EVERY location has its own local burger joint that serves as not only cheap eats but a local showing of local community and tastes and for Tampa, this seemed to be one of them, and it was pretty good. This place offers steakburbers, appetizers and shakes 24 hours a day! and thats always good for the late night traveler wanting to do something local and avoid being a "tourist". This place has an oldskoo retro look like the diners back home...but its suprisingly cheaper....very cheap actually. (4-7$ a person). They have a specials menu for basket dishes with fries for 3.99 even. Its a good deal for quick eats. The shakes have some interesting options from two-colored to snickers and caramel apple. The burgers were very tasty and the fries were the crispy shoestring type. Overall for what it is its pretty good. We'd eat here again on the go and tell others looking for something quick simple and cheap to do the same :)

Sadly, they 'updated' this store about a decade ago... taking away the awesome old menu board that stood behind the place since the 50s... They built in its place a typical boring old Steak N Shake (albeit with actual working bathrooms) and generally made this location just like all the rest. I really miss the old place, it was far cooler and had a far better vibe... the food remains the same (yummy) although they need to dial back the salt in just about every freaking thing they make - especially the chili, which I now find inedible. The burgers remain top freaking notch.

Apparently if you're from the West Coast, you'll hate this place. Thanks for visiting Tampa folks...now go back home. They're open 24-7 and they make a good burger. Their fries aren't worth me eating but I can be coaxed under alcohol. They used to be pretty expensive if I recall, but they agressively lowered their prices during TTET (These Tough Economic Times). You can get out of there for less that $5 in the drive thru. No this isn't a destination to go out of the way for, but it's there when/if you need it.

Service was lacking and somewhat amusing. One waitress was having a bad day or issues with others. Our waitress barely remembered our order and shakes take forever. We found out the hard way that they need to ask for your burger toppings otherwise they come plain. We were hungry and ate the puny burgers before wondering where the tomato, lettuce and all were. Oh, she says that we needed to tell her and she should have asked. Duh! So the kiddos wanted McD (for the toys) and we tried. But I can't say that this is any better. You get what you pay for... And the poor guy waiting for his shakes for a long time was fuming at the counter.

Steak n Shake has the best fast food hands down. We go here a lot after long nights of racing since it's open 24/7. The $4 Menu is pure genius! Most of the time I get the double steakburger with cheese and it's more than enough. The chili is outstanding and I am always trying to recreate the taste at home. The shakes are delicious and great with your meal or after for dessert. Usually I stick with a classic vanilla. The best part is Steak n Shake mails out coupons all the time and allows you to use more than one! We had a mishap with some poor packaging on a carry-out order once and let the manager know. He gave us a gift card to replace the meal and was very apologetic about the whole thing. You may not think of fast food places as having good customer service, but Steak n Shake goes above and beyond to make their customers happy.

I was dragged here by my drunk friend who was celebrating her birthday who was badly craving a grilled cheese sandwich. I don't mind eating at Steak n' Shake, I mind the disrespectful entitled drunks who have tendency to dine at these establishments late nights. I am still chuckling from a late night message I received a from a fellow Elite Yelper questioning my dining choice for that hour. Ahem..you know who you are J! It was just past midnight, so luckily the place was not too overcrowded. There were parents with kids (why God why?). Once again, yes school is out, but shouldn't they be home asleep? There were also some high school kids and then also several men going through their midlife crisis phases sitting at the dining counter. Kim was our server. She was very sweet and attentive and very easy to make conversation with. My friend finally ordered her Grilled Cheese sandwich, with fries and a side of pickles. The Grilled Cheese Sandwich looked amazing. It was grilled on Texas Toast! The fries and the pickles seemed soggy. Ms. Drunky McDrunkerson was incessantly complaining about the fries and pickles and she continued to shove them down her throat, then cleaned her plate! I ordered the Three-Way Chili. Yes, although it did not look aesthetically pleasing, it wasn't too bad. I had been craving spaghetti for weeks, but I have been trying to cut out carbs. Why not have some here with a "little something something"? There were an overabundance of chili beans, but I dealt with it. My friend ordered a Cookies and Cream Milkshake, but it took some time to make because they were short staffed. The manager was so kind to make one for her. Yes, It isn't my idea of fine dining, but definitely a good place for a late night snack!

My niece asked to be taken here as her treat after school. She wanted chilli and a burger. The line in the drive thru took forever and I almost left. The attendant at the window was rude and curt. I just think the food is ok but my niece was pleased but she is also 7 so go figure. It's a fast food burger spot and that's the kind of service and food you get. The best part of the meal is the milkshake if you get one.

Have not been here in a long time; don't usually care for fast food style burgers but it was really good today! And their fries are the long and skinny ones and delicious, not greasy. Kids eat free on the weekends. Also excellent milk shakes. The service is always questionable, it's the luck of who you get!

I'm not sure whether this place deserves the second star, but I'll give it for the hostess who was super nice and really tried to help us out. Long story short: they have no idea how to handle a crowded restaurant and the manager was totally clueless. They ended up giving us our meal for free for pretty much no reason. We were on a lunch break from a business seminar and didn't have a ton of time. We debated the drive-through, but assumed we'd have time for a quick sit-down meal. We informed the manager when we walked in that we were a little pressed for time. The place was busy (Saturday afternoon), but not crazy. We waited 1 minute for a table. The hostess (told us she wasn't our server) saw we were in a hurry, so offered to take our order. She ended up being really nice about the whole situation, so we tipped her on the way out. The order was submitted to the kitchen within 5 mins of sitting down. After we had finished our drinks and waited a total of 15 minutes, we asked to change it to a To-Go order. We didn't have time to eat it there. The kitchen had trouble finding our order to switch it... because they hadn't even started it yet. So much for being in a hurry. It was at least 10 more minutes before they brought our food to the counter. My dad offered his credit card, but the manager made some excuse why he couldn't process it. I would have just thrown down $20 cash, but he said just to take it for free. "But you better pay me $1,000 next time!" he says (in a serious tone). Best part of the story: as we were leaving, the line to get a table was long. The elderly woman at the table next to us said to her friend "We've been here 45 mins... do you think they lost our order?" I don't know if it's the kitchen or just a drive-through priority, but they need serious training on how to manage the restaurant. Food was ok, milkshake was decent. In general I like these restaurants, but I'm not touching this one with a 10-foot pole next time.

Worst service ever. Never got any water or napkins. Waited an hour for our milkshakes. When customers complained to the manager, he blamed everything on this new server guy. Even if it was server's fault, manager should've taken full responsibility.

  • Jacob H.

Good food, service is mostly good but can be lacking defending on the server. The main issue is the filth, this place constantly feels dirty from the bathrooms that will get cleaned maybe once a year to the sticky booster seats, although the constant tint of darkness on the floors shows they have never been bleached! But hey you can't beat the prices!

Went back to try again and WORSE this time around!!! Waited 15 minutes at the drive through, screwed up my order 100% and tried to feed me a piece of "meat" that was see through. I went back in, manager was unapologetic and did not care that my order was incorrect and took so long. Ended up going to PDQ and calling corporate to complain. Horrible food, horrible service and Horrible management!!!! Permanently lost our business and will be sharing our distaste with friends by word of mouth.

This particular Steak and Shake is located across from Plant High school, and has been there for years. The owner is active in the community, and many students stop in for a burger and shake. It's always crowded except for the mornings. I have eaten many a burger and shake here myself. If you need to make sure your heart is OK try a Frisco melt, shake, and chili cheese fries. If that doesn't drive you over the edge you are going to live for a few more years, if not you die happy. When I am being good, I substitute a salad for fries, but the tomato, peppers and non-lettuce ingredients are finely diced, and I don't care for that. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, and they serve a good breakfast. My schedule often has me on the road before dawn, and two quick eggs with a bracing cup of coffee is a good start. It's not the greatest coffee. I recommend you try the egg sandwiches with sourdough. I like them with a steakburger patty, and not sausage. It's not gourmet, but sometimes there is nothing like a diner burger.

Honestly is the worse restaurant you can go. We literally waited 35 min for a brownie, when they were not wen food. The manager is rude and is not even helpful. She does not apologize at all and is the worst customer service I have experience in Tampa. With the exception of Tyrone which is a server and was the only one helpful. Terrible experience.

This place is good if you want cheap and fast but are sick of the regular fast food chains. Don't expect too much, chances are they will get your order wrong and it will end up cold. Its a retirement hot spot for a reason (the elderly lack taste buds).

    (2)
  • Nicole L.

Sat in line for 25 minutes. Ended up with a cold burger and my milkshake was terrible! The picture of the caramel nut turtle shake shows layers of chocolate and a layer of caramel. Basically it was a vanilla shake with a light drizzle of the caramel.

Good food, good prices and good service. A great solution for a quick meal or snack while on the road. They offer "happy hour" for their fountain drinks! I love their Diet Cokes with vanilla syrup!

  • Joanne B.

Used to be a favorite of ours, but not what it used to be. The fries always seen to be cold and the new servers or kitchen crew seem to be confused on what to do. Think this location will ONCE AGAIN be off our list of places to go.

  • Bethany J.

Sat in line for 20 minutes. Moved twice. Didn't have another 30 minutes to wait in drive-thru so went over to PDQ and even though there was a line similar to Steak and Shake's, I ordered, paid, and was out of there in 10 minutes.

This place was so slow at lunch with no customers or servers around I had to walk out! I have to say, I'm a very patient person. I will wait for a while to be seated or to place my order, but when I have to wait for 10 minutes at the counter to be acknowledged, that's when I feel it has been too long. I was there at 11:30am, had to walk out at 11:40am. I have to preface this statement though, there was a server who saw me but continued to clean tables and help the currently seated table (there was only one table of people in the entire restaurant). For now, the Steak N Shake is not in my good graces, but if I go to another and actually get to eat, I may have a new opinion.

This is a little (aka a lot) out of my usual zone, but I was visiting my sister in Tampa and she and her husband told me I had to check it out. After about a 10 min discussion with my brother in law over the difference between a frappe and a shake (he is not from MA) I agreed to go. We came in during happy hour and we were one of the only three parties. The place was virtually dead. But I have to give the server credit for not looking at us funny when my sister insisted on me getting a paper hat and crayons. More importantly the frappes/shakes were really good. I got a Turtle and the only complaint is that it was understandablly hard to suck up the chocolate and caromel through the straw (sexual innuendos were flying). My sister got the mint chip and my brother-in-law got the banana. I liked the banana the least, but it could have been really good if it was side by side with either chocolate or strawberry. I did not have the steak as I don't eat steak, but my sister and her husband gave me their private review stating that they were "really good". We got the cheese fries for the table. The fries are very thin, which I'm not really a big fan of and the cheese was highly lacking in flavor... but what made me love this... was the hot sauce. I drenched mine in it. It's basically hot peppers in a bottle with some water and vinegar in between. I was really trying to put the bottle in my purse before the waitress caught on but my sister insisted that I do not commit theft in her new home town, so the bottle remained on the table. Also, for non-meat eaters there is very little selection. There was one salad, one side salad and a grilled cheese. Basically I gave the place 3 stars based on the shakes and the hot sauce.

The burgers here are great as are the fries. What's best though is what's in the name. The shakes are awesome. I love this place but can't eat here very much as I'd be 800lbs.

looking for a place to eat late at night is serious business...us New Yorkers aren't used to places closing at 10pm! thankfully we came across this 24hr joint.... their burgers are good, i would say better than johnny rockets. and sandwiches are less greasy!!

The locals looove this place...although I'm not sure why. Maybe they dont know any better. This is your average burger/shake joint that is on every corner in So Cal. Nothing fantastic. Maybe living in the heat and humidity makes this place more appealing to the locals. When you feel like having a burger and a shake..this is a good alternative to McDonalds.

***The East Coast Answer....well the rest of the country's answer to In and Out: steaknshake.com/menu/bur… I'm pretty glad this place doesn't make it past Texas. Being in Tampa was like being in an even more White Trash capital than even Reno. My friends and I call this WT for short. Average weight in Tampa for the females was about 150 for the twenty sumthings. The service in this place wasn't awful, but really what was the point, because the food was not on par with the West Coast joints in Cali. I guess being the birthplace of fast food us West Coasters know how to do it. The burgers were decent, but the MEAT WAS SO THIN. Carla Peller would not have been happy. If you don't know who the "where's the beef" lady is check out: query.nytimes.com/gst/fu… I do love the shakes and this place was ok, but nothing shaketacular. If you are visiting the East or Midwest, I recommend just trying some of these joints as a Food Network Tour.

mmmm, Side by Side Milk shake-- you get 2 flavors poured side by side in one glass, tasty & fun-- all in one! The steakburgers are okay, but you can get better burgers elsewhere. Steak n' Shake is a chain and is a step above a fast food joint.

i looooove my some steak n shake - only the shake side, of course. ever since getting the hockey package on direct tv i've become obsessed with this place. watching all the tampa bay lightning games and all the steak n shake commercials... well you can see why. since they came out with the fruit and yogurt shake i feel less guilty about stopping in when in tampa for that yummy delicious beverage. it's one of the highlights of my tampa trips.

We all know steak and shake hell I'd need the fingers and toes of my entire family to count the number of different people and times of been there with. I'm my mind they remain the milkshake kings (though their burgers do seem abut small to me) the variety of burger options and favors surprises me every time and the fact they have chili let alone three to five way chili touchs my soul. (In a good way) tht being say at this specific location the staff tends to be forgetful but mostly on the little things

I drove all the way to South Tampa for a Frisco Melt and they served me a charred patty sandwich with cheese, no sauce, no edible meat, no lettuce tomato, no cut, no box. I got garbage wrapped up in a paper. My milkshake I ordered was to be chocolate Heath but I got just chocolate with what I believe to be a sprinkle of Heath shavings garnish on top of the whip cream. I paid $9.01 for this order. I have called over and over since I was able to see what they had sold me to no avail. I refuse to drive all the way back so late at night but I will be going there for a full refund tomorrow. I have wasted enough time writing this review for such an awful experience. All I wanted was a famous steak burger that this company is know for and I really should have been weary when I saw the 2 and a half stars next to this address.

There is only an occasional visit to this Steak n' Shake, but it is not because of poor service, value or bad experiences. The few times I have been a customer have all been worthwhile, whether I'm in the drive-thru or picking up at the counter. As the restaurant promotes, everything I've ever had here seems made-to-order and nothing has tasted below expectations. I've always thought Chick-fil-A did a good job of hiring and training employees, and this Steak n' Shake seems to be in that same class. One particular experience where a manager named Paul J assisted me directly was very nice as he certainly made me feel like a valued customer and talked to me like an old friend. Since there are very few true "diners" in the area, this is not a bad option after hours either. And if I did have any reason to frequent Plant High as an employee or a student, this place would certainly get much more of my business. (PDQ still would not)

I ordered a milkshake and a bowl of chili with onions. The milkshake was water so I sent it back and the replacement was even worse. I like onions, but the bowl was over half onion so I started spooning it out. It ended up a pile next to the shakes I didn't drink. THEN they tried to charge us for two milk shakes! The service was fine, but the back of the house needs help. I haven't gotten such poor food at a restaurant that I can remember.

I am a south Tampa regular at this location, I do not know if it just tonight or what, however I received about 50% of the sauces i ordered, my frisco melt wasn't even cut in half and they gave me no napkins still four stars because I know they usually are amazing. I was just highly disappointed I ordered a sweet tea and they me sprite I mean come on......

  • Stacy P.

Gone here four times now, and every time, they mess up our order. Do not even think about the online ordering option, because you will receive NOTHING that you ordered, just what they decided to throw into the meal. I ordered a chicken frisco melt, asked for extra frisco sauce on the sandwich, and on the side. Received a Chicken Frisco Melt with no sauce at all. Ordered a chocolate ice cream chocolate chip cookie dough milkshake- received a vanilla icecream shake with pieces of crumbled oreo in it. Ordered chili cheese fries, received regular fries, cold. Ordered a Royale Steak Burger, NO MAYONNAISE- received more mayo than any one person should consume on a sandwich. This is really sad, because I Do normally enjoy Steak N Shake food, but this particular restaurant is the absolute worst.

I've always loved Steak 'n Shake. It's your run of the mill diner-style fast food. The cheeseburgers are a small step up from the McDonalds of the world, but for about the same price. The menu seems to have expanded lately, too! Lots of exotic burgers are popping up, like the Jalapeno Crunch and the Guacamole Steakburgers. I was never a big fan of chili growing up, but as my palate has expanded I've come to love it and Steak 'n Shake's version is pretty great. I always get it as a side with my burger. However, I learned not to get it to go after having the styrofoam container melt and get chili all over my car.. I guess it was a little too fresh! The district manager was very sweet after I told him what happened and even promptly sent me a gift card to make up for it. The wait staff has always been fast at this location in my experience as well. Let's not forget the shakes! My favorite is chocolate for a classic treat or Oreo Mint Cookies & Cream if I'm really gonna go all out! Cheap, easy, delicious.. Steak 'n Shake is simply my kind of meal-on-the-go.

6/01/15 Here we are again. My Grand daughter and I love the flavor of their hamburgers. On this evening things didn't go so well though. We got there about 6:40pm and were seated immediately. They was no crowd at all. Grand daughter ordered kids cheeseburger and I tried something new which was the chicken fingers. She liked hers but mine was something not so good. The 3 chicken fingers looked like nuggets, nothing like menu picture, and the fries were few, over cooked and hard. Called manager to table and asked if I was being served a kids meal and he said no. He offered two more "nuggets" which never arrived. My waitress, Jazmine, never came back to check on us so we paid and left. Food is usually well portioned and tasty but service and food failed miserably this time.
