In my late teens, I used to spend a lot of time up in Cumming. Hell, I used to even cook at a restaurant up there (and yes, it still exists!). Long story short, I knew a lot about the area. Every day I would drive to work, I would pass Gasthaus. All I knew was that it was a German restaurant. I always heard good things, but never tried it- as I knew NOTHING about it. For all I knew, it was a house with a German logo and a parking lot. My sister told me she ate there, and loved it. A current employee of mine (and lifelong Cumming resident) told me about it- they both enjoyed it. Finally, this past weekend- I had the chance to go there! The funny thing is, it was probably one of the closer places to me (it's only 4 exits up GA 400 for me, as for most Yelpers in attendance traveled about 7+ exits)- and my lame ass was still late. Thankfully, there was a spot for me, in the corner. We had like a banquet table for what seemed to be damn near 20 people! We had one guy take care of us (Martin), and we sure kept him busy! But all in all, it was a damn near 5 star evening! However, I think we were there 3 plus hours :) The menu is classical German, and most dishes you can choose your sausage or your type of meat- which I thought was cool. There were plenty of options as well, in terms of sides. Hell, they even had a decent selection of German beer, in .5l or liter size. I heard rumors of them having a beer boot, but I didn't see any (I stuck to the .5 liters, as I was already hungover from activities earlier in the day). I stuck with Spaten, and ordered the Jagerschnitzel(veal, $22)- that came with a salad and two sides. I got the house cucumber dressing and sides of spaetzle and kraut. The dressing on the salad was unique, it was creamy, yet fluffy- left a film in my mouth. My veal was seasoned and cooked perfectly. It made me miss German food so much. The spaetzle was great, and the fine shredding of the cabbage and the stewing with apples made it the best kraut I have been, anywhere. For someone who skips out on veggies when I have the chance, I could literally eat a pound of their kraut a day. They had an extensive dessert menu as well, but I opted out. I know! The decor was cool, as when I went through the front door, I went in every room looking for my group. Since they were outside- I had a chance to scope out every room. Nice set up! The patio was nice, but I noticed I was getting swamped with mosquito bites. I think the more beer I had, the more the bugs left me alone. Since I was late, I didn't really have a parking spot. They said that the night we night was one of their busiest nights ever (and its been open an easy 15+ years-forgot the exact number)- and it showed! With that being said, I parked on a closed road that was unpaved in the back. Thankfully, I returned to a car with all windows and tires in tact. If you don't mind waiting for food with a large group, then you won't have an issue. I only know of 4 German restaurants around ATL and they are all at least 15 miles apart... This one comes close to my fav in the city... Consider this a heavy 4 star review! Thanks Jang for making this memorable event happen!

Gasthaus is a German restaurant located near downtown Cumming, Georgia. It's a solid 40-45 minute drive from Midtown Atlanta. If you're looking for authentic German food, then it's worth the drive. Going to the Gasthaus is like taking a trip to Germany. The unique, cottage-like atmosphere, German/Austrian staff, and makeshift beer garden in the back make your visit feel like a genuine experience. I visited Gasthaus on Saturday night with a group of 16 other Yelpers ( yelp.com/events/atlanta-… ). We took over the outdoor beer garden behind the building. The restaurant is situated inside an old white house. It's small, wooden, and creaky. Each room of the house has dining tables set up. It's almost like each group of diners gets their own private room inside the house. The beer garden consists of a covered wooden deck with table seating, a small garden, string lighting, and a coy pond (which also serves as a great nesting ground for mosquitoes). Flags of Austria and Germany are proudly displayed on the wall and traditional German music is played over the speakers. It all makes for a nice little escape. The menu includes German appetizers like potato pancakes, wurstsalat (sausage salad), escargot (snails in butter sauce), goulash (Hungarian stew), entrees like schnitzels (Austrian breaded meat cutlets), Russian beef Stroganoff, and sides such as spatzle (egg noodles), potato dumplings, German potato salad, and red cabbage. Apps run up to $9 each, schnitzels come in veal, pork, and chicken varieties and run anywhere from $15-23 per entree (includes two sides), and most other dishes are each priced in the mid-teens. It's a well-rounded menu of Austrian, German, and other European cuisine. I had the opportunity to try the following foods: Smoked salmon with apple horseradish sauce and potato pancakes Salad with house dressing (cucumber dill) Chicken schnitzel - breaded chicken breast pan-seared, served with brown gravy Wiener schnitzel (veal) - prepared same as chicken schnitzel above, except with veal Sauerbraten - roast beef marinated with sweet and sour brown gravy Bratwurst Debreziner sausage - thin, seasoned pork sausage, reddish in color Whipped potatoes German potato salad - seasoned with vinegar, onion, chicken bouillon, bacon bits Red cabbage - sweet and sour red cabbage braised with onions and apples In general, everything was pretty good. My favorite food, hands-down, was the schnitzel. I preferred the veal, but the chicken was good too. The cutlets reminded me of Southern country fried steak or Japanese tonkatsu, the significant difference being the schnitzel cutlets were cut rather thin. The breading, sauce, and succulent flavor of the meat was addicting, almost magical. The sausages were great too. The bratwurst was served with an amazing horseradish mustard. I liked the mustard so much that I used it on my sauerbraten too. The bratwurst was thick and plump. Mild in flavor, but still very good. The Debreziner sausage looked more like a traditional hot dog and reminded me of Chinese sausages. It had a strong flavor thanks to the mixture of paprika, garlic, pepper and other spices. Like some Chinese sausages, the ends of the Debreziner sauages were sliced and curled up at the ends. I didn't really like the sauerbraten. This was pretty much like a greyer, more well-cooked and tough slice of roast beef, with gravy on top. The bratwurst-supplied mustard was the only thing that made the sauerbraten enjoyable to me. The apps and sides were OK-to-good for the most part. The smoked salmon wasn't anything special, but I did enjoy the soft and succulent potato pancakes. The salad was pretty typical, but the cucumber dill dressing made it special. The dressing was light and refreshing and very similar to Greek tzatziki sauce in consistency and flavor. Heck, it might've been the same thing. The whipped potatoes were soft, buttered, and well-flavored. I preferred those over the German potato salad, which was chunks of seasoned potato with bacon bits on top. The red cabbage was sweeter than expected. The apples cooked with probably had something to do with it. Our server was Martin, who is kind of like the unofficial spokesperson for Gasthaus. He is a big, very likeable fellow with a strong voice and heavy Austrian accent. He moved from Austria to be with his wife, who is from Cumming. He was very talkative and friendly and was a big part of why we had such a good time at the restaurant. Service was slow, both in getting our dishes and getting our checks processed, but it was understandable given our large party. We almost broke the restaurant's record for number of customers with 103 (record: 110). Reservations are highly recommended. After 980+ Yelp reviews, this is only the 2nd time I describe a restaurant as a "hidden gem." Gasthaus certainly fits the bill with it's out-of-the-way location.

Food was good but they were a little pricey for the quantity served. We will definitely be back to try again.

The service was extremely SLOW. It took over 15 minutes to get a beverage and tack on another 15, after order was taken, for the salad to be served. Long wait before the entrees came out. The bread, kraut, potato salad & dumplings were average. The snitzel was well cooked and tasty. However, the gravy on my dinner companions snitzel was water thin with few mushrooms. It was sent back and due to the long wait decided to not reorder anything else. The waitress removed that entree from the bill & was apologetic and offered a free dessert but once again due to the long wait decided to not take her up on the offer. Would I return probably not.

Gasthaus is so far for most ITPers, it's almost like taking a trip to Germany to get there. And for most people not living in the Northern side of Georgia, you would need to take a road trip. Gasthaus is run like a traditional Gasthause. It looks family owned, it looks like an inn that you can stay at, and it serves authentic German food. Our server had a foreign accent. I don't want to say it sounded like a German accent since I don't know if he was German, but it was in that general area. His accent helped to add to the atmosphere. Then again, he could be faking the accent, and it's all show; so who knows? Just like a proper German place, Gasthaus has a nice beer selection. You can choose from half a liter, to a liter, to 2 liter glasses. 2 liters is about half a gallon. I have never been to Germany, but I would guess huge mugs are the norm. It did look comical to see gigantic mugs all around. The food here tasted excellent. I tried the Jagerschitzel. The Veal was tender and had great flavor. It tasted delicious. All their entrees came with salad and 2 sides. I got the sauerkraut and spatzel for my side and both tasted good. I sampled other entrees from other people's plates, and they all tasted great. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the entrees here. The portions for the entrees look just right. They don't overload you with food like most American restaurants would. In fact, it might looks smaller than what you would expect, especially for the price. That is my only complaint. For the amount of food I get, it seemed overpriced. But I do appreciate them sticking to quality rather than quantity for their food. To add to the German-like atmosphere, they decorated our area with a German flag, and they played German folk music in the background. So if you want to visit Germany, Gasthaus is a nice, cheap alternative. Gasthaus is small, cramped, and popular. So make sure to get a reservation if you want a table for dinner, especially on the weekends. If you're willing to drive to Cumming, I recommend this place. It is one of the hidden gems in the OTP.

Couldn't wait to try it but was quite disappointed. Came here with wife and daughter, in-laws and their friends. It should be noted that my father-in-law has deep German heritage and his friend, Klaus, is very much German and still splits time between here and there. Together Klaus and my FII try all the German places around Atlanta and so we were all looking forward to trying Gasthaus. None of us were impressed. German and non-German alike. Perhaps we went on an off-night or just waited until too late in the evening but everything we had was very mediocre. To top off our evening apparently someone working in the restaurant had their ride waiting for them outside and since we were siting in the Bier Garden out back we were able to listen to their very loud car stereo and smell their cigarette smoke for a good portion of our meal. Half way through the evening we were ready to go and take this place off our list.

Well.....its expensive....the portions were small and the food.....I was born and raised in germany. My mom is german. For a treat we went to this resturant. My family agreed the food was not familiar so we asked what region in germany does the menu come from...answer. " all german food taste the same" then they quickly said the cook was from austria. Well...ummmm. The food was NOT German. Nor austrian. The service was great the beer awesome which is why we give it 2 stars. 5 of us ate for $150.00...left hungry.

Ok, so I really like beer and German beer on a little patio is even better so I'm probably not the most fair and balanced person to do a review but hey you get what you get for free. I have been there 4 or 5 times and the food is good quality, consistent and pretty much true to it's root's which I think are a bit more Austrian than German but still pretty good. It's not a high end restaurant much more like a true Gasthaus. The only dig is the portions are a little small, I guess I'm just used to the huge portions I got in in Germany. Oh and the best part of the whole experience are the people that work there. If you don't have fun when you go there I would suggest you never go to Germany!

Ever since I visited Germany last year, I've seriously been craving some delicious German food. A few days ago, I stumbled across Gasthaus on Yelp. I stopped everything I was doing and made a reservation immediately. Our group consisted of seven people, but we managed to get a spot for dinner without any difficulties. The first thing you'll notice as you navigate your GPS towards this place is that this place looks exactly like a house! And if you ask me, that's one of my favorite traits about this great restaurant. There is parking available, but you may have to squeeze your car into awkward parking spaces if the place is packed. The interior of Gasthaus isn't exactly what I was call "fancy", but it certainly isn't super casual. The best way I can describe it is "super-cutesy-homey-looking with a touch of class". The menu is relatively small, but has a superb selection of dishes. They also have a nice selection of beer and wine. I ordered the Pork Jagerschnitzel with a side of sauerkraut and and red cabbage. I should note that they do have the option of adding $4 to an order for it to be shared. This is an excellent thing that they've done and I highly recommend you doing this if you are going with two people they do not eat much. They don't do what most restaurants do when you say you'll be sharing food. They take the order and split into two plates both with an equal share of sides and entree. The portions are the PERFECT portions for light eaters. The orders came promptly, and without further adieu, we dug in. The pork jagerschnitzel I ordered was almost breathtaking. The pork wasn't super thick, and was very tender. The flavor was great as well. As for the sides, the sauerkraut brought back wonderful memories of my journey to Germany last year. Since I haven't found ANY other German restaurant in Georgia that really stands out, I think it's safe to say this is the best sauerkraut you'll find within state lines. The red cabbage was JUST as delicious. It had a somewhere sweet and sour tangy taste which complimented the pork very well. **I forgot to mention that each entree comes with a salad. While this sounds somewhat insignificant, the "Dill and Cucumber dressing" we ordered with our salad was DELICIOUS! Conclusion: Gasthaus Restaurant is a super fine and authentic German restaurant. If you ask me, THIS is the place to go if you're craving some excellent German food at a very reasonable price. The portion are enough to fill up anyone, but does not stuff you like a buffet. The service is excellent, The ambiance is very homey. There is no reason to not go to Gasthaus if you are in the area. I'd have to say this is one of the few restaurants that are actually memorable.

Mediocre at best. Slow, poor service and the food was just ok. Sausage was nothing special and all our beers tasted old, stale. Soups served cold and sandwiches with burnt bread. Potato pancakes looked like something from Waffle House.

In case you haven't read my other reviews, I reserve my 5-star reviews for truly awesome places that shine in every way and Gasthaus has earned it! My first visit found me sharing a yard of beer with my husband over a delicious, though thoroughly mispronounced lunch. Because we loved it so much, we returned for my birthday party...which was large...so they put us in the biergarten...in late January- and it was fantastic! With the side curtains and the heaters and the friends and the servers who became friends, even kitchen help who came to say goodbye before they went home for the night, everyone had a great meal (plate swapping was observed) and I had 2 boots of beer- eek! There is just nothing better. Do yourself a favor, stop driving by Gasthaus and just get in there! You're welcome!

Quaint little houae reminds me of a mom and pop restaurant in Germany. Draft hefeweizen in a heavy liter mug paved the way for some potato pancakes which were OK but a little on the processed side. I ordered the Austrian which had two sausages, spatzel, swiss cheese and a salad. I was surprised that like all the other plates it came with 2 sides so tried the dumpling and very good red cabbage. For my experience I would give it 3 stars but fellow diners who got one if the schnitzels caused me to raise to 3 stars with their satisfied sighs.

We've been here numerous times and have always had great food, beverages, and friendly service. The atmosphere in a house is nice, and the biergarten outside behind the house is lots of fun in nice weather.

First time and will not be the last. Being German we found the menu to be authentic and all including deserts are made by Chef on sight. Wait staff was very cordial and engaging. Portions were large and at an excellent value.

I will go back. The food was good, but not great that night. Our young server needs experience, but was trying. He does not know how to describe the dishes. However ordering a hot pretzel to go was awesome and it did not last the drive home. Worth going again. Would go 3.5 stars if I had he option.

I love Germany, it probably doesn't help that one set of my grandparents are German, or that as soon as I landed in Germany last year, someone tried to ask me a question in German (despite the fact I was clearly with two dozen people all chattering away in English). Needless to say I will not pass up any opportunity to eat German food. So it's seriously a road trip up here. I live right near 285 and can be on 400 in a couple minutes but this is a trek up there. Don't get me wrong though, it's worth it. You drive along in what feels like the middle of nowhere (really reminiscent of Dunlap, Tennessee...) and then suddenly, there's this house. Right now there's construction going on right around it so from the street it first looks like, how on earth do you get in there? Martin is awesome first and foremost, as you may figure out from other reviews. He's hilarious, he's charismatic, and he's Austrian. All good to me. Except maybe the part where my half liter beer became a liter with some secret German conversation with my boyfriend. There are many German beers to choose from here, plus some Leinenkugel, which is from Wisconsin but decent enough. There's nothing too out of the ordinary on the beer menu, but it is all draft beer, and you can get a 2 liter boot if you so desire. I managed to drink a liter and then another half liter because let me tell you, Konig Ludwig is so tasty that I needed more because the big liter mug had been too warm to be tasty anymore. And if there was something I learned is amazingly delicious over in Germany, it is hefeweizen. They also make spetzi (cola + orange) so if you'd like to try a very German/Austrian drink, there you go. They also have wine, including a couple German ones. I didn't get any appetizers, though I was tempted by the pretzel. I figured I'd be eating enough shortly. Every entree comes with two sides and a salad. The housemade cucumber dill dressing is fantastic, so make sure to get it no matter what. For my entree, I got The Austrian, which was spaetzle with sauteed vegetables and Swiss cheese, topped with either sauerbraten or Debrezina sausage. I went with sauerbraten. It was a pretty good combination. For my sides, I had sauerkraut and German potato salad. The sauerkraut was a bit different from what I'm used to, but still good. I think it was just a touch more sour, but yeah that's kind of in the name. The German potato salad was not the best I've had. I'm used to it being served hot, usually with some mustard tang to it. Cold is just not the same and it was a bit too chunky for my liking. There's plenty of stuff for people who don't like German food too from different other European cuisines. Gasthaus is a really small place, like literally a guest house like its name would imply. It is most definitely a house. It's very compact, and even if you don't have a giant Yelp UYE group, I'd definitely make a reservation.

There's not a lot of German restaurants in North Georgia and we're glad we found this one. Gasthaus is very quant and the food is really good. Their staff is especially accommodating. No matter where you live in the Atlanta area, this one's worth the trip. Try it, you'll like it!

We went for our anniversary dinner on 12/11/14. Had a good meal but almost threw up in my mouth after seeing the health inspection score of 44 which was given on 12/16/14.They were re-inspected on 12/30/14 and only got a 77 . I don't care how good the food is with scores like those we won't ever be back. YUCK YUCK.

First of all, you must have the house dressing on your salad. If you go with your regular dressing you are missing out. I had the goulash and it was very good. Meet was tender and in a very nice sauce. If you like German potato salad be prepared because this potato salad is cold however very good. Red cabbage was very good also if you like a sweet side. My wife has a sampler platter with Weiner Snitzel, Spatzel and sausage. She really love the Spatzel. They have authentic German beers on tap. For dessert I had the Apple strudel and it was to die for. Best apple dessert I have ever had! The waitress said they make their own whip cream here and it was good too.

Some of the best German food I've had in Georgia. It's been a while since I've been, but I would like to go again. Make sure you pay attention to the hours because I've driven all the way there before and they ended up being closed. :/ Service was great.

We had one of those weird "It's October, Let's Go Have Some German Food And Maybe A Beer" moods, and decided to visit Gasthaus. Overall, our experience was very good. Staff established an easy familiarity. And the food was actually quite good. Our meal started with some potato pancakes. Served with the traditional sour-cream and applesauce (I have no idea if that's a real German tradition, or an American bastardization of some other tradition), these potato pancakes were quite tasty. I wouldn't mind making a meal out of just those. The Austrian was a clear winner: spätzle, sautéed veggies, swiss cheese, with your choice of sauerbraten or debrezina sausage. This was comfort food in a bowl. Delicious. I had the Sampler Plate with a Rouladen. All I needed was some really spicy mustard. They gave us some mustard, but it needed more kick. Still, a good meal. And beer selections seem pretty good. (Given that I'm not that well versed in beer.) I had a Erdinger Dark. It was a good compliment to the meal. I'll happily return to Gasthaus. Holler if you're coming with.

It's hard to find a German restaurant in the Atlanta area. Our favorite changed to European fusion several years ago so we've been looking for a long time. All that to emphasize that we just found our replacement! I had Rahm schnitzel with spatzle and my wife had the Sampler Plate and we both about licked our plates. Needless to say, we'll be back and will bring family!

Decided to try Gasthaus when I was visiting my cousin. She said this place was awesome and she was right! Don't believe the bad reviews below - this place is a hidden gem. The first thing I liked about it was that it looks like someones house. I am sooo over chains and franchises, so I welcomed this. You walk inside, still looks like someones house, which is kind of cool. All the rooms are separated and decorated so it has a cozy, homey feel to it. I had a brutal hangover so beer wasn't happening for me but they had a good selection. My cousin ordered the clam chowder, which was creamy and delicious. I ordered the beef stroganoff and veggies and I was not disappointed! The beef was tender and the homemade noodles (I forgot the german name, spatzel?) were great. I was very happy with my meal. We saved room for dessert and shared some apple streudal. I was impressed. I thought of Gasthaus because I am heading back to GA tonight and was looking up restaurants in the Cumming area - guess what comes up as #1? There's a reason.

When the best thing about a restaurant is the beer they have room for improvement. Very pricey. Great service and ok food quality. If you have ever lived in Germany and or ate authentic German food, this is not for you. Easier and cheaper to make it at home. Disappointed.

Ignore any and all reviews that bash this place - seriously, just please, do that. This place is the bomb.com and if I could eat here everyday, I would. Forever and ever and ever. Their food just melts in your mouth. Everything has such fantastic flavor, the pricing won't hit you too hard (though it's not cheap!) and the service, which hit-and-miss sometimes, is still good enough to get me by with little to no complaints. After all, so long as the place is noticiably clean, well kept and the food and drink is delicious, I'll keep coming back! If you like German cuisine with a bit of an Austria twist, do your taste buds a favor and drop by. YUM!

Something has changed here. It has long been one of our favorite restaurants, but last night's meal was different. The second half of the name is no longer "Le Cafe" but something like "Tumorial". Not sure what that means, but we paid it no mind. But that's not the difference I am talking about. The rouladin had some extra type of good taste that I noticed immediately., the spaetzle had better flavor and the red cabbage just begged to be inhaled. Jessica, our waitress said they had changed out some chef and that was probably the reason for the change. All I can tell you is that is even better now than it has been in years - and it was never bad. Even the wife's chicken cordon bleu was a step above what we were accustom to. The food was simply amazing. And to top it off, I had to go with my staple: Westiner Dunkel on draft. Somehow this beer makes everything taste better. The new chefs have made a definite impact on one of our favorite restaurants. They have made it better than it was, and that is hard to do.

I swear I drove by this place maybe a million times. I swear, I thought it was a car lot. I found it inadvertently on another site. Our food was wonderful though. My one piece of advice is that their soda's are in cans. Its sort of a pet peeve; otherwise, I would give them 5 stars.

I had a great experience at this restaurant. It was a little on the small side, but it was a cozy environment. We sat outside under an awning, next to a little pond. There were string lights which was a nice touch once it got later in the evening. Even though it was a small place they were able to accommodate our large group. Our waiter was the best! He was actually Austrian, and he told us a few stories and made a few jokes. It felt like he was part of our group. Now to the most important part... the food! The menu had a wide variety of German and Austrian foods to choose from. I had Rouladen, which is thin sirloin wrapped around potato, bacon, and pickle. It was totally succulent . The meat was covered in a mouth watering gravy... I'm actually drooling a little as I remember that amazing meal. There were several sides to choose from, and I asked the waiter to choose what would work best with my entree. I had the red cabbage... one word... devine. It was sweet, and seemed to have a hint of cinnamon (if you don't want your veggies sweet this isn't for you). I also had the egg noodle which was a nice compliment to the meal. The food was AMAZING. I ate every last drop on my plate. I also had a German beer with my dinner. Don't ask me which one it was, but it was great (naturally since German's know their beer). Don't even get me started on the beverage selection. There was indeed a large variety, you won't be disappointed. Finally, I managed to squeeze some dessert in. I had the delectable German Chocolate Cake..... need I say more? Since this happens to be a favorite dessert of mine I know how this cake should taste, and it was just as good as any home made slice I've ever had.

Don't let the need for a coat of paint on the building fool you, we were served by the owner and his son, they could not have been nicer! The outdoor beer garden was fun, there is a little road noise at times but no big deal. The food was amazing!! Fresh made bread and authentic and delicious German food, our compliments to the Chef, we will be returning as soon as we're back in Georgia.

There is absolutely no reason to drive to Cumming from Atlanta, as far as I'm concerned, except to come to Gasthaus. A few weeks ago, I discovered Gasthaus on Yelp and drove out here with a friend for lunch on a Saturday. Too bad I didn't check the Yelp page before leaving, because I would've known that they're not open for lunch! It took over an hour to get out there with all the highway construction and accidents, so I was majorly disappointed about my mistake. My friend convinced me that we should kill a few hours and wait for the dinner service to begin. Since there was nothing to do, we drove over to Duluth for the afternoon and drove back for dinner. I'm so glad we decided to stay because this place is a real gem. They have a ton of different schnitzels and specialty German beers. We started with the freshly baked house bread, which came out pipping hot and was fantastic. The salad wasn't that exciting, but had some goat cheese and the greens were fresh. I had the daily schnitzel special, which was a Pariserschnitzel. It had bacon, mushrooms, and onions on top of the schnitzel. The schnitzel itself was nice and crispy and the toppings definitely added a punch. I was starving, so I was happy to see that i had 2 large pieces of schnitzel, which filled me up. My friend, whose German grandmother made schnitzel often when he was growing up, enjoyed his schnitzel as well. Not only is the food great, but the ambience is great. We sat on the back patio (watch out for the bugs though!) and our waitress was dressed in a dirndle. She also used a German accent when pronouncing the dishes and beers. It would've been even better if they had some German music playing. When we first got to the restaurant, the hostess asked us if we had a reservation. We replied no and thought she was crazy. It was 6pm on a Saturday night, and no one else was in sight. By the time we got up to leave, every seat in the house was packed. This is out in the middle of nowhere, but I am already considering the next time I will trek out here to get some schnitzel!

Great Great Great place to have dinner. Don't see a lot of German restaurants around, but this place represents German food very well. It has a very homey feel and the staff is very nice and helpful. When we were first looking over the menu I thought it looked on the pricey side, but entree's include a salad and bread so it's actually pretty reasonably priced. They have a nice selection of German beers some of which I haven't seen many places. I had the Weiner Schnitzel, and I apologize if I have butchered the spelling. It was delicious. Our service was great as well. Anyone wanting to try something you don't have every night should give this place a go. There isn't an overabundance of parking.

My partner and I have been to this restaurant twice now and the food has been amazing both times. I am a native-born German and this food is exactly like you would find it in a very good restaurant in Germany. Most recent meal was as follows: *Appetizer:* Potato pancakes with salmon, accompanied by a horseradish applesauce. This appetizer alone is worth the trip. The potato pancakes have an incredible flavor, probably due to the green onion (?) mixed into the batter. Additionally, the salmon topping that accompanies them is the best salmon I have ever eaten. It is marinated in Jack Daniels, then seasoned with a medley of perfectly blended spices. The horseradish applesauce adds just enough zing. *Entree:* The special, "Paris Schnitzel." Wienerschnitzel with bacon, choice of sides. I chose red cabbage and spaetzle, my partner chose the roasted potato hashbrowns. This is the second time I've had the schnitzel and they do not disappoint. The meat is tender, but the breaded crust is crispy and perfectly suited to soaking up the gravy. I got the pork, but you can also choose veal if you're feeling extravagant. That would probably be even more tender. The red cabbage is delicious. It is seasoned with spices that remind you of Christmas, but not so much that it's overwhelming. My partner reported that the potatoes are crispy on the outside, tender on the inside and delicious. *Dessert:* Apfelstrudel with ice cream and whipped cream. I was pretty full after the meal, but you can't finish here without getting dessert, too. The Apfelstrudel is homemade, very cinnamony, and accompanied by ice cream and whipped cream. I thought the apples were a touch too tangy for this strudel, but my partner thought it was just right. *Drinks:* They have a nice selection of German beers and a biergarten out back. There is also a wine menu, although I haven't really tried any. We usually get the Radler, which is a refreshing combination of beer and lemonade usually drunk in the summer. *Service:* Except on very busy days, the service is a one-man show named Martin (a native Austrian). When not too flustered by a multitude of tables, he is a wonderfully attentive and friendly waiter--always ready to refill a glass or to explain a dish. We were the last customers recently and, after we had finished our meal, he sat down with us and we talked a while about this and that. I got the feeling this wasn't unusual for him--if you get there just at the right moment, you benefit from great food and conversation. We'll definitely be back.

What a great place! The food was terrific and our server, Martin (not sure if that is how he spells his name), was awesome! The amount of food you get for the money is spot on with larger than average portions. I had the Sampler Plate with the Debrezina Sausage; highly recommended! If you're a fan of German Chocolate cake, they have probably the best I've ever had! It is a small place so I would recommend calling for a reservation the day of. My family and I will be returning for sure!

We found the Gasthaus about 1.5 years ago and it has become our favorite restaurant. My Grandmother was German (northern) and my husband went to school in Austria for a few years of his life. Both of us love their food. The first time I was there I was surprised that the "German potato salad" was cold, I have since learned that it is a "northern" thing for hot German potato salad. This week my family from Ohio and Texas came to town and we enjoyed another fabulous meal with extra friendly service at Gasthaus. I had the "house" Cucumber Dill dressing on the salad, Stroganoff and Black Forest Cake, all delicious. I also tried the Goulash (not for me but my husband and brother raved about it) and the bread pudding - yum! I highly recommend reservations, especially on weekend nights.

Outstanding service and the fresh flavorful quality of food make this a destination for meeting good friends and sharing from a diverse menu of authentic dishes. I first dined there on a Friday night and never felt rushed to finish and open the table. The wide selection of German Beers and wine make waiting for a table a non issue! Martin is a very knowledgeable server and native Austrian. Ask him about his home village near Salzburg but hurry he is returning with his young family in July!

The Gasthaus has descended into "how cheap and pre-packaged can we get?" The results are generally ghastly. The German potato salad is now some tasteless pre-prepared potato slices with a few bacon bits with no noticeable seasoning. The sauerbraten is very bland, as the sweet and sour seasonings are almost completely absent. The stroganoff is strictly military issue. They couldn't even present a passable kids menu chicken entree. One word: N A S T Y ! A drop in quality this severe is a disgrace. As a person who loves German food, I was embarrassed to have brought my family there to eat. Obviously, I will never go there again. I would warn anyone to else to stay away. Chef: Since food cost is now all you care about, I can help you out there. You won't have to worry about how much my food costs you any more!

We come here for lunch when we don't mind taking a little longer lunch. Lunches take about 30-40 minutes so don't expect to be in and out in less than an hour. First things first. Their Rueben is the best I have ever eaten. Anywhere. They make their own corned beef. The turkey Rueben is a close second. Their sides are awesome. The Potato salad? A++ The Spätzle is awesome. My wife loves the Red Cabbage side. The beer garden in the back is a ton of fun and a great setting. (They do allow smoking on it, so we always check it out before we agree to sit there...) For lunch, a lunch item and beer or wine is only $10.00.

Awesome restaurant. Who would have ever thought this place would be way out on exit 14... You don't expect much beyond chain restaurants out that far. But it was great. the atmosphere was just fun, A simple little house repurposed as a restaurant. Food, Start out with some complimentary bread, actually went through 2 loafs, that were 2 different kinds I think. Both were nice, fresh, warm. I liked one more than the other, but I could just be crazy and maybe they were the same. Potato pancakes with ham and swiss, kinda different, very good. First time there, had the sampler for dinner. Excellent, every portion was excellent. Perfectly cooked and prepared. Potato salad and potato dumplings, both great. Finished it off with an apple struedel, it was great. I will certainly return for more. If your in the area, or willing to take the drive out, do it.

Went here to celebrate my birthday in December and it was worth every MINUTE of the drive from Atlanta. I lived in Germany in college this is hands down the best German food i've had in the states. The schnitzels are especially delicious and the beer selection is awesome. I had one of the 2L boots. Friend of mine who is a foodie had the pork chop and he could not put down his fork. Blake was my server and was super helpful and coordinated with my girlfriend to surprise with a german chocolate cake.

If you want to visit this place on a weekend evening, make sure that you have made reservations. I will be back, with reservations. It may be the sign of a good restaurant that is this popular.

The wife and I had a wonderful experience at the Gasthaus. I've been to many German restaurants before and this may be the best food I've had. I was a little skeptical about the place as I've not had much good ethnic food in Cumming, but what a gem! We had an appetizer of potato pancakes with ham and cheese which were excellent. Salads (be sure to get the homemade dressing-yum!), and Wiener Schnitzel with a scrumptious cherry sauce that was out of this world. We sat outdoors as the weather was perfect that night, the Bier garden was cozy and as I drank my beer I almost forgot that I was right off highway 9 in Cumming GA. Our server Martin was really great and very friendly. Our bill was a bit pricey but was certainly worth every cent. I look forward to our next visit. Cheers!

VERY SMALL, VERY CUTE I was doing research on the German culture for a sociology project and so my partner and I decided to go here. The place is a small house converted into a cozy, small dining area with a Bier Garden outside. A Beir Garden is basically an outdoor area that friends and family go to eat and enjoy a beer, much like a nice patio. Inside, the decorations were of German traditions like antique plates, a wooden clog, a cuckoo clock, pictures of the romantic Swan Castle, and wooden table and chairs. Next time I would like to eat outside or just have a beer in the Bier Garden. The food was really good. I have only eaten a few German foods before I came here. The potato pancakes are awesome with a applesauce-like dip. The pretzel was good and came with a super-spicy mustard. I would say that mustard is to German food like ketchup is to American food. The goulash was excellent! My friends were equally impressed with their meals. I also enjoyed a nice tall glass of German beer and an apple strudel. YUMMY!! It is definitely worth going here and checking it out. Don't be put off by the small, white house exterior. Make sure that if you have a larger party or go on a weekend you make reservations. Parking can be tricky because it is a small lot.

I come here often. It is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. The salads are always very good. I also love the adventure of trying new foods here. The potato salad and the cabbage are always delicious, and I especially love the desserts. It isn't a fast eat as others have said, so you should be prepared to relax and enjoy yourself. The service is friendly and helpful. I love, love this little restaurant, and it is a refreshing change from the all the restaurants nearby.

I am a native German and my family and I were very exited to find a German restaurant, but it was very disappointing. The food was mediocre and we found it to be too expnsive for the quality. The beer was good, the "Bedienung" (server) very nice and even the music was okay if you like this kind, but if I had gotten this food in Germany I would have returned it to the kitchen!

Best German food I've had since my grandmother use to make it for me when I was younger. Brilliant! Nicest staff around.

Doug W and I went to the Taste of Forsyth today. There we had our first taste of the Gasthaus cuisine (tasty little schnitzel sandwiches). A guy in liederhosen gave us a coupon and that sealed the deal on our dinner plans for that night. Firstly, if you are unfamiliar with the wiener schnitzel, start googling it now. You have been missing out on one of the European continent's finest contributions to civilization. When you first pull up to the Gasthaus, you will probably be surprised to see it. It is a small white house on a dumpy section of Hwy 9 near Mary Alice Park Rd. You have possibly driven by this place 100 times and not paid much attention. The inside looked a lot like many restaurants that I ate at when I was studying abroad in Europe: lots of wooden tables, rustic bits of stuff festooning the walls. Being a lovely night, we chose to eat outside in what i would presume one would call the beer garden. Frankly, I could have closed my eyes and easily have imagined not being in Cumming but being tucked back in some quite alley in New York City (this is a lovely feeling, BTW). Martin our server was still wearing his lederhosen and had a long day. We sympathized with his exhaustion and took his recommendation for our entrees (kirsch schnitzel). Martin did not steer us wrong! Our schnitzels arrived with a lovely cherry sauce, crispy breading, and great sides (spaetzle, steamed veggies, and some sort of potato dumpling). We also had a potato pancake stuffed with cheese and ham as an appetizer. It was quite tasty. Do try the house dressing (a creamy cucumber dill) as it was delightful. Gasthaus was a great deviation from the standard places around Cumming and the food was second to none.

We come here about once a year as the mood strikes, and we've never been disappointed. The food is very authentic, and they have the German beer I like.
