I have to qualify this review. Yoko is a friend of mine. In fact, she and my mom are from not just Japan, but Okinawa, and not just Okinawa, Miyako, and not just Miyako, but the same tiny village. My mom was friends of Yoko's cousin. How's that for evidence of a small world? Maybe that's one reason I like this restaurant so much. But the other reason is that the food is delicious. Their sushi is excellent. Fresh, prepared classically or American style with all the bells and whistles. (At what point does sushi stop being Japanese and start being, like me, Amerasian? I guess that's a different discussion.) If you're not into sushi, their menu has a pleasing assortment of traditional Japanese dishes. Try the Negimaki if you like beef. The tempura is crunchy and Yaki Udon has perfect texture. The decor is eh, and it can get loud. Though I think it's says a lot about Yoko that people feel comfortable bringing their kids here. For a casual Japanese dinner, you can't do better.

If you want Japanese food with a twist, this is the place to be. This was one of the first places in the area to serve up the traditional Okinawan dish GYOZA, and is main reason I visit this eatery. Of course, many chain restaurants are wise to the ways of the GYOZA now, and serve a watered down version as appetizers called "pot stickers," but they don't compare to the real deal. The tempura and sushi here are also really good.

Great sushi, great service, and a must for anyone who loves sushi.

One fish, two fish. Raw fish, cooked fish. Best sushi in Tampa that I've had thusfar It's Japanese run eat with confidence at the bar. The rolls are good if that's what you like slightly creative, not outstanding but the choice is "safe" if I might. The service is always on top their game Always working to keep a respectable name. The place has a quiet, calm feel It has plenty of seating with everyone eating Still makes an intimate meal.

Good sushi and sashimi, but I wish the selection of rolls were better. There are some of unique rolls on the menu, but Yoko's makes the mistake of serving crab with a "k". I avoid ordering sushi rolls with imitation crab meat and unfortunately most of the rolls on the menu contain imitation "krab". I don't mind paying a few dollars more for the real deal! The vegetarian rolls and fried chicken rolls are interesting, but not what I am looking for when I am in the mood for some raw fish. On a positive note: the waitresses are super attentive and friendly at Yoko's. The sushi is really fresh and tasty. On our last visit we ordered the spicy tuna roll, yam yam roll, and the Seminole roll. The Seminole roll was amazing! I think the yam yam roll was our least favorite, but shame on us for ordering a roll with yam in the first place. Yoko's isn't my favorite sushi spot in South Tampa for sushi rolls, but the fresh fish will keep me as a repeat customer.

Service was excellent, we were seated very quickly, comfortable setting, the "Bucks Roll" was our favorite, the dessert was off the hook! Will definitely return.

Yummy, yummy sushi! The specialty rolls are delish! The tuna tartare is a must have --- tons of fresh tuna.

  • Sean H.

What a let down. It might be easiest to say the only good part was the service. The waitresses were very attentive. Other than that it was a bust. Hard to find parking, sushi was warm, steak was not. Most of the rolls are filled with asparagus or tempura flakes, or topped with "Japanese mayo." No thanks.

After trying probably every other sushi establishment in the Tampa area (but not the greater bay area), Yoko's remains our favorite. While the variety and quality of sushi may not stand up against a restaurant we would rate with four stars in Los Angeles or New York, we are lucky and delighted to have this quality establishment in Tampa. Yoko's most significant shortcoming is the atmosphere, which is a blend of faded pastels and 70s-style wall lighting. The not-so-immaculate floors owes to the establishment's popularity among families with small children. We recommend later reservations if this bothers you as much as it does us. However, reservations aren't necessary earlier in the evening, when the childrens' screams can become soul-wrenching. Service is always polite and brisk, even when the restaurant is busier. There is also a significant (albeit expensive) take-out business, which we thoroughly appreciate but have never tried. The list of cold sakes is short, but robust enough to cover the basic tastes. We always have the Hakusuru, which is expensive but delicious. Sushi served at Yoko's represents the widest variety we've seen in the Tampa area, especially of traditional sushi and makizushi. While their trendy American-style rolls are not as original or inspired as other competing establishments, this is actually a bonus in our opinion: these are often accompanied by too much spicy sauce or other accouterments that generally hide the flavor of the fish. Yoko's is a must-visit by any sushi lover who isn't jaded by the quality found at the best restaurants in the country. I would not recommend it for a quiet night out, though: either screeching children or a busy restaurant make it the ideal place for parties of 3-4. Make reservations for anything larger (the restaurant is small). Expect the substandard ambiance. Try the gyoza and the harumaki, both of which are the best we've had in Tampa.

I at here for lunch just the other day, and I found it to be a good experience. This is not too far from the MacDill gate of MacDill AFB, so it's a good lunch candidate. I had the teriyaki chicken, and while the sauce was good, the chicken wasn't anything to write home about. Don't get me wrong, it was good; it just wasn't anything special. The bed of rice it was served on was nice and clumpy so I could eat it with my chopsticks. Other members of my party had sushi and they had similar experiences; good but not great. Don't be discouraged by my three stars, as I tend to rate more conservatively than most here on yelp. I would definitely eat here again. If I could give it half stars this would be a 3.5.

We have lived in many major cities across the country, and Yoko's is our go-to spot for really great sushi, and the service is great as well. A very nice place with consistently great food and consistently solid service!

Went back to Yoko, tucked away in a little shopping plaza on Macdill in S. Tampa. Full house on a Friday night, but luckily no wait. The interior is a bit dated but very comfortable and works for me. Tried the following: Ginger salad, Nigri Salmon, Yoko roll, Volcano roll, Caterpillar Roll and of course Sapporo Beer! Good cuts and fresh.

This place has great sushi. Right on par or better than SoHo sushi. I'm a fan of the crab ragoon, spider roll, and volcano roll.

Yoko's is one of my favorite restaurants. Their sushi and sashimi are top notch, and their rolls are absolutely delicious. Nothing better than watching your fresh food get made right in front of you at the sushi bar. Everyone is super friendly and it's always busy but never too packed. The rolls are delicious, although not as well put together as some places in the area. Altogether outstanding restaurant.

The best sushi in town, by far! And the staff is completely wonderful.

Great for lunch when you're looking to calm down in the middle of the day. Sushi is solid but not remarkable, erring on the side of bland. It gets four stars because of the atmosphere, which is nothing beyond tranquil even when it's full. The pace of the wait staff does feel slow, but I've never had a problem getting in and out quickly enough to get back to work on time. Nice mix of people including MacDill AFB folks, which is always nice to see.

Tampa has lots of other sushi restaurants that are better than this. The sushi was mediocre. I'm not a picky eater and I'm still not sure why I wasn't happy with the sushi but I've eaten enough sushi/sushimi combinations to know that it wasn't good. maybe the temperature, the texture? I was drinking water after each bite. And probably worse - the service was horrible!! I waited at least 10 minutes before I got my drink and another 10 min before I could get my order taken. trust me folks.. lots of other choices with better fish in that area...

This is my favorite sushi place in Tampa - everything is wonderful and you must try the Bucs roll! A good backup is the spicy crunchy tuna and the Mexican roll. :)

Tried this place for lunch based on Yelpers reccomends....Good Sushi, good service. The Salmon was especially tasty. All in all a good Sushi restaurant. They had some unique rolls that I didn't try, but would like to go back and test it out. Full Sushi menu on the website, which is nice.

Service was great, something I have come to expect from a good Japanese restaurant. Cuisine was pretty standard faire, but I must say I did not get any specialty rolls. The fish was fresh, and the food was aesthetically plated well. I would definitely go back again to try something a little more along the specialty line just to get beyond the average roll. The owner approached us twice and asked us if everything was ok. It seems that most people that go are regulars, and I can see why!

Yokohama has a very nice establishment and serves excellent sushi. My family who enjoys other parts of Japanese cuisine such as Miso Soup and the salad enjoyed it as well. I had a shrimp tempura with vegetables that tasted great. My only thing with this place is the server who was a little slow to pick up on my order, but besides that everything went great.

This is my favorite sushi place in Tampa. It's always great. Try the caterpillar roll and/or the volcano. Friendly, quiet, low key, spot on. The only other sushi place in Tampa that I adore is Blue Samurai. That's where I go if I want a more entertaining experience because it's in Ybor and it's cutting edge and hip. But Yoko's is my go-to regular stop.

This has been my sisters absolute favorite sushi spot for years, and I have to say she's finally converted me. This might just be the best sushi restaurant in Tampa... Try the lemon and Hawaiian rolls, you won't find anything like them anywhere else...

This place is a Tampa institution. The service can be slow, unless you get one of the veteran waitresses though. We always ask for one by name, and she is the best. We bring my two year old there, and we don't even have to tell her whatwe want for him, she just brings him his little special meal. The food is perfect. There is really no weakness there. Try the dragon roll!

Moving to tampa, my family and I looked for a sushi place and after looking and looking, we came across Yokos. Best sushi in Tampa by far. Not only amazing sushi, but great atmosphere. The owner is such a nice loving lady and makes sure everything is up to your standards. The waitresses are amazing! Soon and Natalie are our favorites along with Richie too! If you ask for any of those 3 you will not be let down! And last but not least the sushi bar, Danny , Number #1, and the boys are amazing!! They make the place, not only their excellent sushi skills but their personalities. You could always count on them for making you laugh, keeping a convo, and producing excellent sushi! Now that we moved further down south, we are looking for another sushi place, but we know it will be hard to keep up with the standards we have with Yokos!!!

For the sushi yoko's deserves 5 stars For price I would say 4 stars For the service I would give it a 1 if you don't have a reservation you will wait because there are not many tables and then once you do finally sit down you won't get your food for at least 45 minutes I love their sushi but I will never eat in the restaurant again. Call in your order and pick it up its so much easier Also good luck parking in their parking lot

This place is wonderful! I have a hard time understanding why its not more popular among the south tampa foodies... perhaps because its "hidden" about a hop away from Datz on the other side of Macdill? Anyways- excellent quality food and great service. They have a huge menu so I can't label this place as a "sushi" spot. BUT if you get sushi, its likely going to be the best you've had in a long time... & if you come back, they're likely to have added some new rolls to the menu to keep you interested! If you're in the mood for Japanese, Id highly recommend the Udon or the Yaki Soba with ginger salad. The portions are huge and the ginger dressing is PERFECT!! Pro Tip- They have INCREDIBLE lunch specials. I'd add this to your rotation of lunch restaurants if you're in So. Tampa! The Japanese lunch portions are usually big enough for 2!!

Yoko's!! Consistently great sushi. Dining in is always good but tonight I ordered take out. The person taking my order was very polite and right on target when she told me my order would be ready in 45 minutes. I arrived in about 40 minutes and they were bagging my order. Again very friendly service. For sushi it is my go to place!

A shorter than usual review because too much time has passed and I don't recall the specific sushi rolls we got. However, I had a couple issues with this sushi. First, it took almost 45 minutes to come out. I waited to check in until after we placed our order (to-go) because I've had a nasty habit recently of checking into places after pulling up in the car, only to discover a business was closed (I blame yelp for having inaccurate business times). So we ordered and sat down. When I wanted to figure out how long we were sitting there, I saw I had checked in 42 minutes prior. Food finally came out a couple minutes later after I threatened to leave. I know they were busy, but if your customer makes a to-go order and it's going to be longer than usual, maybe you should tell them so they can decide whether to wait. 45 minutes is unacceptable. Second, the sushi just wasn't that good. There are any number of better sushi places in the region (see my reviews if you're interested, or if you just need something to put you to sleep).. There was an excessive amount of rice, and yes, I know sushi comes with rice. However, this was too much. A thin layer of rice is all there should be. There is better Sushi in Tampa and better service.

Food was really good Service was really really slow and didn't bring the soup we ordered. Next time will try take out in hopes of getting all items ordered at the same time to enjoy.

Hands down my favorite sushi place in all of Tampa! I get take out at least once a week if not twice or more. They're always pretty quick on take out. If ordering on weekends, definitely call a bit ahead because they get very busy. Volcano Roll & the Tuna Dragon are my go to's. As well as the side ginger salad!

  • Angela D.

Blah. I ordered the salmon zest roll, sunset roll, and salmon nigiri to go. Salmon nigiri was the best of them all bc it had the most fish. However, one of the reasons I enjoy nigiri is the rice, and this rice here is not good. It's gummy and doesn't have much flavor at all. Totally not a fan. I think soho has the best rice. If their rice were good then I wouldn't have anything negative to say about the salmon zest roll which barely had any salmon at all, and even less lemon. Ugh. The sunset roll is good I guess but doesn't have much flavor on it's own. Take out presentation was terrible. I don't remember shaking around the box much, but everything was all over the place. Presentation is crucial in sushi. I guess that's what I get for getting take out. But my biggest complaint is the huge rice to fish ratio. See pic of one of the pieces of the sushi zest roll. Ruth's Chris still is my favorite sushi place. The best quality and such flavorful rolls.

This place is nice Japanese restaurant with good ambiance and staff. The owner acts like a concerned Asian mom making sure you eat all your food and are having a good time. The sushi is pretty good. I have had better, but definitely worth the price point. I will come again.

The freshest sushi in Tampa Bay. No one beats Yoko's in the variety department. They have plain rolls, rolls with sauces, tempura rolls and cucumber wrapped rolls. They will customize anything for you. They have an awesome regular menu as well. I highly recommend the Teriyaki Salmon off the regular menu. Some of my favorite rolls are Yoko's Special Roll, Bahama Breeze, Hurricane, Sunset, and Salmon Dragon. They have really great special rolls as well. I also love the Hama-Jale sushi app and the tuna tar-tar. Ask for the Emilio sauce on the side if you're a fan of hot spice! Customer service is great and the traditional atmosphere is refreshing. You'll enjoy it for sure!

Sushi - really good. Service - not really good. We came here on a Sunday night and we were hungry. Since we were so hungry we ordered a lot. Sushi, wine, appetizers..the works. I must say, I was really impressed with the food. The sushi we ordered was delicious as were the appetizers. We had the edamame and gyoza - very yummy. We got there at about 6:58 and they still gave us the 7 pm happy hour, which I thought was cool. The only thing that bothered me was the fact that 4 of the people we were with got entrees and they got their food so long before those of us that got sushi that they were done with their entrees before our sushi arrived. Over all, I will chalk it up to a weird night and would go back to give it another try.

They provided a good customer services. The staff were friendly and paid attention to every table. They came to the table all the time to make sure that everything is good. The food was good but the portions were a little small for the prices.

Fought through my sickness last weekend to take a trip to Yoko's. It had been a while since I visited that part of town so I was surprised to find that Yoko's looks completely different inside. I like the changes. It is a lot more open, you can see the sushi chefs at work so much better. As is our norm, J-Fur and I started with bowls Miso Soup. Yoko's miso soup doesn't stand out any more or less than other miso soups in the area. We also ordered edmame, though this time we went out on a limb and ordered the spicy garlic sesame version. I was disappointed to find that these seemed to be all spice and very little garlic. I would've like to see the garlic side of things dialed up just a bit more. After the soup and edmame we ordered some sushi. We went with the Yam Yam Roll (tempura sweet potato and avocado) and the vegetable roll (cucumber, asparagus, avocado and spinach). Yoko's Yam Yam is the best sweet potato roll I've had. I'm not sure how many people ate potato chip sandwiches when they were young but that is exactly what the yam yam reminds me of. It has a nice, soft, starchy outside and a crunch in the middle. I was pleased to see that Yoko's version of a vegetable roll includes asparagus, avocado and spinach. That is a combination I haven't seen before. It was a pretty good roll too. Not as great as the Yam Yam but still pretty good. The highlight of J-Fur's meal, and the reason we always seem to wind up there on her birthday, was the dessert. Who would've known that one of the best ice cream treats Tampa dishes out actually comes from a Japanese restaurant? The dessert starts with ice cream. It then includes Tempura Oreos throughout. The Oreos are nice and warm and crispy on the outside and meltingly good inside. Pair the warmth of the Oreos with the coolness of the ice cream and you've got a dessert that is very near perfect. The lowdown: Skip the appetizers, go right for the sushi, save room for the tempura oreo dessert.

Try the edamame! It has a chili kick to it which makes it absolutely delicious. My mom and I came here at 5 p.m. on a Sunday and there were already a couple people inside! That's when you know a place is good. It is a huge lay out so I can't imagine getting a seat is a problem (but the parking lot was pretty full once we left, so that might be an issue during more popular times). We tried the Dragon Roll and two of the rolls that were on their happy hour menu (which I cannot remember). I do know that all the rolls had fresh fish and were good. No complaints here. I'm usually a happy camper when I get sushi, so unless the roll really sticks out to me I can eat almost anything off the specialty sushi menu and enjoy it about the same amount.

Great sushi - fresh, creative combinations and a much improved wine list of late. The atmosphere is also much improved since the remodel. It's a nice night out kind of place now. The sushi has always been great but the wine and atmosphere are now equally fabulous.

My favorite sushi spot in Tampa so far! I always test out a new spot by tasting the ikura (salmon roe). It's always super fresh when I've come to Yoko's. They're always busy (a great sign) and have a great happy daily hour too.

Yoko's is the best sushi we've found in Tampa. The fish is always high quality and fresh. Their rice is nice, too. I have had better sushi rice, but not in Tampa. The variations of the rolls are good, although they can go overboard with the sauces sometimes. The chefs have always been accommodating when we request changes like a different type of fish, ask them to go easy in the sauce, or say "no roe on anything". Occasionally they have messed that last part up when we get take out, but never when we sit at the bar. My favorite thing here, which Yoko's introduced me to, is the Kama. This is the part of a yellowtail, just behind the gills, cut like a steak and broiled, served with ponzu sauce. Speaking of ponzu - to the reviewer who said they've never seen a ponzu sauce with mayo in it, neither have I. Sounds like you got tataki sauce, which I like, but it's not ponzu. Anyway, the owner, Yoko, is a sweetheart, and all of the chefs we've ever known here have been fun to hang out with while we eat. We recommend Yoko's above all other sushi bars in Tampa to anyone who asks.

Best sushi in town! The Buccaneer roll is my favorite with creamcheese then it's tempura and topped with spicy mayo and eel sauce! Fresh and delicious! They also have great lunch time bento boxes or you can just eat at the sushi bar.

I am not going to claim to be a sushi connoisseur, in fact, I don't have the opportunity to eat sushi all that often. That being said, Yoko's is absolutely delicious. The staff is friendly, the food is great, and the atmosphere is good. The restaurant is tucked away in the corner of its plaza, and is a perfect place to grab a sushi lunch in South Tampa.

A hidden gem! Some of the best sushi I have had in a long time! Definitely the best in Tampa! They have happy hour specials 7 days a week from 5-7! Their rolls are generous and the service is great! Will definitely be coming back here more often!

My all-time favorite sushi spot in Tampa Bay. Fresh, succelent sushi. A simple, spicy tuna roll has never had so much flavor. If you have a chance, I would also recommend sitting at the sushi bar. The sushi chefs are personable and accommodating. They have wonderful stories and recommendations on what to eat based on your likings. Exactly why I tried the Caliente roll and am now addicted.

Why 4 stars? Because this is some of the better sushi in Tampa Bay. --- --- --- I did not get to full take in this experience, because I was making a quick solo trip before heading to a concert. I order a couple of rolls - the Lobster and the something else. The lobster was absolutely spectacular, while the other one was definitely not my favorite. I know it's SUPER useful when I can't even remember the name of it, but I let the sushi chef recommend a roll for me to try, so I instantly forgot what he said it was called, haha. I don't blame Yoko's though, I was feeling more adventurous than usual and was in a high-risk, high-reward kind of mood. However, the Lobster Roll was so amazing, I'm very confident that Yoko's will be one of my favorites after more visits.

I have never, in my lifetime, had a ponzu sauce that contains mayonnaise. Well, until I came to Yoko's and endured it. Do you know how rare it is to hear the Japanese language being spoken by staff at a Japanese restaurant in Florida?* Sight and sound were telling me that the food should taste good, yet taste-touch-smell were telling me that something was very wrong. The confusion almost caused me to panic and try to run for the door. But, I'm tough and decided to hold on and "power through" my expensive and disgusting meal at Yoko's that left me too nauseous to realize that I was still hungry. * Japanese people just don't want to live in Florida for some reason.

Yoko's is a popular south Tampa Japanese restaurant and sushi bar located in a little shopping center on MacDill Avenue just south of Bay-to-Bay. According to the menu, this family-owned restaurant has been here since 1995. We were there specifically for sushi, and so the hostess / waitress walked us to some available seats at the sushi bar and immediately took our drink order. While reading through the menu, she returned with hot towels for our hands, a pot of hot green tea, and two waters with lemon. We ordered a couple of their specialty rolls to share, and I also ordered some sashimi. For the rolls we ordered the Tuna Dragon roll which was spicy crunchy tuna topped with fresh tuna and finished with spicy mayo, tempura chips, scallion and roe. They were promoting a new roll call Gangnam-style which turned out to be fried grouper with onion and more spicy tuna. This roll was plated with an artistic-blend of four of their signature sauces, and quite yummy. Finally, upon the recommendation of our sushi chef, we finished off with a Saigon Fresh roll which was shrimp, cilantro, jalapeno, cucumber, Daikon radish, carrots, and mixed greens rolled up in a rice-paper wrapper and served with a spicy ponzu sauce -- very light and very delicious! I had a couple of pieces of white tuna and yellowtail sashimi, and we were both quite stuffed after that feast! The restaurant has two sides with a common central sushi bar, and the chefs are able to pass ingredients back and forth through a large cut-out in the wall. One fellow was busy mixing up some sauces, while another was breaking down a fresh mackerel, and the remainder were slicing and dicing to fill the various orders. The atmosphere in Yoko's is very no-nonsense, so sit at the sushi bar if you want some action. The chefs are very good, and they'll chat with you if you ask questions. The sushi & sashimi were delicious, and I saw others ordering traditional Japanese entrees off the menu. I'm not often in south Tampa, but I would gladly become a regular at Yoko's if this was in my neighborhood.

I am a sushi fan! This place is a cute place off of MacDill. I never knew it was there and boy am I glad I finally had the opportunity to go here. I loved the atmosphere of the place. It's not very big and the lighting in there is nice. It's a place that would make a perfect place to be honest. My girlfriends and I shared some wine and some sushi rolls. It was a perfect evening and I will be heading back there soon!

My absolute favorite sushi spot! Great service, we usually sit at the sushi bar. We are regulars, so we are often brought our regular drinks, a cucumber salad (which I always request sesame seeds added by the bar) and miso soup. We order a few of our favorites every time - tuna, yellow tail and conch sushi and a Tampa roll. Everything else, we choose/decide whatever we fancy.... Service is always good, we are often greeted by Yoko herself and the food is always fresh and fantabulous!

I went here afterwork with a few co-workers. the food was good and again, friendly fast service. It wasn't bad, like I said, good, but with so many sushi restaurants in tampa, this one didn't stand out for me. There was no wow factor.

As far as I can tell it's the best Japanese restaurant in south tampa. I had vegetable tempura, the appetizer size was same portion as the entree except without rice and soup. I'll be coming back again, I'll change my review once I have a sit down experience here. No complaints at all.

Great service! Fast, friendly, and helpful. I chose to sit at the bar and the Chefs really helped me with my order considering my food allergies. Next time I plan to put my trust in them and put something together for me.

It pains me to write this review. The owner seems really nice. I wanted to come back and try a second time just to make sure my first experience here with bad service was not common. Regrettably the main fare here seems to mostly be americanized rolls buried by icky sauce rather than anything actually resembling the food Japanese people eat. I just couldn't get motivated enough to drive all the way over from Clearwater again for a second attempt. Arrived on a Sunday evening about 7:00 or so. The place seemed to have been packed with early customers that were just finishing up and starting to clear out. I was greeted and seated quickly at the sushi bar. A server quickly presented himself and equally quickly provided me with a Sapporo beer to drink. Then nothing but me & my inner thoughts while crickets chirped in the background of my sudden invisible existence. Nobody seemed to be interested in actually serving me food. I sat there at the sushi bar for 20 minutes sipping on a beer, but after watching someone come in after me, sit next to me, then getting chatted up and served by one of the sushi bar chefs decided enough was enough. At least half or more of the tables were now empty, so taking the remainder of my beer up to the greeting hostess I ask to be seated at a table instead. Again, I was quickly seated at a table. Again, a server quickly showed up and now moving on to cold nihonshu ordered a bottle. Again it was served up quickly so I took advantage this time and ordered edamame along with a pair of tekkamaki and oshinkomaki rolls thinking to get something simple on the table quickly for my now rumbling belly. Good cold sake is hard to find sometimes and not for the budget minded , but the best bottle in the house was very good and so my earlier frustration faded with each endearing sip of delightfulness. However, twenty minutes later I finally see my server again and sort of bark "edamame?" with a shrugging wt- gesture and the response I get back is a sleepy "oh, did nobody ever serve you that?" like she just rolled out of bed. Yep, I'm instantly transported at warp speed back into full facepalm mode again. A few minutes later a bowl of soggy, semi-warm edamame finally shows up on the table, yippy-kuy-yea. Fifteen minutes later the edamame bowl is empty, and you guessed it, no rolls yet!?! All this time other people are coming in groups of 2 - 4 ordering up big plates of the previously mentioned ameri-jin rolls buried in icky spluge sauces sucking up all that disgusting obesity delight. Yet for some reason I can't get the simplest items on the menu served to me in a reasonable amount of time. It was 45 minutes from when I walked in the door to finally being served a bowl of wilted edamame. The rolls show up another ten minutes later; nothing special, all cut at different lengths, sloppy amateur work. I was still hungry and would have ordered a second bottle of the most expensive cold sake and an entree dinner, but by this point it was time to say goodbye to the singing fat lady and go eat somewhere else. Before I could get the server's attention to bring my check the owner comes up and starts talking to me. I can tell she's a real sweetheart too. It almost broke my heart to see the look on her face upon sharing my underwhelming service experience. She really deserves better than what the employees were giving out in mediocre effort this night. Despite my insistence for her not to, Yoko-san comp'd me for the edamame. I left the money for it just the same. My sleepy-headed Korean server probably got to keep the difference for herself, but my only intent was to make sure the owner knew what happened rather than complain to get a freebie. Mostly because I can see the potential for Yoko's to be a very good restaurant & sushi bar, but it definitely needs a stronger manager and employee base to achieve such a status. The best sushi I have ever had is from yoko's! I've had sushi from Hawaii and New York- meh. They have the freshest fish and most delicious roll combinations. Also, the sam's sauce (spicy sauce) is out of this world. The staff makes you feel like home and we are proud to be regulars!

The sushi was just so-so and the wait for our food was soooo long. My friends and I went in like a group of 6 and not only did the food take forever, they gave away our sushi to the table next to us which was a table full of 14 year olds. The girls put their hands all over our sushi before they realized it wasnt thier order. The waiter came by and took the plate back and tried to give it to us after they had put their hands all over it. What waiter in their right mind takes food from the wrong table after he watched them touch it and trys to give it to the right table???? That's absolute garbage. If I'm paying like $10 to $15 a roll, I sure as hell am not getting already manhandled sushi. That's crap. I would never go back.

The Brief: Horrible Service, by both the Waitress and Hostess. Manager was affable. Sushi and rolls were okay at best. Price was inexpensive, but ratio of rice to fish was definitely in favor of the rice. The Detail: We went early because we have young children and it was mother day. 4 adults and 2 children in our party. 5PM is when they open for dinner and that is what time we thought we entered. We were greeted at door with we don't actually open till 5pm. Apparently was 4:56pm and the door was unlocked. This is how I responded. If you are not open then don't unlock the door and if you need us to wait we would have. Bad tact. We placed an order for about 4 roles, 2 order of sushi and a couple of pieces some sashimi. This was at 5:10pm. We were the first ones in the restaurant and close to the last of the tables to be served. Meanwhile countless take out orders and 4 other tables were served and one left before we were received our entrees. When I asked if it was going to be much longer 45 minutes after we ordered. I was told "It won't be much longer sweetie." I realize this may sound petty but I don't appreciate being called sweetie by someone who doesn't know me and when I am clearly not happy. Again bad tact. Finally at 6:05pm the food came delivered by the manager. He was nice enough but offered no explanation for the delay. Meanwhile the kids are loosing their minds and I'm ready to eat my napkin I so hungry. It's Sushi it doesn't need to be cooked for god sake and that's the major proponency for the cuisine. That it's fast and fresh. The fish was fresh and the preperation was decent in appearance. That said, the food contained the smallest amount of fish I've seen in Sushi outside of Soho Sushi off Kennedy. Needless to say I won't be going back.

I have trouble understanding why so many find this place so good. I went here and found the rolls to all be very Americanized with very little fish in them. I also order the salmon sashimi and if came out old looking and falling apart (maybe it was frozen multiple times?). I was not impressed.

Had a great meal here with my wife last night. Try the Gator roll!! Also the soba noodles with chicken. Service was awesome.

  • Hermun P.

The waitress was insincere just like the food. The rice was not sticky enough and the rolls started to fall apart. I agree with the other review where it is Americanized rolls swimming in sauces. I ordered the Gasparilla roll which was too spicy and covered in other sauces as well, and the eel roll covered with eel sauce making it too sweet to taste anything and the spicy crunchy tuna roll which was bland (!?).

One of the best places in Tampa to get some great sushi! They are quality, sushi is always fresh and very relaxed atmosphere, great for a quick bite or a full meal. If you haven't tried it, put it on your Places to Eat Bucket List for Tampa!

We ordered (6 rolls) to go from Yoko's this evening and two of them were wrong. One, the super Mexican, was supposed to have spicy mayo in it and there was simply none. Then another roll, which was supposed to be the a Bahama Breeze, was just flat out wrong: whatever they have us was only tuna (supposed to include scallion, asparagus, topped with tuna and avocado sauce). So I called and politely told the hostess that two of our rolls were wrong. First she started arguing with me and describing them. I finally was able to convince her that they were not correct and she said okay we will fix it. She calls me a moment later and tells me they would replace the rolls, but we had to pay for them again. What?! I don't want more, I just want what I ordered! She went on to tell me that the hostess double checks them so they had to be correct. Um--now she just called me a liar. I said as much as well, so her reply was "well bring me back the wrong one so you can make your case" what?! Never have I had someone tell me to bring back the wrong food! I couldn't believe the way the treated is, almost like a sushi criminal! Hello I just paid $70 for sushi, you really think I'm just looking for a freebie?! Additionally the jalapeño seeds were left in the Saigon Fresh and the spicy crunchy tuna was pretty bland. If you still end up going for sushi, get the hurricane- I will say that roll was delicious

The challenge for many sushi restaurants now is that you can purchase average sushi rolls, sashimi, and wraps in most grocery stores at a reasonable price point. Yoko's is unable to overcome this competition - it has a modest menu, the value proposition is low given the poor quality, and the atmosphere is typical "strip mall sushi bar". If you are like me, you enjoy sushi when it is a full experience of high quality/unique flavors, sashimi that melts in your mouth, and presentation with flare. Sadly, unless you are just looking for an excuse to get out of the house, I must recommend that you "pass" on Yoko's.

I probably need to stop searching for sushi in Tampa. My latest attempt took me to Yoko's, a perfectly pleasant strip mall restaurant with disappointing food. The staff is very polite, and the atmosphere is calm and comfortable. The menu is fine. I do wish that the customers weren't left to mark their sushi selections. That makes the place feel a little downmarket. But my biggest issuer was the lack of freshness of the fish. I always order the salmon and salmon roe when testing out new sushi restaurants because I know how to evaluate their quality. Imagine my disappointment when the salmon was thinly cut with whitened edges and a hard texture. The ikura was okay but unremarkable. I also tried the Mexican roll (fried shrimp and avocado), and it tasted odd. The wasabi wasn't very strong, and the ginger lacked a certain zing. Those are easy fixes that can improve the sushi experience. The worst part of that evening was my stomachache that evening. I will not be returning to Yoko's.

I'm gonna summarize this review with a bunch of short words: 1. warm towels 2. good ginger salad and miso soup 3. fresh sashimi 4. delicious specialty rolls 5. attentive service 6. lots of customers! I honestly dont know what was in our two specialty rolls because we asked the chef to surprise us. There was a little bit of everything but it all coalesced deliciously inside my mouth! Will definitely come back for more!

Our absolute favorite sushi restaurant in Tampa! We have been coming here for over 10 years. Its family owned and has been here for about 30 years. Quality of the food is great! They are always coming up with new and unique rolls. The Sushi Chefs are amazingly talented and really friendly. It's so much fun if you sit at the bar. I go to this place alone after yoga or with friends for dinner. I've also used their takeout which is also great. We tell everyone about Yokos! A must stop in South Tampa!

I came here 3 weeks ago and when I asked the front desk of the hotel I was staying at for their recommendation of the best Japanese restaurant around Tampa. They told me two restaurants- Soho and Yoko's. I decided to try Yoko's. The menu was pretty diverse, the service was prompt, and the sushi chefs craft their sushi very well. Had a wonderful conversation with the owners daughter-and I admire that she found the time to actually greet me personally and asked if my food was ok. Overall, a very friendly and welcoming staff and a great welcome for my first time in Florida. Cheers to you Yoko's!

Best sushi in Tampa in my opinion. They have two sushi bars, making them better able to handle a crowd than SoHo Sushi (owned by Yoko's son) for sure. They have a great variety of spcialty rolls and are willing to tweak them upon request. For example, I prefer the special rainbow with Arizona (yellowtail and scallion) inside instead of California. Try it :) More suggestions: the Tuna dragon is superior to the Salmon option if you ask me. And the Super Mexican is a nice treat for those who enjoy shrimp tempura. The waitresses are friendly and you usually don't have to request drink refills as they bring them out before you even reach the bottom of your glass. Yoko's is pretty much a weekly thing now that I live in Tampa. Just so you know, they're take-out sushi is made just as well and is just as presentable.

Yoko is one of the better sushi/Japanese restaurants in Tampa, but that's not saying much, because the sushi/Japanese in Tampa is not that great. This restaurant in a larger city with better Japanese/sushi would get 2 stars max. Actually, I think Soho Sushi is better than Yoko. But Yoko has a more extensive menu and has great desserts, etc. One thing about Yoko is, it SMELLS BAD in that restaurant. If you are one of those people who is smell-sensitive, you will know what I am talking about when you go here. I think the place needs a paint job, new carpeting, etc.

The best thing about Yoko's is that it's always good. It's solid sushi that will occasionally knock your socks off. He gets in fresh local fish and makes pretty spectacular specials with them. I rarely order off the menu. They've got more traditional rolls and then American rolls with all the fixings. I don't know any of the rolls names off hand, which is useful, I know. But I don't really think you can go wrong. If you're looking for a cool place to go, this is probably not it. It's not hip and trendy. The decor leaves you wanting but the food doesn't and that's what important.

No more. Once one of my favorite sushi spots, this place has devolved into a zoo. A zoo of kids, overly busy wait staff, and excessively long wait times for food. The sushi is pretty good ... when and if you can get it. But do you want the loud kids at the next table bumping into you, with the frazzled parents who couldn't get a sitter? And it took forever the last time I attempted to go there to get a table, get served, get the bill, etc. Each step was excruciating. Plus, the noise level of the patrons has risen from quiet to extreme. As much as I love good sushi, Yoko's is now off my list. It's become a circus, and I don't want to eat my sushi in a carnival atmosphere.

  • Nevik E.

Note: On Yelp I review exclusively sushi bars. For rolls this place would get a solid four stars. For classic sushi, its up in the air a little. The chef was very receptive to us ordering omakase (points for that), and created a variety of sashimi and roll options for us. For us, they were to Americanized with dabs of hot sauce on even the sashimi. However, the cut of hamachi we had was excellent and it is my opinion that if we lived in the area we could easily build a relationship so that the chef would present more classic Japanese courses for us. I give it a recommendation, but if you're a sashimi/nigiri fan not quite as strong a recommendation as if you are a fan of rolls.

I was certain that this place would be packed wall to wall after reading the reviews! I showed up right at opening time and it wasn't very busy (lucky me!). The wait staff is very attentive, the chefs are incredible, the food is fantastic! I'm so happy right now!

My husband and I recently moved to Tampa. As I was pregnant at the time, I want eating sushi. Well, after having the baby I was excited to have some sushi so we followed the yelp reviews and tried the restaurant. While the service was friendly, the sushi was disappointing. The quality was average, but the most disappointing aspect was one roll I ordered was rolled with cucumber instead of seaweed, which I don't care for, and the other roll was so spicy I couldn't eat it. I got the menu to order something else and reread my original order thinking I misordered but the descriptions were in fact way off. I'll be trying someplace else.

AMAZING Sushi & Service. My husband and I are weekly customers - we sit at the back bar with Sam, the Sushi Chef. The service is amazing, the food is consistently excellent - with some of the freshest fish I have ever had. Definitely try Yoko's if you haven't already!

Yoko's is hands-down my favorite sushi restaurant in Tampa. The fish is always fresh, and the rolls are to die for. My favorite rolls are the Hawaiian, Bucs, Volcano and Sister rolls, which never disappoint. While the service can be a little bit slow, the servers are friendly and accommodating. The interior was recently remodeled and it looks much more fresh and modern. I love it when Yoko herself walks around asking how people are doing and if they like their meals. It just feels like such an intimate experience. This restaurant is tucked back in the corner of a little strip mall, and parking can be limited on Friday and Saturday nights. Don't let that deter you, though. This place is worth the wait and trouble of finding parking.

BOOM! Love this place. I want to go back right now! Sushi is fresh and very yummy. Service is outstanding. It stays short of 5 stars because the dinning area feels cramped. Too many tables crammed into a small space. So yeah, if there's kids there, it's going to get loud. But even without kids, you'll be able to ease drop on the convo next door (be careful! They're listening to you too I bet!). It's not the best Sushi I've ever had but it'd darn good. I'll be going back fo sho!

To tell you the truth, this place is nothing really spectacular to me. I don't have much to say about this place. However, this is one of my friend's favorite sushi place in Tampa, which is why I've been there a couple of times now. But it only gets a "Eh, it's cool..." from me. Maybe it's because I'm more of a sashimi/nigiri person and usually get rolls just to fill my stomach. If you're a rolls type of person, you'd probably enjoy this place alot more. I will give them credit that they tried to change it up by offering a spicy edaname on their menu, which they make themselves. It's pretty good too. Another thing they have is the fried shrimp head when you order the sweet shrimp nigiri. I haven't had this since Asia, however, it's not as crunchy as I usually have it....I don't think the oil was hot enough. But hey, at least they have it here. The staff is always friendly and tries their best to accommodate whatever they can. Therefore I give them 4 stars! P.S. If you do come, you should try their flavored sake (peach and apple) especially during happy hours (if you come in before 7PM) where I think it's 2 glasses for $5. Warning, it is a bit sweet.... I like the peach better because it's not as sweet and it tastes like it has a bit more sake than apple, which just tastes like fruit juice to me...

My family and I have been coming here for almost 18 years...this is the BEST SUSHI place in TAMPA!!!!

  • Mike N.

You've got to be kidding. This place isn't Japanese and doesn't serve anything similar to Japanese food. Maybe it's ok for a cheap crunchy tuna roll drenched in mayo to disguise the taste of the fish, but otherwise it's the lowest grade of sushi available, I wouldn't feed it to the racoons in my backyard. Because we were suspicious after entering and noticing the furniture was typical chinese restaurant style, complete with plastic covered table tops and chinese restaurant style chairs, we went light on the sushi. But even The "Japanese" noodle dishes were terrible. The Niku Udon for $15 was served with heaping amounts of bean sprouts, shredded carrots and cabbage...seriously. Pho anyone? I thought we ordered udon...the meat was also tasteless and chewy, the noodles from an instant package. My "Yasai Seafood" for $15 was a heaping mound of more bean sprouts shredded carrots, onions, hard as rubber shrimp that tasted like it had been frozen for decades and tiny scallop balls that had no taste other than the teriyaki sauce, which everything was dripping wet with, they must have used a gallon. Finally the sushi...hamachi sashimi was warm, warmer than room temperature (which was freezing, go figure), and it was inedible. It tasted like it had been soaked in sweetened vinegar for days. Amae ebi (sweet shrimp for those still keeping score) was brown on the edges. Yes, thats no joke or exaggeration. We didn't bother to try any of the other few pieces in front of us. On a positive note, our server was great, very sweet and hard working. But that can't overcome the food. This place should take the Japanese out of it's name. Just Yoko's or Yoko's Asian Restaurant would be a lot less misleading. $65 for two people for this is unacceptable. One star and I'm not coming back.

According to Sally this place is a must see and after have gone with her I must say: I agree. The Mr. and I went with Sally and her guy to get sushi the other evening. I can't even begin to tell you how phenomenal the whole experience was. We sat at the sushi bar and were waited on hand and foot (keep in mind Sally and her husband were already friends with our sushi chef). We joked, laughed, and ate until we were BURSTING. To be honest I don't know what I ate. Daniel (the sushi guy) just sort of made things and set them in front of me. I asked what they were, he didn't tell me, and I dug in. I'm telling you now: DO THIS. I'm positive I wouldn't have chosen the things he made for me, but I am so, so, so glad that he did. Not only that, but it's fairly priced. For four rolls (two special), hot tea and a diet drink we paid...$33+ tip, I think? Or maybe $38, I can't remember and I'm too lazy to look it up. But coming from Traverse City, Michigan and getting this quality for this price is like heaven on earth man. I would recommend this to anyone who asked about good sushi, I would note that making sure Daniel is working/preparing your stuff is a good idea, and more than that I will be a frequent diner at this oh-so-delicious establishment.

I entered the restaurant and was initially disappointed to see two non-Japanese sushi chefs and no sign of Chef Daniel. But i sat down at the bar anyways, since i drove all the way out there. Turns out there's another side of the sushi bar that wraps around and that's where the head chef was working his thing. I ordered the chirashi (basically a mixture of sashimi, tamago, anything the chef deems fresh over a bed of sushi rice)... the waitress had no idea what i was talking about, but the Mexican sushi chef immediately piped up saying they can do it. The chirashi was arranged beautifully. The most creative. In my head, i was craving Hamachi (yellowtail) like there was no tomorrow, and somehow this chirashi was mostly yellowtail... at least 6 pieces. There was also salmon, red tuna, some sort of crab salad mound, tamago egg, and seaweed salad. Everything tasted great. Only thing was that the salmon cuts were a little bad since there was a fibrous piece that made it hard to bite through. Food: 4.5 stars Service: 4 Ambiance: 4 stars Overall: 4 star

I can't tell you if it's the spicy Edamame or the happiest sushi chef I have ever met but it's one of these that makes going to Yoko's such a pleasure. Sit at the Sushi bar and enjoy a great meal. Be aware if you go early enough there are plenty of kids around

My girlfriend and I were driving around downtown Tampa and came across this little hole in the wall place that's hidden in a small shopping center. Not much to say about the inside, but the sushi was spot on. They had some rolls on their menu that I haven't seen before. I like different when it comes to sushi. Restaurants seem to always have the same thing. So it was a nice change. The service was really good and our food was brought out pretty quick. If I ever happen to be in the area again, I will definitely come and eat here again for some good and fairly inexpensive sushi.

We go to Yoko's a lot for lunch during the work week since it's close to the office. The service is always quick and friendly. They have some stellar rolls and great lunch specials. The thing that stops them from being a 4 star place is that they water down the soy sauce. It's just awful. I'm fine with the low sodium stuff but it appears that they water it down to cut costs. It's ashame because it really is a good little lunch spot.

Went there last week because we haven't had sushi in a VERY long time. WHAT a disappointment. You would think that being so close to the ocean there would be good seafood. Unfortunately we have yet to find it. The sushi was ok, but we have have had much better back home in Tucson (the middle of the desert), and the appetizers were extremely small. The service was the only thing we are willing to applaud. The waitress' wear Kimono's, which is cool. But our waitress was really attentive and checked on us constantly. So I guess we are still on the hunt for good seafood. Raw or cooked. Will not be going back and wouldn't recommend it.

Where else can you get a grilled chicken roll? I am a fan of cooked and vegetable rolls, and Yoko's is one of the best in Tampa. The chefs don't look Japanese, but they have Japanese hands! Try the Hawaiian Roll, with rice paper, fried shrimp, pineapple and cream cheese. The sweet potato roll with eel sauce is fantastic, and their selection of veggie rolls keeps my Weight Watchers tracker happy.

Great service and absolutely delicious sushi, at an average price for the cuisine. Only cons were the waits for everything were quite long and the seating was very close. Wonderful food and wait staff made it great though. Dress casually.

I live right by Yoko's so I routinely find myself stopping in for a Sushi Fix. The place is very traditional, so if you are looking for more new age sushi creations with mango, look elsewhere. That being said they do a very good job at what they do. Their sushi rice has a very distinct, but pleasant taste. I'm currently addicted to their Spicy Craw fish roll and my Girlfriend is in love with their Sister roll.

The food was great, the service was questionable. The waitress forgot O ordered soup not salad. I got salad but it was a quick fix. She exchanged it but when she carries the bowl of soup, her thumb wad in it! Other than that, the pork kastu don was great. Get the tempura appetizer!

The ingredients are fresh, the service is friendly and prompt, & the whole place has a very comfortable atmosphere even with the new addition. Ask to be seated at the bar for the best experience, & if possible, sit by Daniel, the head chef, and ask him to make you something special. He'll ask you what kind of fish you like or if you just want a surprise, and then he'll whip up something tasty. It's gotten to the point where I never order anything anymore, I just ask Daniel to make me a meal! As regulars, every time we come in now Yoko comes by and chats with us and asks after our families. Despite being a fair-sized sushi restaurant it has a very family-run feel to it. My favorite sushi restaurant out of all of my haunts in Los Angeles, San Francisco / Berkeley, and Tampa!

I've been to almost every sushi spot in Tampa and I must say Yoko's sits in the top three. Great sushi! The buccaneer roll and caterpillar are excellent! The nigiri is very fresh. I agree that design and ambience could be better, but the food is top notch. Also the little old grandma that works there gets upset if you don't eat all your sushi, its really funny. Apparently she wants to make sure you roll out of there. I give it a four because it could use some aesthetic improvements.

Good food ... Had the seaweed salad and Love Roll for lunch. Even thought the food came out slow, if you've got the time, it's worth the go.

This is probable the nicest Japanese restaurant I've been to in Tampa. Service was EXCELLENT. Our waitress was very attentive and nice. The food, however, was just average. It's great compared to some other restaurants in Tampa, but not compared to other restaurants I've tried elsewhere. I gave them 4 stars though because it's rare nowadays to find such exceptional service.

The service here is excellent! Their sushi is great! Specialty rolls are usually your best bet if you want sushi-- you can't really go wrong ordering them!
