Great atmosphere in a fantastic area with a decent draft beer selection! I had the Beef, Spinach, and Mushroom Genki Specialty Bowl and the crunchy spinach was a delightful surprise! We also ordered the noodles which were excellent. The prices are reasonable for the wonderful atmosphere and food. I will return!

Pro: open bar area looking out onto the street Cons: service, food, the whole experience We bought the groupon deal for 2, but there were 4 in our party. When we walked in, we asked the host we can use 2 groupons at our table even though it does say 1 per table. The host went to ask the manager who was also the bartender. We were seated and the manager/bartender rudely and condescendingly told us, "it says only one per table." So we said we'll just sit at a separate table, and he told us, "I saw you guys walk in together so you can't use it." I was ready to walk out at this point, but we had the groupons we had to use. We ordered the edamame as a starter (it was part of the Thursday special for ladies, but we couldn't tell which appetizers were half off). It was undercooked. The sushi was one of the worst I've ever had. It was even worse than grocery prepackaged sushi. I ordered soba noodles, and it was overcooked. Not to brag, but I always make edamame and soba noodles at home and it's not that hard to get it right. The desserts from the groupon menu (fried Oreos and Napoleon) were weird and tasted artificial. Our server wasn't too horrible, but he wasn't attentive enough to refill our waters. Never again.

I've yet the opportunity to dine at the actual Genki restaurant (there's a Buckhead and Virginia Highlands location), but I've seen this food truck around town quite a bit lately - and if you know me you know I love sushi. LOVE. I've seen a few pictures of their finished dishes online and I was pretty impressed with the presentation - their menu will make you borderline salivate. I caught 'Genki To-Go' at the "Brookhaven Diner" - the Wednesday night food truck round up at Blackburn Park, and it was one of the busier trucks so all signs looked good. I chose to order the "Katsu Don" w/ fried chicken ($8.95) - it's essentially a rice bowl (with your choice of white or brown, topped egg, onions, scallions, red ginger, and shredded nori; and I couldn't walk away without trying their sushi, so I also ordered the Genki Tuna roll ($9.95; flash fried tuna topped with Japanese mayo and sriracha). Overall, I have to admit I left disappointed. The rice bowl was decent, the katsu was just not up to par - the heat from the rice made it soggy so it lost a lot of a crisp, which is crucial for katsu; if you're to order this dish beef may be a better option. I liked the sushi quite a bit more, and it had just the right dollop of sriracha for flavor without making it too spicy for my weak taste buds. The tuna was nice and it looked great - who knew sushi from a truck could turn out so well? Genki is a bit pricier on average in comparison to the other food trucks: The majority of the entrees are $10, side items range from $3 - $6, and there's a small selection of sushi on the menu for $7. If you're interested, their food truck schedule is available on their website: genkiatl.com

Wow had the BEST portobello mushroom salad. It has crispy spinach NOMZ! The soba was too soggy but the nigiri was great. Also the Horin Sake was delicious. Loved the casual rock n' roll vibe. Not pretentious. Happy Valentine's.

Great location. Love the open window. Average wine list. Food was average...what I'd expect from a chain. Take cash when you visit this location though. Saturday I went with a friend. Our check was $79.71. My half was $35. Our waitress was wonderful. She was getting our checks from us and her "manager" walks up, snatches the checks from her, and tells her to do something. She runs off. He heads off with our checks. He brings the checks back and charged us both $79.91 each. I run him down and tell him his error. He's half listening. I just got off the phone with the fraud unit at Bank of America. That manager put several charges on my card: $95, $49, and $79.71. USE CASH AND DISCRETION AT THIS LOCATION.

This wasn't my favorite joint. While the location is supreme - lovely V. Highlands with a street facing, open window eating bar and really nice decor - I would say this place disappointed. One, my server... an older gentleman that didn't provide his name, was distant, cold, and at times even rude. This was really off putting. The menu that details the lunch specials was not well done. I consider myself of average intelligence, but I couldn't figure out what came with what, and this seemed to really irritate my server. I can't ask questions? You aren't going to try to help me figure out this extremely confusing menu without becoming frustrated with me? My behavior was polite and kind, there was no reason for him to become so flustered by it! Secondly, the food was really disappointing. I think I got a Dynamite Roll special that (as my server haughtily explained) came with a choice of salad or miso, so I got miso. The miso was ABSOLUTELY terrible! I have never had soup so bland! Even Ru Sans has better tasting miso! It completely lacked any miso flavor - didn't even taste like any broth I've ever had! I had to load it with coconut aminos and sriracha to even get a slight flavor. And the roll, I usually don't like rolls... I prefer sashimi - was terribly disappointing as well. Falling apart. Lacking in any bold flavors. Tiny, tiny chunks of some unidentified fish. Honestly I don't think I'll ever go here again unless someone pays for me. So many better options in this city, not to mention on that block!

My firs trip to Genki was a little out of the ordinary because I was with a birthday group of about 12 people. Dinning in groups this large is always different from having a meal with one or a few other people. I have to give a big high five to our waiter because he did a great job. Though there were times when a water didn't make it to the table or a fork went forgotten, overall he took really good care of us. Genki doesn't seat large parties until everyone has arrived. I feel like this is always problematic because coordinating that many schedules is tricky. They let us sit down even though we were still missing two friends. The highlands Genki is a relatively small, compact space. It is best for groups of 2-4 because a majority of the seating is at the sushi bar. There are a few tables on the back patio and for large groups, they do take reservations. People ordered a range of things from rice bowls to regular sushi to salads to noodles to over the top sushi creations. Everyone seemed happy with their orders. I opted for a seaweed salad and a vegetarian roll filled with beets, spinach, cucumber and tofu. All the rolls are ten pieces and they have about 50 different options. The birthday girl did a fun Saki Bomb and she received a complementary dessert. The waiter lead us in a chant for her Saki Bomb and he was really helpful when it came to splitting up the checks. It was also pretty hot where we were sitting and he let us prop open the back door. Parking can be hit or miss in this area. We were lucky enough to get a spot right in front of the restaurant. You pay at the street machines and it is $2 an hour. They have complementary valet behind the building and across the street for $6, but you must get your keys back by 10 pm on weekdays. There is also parking on the surrounding streets but on busy nights you can circle the block for ages before you find one. Genki also does delivery and to-go sushi. I would absolutely take advantage of this service and would like to try it again under more normal circumstances.

This place easily gets five stars for atmosphere. It's beautiful and unique. I ordered all sushi in a take out order. The servers were attentive and nice, though it might be because it was a slow night and they were just standing around the lobby area without much to do. The sushi looked incredible. I spent over $80 to surprise my boyfriend with his favorite type of food when he got home from work. I hurried home and placed it all out and he was impressed by how pretty the rolls were. However, we were generally unimpressed overall, as everything was without much flavor and the eel tasted old. I'm not sure which fish it was, but in a couple of the rolls, there was a very tough fish, which should not be the case since it was raw. I won't go back. For the price, I know of far better places.

My boyfriend and I were looking for a fun sushi place on a Wednesday night several weeks ago and stumbled across this restaurant - much to our surprise, Wednesday also happens to be Wine Night and Trivia at Genki. Needless to say, we've been back for several more Wednesdays, to the point that the wait staff started recognizing us! The servers we've had are extremely personable and friendly and the atmosphere is a lot of fun. I can't say the sushi is the absolute best I've ever had but they have a good selection and it tastes fresh and is ready in just a few minutes. If you are a huge sushi connoisseur this might not be your top choice but if you enjoy tasty sushi and a fun atmosphere, I definitely recommend, especially on Wine Wednesdays!

Decent sushi in a great location. If you can check out their nightly specials it is worth it. The staff seem to have your typical Va-Hi "I don't give a F" attitude. For the same price you can go to Sushi House Hayakawa up Buford highway and get much better quality fish and a much more authentic experience.

Had a great experience on a Saturday night. I will be honest that we weren't excited bc it didn't seem like a Sat night spot but we were wrong! Sat on the back patio and had the healthiest and most delicious tuna dishes ever. Ordered the summer breeze which was tuna tartare style and included raw tuna, fresh cucumber slices and sweet mango and pineapple with homemade chips for scooping. Soooo scrumptious! We are going back this week bc we need more. We also had a side of udon noodles and fried rice. Perfection!

Not too exciting ,,, average food, ok service and if you are not going to offer the specials then take the ad off the table. We tried a variety of sushi rolls and apps and nothing was really outstanding or had much flavor. Examples include: spicy tuna was not spicy and very "mushy" and a weird sauce on one roll that tasted like packaged duck sauce. Too many great sushi/noodle places in Atlanta to waste a meal here again.

    1. The service left a lot to be desired. She obviously did not want to be there. They started turning away couples 45 minutes before they closed. We were sitting on the back patio and they turned off all the music and TVs even though people were still watching or listening while they ate. Very rude. Little to no thought about the customers. We actually felt obligated to pack our own food up and scram because it was more than obvious we weren't welcome there anymore. 2. The food is mediocre at best. I had yakisoba with what was supposed to be medium rare tuna. It made me understand Jessica Simpson's tuna/chicken confusion. It was tuna...I think. But not what is expected from any Asian restaurant. My boyfriend ordered udon noodle soup and actually got sick from it when we got back. I can see how this place could appeal to a certain clientele but I was unimpressed. I've had better service and food from Ru Sans. If you're looking for a good noodle or sushi place...I recommend Miso Izakaya. It's actually a bit cheaper for way better quality and impeccable service. I won't be going back. Ever.

The only Genki worth going to. I have been to the Roswell Road and Buckhead locations, and this one is by far the best. A little pricy for sushi rolls that aren't that big, but seriously SO good!!

The chicken teriakki with ramen noodles was incredible but the bagel sushi was just alright. The servers were very attentive. We liked sitting at the window and watching people walk by. The ladies night wine was really good too.

Unfortunately, the only thing worth consuming was the prepackaged imported beer. And the filtered water. Not only was the food bad, but the service was terrible. Half the dishes that came to our table were not what we ordered. What did come to our table was oily, burnt balls of what resembled broccoli. Whilst ordering dishes, our waitress, Rosie, would walk off and we witnessed her constantly serving dishes to the wrong table. She also did not know what was on the menu, obvious in all the wrong dishes appearing at our table. It was also extremely over priced for the quality of the food. I highly recommend anyone who is considering having a meal here to think twice and walk away. Worst meal I have had in a very, very long time

Note- this review is only for the sushi. I haven't tried any other dishes. The location and decor are great. When the weather is nice, sitting at the bar looking out into the VaHi streets is pretty sweet. The sushi though, is not high quality. We ordered 6 pieces of salmon nigiri ($1 special on Sunday), a California roll, and a Florida roll (cucumber, avocado, yellowtail, and tuna). The flavor was solid, but the sushi was prepared sloppily. The pieces varied in size, from really thick to wafer thin. The salmon for the nigiri was really thin and not sliced correctly. I know this sounds pretentious, but presentation is a critical aspect of sushi. If you want cheap sushi, go during one of their specials ($1 nigiri on Sundays), however if you want quality sushi at a reasonable price walk the extra extra quarter mile and try Mali instead.

My fiancé and I had been cooped up in our house for a couple of days after the Snowjam of 2014 and were craving sushi. I had purchased a groupon for this place in order to force us to try a new sushi place. The menu was fixed for the group and very limited. The edemama was dressed up with a little red pepper added to it and miso was warm but only had little pieces of tofu and seaweed in it. We typically do not eat fried sushi, but ordered the super crunch roll since there was a limited sushi menu. It was not super and had no crunch. We also ordered the rainbow roll which was ok but not melting in my mouth. The bar tender was attentive and introduced us to a new cold, unfiltered sake called rock that was the best part of the evening. My fiancé and I will not be back to try the rest of the menu.

Yuk! It takes a lot to turn me off to a place but Genki fell so below my expectations that I can safely say I will never return. It's a shame too because the location is great, but location isn't everything... Between my partner and I we had one returned mojito, 2 forgotten bowls of miso soup, one avocado sushi roll served with brown avocado, one veggie roll missing a very key ingredient, and some over- salted, withered edamame. When we finally did get our miso soup after asking for it again, it tasted like chicken broth not the standard soy broth that miso soup is supposed to be made of. I can count on one hand the number of times I have sent something back at a restaurant but I couldn't really stomach anything that Genki was serving up last night. This was my second experience at this location and I have to say something has gone terribly wrong since they opened. The first time I went the food and service were fantastic. Maybe it was an off night for them...? The server was apologetic and comped our meal and I did appreciate this but I would have much rather had a quality experience. Luckily, Noche is right around the corner so I was able to drown my sorrows in Sangria and call it a night.

Sushi was fresh and service was quick. Japanese BBQ was tasty, but vegetables tucked underneath were limp. We arrived 5pm on Saturday before the crowds, but by 6pm when we left people were waiting for tables. A little too dark to eat sushi, if you want to see what you are eating. I will try again, but another location.

Great place for affordable rolls or gigantic noodle bowls! Their "build your own" bowl option can easily last 2 - 3 meals for me It's especially great on half off wine Wednesdays. I much prefer this to the perpetually noisy/dingy Ru Sans on Piedmont. Ambience is great, food is consistent and service has never been a problem.

I had heard good things so I had high hopes - but disappointed once again. I went in on a Friday for lunch. At 12:10pm I was only the 2nd person into the place - bad sign. And yet I found the floor, tables, and especially the bar dirty and sticky - with lots of old food bits - like it had never been cleaned from the previous evening. I sat and the bar - the one waiter in the place looked at me with puzzlement - I had to actually ask him to bring me a menu. The one I received was covered with crude - again not wiped down. I found the sushi side of the menu to have just too many rolls with cream cheese and heavy, sweet sauces - American Sushi. Since I was at the bar, I could watch the sushi being made - by the all Hispanic/Latino chefs - where was the trained sushi chef? I order a standard spicy tuna roll and some sushi nigiri to sample the menu. For being only two people in the place, it took a long time to get my order. The waiter placed the plate in front of me and then I had to ask for chopsticks, a napkin, and soy sauce - they had never been provided. I found the roll very loosely rolled to make it appear larger but still very small just the same. The tuna tasted cheap - like Publix sushi. On the sushi nigiri, the fish appeared dull and old - not shiny and fresh like a high quality place. And no flavor - like it had been in the refrigerator too long. I ordered a second roll as the serving had been extremely small - a dynamite roll - what I got was mostly vegetables, very little of completely tasteless fish and covered with a sickly sweet sauce. Somehow I get the feeling that this place is not really trying to be authentic sushi - a heavy emphasis on the bar and the young VAHI evening crowd - cream cheese sushi for people who do not know any better. Cute named rolls with very little flavor other than the sweet sauces on top of them. Now that I am Yelp - I realize I should have come here first - look at the reviews where the people actually liked the food - they are NOT describing sushi - Jalapenos? Fried Calamari? Fried Spinach? Beer Lists? Mixed Drinks? Live Music? In review - dirty establishment, slow service, and expensive but tasteless sushi - if you want this quality - try Publix. Before I ever went back I would also need to see evidence of a big cleaning - this place was just too dirty to enjoy my lunch.

It took me a while to come here due to all the negative reviews, but decided to come after being introduced to the food at taste of the highlands. I loved the bite they were offering so checked the place out on a Sunday. I gotta say, this place is pretty swank. Nice asian loungy decor, an ample menu, and the awesome weekly deals don't hurt either. On Tuesdays (va hi location only) and Sundays (all locations) they have $5 spicy tuna or california rolls, $1 nigiri, and sake and beer specials. The bf and I had a feast and it was really affordable. The spicy tuna was on point and the salmon nigiri was very fresh. The bf also ordered the I heart sushi from the regular menu and it was one of those over the top, fish inside and outside, crunchy bits, drizzles of this and that kind of roll. It was delicious, but a little over the top for me. Since service seems to have been an issue in the past, I'll say that our server was efficient and polite both times we visited (it was the same server). The water was being refilled regularly, the food came out when it should, everything went smoothly. Also, there was no attitude regarding me asking details about the special, since that can be an issue sometimes. It was pretty slow when we went though, so maybe it changes when it's busy. We will be here again many times because of the atmosphere, solid sushi options, and the really great value on specials.

Location and ambience are fabulous (Window seats are awesome for people watching). Sushi is ok and what I mean by that is that is that it's not amazing and not bad either, but average. I love sushi and have yet to really find anywhere that is "great" other than Goldfish and going OTP isn't optimal. Anyway, the rib appetizer was good and sushi was fine. I think this place would get much more traction and be higher on the list if the prices where just a tad lower to balance out the quality of the food. Service is good as well, but I'm sure they need to pay for the high rent being in such a great location. I'll visit again in the future, but I'm sure there has to be better stuff out there. If the sushi is amazing, then price isn't an issue - after all we are eating "raw fish" so wouldn't we want it to be the best quality possible.

RUDE and under-stocked. Went for dinner and no less than three times our server eventually came back to us to tell us they were out of an item they needed to make what we ordered - this occurred on both food and beverage we ordered. The sushi was OK (not great - there is far better sushi in atlanta for about half the price ) - service was not good and to top it of within 2 minutes of us paying our $175 check the staff threw all the house lights on full bright and then disappeared into the back -this included both the host and serving staff as well as the sushi chef.. We were one of the last tables in the restaurant but it was not even 10 pm yet so were surprised at the rude manner in which they signaled to us it was time to leave within only a minute or two of whipping the check off the table - very unprofessional of the staff and no way to treat your customer! With the staff disappearing we let ourselves out of the restaurant! WOULD NOT RECOMMEND AND WILL NOT BE GOING BACK!!

I've wandered past Genki many a time while strolling around the Highlands, but last night, I finally tried it out while visiting a friend who lives there. We didn't arrive until past 8:30 but there was still a good crowd for a Wednesday night plus a live musician - and he was actually good, which is a shocker by itself. So anyhoo, we walked in and were seated more towards the back at one of the banquettes along the wall. The spot was perfect because the music carried but wasn't overpowering; meaning a conversation could be conducted minus the shouting. And the decor is very cool - giant Japanese drums hang from the ceiling, fish tanks full of tropical fish abound, the front windows open up in warm weather so diners can sit at the window counter and soak in the outdoors, and the seating is a good mixture of booths and tables with the bar running unobtrusively along one side. Our waitress was very prompt in introducing herself to us, getting our drink orders and keeping our glasses refilled during the evening. She also brought out complimentary samples of the restaurant's soba noodles and sauce before our salads arrived, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I'll order me some of those on a return trip. The sushi menu was quite impressive - lots of different roll combinations, but thankfully not a lot of the deep fried variety. Tempura has its place, but when more than half the menu is battered and fried, it makes me question the authenticity and freshness of the ingredients. This, I was liking though. In addition to the sushi rolls, they offered rice bowls with all kinds of ingredients I'd be eager to try on another occasion. So for our meal, we ordered the seaweed and ginger salad to start. Both were pretty large portions for being deemed "small" by the menu, and both were also tasty although the ginger salad was a little heavy on the vinigarette. For the main course, we ordered three rolls to share: the drunken eel, Alaskan, and dragon rolls. It was plenty - each roll had 10 pieces to it and all three were served very artfully on a large platter with a nice arrangement of wasabi, ginger and cucumber slices to one side. They were delicious. My favorite was the dragon roll and then the drunken eel. In the end, we were both quite satisfied and declined dessert this time around. I enjoyed it a lot though and would definitely come back in the future, and not just because I love the Highlands already.

Our sushi was gross (warm, rubbery, and the fish seemed old), they screwed up both our order and our bill, and it was all still outrageously expensive. In a nutshell: will not return.

Not the best sushi I tried, like something was missing.. prices are low.. except for the beer.. they charge 10$ for Sapporo 22oz.... (japanese beer from Canada).. outrageous. . When the weather is nice-ask for the table on their back porch.

Just a quick local sushi trip resulted in a pretty nice dinner experience. We went out to grab sushi and enjoy a seat that opened to Highland. It was a nice soft evening with a tasty sashimi and sushi plate, a beer, and a little edamame. I'll be back.

I came here with a large group and found the staff very accommodating and welcoming. Additionally, the food was excellent and our server, Reid, went above and beyond to make the experience special. Highly recommended!

I went here over a year a go with a Groupon. I hadn't been back since and thought it might be nice to stop in for dessert because I was craving fried ice cream. I gave in to temptation and ordered more than dessert. I now realize why I hadn't been back. Service was cold. He walked away before I could request something I needed and seemed annoyed when I made such requests. Food was very mediocre. Sushi rice was falling off before I could pick it up and drop it onto my share plate. Come on. This is the one thing you're supposed to do right. If you want your Kroger sushi dressed up and overpriced, then this is your place to go. We won't be coming back.

So I rolled in here last night around 9:30ish for a late dinner with my companion before heading out to the surrounding watering holes for the evening. Place had sexy vibrant vibe with a funky Asian decor - we lucked out and got an outside table on the patio. Mark that one down as a "Win". Cold Unfiltered Sake. Score. Ended up ordering the appropriatly named "Virginia Highland Roll" to which the owner had actually personally came by our table with samples of this very roll...Post-me ordering it. Ahi Tuna & Mango topped with Jalapenos. Are you serious? Order was off the hook - an explosion of diverse flavors into my mouth. My seasoned companion got this Snow Crab wrapped in an actual cucumber - - presentation was Iron Chef appropiate. All in all this is a ccol spot. Being a few blocks from my house makes this North Highland locale something that bring a smile to face & and a location I could see myself running up to middle of the week when I don't feel like cooking. Good find.

This review is primarily based on the lunch menu and specials. Knowing I needed a quick lunch stop, my friend and I decided to meander by way of the Highlands. Attempting to eat at El Taco, our hopes were shot down by inconvenient opening hours. We strolled on down to Genki and there were plenty of people sitting in the open-windowed view. I immediately thought this was going to be a great place for lunch. We were seated and served very quickly. In a Fonzie-esque voice~ Aaaay-OK. We both ordered the lunch combo special, which is EITHER a Cali or Spicy Tuna Roll, or a Noodle bowl. We picked the rolls, that came with the usual- miso soup. Nothing special. For $8 it didn't seem much like a ~special~, but perhaps we got the "wrong thing". Just plain av.er .age.

What a treat this was! We got an email about a special opening they were doing to train their staff telling us to sample anything and everything and to ask as many questions as possible. The staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable for as new as the place was. Matt was our server and he was great! The patio section is intimate and cozy, and everything we tried we loved. From the tiger shrimp to the blackened chicken bowl. For dessert check out the Japanese Napoleon. Fried wonton, ice cream, whipped cream and strawberries.

As at their other locations, poor quality fish. Better to get your fish dish cooked here in a heavy sauce. Don't get sushi.

I haven't been to the VaHi location yet, but stopped in tonight while we waited to meet a realtor nearby. The staff was prompt to greet & seat and kept checking on me while I waited for my hubs to arrive. When the food arrived, I realized that what I'd ordered wouldn't work for my limited pregnancy diet. I guess I'd expected the tempura roll to be cooked a little more than it was. The manager & server were INCREDIBLY accommodating and worked with the chef to fully cook my roll. Now, I've never had hot sushi before, but it was OK. Definitely better than getting sick or something worse!! They didn't even charge me for the replacement, even though my husband ate a piece. I fully expected to pay for both orders, so I was pleasantly surprised. We will be back (and I'll be more conscious of what I order next time)!

Luckily there's valet parking for Genki, otherwise it's street parking, which is a pain in VA-Hi. I remembered the Buckhead one was good, but this place was ok. FOOD: Since I couldn't drink I ordered a lemonade which was water with a squirt of lemon. I asked for another drink, which was a little better. I started with the miso soup which was hot and good. We had the YOKOHAMA LOBSTER - Maine lobster tail, tempura fried and topped with a creamy tomato ginger sauce which was very good, probably the best thing we ate. Our server strongly suggested the SUSHI BOMB - Super Crunch Roll, Genki Tuna Roll, Rainbow Roll, tuna, salmon, yellowtail, shrimp, and imitiation crab nigiri, tuna, salmon, and yellowtail sashimi, and a crab and cucumber salad for $69.95. It sounds like a lot of food and pricey. Our server suggested a lot of pricey items - my friend's beer, our apps, dinner. I had the DYNAMITE - Chopped tuna, salmon, and yellowtail, with cucumber, tomato, and scallions, topped with a sweet and spicy chili sauce which was cold and the rice was very smooshed. Service was ok but like I said before, he pushed pricey items. Food was ok. I'd only come back since it's in the VA-Hi area where Everybody's Pizza was.

I love sushi. Even cheap sushi, but this place was thoroughly disappointing. We decided to try a quick lunch here because I have been saying, since we saw that a sushi place was going to open in this part of the Highlands, that I wanted to try it. We went in and got seated right away. They asked if we wanted any drinks and they brought over bowls of noodles with a teriyaki sauce and sesame seeds. This was the best part of the lunch. They have "cheap" lunch specials where you can get an entree and either a miso soup, a seaweed salad, or a ginger salad. I got a spicy tuna roll and a ginger salad. The ginger salad was disappointing; there were three pieces of cucumber, what I think was a round piece of ginger, and a whole lot of lettuce. The dressing was not very good and the lettuce was kind of dried out. I ate the cucumbers and a little lettuce and that was it. The spicy tuna was awful. There was too much "spice" and not enough tuna, which is weird because there didn't seem to be a lot of the spicy mayo (which I am okay with, because I love tuna rolls). The spice totally overpowered the taste of the rest of the roll. Also, I ordered a green tea. This probably should have tipped me off: they brought me a mug of hot water and a bag of green tea. I mean, come on...I've been to tons of Japanese restaurants and I almost always order green tea and I have NEVER been served bagged green tea. I suppose it was at least actually from Japan, which is good (it said it on the label), but still. Overall, it was VERY disappointing. I was really hoping this place would be halfway decent, but I was so disappointed with the food, I doubt if I will ever go back there again.

On a cool late-summer day, the open front window gave the place a nice cross breeze. Overall, the food was strictly aiight. The sushi was fine but not great. I could see why the California Roll was so cheap: There was barely any crab in it. Something about the dragon roll's flavor was a little off _ maybe a hint of fishiness. The appetizers I had weren't delicious either. The chicken egg roll tasted kind of like sawdust, while the gyoza were cardboardy and definitely seemed like they weren't freshly made. Overall, a solid place with a great atmosphere, but you can get much better sushi if you drive a little further.

Very excited for this new addition to our neighborhood. The BF and I decided to check it out after the gym one Sunday for a "healthy" lunch. My first thought was "Damn, this is expensive." After my initial sticker shock wore off, I noticed some more reasonably priced menu options. Food: The "pokerface" roll was hands down one of the best pieces of sushi rolls that has ever graced my palate. The wasabi cream was to die for. It was very expensive, but very worth it. The spicy tuna roll was a spicy tuna roll...pretty hard to get excited about it. Mr. Wonderful had a "make-your-own" noodle bowl with beef, egg, and cellophane noodles. Very good and much less expensive than my sushi. Decor: Very beautifully decorated, with lots of little touches that make it special. I love the open window seating that looks out onto Highland Ave. Would make for some excellent people watching over a cold beer. Bonus: Before you order, they bring out these little bowls of cold noodles with some sesame seed dressing. Very nice touch! Also, their menu is huge, so there is something for every taste/budget (as long as you are in the mood for Asian food, this isn't Chili's).

This place is awesome! We've been there at least four times within the last two months. We purchased the prix-fix Groupon the first time and absolutely loved it. The food is really good and comes in large quantities. The staff is always helpful and kind! There is complimentary valet in the rear, so we never have a problem with parking. Great date night option!

Aww, I had high hopes for this place, it's so beautiful inside, but Harry & Sons down the street is better. So, decor: awesome. Service: Pretty good. Food: meh. I wanted to try something new, so I took the low-risk route and tried it on a Groupon. Choosing the most popular sushi roll was a mistake. It was lots of rice, so little salmon. They really skimped on the fish. I walked away thinking that I probably won't try them again; I'll just stick to the good sushi that I know.

I have been giving this place more of a chance. They have new bartenders who seem to be on their game and the food is pretty good. I will continue to return and possibly raise it to four stars.

Glad to have a new sushi joint in the neighborhood since Harry and Sons isn't my favorite. They had me at the beer list, finally a sushi spot that realizes that not everybody likes Sapporo. After getting my yummy IPA we ordered the pork ribs and the sushi sashimi combo. Simple, clean sashimi with flavorful fish. Will be going back to try the signature rolls. Our waitress, Tricia was nice and after warming up fun to talk to.

My husband and I live walking distance from Virginia Highlands, and were so excited to see Genki opening we couldn't wait to try it. We've now been about four or five times, once with the Groupon deal a few have mentioned, and I am finally ready to say we won't be back. As sad as I am about it- we have just had too many mediocre to off-putting meals there to try again. A few "highlights": 1. Grease. Japanese food should never EVER be greasy. The portabella mushroom appetizer was so greasy we couldn't eat it- the "crispy" spinach was just a complete grease bomb. I also had stir fried vegetables that were completely inedible due to grease, and the "dessert" options? Seriously?? Eeeeeggguhhh. Fried twinkie!!?? Fried Oreos? Fried ice cream? Fried cheesecake?? Rethink this Genki!! Look down the street at Mali's mango with coconut sticky rice dessert for example. 2. On one visit I was pregnant and ordered a "mocktail." The server had no idea what i was talking about, so I explained that it is merely a mix of fruit juices and soda. (I've never been to a bar or nice restaurant that wasn't happy to make one.) In one of the strangest dining experiences of my life, the waitress refused to put the order in stating "I'm sorry, but the bartender would kill me if i asked her to make something like that." Huh?? She would kill you if you ordered a glass of juice and soda? Your bartender is so surly you're afraid of her? She asked if I wanted something else instead, and I said no- water would be fine. Then she said "you know, I will just make you something myself." I declined the offer, and three times just asked for water. When she came back with the other drinks for the table, she proudly placed an orange juice and sprite in front of me. I again declined it, and she insisted I try it. FYI- orange juice and sprite does not taste good. It sat on the table full for the entire meal, and when the check came, it was of course there, at some crazy price. I asked for the manager. We just wanted to leave at this point, and wanted the OJ&S off our bill. The manager insisted on making me a real mocktail (sorry for the oxymoron) as we were tired and trying to leave... He was really really nice, and the drink was delicious, but too little too late for us. 3. Another time we were seated out on the balcony near a family of four. The children were well behaved and didn't seem to be any problem. After we began eating the father became furious and had a shouting match with the server and then the manager... it seems that they ordered before we got there, and watched us be seated, order and get served our dinner before they ever saw their food. I can empathize with the family- when you have kids, you need to get your food and get it on time... not much wiggle room there. The manager apologized but did nothing more for them- there was no meal to comp because in almost an hour they never had a morsel. He actually came and apologized to us for the scene after it was over, but it left an impression. Genki, my advice to you would be to hire a new staff. Get a Japanese head chef, and retrain your bartenders and servers. Your location is fantastic- step it up!

Visited this location on a recent trip to Virginia Highlands. Service could have been better, but the sushi was fantastic! The drinks are pretty stiff here -- try their version of a blood mary and it will knock your socks off! I ordered salmon skin, spicy tuna, and the super crunch. Loved all three, and would definitely come back here again. Great place for a date.

Just opened. We sat at the front by the window. Really good people watching. Very good service the staff was supper friendly. I am rooting for this place because I need a good sushi restaurant close by. I had t he spicy tuna role and it was as good as any I have eaten...I''ll be back. The bad: menu with gunk all over it. Maybe the host could wipe down the menus before passing them out.

What a great addition to the 'hood. I had a dynamite roll and the cilantro seafood bowl. Both were very good. My rolls were loose and tended to fall apart. Also sliced relatively thin, but tasted good. Service was great. We were a bit apprehensive dragging in the 4 and 10 year olds, but they were made to feel welcome immediately. The smallish kids menu did the trick and my 4 year old loved the shrimp tempura. Overall, I'm excited to have this place walking distance from the house.

My first Yelp review. I bought a Groupon deal for $25 for a $55 prix fixe meal for two. My wife and I ate a marginal meal and were too full to eat the available deserts---either strawberry wonton shortcake with ice cream or fried Oreos. I kid you not. We opted for the shortcake instead of cardiac arrest at the table. We told the waiter that we were too full to immediately eat dessert and would like get the desserts to go. We tipped on the full meal cost without the Groupon After we signed the credit card slip, the manager arrived and nervously informed us that the desserts had to be eaten at the table and could not be taken home. I cannot for the life of me figure out the rationale here. Are they afraid of a deluge of take out aficionados looking for a bargain? Are they looking forward to guests upchucking fried Oreos on their tables instead of in the privacy of their own homes.. What they have accomplished is that I wiil not dine at Genkis again even if my only other choice is a Taco Bell Chernobyl Chimichanga.

Decided to give this location a second try today with a friend. My sushi came dripping with sauce over it, like covered... you literally could not even taste the sushi or avocado inside. My friend ordered the spicy tuna and it tasted and smelled as though it was past date. Without hardly touching our meals, the server did not charge us for one of the dishes. We both left feeling like someone in the kitchen should have addressed the bad tuna more seriously..fingers crossed for anyone else eating there today. Will not give them another try as this was a second attempt.

The staff was amazing here. It made my displeasure of the food worth the trip. We decided to hang out in the Highlands area. The choice was Yeah Burger or Genki. We decided to try a new restaurant. We did the store front sitting to people watch and the weather was beautiful. Our waiter had the best personality. This can make or break a restaurant for me. I am partial to bad food choices but I can not tolerate bad service. Needless to say, my fiance enjoyed the food with the exception of the fried spinach. I actually liked the dish but it was too oily. Our waiter removed the item from our tab because we could not eat it. This was done without asking. The Fried Calamaria was really good. For an entree we order the GENKATSU with mozzarella/jalapenos. I did not care for it but my fiance ate it all. I would give Genki another try. It was overall a pleasing experience.

This place has so much potential but they always mess up my order. I called today to let them know that my take-out order was wrong yet again. The guy just said "sorry" and the phone went silent. His tone was rude and then there was awkward silence........ I spend a lot of money at Genki and am a regular customer. For the amount of times that my order has been wrong, sorry just doesn't cut it. I will not be coming back.

I've read all the reviews on here and couldn't disagree more. Genki is excellent. The staff is friendly / attentive. The food is great. The location and open air window is fantastic. They have a rotating stock of draft beer, excellent bartenders, and great sushi. In my opinion, they did have some growing issues when they first opened but seem to have it down to an art now. My favorite part is the awesome bartenders (funny, helpful, quirky), the food, and the people watching.

Mediocre at best. Over priced and poor presentation. In a world of gastro pub goodness and pizzaria finesse sushi should be reeeaaallllly good. If it weren't for our awesome waitress I would give it a different review all together.

We wandered in on their opening night. Service was great--waitstaff is friendly and service was timely, decor is fine (contemporary and upbeat), but the food is average. We ordered a few rolls that were chintzy on the fish and not rolled properly. Fish on the nigiri was paper thin. The poki was the best thing we had all night. Head south and go to Harry and Sons instead. We won't be back.

To quote the definition of a 2-star Yelp rating, our food really was "meh" at best, and we received our four sushi rolls after a painfully slow 50 minutes. Our server was nice and apologetic, but the service was nothing special. The restaurant was barely half occupied, so I'm not sure what the hold-up was. The service, speed, and quality of rolls is MUCH better at the Roswell location. It's too bad, because much like other people reviewing this location, I was also hoping for a good sushi spot in the Highlands.

Love the open air front counter and the Genki lager. The service was great, but the sushi was subpar. The rolls, which are priced above average, were poorly rolled and very unevenly sliced. They need to hire a new sushi chef.

We went with a group that included three small children-there were 10 of us all told, so we made a reservation. We showed up about 10 minutes early, and the place was packed. They were about 5-7 minutes late in getting us to our table, due to parties ahead of us that were seated at tables that we needed for our group. No big deal-the kids were good, and we didn't mind waiting. They gave us 3 free appetizers because we had to wait, which I thought was very nice of them. They were very accommodating with the kids, and service was prompt and friendly. The food was hot, tasty, and came in large amounts-most of us took leftovers! A great place, very nice staff, and great food. Next time I'm in Atlanta, I'm coming here again.

Ok, three is a bit generous here for last nights service. Slowest bar service I've had in a long time. Seriously, what were they doing back there!? On the other hand, for a sushi place the beer selection is great. Really pleased with it and the patio off the back is great. Live music was nice and not overly loud so I could still carry on a conversation. Can't rate the food, but my lovely tablemate tells me it's good. I would go back and give the service another try simply because of the drink menu and atmosphere...oh, and to try the food :) But next time I hope the server is more attentive and the bar moves a little faster.

CELEBRATE LIFE'S FINER PLEASURES at GENKI NOODLE & SUSHI Have you ever dreamt of those foods that you enjoyed as a child? Reid Zeising did and his passion for these fond childhood memories were revived when he opened his first Genki Noodle & Sushi in Buckhead in 1996 for us in Atlanta to share in those foods that he so enjoyed while growing up in Japan. Flash-forward to 2011, to fill a void in the Virginia-Highland's causal dining scene, Reid converted the space that once housed Everybody's Pizza into his third rendition of Genki Noodles & Sushi. Now Virginia-Highland has its own neighborhood "sushi-ya" restaurant that's built on the premise of realizing contentment while enjoying life's finer pleasures. The energy source for this fun-filled eatery is Jason Drumheller and his knowledgeable staff. Japanese cuisine is usually very simple, as it is based on a belief that nature cannot be improved just enhanced. The perfect complement to these foods is saké with all of its various nuances and delicacies and Genki has assembled an outstanding selection to be explored - have fun searching for your favorite. The refreshing Gekkeikan Zipang saké with subtle melon notes and effervescence excites the palate but more importantly it's just fun to sip on. Then there is Rock Cloud saké, the first ultra-premium sake made in America. This smooth saké is made with high quality Californian rice with mountain spring water from Oregon, enjoy the honeydew flavors and the smile that follows. In addition to the saké, Genki has put together a wine, beer, and cocktail menu that can wow the senses; whatever your desire, it's here. The extensive menu has something for everyone, even those that are not ready to jump into the ritual of eating sushi or sashimi yet. Besides being artfully prepared, the food presentations are large enough to be shared at the table. The Tiger Shrimp appetizer is a good place to jump-start the evening. The shrimp are sautéed in a spicy garlic chili sauce and served over a mild flavored house made guacamole with fresh wonton chips for scooping; this mirrors the Japanese culture of contrast and balance. Then there is the Hamachi Kama, which is the collar portion of the Pacific yellowtail that's marinated in a garlic- soy sauce then grilled to absolute perfection. To most this might seem like a scrap portion of the fish, but instead this Japanese delicacy is the most tender and flavorful cut, relish each bite. For those not in the mood for seafood, the "fall off the bone" Japanese Marinated Ribs are the die for. These finger licking baby back ribs are barbequed with a sweet and savory sauce and served over a bed of flash fried crispy spinach- totally yum! There are many choices of high quality sushi and rolls to enjoy - strongly recommend stepping out a bit with the buttery textured escolar, the delectable idako, or the sweet tasting ama ebi (feeling adventurous? crunch down on the flash-fried shrimp head its really quite good). The creatively crafted rolls are masterpieces. The Genki Tuna roll is a blackened bluefin tuna loin that's seasoned and coated with panko then flash fried. This picture perfect dish is a celebration for the senses to enjoy. The other fusion-like roll that shouldn't be missed is the Virginia Highland roll. There is a crazy mixed-up explosion of flavors from the combination of spicy tuna with sweet mango that's topped with escolar, avocado, thin jalapeño slices, and masago (smelt roe) - this wildly fun uramaki roll is a blast to taste, and mimics the eclectic street action of the Highlands. Most traditional meals in Japan are made with noodles or rice, and Genki has plenty to choose from. Yakisoba is stir-fried ramen noodles in a sweet fermented fish sauce with thinly sliced grilled beef, shredded cabbage, nori, red ginger with a side of Japanese mayonnaise- absolutely delicious. The traditional bowl that should be Genki's signature dish is the Unatama Don. From the first taste the salivary glands go into over-drive, it's like an omelet on steroids. The grilled fresh water eel is married with sweet egg, onions, and ginger and served over white rice creating decadence in a bowl - just let the OMG experience come out. So what can top these amazing sensations? Remember as a child how a simple cookie would bring on a nice warm glow after eating your meal. At Genki that glow is amped up with tempura fried Oreos and Twinkies. These classic American treats are lightly battered and flash fried to give an extra crunch, but what makes these sweets scream is the side of the ultra-luxurious High Road vanilla ice cream. After the final bite realization sets in that satisfaction, happiness, and contentment is just a chopstick away. Itadakimasu!!!

Yum! Steamy Noodles Is Good Food! Cold Sushi may not be what you are craving right now but how about a steamy bowl of noodles with veggies and seared tuna? Yum Yum it's noodle season! I had Genki's Steamy Beef Broth, Udon Noodles, flash fried veggies, and Pan Seared Ahi Tuna for Dinner the other night and I was seriously in heaven. I was running around doing last minute stuff before New Years in the Highlands and stepped into the cozy, dark wood interior of their newest location. I sat at the bar and was given great advice on the menu and served in a flash. I had heard they had a rocky start in the Highlands. In part from service kinks and in part from the fact that folks are just sore that the long-adored Everybody's Pizza is no longer in the space, but they seem to have it all worked out. The place was bustling with late Holiday Season Spirit with a comfortable number of bar patrons, families eating dinner and couples snuggled up in booths. I will definitely be back!

I have to start with a disclaimer, I do not typically love Japanese food, especially sushi. The menu was pretty typical American style Japanese food. I ordered a "create your own bowl" where you get to pick your type of protein, how it is prepared, and what it is served over. I chose grilled chicken over glass noodles in broth. First thought when it arrived was that it was a huge portion. The grilled chicken was INCREDIBLY overcooked - almost to the point where I would have sent it back if I hadn't been in a hurry (and as I was a waitress for 8 years during high school/college I never do that). Second, there was this very sweet sauce drizzled all over it. There were a good a amount of vegetables, although I would have preferred more veg and less noodles, but they looked and tasted as if they had been sitting in oil in the kitchen before being put into the soup broth - very unappetizing. Had the dish been good, the price would have been reasonable ($12.95). The sushi that others at the table had looked pretty run of the mill. The service and atmosphere was fine and the manager did take the time to come over and check on us. I would not return to this restaurant.

The great Groupon deal led me there but wish I had passed on this one. It was not crowded when we arrived at 7:30 on a Thursday, so we were seated right away on the very pleasant patio. I server was polite and informative but the wait between courses felt like an eternity. The portabello appetizer served on a bed os spinach was tasty but way too oily. I had the Super Crunch roll, which was avocado, cream cheese and salmon tempura fried, so it was just ok. Since the Groupon included dessert, I had the strawberry and whipped cream dessert served on a wonton chips and my date had the tempura fried oreos. Both desserts were ENORMOUS, so if you order one, just split it. I would not order any of these dishes again, so the food was pretty unremarkable. And it took us almost 2 hours from the time we sat down until we paid and left. I can appreciate not being rushed during a 4 or 5 course meal, but the wait between courses was way too long.

I visited Genki on opening night. My wife didn't feel well and went to bed early so I met two friends out. I was concerned about being out too long since it was opening night, and I assumed service would be terrible while they got used to running the new restaurant. Wow, I was surprised. Service was great! Our waitress Emily was at our table often asking if we needed more drinks or anything else. She was incredibly friendly and added a great neighborhood feel to the restaurant. The three of us had a variety of sushi and rolls. Everything tasted great! The atmosphere here is quite a change compared to other sushi places in VaHi. The decor and music made for a much more lively atmosphere. Genki is great for a family like mine since my wife, from Florida, strangely doesn't eat fish. Genki allows me to get my sushi fix while she can enjoy a noodle bowl. I look forward to many more visits to our new neighborhood restaurant.

Boy was I disappointed! I was excited to see a Japanese restaurant menu that has more to offer than just Sushi or overly dramatic in-your-face display cooking. The restaurant has a great vibe to it and the service was quite friendly, but I knew something was amiss when I was served a bowl of ketchup to dip my Yakitori in. Really?!...ketchup! My Tempura was a bit greasier than you will find in Japan and the vegetables were not exactly artfully sliced but I can overlook these details. However, including deep fried cheddar cheese sticks with the Tempura is just not acceptable. Really?!...Cheddar Cheese sticks! The Japanese don't use much diary product and hardly ever, if at all, utilize cheese as an ingredient. Usually it is the service that is a problem for a newly opened restaurant, but this one doesn't seem to want to be authentic and needs a bit of practice with the execution. Really.....ketchup!

Welll, I finally got around to visiting this newest Genki-pa-dinky. Mainly because my former GM when I worked at the Buck-a-duck location is back running the ship I had been slow to go [why I keep rhyming, no lo so] because I loved Everybody's. But now that I have been, I do think this is a good addition to the core of the Highlands. Love the open bar at the front- especially on a gorgeous breezy day like yesterday! The sleek, brown paint on the tables and chairs look awesome. The menu is 99% the same - the 1% is because they are changing/adding a few things very soon. Of course, they are never taking the Reid roll off the menu- if you go to any location, you may be skeptical at first - but try this roll with steak and avocado and a little kick and...just get it. OH! And they still have the different daily specials, like 1/2 price wine bottle Wednesday and Ladies Night Thursday, etc. I got a make-your-own bowl, with grilled steak, veggies (note: the menu is confusing bc it says pick steamed or veggies with a meat choice, but you are only supposed to do that with a veg only bowl) and white rice. It was a little meh - I think the steak sautéed with onions would have been a better choice as the grilled was a little overcooked, and there was a looootttt of cabbage in the mix v other veggies. Not bad, but not great and I would try another custom creation next time. Like other locations, prices are good to a little high on some things; this is not really consistent across the board as far as what seem like decent v high prices. NPWH and now I have a more - *American-palate-ized* - option for noodles and sushi when I don't want a more *traditional* meal down the street a bit.
