I have been here a couple times before and when I graduated from UWG this weekend and my family asked where I wanted to have lunch, I knew I wanted to go to Plates! I usually get the chicken salad sandwich and salad lunch, but I wanted to try something new. I ended up getting the Ahi Tuna Tacos, which were absolutely delicious. The rest of my party got the hibachi lunch, general tso's chicken, and the french dip. I tried all of them (we are a family that shares) and there were no complaints! All the food was amazing! Plates is my favorite restaurant in Carrollton, and I am sad that I have graduated and won't have any more excuses to drive up there and go out to eat! I highly recommend you get the sweet tea too, it's just right!

I made the 60 mile trek out to Carrollton for a business meeting and we ended up at Plates for lunch. What a great spot and the food was very good. My ahi tuna wrap would of been much better minus the sweet sauce in the wrap. The homemade potato chips were fantastic. My colleague had the Amazing Grilled Cheese sandwich with the sweet potato fries and was very satisifed. If you like tomatoes, make sure to order the fried tomatoes appetizer...a very, very good choice! I may of rated it a 3.5, but the atomosphere and great service bumped it up a notch.

Been in Carrollton for work and lunched around in places: this would be my favorite lunch place. Nice ambience, good service, great food. Ate here quite a few times and the BEST dish I tried here is the Philly Steak Sandwich. The bread was fresh and the meat was awesome! The Artichoke dip was tasty too. Other items I liked are Seafood Pasta, Fish Taco. The sides are good: fried Okra, Sweet Potato fries. I can come back here any day for another meal, it is THAT good!

Awesome place- I've shown up with fairly large parties more than once and the staff is always very accommodating. The food is fantastic! The bar upstairs is a great place to stop in after work for a drink. Highly recommended!

A must eat place in Carrollton. When I found out I was traveling to Carrollton to work everyone who had been there before mentioned Plates on the Square. I'm glad they did, because it was delicious. The atmosphere of this place is laid back and trendy. This seems like a good group place and I saw tons of groups dining here. They have a fun mixed drinks menu. I don't like to drink, but if I did it is places like this that I do it at. I started with Craig's salad. It was delicious! I then got the Elk Meatloaf. The sweet potatoes were really sweet, but good. The green beans tasted like they came from a can. I liked the Elk Meatloaf. It tasted really meaty if that makes any sense. The servers were very nice. My only complaint is my Meatloaf came while I was only half way through my salad. I felt rushed to finish my salad. I would have rather waited for my main after finishing my salad then getting it early. Overall this is a great place to eat and I would highly suggest it!

A brief stop in Carrolton turned into a four hour layover. Thanks to Yelp, we located Plates. The downtown location in an old building provided a cool vibe/atmosphere. We were there at lunch and it wasn't overly crowded, allowing us to be seated quickly and talk business without interruption. The staff was friendly and the food was great. The menu ranged from tuna, chicken and pork to hamburgers, Chinese, Japanese and Mexican. Often, an eclectic menu like this hints that the food will be marginal at best. Not so! I opted for the pot roast sandwich with sweet potato fries and my buddy got got the ahi tuna spinach wrap. Neither meal disappointed and this place would be on my itinerary if I found myself in Carrolton again. I reserve five stars for places that are out-of-this-world, so plates gets a solid 4.4 (not quite enough to be rounded up to 5).

Don't make reservations. They mean nothing but a wait and an excuse. And there score is 80.

After seeing all the good reviews, my wife and I had hoped to experience a great dinner tonight, but we were both very disappointed. I ordered the cedar grilled salmon (their signature dish) which was very good, but I'm pretty sure it was not sitting on a piece of cedar. There was no cedar flavor at all. The block of wood just smelled like charred wood. The green beans were canned and overcooked to a state of mush. My wife had a burger which was overdone and completely lacking in seasoning, and her fries were cold. The service was below average.

Only wait to order was on the rest of our large group to arrive. Everyone seemed happy with their selections. Even in our large group there were so many options we could have all selected something different. I chose the Smokehouse Grilled Cheese with BBQ pork added on recommendation from the waiter. There was a good deal more pork than I expected. Probably would have been just as good without. Service was great. Would definitely consider returning when in the area again.

Found this place in downtown Carrollton. Nice atmosphere, great service, and very good food. My son loved his burger...I had the chicken sandwich...and the wife had the nachos. Lunch fare at dinner. Would definitely come back when in town.

One of my favorite restaurants on the Square, and by far my favorite bar on the Square. The food is great- the Bayou Burger lets you dine high class at a low class price, and its phenomenal. I have never tried a dish I didn't like. My only complaint is the smoked salmon dip... Whoever the insane person was that decided to get rid of the AMAZING lobster and crab dip and replace it with this monstrosity should be committed... Bar life is also fun. The bartenders are great, and between 5pm-8pm you can hang out with your favorite cast members from "Cheers". Then after 10:30 or so you can "enjoy" the college crowd. Also, how many bars are the where you can drink next to Robert E. Lee? Not many...

I've come to Plates many late nights to enjoy their upstairs bar however, I came here for lunch a few weeks back and was very surprised at the variety of food choices. Their menu included Mexican, Japanese & American dishes. I tried the chicken hibachi. No, it's not like when you go to an actual hibachi restaurant but they do put their own twist on things! They included a side of yum yum sauce that taste just right! Besides the food our waiter was great! We were seated immediately and it took us awhile to decided what we wanted and we didn't feel rushed at all. My friend decided to try a spicy chicken and he made sure to refill her cup before she could even realize it was low. I have no complaints!

Love this little place in Carrollton! Had Sunday brunch here with my boyfriend and his dad who's from Carrollton. I got the fried chicken with fried okra, fried green tomatoes and mac and cheese, super southerny food because I wanted to try it~ My boyfriend got the croque madame because he likes egg and his dad got the Denver omelette. Everyone really enjoyed their food. Plus they had these biscuit things on the table and they were the yummiest things I ever ate. I dream of them. My boyfriend's dad who got the Denver omelette said he preferred that meal over the fancy meal we had in Atlanta the night before at 4th and Swift. He also said it was the best omelette he's ever had in his life... and he's old as fuck so that's a big deal. The fried okra tasted so good and the green tomatoes were delicious! The fried chicken was yummy even if the gravy was a little too salty for this Asian girl's taste. Whenever I come back to this cute little Georgia town, I'm definitely coming back to Plates on the Square if only for some of those amazing biscuits.

Excellent food and friendly service. They seated eight of us within minutes on a Saturday night after a less than desirable experience at another restaurant. Our waitress was adorable and very accommodating. Very nice atmosphere. Would recommend.

Great rolls made with the same recipe as The Little Hawaiian. They have a wide selection on the menu and I've yet to have a bad option. Slightly upscale and definitely expect $15+ per person. I personally don't drink but I know they have a very extensive drink menu as well

Delcious little spot on the square, that feels like you have gone back in time. The food was delicious southern comfort food. I had the spinach artichoke dpi to start and the shrimp and grits... You aren't in the south that often you better live it up! Both were absolutely delicious!

Stopped in for a late dinner here last night and wasn't expecting much... Boy, is it nice to be surprised! Had a delicious meal in a relaxed warm setting. Ate upstairs at the bar and enjoyed a game being in tv. Had an ahi steak that melted in your mouth. Will definitely be coming back next trip here!

Food wasn't bad. I wanted the hanger steak that is listed on the menu but when I ordered, they no longer had it and haven't taken it off the menu. My filet was undercooked but was pretty tasty. The mashed potatoes were good but the ~5 pieces of vegetables that they gave me had almost no taste. The service was pretty bad. I was eating by myself as I am on work travel, but was barely acknowledged until the large group left. All in all, not bad but they need to step up the service and update the menus.

This is the best dining experience in this lackluster town if you have city taste buds and are attuned to multi-ethnic and gourmet food. The food is consistently good. Sunday brunch is always tasty- from the french toast to the delicious breakfast croissant sandwiches. The lunch salad buffet is a bargain. The burgers are all delicious- from the black bean to the buffalo, beef and lamb (yes, the lamb burger is delicious, and you can order it with any toppings). The pizzas are tasty. The entrees are always really good- especially the fish dishes (which I find to be far superior to a well-known fish place down the street). Presentations here are great too. It is my go-to place in this otherwise pathetic culinary town.

I am quite impressed with Plates on the Square. I recently got married and had my wedding reception at Plates on the Square, and, not only did they have a fabulous deal to offer financially, they were willing to do just about anything I wanted! We had some problems in planning because they have no formal event planner and the employee with whom we were working quit just a few weeks before my wedding. I almost gave up and left them, but they contacted me and reassured me all of my special requests and needs would be cared for. They had a cleaning crew come in and specially clean the restaurant so it would be perfect, they allowed my own music, they were flexible with the use of tables and chairs, and, not surprisingly, the food was wonderful. Brad and Fernando were great help in communication and final planning, and our servers were on top of their game! It was wonderful!

Plates is probably the highest quality cuisine you will find in Carrollton. I like the small seating area because it keeps the atmosphere quiet and reserved. The menu is surprisingly diverse and even more surprising is that everything is done well. I've been twice and had the Charleston shrimp & grits the first time then the elk meatloaf the second time. Both were absolutely amazing. The service was top notch. Hostess was accommodating for a last minute large party and the server was on point all night.

This place gets 5 stars because it far exceeded my expectations. Service was excellent. Food was amazing. We had the fried green tomatoes and mushroom/artichoke dip to start. They were both excellent. Artichoke dip I'll give the edge to because the fried green tomatoes needed a little more flavor (salt or balsamic reduction). We all loved our entrees. Sweet potato fries were nice as well. I would definitely suggest this place for a nice lunch in Carrolton. Good spot for a business lunch.

As far as a restaurant, I am a big fan of Plates. The square in Carrollton is short on good restaurants that serves good meals. I especially enjoy their spinach and artichoke dip appetizer. Although the prices can be steep, it is still do-able. Well-drinks are reasonably price if u want to drink for a bit at night. It is not a club to go crazy on. Just a casual sit-down drinking area unless some drunk sorority or fraternity group decides to ruin the night.

Very nicely done! Great find in a small town. Respectable wine list with good prices. Dinner menu is solid and offers a lot of choices. Service was good (friendly but not too familiar), but did seem a little slow. This may have been due to issues in the kitchen but even getting a glass of wine took awhile on a Tuesday evening without a full dining room. Not enough to prevent me from going back - I will definitely visit on my next trip to town - just be aware that patience may be needed. Food was solid with one small exception. Fried green tomatoes were nicely done; the little touch of goat cheese on the top was the perfect amount of salt. Both the French onion and tomato soups were really good. The French onion was exactly what you want but rarely get. Pot roast and sides were well done. The only miss was the Mac n Cheese entree. To be fair, I ordered it without bacon but the dish was poorly executed. Pasta was mushy and devoid of flavor (nothing from with the cheese or crab came through- the bacon may have covered that but since it was excluded from my dish, I cannot recommend it). Server handled it without making it an issue. Overall, looking forward to my next visit.

Visited for lunch during a business trip. Service was okay, and the food was underwhelming. The salad bar does have a good variety of healthy selections. I had crab cakes as the entree and although the presentation was good, the taste did not measure up. Out of three restaurants I visited during the stay (Little Hawaiian and Samba Loca were the other two), this was my least favorite.

Pretty good overall. Great service from Fernando. My fish special was dry and uninspired, but my friends seafood penne a la vodka was impressive. Drinks from bar were left much to be desired. I will definitely go again. Hope the overall experience improves relative to the price.

Brunch is AMAZING, but get their before noon or you will have to wait. Try the eggs benedict and the Charleston-style grits -- after trying their creamy fluffy grits, you won't ever go back to the instant stuff. Service is consistently great. The dinner menu has incredibly variety, though the prices can be a little expensive. The restaurant is comprised of two levels -- a dining area on the main floor and a bar area with tables, a small stage, and a patio upstairs. The downstairs dining room is intimate and chic with large glass windows and interesting wall finishes. My only complaint is the music level upstairs during the evening. I'd love to have a drink at the bar after dinner, but not being able to hear the person next to me is a real turn off.

A cute place with good food. A bit expensive for the area but holds up well to bigger city places. Cheesy biscuits were good and wine flights were interesting. Lots of food, even for appetizers, so if you aren't that hungry, just order an appetizer and enjoy the biscuits. There is patio seating for cooler summer evenings.

This is by far the best place I've eaten in town. I'm here from New York for a week due to work and this Restaurant is on par with the best from NYC.

One of Carrollton's best restaurants! Plates boasts a sophisticated menu for this tiny college town & I, for one, have been impressed on each of my visits. The atmosphere is certainly warm & charming - exposed brick, unique wine-themed lighting, etc. The servers are attentive, always keeping my water glass full {something difficult since I've been called a "sponge on more than one occasion}. On my most recent visit, I was celebrating a girlfriend's birthday with a big group of ladies. We started with cocktails, of course - a Sex on the Beach for me... mmm and apps - the crab cakes, fried green tomatoes & stuffed calamari. All were uniquely prepared and $12 or less for a portion large enough to share with the group! We then moved on to entrees... I ordered the Seafood Penne a la Vodka which was amazing. The perfect sized portion - especially after all those apps - with jumbo shrimp & lump crab meat in a creamy, flavorful vodka sauce. Some of the other gals enjoyed the seared Ahi tuna and Jezebel pork loin, among other, flavorful dishes. We did notice the Kangaroo tenderloin on the menu, but no one was brave enough to order. We actually skipped dessert, as we'd enjoyed quite a few treats earlier in the afternoon & continued with our cocktails, until the restaurant went into "nighttime mode" and we went upstairs to their bar area, also known as "Uncorked." A place where young people, and college students alike enjoy evening's out in this little town. We certainly had a wonderful experience & I'm looking forward to going back the next time I find myself in Carrollton!

Plates was excellent the first time I went! The service was great., the food was better! I had the Cuban and it was awesome! However, the second time I went the service was terrible and the food was alright. They were back-to-back days, so I was dumbfounded by the differences. Would be five stars for first visit, but they need some consistency!

My favorite restaurant in Carrollton hands down! I haven't had everything on the menu, but I don't think I have had to, to say that everything on their menu is great. Their food is never under or over seasoned or cooked. Their menu consists of mostly common food, prepared in delicious and uncommon styles. For example; I love their Fried Green Tomato sandwiches, with a fresh roll cut in half as the bun, 3 perfectly fried green tomatoes, topped with chopped tomatoes and other delicious goodness. The down stairs is usually quieter at night, and a bit more laid back, as most of the college kids go upstairs to the bar, so don't let the college kids scare you off. Plates has things set up perfectly so that everyone gets their area. During the day a nice lunch sitting out on the upper balcony is also a great option. The chief is passionate about what he is doing, and on a slower hour may come out and take your order. The waitresses are kind and generous. One time we came in a few minutes after they closed, and they happily served us anyways. That just shows great service. I have no complaints about Plates, everything is great.

We waltzed into Plates at 1:45 PM on a Sunday (they close at two on Sundays). They have nice outdoor seating that opens on Adamson Square, a colorful collection of boutiques and dives typical of a college town, so we asked to be seated there, even those it was empty with no tables set. The hostess seated us outside immediately. A minute later, a waiter showed up to tell us that our assigned waitress was busy with a large group and would be slightly delayed. He offered to take our drink order and did a good job of describing the selection of drafts, guiding me to a great IPA. A few minutes later, he delivered our drinks and asked if our waitress had yet appeared. When we replied in the negative, he offered to take our orders if we were ready. We were, and he did. I don't know what the menu looks like on a weekday, but on Sunday afternoon, it was a single dated sheet dominated by a deal where you could choose one of several meats and fishes with three sides for $9, or four sides for $7. I chose fried chicken breast with pinto beans, stewed collard greens with ham hocks, and fried okra. My partner chose collards, okra, broccoli and asparagus casserole, and fried green tomatoes. These dishes were delivered by our cheerful waitress. Since the pinto beans were the best I had had in my life, I asked her if they were in fact fresh. She wasn't sure, so checked with the chef who told her that they were taken out of a can early in the morning and set to stew with ham hocks. As you can maybe guess, we felt that the sides were fabulous without exception. The fried chicken was a little dry, possibly because by the time I was eating it, it was half an hour beyond their scheduled closing. We were the last patrons. Not once did the staff try to hurry us. I would go back to Plates in a flash.

In town for the week, my colleagues insisted that I try one of the better places in town. I was underwhelmed with Plates, and the square in general. I had a reservation, but didn't need one and no one seemed to know what to do with me, after having to ask the bartender. No Mater Di or front person. I was placed at a high chair table near the bar. The scallops wrapped in bacon were passable, although straight out of the freezer. I ordered the blackened Red Snapper with crayfish etoufee. I could tell there must have been some crayfish there at some point due to the shell I picked out, but otherwise it was impossible to tell. I never knew that salt is black, but that was the only flavor in the snapper, and lots of it. Small portion, and plainly plated. The server didn't ask if I wanted desert, and I did better buying a premade Tiaramisu at Krogers. This may well have been the best restaurant in Carrollton.

Our favorite place to go. The food is always good, innovative, and the ambiance is wonderful. Enjoyed chatting with the chef when we tried one of his "experiments" that was out of this world (it should have been on the regular menu!). So glad I don't have to go into Atlanta for great food!!!

I had the bison burger with sweet potato fries. The burger was a little above average, but not that great considering the price. It was the first time I've ever had sweet potato fries and they were soo good and different. I actually went to O'Charley's later that week, and also had their sweet potato fries which weren't as good. This is one of the better places to eat in Carrollton.

This place is like a party for your tastebuds. The food is always fresh and flavorful, with a flair of the unique. I had the blacked mahi which was wonderful, it had just the right amount of spices and the mango salsa just put it over the top. I have not had a bad meal at this restaurant. It's hard to find a place in the south that doesn't serve everything fried, so it is a delight when you find a place that's not the norm. If you are looking for a place to have a nice healthy meal in a relaxing atmosphere this is the place. I wish there were locally owned establishments like this rather than the overly commercialized places you usually find.

I have had the pleasure of taking several clients as well as friends and family to Plates and have not had a disappointing meal. Let's start from the beginning! Starters are fabulous, but I have to warn you that you will not want to share. The best is the bacon wrapped barbeque scallops. With fried green tomatoes to Ahi tuna, there is something for everyone. As far as the main dishes, great taste, good portions, a bit higher than an average chain restaurant. Try the Charleston Shrimp and Grits or the Steaks. It seems an odd place to have Indian cuisine, but the flavors work. Desserts, let's just say order one of everything. The molten chocolate cake is wonderful, but I must admit I enjoyed the Banana Foster the most. All I can say is enjoy yourself!
