One of the best meals we have had and the service was excellent. We could not have been treated better by server and staff. We had a party of 8 and it was Mother's Day. We were thrilled with everything. Chicken Portabello with Angel Hair is my favorite. We are locals and always bring out of town guests. Never disappointed. We love this place and am glad that we chose it for Mother's Day.

Zerillos used to be my go-to, family-run Italian restaurant when I lived in the Westchase community in NW Hillsborough county. Unfortunately a different group of people took over the restaurant for a while, and the place went downhill very quickly. I was told that the Zerillo family was back in charge, and so I stopped in for lunch to see if the place was back to it's original old world Italian cuisine recipes and service. Zerillos is located along Countryway Boulevard, just south of the intersection with Race Track Road. You'll find Zerillos in a small strip mall across the street from Five Guys Burgers. Back in the day I would go to Zerillos for a plate of pasta or for one of their nightly grouper specials. The pizza chef made terrific New York-style thin pizzas, and the atmosphere was very nice and subdued. You entered the dining area through the bar area, and some nights that could be a bit of a challenge as the crowds could be four and five deep watching a ball game on the TV's in the bar. Thankfully much of the Zerillos charm is still in place, including the quality of the food, and the excellent servers. I'm dinging them one star for the cost of their meals, as I found things a bit pricey. Lunch for me was soup and salad, and the food was extremely good but the cost was just over $10 which seems steep compared to other soup and salad options in the area. Bill ordered a pizza, and that was almost $20. Totaling that all up.....$30 is a lot for lunch.

Great family restaurant in Westchase with friendly service. Almost always busy, so take out orders can take up to 40 minutes on weekends. Order ahead. The margarita pizza and zerillo stix are both favorites of our family. The tomato sauce is particularly good and portion for price is very reasonable especially for this area. As people from up north i.e. the land of good pizza, this place is definitely worth a try!

I picked up a pizza, knots and antipasto salad the other day since it was $8 cheese pizzas on Mondays. The pizza was fine-nothing phenomenal and the salad was really good. The knots were ok but I've had better-they needed a little bit more butter. What I'm surprised about was the price! It was $25. How can an $8 pizza, knots and a salad equal $25? The salad must have been $11 and the knots about $5. If that's the case, its overpriced. Would I go back? Sure but JUST to get an $8 pizza. Nothing more.

The owner of this place has no sense of customer service. We brought a party of 10 in on a Saturday night at 8pm and made to wait for 30 minutes and pushed into a booth for 8. Asked to get another table and owner got nasty with us and told us to leave as he had reservation that were more important to seat from owner "I don't need your business". We have had this in numerous occasions with this place they don't want the business of large groups and then treat you like crap. The food is not worth the hassle or grief.

Updating my review because I recently ordered an Antipasto sub (Italian) from here. I was sitting at home, abandoned by my girlfriend with no groceries in the house and had a craving for an Italian sub. I was stunned at how good this thing was. It may have been the best Italian I've had since the closing of Carmenuchi's a few years back, and that's saying a lot because that was a once-in-a-lifetime Italian. Zerillos doesn't stack the meat high, but the quality and taste renders that unnecessary. The sandwich is served on a crusty Italian bread sub roll and tops this thing HEAVILY with a delicious olive mix, Italian dressing, lettuce and cheese. I love how the provolone stood out amongst the meats. It's really a damn good sandwich, and by the time my chica got home later that night, the only thing left were memories of an Italian sub! I give the sub a 4.5 on my Italian Sammich scale. Skip going there for dinner, stay home in your skivvies and order a sub! Tip: Ask them to add tomatoes to the sammich.

Everything is amazing. I highly recommend the penne carbonara... it won dinner. I highly suggest you stay away so you don't ruin your previous favorite place.

Will never go back. I don't know how anyone can like the food especially if you have had great Italian food elsewhere. No comparison to other top notch Bay Area restaurants

We've been to this lovely neighborhood spot a few times before. Last night, after having my sister's family in town and hitting the Florida Aquarium, we were heading back toward Westchase. With kids in tow, we thought Mellow Mushroom would be the way to go. However, I try to patronize local businesses whenever possible. I suggested Zerillos and I'm glad I did. We called ahead for a party of 7 and were seated promptly upon arrival. We got calamari and a pizza for the table for appetizers, then went with a few specials for our entrees. I got the seared scallops and shrimp over risotto, wife went with blackened ravioli, sister and her husband both got veal saltimbocca. It was one of those perfect meals in which the food came out quickly and tasted delicious, the service was friendly and thorough, and we all walked away elated that I had called an audible and chosen Zerillos over the chain (but still quality) Mellow Mushroom. I love the neighborhood feel of Zerillos and will continue to give them my business and recommendation.

I had to do another review. We came back here for the pizza and it beats New York. I'm from up north myself and I cannot believe how wonderful the food is here. If u are looking for a taste of "home" then u found It. Everything from scratch and everything is delish. It reminds me of being young and eating my moms home cooking. If you haven't come here yet, you need to. Great food and great service.

Full disclosure -- I've never actually dined in at this place, but have ordered take out many times. It's my go to when I'm craving Italian having a lazy night(too lazy to even boil pasta apparently). The garlic knots are the star of each meal, but the half moon mozzarella and calamari are great too. I typically order pizza or a calzone and have never had a bad meal from here, though there have been at least 3 or 4 times that some part of my order has been wrong(missing topping for example). But it's never tasted bad, so I can't complain. Food always arrives on time and hot. I can't speak to the service since I haven't dined in like I mentioned, but hopefully I'll change that in the near future.

Five stars for overall experience! My girlfriend and I have eaten in 4 times and ordered delivery 4 times. When we first entered Zerillos, we were one of only two couples there... Which could be off-putting, but it was early and then there wasn't an empty seat in the house by the end of the hour. The hostess, the waiter, and the manager were on point, kind, and simply helped set the mood by their kind greetings. We have had a waiter and waitress, sorry I'm bad with names, and they are always kind and seem to be experienced and organized. My girlfriend and I can have quite different tastes, so I can safely assume that we have tried almost everything on the menu and have not only been happy with every meal, but impressed. They have been kind and open to special requests. Zerillos has continually provided a wonderful night out and a delicious night in. Absolutely great.... Oh, and... It's required that you try the Muscles McKenzie.

Great food for a great value! Their pizzas are huge and always taste great and you can't beat the price. I love their garlic knots too. The staff is always friendly and my orders are always ready quickly. My favorite local pizza place.

Great family italian restaurant. We have eaten here many times in the past and love it. It's family run from the front of the house to the back. Tonight I am ordering the Penne Carbonara with chicken and my wife is ordering Shrimp Parmagiono. They come with a choice of salads or home made soups. Fresh hot italian bread will be served first. We both tried tonight's soup, Wedding Soup. It was wonderful! Hot and full of green, ditalini pasta and tiny meatballs. Our main dishes are huge portions. Mine could easily feed three. I really like the carbonara lots of chicken and bacon and the cream souse is rich. We will come for dinner again!

So, it's Friday night and we arrive to eat some delicious Italian food. We get seated and our waiter asks us for drinks. Everything is great, except how the waiter treated us for the rest of the night. What looked like a prejudice vibe was confirmed. The waiter would not look at us and would get frustrated with us. C'mon you can't treat your customers like this?!? I'm paying over $100 for food, which was terrible by the way. I ordered the fettuccine Alfredo with chicken. The fettuccine was undercook and the Alfredo sauce was really liquidly. On top of that our waiter was very rude to my mother, she had ask "may I speak with you?" several times! He just didn't want to talk with my family. By far my worst experience in dinning ever. Please save your self the embarrassment and don't dine in. Their pizza's are great but the rest isn't.

This neighborhood Italian grub and bar hosts a nice set up inside. I would say they're probably over priced for a small local nearby place, and personally I prefer the food at Fratelli's, BUT this place is close, convenient, and what really makes it is a dark, romantic interior, whereas compared to Fratelli's nearby you are eating on what may be a plastic checkerboard table cloth concealing a picnic table underneath. I've never had a bad experience, and it's a nice go-to spot if a craving for Italian staples happens to hit out of nowhere.

Dinner May 6 Just had the Pasta Carbonara with Chicken...OH MAN! WHAT A GREAT DISH! I havent had a bad meal there ever! So fresh and tasty. Dont let the strip center locale fool you, this is some high quality Italian Food!

Atmosphere was good and service at the bar was excellent; however the pizza was only so/so. We ordered a cheese pizza w/ extra cheese - the crust was still doughy and thick - not thin crust like the menu says!!! The cheese and the sauce had a decent flavor but the undercooked crust just made it a globby mess!! And the crust really had no flavor. We also tried a margarita pizza. Conversely, the crust on this pizza was well cooked and crispy where it needed be, but still had very little flavor. The tomatoes were ok but not ripe and it needed more basil. So... We're still in search of NY style pizza in the Tampa area!

Located in a little strip mall (right next to a cigar shop), it's good Italian comfort food when you don't feel like cooking. Nothing too adventurous on the menu, but they do the staples like chicken parm, penne ala vodka and baked ravioli well. Penne with meat sauce is also good and rich (just don't call it bolognese or there will be all kinds of confusion!). The Caesar salad dressing is too fishy for my taste. If you really like anchovies, you'll appreciate it.

Amazing Italian food. Service is great! We had the chicken parmigiana and the fettuccine Alfredo and let me tell you.. The dishes are HUGE! I would definitely recommend this place if your hungry. You won't be disappointed I guarantee it!!

After moving to Tampa from New York, I searched far and wide for a really good Italian Restaurant and was mostly disappointed. But then I found this little gem just 6 miles from my house. It's located in a small strip mall, but don't let the modest exterior fool you...this is the BEST Italian food in the Tampa Bay region. My family and I come here every month or two and have been doing so since 2009. Over that time, we have probably only been disappointed once. I've also introduced many friends to this place and the biggest complaint was that the portions are simply too big. And the beauty of this place is that you can go basic (Chicken Parm, Veal Parm, etc...) or you can go with one of the more exotic specials and the quality is always outstanding. The Red Sauce here is simply the best I've had South of Philadelphia. The Pizza is only adequate, but it's not a Pizza joint...it's a Restaurant. And if you're looking for a surprise, ask them for the Zerillos Squares...they are not on the menu anymore, but the regulars know about them and they are to die for. Best appetizer you will ever have.

One star because terrible customer service. We were waiting for 40 minutes with a party of 8 and they kept telling us 15 minutes. We had 3 hungry kids with us and they had a ton of tables available. They didn't seem to care at all or try to accommodate us. Such a shame. If you can't serve a party of 8 tell us before we keep waiting or offer to seat separately... We just left and went across the street.

I gave Zerillo's a 3 star average rating because their service is 2 stars and the food is 4 stars. My family and I don't go out much for italian food, we prefer to cook it our style at home, but when we do go out or get take out, we usually get it from here. I ate in once a few years ago but don't remember much about that particular experience. Ever since then, we basically just get take out pizza for an easy dinner night. Last night (Halloween), we called in around 5:00 to get an order for 2 pizzas and were told to come pick it up in 45 minutes. We arrived at that time and it still wasn't ready, so we left and waited for them to call when it was finally done. A whopping *2 hours* pass before our food is finally ready. Thank goodness we ordered early or we would have been some hungry bears. I know it was a busy night for them, but taking 2 hours to cook 2 pizzas is a bit extreme. I will say their pizza is fabulous though, one of my favorites around. Nice and thin crust and whatever is in the sauce smells and tastes fabulous. It's a bit heavy on the grease (probably why it's so dang tasty), so for those trying to cut back be sure to blot the pizza with napkins before digging in. I would still go back here again since their pizza is so good but it would be nice if they could get more accurate with their timing in the future.

I've gone here many times and it's a stellar local pizza joint. The atmosphere inside is nothing to special, just your basic "Italian" decor. However the crowd of people that surprisingly their adds hustle and bustle which I always consider to be a plus. The pizza, which is what I always good. The size of the slices are huge and the crust is usually perfect. Sometimes the pizza can be a little to greasy but it's unlikely to happen. As far as the other food items the pasta is solid and I've yet to try the other items, however based what others order the pizza is their star item. Don't get me wrong it's better than most pizza places in the area, just don't expect to be blown away with traditional Italian cuisine.

Good food, but don't get delivery. Takes way too long and the girl on the phone has no idea what's going on. For one, she sounds like you're inconveniencing her by calling to ask where your food is after 2 hours. Again, the food is good but they have to get their delivery and reception process up to par. It just stinks...sorry.

Very disappointed, going downhill. Seafood not fresh, probably frozen, rubbery, served in a pool of sauce. Pasta was loaded with salt and served on a plate the size of a turkey platter. Canolli was brittle and stale. Time to change chefs

When we first moved to Westchase this was our go-to Italian Restaurant as it was good food and close. There was a bit of an issue when some outsiders came and took over from the Zerillo Family like they couldn't get a liquor license etc and then it closed. The Zerillo's came back in and reopened so all was good. Good it the optimum word as the food is good not great. Now on the other hand. They Coaxed Romeo - the pizza maker back and since then the pizza's are worth the trip. A full bar and nice staff make it enjoyable enough. Hidden back in a strip mall next to a cigar bar (also good) and a vet and a cleaners kind of a hidden gem if you are looking for local sit-down Italian with a full bar. They also do breakfast and brunch on the Weekends and Lunch during the week so stop in and give it a try.

Based on a sole review, we weren't really sure what to expect from this restaurant. Upon entering I was pleasantly surprised by the ambiance and friendly staff, something I wasn't expecting from a restaurant relegated to the corner of a strip mall. Arriving right before the dinner rush, service was fast quite fast and even during it was still good. I ordered the filet mignon, which was slightly undercooked to my liking but still good. My dad ordered something with chicken, can't recall what it was but damn it was tasty! The margharita pizza was interesting, my main complaint is that there were too many tomatoes, which made the pizza soggy. The crust however was terrific. Zerillo is a solid italian restaurant that helps break the monotony of carabbas and maggianos, I would definitely visit again.

The food is good. It's not exactly a model restaurant for efficiency of operation. The staff can definitely have a "New Yawk" edge to them. It's fine but it's never my "Oh yeah - let's definitely go there!" place.

This place is like your neighborhood restaurant, it's not too big or small, nice and comfortable place to spend a couple hours or so to have dinner with friends and family. Started with an appt. Half Moon Mozzarella, their version of mozzarella sticks, except it's bigger and tasted a lot better than a lot of places. I rated as 1st or 2nd best mozzarella stick I have had so far. I ordered the pasta special, which had shrimps, portebello mushroom, creamy wine sauce with a little bit of garlic, very light basil, over some type of pasta. linguine, spaghetti? It was very very good, and it was huge portion. I'm eating the second half now for lunch. Also, the pasta came with the soup of the day, I think it was called Italian Wedding soup, it had chicken meatballs, spinach, and some kind of pasta, short and hollow, sorry as you can probably tell by now I don't really know pasta that well. Should really try out dessert if you still have room or you can always share a dessert. They have chocolate mousse cake, raspberry cheesecake, peanut butter chocolate cake and a few other ones. The waiter, Jim, brought out one of everything they had for us to choose from. Ended up with the peanut butter chocolate cake, it was very peanut buttery, the cake is closer to fudge/brownie, had peanuts, light sugar powder and some whip cream on the side. The service was very good and fast. Our appetizer came out like 5 minutes after we ordered it, we were still looking through the menu. Our entrees came out really quick too. The waiter seems pretty knowledgeable, knew the specials and the ingredients in them. Overall I say try this place out. It's a nice little neighborhood place with very good food.

Excellent! Very happy to have discovered this place. We usually go to Marina's when we want italian. Zerillo's blows Marina's off the map! The calzones are monstrous and delicious. I like parmigiana and theirs are fantastic. Perfect for take out for sure.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
