owner very friendly. darn girl at counter could at least smile for a second. the black girl was really friendly but that front register white girl didnt ask me white or wheat. i hate wheat. esp. BLT or grilled cheese. anyway the menu said assorted juices. she didn't tell me choices and just started pouring juice. seemed to push me through. she could smile and get that scowl off her face. prices were high. 4 bucks for a grilled cheese? way overpriced. If it weren't for the rude girl, it would be acceptable.

In all the years I've lived in Tallahassee, I never came around to having brunch here, and after having done so today, I'm upset for not doing so sooner. Uptown Café is located in what appears to be a 50s strip mall. It has two very pleasant outdoor patios and ample indoor seating, including an overflow space they rent out for private functions. Today (Sunday) there was about a 15 minute wait for brunch. I ordered the blackened chicken hashbrowns (pictured) with a side of grits. Had I known the portion was so generous, I probably wouldn't have ordered the grits--which were great on their own. The coffee was good, and the fact each table has its own creamer is a small detail that I appreciate rather than those nasty artificial creamers. In short, the food was great, and for the price, you can't beat it. As for the service, I have to say the food took a little more time to arrive than I'm accustomed to, but given its high-quality ultimately, I think the extra wait was well worth it. The hostesses and waitresses were very sweet and upbeat. This is definitely one of Tallahassee's best brunch places.

I was excited to grab my lunch at Uptown Cafe because I read so many positive reviews on Yelp. What happened??? I ordered the cashier's recommendation, which was the "Option" sandwich. I did not care for the bread selection chosen for the sandwich, so I asked if I could switch to another type of bread. I was told I could, but it would cost extra. I ordered the sandwich on the bread of my choice, which was the multi-grain ciabatta. I was surprised that for a sandwich that comes with nothing on the side, I was charged over $9. To make the meal a "combo" (which includes a small drink and a bag of chips), they charge an additional $2.85. For dessert, I also ordered the cashier's recommendation which sounded delicious - a chocolate chip/butterscotch chip/peanut butter chip cookie. I "tried" to eat my sandwich, but between the sogginess of the bread that was drenched in a mixture of liquid and grease, I took one bite and immediately discarded the entire sandwich. To me, it was simply inedible. Famished, I looked forward to dessert. Sadly, that was all wrong too! Instead of the cookie she recommended, she gave me a cookie that was nothing like she described. It tasted like a spice clove. There were no chocolate, butterscotch chips, or peanut butter chips in the cookie. I tossed the cookie too! I had to leave and eat at another establishment. Obviously I will NOT be returning to this place. After reviewing the yelp reviews further, it is evident they are more popular for their breakfast than lunch.

Haven't had any food yet but am so annoyed had to post. When we arrived there were two tables one in the sun and one in the shade. Katy, the hostess, led us to the one in the sun. It being 85 degrees we requested to go to the table in the shade. We were rudely told by Katy that she had to take care of her servers and seat us in the sun. When I questioned why she would take care of the servers over the customers she shrugged and half heartedly pulled the table half way into the shade.... Let's hope the food is good....

Awesome. Fresh, delicious, and balanced. A great experience from the moment you sit down to getting the check. Had several items here, but most recently the salad with the glazed salmon which is phenomenal. Love the ice tea with a little mint backdrop.

The beloved, homegrown diner has generated a cult following of sorts over the years. Yet, the more I frequent Uptown, the more I discover new walks of life. This is the place where you bring your parents when they visit for the weekend. Uptown's food is current and dependable, while not ever being boring. The enticing eats and genuine hospitality elevate the bar. No wonder why the business continually flourishes. Uptown used to be dirt-cheap. I remember the days when you could walk out of there without even noticing a hole in your pocket. Within the last year, they've increased prices and updated their menu. And when I say, "increased prices," don't run for the hills. An entrée and unlimited refills on coffee doesn't even break the $10 mark. My last visit was simply splendid. All of us enjoyed our meals, while soaking up the outdoor patio. If traffic and loud noises aren't your thing, then I recommend not sitting outside. Smack in the center of a busy intersection, Uptown is surrounded by high intensity motorways. Anything from the Johnny Cash to the Uptown Benny to the Mancakes are delicious breakfast alternatives. I'd recommend Uptown to out-of-towners, locals and my closest friends. I'm a huge fan of your operation, Uptown. Fresh, local cuisine at its best.

Horrible! Food had no flavor! Service was not good felt ignored. Portions are small. Kids menu comes out plain and boring.

Looking up at me from my plate, my omelette has but four words for me: "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash." Nothing else need be said as the simple American smoky omelette crashes into my pallate. I stare into my coffee. Like a low rumble I hear: "we'll all be equal under the grass, and God's got a heaven for country trash."

My girls and I went for breakfast Labor Day weekend. We didn't have to wait long for a table outside. Food and service was great, one star off for the constant flies, but the weather was pleasant and that's just the vagaries of outdoor dining. I had the smoked salmon omelette and the cream cheese was so delish. I added avocado too. We split the banana bread French toast which has was perfect - nutty, moist, not too sweet. My youngest had bacon pancakes. Everything was great. Friendly owner. Attentive wait staff. Very busy place. Parking could be a challenge but we found a spot tight as we pulled in. Loved it!!

Pretty good food at a very reasonable price. I ordered the smoked salmon omelet and the Neil's grit bowl and both were great. I will be back soon!

This is a great breakfast and lunch spot with moderately priced eats and pretty good service. The salmon and grits are a really great combo. A must try for sure if you like smoked salmon! The coffee is okay, but it gets the job done. The restaurant it self is a bit divvy and it can be a challenge to get parking. But overall I think this place is worth a try and will satisfy your morning/afternoon hunger.

For the last 15 years Katie's in Carmel CA was my favorite breakfast spot. This place has a creative and amazing menu. Execution is flawless and Fred the owner is so friendly he makes you want to own a restaurant.

My husband and I LOVE Uptown Cafe! We eat breakfast there just about every weekend. My husband, Rodney, eats lunch there frequently as well. I'll start with the food! It's always fresh and delicious! My favorite breakfast item is the smoked salmon omelet with sprouts, tomatoes, and garlic dill cream cheese! To die for! The pancakes are huge with tons of add-in options! They are always willing to cater an order to your liking which is a big plus for me! The staff know my husband by name which he loves. For lunch he loves their BLT and the smoked salmon sandwich, while I love the salmon salad or the greek garden sandwich! (Can you tell we are fans of the smoked salmon?) All of the staff are friendly and attentive, but the owner Fred is friendly to another level. He really strives to make people feel like they each matter and are part of the Uptown family. As others have mentioned, he is very involved in the local community. Every few months he hosts a charity for the day and calls it "Uptown Cares" where a certain percentage of the days profit goes to that charity. Rod and I will continue to return time and again!

We were on tour (4th Ward Afro- Klezmer Orchestra) and we stopped in for breakfast and the food was really good. They made a vegan grits bowl for me with hash towns. My friends got the eggs which were good and a friend got the garlic dill schmear on his bagel and said it was awesome. When in back in Tallahassee, I'll stop back in for breakfast. Thanks!

This was our first visit but won't be our last. My wife and I went for Sunday brunch. The food was fresh and hot. The service was good despite being such a busy place. The owner/manager is very customer friendly and is constantly interacting throughout the place.

Me and my friends read the reviews and decided to give it a try again. Big mistake. Took more than an hour to made four dried up sandwiches and the server's attitude aren't friendly at all. Sure will not go back to that hell hole.

This is a really good breakfast place my wife, daughter, and I go to frequently. It's a cozy locally owned restaurant. I have met the owner and he always sees to it his guests are taken care of. I like them for their breakfast but they have a great lunch menu as well. I go back time after time, after time.

Good brunch option. Order the B&B salad and substitute with the housemade honey mustard - yum! Order the banana bread for the table. Great to chat with the owner! The turkey sandwich was a hit at our table, too.

can't believe this place has any bad reviews, it's hands down the best place to get a sandwich in town. once you discover this place you'll never wanna eat a sandwich in tallahassee if it's not from here. the apricot smoked salmon is absolutely amazing. i recommend trying the smoked salmon sandwich and 'the option' on ciabatta. haven't tried breakfast here yet but i'm really looking forward to it.

Why have I not written a review before now? After all, I am a regular - for breakfast anyway. You could not ask for a better or more friendly staff. Try their wonderful homemade cinnamon rolls and cookies. Sandwiches- try the Ruben or the salmon or chicken salad... You get the idea. This is a small, locally owned establishment that is actively involved with the community. Their food is fresh and wholesome - if you consider huge meat Sandwiches wholesome. They do cater to vegetarians and vegans as well. My regular is to call in a breakfast on my way to work. Uptown egg on a croissant with bacon and mAyo. They have it ready and when I walk in, I have to pass those delicious cookies fresh from the oven. Wow!

A great place for breakfast. Coffee was good and they kept my cup filled. I had a pesto egg dish. I did ask for soft poached eggs but they were way over cooked. My husband loved his Omlette filled with Bradley sausage. We will return.

Food was good. Service terrible!! Girl taking orders uninterested in customers only In what MAC products her friends had bought. Out of Ruben's, out of Iced Tea. Just not a good experience. Out side tables filthy. Management lacking.

Love love love this place! We went as a family for brunch. As we walked to our table I saw the freshly made cinnamon rolls on the counter. The menu is full of delightful options. Two of us ordered breakfast bowls...choosing ingredients like eggs your way, breakfast meats, hash browns, cheeses, etc. I loved my Pesto Scram which had scrambled eggs with pesto and spinach, tomatoes and feta.

This place is awesome. It's our go-to for Saturday morning breakfast. You can't really go wrong with anything on the menu, but the grit bowls and blackened chicken hash are epic.

Loved this small cafe! Delicious breakfast with high quality ingredients! My husband ordered the smoked salmon omelette and I ordered the pesto scramble. They served us large proportions for a good price! Their breakfast menu was at all at a great price for the proportions. Pretty cheap- in my opinion- for a amazing food!

Absolutely delicious! Fred & his sweet wife have created a lovely little spot. It's a cozy little cafe with eclectic decor. The menu offers a huge variety of food choices (brunch all day, or lunch sandwiches/wraps/salads) and there are some great drinks too--Natalie's OJ from s. FL, or fresh-brewed mint iced tea (sooo yummy). I had the vegetarian omelet with a side of garlic dill cream cheese grits (VERY unusual and delish); my boyfriend had the Cybill Bait sandwich and loved it. We split a banana pancake which was also really good & fluffy. The portions of everything were enormous. Our waitress was really sweet and very attentive. Coffee was hot and strong. The owner (Fred) even stopped by our table at the end of our meal to make sure everything was going smoothly. I also loved the prices--most items were under $10 and the sides were really reasonably priced. We will definitely be back!

We've been regulars for some time now. The menu is diverse, with great bfast and lunch ingredients. As big alfresco diners, we rate this outdoor experience as top-notch. Relocated from downtown years ago, uptown cafe is an integral part if the TLH experience. I often get the has brown platter with over easy, Bradley's, spinach, sprouts and avocado. Sounds good, huh? See associated picture. Wife always gets the BD as is. Five stars in its category (local institutions, confident proprietorship, creative menu, compelling ambiance).

I am new to the Tallahasse area but me and my girlfriend have eaten here twice and we love it. We sit outside in the patio section both times and it's a great environment. The service is great and the food is always perfect. The owner even came to our table to greet us and he gave us a complimentary Bloody Mary to try out a new recipe he was working on. I am never disappointed and am planning on being a regular here.

I love this place and eat here regularly. The food is excellent and the people are extremely friendly. My breakfast of choice is the veggie grit bowl with pesto eggs.

This place has a great sense of community, the staff is friendly and there are always a good amount of people. The food however could use i little work. The eggs are great, but the biscuits and pancakes could use some work. The biscuits were what I had the first time, and they were a little dense. The pancakes are advertised as "as big as a plate", but with such a large pancake they can burn in order to cook. And that is what happened.to me. The top had slight burn marks which prompted me to look at the underside. It was black and the darkest brown, just shy of black. I tried to eat it hoping that it would be fine, but all I could taste was the char flavor. Maybe they should think about making two smaller pancakes that are cooked better than a gimmicky large burnt one.

This is a very unassuming little breakfast and lunch joint directly across from Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. The tell is that it's always busy. It is a great breakfast spot with things you just don't find elsewhere like muffins serves with egg and sprouts or a grits bowl with your choice of cheese, or fruit granola and yogurt parfait. Not the usual two fried with toast or fast food junk. Fred runs a friendly place. Many of the folks working there are college kids, so you might need to make the occasional exception for their learning curve. The true beauty of Uptown is that this is one of those places where everyone who is anyone will be seen. The owners are hugely committed to the community and the it shows. It's impossible not to run into someone here that you know and want to say hello to. Finally, Fred runs a couple of monthly barbecue specials that are not to be missed. The Apricot Glazed Smoked Salmon is nothing short of epic. And when it's Smoked BBQ Staurday night, the pork, chicken and ribs are a true southern delight. I have never had a bad meal here!

Went with my mom for a morning breakfast. The food was great and the service was great. The manager/owner was very customer friendly and funny. Their selection of food is great. Their location is in a peaceful and quiet area. I'll be back *Arnold Schwarzenegger voice*

For the most part the food is good. The pesto in the eggs and the cream cheese in the grits are wonderful additions. The sell the Bradley's country sausage....sometimes. The service is so so and borderline rude. The strap on my friend's purse broke and the server said, "oh that's ok its cheap". The service is slow. Give the place a try and see what you think. If you can get the things I listed above you won't be disappointed.

Omg the Blackened chicken hash browns are the best I have ever had. Amazing. Cute little deli almost too cool for an old guy like me but was still comfortable. Highly Recommend.

Went in on a Sunday after homecoming football game to get table for 10. Owner was super friendly and agreed to have table ready for us when we arrived an hour later. They have a large room they open on weekends for the extra demand. Food was awesome and unique. Perfect bacon and grit bowl with salmon was great. Pancake for kids was size of a frisbee and tasty. Banana bread French toast was also good. Waitress was super and attentive. Definitely where we will go next time we are in town.

Great breakfast with fresh ingredients and an innovative menu, great portion sizes for the price too! The staff are super friendly. Great place to relax and enjoy the morning! Cannot wait to go back.
