Our experiences here have been hit or miss. We have had some really amazing barbeque and some questionable meals. I think they did something to their nachos? Not sure if I'm right about this or not but I remember them being simple with guacamole, melted cheese, jalapeños, pulled pork and barbeque sauce and the ones I had recently gave me a tummy ache and were different. Had a good salad on my last visit and my husband enjoyed his chicken.

Came for breakfast on Sunday around 9:30. Place was totally empty except for us, and our server wasn't in a great mood (can't blame her, no tables and not the best atmosphere). Breakfast was completely generic, nothing special but also not horrible. Didn't seem like the best quality food, and breakfast is obviously not their speciality. My Bloody Mary was horrible though - tasted like 50% horseradish. I have no idea what their bbq is like, or how the restaurant is for lunch/dinner but I'll never know bc this experience was enough for me.

Ok, where to start. Well, to begin, this is the first review I've been inclined to write since I signed up for Yelp about 3 years ago. This is the only time so far I've felt the need to vent! I'm a vegetarian. Yes, I'm reviewing a BBQ place as a vegetarian. My boyfriend loves meat, I'm into veggies. We've been going to Up In Smoke a lot since we moved back to town, as they have delicious bbq for him, and vegan(!!) riblets for me (not to mention okra, mac n cheese, and garlic bread). We've gone for breakfasts, lunches and dinners, and have always been happy with the food. That being said, every other time we go we say we'll never come back. The last visit really solidified it. So if the food is good, why won't we go back? The atmosphere is weird. There's never anyone there, yet service is terrible. Breakfast biscuits served without butter or jelly, and food frequently served cold. One time we went, placed our orders, waited at least 15 minutes before the waiter let us know - "oh yeah, we don't actually have the vegan riblets today. But we've already put in your other orders.." So yeah, it was too late to cancel and go somewhere else (keep in mind this is like the only thing I can eat on the menu as an entree..). The last time was the kicker. I ordered the breakfast sandwich that comes with "choice of meat." I get the vegan riblet sandwich with egg and cheese. Again, after about 10 minutes, the waitress comes back and says that her boss requires an upcharge of "4 to 6 dollars" for the vegan riblets. 4 to 6? Really? First, you can't even tell me how much? Second, I guarantee those things are cheaper to buy and serve than meat (they are frozen. Up in Smoke probably just pops them in the microwave - sauce isn't even on top. Also, you can find boxes of these things for about $6 - not for just one!!). And third, the menu says choice of meat. And this is listed alongside everything else (for the same price!) in the build your own omelet section - how is this different? I'm hungry, so we say fine. Bring it. I'm clearly not pumped, but they make no attempt to appease us. The sandwich comes without cheese, which I have to request (she brings me one sad slice of American cheese on a plate), and they forget to bring parts of my boyfriend's meal, which comes out piece by piece. Oh yeah, this is what often happens, by the way. Don't expect to get served all at the same time. I want local businesses to succeed, but this restaurant really disappoints me consistently. Service is bad and the management will try to nickel and dime you. They clearly don't care about generating good will from repeat customers. We go there all the time, and get bizarre treatment often. We often say we'll never go back. This time it's true. The food just isn't worth it.

I would not recommend this place if you are looking for good bar-b-q. We were looking for a local place to eat and this was the closest bar-b-q near the downtown area so we decided to eat there. We were very disappointed for several reasons. First off, the place wasn't very busy which should have been a good indication. We were a party of four. I ordered the sausage and brisket combo For 15.00 I received 2 small over cooked linked and brisket that appears to be microwaved or in a steam pan for an extended amount of time. My wife ordered a half rack of baby back ribs which cost 18.00. The ribs were meaty but over cooked and tough. Baby back ribs should be tender and fall off the bone. Well, this wasn't the case. The other two meals were just as bad. The total bill was 80.00 and wasn't worth it. My suggestion is keep driving and go to either one of the commercial places or better yet, go to 4 Rivers. You can't go wrong there.

Was ok. Atmosphere was nice. Staff was very attentive. My daughter liked her hamburger which she asked me to mention. I thought the pulled pork was ok. Not terribly interesting and on the dry side. Cole slaw was ok and there were no beans served on side. The fries were definetly not interesting. Tasted very plain. This place has lots of opportunity to be awesome if the cook changed up a few things to flavor it up a bit.

I walked over from hotel. Early for dinner at 530pm, no cars on the lot. No customers in dinning room. I was sat in a booth. The seat was worn to the cloth, as most of the booths. Waiter told me he was the only person working . He was very polite . 3 meat combo was good. Sides tasted fresh . A few more customers arrived. Overall very good. Rest room was clean.

Two words for you: Food Poisoning. I ordered the baby back ribs and spent my entire evening in the bathroom. Never again.

Placed an order to go.. To say I was disappointed with the serving sizes would be an understatement. The sides were heavy grease pits to the point of one being garbage fodder on first inspection. The meats... Well, they were very dry... And after the two sample bites, were also gone... The only bright spot for my visit was the staff was attentive and friendly. Can't say I'll ever go back though... Save your money and go elsewhere.

We've come numerous times for lunch & dinner, but today was our first breakfast visit. I've sought barbecue for breakfast for some time now (Jim & Milt's doesn't offer it) and the menu here clinches it. I ordered the cowboy breakfast (see attached menu). Perfect. Meredith ordered the Carolina omelet and found it most tasty. The poor reviews puzzle me. We've come a dozen times or so, and not once have we had a less-than-good experience. We know this place is associated with canopy road and Jenny's lunchbox - and like those two as well.

Best BBQ I have had since I left Texas! Excellent food and great service! Stephanie was our server and she is great!! The food was tasty and matched what the menu said it was. The portions large and this place has a high level of authenticity in the food. I highly recommend this place to anyone who likes a great place for BBQ.

My husband got off work at lunchtime, so he offered to bring lunch home. Since Up In Smoke was nearby and I'd never tried them we chose this. Big. Mistake. I had the beef brisket platter. It comes with two sides and a choice of bread. I was so disappointed. I just can't even tell you how that meat was cooked. I know it should have been smoked and maybe at one time it was, but it was reheated (possibly more than once) they either held it in jus, microwaved it, sauteed it, or all of the above. Brisket should be so tender that if falls apart. This was so tough that I almost couldn't pull it apart with my hands. I wound up cutting it with a knife. For sides I chose sweet potato casserole (stringy and oddly seasoned) and fried okra which I requested extra crispy. It was a soggy mess. I wound up eating a bowl of cereal for lunch while the to-go food lay in the garbage. It's a shame that a restaurant so close to the husband's work is permanently off our list!

i love me some bbq! so, since we were in Tallahassee, and had just picked up hungry friends from the airport, we figured we'd hit this local spot. i usually order a plate of ribs when i hit a bbq spot so this was no exception. i got the baby back ribs. they serve them dry here but have a few sauces available at the table. if i recall, there were 4 options- vinegar based, mustard based, spicy and regular (sweet). the spicy and regular were my favorites. but the others werent bad. Jill had the pulled pork sandwich- with some bbq sauce on it, it was pretty good.

If you're a fan of cold food and poor service then Up In Smoke Pit Bar-B-Q is for you. We've been to this place at least 3 times now - the first two visits left us with a "meh" kind of feeling but the last visit was the absolute worst and will be the last. I knew things weren't going to go well from the moment we entered the door and the hostess sat us down at our table and said that "our waiter would be...I'm not sure." and walked away. Then we were left alone for 5 minutes before the same hostess came back and introduced herself to us (as if not meeting us a few moments ago) and took our order. I ended up ordering the sliced pork platter with mexican corn and sweet potato casserole. My girlfriend order the nachos and her mother ordered a similar plate to my own. The platter was $11 each with the two sides and the nachos were $8. When the food came out, it was apparent that it was sitting around forever as everything tasted cold. In addition, the sliced pork was tasteless and the sweet potato casserole was just alright. Further, the mexican corn was the saddest food item I've seen and eaten in a long time. There were exactly 3 shreds of cheese on top, no spices whatsoever, and it tasted of mush as if it had been sitting in luke warm water for hours. It's clear that Up In Smoke Pit Bar-B-Q is not doing well. The place had a decent amount of people but not enough for a Friday night when most places are overflowing. This must be known by management as well when there's limited and unskilled wait staff on a Friday night and the quality of food has only continued to diminish. I'd be surprised if this place lasts much longer.

The food was gross. There, I said it. I got the sliced pork, baked beans, and mac and cheese. The pork looked good, but managed to be both soggy and tasteless. They should have given me a steak knife, because the one I had wasn't cutting it. The baked beans were meh. The mac and cheese was pretty good, except they sprinkle pretzel crumbs on it, which - let's just say - do not add to the experience. I am a big man. I like to eat. I have tried pretty much every bbq joint in this town. Hands down the worst. I ate a slice of the pork and didn't see any point to finishing the rest of the plate. Do you hear what I'm saying? It wasn't worth taking my leftovers home, and I am not a man to even have leftovers. I did eat all the mac and cheese and mystery crumbs. The service was fine.

Unfortunately, can not recommend this place. Visited with my brother while on business in Tallahassee. The BBQ, while using a dry rub which is my personal preference, was quite bland. The sauce (there were 4 on the table) were terrible. Sides (I had mac and cheese and cole slaw) were also not memorable. Sad to say, I'd much rather eat at a Sonny's bbq chain place than Up in Smoke. I doubt this restaurant will be around long term with the food this poor quality. The parking lot is quite small (on an akward corner near the intersection of Tennessee and North Monroe downtown). On a positive note, our server was very polite and the food came out quickly.

Disappointed. Had grit cake with pulled pork special. Grit cake was tasteless and greasy. Pork was okay but stringy and not tender. Coleslaw was great. Collards were horrible! So sweet I couldn't eat them so waitress brought tough chewy tasteless green beans. As I said, disappointing.

Been here twice just because there is no good BBQ close to the FSU campus! Jim an Meltz doesn't even have pulled pork! I liked the pulled pork here but the sides were horrible! I got beans and sweet potato casserole and both were bad! The beans tasted like chili. I hated them and I usually lol BBQ beans. The casserole was like pudding with what tasted like a ton of sugar in it which I didn't like. The second time I got onion rings which were not good as well. I would go back yes! But try some more sides lol

Well - Up In Smoke is officially on the ban list. I've been back a couple of times since my last review and it's been pretty decent. Nothing to rave about, but an okay option for barbecue in Tallahassee. However, my visit this weekend was so absolutely horrid that I've been reliving it in the days since and have to vent on Yelp. Ever have that moment when the waitress puts the food down and you look at your companions and seem to be telepathically communicating "are they serious?" Well, my party and I had that this weekend. We went in good faith, ignored the odd wait service and the awkward seating, only to be rewarded with disappointing platefuls. The plates were so unappetizing, so ridiculous in serving size and obvious quality of food that my first instinct was to run very far away. And upon tasting the food, my party and I should have done just that. Once again I got the nachos (that I have liked on previous visits). The nachos came missing ingredients, namely the guacamole, salsa, and cilantro. But upon looking at the generally sad state of all of our plates, I decided against asking for it (if an $11 sliced pork plate has four cold slices of pork with some sad sides I definitely did not want to eat the likely days old guacamole hiding out in the back). I persevered in eating the nachos - mainly because I am obsessed with nachos in general -- only to be greeted with huge chunks of cold pulled pork and a water-like cheese sauce that tasted like... skunky beer... mold.. blue cheese... all of the above? The stomach distress I had that evening could have likely been from something else, but the nachos from hell certainly did not help and were decidedly not delicious. Save yourselves - find another barbecue option in town as this one seems beyond hope.

A pleasant surprise. The price is right, the meat is good, and the place is clean and friendly. What more could you ask for from a barbecue restaurant. Please note I used the word "restaurant." This is NOT a barbecue shack, roadside stand, or backwater BBQ dive. That's a neutral statement. Both have their purposes. I personally believe the meat at these sit-down family friendly places will never be as good as that as the small sweat-of-your brow places where the owner slings the meat and takes the cash too. Even so, I was really surprised at how good the meat was. My pulled pork sandwich, one of their more basic options, was both tender and delicious. The sauces smelled a bit different at first whiff, but after using them I found the sweet and mustard to be very delicious, and the regular was better than most place's "regular." My sandwich was around $7 and I had the choice of garlic toast or a bun. Chose the toast, and would recommend you try it too. Closer to the BBQ bread we used to eat at home. On the side, there was a variety of choices (sweet potato fries, veggies, etc.) but it was a no-brainer for me to choose regular fries. What a great decision! They were probably the best fries I've had accompany a BBQ sandwich (these places usually don't give enough attention to their sides) and the portion was VERY generous for the price. They were just your basic fry, but well done - crisp and salty. Yum! Coke products and a decent cup of sweet tea are available. Service was very friendly and efficient enough. I was surprised by how slow it was during our weekend visit to the downtown area, but perhaps that is merely because it WAS a weekend and this place caters mainly to the many office workers down town? I really have nothing bad to say about Up in Smoke. Well, except the fake smoke billowing out of the sign is, I believe, a signal to the world that you are a cheesy corporate barbecue restaurant. I'm glad it turned out not to be true! The most impressive thing to me about Up in Smoke was the prices. It's not everywhere that $7 gets you a generous portion of pulled pork on a bun AND a pile of fries it would take two hands to pick up. - Don't do that though, they come out piping hot and you'll burn yourself!

Average food. Our meal was lukewarm at best, and was officially cold within five minutes. The waitress was no where to be found either for a good 20 mins.

The chili tasted like barbecue sauce, the fries were stale/old, and the food looked overall old. I wouldn't go back nor would I recommend it to anyone else. However our server was very kind, and the service was okay.

This place was disgusting, from the parking lot to the food. For starters, it took 10 minutes for us to be seated when the place was practically empty. We get to the table and order a fruit punch and water, the water seemed very unhealthy to drink, as it had a metallic, horrible aftertaste. It was on some bullshit! Then we got our food. The BLT was okay, but the fried okrah was soggy. Still riding on the bullshit at this point. But the part that is the most on the mother fucking bullshit wave during this visit to ^ in smoke was my pulled pork sandwich. Some pieces I couldn't even chew, let alone swallow. Jim n Milts over this shit hole any day. PEACE.

Let's start with the bacon bites. What is not to love about thick slices of bacon, battered and fried, served with real cane syrup?? If it is burned (charred), it's not good. We sent the order back. Our waitress was very nice about it and agreed that it did not look appetizing at all. A few minutes later, delight on a plate was delivered!! The bacon was just right, the batter light and the syrup- wonderful. This would be a great dessert. I had the ribs on the advice of fellow yelpers and they were grand! Moist, flavorful rub with just the right hint of smokiness. The fried okra was good but a tad salty. I could do without the pretzel topped Mac and cheese. Cheese loving hubby said there was too much cheese. I just didn't care for it. Hubby had ribs, pulled pork and The brisket. The brisket was dry but had a good flavor. It just needed to be juicier and that is hard to do for a crowd. His pulled pork was good. He also had the mexican corn which was a half ear, cooked and grilled with a spicy flavor I could not identify. It was then sprinkled with Parmesan cheese. Up in Smoke has a good looking breakfast menu and I want to try that. Overall, the meal was good but not outstanding. My favorite sauce was the regular. The sweet tasted a bit off and the hot was just not barbecue-y enough. The mustard was good if you are into that abomination of barbecue! ;-) Our service was wonderful and the house wine was good- with 2 for 1 specials all day. So, why only 3 stars?? I liked it and I'll go again- but I'll try different sides next time.

Let's give a good barbecue joint the respect it deserves! You go there not for fine dining, not to see and be seen. By definition, the barbecue joint is simpy a place to eat smoked meat. I was very satisfied with my meal after a recent lunch visit. I had the Angus brisket sandwich with onion rings. The brisket had that smoky flavor and soft slow-cooked beef texture that I love. The sauce that I squirted on it was also tasty, sweet and tart. It was delicious. My son had pulled pork nachos, which came out in a tray big enough to feed a frat house party, huge. He liked them and saved half to eat another day. My wife had the pulled pork sandwich, and really liked it. But I'm the barbecue authority in my family. There is no doubt that this is authentic, smoked in the pit meat being served here!

Let me begin by saying this place has potential. The server was friendly and kept my drink full (a must). The sweet potato fries are out of this world. I have to complaints: 1. The floor is very slippery, it needs some texture. 2. The parking lot is an accident waiting to happen~ if it hasn't already.

  • Allison C.

I also ate there on opening night and had a wonderful meal. You MUST try the onion rings and the pies. Both are handmade by the owner's mother. To die for. Give this place a chance to work out the kinks - they just opened, for crying out loud! Tallahassee needs more successful locally-owned business, not more chain restaurants. Good luck fellas!

  • Chris C.

Very much worth a visit. Meat was done well. Variety of sauces to choose from, all of which were quite sweet but good. Beans and fried okra were also good. Overall, good Q joint for FL.

  • Robert L.

Not bad, but not outstanding either. Tallahassee, for being a southern city, has a dearth of good barbecue. Up in Smoke provides good meat, juicy and tender, but the sides are all pretty mediocre. For my money, it's worth the drive to Thomasville if you're looking for outstanding bbq

  • A A.

Came in for that awesome buttermilk pie again, and they served me POUND CAKE IN A PIE CRUST. The words to express my rage are laced with too many profanities for Yelp. So yep, now the only thing worth coming here for is as equally horrific as the rest of their food.

  • Shiloh E.

I know others have said some pretty negative things about this place, but I didn't have a negative experience at all. Yes, its the first week so you have to go in knowing that. The wait staff is a little inexperienced, but my waitress was friendly, prompt, and knowledgeable. I'd rate the food a 7 out of 10. Was it as good as one of those roadside places where things are cooked my an old man in overalls round the clock? No. But it was definitely as good if not better than other chain BBQ places as well as a few of the local ones. The meat was a little dry, but had good flavor from whatever dry rub they use. The sauces were really tastey and had the tell tale flavors of being made in house. I think a few things need to be tweaked, but it is in its first week so I'm sure the kinks will be worked out in time. I will definitely go back again.

  • Kenneth M.

I was pleasantly surprised by this place. A few different twists on normal BBQ. It's hard for any BBQ place to compete with Sonny's in Tallahassee, not to mention our MANY roadside BBQ shacks, but Up In Smoke does a good enough job. It is also in a good location. I ate the brunswick stew which wasn't bad only missing chicken, which I'm used to eating in B-stew. I mistakingly ordered garlic bread instead of their FANTASTIC cornbread-a mistake I'll never make again. Their sauces are superior to any other BBQ places in town. You should definitely give this place a try!

Started with the BBQ chicken nachos and they were awesome. Lots of meat and generous, fresh toppings. Tasted the pulled pork, brisket, and smoked sausage. I liked the pork best, but it needed better smoke flavor. The brisket was very dry and the sausage burnt to charcoal on one side. Side dishes were generous and well-prepared. The sauces were ok, but nothing to rave about. The portions were very generous and we left with three boxes of food to take home.

  • Sid S.

Decent bbq for the price. I was expecting to eat some run of the mill bbq that is typical of restaurant chains. But, I was pleasantly surprised by tenderness of the pulled pork sandwich. The choice of bbq sauces is also par. The buttermilk cake (or something like that) was a big disappointment - it came cold and hard; and when I asked for it to be warmed up, it was heated up in a microwave and that killed the taste for me.

The spinach salad was to die for. Service was a little slow for it to be so empty. I was not impressed with the sauce selection. Piggys still reigns #1 for Tallahassee BBQ

Having read some not-so-good reviews of Up in Smoke after it first opened I never bothered to pay it a visit. Their decision to offer a Groupon recently finally enticed me into taking the family there for dinner. I have to say that we really liked Up in Smoke! I had the 3 meat combo - brisket, pulled pork and ribs. The brisket and pulled pork were very good and the ribs were outstanding. The service was also prompt and pleasant. Up in Smoke joins Piggy's as one of my two favorite Tallahassee BBQ joints. Piggy's still gets the nod for the best brisket in town, but it's close. I'd say that the pulled pork is comparable at both places, and Up in Smoke's ribs edge out Piggy's. I'll definitely be back.

We were greeted right away and seated immediately. The decor is okay, your average BBQ place. Service was friendly and I liked the TVs inside. It took a little bit longer than normal to get our basic food but it wasnt too long. My friends were only decent. 6 out of 10. But my BBQ burger was great, I would give it a 8.5 out of 10. Overall, I'd give this place an 8 out of 10.

As a fan of authentic BBQ, I was very excited when I heard this place was opening. I'm far less excited now that I've tried it. The atmosphere inside was okay--definite improvement over the previous restaurant located in this building. The parking lot is an absolute disaster. Small parking spaces, not many of them, and it is very tough to traverse through the lot. I'm frankly baffled the owners chose this location rather than the empty building across the street or any number of other options within a mile or two. I read reviews suggesting the Brisket was dry. That didn't concern me when I read the review. I've had Texas-style brisket at many places in Texas and the fact is that authentic Texas-style BBQ brisket IS dry. It's just not as fatty as the pork BBQ popular in other regions. Many people compensate for this by adding liquid to the cooking process, but they certainly do not do that in Texas. I'm not sure if Up In Smoke is doing that, but they definitely overcooked the beef. The odd thing is it had very little smoke flavor. I don't know if they left in a warmer for too long (or at too hot a temp), but I suspect they cooked the beef at too high a temperature and ended up cooking it through before the meat could absorb much smoke flavor. Big disappointment. The pulled pork, on the other hand, was very good. It only had a mild smoke flavor, but it was not overcooked like the brisket was. Some of the sauces were okay, but I found them all to be too sweet for my pallet and much sweeter than typical BBQ sauce. The mustard-based sauce, for example, was very sweet and nothing like the Carolina mustard sauce I'm familiar with. I had the mac and cheese and coleslaw as sides. The mac and cheese was average, but the coleslaw was runny and the cabbage was soggy. They need to alter their recipe so they can make the slaw in batches without the quality deteriorating before it is served. I give it two stars for now, but with some adjustments to the cooking process and recipes they could move to a three or four star place. I hope they do, because Tallahassee does not have many options for authentic BBQ at a sit down restaurant.
