India Cafe can best be described as, like its namesake, dichotomous. One must balance delicious truly homemade food with what can best be stated as the most amateur restaurant I've ever eaten in. It is run by a husband and wife team, with the husband functioning as the waiter/host/busboy/cashier. Rumor has it that he bought the restaurant for his wife because she always wanted to have a restaurant, but for whatever reason never went down the standard chef's route of learning to cook things other than Indian food and getting yelled at by belligerent drunks in chefhats. The husband is an esteemed physician at the Medical College, who is grossly over-educated for his waitering job, and it shows. Meaning, don't expect a water refill, to be seated in any orderly fashion, to put in your order within 15 minutes of being seated, et al. It is really hit-or-miss with this place, you can show up (during its limited and odd hours of operation) and not get a seat for 45 minutes (despite there being open tables), or you may get seated immediately. It's truly enigmatic, and understaffed, in that way. But what is certain is that you will get some seriously tasty food. I have never not had what Faulkner wish he had described as a Taste-o-gasm upon sinking my teeth into perfectly spiced tika masaala. The chef will come out and greet you during your meal, and she is simply a doll. She will often give you freebie tasters of whatever Subcontinent concoction she has served up in the kitchen. Everything on the menu is worth trying, just don't get your panties in a wad if the service isn't to your idiosyncratic liking, because like the ancient Hindu proverb (fabricated entirely by me) states: "He who scales the mountain, dines with the elephant." Think about it.

Absolutely amazing food!! I love the husband and wife that own/operate this place. The lady does all of the cooking and the man does all of the serving. My wife and I always have an excellent experience here. We always look forward to the brownie and ice cream at the end!!

This place is probably one of the worst Indian restaurants in the area due to the slow service and mediocre food. And dinner service is confusing as well. Instead of being served the entrees we ordered, we get veggie lasagna instead because it's left over from a party the night before and the entrees aren't anywhere close to the menu description.

I won't be going back. The food is good, but the prices do not match the quality of food, service, and location. I paid $51 for 2 drinks, 2 apps, and a meal with naan. That is crazy. I am generally biased towards any place that make me pay for my naan. The service is probably the worst part. The staff are very nice, but clearly don't understand front house management. Multiple parties walked out after waiting up to 20 minutes to be served drinks. Not worth it.

First time in Augusta, GA- and decided on Indian! Very quaint restaurant with amazing food. MUST TRY!!!!! First Ordered the hummus/eggplant dip. Husband's favorite! Smooth and flavorful dip served with warm naan. Then had the lamb samosa. OMG! Flakey crust filled with lamb and potato filling. Definitely my favorite! This was served with a cilantro chutney! My husband licked the small bowl of cilantro chutney cleaned. Lastly we shared the mango chkn as our entree. By far a very moist chkn breast! A large portion too! The dish is spicy, tangy, and sweet! Very satisfied!!

Fantastic food! This place is so different from most other Indian restaurants (not only in Augusta, but even Atlanta/Columbia/Charlotte). Don't go here looking for standard butter chicken/saag paneer/chicken tikka masala. Instead, you get fish and shrimp dishes, spicy lamb vindaloos, tasty wraps, and fresh dosas. Moreover, I'm not dumb enough to think that it's the most healthy stuff for you, but the chef finds a way to add complex flavor using spices rather than relying on the butter/ghee/cream/oil that is such a crutch at most Indian places. It's definitely a little pricier than your Chinese takeout, but the quality more than makes up for it. More than that, it's run solely by a husband/wife duo so you feel like you are eating in their home rather than at a restaurant. I mean what other restaurant in Augusta gives you FREE (not to mention delicious) dessert? Go, you will not be disappointed!

Excellent Food! Ordered Kashmiri Chicken (Came with Lemon Rice, Veggie of the Day - Aloo Gobi, Paarad, Raita Dip, and Brownie). Food was very flavorful loved every bit of it. Will I dine here again? YES, without a doubt. Clean and friendly environment, seems to be run by a couple (very polite and courteous couple). Keep up the good work.

First time to eat at India Cafe last night could not have been better. The food was great and the family that owns and prepares the food was so nice. I had the Lamb special and my wife had the Chilli Chicken Curry. Outstanding and reasonably priced. Looking forward to our return.

The food is really good and so is the service. I have tried the other Indian restaurants in augusta this one is my favorite. The amount of quantity they give is sufficient to fill up 2 people. Must try!!!!

Took my wife here for her birthday and had a great experience! Best Indian food in Augusta. If you're in a hurry don't eat here, but even the slow service didn't bother me since you know it's a husband and wife doing all the work. A tad pricey, but worth it! Definitely will be eating here again!

I'm Indian. Go eat here. Everything I've ever had here has been amazing! And I'm even comparing it to my momma's food. Their food does take a little while to arrive, but that's because it's being cooked fresh in the back. It's a sweet mom and pop place, you can't go wrong coming here!

    (5)
  • Janine A.

The food was delicious! So many sides- there was a ton to choose from. Beware it takes a long time to be served as its a two person operation (for ordering, serving, cooking and cleaning!)

Don't decide by where its located! Awesome authentic food. Very popular place. I will be back!

The service is very slow. The food is not that great I have had way better Indian than this place.

  • Emily R.

Thought the couple was very sweet but coming from out of town I felt there could have been a little more to the food for the prices- the somasa appetizer was awesome and the sauce was my favorite but two for $9 was a little pricey-- I was not impressed with the Chole Bhature. Overall if they improve on the presentation and increase the portions (decrease prices) that would be great- We have some pretty great family owned Indian restaurants in our area but this place could be great. Loved the brownie at the end :)

Amazing food! We had the lamb vindaloo with the garlic naan. Best Indian food I've had in a long long time. The bread pudding too is amazing.

Best Indian food I've ever eaten and one of the best restaurants of any kind in Augusta. Ms Mary and Sebastian make you feel like family and treat you as such. Every time I go in there I am greeted with such warm smiles and great conversation. The food is made with love. The specials are a home run every time and the home made ice creams and tandoori chicken wraps are my favorites.

  • Charms F.

Mango Chicken is a MUST! It taste very good. The complimentary dessert (chocolate brownie with ice cream on top) was very delish! However, the garlic naan did not taste good. I love Indian food and tried so many places but the one they have here is just blah. The place is small but decent. The service was fast (thinking there is only one server and I guess his wife is making all the food at the back). We enjoyed our dinner here and would love to go back. Walk-ins are welcome since they don't take reservations.

This place is AWESOME! The story is an interesting one: The owners are a husband and wife couple, the husband is supporting his wife's dream of opening a restaurant. Great story, no? The one downside, this place is not open ALL the time. I say that with a bit of sarcasm, this place is great, and it's so great that I wish it were open whenever I happen to want some delicious Indian food. That being said, it's only the husband and wife, so they are open sort of, on their schedule. Now to the good parts: The atmosphere is great, there is some bollywood music videos playing in the corner, but not all that loudly, so it wasn't disruptive in any way. The walls are decorated with nice family pictures and such, very comfortable, very warm and almost cozy. The menu was great, there were options for south Indian as well as north. The appetizers were great, featuring the classics and well as some chef-inspired creations. The service wasn't as slow as I was expecting. Was as fast as, say, Applebees? No. But it was more than acceptable. And he was very friendly!! And the food. My god! The food! Delicious all around. It's clear the chef has a passion for cooking. This isn't just random ingredients thrown together and served, this was made with love. In closing....well, I think I've said it all. Go! It's amazing!

This place has amazing food! The cook is talented and the lamb samosa is a must try. The restaurant is very small and dim, also quiet depending on how many people are dining in which can be awkward if you're chatting with your table. You feel like everyone can hear what you're saying lol. The staff is very friendly and the complimentary dessert is a nice touch. I will be dinning here again for sure.

This sweet little mom-and-pop shop is a treasure in Augusta. This is real home cooking and has been a great substitute for my mom's cooking while I've been in Augusta The best part is that if you order take-out, they give your random surprise extras. The veg combo plate is really good and a great deal for all the things that are included. If you like Indian food at all, you have to try this place!

Fantastic little gem that makes some incredible traditional Indian dishes. Great bold flavors and home made breads. Great option if you're looking for something other than burgers or bbq. Only reason it's not 5 stars is because the Sweet Tea is sub-par. I was surprised they even had it, but it wasn't that good. It's not expected at an Indian restaurant, so I would recommend they just do away with it.

  • David C.

If you are out for a slow evening and want great food this is the place. The menu is about the right size so you don't feel overwhelmed with too many options. I feel the prices are excellent for the portions given and the food is obviously freshly made and is cooked extremely well. Another nice thing is if you ask for your dish to be "spicy" they will spice it up for you without going over the top or charging extra. The brownie with ice cream was complimentary and a very nice ending. It was delicious. The star that. I take away is a bit of a combination of slow service, hard to get refills, and the wailing songs of ballywood int the background. Only so much screeching one can take. Really the majority of the loss in star is the "music" as if you order an appetizer (the humus was awesome) you really don't mind the wait. A definite try if you like indian food

  • Leanna C.

The reviews were definitely correct about the service but the food was quite average. It was not your sort of traditional Indian food you usually get at restaurants. The curry was very watery and they serve it on a bed of rice that didn't really taste like bismati rice. We ordered the Garlic naan and it tasted very dough-y and drenched with olive oil. The service was certainly slow but the owner/waiter was a very nice man and even gave us a complimentary home-made brownie with vanilla ice-cream (strange at an Indian rest but was good). I probably will not return because I prefer the creamier/thicker curry and would like better service for the money.

The flavor of everything is fantastic. Mango chicken curry with garlic naan and a taj lager to help with the heat of the dish. Yum.

Food was very good and tasted freshly prepared. Note that they will NOT bring you your check. Just walk up to the register and they will ring you out.

This is the most amazing indian food in Georgia that I have ever tasted. Having experimented with indian cuisine a little bit, I can say that there are two ways Indian food gets better tasting. One of them is to increase the oil and the other is to not be a miser with the spices. In this restaurant, you won't get something extremely oily (like many big indian restaurants in Atlanta) and you will get food whose spice is placed to give it the right flavor. The flavor that makes you think about your take home box because you couldn't finish the quantity on the spot and it is 12am and you figure, why not eat some of that great tasting indian food so I can fall asleep happy? Trust me, I'm the sunscreen :-) (borrowed line from a song but trust me, this food is GOOOOOOD - try the specials, they are ideal!). Different hours than most restaurants, but this is the hidden Indian gem of Augusta!

The food has a homely taste but is very delicious! The owners are kind and friendly and service is pretty fast. I had gone to the plaza several times before I actually saw the place open. But when I went in, it was pretty packed. Seemed like all regulars, as everyone chit-chatted with the owner. There was no server but he was able to handle everything as the place was not too big. Probably has a maximum occupancy of 30 or so. The decoration was a bit too overwhelming, as it seemed crammed with different things. There is a swing door between the kitchen and the dining hall, and the chef popped in to talk with some of the customers. The environment was quite friendly. I even saw a lady having dinner alone, something I don't like to do myself!

Great food, but slow service and only 1 waiter. Waiter was too busy to stop and listen to my requests. Looks like a couple runs it. No ice in drinks. Very spicy. I'd give it 5 stars if they could give me a large glass of iced tea to cool my spicy burnt mouth down. Or some milk! The food is awesome, if you like spicy.

Yelp led me here as the best food in Augusta. It did not let me down, I got the shrimp appetizer and the lamb vandaloo. Full of flavor and the right amount of heat behind it. Had to get the Taj beer because of the description, very funny but tastes similar to coors. Best part was a brownie and ice cream, FREE!!:). Will def be coming back next year. Very nice waiter.

If you are looking for Indian food in Augusta go here.... Yes its small, the hours are weird and the menu is small but that is what niche places are about right? I hit this place recently and was VERY happy with it, I had the Vindaloo and was surprised that is was made in the northern Indian way and also awesome in its own right. Also a bowl of something, didnt ask what it was just ate it (as us with the "Ducal Figure" do...its an SCA joke) After the end of my meal I was presented with a brownie and ice cream, warm and very very tasty not to mention...Free. Very much worth the trip if you are in Augusta.. GO I SAID!

Very tasty! I've been looking for a yummy Indian restaurant in the CSRA since The Curry Pot in Aiken closed down and this is it! We had the day's specials and were impressed--medium spiced. Complimentary warm homemade brownie with vanilla ice cream for desert topped off our delectable meal. Highly recommend if you are looking for homemade Indian food!!

Great indian food! Unique in my opinion. I thought I was going to get a lot of naan and little rice. This is southen indian food, there is less bread and more rice. The rice is also more flavorful since it is cooked with herbs and some veggies. They are also mainly vegetarian but do compromise by having some chicken and lamb dishes. The restaurant does not look like much from the outside, but it really was the best food I had in Augusta. Call ahead since they have odd hours.

Ben L. review is right on. This place is not your typical service was great, but food was ok. In fact its exactly the opposite. However where the service lacks it makes up for it in knowing your in direct communication with the kitchen. The husband of the dynamic duo, is in fact a physician helping his wife achieve her dreams. How great is that? On to the food. I have eaten at every indian establishment in South Carolina and this one is right up there. What set it appart from the mexican staffed kitchens of the several of the others i have been to, is the love that comes through your taste buds. You can just tell with the subtleness of spice and such that this is not food prepared by a parrot in the kitchen that was showed how to make something. This food, albeit Indian, screams homemade. All I can say is you should bypass the places that have an indian owner up front greeting the customers, and enjoy a meal cooked by someone who was brought up cooking the fare offered.

Okay. First tip. This place is run by two people so you HAVE to be aware of that before going here. Also, do not come here if you are already hungry or at the very least bring a snack as it can take a very long time to get your food. The menu is minimal with not a lot to choose from. However, the food is VERY good. The best pakora I've eaten to date! The atmosphere is unique and corky. The have bollywood videos playing from tons of my favorite moves which was fun to watch while you wait. The cons? Not enough water. And you REALLY need water when you eat indian food. Also, no air conditioning. It made it kinda uncomfortable but funny at the same time. I don't know. This place is unique. You can't come here thinking it's gonna be like a regular staffed restaurant. Also, the prices were really good for what you got. I'm not sure I'd go back. But it's definitely worth eating at at least once while your here.

It was like I found my way into a Madrasi household and a good friend's mother was serving me dinner. The food had to be a family recipe and the service reminded me of my grandmother (she kept wanting to feed me more saying something about how thin I looked, which is an obvious lie). But if you want not just Indian food but an Indian experience, go eat here. Go right now.

India Cafe is my favorite restaurant in Augusta and I just love it. As the other reviews state, the food is authentic, reasonably priced, and most importantly -- absolutely delicious. Yes, you will wait awhile for your food (only two people running the restaurant) but it is SO worth the wait !! Just know that going in. My other trick is to show up at 5:30 (when they open) before they get busy. Also, sometimes I'll call for takeout and allow an hour and that works pretty well too. The other thing I have to say is that over the years of eating here, I have gotten to know the owners who are wonderful people and who have gone out of their way to make me feel welcome. They greet me by name and it feels so good to eat at their place. You do feel part of the family in a way ! I have brought many friends and family to India Cafe over the years, and have never been disappointed. If you are looking for a chain restaurant experience, you won't find it here, and I say thank goodness. India Cafe is quirky, unique and wonderful. The food is delicious and eating there (for us) is like a visit to a friendly corner of India, right here in Augusta. Highly, highly recommended!

We love this place! If you have food restrictions, it may not be the place for you, as most of the cooking seems to be done in large batches before the restaurant opens for the evening, but if you can handle that, you will find your tastebuds are rewarded by the wonderful offerings. We have tried nearly everything on the menu and never come away disappointed. The owners are kind, friendly people, who make you feel like a family member visiting from far away. They are low key about service, but very responsive to requests.

  • Jeff M.

This place is excellent. The food here is incredible which is the most important thing. You will wait a long time, you will have to choose from a 'limited' menu which is cooked by 1 of the 2 people who work here. I ordered take out, it took nearly an hour, but I would gladly wait that long again in the future. The portions are generous, the prices are low, the atmosphere inside is perfect. Garlic Naan, on point, Chicken Biriyani, on point, they even make some killer shrimp. Oh, and I even got a free brownie for dessert with my to-go order. Well played, India Cafe, well played.

What a hidden gem for Indian food here in Augusta! Tucked back off of Washington Rd in a shopping center that you barely even can tell is back behind the Fridays (or Applebees, whatever they're all the same), this restaurant is apparently run by a husband and wife team who do the cooking and serving. This is authentic and delicious! The serving sizes are huge; we had leftovers for 2 meals each! We both went with the vegetarian combos simply to try the most dishes at once, and they were all the best I've had here in Augusta, and the best I've had in a long time. There are a couple of other decent Indian restaurants in town, but any fan of Indian cuisine NEEDS to try India Cafe to taste just how much better it is than the others.

  • Rachel N.

Both the food and the service are better than Bombay Central or Taj. India Cafe is run by an Indian couple who make you feel like your eating in their own home. I requested for them bring on the hot spices because I love my spicy food and it was PERFECT! Hot, but in a flavorful way, not over powering. My boyfriend got the vegetable plate. Everything was fresh and exquisitely spiced. They give you so much food that it covered our lunch the next day and prices are VERY reasonable. I was a little worried about the ambiance from the outside since it is in the back of a shopping center, however on the inside there are beautiful family photos from their years in India and they play awesome Bollywood movies.

We thought we were spoiled from Ambrosia in Monterey by their delicious food & affordable lunch buffet, until we came here. We had the chef's specials & wow, they were so good. We don't think the naan is cooked in a tandoor oven but it is still very good & seasoned quite well. I tried the garlic & wow, yum! We also got to try a desert which was a fresh chocolate brownie covered in some sweet vanilla cream sauce- it was mouth watering! The portions are quite large & very affordable. The dim lighting & decor also give this place a very comfortable feel. We can't wait to go back! Loved this place!
