The beer selection may be the best in the south. The food is also that good. And less expensive than it should be. I recommend a nice import craft beer and the dunder von bomb sandwich. It is huge and unbelievably good. Also, look for swinehakzen... Probably not spelled correctly by yours truly, it's a pork knuckle. Or order whatever, the beer and food will all be good.

Just ate the zegeuner schnitzel...I'll have to say it is one of the best dishes I've had in all of tampa. I specifically got the white! The down side is, I have to go back to work :)

Absolutely awesome. The schnitzel portions were enormous. They need their own ZIP Code. They were absolutely delicious. Potato pancakes rocked as well as the Perogies. The beer selection was everything you would expect a topline German restaurant to have. The service could not have been any better. Jason took fabulous care of us and everything came out hot and fresh and exactly on time. I enjoyed being able to purchase items that I have never seen anywhere other than in Germany after the meal as well. This is a German restaurant that would be proud to be operating in, and would be very successful in Germany itself. I will definitely be back here.

We were visiting from out of town and a friend told us to try Dunderbak's. We were not disappointed. The schnitzel is good, even though I am not used to German food. My wife and I enjoyed the Man Cave, and the incredible selection of food. The Pommes Frittes are a nice appetizer. I can't remember the name, but the wheat noodles are a fantastic side. Only 1 visit, but I am impressed and happy. Especially with the portions.

Why 4 stars? Because German food is my newest obsession. --- --- --- After eating off the un-named German food truck at Oktoberfest, I am officially obsessed. My Grandmother is from Germany, but I somehow missed ever experiencing this "wunderbar" cuisine. Just like at Oktoberfest, I went with a Schniztel (with Jagersauce), kartoffelsalat, and spaetzel. I will say, Dunderbak's wasn't AS phenomenal as the food truck, but it was still definitely solid. The beer selection is really vast, especially for a place so close to USF. I wonder how this place does so well, as I would think only the cheapest restaurants in town would really succeed near a university. You know, Chipotle, Five Guys, Taco Bus #4, etc. But it's a credit to Dunderbak's for being awesome enough to succeed in an unconventional location. But back to the beer selection, as good as it is, I'm shocked that they don't have a single hefeweizen on tap! Our server was very helpful and attentive. I wish I remembered his name, but all I can tell you is -he has a beard. And it's serious.

Update: WHAT WAS I THINKING?! After eating here 5+ times, begrudgingly, might I add, I don't know what ever possessed me to write such a good review. The sour cream schnitzel is way too heavy and straight up bland. Maybe I just got lucky the first time? Anywho, I've tried a few of their other dishes and they were all completely unmemorable. They get 3 stars instead of two because the apfel strudel and roasted potato side are still badass, but that's about the only thing I'd get there now. Yum! My husband is German in heritage, American in nationality, and loves German food! He introduced me to Schnitzel Haus way back when, and we finally had the opportunity to branch out to Dunderbak's now that we're living in the Tampa Palms area. Dunderbak's is pretty large with a cute German environment. I'm not a beer drinker, so the huge selection did nothing for me. I am, however, a sweets junkie and I absolutely love that they have tons and tons of German candy available for purchase. Not to mention the deli case where you can pick up meats, cheeses, and sausages to go. I see a sausage fest in future. On the grill, that is. The service was quick and super friendly and the food was delicious! I had the pork schnitzel smothered in a mushroom, wine, and sour cream sauce. It was so good!! I tried both the hot and cold potato salad but wasn't a fan if either. I'm partial to the now defunct Schnitzel Haus's version of German potato salad. We finished up with apfel strudel and it was the perfect dessert to top off our meal. I'm drooling a little just thinking about it. All in all, I was very impressed! We'll be back!

The food, as always was great. I tried the sour cream schnitzel. Delicious. My husband had the hawaiian schnitzel, which he liked. The service was great, very friendly. The is one of our favorite places to eat.

What an odd place. Having spent a lot of time in German stubes, I find the decoration and design of this place unnatural and uncomfortable. There is just random bric-a-brac everywhere. Though they have patio seating, it's on a narrow sidewalk that looks out onto the strip mall parking lot, and the inside seating area has no windows so it feels like you're in a casino or a movie theater and can not determine when the sun has set. There's a gazebo in the middle of the dining room floor and the tables are awkwardly set around it, and three interior walls of the dining room are cluttered with racks of warm beer and wine bottles, chocolate, chips, tins of herring and other international foods. So if you want to browse these items you end up sticking your butt into someone's shoulder as they sit at their table. The beer list is extensive and the selection is quite good (Thiriez Xtra and Saint Germain/Nogne-O collaboration on tap and Schlenkerla in bottles make me happy), but prices are high for small draft pours - they use the smaller 10oz Belgian tulips and charge between $5-7 for these. And $10 for a liter of some draft beer wouldn't be so bad if the ones available at this price were any good (who the hell could drink a liter of Okocim?) Food menu is a lot of German-style schnitzel with some odd "twists", as they say, like cheese and ham, or white gravy, or fried eggs. Overall I give them props for curating a great beer selection but the location and ambiance are fake-y and after a few hours I desperately wanted to leave and never hear German folk music again.

In the mood for a fine assortment of bier? Ya? Come here to Mr Dunderbak's where the beers always served nice and cold. My favorite dish is Cheese Spatzle with Havarti. Smallish semolina shapes with ham and the cheese all over. Wunderbar. Monday nights is Pub Trivia Night. Prizes are given for first, second , and third place in the form of gift certificates for the restaurant. Prices are reasonable. So come one come all to Mr Dunderbak's.

There on Sat 28 Feb. place was crowded for a great reason. The food was great, the folks who work there made sure we had everything we needed and didn't keep us waiting. I know I'm going back again an again. A great experience!!

One of my all time favorite restaurants! Hubby and I have taken to ordering one Sammy and one schnitzel meal and splitting. There are too many choices. Our favorite sandwich is the blue max. Super soft bread, perfect meat and a blue cheese sauce. I LOVE the zeguinder schnitzel and always get spaetzel and kraut with it. Get the potato pancakes as an app so you can have more of them. Yummy! The kids menu has a few choices, but the quality of the food is not the same. Beer totally makes up for that, though! Everyone who is a server or working at the bar knows their stuff. You can ask for little sips if there is anything you want to try. Plan on enjoying your food/beer and staying a while. Service isn't lightening fast but for the setup inside and type of restaurant it is, I can't imagine it otherwise.

I've been to Germany a few times and ate at many German Restaurants in the U.S.. This place is top notch! I couldn't believe how great this place is! The beer selection alone is enough to keep coming back. I had the Weiner Schnitzel and it was more than enough to fill me up. Plus the spetzle and potato pancakes were excellent. My wife had the Schnitzel with Sour Cream sauce and loved it as well. This place has an authentic deli and all the candy and regular treats etc straight from Germany. I wish I lived closer or I would eat here every day! If you love German food, you can't miss out on this place. And if you have never tried German food before, this place should be your first stop.

I've been coming to this place for years - back when it was in the University Mall - and it is always fantastic. My personal favorites are the Blue Max (you have to get it GRILLED!), sour cream schnitzel, champaign walnut cheese spread, fried pickles, potato pancakes and cold German potato salad. Besides the food, the beer selection is extensive. There are now quite a delicious places to get European and craft beer but Dunderbak's has been slingin 'em for years and knows how to make a good impression. The staff is always well trained and even though the place gets jam packed, they still kill it. I'll be going to this place for years to come. HIGHLY recommended.

The sauerbraten (beef roast) recently got changed and the change wasn't a good one. As a regular, the beef roast was once my favorite dish when it was a solid chunk of meat that didn't even need a knife because it was so tender. Now they give you about 3 big slices of a tough meat that looks like roast beef and taste like they're boiled. Also beware of the beer snobs. I asked where I could get an idea of what beers they had and my waiter told me online so I asked him for a dogfish head beer listed on their website he told me he had never heard of it and went on a pompous rant where he told me that the full beer list was only in his head. Later I guess he realized his mistake and told me they didn't have it because the beer was a limited edition and that it was being auctioned for $70. I'd like to know where because I found it for $12 the next day at whole foods. If you wear a shirt that says 'beer geek,' own up to it and don't be a prick and laugh at people and tell them their beer choices sound like burgers.

We were looking for a fun location to meet a friend for dinner that was close to Bush Gardens but not too touristy/chain. This was suggested and was a great choice! Loved the beer choices (especially after a hot day at the park). The food was very good and the service was fanatic. My son loved it! Would go again if we are in the area!

Pomme Frites-These fried potatoes are the best that I've tried in the bay area. They lack the sweetness and dairy of Datz, aren't too thick or thin and feature a great balance of crisp and soft. The Pomme Frites also aren't overly salted, something that most potatoes can't claim. The Vegetarian Reuben-make this light on the thousand island and I'm good to go. It is served with a pickle and chips. The Reuben is an exercise in crispy mush. The top piece of bread is baked to a toast like texture while the inside (sauerkraut, cheese and thousand island dressing) and bottom slice are soggy. I didn't mind it. Someone with a texture problem, probably would. There is a fine line that this Reuben walks. One that dances between too creamy and just right. I've eaten the Reuben twice and the first time it was brilliant. The second time the preparer had put just a little too much dressing on it and it punched me in the gut (for days to come). Potato Pancakes-These lovely little beauts are wonderful dipped in applesauce (they also offer sour cream but, whatever, I'm not down with that). Fried Green Beans-Yeah baby! Nicely fried on the outside to give a crispy punch to the veggies that lie within.

While on vacation, we were heading to Tampa from Orlando and discovered Mr. Dunderbaks on yelp. We can't agree more strongly with the other reviews. The homemade potato pancakes are seasoned, lightly fried, and delectable. My wife had the sour cream schnitzel, "smothered in cream and white wine and mushroom-herbed gravy". I had the schnitzel Italia, "layered with Black Forest ham and provolone, and a tomato mushroom herb sauce". Both entrees were breaded pork, with a dollop of sauce on top, and every single bite was chock full of flavor. And they were only $11 each! I tried several beers as a small sample, which the waitress helped me choose. My favorite was the weissenohe monks Fest, which was a bit nutty, with great complexity and a smooth, polished finish. The runner up was the ayinger brau weisse, a wheat beer which filed the mouth superbly. I could have stayed longer for the beers if I weren't so full! Not only was the homemade apple sauce savory, but it complemented the homemade apple strudel we had for desert, which had walnuts, raisins, a generous helping of cinnamon, and whipped cream. After buying a beer glass to go, and some extra apple sauce for the road, our bill was still under $50! Compared to many other places we have been to, it is rare to find such great prices for such amazing food!!!

Amazing! Like being in Munich. Unbelievable selection of beers ( I got my Spaten Optimator). Terrific menu, large but not overwhelming. My wife enjoyed everything! Real, warm German Potato salad!!! We will go back again and again. Service was great, very knowledgable about the art of brewing.

I love this place! I love the decor and the beer selection. I also loved the potato pancakes, chicken cordon blue bites, AND their cute, little market of chocolates!! I mean, you can't be unhappy when there's a chocolate store across from where you're sitting. Will be returning shortly!!!

I'd rate Mr. Dunderbaks a 2.5, just above "Meh" but a tad lower than "A-OK". We were promptly seated on a Saturday night and our waiter greeted us with a warm welcome. He made sure to ask if we had any questions or suggestions on brews, as the list was quite extensive (50+ brews on tap!) Sadly, the beer was the highlight of our dining experience. We ordered the "chicken cordon bleu" balls (my boyfriend's choice). They lacked seasoning, but did arrive hot and had a nice ranch dipping sauce to accompany it. Unfortunately, the dipping sauce is all I tasted as they lacked flavor. For main entrees, my boyfriend ordered the Jagerschnitzel and I ordered the weekend special of the grilled pork shank. The Jagerschnitzel was decent and unpretentious with a standard hunter's gravy on top. The hunter's gravy was quite flavorful. He ordered it with their German potato salad and green beans. The potato salad was delicious, but the beans were reminiscent of the Green Giant canned variety that sit on grocery store shelves nationwide. My pork shank was rather large in size, like other reviewers had mentiond on Yelp. However, it boasted only about 40% meat... the rest was a tough skin that was hard to cut through and fat. I was sadly disappointed, as our server said it was their "special dish". On the upside, the German potato pancakes were fabulous and flavorful, and so was their pierogie. Sandwiches were floating by us and looked to be the better choice. The ambience was wonderful and so were the brews. I would come back if I'm ever in the area and try their reuben or New Yorker sandwich and see if they fare better than their more expensive counterparts. Review update upon next venture to Bruce B Downs....

We like this place, I only deducted a star for a few problems. What is great is that this is one of the few places in the bay area where you can get edible German food, and the beer selection is great. And they are open late. I have really enjoyed the schnitzels, and the paprika gulasch especially. The veal meatloaf is tasty, kind of like a bologna, but they don't give enough sautéed onions. The sauerbraten meat quality is not too good. The side vegetables of green beans are overcooked, and the potato salads are either too bland or vinegary. The red cabbage and saurkraut and cucumber salad are all too vinegary. The herb roasted potatoes are nothing special. The vegetable soup was very good. Unfortunately they use Boar's head deli meats which are too salty and rubbery. But overall, its one of the few places that have good hearty meals available after other restaurants have closed. Nice to stop for dinner at after seeing a show!

Been coming here since it was in the mall. Love the 'new' place. I actually bring my friends from Germany here! Beer selection is awesome and the food is good too! The long tables are authentic from Germany and make it a great place for groups. There is a room that can be reserved in advance for really large groups. (Otherwise it is just general seating.) Also a few tables outside. A super fun atmosphere.

While I miss the cozy spot that once was Mr. Dunderbak's in University Mall, I am 100% sure they made the right call to get out of dodge before it imploded. And judging by the huge crowd (granted, it was the first day of Octoberfest) it was a brilliant business decision. I don't know how much I can go into the beer selection because it is constantly changed and for Octoberfest they had many German varieties that you can find anywhere else. Their taps are also always changing so I'm not sure if I've ever ordered the same thing twice. The huge selection and my curious spirit have kept me relying on husband for his steady hand and love to be the DD for years. I just have to try as many as possible. Food wise, I'm a poor yelper at German restaurants. Most serve brats and wursts along with cheesy spaetzle that I'm not ever going to be into. BUT, Dunderbak's has my "bak" and serves the most delicious potato pancakes you will ever taste. Order with both apple sauce and sour cream (trust me) and savor the Germany-goodness. Another favorite are their pretzels.....served warm with spicy mustard. Seriously, there is nothing more amazing with lots of beer than lots of carbs. I'm the epitome of a classy lady at Dunderbak's, that for sure. Cheers!

The food is excellent. I had the New Red Baron sandwich and it was wonderful. If going just for the food, it is 4 stars. However, the staff used obscene language a couple times. The waiter was partially attentive. The atmosphere is strange but interesting. There's wine and beer everywhere but there's also foreign candy and other interesting foods. I would take adults, but not kids.

I went here recently on a visit to Tampa and felt I was as close as I was going to get to Germany for a while. Just had beer and hot pretzels (glad to hear there are vegetarian options) and it was a great experience. Was able to get several beers on draft that I have been buying for years in bottles, the draft versions are much better! The hot pretzels with a variety of German-style mustards were great too. It's a grocery, deli and beer hall too and the rest of the place is mind-boggling for fans of German food and drink--shelf upon shelf of hard-to-find German beers and pantry items, much better selection than the international grocery I go to in St. Louis. A real gem for the Tampa area, how lucky you are!

Super nice staff. Ok it goes downhill from there. As I have German blood, I was disappointed in this restaurant. I heard from friends that this place was great, I think they were talking about the Beer choices. I had the schnitzel, it was too thick, the crust was soggy, and the veal was chewy. It was a cross between chicken and pork. My wife had a dish with three different sausages, bland no flavor. But it seems that tampa residence are satisfied with mediocre german food? Ps the sides were better!

Just had dinner with my family here this past weekend. The food was decent. Service was ok. Im not happy about being charged twice on my debit card. I learned later after catching the mistake on my bank account that the server mistakingly ran it for the full amount and then ran it again, splitting the bill in half as I had asked him to do. The issue resolved itself but I was never told there was an issue until I pulled up my account online the following day. If management reads this, I only ask that you please tell your servers to notify customers of any funny business that happens during the payment process. Seeing my card charged twice really upset me which is why I did not give you a good review here.

A USF staple for years now, I remember when Dunderbak's was still in the University Mall. So glad they moved to a new location that isn't too far away from the original. The decor is great, lots of antiques and German ambiance everywhere. The servers are friendly and since I'm not too knowledgeable in German dining, they were happy to lend recommendations. The beer selection is large and there's always something new on tap. Dunderbak's can get very crowded.

My wife and I had an amazing Rasputin Stout beer here. Also, their sour cream schnitzel is just remarkable, it was perfectly fried and seasoned, and the sour cream sauce really helped to cut the richness of it. Service was great, and we really enjoyed the atmosphere.

Who would have thought that Tampa had an authentic German restaurant? This has easily become some of the best food I've had in Tampa. Food: I can speak to the spicy, sour cream wienerschnitzel. It was fabulous. It came with spaetzle and potato pancakes. Huge portion. The appetizer fried mushrooms were also great. Everyone's portions were way too much to finish in one sitting. Beer: 50+ taps and hundreds of bottles make this a beer-lovers dream. The German selection included a few great ones including an Oktoberfest on tap as well, which they mentioned goes through at least five kegs a week, so it must be popular. The decor adds to the fun. You walk in thinking you've left Florida. The long tables/benches somtimes pair you with other diners. That might not be for everyone, but such a fun environment makes eating there that much better. So, if you want to gorge yourself on good food and beer (believe me, you may enter a food coma) try this place.

  • Derek H.

Great beer selection and knowledgable staff. I'm big into craft brews, and I'm still always able to find something I haven't tried before. They often have a lot of local brews as well, which I think is a great plus. The food is pretty good. I've consistently enjoyed their sandwiches, but it isn't the main reason I come. There are better restaurants in tampa for food, but if you are looking to enjoy a lot of great booze that is reasonably priced than this is a great stop.

This place doesn't look like much on the outside, but once you step in...You're transported to some cozy little spot in Germany. Blaring polka music, the smell of brats cooking, and of course Bier!! The walls are lined with European gifts and candies for sale. Be sure to try their different mustards! The jalapeno one was my favorite! I tried the schnitzel holstein. You can't really go wrong with fried meat and fried eggs. My boyfriend had the Jagerschnitzel. Great tasting gravy. We ate everything! No leftovers. For your sides, try the potato cakes! Best I've ever had. The red cabbage is also a great side. It complimented the gravy well. Next time I'll have to try the sandwiches. Everyone around us was ordering them. It all looked fantastic. Great draft beer selection. It was able to please my beer-snob of a boyfriend. He had the poor waiter running circles trying to find what drink he wanted... (Thanks, server! You were so patient and awesome! Sorry for all the trouble...) Be sure to check out JB's special beer menu, if you're into craft beers!

Love this place. The selection of beer is great. The selection of authentic German food is even better. I'm glad they moved from the ghettoversity mall a few years ago. I just wish they would open a restaurant in South Tampa.

Awesome to find authentic German food in Tampa! I've had venison sausage and spaetlze, which are both fabulous! The reason it got 3 stars is due to the wait/seating. You can wait due to lack of seating and then you may have to share a bench with another party. It doesn't help when you sit with other people who do not want to scoot down to accomodate. We were sat at a joint table and the other people refused to move, but we ended asking for another table because we had a baby. The staff was a little rude and impatient with us because we requested the move. Don't sit a family with a baby at a joint table.

This is legit German food! Between the 7 of us we got potato pancakes, a couple different schnitzels, a few different kinds of brats, sour kraut, warm potato salad rolls, cucumber salad, and several different German beers. It was all amazing!!! Do yourself a solid and stop here. Amazing food and beer selection, great ambiance, and reasonable prices. Don't forget the apple streusel for dessert!! We will definitely be back!!!!

Love Dunderbaks! Authentic German food and a fun atmosphere and LOTS of beers and drinks to choose from. One late night I was really jonesing for some spaeztle but the regular menu was closed so I had a yummy bologna sandwich. I was able to get wiener schnitzel and spaetzle on my next trip and it was delicious! My dad loves German food so I can't wait to bring him here. I also love that they have raspberry lambic beer - I'm not a beer drinker and need the wimpy fruity flavor stuff. Such a fun group and staff is great and knowledgeable and they have music often.

Stop! Stop what you're doing and head over here for the zigeunerschnitzel. It is one of my favorite dishes in the bay area. German comfort food at it's finest! Do not stop there though. Why not try any number of their tasty treats? From their weisswurst, to their ruebens. Nothing here disappoints. The sides are just as good. I'm partial to the wonderfully light potato pancakes and spaetzle, but they have plenty of other sides for all different palettes. The décor is nice too. Though I miss the older, dank place in the mall:( There is so many unique items that can be purchased there too! A ton of different European sweets and meats. All different types of mustards, and authentic Hungarian hot paprika. You would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't take the time out after gorging yourself on delectable eats, to peruse all their wares. I find I like to get an item, or two, that I have no clue what it is, and try it! Who knows what kind of tastes you have been missing! Lastly, the beer. I mean what good is German Food without some beer? Well my fellow lushes, rest assured they have plenty, and of a great variety. You WILL find something you like, and the staff is always willing to help you to find something that tickles your fancy. The staff, while friendly and courteous, is a little slow at times. I feel it is because there just isn't that many of them to serve food. Sometimes it is slow and service is great. Other times.... Well, it really isn't ever that bad. I might just be too needy. Wow, I droned on and on with this review. Just go there, and you will not be disappointed. End rant.

The minute you walk into Dunderbak's, you are immersed in a European Biergarten. Everyone is friendly, and you have entered the land of beer. I have recently learned to say "sandwich" in German thanks to my Rosetta Stone, so I was maybe a little annoying. I love the beer lists on the TV. I get the Hofbrau Dunkel , it is fantastic. I love the Veal Weiner Schnitzel and The French Connection sandwich is incredible. After a few brews, I maybe chair danced to the live Akkordeon player. Good times and great food at Mr. Dunderbak's.

This place is great for a drink after work. They have a huge selection of beers (not just German, but mostly German-style), and their servers have extensive knowledge of the beers they serve. Not sure what you want? They'll bring you a small taste of anything they have on tap. I am very excited to return to try their food.

Yum! Visited Mr. Dunderbak's on a recent trip through Tampa and it did not disappoint: huge portions of German grub, and great beers. You sort of felt like you're in Germany. (and yes, I've been before) We started with I had the reuben with chips ($5.99) and gobbled it up: full of flavor, and it was fun to dip my chips into the 7-8 fun mustards our waitress brought out. My boyfriend had some sort of schnizel (breaded cutlet) sandwich that was massive, and quite tasty! Fab selection of treats and take home goods by the register. Love that they had my favorite Ritter Sport chocolate bars from Germany in every flavor imaginable. One of the best is milk chocolate with knusperflakes (corn flakes). Mmm!

I am so happy I discovered this place while in town last year. The food is an delicious combination of authentic German fare with some local twists. Their sausage is amazing, you can't go wrong with any of the choices. This last time we tried the sauerbraten and the veal schnitzel, so glad we did, delicious. They also have an incredible beer selection, something for any taste. I also really enjoy their selection of European items for purchase. It's great to be able to buy some specialty foods I can't find at the grocery store.

After living in very German Cincinnati, OH for six years, you could imagine the treat it was to find this place. Trivia (and other board games) on the table for you to play, delicious German food and beer, it is my happy place. The potato pancakes are some of the best I have ever tasted in my life, just as good as Oktoberfest.

The food is very good. Authentic German food. Atmosphere is nice, if not a little cramped. Beer selection was outstanding. I had the pork chop, and it was excellent. Red cabbage was great, German potato salad was good, but nothing special. Deserts were outstanding.

Can't stop going to this place. Discovered it before it moved to the current location, and it's only gotten better since moving. I've never been disappointed with the menu, tried the cordon bleu bites, fried pickles for appetizers, I'm a sucker for the Bratarkofflen w/ cheese, and my husband is stuck on the Oktoberfest. But I've tried a handful of other menu items and sandwiches My husband loves the beer. Most recently tried the Black Treasure Porter which is apparently brewed in Pensacola, Fl. JB, the owner is incredibly passionate about this place, he's got a great core of servers that we've seen for years. Parking can get tight on the weekends with both Mr. Dunderbak's and the Acropolis in the same plaza packing the place. Carpool as much as possible.

I'm only giving it three stars because I was in a big party and everyone else was really pleased with their experience. I learned from this that I don't like German offerings. I'm not a big meat eater, nor do I love unhealthy foods that much, so the offerings weren't great for me to choose from. I for some reason felt the need to try something aside form a salad, so I got the cheese tray and potato pancakes with applesauce and sour cream. The cheese tray with summer sausage was really expensive for what it was, and I was disappointed with what I had ordered. The potato pancakes were good, as was the homemade applesauce. We were in a large party and the server did a great job managing everyone. I would go back if someone insisted, but it won't be my first choice. There are very few offerings that aren't heavily focused on meat, and the salad selection is fairly slim. I realize this isn't why you'd go here, but because I was going for a birthday gathering I was looking for something that would fit more with what I prefer eating. The beer selection is great, but overall I just had a sour taste left in my mouth because of the prices of what I picked and what I ended up ordering. Next time I go back (if I do), I'll update my review to reflect my different experience.

I've been here four times and it's just a great place. The food is always amazing and the atmosphere is very authentic German. They even sell German candies too! This is definitely one of my favorite places to eat in the area.

Lived in Germany for 3 years and since returning hadn't found a German restaurant that hits on all cylinders!!!! I had the Hawaiian Schnitzel Veal mit pommes und cucumber salat. The veal schnitzel was the right thickness and huge like every neighborhood Gasthaus. And Delicious staked on top with sliced black forest ham and gryere cheese and topped with pineapple slices. I know that's not typical, I couldn't resist because it actually lightened up the heaviness of the fried schnitzel, yummy! The pommes I would not order again, don't get me wrong, they were tastey but simply fried scalloped potatoes. However, they should jar their cucumber salat, I would go on auto ship for those! My friends raved about their meals as well, both military guys stationed in Germany as well. They had the bologna meat loaf (on steroids), the sausage plate (andouille, and kielbasa) ! We have no room for dessert. I also got a bowl of goulash to go. Looking forward to lunch tomorrow. THE PRICES WERE AMAZING!!!! THIS IS A NEW FAVORITE FOR US! I don't drink but the beer menu was taller than me, 5'7". The atmosphere is so engaging. Be prepared for a bit of a wait but do not be faint hearted, worth it!!!!

Meh...maybe I ordered the wrong menu items but I didn't think it was all that great. I met a friend for lunch and ordered the half sandwich soup combo. The soup sounded tasty, beer cheese, but it didn't live up to my expectations. It was too thick (almost velveeta like) and not very flavorful. For my half sandwich I ordered the chicken salad on toasted German rye. Now I think I made the mistake of ordering it toasted, but I could tell the chicken salad was on par for being quite flavorful just the way it should be ordered. The ambiance is cute and very German. They have a wide selection of beers which is nice for those not having to get back to work.

If you are in the mood for trying a new beer then this is a great place. Their staff seems very knowledgeable about what's on tap. They usually help me make a selection to try something new. They probably have the best beer selection in the city. I'll say probably because if not, I haven't been to that place yet. The food is ok. It's not the best German I've had, but it's the only german place I've been to in Tampa. So, I can't compare it to anything else in Tampa. You come here for the beer not the food. That doesn't mean it is gross, I just mean that their beers on tap are amazing. I recommend you try it out. The benches are pretty uncomfortable so try to get a table.

Yum! This place is super fun and the food is great. The amount of beer they have is ridiculous. Our server was knowledgeable and guided us to the perfect ipa :). Mr. O almost always gets the schnitzel Italia. It was fried perfectly and the red sauce was really good. I tried the pierogies with sour cream sauce. It was really good. Definitely pay the extra dollar for the sour cream sauce. It is mixed up with mushrooms and is perfect with the cheesy patatoey pierogies. There was even a guy playing accordion next to our table which was a trip. We always have a fun time here and the food is always fresh and well prepared.

Very nice place, feels like a neighborhood pub. I take customers for lunch here regularly, and they always love it. I'm of German descent, although I'm not that connected to the cuisine, so I really like the American flair that makes the food not so ethnic. The schnitzel is my favorite, but I stop by regularly to pick up sausages and cheese for home. The sausages are good on the grill, and I always find some new cheese surprise to try. If I drank beer, I'm sure I'd be impressed by the massive beer list. All in all, one of my regular dinner places.

Great spot I have been going to for years. Everyone time I bring a friends or family they love it! Everything from the best German food in Tampa to some seriously killer sandwiches all with very affordable. The servers are always well versed in the food and in the VAST selection of Local, US and international brews. They are impeccably clean in every way. After having eaten there well over a hundred times I can honestly say they are one of the cleanest restaurants in the area.

What a great place. My daughters have been going to school at USF for four years and RIGHT before they graduate I discover this place. Unfair! Food was great, service was great and the atmosphere was great. The only complaint is the lack of sweet iced tea.

  • James N.

A fantastic restaurant with the best beer selection around. While chain liquor stores promise a lot of beer, let's face it, it is some craft beer and a lot of mass market stuff. You won't find that here. They even have a policy "no crap on tap." The food is also awesome. Great sandwiches, schnitzel, and sausages. I would eat here everyday if I was closer.

SHORT VERSION: Sat at the bar for beers, dinner, and to watch a football game; terrible slow service. Did not ask if we wanted another beer once or how our food was. Food was cold and bland. Would never go back here again. LONG VERSION: I was in from out of town and wanted somewhere to watch the Broncos vs. Buccaneers game. My assumption was being in the city where the team resided that this would not be an issue. We phoned ahead to ask if they would be showing it here and after explaining to the lady who the 'Bucs' were she said 'sure'. We took a seat at the bar where the only HD TV was (who watches sports in Standard Def?). Before ordering we asked a second time to confim they would be playing the game. Once the game started the bartender was no where to be found to change the channel. After about 7 minutes she finally reappeared to inform us that someone else had asked for a different game to be shown. Turned out that someone else was an off the clock employee. Lovely. We moved to the other bar to watch the game on the crappy TV. Waited and waited to see a bartender. Finally saw one and got her attention to ask for a beer. The last saving grace this place could have had with me at this point was the food. It failed. It was cold when I got it, didn't taste all that great and I was never asked how it was either. SUMMARY: I would not advise trying to watch any kind of sporting event here. I don't think the food was that great so I wouldn't recommend going back to dine at a table but if you LOVE German food perhaps something other than the sour cream schnitzel (my selection) would be better.

I went with some friends to this place to celebrate a graduation. I was not impressed at all. The decorations were dated and cluttered. The server was ridiculously slow and forgot my beer causing me to miss the cheers at the table. I ordered the Rueben and it was disgusting! It was soggy and tasteless, the sauerkraut was not drained properly and the side of pomme frites was over cooked. I would not go back to this place or recommend it to anyone else. In addition the bathrooms smelled disgusting. This place is in severe need of a Bar Rescue from Jon Taffer.

    (1)
  • Keaton F.

Eh. The beer is good but over priced. The food is fine...but the pomme frites are really good. The service is generally good. The atmosphere is awful past the first visit...the novelty wears off so it's just loud and poorly lit. Parking is MISERABLE between 5:30 and 9

Great little place with a big atmosphere and a blast. It's like you walked into a totally different (German) world because the interior is so intense and amazing. Staffs are well knowledged with their beer and also super nice, all with their own personality (super plus!). I've only tried a few things off their menu but I can say its pretty darn good. Can't wait to try more. It all pairs well with drinks and that should be all you should care about! The food and drinks :D Tons of stuff on draft and also bottle. If you're looking for something expect to find it here.

  • Ben O.

"Dunder Box" is how most people say the name of this joint, not "Dunder Backs". Either way is fine, as long as you start by saying "Hey Ben, let's go to..." and finish with "...I'll buy you a beer." Vegetarians can dine as cheaply as $3.99 for a meatless Reuben, which leaves money to spend on a hot pretzel (about $2) and a pint of draft beer (generally about $6, with some *liters* around $8). Wooden chairs aching your Arsch? There are a few cushy armchairs in the "man cave" section. Got a lot of friends? There's a room with a moderately sized long table, enough for a dozen people, maybe more. Just moved to town and haven't met anyone yet? There are two bars you can belly up to. If you've got a butt, it belongs somewhere in Dunderbak's. Bonus for USF students: You can get off the Bull Runner C at Skipper Road, walk a block north to Bruce B. Downs, and across the Hess parking lot to Dunderbak's, then walk back the same way when you're going home. Check the shuttle hours, especially on weekends, but there's no need to worry about driving home safely when you can let the Bull Runner be the designated.

It's truly like being in Germany! Great liter beers, amazing food, awesome music! It's almost like its a theme restaurant it's so good. The help is very knowledgeable of all foods and beers. The authenticity of this place is great and I've been treated like gold every time I go. I seriously recommend it. The prices are a lot less then you would think also. IF I COULD GIVE THIS PLACE TEN STARS I WOULD! :D

Went early on a Saturday night, around 5:10 pm. We waited 20 minutes for a table. The place was packed the whole time we were there. Beer: Great. Had two pints of Spaten. My wife had the Bellhaven. Appetizers: Pommefrittes (fries). Shaped as potato chips, not quite crisp and very oily. And we had potato pancakes. Those of you who are Eastern European would expect more shredded potatoes than flour. They were filling but mostly flour. Main dishes: My son has been here a couple of times and orders the Schnitzel Holstein which he enjoys. My wife enjoyed the Sauerbraten. I had the Zigeuner Schnitzel (Gypsy Schnitzel). I believe, based on the definition given in the menu, the American version. Would rather have had the original paprika sauce one if I had been given a choice. I'm not sure why anyone would think the American version tastes good. Sides: more potato pancakes, fried potatoes, red cabbage, spatzle. Bottom line: Great for some beer drinking. Would pick sandwiches next time. Might go back in couple of years.

Pretty good food, great beer selection, and German atmosphere. If those are the things you are seek you will probably enjoy this place. The traditional German dishes are alright. Most of the sandwiches are really good, I like der new Yorker the best. Most apps and the potato pancakes are good. So many beer options and usually the staff is friendly and knowledgable.

Anytime someone mentions "Germany" in a sentence, I always think of this place. I would have to agree that they consistently have one of the better beer selections in the city and always provide an updated menu with their stock. I have hung out numerous times in their side bar drinking an authentic German brew while watching a soccer match on television. The food for the most part is delicious, but I did on one occasion receive a less than desirable reuben (it's life and maybe the chef was having a bad day). All in all I hope to come here for years to come.

One word - AMAZING!!! When I worked in Temple Terrace, I could NOT get enough of Mr. Dunderbak's. Living in Cincinnati for several years, I was lucky to have been exposed to excellent German food and Mr. Dunderbak's is a perfect substitute to Cincy's food. Their entire menu is EXCELLENT. They have a great selection of beers and my personal favorite drink is their root beer on tap. I usually order off the menu and from the deli and both are delicious. A little pricey depending on what is ordered, but the quality is worth it. They have a couple different eating areas and we prefer the corner bar where we can look outside. If you like German cuisine, this is the place to be! 5 stars and a must for the Temple Terrace area!!

Pros: Huge beer selection, fun atmosphere, overall good food. My sister had the wiener schnitzel which she said was great, I had the pork shank, which was pretty good but dry, wish it had been served with gravy or something. Cons: Horrible parking situation, had to park in office complex down the road, which luckily because it was after hours was not a problem. Incredibly busy and noisy inside which affected quality of service greatly. I saw people standing and waiting for the names to be taken down for tables for a long time before the hostess finally showed up. Not good.

I'm an absolute fan of German food. With that being said it is hard to get some quality schnitzel, especially in the Tampa area. Mr. Ds has remedied that issue for me. Amazing food, and because I was wanting to go big check I got the baron Von dunderbak. Huge and tasty sandwich.

German food without going halfway across the planet! Cute place, great beer, and very good German food! Can get packed and service is not as prompt as it could be! Hostess & wait staff being college kids what more can you expect! But the food & beer make up for them.

One of my favorite restaurants in Tampa! Top-notch beer selection with a knowledgable staff. My favorite items on the menu are any of the schnitzels, fried pickles, pommefrites, and their sandwiches (especially the Blue Max). A bonus is that they often have live music as well.

I won't lie, I am probably the wrong person to be doing this review. I am not very well versed in German food, but I am guessing most of you in the area are not either, so here I go. Everything is so bland, oh so bland. If it wasn't for the large selection of different sauces I don't think I would be able to eat anything off the menu. As far as the sauces go, they have a variety of different mustards which are absolutely amazing. They also offer some chocolates and German sweets which are out of this world. Beer? Yeah they have beer. That is probably the best part. Personally, I am glad they steered away from only carrying German brews, they are often too sweet, especially for an IPA lover like myself. The atmosphere is pretty cool. They have a mini stage that is centered in the restaurant and often the point of providing live music, or hosting the trivia night MC. For the USF area, it is definitely a gem, since there aren't many cool bars up in that area. Actually, this would probably be the #1 bar in that area.

Being that I lived in Germany majority of my life, I was anxious to check out how authentic this place was compared to the real deal. My first visit wasn't too great in terms of the quality. But the next time I went everything was perfect. I wanted my boyfriend and I to give the place another go. My favorite German dish is the all so amazing Jager Schnitzel. The first time I came, it was too bitter, but this time it was perfect. The schnitzel comes with two sides I chose the potato pancakes with applesauce, and the pommes frites (homestyle fries) for no more than $12. My boyfriend got the same and enjoyed it as well. It was his first time having German food so I was happy that he enjoyed it. The beer was top quality. Just like home. I went again and tried the Holstien Schnitzel which is basically a sunny side up egg on top of the schnitzel. I normally never stray from the Jager but this was also very appetizing. Everytime I have gone the place is back but I have always received my food in a timely fashion. I never had problem with service. The waiter and waitresses are great and if you have no clue what to order or what your order is, they give you great choices of the best dishes to try. One of my friends was a vegetarian and our waitress suggested the periogie and he loved it. So if you looking for some great German food in the Tampa area, Dunderbaks is the best place to be!

Good sandwiches and outstanding selection of beers. I especially like the Blue Max sandwich. Our only regret is that there is now only one location left in the area and it's a long way from where we live.

Exhaustive beer list is a great description. Any food I've ordered here has been good and the service solid. Best German pub in Tampa with authentic music and atmosphere too. Parking is a challenge due to the popularity of the place and Acropolis Greek Tavern in the same plaza.

Great stuff! Been wanting to check this place out for years since their rave reviews on Beer Advocate back when they were located in the mall. Sure enough, they have an excellent beer selection on tap and in the bottle. Bottle prices are kind of crazy-high, though. Staff was friendly, totally knowledgable about the beer, as advertised on their shirts. Extra goodies include import candies, condiments and various other fun stuff to take home. I think they may have live music here on occasion, as there were components of a PA system in the gazebo that sits in the middle of the room. The food was excellent - very delicious sandwiches and whatnot -- the whole place (as far as beer quality and selection, and excellent sandwiches, even ambience) reminds me of the excellent European Street mini-chain in Jacksonville. Thumbs up!

I can't write this review without getting incredibly hungry for their fried mushrooms. This place is more than great. The atmosphere is exactly what you expect: German biergarten with crates of candies and delicacies, endless rows of beers, and long bench tables. They even have a band that comes in and plays in the gazebo set up in the middle of the place. How's that for ambiance? The food? I have never been to Germany, so I can't comment on it's authenticity, but I CAN comment on it's yumminess. Fried mushrooms are a must here, or pommefrites if you don't like mushrooms. Their sandwiches are so fresh and filling, and the bratwurst is jam packed with flavor. You'll leave here satisfied. The beer selection is extensive and the wait staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. So if the library of beers look overwhelming, I'd absolutely recommend asking the staff. They always have great suggestions. Every time we go here, we always have a good time and leave full. The combination of a cozy, unique atmosphere, great service, and delicious food and beers is what brings me back here time and time again. So I'd certainly recommend this to anyone looking for good food and good times.

Some of the best German food I have had anywhere. Great casual, kitschy German interior. Busy for lunch. Sausages and sandwiches best items. Sauerkraut average (dry). If you want a 'Munich' moment....visit Mr. Dunderbak's......and don't forget the huge array of crafted beer and great German chocolates and grocery items. Love this place.

Outrageously good beer, great food, and super friendly people. I've been going here off and on for years, and even after moving to the West Coast and then coming back for just a quick visit, they still remember me, my beer, and my favorite sandwich. I wish I could live in this place.

We've been here twice, both times were pretty great. If you come on a Saturday night, be prepared to wait for a table. Or you can opt to sit at the bar where you'll still have full menu service (pretty cool). There was an accordion player there the last time we went (Saturday night), definitely a lot of fun. There are not a lot of vegetarian options, that said, the veggie sandwich is absolutely delightful. The BLT might have been the best BLT I've ever had, they cure the bacon at Mr. Dunderbaks itself, talk about fresh! The pepper poppers are great. The sausages of course are as well. Now on to the beer: It's like going to Beer Heaven, no joke, seriously amazing selection. PS: There is seating outdoors, but it's not romantic (strip mall), so don't sit outside if you're looking for ambiance. Two very large thumbs up from us on this place.

Come for the beer, stay for the food. Its "Americanized German" food, but its decent. Their beer selection is beyond excellent (although they need to improve on their craft ciders). The atmosphere is very charming and fun, the market has great rare items. I often drive 100 miles round trip just to drink their Hacker-Pschorr Octoberfest and eat their sourbraten.

This place is amazing, it's like you walk in and you are in Europe :) Some of the food is pricey for the amount that you get. They say their sausages are hand stuffed, I dont think that is true, just by the way they look. My bf is from Eastern Europe and he knows his meat, he says is nothing compare to the real thing. I mean the food is good dont get me wrong, those are just the only two downs. I like the atmosphere, but they do take long sometimes to make your food. The people are really nice, I really like the place, I will deff go back :)

My visit was the first time I've eaten German food. We ordered four diffeerent beers - they were great and the food was fantastic. The waiter brought out a couple small dishes of peanuts and a saurkraut to try while we waited for our order. The warm German potato salad, spaetzle, and the Saurbraten entree were my choices and I somehow cleaned my entire plate. The boyfriend ordered schnizel and he finished all of his as well. We were both very happy with the meal. The atmosphere is upbeat and the decor is everything "beer hall" related. Wooden rafters, worn tables with benches, mini kegs and crates and lots of beer plaques on the walls. The evening we went there was a couple playing live music (guitar and accordian), and among the patrons having a good time it is a bit loud, but fun. Will visit again!

Mr. Dunderbak's, I hope you're doing well -- I just wanted to write you a quick note and let you know that I think it was a great career move to escape from the clutches of University Mall and land just a few short miles away in New Tampa. I visited you a few times in the early 90s with my parents, and now frequent you whenever I'm in the neighborhood. Your beer selection is exhaustive - I'm a fan. Your food reminds me of my childhood, thanks to my German mom :). I wish you would open a 2nd location, somewhere closer to Brandon... Best Regards, Chris

Great gem of a place, even if stuck in a strip mall (I'm not from Tampa...). Their beers range from the light Kolsch style to the heavier and stronger Bavarian style, anyone could find one to suit them (with help from the waitress, who did give samples of a couple so my sister could choose.) The food was very authentic based on my experience from Germany (we all opted for the more German dishes, no American ones). The schnitzel was awesome, pick your sauce if you like one. The sausages were high quality. For a side I most recommend the potato pancakes, they were the best out of all at the table that we had (other options @ our table: the pan potatoes, sliced potatoes with a sauce, green beans, spatzel, sauerkraut - red and white.) Not that the others didn't taste great, they did, but the pancakes win! I ended the night with the fresh baked apple strudel. All I can say is mmmm, I opted to eat the whole thing. Seriously apple filled, not overdone on the dough. Worth the drive out to New Tampa.

The 4 stars I give Dunderbak's is based on the good service, courteous staff, decent beer selection (not a beer lover personally) and reasonable pricing. My wife enjoyed it more than I did. For some reason, I cannot seem to learn to enjoy German style food. That said, this should not take away from all the other Yelpers who really like this type of food. German food has a flavor that is simple but not very delicious in my opinion. Other cuisines like Japanese is also based on simplicity but somehow it is much more appealing to my taste buds. As a pickled food lover, I find the sauercraut (not sure if I spelled correctly) was too sour and lack a true fermented flavor. This is definitely a place to just chill and enjoy a brew.

All I can say about this place, is that they have a lot of our money! We had to cut back on our weekly visits before we went broke... But this is almost a second home! Great beer, atmosphere and reubens!

Mr. Dunderbak's arrived on my radar when I was researching places to go for my half German wife's birthday trip to Florida. I was sold on the extensive beer list, she was sold on the promise of authentic German food. Upon arrival we took a moment to take in the walls of beer, beer steins, food and dessert products, and that referenced wall of chocolate. The menu is thick with real, authentic German food with all the options my wife could have hoped for. I had a bratwurst plate with German potato salad, my wife had the pork schnitzel, and we split the cheese spatzle to start. All of it was excellent. Now, the beer. I asked the bartender for a suggestion on something relatively rare falling within the stout or IPA categories. He lined up a few samples for me, unexpectedly, and it allowed me to select from their extensive list of taps. Taps full of real, craft beer. All told we left happy and full amongst a pleasant group of rowdies. Wouldn't hesitate to go back again.

Mr. Dunderbaks is da Bombenstimmung!! (fantastic atmosphere)! I loved it here. Great German grub. Fantastic selection of beers, 50 on tap alone. The HB Maibock was my fave for the day.... ooooh yes. And you can order beer in Liters. mmmmmmmmmMaibock! The spicy goulash was mighty tasty, though not really all that spicy-hot. It was spicy in the sense of having multiple spices and not being bland. Definitely spicy like that. If I lived closer, I'd be a regular. Without a doubt. Why not full 5 stars? I've only been once, and I didn't get a chance to sample dessert. So read this as 4.5!

Most people I know panicked when Mr. Dunderbak's moved - mostly because they loved the dark, hole-in-the-wall feel of the University Mall location. Luckily, like some of the other reviewers have mentioned, Dunderbak's gained more room and lost none of the charm with their move to Bruce B Downs. It still gets as crowded as ever, but that's part of the charm - you cannot come here and be bothered by the number of people; you can, however, order some beer and make some new friends. The food is great - I don't think I've had a bad dish (then again, I tend to stick to about 4 dishes I really enjoy, so I can't say there isn't something awful on the menu yet). Food aside - the beer selection is amazing... even if I can never recall the name of "that one beer I had that one time that was really really good" ...so I just have a different one each time and deal with it. Aside from the beer, my favorite part of Dunderbak's is the candy. Being an Army brat, I love the fact that I can get a lot of the stuff I used to love as a kid (shout out to Kinder Eggs!). Great atmosphere, friendly staff, and lots of beer - if you don't love Dunderbak's, you've got a lot of explaining to do.

German food to me should be flavorful and hearty. Mr. Dunderbak's nails the hearty side of that request with large portions. The food however was oddly bland. The sausage, sauerkraut and potatoes all tasted ....well.... average. Throw some tasty spicy mustard on it and it was much better. My dining companion had the pork schnitzel which was a bit more flavorful although VERY greasy. The potato pancakes were the one stand out with an awesome nutmeggy taste. Perhaps this place is better if you order some beer (crazy selection!) - we did try the draft root beer which was flat but tasty. Prices are decent for the serving sizes and the service was average for a college area establishment. We were a bit disappointed by candies and cookies for sale by the deli. Everything was stale or rock hard that we got. I guess they don't change them out that often.

This is my husband and my favorite restaurant! You can not go wrong with anything that you order off the menu! They have a huge beer selection and truly authentic German food! The staff is very knowleable about the beer list and always willing to let you sample before you order! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!

Smoked sausage had such an amazing flavor, in addition the various mustards was a tasty combination . Beer mocha stout was dark, creamy , rich . Paired nicely with the sausage. Potato pancakes were good only a slight to moist and greasy. The sour cream schnitzel was delicious. I love the crispy breading of the veal. The spatzle was bland and not worth mentioning. The potato pancakes Dipped in sour cream or applesauce is the best combination. The apple strudel capped off the meal. It was warm, comforting, and I loved the nutty flavor.

When Anne and I checked out Mr. Dunderbak's on Saturday, we found that it more than lived up to expectations. Owned by J.B. and Chris Ellis, Mr. Dunderbak's is styled after a classic German Biergarten. There's something for everyone here, from the German inspired cuisine to a huge selection of beer and wine. In fact, there's 54 beers on tap and another 400 or so in bottles! Off the main Biergarten, there's two bar areas and a beer mall, where patrons can enjoy dining and sample a wide variety of beers that are also available for purchase. The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable about beer. There's a nice mix to the crowd as well, with the brewpub not far from the campus of USF. We started with a delicious meat and cheese plate, and I ordered a pint of De Koninck Winterkoninck (Brouwerij De Koninck NV; Antwerpen, Belgium; Belgian Dark Ale; ABV: 6.5). Deep amber in color, Winterkoninck has notes of sweet caramel malt and toffee complimented by Belgian yeast and a hint of spices such as nutmeg on the back end. Its sweet malty influence paired well with the appetizer. For lunch, Anne ordered a chef salad while I went with the scrumptious veal schnitzel sandwich. On a recommendation from one of the bar staff, I went with a pint of St. Feuillien Cuvée de Noël (Brasserie St. Feuillien; Le Roeulx, Belgium; Belgian Strong Dark Ale; ABV: 9.0). Mahogany in color, Cuvée de Noël has rich notes of caramel and roasted malt balanced by an array of spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg. This velvety winter ale has a nutty feel to it, and is considerably more spicy than Winterkoninck. For dessert, we shared an incredible Black Forest torte (the desserts and other food items are available in their deli), and Anne ordered a bottle of her favorite beer, the incomparable Verhaeghe Duchesse De Bourgogne. I spotted a bottle that intrigued me, and was glad to give it a try. Traquair 2020 (Traquair House Brewery Lld; Peeblesshire, Scotland (UK); Barley Wine; ABV: 10.0), was brewed in a limited release of 9600 bottles to honor the first decade of the 21st century, and to be consumed before the end of the second decade. This ale is nothing short of outstanding, and takes its place among my favorite all-time barley wines. All in all, we had a great experience at Mr. Dunderbak's. billysbeerblog.com/2011/…

I have been here four times since May 2011 and the service is great, food delicious and generous, and beer top notch. The environment is pretty cozy and cleaner than the normal pub. I love the Leifman's on tap, raspberry beer. There is a great assortment of international food items to pick up for gift baskets.

Good place if you like German food and German beer. They are famous for their sandwiches, which are really good. Other food is OK. Mr. Dunderbak's has a huge beer selection on tap and even more in bottles. Mostly European lagers and dark beer.

I've already reviewed Mr. Dunderbak's University Mall location, and since this new location is just a revamped version of the older one, with the same owner/staff/etc, I'll let that other review speak for itself and let this be an update. So, the new place...THUMBS UP! Whereas the old Dunderbak's was a cramped, long, shotgun-style bar, with awkward seating, the new place is expansive and comfortable, without losing one bit of the charm and bustling excitement of the original location. The bar is now split between three rooms--really one large square beer hall with two smaller annexes on each side. One annex is a darker, more intimate bar, with full beer and food service. The other annex is lined with picnic style seating, typical of a traditional beer hall and only serves beer. I'd image the olde-school beer hall side would be a blast with a bunch of friends and some Hofbrau in a stein! Because there isn't smoking inside, the interior is immaculate, while still retaining that "baskets hanging from the ceiling, knickknacks on the shelves" charm. Table service is brisk and the staff really tries to remember what you like to drink so they can help you try new things, if you want. The food menu is the same. I can't comment too much on the german specialties because I stick to the same things over and over again (pomme frites). From what I hear from others, the kitchen is consistent. I would totally give the place five stars, except for two small things. For one, the lack of parking spots every time I visit is becoming a bit of a deterrent (they share the parking lot with a ton of business, number one being the New Tampa Acropolis, which is also always packed). The second issue is the unfinished feel of some of the corners of the building. I sat at the end of the bar in the more intimate room, looked to my right and saw a pile of boxes and a dismantled barstool staring at me. After a few pints, my friends started waving the barstool parts around. Errr...not optimal. But, those piddly things aside: if you like beer or german food, get to Dunderbak's at least once. I personally hate driving to New Tampa or the USF area, but I make a big exception for a trip to Mr. Dunderbak's. That should say something.

Mr. Dunderbak's is one of the best restaurants around for the faux German experience and casual food, plus a decent place to buy imported German groceries and wine. The sandwiches here are top-notch and definitely the best choices on the menu. Pick one... you can't go wrong. The pierogies are noteworthy, as are the fried pickles. Their soft pretzels are pretty average, whether you choose the American or German style, but ask for a selection of mustards to go with it and it will turn into a taste sensation. Any fan of mustards would be thrilled at the variety and styles, with spicy jalapeño standing as my favorite, followed by cranberry. Aside from the sandwiches and appetizers, any sensible person comes here for the beer. They have a massive selection for a place of their size and most are pretty reasonably priced compared to places like The Brass Tap. Mr. Dunderbak's is usually pretty crowded and almost always loud, so this isn't the place for you if you like to enjoy your meal in peace and quiet.

There's not much to do in Tampa. Mr. Dunderbak's a great place to hit up if you happen to be spending some time in Tampa. Mr. Dunderbak's has a variety of delicious brews on tap and an adequate food menu. Additionally, there's a wall of chocolate close to the counter. While I appreciated the variety of craft brews, one of my favorite beers was not up to par the day I ordered it. The Brooklyn Brewery Cuvee de Cardoz was not carbonated correctly. It could have happened for a variety of reasons (keg tapped too long, bad keg to begin with, or under carbonated at the Brewery), which is not to be blamed on Mr. Dunderbak's. I also ordered the lox (smoked salmon with cream cheese on a bagel), which was just okay. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't wonderful. It was just okay. The hot German potato salad was also a little more sour and soupy than I would have preferred. The Matterhorn on the other hand was quite tasty and rather large for the price. Piled high with meat on a toasty bread, it is perfect for soaking up heavy beers. Despite the semi-flat beer, I really like this place. Five stars for the beer variety and big sammiches!

Another unexpected find via the good folks Yelp -- decided to try this place and was not disappointed. When we walked in, I was very surprise to see a real German restaurant located in a strip center off the beaten path. The server was incredibility knowledgable of the German beers and after quizzing us on our preferences, he came back with 6 samples - we quickly settled in on an awesome German beer that had a sleight smoky toffee coffee flavor that was awesome. Wish I could remember the name of the beer cause it was great. We then decided to split a house specialty sandwich along with a meat and cheese try. As we were finishing up our meal, the college kids stated showing up for what could be described a place to drink beer with friends. All in all, a great place for German beer and food.

God I wish we had this place in Atlanta - ate here again this past weekend while in FL and it is just awesome. Great German sausages - they have a deli too so I always buy about $50 worth of take home and throw them in the freezer. If you want GREAT German food and are in the Tampa area, check this place out.

I didn't have high expectations for German food in Tampa, but this place was a pleasant surprise. We went on a Friday night, and it was packed, but we got a table and our food quickly. Our server was friendly and helpful. The portions are HUGE and very reasonably priced, so expect to bring home a lot of leftovers. The just-salty-enough sauerkraut and homemade potato salad were excellent, and my companions' meat dishes (goulash and marinated roast) smelled amazing. I especially love the little grocery area, where you can buy imported German foods (and other European products) not readily available in FL supermarkets.

I passed by Mr Dunderbaks many times before FINALLY deciding to stop! When I finally did, I was surprised by the fact that it looked more like a little market than a restaurant. We had some of the food (sandwiches were fantastic!) and the cheese and meat platter, along with some of the many draft beers they had on tap. We would highly recommend any of the super tall sandwiches, but the cheese/meat plate was mediocre at best. The draft beer provided great accompaniment to the sandwiches and they had a really good selection. We continue to come back and recommend to anyone who likes draft beer!

Just went there last night for the first time with group of 6 friends to celebrate a Birthday. We had a great time, service was great & food was great too! Everyone liked their food with the exception of the side of Spatzel, which everyone thought was bland comparative to my German Friend's taste. We all ordered different entrees and all liked them, so that kinda shows you that this place is doing something right!

ANY where you can get a beer in a liter.. I am already a fan! Add in some fried pickles, beer cheese and potato/ham/cheese yummy-ness and I am all in! We ended up here by mistake, the place we were planning on going had horrible service, so we left and walked down the street to Mr. Dunderbak's. The service was fast and very helpful with explaining all the crazy German names. They have a vast and amazing selection of beer on tap, not to mention awesome food. We sat in the bar to people watch and see the rest of the college football games on the flat screen. Would we come back?... is the Pope Catholic???? There lies the answer my friends!

Back when the University of South Florida held philosophy lectures in the movie theaters of University Mall, Mr. Dunderbak's was the secret hiding place for those of us who require great beer and cigarettes (banned now, for sure) in order to study. If a half-pound jagdwurst sandwich with cream cheese on rye is your thing, they carry an impressive selection of deli meats and cheeses of varying freshness. Ask a server or the deli attendant what's best, and don't hesitate to look skeptical. By the way, Dunderbak's skews traditional German-- very traditional. Even vegetarians who eat cheese might want to grab lunch elsewhere and come for the beer. Everyone's here for the beer. The spaetzle should be avoided at all costs. Besides the beer, the grocery can be a big deal if it's well-stocked that day. You should probably not leave without at least one of the following: six or eight kinds of popular German chocolates (they have Ueberraschungseier!), marzipan fruits, and a large bag of Lebkuchen. WARNING: Do not allow classmates, co-workers, or significant others to goad you into a high-proof beer drinking contest here. That floor is very much harder than your skull and besides- you gotta get to class.

Since its move to its new location it seems more impressive, but sadly has lost a small bit of its 'hole in the wall' charm it used to have. The usually helpful staff is now spread thin and stressed out. Prices are a little high on everything, so it makes it hard to be a weekly stop. None the less its a fun experience when its not too crowded.

Wow, what an awesome place! One of my husband's coworkers has been nagging us forEVER to come here, and when the company boss showed up in town last week and wanted to take everyone and their wives out to dinner, we finally decided to take the recommendation. We're so glad we did! The service was really great. Our server was Clayton, and he was extremely friendly and patient with everyone while we poured over the beer menu. The manager stopped by twice to make sure everyone was having a good time, something we were really impressed with; both times he was very friendly and seemed genuinely interested in knowing how we liked everything. Usually managers in other restaurants pop in for about two seconds with a short "Everything okay? Great!" before they vanish. Another thing we enjoyed was that we happened to show up on what was apparently open mic night. (Tuesday.) It was just a really cool atmosphere, and we were amazed how many people showed up with instruments waiting to play. Dinner AND free surprise music is about as good as it gets. The only downside is that the chicken portion of my chicken sandwich was about as dry as it could possibly be without being wood. My fault for ordering a grilled chicken sandwich (Chicken a la Dunderbaks, I think) in a German place, I suppose, where everything else on the menu is various sausages and such, but it was still disappointing, and I didn't eat it. It was too difficult to chew and swallow. I didn't comment on it, though, because everyone else was having such a good time and RAVING about their food. (We were a party of nine.) I had a taste of several other dishes people ordered and everything else seemed amazing. I'm actually writing this review right now because my husband called from work and asked if I'd bring him one of their Schnitzel sandwiches for lunch. They've made fans out of us, and we'll definitely be back more than once!

This place will rate higher for rowdies and craft beer lovers. Upon entering, you get the feel of being in a German rathskeller, dark, snug, and full of beer paraphernalia. I felt a little "Cracker Barrel-ish". The waiters worked quickly but were oblivious to individual needs. The menu is fabulous for the cheapskate and the full dinner guest. I enjoyed Czech kolaches (2 sweet rolls w/polish sausage, $5). Loved seeing German pretzel, $2 on the menu. Authentic German dinners run about $13, sandwiches run about $7 and are quite meaty though not so German. If you're not there for 50+ kinds of bier, you settle for Pepsi products, German clubwine, hot tea or a great German draft root beer. This place is a great party place but a noisy "date night".

Not a beer drinker - or any alcohol for that matter - so not impressed by their extensive beer selection. But if that's your poison, you'll love that about here. The food is decent. I've eaten here twice. First had the turkey Ruben. It was good. But not so spectacular that I wanted to go back for that. On this last visit, I tried the pierogues. Yum Oh! Now those I want to go back for. My one complaint about them is more, please. You only get five. I left still pretty hungry. It does come with grilled peppers and onions but they were a little too raw for my liking. So I'd ask next time to grill them much longer. Maybe that will help with the hunger. I also find their prices a little high. If you get an app, meal, dessert, and drink, it's not cheap - and possibly not worth the cost if money is tight. They do have a nice selection of gift items for purchase like wines, candies, cookies, chocolates, etc. I looked at everything and was impressed but the selection - until I picked up some of my favorite Germany cookies and saw that the Best By date was from last year. Guessing those food/gift items are very secondary to their restaurant business so not much turnover of product. Shame because I really love those cookies.

I love this place! I drive a 70 mile round trip to go here sometimes. So many beers! Live music from what could be authentic Germans. The schnitzel is great! Last time, I had it American style (with tomatoes peppers and onions) and it was really great! The pretzel app with hot mustard is great, and the red cabbage is phenomenal. It's a fun place to go, with th eadded bonus of having really good food!

Jagerschnitzel is DELICIOUS! I believe when they limit the menu at night to apps and sandwiches, you can get the schnitzel sandwich with the Jagerschnitzel sauce to recreate the deliciousness. Ask first though, don't just start ordering people around.

My first time trying German food and was pleasantly surprised! The sour cream schnitzel was cooked to perfection - crispy but moist as it should be. The potato pancakes and warm potato salad really are spectacular. Others in my party got the Ruben and New Yorker and both were excellent.

This review is concerned with the new Mr. Dunderbak's location at Bruce B. Down's next to the Hess gas station. I never liked Dunderbak's much when it was still inside the University Mall. This new location is much more appealing. We went there for a few happy hours on Fridays, and it was a lot of fun. The beers are fresh and the crowd is friendly. Lots of USF students and staff, a variety of Tampa Palms sophistos, but also the occasional redneck. This makes for a nice mix during happy hour. The food is so so, but the fried green beans make for good beer food. What is missing is a large outdoor seating area similar to the Acropolis restaurant in the same strip mall. The way it is now this is definitely no beer garden! It is a bar+restaurant. Another issue is the dreadful music that is being played in this place. It is either sad German folk music presented live by a sad harmonica player, or similar stuff piped through the poor sound system. If it has to be German music, why not give Kraftwerk a try for a change!! Happier (or at least more contemporary) music would make this a much more enjoyable place! Also, I could not help noticing the run down condition of many of the ancient looking bar seats. Give them some new foam, Mr. Dunderbak! My behind hurt after a few hours of focused drinking! That is not how it is supposed to be! In summary: Go there for happy hour (actually, happy hour ends at 6 pm, so it is useless for most people holding down a job!), stay away from the food if you can, and ignore the music. But the beer is excellent! Prost!

I finally got a chance to visit Mr. Dunderbak's last night (heard a lot about it from family and friends). I have to say I was very disappointed in the meal that I had. I ordered the jagerschnitzel, the meat was very bland and I could count the number of mushrooms on one hand in the sauce. I lived in Germany for 4 years and I guess I'm spoiled but the jagerschnitzel I'm used to is heaped with mushrooms. The sauce and the mushrooms on my schnitzel tasted and looked as if it came out of a can. Can't say for sure if it was or not, but the mushrooms looked liked pre-sliced out of a can. The potato pancakes were cold (had been sitting for sometime) and they were also bland, and the spaetzel was also cold. The beer selection however was outstanding. Next time I go I will order some of their wursts to see how they are for comparison. I am a huge German food fan and maybe I was expecting it to be just like it was back in Germany. All-in-all, I give it 2-stars, have certainly had much better jagerschnitzel, much much better. Atmosphere was nice and the service was good however.

I love this place. Great place to drink (right there in the mall). They have a very fine beer selection. Beers like North Coast Old Rasputin and St Bernardus 12 on tap! Great bottles too (Celebrator, Aventinus, etc.). And the food is pretty decent too. Neat store with good quality German products. The bartenders would give me free beer all the time for no apparent reason. Excellent all around! The best thing in the otherwise horrible University Mall.

This place was a recent discovery for me and I absolutely love it. The decor inside is cozy and the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about the beers they have to offer. Also, the beer choice is extensive enough to satisfy anyone from the stalwart stout sipper to the fruit beer afficionado. Although I am not entirely too fond of the food (It seems as if German food tends to lean a bit on the salty side for me) I typically get the Bratkartoffeln with cheese (aka Those square potato things with cheese on top, since I don't even want to attempt to verbally murder that word by attempting to pronounce it.) That, with a couple beers always hits just the right spot for me. One last part about this place that makes me love it is that you can buy beer (to take home) from there! They have a pretty decent variety of beers there to choose from and even some German food stuffs in their little shop. All in all, great place to grab a beer with a few friends. Definitely check it out!

I love this place! I knew I adore this place when I walked in the door and immediately felt like I've stepped in a different country (Germany). And then I knew I was IN LOVE when I saw that they had curry ketchup!! The first time I've had curry ketchup was in Gainesville and I reminisce about it from time to time. Now the reasons why you need to come to Dunderbak and need to ALWAYS order: 1. Beer! (I think there's like over 50 different kinds! and the staff are very knowledgeable) 2. Pommefrittes (potato fries shaped like chips) 3. AND of course: curry ketchup with the pommefrittes! Once I start on the pommefrittes, I can't stop...It's that serious! All of their sandwiches are great too, however I don't always get an entree, because most of the time, I've just there enjoying my German beer with friends and plus the pommefrittes is a pretty huge order already. I haven't tried any other entree except sandwiches, but I'm sure it's just as awesome! It's one of my favorite hangouts! I just wish I lived closer....

My husband is German, so when he gets a hankering for real German schnitzel and potato salad, Dunderbak's is the place to go! They have an exceptional selection of beers. They have entertainment and the atmosphere is always so lively and fun. Their Jager gravy is the best thing I've ever tasted, and I'm not joking. They have phenomenal potato latkes with real applesauce. We've never had a bad meal here, though be ready for a wait. They are dealing with limited space in a busy area. The parking is especially bad so be ready for that as well. It's worth it, though.

I was in the mood for German food in Tampa and turned to Yelp for a suggestion. Overall, I was impressed. Not the best German restaurant I've ever been to, but not the worst either. I really enjoyed the casual atmosphere and great beer selection. If you're into beer, this is the place to go! My husband and I started with a German pretzel, which was served hot with several yummy mustard options (my pick was the sweet clover honey). I got the sausage platter with bratwurst and kielbasa and a side of sauerkraut and german potato salad. Everything was served fast and was delicious. I wish the sauerkraut automatically came with the sausage platter and didn't count as a side, but besides that it was great. We'll be back the next time we're in the mood for German.

Great place for good german food. I have lived in Germany and miss the food, so this place is definitely the closest i can get. They carry a very wide variety of German and European beer as well as local. But, c'mon, do you really want a Bud light at a German biergarten??? Great beer, atmosphere and schnitzel. They also carry German products and candies available for sale...LOVE curry ketchup! The place does get crowded on the weekends, so be patient, it's worth it

If you are looking for authentic German food (and that's hard to find anywhere), this is the place. The menu looked good and everything we ordered was huge in terms of portions. We were very pleased and like the beer selection as well. What topped it all off was the guy on the accordion singing.

An outstanding place! Food was incredible, beer selections amazing and service outstanding. This place is so good that when we sat down other customers started making recommendations. What a lucky find for us! We will come back tomorrow. Can't say enough great things about this place.

If you love German food and/or beer, you'll LOVE this place. I've been three times in the past month and everything I've ordered is delish. The first two times I stuck with the traditional Brat. It is so good and I was scared to venture out. I'm glad I did, I've also had the leberkase (yummy veal meatloaf goodness) and the sauerbraten (vinegary pot roast that is fork tender). I am also glad that each time I go, the people I am with order the schnitzel so I get get my fix for that as well! Their beer selection is amazing (not as good as WOB but who is around here?) and I cannot wait for the next time I can go back and try something new.

If you like beer, head here! Knowledgeable and friendly staff, never intimidating. They will help you find your style of beer. It can be overwhelming if you're not a hop head, but they never make you feel inferior if you don't know. They will ask what you usually drink and find something that suits your pallet. Their food is very traditional German. I am a German and Irish girl and they make things that I know and love. Again, you may not know what is in Schnitzel Holstein (veal or pork cutlet with a fried egg on top), but they will explain away. All of my friends who are too intimidated get sandwiches, which are also extremely delicious. Anything with the garlic cream cheese spread is always on point. I must recommend the pretzel with champagne walnut cheese as an appetizer. You will not be disappointed. On the weekends they also feature German specialties like Schweinhaxen (an enormous pork shank for 2) and Gulasch. Both worth a shot...trust me. You can select 2 different sides. I must sway you towards potato pancakes, but they potato salads are also fantastic. As a McNazi, I may be a shame to my heritage by not liking cabbage, but all of my friends absolutely die for it here (kraut, slaw, or red cabbage). All of their sausages are great as well. They give you an endless choice of mustards as condiments as well. I definitely love the sweet hot, but have tried the jalapeno, wasabi, deli, horseradish, cranberry, and spicy brown as well. I'm usually too full (due to beer) for dessert, but we came here for my birthday 2 years ago, and the apple strudel ala mode was great. Stop in and give it a shot...trust me, you'll be back (hey, he's Austrian, not German so it's not that tongue in cheek).

Runner-up for best German food in town, but really they focus more on the beers & other brews. Great selection on draft, bottle and six-packs or more to take home with an emphasis on German, Belgian and other imports. Large & sometimes noisy, with long biergarten-like tables that make them ideal for a bunch of drinkers. Lots of German art, artifacts and kitch. The newish location on Bruce B. Downs is much more spacious than the skinny corridor they had at University Mall. But they still have a wide selection of German/Euro candies, mustards, other specialty food and gift items. Good variety of schnitzels, wursts, and other classic German dishes. I enjoyed their Jaegerschnitzel and cabbage/spaetzle sides. Others in my party were also pleased and we all took food home. Were fortunate to get there early on a busy October evening when we and others were using Goupon coupons, and the beer-making club was meeting & drinking. By the time we left, there was a long waiting line and sparse parking. So time your gemuchlikeit fix.

Probably one of the best German restaurants I've ever been to. The food is fantastic, the beer selection is excellent, and the service is always fast and friendly. I highly recommend the latkes, and their liverwurst is top notch although I wish they offered a braunschweiger appetizer. The prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is casual. One trip and you will see why this is a regular lunch spot for me.

I have been passing by this restaurant for years and finally got the chance to stop in for dinner with friends. What a great establishment! The interior of the restaurant was nicely decorated, creating a warm and cozy atmosphere, and as others have stated, there are German goods available for purchase. It was fun just looking around and seeing all of the different items along the walls. The best part was the live music being played by a man in the gondola in the middle of the restaurant! I can't judge when it comes to authenticity, but the food here tasted absolutely amazing! My group split an order of Pomme Frites to start, and the texture of these potatoes was one that I had never encountered before. The edges were crispy while the inside was chewy... Definitely something to give a try, especially if you're a fan of potatoes! They weren't too salty, and the curry ketchup that came with definitely spiced them up. For my entree, I ordered the pork Jagerschnitzel with sides of Spaetzle and the Potato Pancakes. The Jagerschnitzel was very tasty, with nice and tender meat covered in a crispy coating. All of this was smothered with the gravy, which was robust and flavorful. I'm not usually a fan of mushrooms, but the thick slices on top of the pork drenched in the sauce were actually essential to the dish and were the best part when paired with each bite. For the sides, I didn't care for the Spaetzle, but the Potato Pancakes were the standout part of the whole meal. The Potato Pancakes were dense, a little more flour than potato, and when paired with the fresh and slightly sweet applesauce, they made the perfect match. The meal was completed with a slice of German Chocolate Cake, which was a sweet treat and good way to end the meal. Rather than the usual buttercream frosting, the chocolate cake was paired with a nut and coconut paste-type filling, making it less heavy. I also want to give a shout out to the service here. We had a welcoming and kind server who was very prompt and always willing to be as helpful as possible. Asked about the curry ketchup for the Pomme Frites? He brings three different kinds. Asked for some applesauce and sour cream to come with the side of Potato Pancakes? No problem. Splitting the cost four ways for the appetizer, three ways for the cake, and adding it to separate entree bills? More than happy to, done with ease, without mixing anything up. Two words: completely impressed.

Even better than expected. The spinach bacon bites are not to be missed. Fabulous schnitzel- crispy not greasy, moist not dry. Potato pancakes and red cabbage are great. Loved the sausages and German potato salad. Bring your appetite and sweater (air conditioning is chilly) Great for kids!

The food is great as is the service. Or if u just want to go for one of their many choices of beers, you can do that too. Good live entertainment and the place is very clean.

Dear Cristina, Please don't be alarmed when you read this Yelp review and find out that I took our 8 month-old son to Mr. Dunderbak's while you were blueberry picking with Nora. There were extenuating circumstances. First, I was very hungry after babysitting all day while they were working on our car. Second, I have never been to Mr. D's, not even when it was located in University Mall. I used to take our daughter for stroller walks in the mall when it was hot outside and I would peek in the dark, mysterious joint, but never actually sat down. Third, Mexico was playing Argentina in the World Cup and although I do not know anything about soccer, I was seriously struck by the urge to spend some quality time with my son, surrounded by people who were watching the game. Also, it was raining. But really, it is not as bad as it sounds. For one thing, there were lots kids around Mr. D's, including what appeared to be a two month-old and several 8 to 10 year-old kids. Second, the place is smoke free. Also, the staff had no problem grabbing a highchair from the stack near the door, so it is not like having babies and toddlers is unusual for them. In fact, none of the staff seemed surprised at all while we were there. The place is not huge. When you walk in there is a room with a bar on the right, another room with with a GIANT projection TV and tables on the left. The main room has a bar on the right, a gazebo like area in the middle and some Oktoberfest-like tables on the left. Of course, there are tons of inviting bottles stacked all around. You know that I like beer, so I don't need to go into that. I couldn't see the selection list perfectly well, but it was extensive. I tried to order a pint of apricot wheat ale , but was told that they were out and had nectarine wheat ale instead. Of course, your remember from when we used to brew beer (before we had kids) how hard it is to get the fruit right. I was concerned about it being too sweet, but ordered it anyway. It really was good. Armed with toys and coasters to occupy my co-pilot, I spent some time studying the menu. I'm certain the sandwiches are awesome, but I figured that I should get something really German. I ordered the Jagerschnitzel, which is, of course, wiener schnitzel covered with a tasty onion and mushroom gravy. I got a side of green beans and sauerkraut. It was as flavorful as it sounds. I manged to eat about half, while feeding and entertaining the little one. Anyway, now you see that the whole experience was quite reasonable. I don't think there is any need to be concerned about our little father-son trip. There is a decent chance that you may not even find out, because I'm not going to post this review to Facebook and I carefully hid the leftovers under some salad and carrots in the fridge.I can't wait to eat them! Love you! -Nate

Wanted to experience food German style and found the right place! Ordered the potato pancakes with applesauce which was AMAZING! The Jagerschnitzel was yummy fried to a crispy brown covered in brown mushroom gravy. The side items green beans and corn were alright nothing to right home about. The best thing had to be the beer selection and the knowledge of the server. Will definitely be back!

First time trying German Food so I can't call myself an expert. Sampled some things here and there from my friends plate and ultimately decided not to order my own plate of food after not being impressed, but was more or less not pleased with neither their Beer Battered Onion Rings or their Root Beer from the tap (tasted just like an IBC root beer and the same price really). Since I have never eaten German food before I don't think it's fair for me to be very judgmental of their dishes though so take this as my best attempt. The waitress was really friendly and helpful, trying her best to help out clueless me and my other friend...with only one German expert in our party so I give her props for that. I'll come back someday and since I haven't tried their beer I'm missing out on what everyone else loves here. Someday Mr. Dunderbak. Someday. Oh and the atmosphere was really nice. I felt like I left Tampa for a minute. I really liked that about Mr. Dunderbak's.

I wish I could eat here more. The food has an aurora that gives you the feeling that you are in Germany. I am a big fan of their schnitzel! It reminds me so much of my trip to Munich in college. Then there is the beer, the list is always changing and they have a vast selection t choose from. I would never order the same beer twice because I am afraid I might miss out on my new favorite!

Food is good and service is quick. This is authentic German food at its best. They have a bunch if sauces at the deli you can request. Make sure you try them all to find the one you like.

I LOVE this place. Went for the first time this past Friday to meet up with a couple of friends to talk business. The beer selections are insane. I had some beer that they considered a dessert beer. I wanted to bathe in it... Wash my hair in it and always smell it... It tasted just as delicious. I also had a tuna salad which was also superb,. Yes I know.... Kinda odd going to a German place and not getting something more German, but I'm a vegetarian (with pescetarian tendencies) so thankfully they had this deliciousness to indulge in. The only downfall was the guy singing. It wasnt horrible, just loud. We were there to talk, not have a sing along :D

Pretty much my favorite place to eat and drink in all of Tampa Bay. Great German food (even brought some Germans here and they loved it) and great beers. Food is reasonably priced, I usually can spend around $30 for two including a drink each. If you love beer, this is like beer Nirvana; there's always around 30-40 beers on tap and hundreds in bottles. They are constantly rotating their beers so there's always something new to try! On the weekends, they have Accordion Joe playing live music, which really sets the atmosphere. The only downside is the parking, which is limited because it's a small lot with several large restaurants. They also don't take reservations but it's usually worth the wait! We've been coming here for years and all of the employees are amazing. I think we've only ever been disappointed here once.

Like Brett N. I have a German Food obsession. Combine that with my beer obsession and it's a wonder I haven't moved into the neighborhood near Dunerbak's. I've come to love just about everything this place offers. I'll admit, I go for the beer. The German offerings from the bar, as well as what you can buy to take home, are the best Deutschland has to offer. But with all good drinking comes hunger, and Dunderbak's has amazing food too. I love the sausage plate, and have tried many of their Schnitzels. We always get a large pretzel and the Cordon Bleu bites for an appetizer that help with the first round of beers. The setting is a fun place to go and our 6 year old even loves it. Dunderbak's would easily be 5 stars if I didn't have the same 2 problems every time I go there. The parking and the hostess. Parking at this place is a NIGHTMARE!! It's a strip mall and every shop feels the need to put a "dont' park here" sign out. And the alternatives are few and far away. Plus, the last couple times the hostess has screwed up the wait list, keeping tables in order, etc. But, good food and beer comes with some challenges!

I was very excited to try this place since I used to live in Germany. The deli/store had great German goodies. The Dunkel on tap was cold and refreshing. I loved the long picnic tables- reminded me of a German beer hall. The spatzle was hard and dry, like it was made yesterday and pan fried or microwaved. The jäger sauce was too thick and brown, lacking the color, consistency and flavor I expected. I would go back since I love German beer, but not to eat dinner. I will stick with the beer and try a pretzel. They do have Curry ketchup, so maybe I will try a curry wurst.

Stopped here for happy hour, made it into dinner. Extensive beer selection, nice large 1 liter mugs draft $8. Enjoyed the atmosphere, beer and food. Had the schnitzel reuben sandwich, which was awesome and huge. I couldn't finish it! I met a friend with German heritage - he said the German quality was spot on traditional, which is saying something. I would have given 5 stars except the seating we had was a tiny wobbly table with uncomfortable chairs. They have long bench tackles, German style, I will insist on sitting there next time.

I wish I would have known about Dunderbaks when I went to usf and lived right by it! One of the best atmospheres for any restaurant. Go on Friday or Saturday nights to hear Accordion Joe play! They have a huge selection of beers, but I go for the food. The potato pancakes are amazing. Having just those with homemade apple sauce and sour cream is perfect. They also have a great sausage and schnitzel selection. This place is amazing!

My first review update comes with good reason, and that's because they got rid of the terribad musical act! This makes Dunders far more tolerable than it was previously, and actually a great place to have a brew and a bite! The advantage of the bierhaus-style tables means it's great for groups as well, and you can hear multiple conversations and jump back and forth between them. Plus they have every kind of mustard on the planet, so if that's your thing you'll be able to try all of them. The crowd is everything from USF grad students to hipsters of both variety (ironic and non-ironic). But get there earlier if you want something more than a sandwich, as they shut a bunch of the kitchen down at 10pm, thus meaning you can't get your schnitzel fix after that hour. A pretty authentic kind of place that's beloved by it's loyal customers... and now I'm a much bigger fan than I was before!

Amazing! German food is now my favorite. Had the Italian schnitzel and I'm not sure if I can ever try anything else. The red tomato sauce is perfectly sweet and savory. My waiter was new and was very patient with me when I was trying to figure it's

This place is truly wondrous. If you like German anything, you will find it here! Beer beer beer. There are so many options that you might need to try them all, which they do have little taster shot glasses that you can try before you do buy your pint or boot ;). One of my favorite beers or halfbeer so to speak is this grapefruit beer. It is basically half grapefruit soda and beer. You need to try it. No more questions, put it in your mouth. Also if you are looking to challenge your friends to some drinking or just plan on getting knocked out drunk, I recommend asking about das boot! It holds about 2-3 liters and is around $20! It's a good buy! Der bleu max. A corned beef and pastrami sandwich with a bleu cheese dressing in the middle on a pumpernickel bread. This is by far the best sandwich I have ever had in the world, and I've been some places. I have had some other options in food here, but I seem to keep coming back to this. Great place to come if you are in the USF area and looking for a good drinking place to come hang out at.

Awesome food! I've been here several times and love their beer selection and wide variety of snacks/entrees. I especially recommend their jäger schnitzel, potato pancakes, and veggie delight sandwich. I was most impressed with their veggie delight tonight, as I even got sprigs of fresh thyme! If you're feeling especially daring, the Dunderbomb sandwich has everything and the kitchen sink slammed between two pieces of bread. I'd recommend it for personal victory days with friends. In terms of beer, they have the largest list of European drafts in the area. They also let you sample before you decide. I can't think of any real negatives. Their beer menu can be a bit confusing sometimes, but that's just due to their frequently rotating diversity of drafts.

I've been to this place a few times with mixed reviews. I think because I spent so much time in Germany, I tend to expect it to be authentic. It is as authentic as it can get in New Tampa and the menu is pretty good. There is also a vast array of authentic German beer that it rather pricey, but well worth it if you want a taste of Germany. As for some of the groceries, they are a bit overpriced and some are available at The Aldi supermarket down the road. Overall I enjoy the setting and it is cool little German place to dine at. Will be back. If you want real German food prepared by a German, I recommend "Taste of Berlin" in Brandon.

A unique experience. Lots of cool items from Germany to look at and purchase. Beer selection is interesting and has a lot of new choices all the time. Food is usually pretty good. Wiener schnitzel is good. Nice sandwich selection. Seating can definitely be an issue during peak times. Not crazy about community tables with picnic style benches. But there are other standard table and chair options.

I stopped in not knowing a thing about beers and left with a new found sense of respect for the drink. The bartender was really helpful and let me sample at least 10 drinks before we found the right one. He joked with me about being a basic 21 year old ( I tried to order guiness) and was genuinely committed to furthering my brew knowledge. With that kind of service I'll definitely be coming back.

Took my family here after the movies based on a recommendation. Now it's my stepson's favorite go to place. (he always asks to go out for sushi) The jagerschnitzel is the best. Pork or veal cutlet with gravy. It is melt in your mouth good. The warm German potato salad is the best I ever hand and they have a great selection of German and domestic beer.

  • John S.

Great place to grab a great beer and excellent German food. It's "cozy" so it can get full quickly on a Friday or Saturday night. The staff is very friendly. The beer selection on draft is extensive and selection in bottles is great too. Staff is knowledgable in beers and can give you a good recommendation based on your taste. I usually stop by once a week or so to get my fix. The spicy "Zigeuner" pork schnitzel is delectable and when you pair the homemade potato pancakes with the apple sauce you can't go wrong. I have paid $18 for a similar dish elsewhere and for $11 (you can't beat it for such an amazing dish. The spicy sauce is out of this world and it is what ties the al dente peppers and fried breaded pork schnitzel together. When you dip the potato pancakes into the apple sauce it's a pure delight. Be adventurous and add a fried egg to your "Zigeuner!" Forget the water grab a beer in a pint, goblet, or liter - your choice! You will rack your brain as there are some 40 beers on tap and then many more available in the bottle. When you look around you will think you have died and gone to beer heaven as you will be surrounded by beer in every corner! Lol. Enjoy and have a great time!!!

Again...let me preface this review by stating, I just moved to Tampa from Germany. JUST moved from Germany. You can never go wrong with German food, unless you're vegan. Schnitzel has become comfort food for me. So, I was exceptionally happy when I found a German restaurant with good reviews. (German food with an American twist, of course) We went here on a Saturday night. THE PLACE WAS JAM PACKED AND LIVE MUSIC WAS GOING!! I could not make up my mind what I wanted to eat. He ordered the schnitzel with sour cream sauce and I ordered sausage and saurkraut. (WHY? WHY? WHY? I lived in Germany for 2 years and never ONCE ordered sausage and saurkraut.) It was super busy so it took a little extra time for the food to come. When the food arrived, I was immediately sorry that I did not go with my gut and order the same as my date did. Visually it was just more satisfying before I tasted it. His food was better than mine. Sausage and saurkraut is not magically more flavorful because it's served at a German restaurant. It's still just that. But, The schnitzel is excellent! You can't go wrong with it. Overall, I LOVED THIS PLACE!!!! We only spent $50 for 2 entrees and 2 Hefeweisen. For an autentic dining experience with good food, I'd say that's money well spent!!! *They have authentic German chocolate candy here* This place is a win!!!

A little gem! Would have never expected a great German restaurant in a little Tampa strip mall. I felt like I was in Germany! I tried the veggie strudel and it was excellent. Their warm potato salad is great too. Our entire party loved the food. Our waiter was great. Definitely recommend if you're looking for authentic German cuisine or just a new restaurant to try.

First order of business: Medando T's review is BS. There is absolutely no possible way that this happened at Mr. Dunderbak's. You can skip right over that bogus review right now and read the looooong list of five star reviews. Moving along. This place is solid. Excellent food, people, beer, atmosphere. Everything. There's a reason it's been around for so long. I don't live in Tampa anymore, but when I visit, I definitely patron Mr. Dunderbak's.

Been coming to this place for years, and am never disappointed when beer shopping. Some of the food is exemplary, while some nails German "authenticity" with it's blandness. My massive veal schnitzel had only three mushrooms in it, BUT I was able to taste quite a variety of mustards with it that I really loved. While I'll certainty limit my German sausage intake to the Lagerhaus from now on, I will definitely return here to catch Accordion Joe on his perch, and peruse the Hall of Beers while interacting with the amazing staff. Sandwiches here are good too. Feeling thirsty? The online beer list is far more updated and user friendly than any menu or scrolling screen you'll find inside, sadly. Great place for holiday shopping because of the options, and the helpful staff.

Really fun place to go for something a little different that feels one part authentic Germany and one part Epcot Germany. ;) The food is great and cheap. For about $11 you can get a giant portion of schnitzel (breaded and fried cutlet of veal or pork) and two sides. That's pretty much the most expensive thing on the menu. You'll also find other German fare like bratwursts, sauerkraut, potato salad and BEER. Their beer selection is heavenly and they have so many on tap. I usually try one of the Hefeweizens. Again, the price is right and you can expect to pay around $6 for a pint of fantastic beer. They even have several long communal tables like what you'd find in a true beer hall in Germany. It's definitely not quiet in here and they usually have live German music. Not exactly a romantic date spot but more of a place to unwind with a boisterous group of friends. They also have a little market at the back of the store that has tons of imported foods as well as fresh sausages. There's a more private room in the front as well as what I call the man cave -- a den with oversized leather seating and another bar. It gets crowded here on the weekends, so expect to wait. This is definitely something unique to do in Tampa and worth a visit. I'd love for them to open another location with an outdoor beer garden.

Great: - Beer selection - Food - Service That's why I give this place 5 stars. Never had a bad experience here even when it's busy. Food and beer are priced extremely fairly. Staff is knowledgeable about the beer and patient when it comes to finding what you want. The only bad thing about this place is that it's not closer to home.

I didnt eat here...but I did get left overs The venison sausage was superb- even reheated. I can wait to really go to this place! I cant understand how my husband even left me a bite. I could taste the beer braise and the tang of venison. The speaztle were pretty decent too and I make my own regularly because they are so disappointing at most places. This place seems like a no brainer for our next Tampa trip

As someone that has been to an actual German beer hall in Munich, I had high expectations. Mr. Dunderbak's is freakin' awesome. The atmosphere makes you feel like you are actually in Germany. There is sometimes live music and it really has the feel of a beer hall. The food is absolutely DELICIOUS. Both times I have eaten here, I've had different variations of the Shnitzel. It is SO fattening and yummy. A real treat! The beer. Oh the beer. Yet another thing I love about Dunderbak's. They have a great selection and the staff is very knowledgeable. The candy selection is awesome. If you are in the mood for Kinder Eggs or Haribou Gummy Bears, you have come to the right place. Honestly..it is pretty apparent that I'm a fan. Get your Leiderhosen ready and your Oom Pa Pa pants on and head on out to Mr. Dunderbak's for an amazing German kinda time!

I lived in Germany for two years and this food, while ok-good, is Americanized German food. Years ago when Mr. Dunderbak's was in the University Mall they had more authentic German food. Now it's just selling beer and imported European food. The German standard currywurst (grill bratwurst covered in curry ketchup) was taken off the menu. The brochens are not brochens, they are dinner rolls no matter what they call them. Since they've moved their food is a disappointment.

Always a great experience at Mr Dunderbak's. Great atmosphere, awesome beer selection and the food is fantastic. I usually get the Weiner Schnitzel (pork pounded thin and breaded) with the potato pancakes and cheeze spatzel. So delicious! Big portions and the food is very authentic. Also love that you can buy German food, snacks and treats in the back. Love me some marzipan. Highly recommend!

Heard some good things about this place so we went here for lunch. The server was extremely nice and pleasant. The food wasn't too bad. The beer selection is pretty awesome. Boyfriend got the meatloaf and I got some nuner platter thing. The meatloaf reminded me of spam but a little better. The potato salad wasn't for me but I'm sure some people would like it. My seasoned potatoes were very similar to home fries. I liked those the most out of everything we had. I'd come here for the beer over the food. :)

In town for a couple days for a buddy's bday. Came here, since we collectively love this place. Turns out we reserved was given away in front of our eyes, so we're sitting a group of 14 on benches. This has made me very sad: you shouldn't lie to your patrons. Added one star back for our server, the dude is on point.

This was a unique experience that I was try again. It serves authentic German food and atmosphere with flags displayed, German music in the background, and an ample amount of beers to choose from. It also has a little romantic gazebo in the middle of the restaurant that you can be served in that I would have loved to sit at (it was taken when we were there). Overall, it was a great experience. I recommend trying it. P.S. Try the chicken cordon-bleu bites as an appetizer. Amazing.

Update - the office manager called the next day and explained that the girl who took the order 'Nurnburger sausage' instead of platter, so that's why the order was messed up. She said she will send a $10 gift certificate as an apology, so I added a star. Nice they followed up on that.

What's not to love about an authentic German restaurant! we were at a local brewery have a good tour and decided to finish the day with some amazing German food. we sat at the bar had authentic pretzels a cheese spread and bratwurst how much everything was great! this place has one of the largest beer selections I have ever seen at a restaurant and the staff is extremely knowledgeable of all of them and really friendly. Highly recommend stopping here!

This is hands down one of my favorite places to go in Tampa, and has been one of my go-to places when I have friends visiting. They have a large menu of a variety of food, but if you go, you MUST get the potato pancakes, and yes, you need to try it with BOTH the sour cream and applesauce. I was skeptical in the beginning, but it was SO WORTH. They have a large selection of beers, and the overall environment is very relaxed and chill. Would recommend that if you want to go and eat and not be limited in what you can order, go earlier, at night they close part of the kitchen and you pretty much are limited to sandwiches and salads.

I've been here a few times. As a vegetarian I I've had the Mediterranean platter, which is ok if you like a lot of smoked paprika in your hummus, but the potato pancakes are amazing and I love pickles and ordering a lot of sides was great - pickles (of course), a pierogi, and Oma's cucumber salad, which is nice to have in the Florida heat. I'm not much of a beer drinker but they have a very nice range of ciders.

This is my favorite, favorite place in Tampa. I'd give it more stars if I could! The staff and owner are great people, good service and phenomenal food. They make great little German potato pancakes from scratch with potatoes and onions, fried to a delicate golden brown and served with creamy sour cream and fresh, chunky applesauce that tastes homemade. The Reuben Dog is the stuff of legends, as are their goulash and wurst dinners. It's popular with the USF crowd and locals. It's jam packed a lot of the time because it's such a gem and worth the wait. Prices are low too, especially for the quality of the food and atmosphere. An absolute must if you're in Tampa.

We have not eaten here since they were in the mall, but they never disappoint! The restaurant was great, I loved the bench tables and the food was delish! I highly recommend the leberkase which is a german meatloaf, with the consistency of a german weiner but far more flavorful. The red cabbage and the spatzle were also good. Craft soda was flat and not worth $2 a glass. Service was unremarkable.

Not only was this restaurant a culinary delight, it was a fun overall experience. There is a deli and a huge selection of products ranging from curry ketchups to candies. The beer menu was, as one could imagine for a German restaurant, was vast and wonderful. The jaegerschnitzel was phenomenal, but nothing beat their potato pancakes which simply can't be beat. TIP: There are handles on the bathroom doors, people. Don't walk, face first, into the door like a drunken idiot.

If you want authentic German food, then you need to come here to dine. The menu is large with a variety of traditional German sandwiches, grilled sausages, entrees & desserts. They have the largest selection of German beers I have ever seen. Our party of four enjoyed the Nurnberger Sausage Platter, Der Blue Max sandwich with added German sauerkraut, Der Reuben sandwich & vegetarian meatless Reuben sandwich. All of us loved every single bite. Even though we were quite full, we couldn't resist ordering a couple Nachspeisen (Desserts). We all shared the Haus Made Black Forest Cake & Baklava. The cake was delicious! I have to admit that even though the Baklava was good, it just didn't seem to be the right dessert to end a delicious German meal. Besides being an authentic German restaurant, they also have a wonderful deli & German grocery items like spatzle & assorted mustards. If only I lived in FL, I would eat here often. I know I will definitely come again the next time we are back visiting family in Wimauma.

Wanted to play trivia while staying in town with family. This was on a list of places in Tampa for trivia and located right around the corner. The food was delicious!! We all got the schnitzel and it was done perfectly. The green beans were a little plain, but the potato pancakes made up for it. Although we got fifth in trivia, it was put together well and lots of fun!

I really do enjoy coming to eat here. They have a large selection of beers to choose from, a bit on the pricy side but what do you expect. Most of the servers here are pretty cool. They seems to have good knowledge of the food and beer selection. The last time I was here I must have got a new guy because he was a little awkward and tending to not say much and answer my question with one word answers. Not the best server but whatever. The food here makes up for the flaws. Presentation is so so but taste is definitely there. I usually get there sandwiches by I have had bites of my friends food and it's always great tasting. They also have a couple of sause and mustards on the table you can use as you like. The atmosphere here is something you would like to come back too. It's easy going, not too loud, but loud enough were you can talk comfortably and not really worry if the table next to you can here you conversation. All in all I enjoy coming here and will come again. This is a great place for family, friends, or hang outs.

Dunderbaks is a very fun place to go for dinner. I just wish they were located closer to South Tampa so I could go more often. Great beer selection, they say that they update their website's beer list pretty often but I went in there with a beer they mentioned on their website and they did not have it. Either way, I still got a good beer. Their Reuben sandwich is to die for. Definitely one of the best things on the menu. Potato pancakes are great as well as the pretzels. All I need is a warm soft pretzel and beer and I am a happy girl. The warm German potato salad is very good as well and comes as a side option with most of the entrees. Overall, a great place to go for some German food and fun. They have someone playing Polka music quite often as well.

  • Sunny G.

Overall, Dunderbaks is really good for its food. I've only ever had the wienershniztel, and it tastes amazing and the quantity is amazing. I will say that the quality of both the food and the service can be spotty at times, which is why I docked the one star. Overall, a top tier place and I'd definitely recommend it.

I've been coming here for years, since back in the day when it was at the mall. I've never been disappointed. The beer list is always awesome. Vegetarians will have limited options but that's German cuisine for you. My favorite foods are the potato pancakes, chicken wings, Der Caravan, the Jagersnitzel and the Cheese Spatzel. If you're watching calories, beware of any sandwich that is a "triple decker"; that means it comes with three slices of bread and will be bigger than a small child. Just ask them to hold the third slice of bread and you'll get a more reasonable size sandwich.

Best German food restaurant experience...ever - including actual restaurants in Germany! The ambiance transforms you to Germany and the delicious food confirms you are there!! I had bratwurst and German potato salad. We sampled beer and cider and three deserts, all lovely! The potato salad is hands down the best I've ever had. My only complaint was that it took long while for food to come out (45 min or so). It was worth the wait!!

Holy beer choices Batman! Love love love how every time, every server has extensive knowledge of the hundreds of beers they have on tap. The vegetarian rueben is good. They could use more vegetarian options. I love the little market inside as well. The home made apple sauce is delicious!

What a great little find in the New Tampa / Tampa Palms area! Mr. Dunderbak's is located just north of Ehrlich Road / Bearss Avenue on Bruce B. Downs Blvd in the same little strip mall with Acronis Greek Taverna and Takara Sushi & Saki Bar. The restaurant is a combination biergarten and European-style market with some mighty delicious German dishes. The official Bier Polizei and Beer Geeks are there to help you select from the 400 cans and bottles of beer in the chilled bier kellers, as well as the 50 or so draft beers, lagers, ales, stouts, etc. The menu is a fabulous mixture of hearty pub grub sandwiches and very traditional German delicacies. I ordered the veal jagerschniztel which was a pounded and breaded veal cutlet, fried, and then smothered in a delicious brown mushroom and onion gravy. That came with two sides, and I selected sauerkraut and warm German potato salad. What a delicious lunch! My waitress recommended a pint of Einbeecker Schwarzbier which was a dark lager, and it perfectly balanced the spicy gravy. After eating I wandered around inside to see the smaller party rooms / beer halls which would be perfect for hosting a Yelp event (hint, hint). The butcher's case in the back of the store offers homemade sausages, sandwiches, sides, desserts, cheeses, and a large variety of German favorites including spicy mustards and curry ketchup, wines, beers, chocolates, and more. If you have an interest in home brewing, then Mr. Dunderbak's sells DIY brewing kits along with all of the proper glassware and beer steins. Raise your glass and toast to Mr. Dunderbak's by saying, "eine zwei drei, hinunter die Luke!!!" Ja, ja ist das gut!

Love this place! Great German beer and wine selection and really cool deco, it's a restaurant with authentic German food, a German deli, and a convenience store with lots of German snacks and candies. Layout of the tables was not my favorite, it's a little cramped, but service is really great. Try the schnitzel and potato pancakes and ask for a beer recommendation!

Best German food in Tampa BY FAR. I'm a German girl from New York and I was raised on German cuisine. This place is the real deal. The owner is passionate about good beer and good food...you can't go wrong here. Let's start with food: Schnitzel, Reubens, Spaetzle, Potato Pancakes, Pierogies, Brats. Only the beginning of the endless list of menu items. I have never had a bad dish here. If you eat food, you can find something here. They even have vegetarian options! But if you are looking for amazing German food, get your butt to this establishment!! BEER: I can't even begin to uptalk the beer here. I'm a big ole beer snob and this place always has something I've never tried. Sours, Weiss, IPAs, Stouts. The best of the best can be found here. Don't miss the epic events during Tampa Bay Beer Week. I've been to the Sour Beer Tasting as well as the St. Bernardus VS Saint Somewhere Tasting. Both were a beer lover's dream! If you like beer...you will LOVE this place. I must give props to the owner for caring so much about the beer selection. Atmosphere: Biergarten all around. Picnic tables and German decor. Great music on certain nights. There is an amazing German deli at the back of the restaurant where you can purchase meats and cold cuts. There is also an amazing selection of German chocolates and other products. Beer to take home? --RIDICULOUS selection!!! Prices are outstanding. Beers are much more affordable than competitors (WOB and Brass Tap) and selection is much better. Food is also fantastic for the price. Large sandwiches are $7-$10. Platters are about $10-$15. Parking is rough on the weekend since Dunderbak's is located on Bruce B Downs, by USF and in the same parking lot as Takara Sushi and Acropolis. You can park next door in the dentist/doctor plaza next door without tow worry. There is seating indoors and outdoors, but be prepared to wait on the weekend. This is a popular spot for a reason and is well worth the wait!!!

Located in a strip mall, it does not look like much on the outside but when you go inside it's very inviting. They have little tables and large picnic tables which is what we sat on. My kids had the plain schnitzel which was good, my husband had the venison sausages which were also good, I had the schnitzel with sour cream sauce which was not good -but my husband ate it anyway. The problem with my sour cream schnitzel was the pork was not pounded thin enough and the sauce was broken and chunky, instead of smooth and creamy. We also had the potato pancakes, spatzle and the red cabbage as sides, they were all pretty good. The reason I give 3 stars instead of four is because of the sour cream sauce and also a few more reasons: 1. No condiments were offered to us and we noticed other diners had been offered various sauces but we were not (would have been nice to try with the sausages). 2. Our server tried to give us a dirty chipped dish with visible black/brown smudges on it. 3. The restaurant was very cold inside brrrrrr, our food cooled down a little too quickly. 4. I found some of the offerings a little too expensive. With that said we will be back! The menu has a lot of items we still want to try and we will know to ask for condiments next time :)

I felt like I stepped out of my car right into Bavaria! Mr. Dunderbak's is an awesome little authentic German place. We came on a Saturday night and waited about 25 minutes for a table - not bad considering the place is small and it was packed. Upon being seated we received prompt and friendly service from our waiter. He brought us waters while we decided on beer and made some good suggestions too. I had the porter which was delicious, and my fiancé had something on cask which he thoroughly enjoyed. There was a man singing and playing live music dressed in lederhosen and it just added to the ambiance of the place. The food was amazing. My fiancé had the weiner schnitzel (plain) with veal and the meat was very tender and the breading was delicious. I had the sauerbraten which was wonderful. The vinegary gravy over the tender roast beef was awesome and I didn't even need a knife to cut it. We were a little disappointed they were out of the cold German potato salad but the hot one with vinegar and ham was a good substitute. We will most definitely be back to try other things!

On 7/28/2013, I wrote a review of the restaurant. On 8/5/2015, the owner James e aka JB. (apparently the same person) wrote a message to me stating, "Please never return to the restaurant. Find another place to attack. People like you give yelp a bad name!" No members of my family, no friends of mine, nor have I been to the restaurant since the negative experience and hostile messages by the owner two years ago have been to the restaurant so this was completely out of the blue. No worries, sir. None of us will be returning.

  • Shannon H.

I will keep this brief, since apparently the owner can get reviews taken down for no valid reason. My previous review was fair, honest, and adhered to the Yelp guidelines. I even gave it 4 stars! However, the owner did not like that I included two pieces of constructive criticism. He sent me a very rude message, and as I said, somehow got my review removed. I am giving it 3 stars now, because of the poor way the owner reacted to my perfectly fine review. It is sad, because I used to go there a lot, and enjoyed my experiences. Now, I will never go back as long as it remains under the current ownership. For those who want to try it out: Pros: good beer selection, good German food, also have American faire, servers are all friendly, good for large groups. Cons: takeout order always wrong, service can be spotty.

Ok tonight dunderbak's couldn't have better. I'm a sucker for good sauerbraten and tonight's was perfectly tender, beautiful presentation and plenty of their delicious gravy to share on the spaetzel which is also delightful. Our server was attentive and helpful. Way to go!

Food and fun and beer--oh my! This is the trifecta of amazing, and in an unassuming location. It is amazing (but true) that the best and most authentic German food and atmosphere can be found in the Tampa Palms neighborhood. But here we are, and they are nothing but the tops. Walk into Mr. Dunderbak's and be transported to the biergartens of the Bavarian countryside. They have nailed the atmosphere, with long communal tables and benches--they even have authentic German music on the weekends! But the best thing is the food. Oh, the food. IT IS SO GOOD. My personal favorite is their fabulous selection of sausages, paired with authentic sauerkraut, red cabbage, and German potato salad. It's just like my German grandma used to make, I swear--or what I get when I visit family in Germany. They even have the mustard! Top it all off with a vast, comprehensive sampling of beers from around the world--and a staff trained to help you pick just the right one, and you have my idea of heaven. It's nothing but heaven--at an affordable price to boot!

I have been hearing about this place since it opened. Doesn't anyone remember all the years it was open in University Mall? The only thing that has changed is the location. The ambiance is a bit brighter, still just as overcrowded and it draws in the people. All that being said, they have some pretty good food & sandwiches. Too bad I am not a beer drinker, as that is a big reason many of their patrons love this place. I got my cornbeef & swiss sandwich to go & while I was waiting for that I had a side of warm potato salad. The potato salad is quite different & usually amazing. This time there was far too much mustard, it overpowered the dish. When I heated & ate the cornbeef & swiss sandwich, it was piled high with moist, yet chewy & somewhat grainy cornbeef. Overall the sandwich was good, but not as good as I remembered & not as good as some deli's in Tampa. This is a fun spot to visit. Still trying to decide which location I liked the best. What's a girl to do? Keep on trucking, we have more stops to make tonight.

Craving a reuben sandwich and real potato salad, we decided to hit up Mr. Dunderbak's one Sunday afternoon. Not realizing they didn't open until noon on Sundays, we got there right when it opened, and were surprised at how quickly it filled up. Luckily it looked like they were ready for it, because there seemed to be plenty of staff on hand. Normally we like to sit at tables when we dine, but this is actually one of the few spots we enjoy sitting at the wood bar. The bartender was super friendly and efficient. We had a great time talking with him about sour beers and ciders - I am amazed at how much he knew about a wide variety of beverages. Plus, he brought us over a ton of samples of the different beverages we were talking about. It's pretty cool, too, that they have a huge screen over the bar that flashes with all the beverages they are currently offering, what 'type' of beer it is, and the different alcohol contents. We started our meal with the fried pickles - really good, lightly battered spears served with a tasty ranch dressing. Then, I had the aforementioned reuben sandwich, and it was delicious. I think what makes it perfect is the warm sauerkraut they use. It had just a bit too much 1000 Island dressing on it, so next time I'll probably get that on the side. All sandwiches are served with potato chips, but I also ordered a side of warm potato salad. It was German style, which means it's not chunks of potatoes swimming in mayonnaise, but slices in a warm vinegary dressing. Wonderful. The schnitzel is a huge seller here, and it is usually served with different toppings - my boyfriend had it plain in a sandwich, and unfortunately it was kind of bland that way. The restaurant also functions as a small market. It has a small deli counter, and they sell bottles of wine & beer and various German foods & condiments. They also carry a variety of international items that can be hard to find. I know I can always count on them to carry my favorite chocolate bars, the Cadbury Crunchie, a brand of British chocolate bar with a honeycomb toffee sugar center. To die for. This place definitely falls into the 'we need to get here more often' category, so hopefully it won't take me forever to return.

One of the best places in Tampa! Schnitzel with sour cream sauce or spicy sour cream sauce is outstanding! Cold potato salad is a must and the potato pancakes are the best I've ever had. Beer selection is on point and one of the only places in Tampa you can find some great German and English beers. Sandwiches are also delicious. Never a bad experience!

We are lucky enough to live down the street from Dunderbak's so it always seems to be an option whenever we are too lazy to make dinner... or don't want dinner leftovers from the night before. I've been to Dunderbak's twice and both times, have enjoyed some good brews and good eats. On the first visit, I was very excited that there was live music played by a man in the central part of the restaurant. Granted, it was too loud to have a conversation while he was playing but I really enjoyed it otherwise. During this visit, my hubby and I sat at the bar and had nice conversations with some of the bartenders. There are some really nice staff that work at Dunderbak's. All very knowledgeable about beer and happy to work there. We ordered the potato pancakes (duh) and they were delicious (DUH). I was also pleased to see all the authentic sweets and treats found near the two rear walls of the restaurant, along with sausages and meats of all kinds. I was like a kid in a candy shop... a German candy shop. On our second visit, we sat in the room directly to the right of the entrance. This was a nice little room that was good for watching sporting events on the mounted TVs. On this visit, I was able to try more menu options because we went with my in-laws. Sour Cream Schnitzel: Rich and savory like a home-cooked meal, highly recommended! Schnitzel Hawaii: Good for those with a sweet tooth. Venison Sausage Platter: Really, really good venison-pork sausage with kraut included so you can still pick two other side items to enjoy. Oktoberfest Sausage Platter with Polish Kielbasa and Andouille Sausage: You get to pick two sausages from their sausage menu- good for those that are indecisive and want to try them all. For dessert, we had the Dessert Pierogies and Homemade Apple Strudel with Vanilla Ice Cream. I liked the raspberry reduction covering the pierogies but wasn't a fan of the cheese filling. The apple strudel was good but I was hoping for something remarkable. I may give them another try. We plan on making (many) future visits to demolish the rest of the menu. More to come!

Weiner schnitzel was delicious had the pork loin. Tasted just like a home cooked meal. Great beer selection as well, but haft to do that on a separate trip as I was very full! Service was pretty good too!! Definitely coming back. Best German food in the Bay Area.

A very unique place! I've been to this place when it was in the mall and when they over to their current location. They have a great selection of German and Belgian beers and ales. The Belgian - delirium was THE best beer ever!! They have excellent choice of meats, sausages and oh the chocolates, you cannot miss those!!!

I've spent a lot of time Germany and this place is the closest you're going to get without the passport and airfare! You'll be greeted by traditional German music as you walk through the double wooden doors and into a narrow hallway that brings you to the main room. Step back in awe and take in everything that is this magical place. From the gazebo that is placed in the center of the room, to the extended bar to the right, the meat and cheese deli in front of you, imported chocolates, wine and food and over 500 craft beers to the left, you'll feel like a foreigner in a foreign land. That land being the Motherland of course. Sit down at a table or if you want the real German experience, have a seat at one of the four traditional biergarten benches and enjoy the company of others and if you're the lucky nominee, you'll get to stand up and lead everyone in the tune of "Ein Prosit," in which you'll close with a cheer to everyone and then chug. (Just kidding but I'm sure this would be acceptable behaviour and awarded with even more beer.) The menu options are wunderbar (as my German cousin would say). I have tried their cheese and ham spatzle (delicious handmade and panfried German noodles smothered in cheeses and pieces of ham which makes it even more savory). The jagerschnitzel is award worthy and their brats (sausages) have just the righty juicy, meaty and spiciness. The potato salad is sweet and sour which is not traditional in Germany (it's just sour) but their version is still good. My apologies for not being able to comment on the beer but I'm not a beer drinker (yet). However, from the looks of the selection they give I believe your beer drinking needs will be exceeded here. I always have great service at Dunderbak's. The staff is super friendly and helpful. I've only been here for lunch but I can only imagine how much fun it would be to drink here at night. This place is cozy and full of good cheer! My advice? Get over here before you've missed the chorus to the aforementioned song... "Schenkt ein, trinkt aus, schenkt ein, trinkt aus!" (I poured you one, drink it up, I poured you one, drink it up!).

Service can be slow, but beer is great. Authentic Bavarian dishes, and wonderful sandwiches. Very consistent food, at a fair price. A common place for the young hipsters who are cool and plentiful. The beer snobs are plentiful also, and they are cool too.

Once the music starts and the crowd starts clapping you will too! Live German drinking music on the accordion puts us all in the spirit! This is good German food- we always get the potato pancakes , schnitzel and a Rueben sandwich They have more delicious beers on tap than you can try in one meal- be sure to bring the designated driver! We always shop - they have a deli with meats and cheeses to bring home Get some wieners - they are natural casings and very tasty Be sure to get some chocolates and a few mustards as well

We drove over 20 miles based on very favorable reviews. The restaurant has the appearance of an old work beer garden with many beer choices on tap. I really enjoyed the dark Kostritzer beer. The veal and pork schnitzels were tasty and tender. A little heavy on the breading, and they were deep fried instead of sauted. Other than the potato pancakes, the other sides were not so impressive. The red cabbage and green beans seem to be not home made. Would I return? Yes and no.

Upon entering this place, you are immediately transported into another world. It sort of reminds me of Epcot, with the excessive German decor (in a good way!), background polka music, and the small market/deli in the back, but it's a great place to chill and grab a brewski at. For beer, they have a wide selection and their menus change almost on the daily, so for any beer connoisseurs, you won't be disappointed. For their food, you really can't go wrong with any German food. My favorites are the potato pancakes and all of their sausages haha. The potato pancakes though....if you don't know what to get just get these and you'll be more than satisfied. The best I've had, and I'm not exaggerating. Every time I come to this place and get the potato pancakes, they are consistently amazing! The only thing I wish they had more of are TVs. I think there are only 2 tucked in the bar area, and the place isn't normally too packed but that really deters me from coming to watch games and all that jazz. So....potato pancakes and beer. Get those.

Come with an empty stomach when you hit a German place. The jäger schnitzel was outstanding as was the potato pancakes and sauerkraut. It was overall wonderful experience. Had we more time, the beer would've been kept flowing. Suffice to say, I tried the Klumberbacth on the waiters recommendation and loved it. Switched to Delirium Tremens once I saw the coaster and realized they had the bottle. Awesome vibe for everyone; it was trivia night. The local crowd is very tame.

Great sandwiches and a vast beer selection. I love coming here for the food and to sample different beers from around the world. It is authentic, so make sure you know what your getting (not a fan of the warm potato salad), but there are dozens of tasty options and condiments to try. Also, two words: Das Boot.

First rate beers, decent food and a deli and German grocery to boot. Def come for the brews and stick for a sandwich or schnitzel.

Dunderbak's, the place that was serving up wide varieties of German and Belgium beers when the owners of WOB were still in their dad's ballsack. Since 1974, this has been the place to be in Tampa if you wanted a great sandwich, rare mustards, German or Polish sausages, beer and schnitzel. Since then, a few German spots have come and gone. Karl's Kitchen on South Dale Mabry and Schnitzelhaus come to mind. The last time I actually went to Dunderbak's until last night was in 1988. I obviously didn't appreciate it at the tender young age of 14, so I was pretty excited to head there after so many years, and developing a keen appreciation for beer. I think they have 50 beers on tap and a few hundred different options in bottles. They have all of my favorites. Tripel Karmeliet, Franziskaner, Coppertail, Omegang, etc. Literally more beer than you can shake a stick at, but beer was secondary to our visit last night. La Chica and I were hungry and came for the foodstuffs! I got the Oktoberfest sausage platter where you pick two links and two sides. I went with the wienerwurst and Polish sausage. On the side, I got spatzel and kraut. I'm going to compare these to the sausages and sides I recently had at Lagerhaus in Palm Harbor because their stuff sort of sets the standard for me. Dunderbak's gets their sausage from Karl Geier's Sausage Kitchen in Sarasota. They advertise that their sausages have "no fillers or cereal," which is good. Lagerhaus makes all of their sausage in-house and advertise "no fillers or funny body parts," so both places are on the same page. Where they differ is in taste. While Dunderbak's was very tasty, Lagerhaus' sausage is far more superior. Probably because they boil theirs in beer before grilling them. As for the sides, Dunderbak's kraut is excellent, and better than Lagerhaus. However, Lagerhaus comes back for the knockout blow with their spatzel, which blows Dunderbak's out of the water. So in summary, Lagerhaus has better sausage and spatzel. HOWEVER, La Chica order the schnitzel, and holyOMGLOLROFLJesusChrist... Best schnitzel I've ever had in my life. So next time I'm craving schnitzel, this is where I'm coming! Laslty, Dunderbak's has a "beer hall" that sells most of their beers at a discounted price. You name it, and it's probably in there. Couple that with their Euro grocery items, deli meat counter and chocolates, this place just wins! Props to our bartender Jeremy for being courtesy and patient with us while we struggled to decide what beer and food we wanted. It was a truly overwhelming offering.

Fun place. Had the Oktoberfest Platter with knackwurst and weisswurst. Sausages were tasty--not over seasoned and cooked perfectly. Spaetzle with jäger gravy--YUM! Cucumber salad was so Delish. Try the veal schnitzel if you're in the mood. Potato pancakes--perfect. Weiss bier? Can't go wrong! Love this place.

I've come here before but only to buy stuff (candies, beer, etc.) to take home. This was my first time for lunch. I had a Founders Rubaeus ($8 tulip) and he had a liter size Weihenstephaner hefe, I think. Both were great and refreshing after a long bike ride. For lunch he had pork wiener schnitzel with spaetzle and a pierogie and I had a sausage (smoked bauernwurst) with spaetzle. We shared the German soft pretzel (not the Super Pretzel) with a scoop of that seasoned cheese. His schnitzel was very tender, the spaetzle was perfectly firm with a nice crisp from being sauteed, and the sausage was flavorful and not greasy. I enjoyed the Beaver Cranberry Mustard with the sausage. All the food was fantastic! I thought $5.99 was a good price for a link of sausage with a side and pretzel roll. Then we finished eating and things went wrong. We were eating outside and our server had been knowledgeable and friendly...and then he disappeared. I needed to get to work. We tried to catch the hostess (who came outside to bus a table) and the other server who was taking care of tables outside but were ignored. I went inside, found our server behind the bar making some recommendations to patrons regarding local breweries (cool), signaled that I need the check, he nodded at me. I wait several more minutes. I go inside again and let the hostess know who our server is and that we really need our check or I will be late to work. She says ok. I wait several more minutes. I finally go inside, corner the server, and say, "I need the check now. If I cannot have it now we are just going to leave because I cannot be late to work." It has at this point been 15-20 minutes since we stopped eating and 10 minutes since I FIRST asked him for the check (which one should never have to do). He had not printed it yet. I stood at the bar and waited for it to be printed, stood there and waited for the card to be processed, signed, and left. Stressful ending to a very pleasant meal and I arrived at work (after running across the lot and up the stairs) with only 1 minute left to spare. Not cool, hipster server...not cool. I'm sure we'll be back but we'll make sure our schedule is wide-open before making the trek north again.

This place is a little bit over-hyped and has become sort of a disappointment. Been to this new location a few times; the last time being about 2.5 years ago. I always thought Mr. Dunderbak's was pretty extraordinary. But went this past Friday night and right off the bat it started bad. Serious parking issues at this location but I won't fault Mr. Dunderbak's for this. But be warned, you might have to park at the lot across the street to get inside the restaurant. Before being seated, my girlfriend had to use the restroom and she came out with a frightened look on her face and explained that there were a bunch of flies in the restroom and around the kitchen area (more on this later). Some good housekeeping/managing hints and words of advice - please provide more drink menus for all the tables. We had to beg the people next to us to borrow theirs (we sat at a communal fest-haus bench). I mean how hard would it be to provide 2-3 beer menus for each fest-hause table? And same goes with the mustard. I had to get up and steal some mustard from another table. Plus, the mustard wasn't labeled. So you didn't know if you had spicy brown, German, honey mustard, etc. As for the food. Ehhh, not bad but not really that good. Their reubens (and variations of it) are just par. Trust me when I say, The Lucky Dill has not only much better tasting reubens but you get way more and for about the same price. Mr. Dunderbak's skimps on the Thousand Island and sauerkraut. The rye bread was bland and looked lifeless. The meat (corned beef and pastrami) was just decent. They really need to step up their game on their sandwiches. I had the Schnitzel Holstein; which wasn't bad. You get a large piece of shnitzel but the eggs on top of it were very small and only two. The schnitzel was good around the center but once you got to the edges it got dry and bland. The sides are where Mr. Dunderbak's excels. Tried a few different ones and all were really good. As for the cleanliness mentioned above, halfway during out dinner we were surrounded by not only fruit flies but by regular flies. I'm assuming they came from the kitchen, bar, and restroom areas? But the worst was when I got one of Mr. Dunderbak's excellent imported German beers. After my 3rd sip, something just didn't smell right. Thought at first it was the beer but determined it was the glass itself. It reeked of dirty, gross dishwater. Double checked with my girlfriend and the waiter himself - both made the same squinty, wretched face of grossness when they smelled inside the glass. Stuff like this happens, but for a German restaurant with good beer; unacceptable. Please Mr. Dunderbak's don't ruin good beer; wash your glasses better and cleaner each and every time. I do like the atmosphere at Mr. Dunderbak's. With the flags, seating set-up, beer bottles and boxes, and the guy playing the accordion in the middle of the restaurant in a gazeebo. Fun and festive ambience although; I wish their gifts and store merchandise was easier to look at. You have to have your butt a few inches from people eating when looking and paying for what they have. Overall - 3.75 stars

Mr. Dunderbaks, a gem that is worth travelling to from my oasis of good food and drink in the Heights. It's like a mini stay-cation to Bavaria; especially when they have the live music, then you just need to get tanked, drink wurst, and it's the complete experience, minus the Germans. The decorum is pretty traditional German, very Southern Germany, if you've been to Bavaria, or Southern Germany, you will know what I am talking about in regards to the atmosphere. They have a wide variety of beer, mostly German but many others from around the world. The beer selection is enough to keep you busy for sure. The food is filling, and heavy, as most traditional German dishes are no known for their light fare. I have yet to get something I don't like their, usually I just get Wurst, but the sandwiches are great, as well as the Schnitzel. While it might be selfish of me to wish we had this restaurant closer, it's always worth the occasional trip to treat myself to a piece of my culture. Enjoy!

Set up like a small German brew haus, this place is really fun and different. With over 500 different bottles of beer and more than 50 drafts to choose from, you will never be disappointed with selection. The food is awesome! The German food is dead on and really good (from what I have tried so far), and they also have a sandwich shoppe inside, which i use for occasional to-go orders. Their sandwiches are killer, too! Prices are extremely reasonable. Entrees range in price from $10-15 and sandwiches from $7.50-14 (the $14 sandwich is a ridiculous BEAST of a sandwich). If you like a lively, quaint, social atmosphere that has a very friendly staff and excellent libations, don't pass up Mr. Dunderbak's.

If you're into German food it's definitely what is up. I really enjoy the potato pancakes. They have a wide variety of hot sauces and a killer applesauce to accompany them. The service is usually fast and friendly. #hangoverhaven

First time I tried a German Brew Pub and this was the one in the area of Tampa with the best reviews on Yelp. A bit of a stretch to the four stars on this due to slow service and an incorrect meal served. It was Monday trivia night and they were slammed, so patience was understandable. Also I was not in a hurry with meeting up with family to talk and take our time. The dining room is composed of long tables with benches to set on. It's cramp and cozy and you will surely know your neighbor by the end of your meal. It is also a loud place as customer are enjoying a brew and conversation, so just expect this and roll with it. There are two tables for outdoor dining if you want to get away from the noise and crowd. The tables are right up to the curb parking area and many would not like it, others may be fine with just getting out of the dining room. Server good, not great. Food above average with nice traditional schnitzel meals with deserts. Atmosphere off the hook cool... loved everything even the awkward gazebo in the middle. The strong selection of bottled imports and tap sets this place apart from possibly any place in all of Tampa, possibly Florida. It's a big USF hangout, so just know this because if has a college hangout feel to it. A group of students beside us ordered a boot which is over a liter of beer. The first time you order it if drinking it all with out a spill it's on the house. Check them out for a very unique cultural dining experience.

Awesome, one of a kind place in New Tampa. I've been here with my fiancé', and we've brought the kids by for lunch, and I look forward to bringing my very German father here for lunch next time he comes to visit. They have quite the variety of beer choices, and the menu is legit. The reuben is fantastic, and you can get it with turkey instead. The Pommes Frites (or french fries) are amazing and totally worth the calorie intake. I'd skip the kids' chicken nuggets, as they were just frozen junk, but everything else seems authentic. You can even shop for souvenirs and candies and/or get food to go. This is a really popular place for people to go to watch sporting events on their TV's, so keep this in mind with your timing since it gives it a more sports bar feel. But definitely check it out...you are pleasantly surprised when you walk in. It doesn't seem like someplace so cool could be in this little strip mall!

In town on business. Stopped in after dinner with friends, blown away on all the great beer on tap and bottles. Pricing is market compared with others but it certainly doesn't have that institution look inside like WOB and unlike WOB the bartenders can explain the nuances of the selections.
