Still the best baker in town (get the croissants.), though now h+f is giving some actual competition. I have no idea why the reviews are so much lower than they should be but it seems like it's not based on the quality of the food. That should be enough to get you in the door and see if your experience with the service will be positive like mine has been. Of course that requires they will be open during the hours you can go. Which is sadly unlikely.

As many have said: don't go for friendly customer service - go for the food. I've only tried their bread, not sandwiches, and the bread is delicious. Loaves are huge and the price is very fair. Interacting with the staff is awkward - just go in, get your food and head on out. You may have to call out for help as they don't seem to acknowledge the bell on the door when they are working in the back area. It's almost as though they resent the fact that they have to interact with customers which... can't blame them really, haha.

I'm visiting from Seattle, WA. Very nice place with great hospitality. Inside could be more welcoming and more put together. All in all some of the best bread I've ever had. Would recommend to anyone.

Charming - in Amsterdam near Red Light Cafe - the real deal. Terrific baguettes and delicious scones - plan to return for lunch and tAke home baguettes again soon.

Frankly, not that great. Since I returned from 9 months living in Germany I've been on the lookout for a true European baguette. And this was not it. The crust was nice and hard, but the inside was spongy and tasteless. I'd rather have a $.99 you-bake-it loaf from Kroger. My dad got the everything bagel and it tasted sort of foul, like "something" out of "everything" didn't belong. And the bagel was rather stale. I'd recommend the Great Harvest Bread Company at the corner of Briarcliff & LaVista instead. That place has good bread.

I had high expectations after trying their whole wheat bread at Rise N Dine. My wife and I went in for lunch and ordered two sandwiches--a tuna and an Italian sub--along with a loaf of sourdough. We're from California so we've had the kind of sourdough that Southerners can only dream of, and I'll admit the sourdough was pretty good--almost as good as Boudin. The sandwiches, however, were terrible. The tuna sandwich was supposed to be on focaccia, but it was a focaccia BUN very much like a hamburger bun, and nothing like the heavy, oily focaccia you'd usually expect. The Italian sub had a weird sauce on it that felt like eating nettles--kind of a prickly sensation in the mouth. The ingredients just didn't work together. How do you screw up two of the staples of the sandwich world? It's like screwing up PB+J in my opinion. They don't make the sandwiches at the counter which is a no-no in the deli business--even Subway lets you watch the preparation. The shopping area at Amsterdam Walk is kind of nice but walking inside Bread Garden was a total failure--totally run down, dingy lighting, and lots of flies. We were the only people there during lunch time. Having just driven past Alon's, which was crowded, I had hoped there would at least be a few patrons here but I don't think it's an inviting environment. Overall it felt dirty and the sandwiches were so bad I have no reason to go back. The two stars are for the bread itself, which is really good, but I'll stick with Alon's from now on.

The best foccacia I've ever tasted! The Bread Garden is a small, unappealing hole-in-the-wall that serves up some of the best breads and sweets in Midtown, hands down. Their focaccia, cupcakes, chocolate loaves, and biscotti is definitely to die for and always fresh! The sandwiches are customized as you like them, usually low on fillings but the fresh aroma and taste of the bread is sure to please. The store owner is an absolute nutcase. Perhaps that's why I love her so much. She does everything on her own time, and rambles on her soapbox for as long as you let her :o). Learn some patience and the Bread Garden will be a lovely experience!

Disclaimer: I ordered a Bread Garden sandwich via Zifty, so I didn't have to deal with a crazy owner or surly staff. I think it's a win win. The italian sandwich was stellar. Truly truly awesome, with thick crunchy bread, fresh toppings, and a hint of spice in some sort of pesto spread. Reminds me of the subs from Jettie's back in DC that were my all-time fave. For $9.89 via Zifty you get a HUGE sandwich (enough for 2 meals) two cookies, and chips (Zapps chips, not crappy Lays or somethin'). I'm annoyed that it is 6 cents under the minimum $9.95 requirement, but that's Zifty's issue, not Bread Garden's. And seriously, tacking on a Chocolate Pink cupcake or some Yogurberry to your order is worth it for getting a truly delicious sandwich delivered to your door, especially if the staff here is as bad as they say.

Confirm the bleach smell and the crazy-town customer service. The bread is good, but my wife says it smells of bleach. Whole foods baguette is probably still my go to until Midtown gets a better bakery.

Great bread selection. The sandwiches were pretty good. Good choice if you're in that neck of the woods.

Totally underwhelmed. Part of me hates to go against all the rave reviews courtesy of "Atlanta" magazine, which are extremely faded and prominently (yet crookedly) displayed on the wall at The Bread Garden, but part of me loves being honest. I went twice in three days (only due to severe time restraints and convenience) and spent a lot of quality time by myself in the shop. No one greets you upon your entrance despite the annoyance of a ringing bell. And no one appears from behind the wall for several minutes. Yet they don't mind your eavesdropping on their Spanglish conversations. Once human contact was initiated, the service was creepy. I felt like I was invading their private space. I have no idea how this place continues to exist considering its poor service and long list of rules. Sandwiches are only made at certain times. Cash or check only. A very limited number of menu options. Oh, and get this. It gets even better. While I was waiting for my sandwich (which took 12 minutes despite my being the only one there), I picked up the newspaper. It was from January 31 -- a month ago! And that sums up my experiences perfectly. My visits to TBG were creepy and felt a little Twilight Zone. Nothing on the counter looked appetizing. When have I not been tempted by cookies and cupcakes? Oh, when I'm at TBG. The bread was fair to good, but I'd rather deprive myself of decent bread than to reenter the door with the bell.

After reading a lot of these reviews about the bell and the service I sort of vigorously (and now in retrospect obnoxiously) opened and closed the door just to make sure she heard me. The woman who appeared from behind the wall was definitely not pleasant--I don't think she was the owner. She seemed disgruntled. Maybe because there was so much jingle jangling on my way in. The space itself, decor and whatnot leaves something to be desired--but I can't say it bothered me much. I think I only do that comparative decor complaining when it comes to corporate chain store specs. Anyway, I got the Italian loaf. The lady popped it in a bag, gave me my change and retreated behind the mysterious wall again pretty quickly. The bread was huge and delicious. I probably gobbled half of the loaf up on my way home. I will return--and maybe I'll be a little quieter next time.

Best takeout sandwiches in ATL. I use these guys to cater corporate events and for family picnics at the park. The Italian with pesto totally rocks - be sure to add some roasted red peppers for a real treat. If they have any the cupcakes on hand, buy em, cuz they are out of this world (and messy).

This is a terrible place and it's in a strange, isolated location. I don't think I will ever go back. There's a toxic, chemical smell to the shop that an employee, when I questioned her, thought could be bleach, although she said she wasn't able to smell it. I bought a baguette which wasn't very authentic. It wasn't very good bread at all. And it seemed to be infused with the awful smell of bleach. There are much better, friendlier places to buy very good bread in Atlanta. Savor in Peachtree Battle carries H&F Bakery items that are excellent. Star Provisions has a wonderful bakery.

Scrumptious baked goods in the Highlands. I love her focaccia, and I haven't had a sandwich I didn't like from here.

The sandwichs are good, but the owner is a bit crazy and rude. She screams at her employees in front of customers and does not think about what she is saying before she speaks.... Also, the place needs a good cleaning. I doubt I will ever go back!!! Not sure what all the fuss is about.

Tucked away on Amsterdam Walk (which I didn't even know existed), is Bread Garden. You walk in and it's just a counter with some uncovered loaves on a rack and little nick-nacks (cookies, cupcakes, foccacia pizza slices) in the front cases. Needless to say, it all looked like amazing bread. However, I actually came for a turkey sandwich and this is what happened. Walk in the door, and a bell rings behind me. Nobody behind the counter, much like Kristina H's review. I came in at 11:20 and noticed a sign on the wall that said no sandwiches until 11:30. I was fine with that. So I told the lady, who eventually came out, I wanted a sandwich and she gave me a hard time and I explained to her that I had some time to wait till it was convenient for her. After placing my order, I noticed another notice on the counter saying cash or check only. I asked where the nearest ATM was and left her with my order only to come back, 15 minutes later, to nobody at the counter again. I then peered around the corner to see the employees including said woman staring at me, but not offering help. I thought, "OK, they must be making my sandwich." So I waited...and waited...and waited. Finally the lady comes out and says, "Oh I wasn't sure if you were coming back, so we held off on the sandwich." I told her that's what I was there for and waited another five minutes for her to make the sandwich. So long lunch break... The lady, all in all, wasn't friendly. Eventually she warmed up to the Ear's charm, but goodness, it took long enough and I'm sure she is the same one mentioned in Kristina H's review. OH! And the sandwich sucked. Slathered in honey mustard, and very light on the turkey. Good bread and cheese however. The bread was all very cheaply priced for a specialty shop like this in midtown. I will go back for bread. I'm giving it 3 stars on the basis that I didn't stick with the mainstay of the shop...bread. Otherwise my experience was about a 2 at best.

Outstanding crusty loaves. A few options have room to improve but there are some superstars here. Talented baker.

Small storefront bakery in the Amsterdam Walk complex. For quality breads at great prices, this is the place to go. As a bit of a bread purist, I have not ventured into the relm of the flavored (vegetables/herbs etc...) products. But I can tell you that the baguettes and ciabatta loaves are the best you will find in the area (Alon's is my vote for second place).

I'd seen stellar reviews of Bread Garden since moving to Atlanta several years ago and finally stopped by this week. It's in the same strip on Amsterdam Walk as Cook's Warehouse, Atlanta's best independent outpost for cookware (although Sur la Table's entry into Atlanta, despite location at Perimeter Mall, is great for serious cooks as well). I have to say, I don't get it. First, I walked into the store and no one was at the counter. I don't mind waiting but it took a bit for someone to emerge from the back room and when she did, she wasn't overwhelmingly friendly. Okay...I have worked in retail and understand that sometimes you just aren't having a good day. And, in my experience, patronizing local businesses sometimes means not getting the consistent corporate "friendliness" that is demanded of employees who are often earning minimum wage (Hey, if you're not earning a decent wage, I can understand why you're bitter and waiting on me is not the most ecstatic moment of your day.). Anyway, I'm a baker and to my eye the bread looked strangely Fisher-Price uniform. Yes, I'm a food snob. I'm used to bread from Tartine and Boulangerie in San Francisco. I've baked my share of bread from James Beard and Bernard Clayton. Anyway, as soon as she handed me my oversized Tuscan Loaf I knew it wouldn't be good. It was lightweight and the crust just didn't look inviting. But all those swoon-worthy raves about it! I withheld my evaluation, got my bread home and sliced off a piece. It wasn't good...at all. No flavor, lightweight, one-dimensional crumb. I could have gotten this bread at Publix (or, dare I say, Kroger). The search continues.
