there as a starry eyed teenager, to a middle aged woman going back with my husband and our 2 (almost grown) kids. I look forward to one day introducing my grandchildren to Athens. (And by the way - we no longer live near Athens Pizza - but it is ALWAYS worth the drive!) Wonderful!

This is a neat place, kind of "old school". The owner (lady) is always at the front of the restaurant to say hi. Service is usually good. The food is a bit more Mediterranean/Grecian than Italian but there are several Italian items and pizzas on the menu. The desserts are plentiful and prices reasonable. Sometimes the service is a bit slow but it really depends how busy it is, on a regular night the service is great, busier nights you may have to wait a bit. Sort of like a quick visit to Greece for dinner, I like it.

The food was 4 stars but the service and employees were 0 stars so I'm giving this place 2 stars. First the good news - the pizza is wonderful - thick crust, great topping choices, and fresh cheese. The spanikopita was also a winner. And the baklavah was crazy good as well. So why only 2 stars? The wait staff was horrible - on their cell phones texting while my water glass was empty and I was waiting for more napkins. The restaurant was filthy - used napkins and cracker wrappers on the floor, food on the walls, window blinds, and the floor - and even though the restaurant wasn't busy at all, I saw a waiter and a waitress grab-assing and goofing around instead of picking up the trash that was on the floor or bussing tables. My waitress was counting her tips and drinking coffee and never once came to the table during our meal (only at the end to ask if we wanted the check yet). If the owner and management don't do something to train the wait staff this place is doomed.

Since 1977, Athens Pizza House has been a local (family owned and operated) favorite, serving up hand-crafted pizzas, pastas, desserts and other goodies that are seasoned with a healthy portion of love and caring. Prices are very reasonable, and this restaurant is frequented by a wide variety of locals, Emory students, families, and fans of Greek dining. I am a fan of the Pastitsio (how can you go wrong with beef, pasta, and bechamel sauce?). And the Mediterranean Pizza is a winner (gyro meat on a pizza FTW). I want to try the Athens Special. While you're there, say HI to the Papadapoulous family. They'll take good care of you.

Mamma Mia! Oh wait, that's Italian. I meant to say To hóverkráft mu íne gemáto hélia! Whatever that means. When I was in college, this used to be one of my favorite places. Then again back then, the only pizza places we had were Pizza Hut, Papa John's, and other similar quality pizza chains. Eating a Greek pizza was unique enough to make it a nice treat. I'm glad it's still popular as ever. It was packed on a Friday night. Unfortunately, the pizza was not good. I don't think it has change much since my old days. A lot happened in the Atlanta pizza scene. A ton of great places opened up, my wallet grew fatter, and my palate for pizza changed. Unfortunately, Athens Pizza hasn't changed with the times. It tasted like some regular, old Pizza Hut style pizza I was accustomed to eating during my Georgia Tech years. The pizza is thick, like a Pizza Hut deep dish style. The crust felt like the same quality. The ingredients tasted okay. It didn't really special anymore after all these years. But hey, that satisfies a lot of people. It's not my favorite type of pizza though. They do offer huge plates of Gyro. I can't review those because it has been a long time for me since I last ate their Gyros. The people are still nice as ever though. I'll give the food 2.5 stars. I would not come here to eat the pizza again unless I have no choice. But I'll round up to three because of the service and the memories.

We used to come here all the time when we lived in Decatur, GA. We still go every time we visit Atlanta. I have would have given this restaurant 5 stars with my eyes closed before, but the place is in urgent need of better up-keeping. Luckily, the food is still very good. The pizza is delicious, the house salad great, and the grape leaves my favorite. The pasta dishes are also good. The spinach with feta pie is a must. The eclairs, my favorite dessert, seem to have changed for worse. They seem frozen or maybe are kept too cold. I still miss seeing the original owners with their great energy greeting people at the door and ensuring that everything was perfect. Hope the current owners take note of the Yelp reviews and improve the place before it is too late.

I love a family place-especially when you recognize the mama from menu, it's like spotting a celebrity. I was surprised at how tasty the pizza is-thick, crusty chewy balance on the dough, with a nice tangy sauce. I have been repeatedly disappointed with dried out gyro meat and stale ingredients in the salads. The worst thing is, that the salads taste great at first. Then halfway through, I find the gross old thing. Last time, the lettuce was slimy. This time, I got a mushy tomato with a rotten spot on it. This is not a one time problem. Next time I will remember...not to go again. Cheers~

Solid pizza place - good for a lunch run if you're in the area. I got the Santorini Special (6 inch version) - veggies were fresh and flavorful. I like my crust a bit thicker than most, so they won marks for that, and it tasted made to order - I hate it when the crust is pre-baked and then just re-heated with toppings on it.. My small Greek salad was a little on the watery side, but the feta was delicious. I wouldn't call the service friendly, but they were efficient, which I appreciate in a time crunch. I would go back.

I have been eating here for many years and this place is consistently good. Perhaps not great but certainly good. Perhaps it really deserves 3.5 five stars but this particular visit was quite enjoyable. Went here with my buddy after walking out of both Community BBQ and Capozzi's. Started off with a pitcher of Sweetwater 420. My buddy and I both loved looking at the hot Russian waitress while drinking beer and waiting for our food. One the food arrived, it was great. The small Greek salad was served before the pizza. The pizza was very, very good. As Mike D said in his review: "the Mediterranean Pizza is a winner " I concur.

Torn on this place. I ordered the gyro platter, my friend ordered the Mousaka and Pastitsio combination. We ordered spanakopita too. The spanakopita tasted like it was microwaved. The taste was good, but it was soggy. My gyro platter was really good although gyro meat portion size was small for the price you pay. I tasted the mousaka and pastitsio too and it was a little bland and honestly tasted like it was in the microwave too. Total bummer but not horrible. Most people I saw had the pizza and I kick myself for not trying it so I will be going back to try it and will update the review.

I feel bad giving this place 1 star but let me explain. The service is friendly and the decor is nice but the food is just bad. I ordered the shrimp linguine pasta which came with a salad. The pasta was way too overcooked and the tomato sauce tasted like Ragu (which I hate). The salad was also clearly not fresh. Honestly, it tasted like the cafeteria food I was served in public school. My friend ordered one of their special pizzas but I forgot what it was called. It had some artichokes and mushrooms on it. It was alright but I honestly had better frozen pizza from Krogers. This place is about a 1.5. I want to like it but the food is just too terrible.

Stopped to try a pie with a 50% off Scoutmob (yay!!) and ordered Spanakopizza. Oh. Sweet. Jesus. DELICIOUS!!!! The crust on this pizza was so light and fluffy, it was like a pastry! All the different cheeses - ricotta, Parmesan,... Oh my god. It was like spanakopita in pizza form, with extra extra cheese. Of all the pizza I've had in my life, this is definitely in the TOP THREE! Go to Athens Pizza. Get the Spanakopizza.

Went on a Tuesday night, for dinner, Very Good server (Ashley). Had the baked spaghetti, which was very good My friend had the Lasagna, which was very good Salads were bland, and where a bit skimpy, on the salad dressing Have had the pizza (take out) before which was good but a bit pricey Interior Decor could use some updating. Felt like being in an dining hall Will be returning soon.

One of my favorite restaurants. I have been going to Athens Pizza House ever since I was a kid-- Back when it was at it's previous location in the shopping center next door. The restaurant has a very authentic feel to it. It's lighting could give it better ambience if the lights were dimmer and candles on the tables. But, if you rather have a family style greek restaurant-- this is your spot! We order take out at least once a week. My husband loves their greek pizza. But, I am more into Italian pizza if I get pizza--I like tomato sauce. So, I don't get pizza here. Gyro with extra tz sauce is my vice! We have never had a mix up on our order before until last night. I ordered extra tz sauce for two gyros--ended up they didn't put ANY tz sauce on... I was devistated! I am sure they would have corrected if we called. But, we didn't care to take the drive. We will just have to check our order before we leave next time. There tz sauce is the best I have ever eaten! P.S. I don't know how to spell the tz sauce--so tz is what I call it!

Decent food, good portions, good prices. The place is huge inside and tackily decorated with frames and flags of the world. I like to challenge myself and see how many countries I can match to the flags. It's a few breakfast dishes away from being a diner. This place is pretty big and it's never empty -- even at 4pm on a Sunday. There are some old presumably Greek people filling a few tables every time I'm there. The lot is a bit of a pain to park in, but it's not as bad as the neighboring lot (Pyng Ho, Community BBQ, The Nest, etc). A solid three-star place that has some dedicated followers that ensure it will be around for quite some time.

Athens Pizza is a favorite of my boyfriends from childhood so when we were in town, a trip was necessary. The decor is very typical Greek restaurant cheesiness. I was worried about the cleanliness of the place but upon further inspection I was satisfied. My mom and I split a Greek salad and the Santorini pizza which was good. The Greek salad was standard and the pizza was good. My boyfriend really enjoyed his ground beef and cheese pizza. Overall, if you are in the area I would recommend Athens Pizza House. It was a good change of pace place for lunch.

Not a bad little place. I never expect much from many pizza places and all I had was a salad so I cannot give a good impression of the food. The layout of the place is nice and it seems they are not picky about their atmosphere. I would really love to try there pizzas.

This place tastes good for the first few bites, but it gets old really quickly. For example, the Athens Potatoes are good when they first come to the table, but after eating about three of them, you realize how salty and greasy they are. There are a lot of options on the menu, but nearly everything is really heavy. The good thing is that most entrees can feed two people and are relatively cheap, so you get a lot of food for your money. The eggplant parm is the best thing that I have had at Athens Pizza, and was served along with a side salad and a generous portion of spaghetti on the side for only $9.95. I would recommend it if you are in the area and are really hungry, as the food is decent and cheap and the service is fast. However, if you are looking for somewhere to go for a high quality meal and good ambiance, go somewhere else.

We split a 6" Santorini Pizza just to give the pizza a try. The toppings were great and generous for a 6" size. I'm not a fan of the crust. Tasted like plain bread to me. We both ordered Gyros and I thought they were good. I would go back for the Gyro.

Stopped here one sunday, after having their former location cater an event I attended. Ordered a gyro wrap and my girlfriend ordered a calzone. The food came out within 14 minutes. The waitress was really friendly and gave us great service. the only grip is the gyro came out just warm instead of hot! The cheese wasn't't melted like I would have liked. Also the "teritazzi" lacked flavor and next time I will subsitute with ranch dressing. My girl said the calzone good. She had no complaits. Definitely will go back.

Sorry Mama....but you guys have slipped well below tolerance. The same snotty guy seats you, throws menus on the table does the about face and goes back to sit at the family table. Mr Personality he's never been....unlike Mom & Pop K. The food today...the waitress forgot my wife's spinach pie to come wih her Lemon, Rice & Chicken soup. The meatball parm looked like the dish of yor...but geezus, you guys can cut back on the filler and bread crumbs; the meat-a-balls...dey fallah apart and splash da sauce on my nize clean shirt. My wedge o' bread was less than expected....another failure to long lost memories of a great establishment. You can't go wrong with the Athens Pizza House greek salad and the customary basket of cracker...always the right temp and good for anyone on the lite side of dining. However, the bill arrived...the gal offered to go get the spinach pie that she forgot...we politely declined. Lukewarm coffee in the customary cup and saucer and the non-customary napkin to soak up the spilled coffee from the hurried delivery and little issues with liquids and Newtons law. Again, it's a sad way to see a family established biz falter from being over capitalized from all the assets the family has rightfully accumulated; when the property and buildings bound back in value and the business still thrives...it's a business no longer needed to struggle, sacrifice or go the extra step any longer. The same guy that sat us was back at the register to take the check, ask for the amount without any banter, chatter or opinion....he just doesn't seem to give a damn. That's allright, I'm starting to read reviews here in which long time customers appear to likewise, "no longer give a damn." And that really is a shame. Time marches on. Patriarchs grow older and tired after many years of sweat and service....their progeny just seem to no longer "give a damn"....and that's just not Mamma's way of doing business.

This is comfort food for a great price. I got the Santorini pizza and added Bacon. The service was fantastic. We got the greek salad as an appetizer and the dressing is AMAZING. I recommend dipping the pizza crust in the salad dressing. That is all.

Best spanikopita of my life! Seriously, I keep thinking about it. Besides that everything else I've had here is pretty average. My bf got the gyro with greek potatoes and the potatoes were dry and flavorless. A friend got a calzone but was disappointed at the scarcity of meat. The baklava was just ok. Tasted more like a cinnamon poptart than genuine baklava. No chopped nuts. Prices aren't too bad if you get pizza or a Greek salad, but some things on the menu were a little overpriced. It gets a third star because this is a family owned and family run restaurant.

sadly this place is really not trying. Musaka is supposed to be a complex dish that combines the layers of meat and eggplant where the flavors cross in to each layer and make it so yummy. the dish i got was clearly a microwaved frozen dinner. so was the spinach pie. they were piping hot on the outside and by the time i was able to put it in my mouth it was rubbery. the food was very bland. the Greek salad was also boring without much to it. would expect more veggies. poring oil on it and a couple of olives does not make it greek.

My family has been coming here for a long time, and I've grown partial to their pizza, pita, and veggie wraps. We have been going here for over 10 years, and I've rarely been disappointed and only have had one run-in with a rude waitress ever...that's pretty good in my book. The pizza is a staple, I like the way the potatoes are lightly seasoned, the the salad dressing on the Greek salad is some of my favorite dressing ever, though I'm not sure why. It's nice to see the family in a restaurant that is obviously very close to their hearts. I've gone there for years and I will continue you to as long as the service remains friendly, the food great, and the atmosphere confronting. Oh and the place is good for parties and big groups.

The pizza is interesting. It's a thick crust, but it's not heavy. If you prefer a thin crust this is not the pizza for you. I liked it, but wouldn't order it again. The eggplant Parmesan is nice, but not as flavorful as the one at Bambinelli's. Still, not greasy or heavy. The Athens potatoes are a fun way to start off your meal. Our toddler loved them. Service is friendly and fast. A nice neighborhood joint.

Once good, now bad... Food: Here's the scoop on Athen's. I have been eating at Athen's for about five years. The food here was once very good and could always be counted on to be fresh, BUT...The past few months the food has gotten really bad. I usually order either their Veggie sandwich with Athen's potatoes, their steak sandwich with athen's potatoes, their Lasagna with sausage added or their spaghetti with extra meat sauce and extra sausage. Their sausage was once spectacular, they once made their sausage several times daily, but in the past few months they have started cooking their sausage the day before (dare I say 'leftovers?) and when I go for dinner (on the next day) the sausage is hard and dried out, it's worse than chewing on leather, seriously. Pasta is usually cooked well and their sauces are nothing special, but they are acceptable. They have started putting so little dressing on their salads that you're basically eating a salad without dressing. Their food has gone from nicely seasoned to bland. Overall I would give their food a 2/5 (Sausage 1/5) Atmosphere: The place is decorated with small flags around the perimeter of the room and they have some decorative things which makes it okay, it's definitely not fine dining, but it's not a dive either. However, the place usually hasn't been cleaned very well, seats and tables are wiped off but there is dirt and dust on window sills, plants (fake) and between the seats and the walls. I would give cleanliness 2/5 Service: Service can range from excellent to horrible. I always request Angelo's zone because he is the best waiter they have, in my opinion. He always gets the orders right, always refills drinks promptly and rarely has a bad day . As far as bad goes, one particular waitress name comes to mind. She has messed up my orders, taken forever to refill drinks, eaten while working (which I think is disgusting and probably a health code violation) and generally has a "I don't give a $h1! attitude." (in my opinion). I would rank general service at 2/5 ( I would give 3/5 except for that one crappy waitress), but I give Angelo a 5/5. Summary: Overall, this place has gone way downhill. The food has gone from acceptable to "I don't want this nasty crap". Their sausage was once the best items on their menu, now it's the worse. Service ranges from excellent (Angelo) to horrible (there's a few other names I could mention). I give them 2/5 because because their food has become nasty and their average service leaves much to be desired. As I 'was' a very frequent customer at Athen's I decided to mention the sausage issue and a few other issues to the 'manager' (some pregnant lady with a russianesque accent) and she simply gave excuses and said there was nothing wrong with the way our food was prepared. My roommate and I simply told her we would not be back because of these issues and she had nothing to say. She charged us full price for the meal and we left. Athen's has lost three customers for life due to the recent development of bad food prep practices and a manager that doesn't seem to care what their customers complain about.

The pizza here is pretty good...not as good as Mellow, but better than most. In fact, my only complaint about it was the crust. They only offer one type of crust, and it's not very good. I prefer thin/whole wheat, but theirs is thicker and boring white bread. The toppings, however, were quite fresh and tasty. Outdoor seating is nice...service was good.
