This is not a place to go if you want healthful or vegetarian food. I ordered the fried vegetables (green beans and carrots). They came dripping in oil. I assumed it was the classy herbed olive oil which is dripped on the Smashfries. When I inquired at the counter, I learned that the vegetables like the potato and sweet-potato fries are cooked in canola oil and-- "beef tallow" (beef fat)! They don't warn you. Beef fat is much cheaper than olive oil. They have plenty of it from frying burgers. McDonald's stopped frying with beef fat years ago after many complaints about clogging the arteries of so tens of millions of Americans. Micky D advertises now they use 100 per cent olive oil. Cooking potatoes in beef fat is one thing, but vegetable fries? The corporation, in its defense, does provide a black bean burger. It may be free of animal fat. I didn't ask. A grilled portobello would be a great meat substitute, but there is none. I had read they serve it, but this store doesn't. The menu offers several salads for $6 with varied ingredients including but and seeds. That may be the way to go to avoid a heart attack. So I leave with the impression that this purported gourmet place is just a greasy burger joint.

Smashburger is a great example of a successful burger chain. The reason they are successful is because they are great at what they do. What they do is make great burgers, milkshakes, and fries. They have a great atmosphere for all ages and they also have great deals and prices. Perfect lunch spot. I've been looking for a great burger place and I just found one.

Alas! Smashburger hit the ground running as today marked their grand opening. Us Tallahassee locals are spoiled with our abundantly endless burger scene, but if I do say so myself, Smashburger will be welcomed with open arms. Smashburger went all out on opening day. Outside the storefront, a DJ playing radio-friendly hits, decorative balloons and even a mini red carpet filled the space. A general manager greeted me at the door and handed me a menu. Touché. As I proceeded to the register I was greeted by yet, another general manager. Double touché. So, here's the process. You order a relatively inexpensive burger. I decided on the Smashburger. For my first experience I want the self-titled special to make my first inquisitions. Which led me to my next move. Smash fries. D-Lish. The burger comes dressed fairly simple, just like your run of the mill all-American burger. The buns are super soft and the cheese is melted rather well. All your essential flavor profiles are here. The Smash fries are jazzed up with rosemary and olive oil. It's hard to go wrong with shoestring fries, but Smashburger takes them above and behind with the extra fresh components. What else? Oh, I neglected to mention Smashburger serves Haagen-Dazs milkshakes! You're talking to a kid who's family owned a Haagen-Dazs store for nearly two decades. All milkshakes are an instant win in my eyes, but you've never had one as rewarding as these. It's quite a self-indulgent pairing, bringing back the nostalgic 1950's/diner atmosphere. Smashburger is going to be an instant success. The two general managers on hand seemed to be on their A game; running food and greeting customers like their lives depended on it. They were overly prepared with ample employees on staff. The layout of the store will maximize their effectiveness. Although, it's very comparable to BurgerFi, Smashburger brings a unique style that'll cater to Tallahassee. I could've written a more condensed review, one that merely stated, "That's a tasty burger." But they treated me so warmly; I wanted to return the favor.

I was disappointed with my first visit to smash burger. There was a rainstorm so the power went out and it appeared the back up system tried several times to come on but was unsuccessful. It didn't dampen the experience too much as it was light enough outside and we still just managed to get our food. The employees seemed to remain busy despite the power outage. The food was good, although the patties were the flat kind like Wendy's. The kicker for me was there were a couple people with huge stacks of coupons, handing them out for the inconvenience but seemed to be doing so selectively. I wasn't sure why we weren't selected since they tossed out 5 per table for the other folks. Hrmm...

Disclosure: I was invited to a pre-opening media event and this review is a result of that experience. An easy five stars as it was a very well run event under a controlled setting. I will provide a follow-up review after an actual visit when they are officially open. Thanks to the event, I was able to sample eight different sandwiches that they offer, 3 different sides and two shakes. All were very good. I'll provide a quick rundown of what I was able to sample. Sandwiches: Classic Smash Burger - a standard burger with American cheese. the egg buns they use are very soft and yummy. If they had a double patty option, I would think I would order it for all their burgers to being out more of the beef flavor. BBQ Bacon and Cheddar Burger - Again, very typical burger at a restaurant, but untypical of "fast food". Liked the haystack onions piled on top. Truffle Mushroom Swiss Burger - A slight hint of truffle oil in the mayo. They use crimini mushrooms, which is a step up from typical white button. Had good flavor and the truffle didn't overpower the burger at all. Regional Burger (Named the Panhandle Burger, I believe) - This had fried green tomatoes on it - and had the most flavor from what I was presented in the way of the beef options. They seasoned this one a little more than the others on this day. Avocado Ranch Black Bean Burger - I don't do veggie burgers too often but could eat this. The bean patty is quite soft and could use a little tightening up for texture, but the flavor was good. Spinach, Cucumber and Goat Cheese Chicken - Their chicken if cut / pounded VERY thin to match the thickness of their burger. All in all, this was a really tasty sandwich - reminded me of a greek salad, minus the olives. I would eat this anytime. Buffalo & Blue Cheese Crispy Chicken - Typically a winner in my book, the wing sauce, which they stated was Franks, was a little tart in an off way for me. Not sure what they mix the wing sauce with for the sandwich, but probably my least favorite due to the sauce's mix. Sides: Smash Fries: Shoestring fries with olive oil and rosemary. Pretty good! Sweet Potato Fries: typically not my favorite fry, but these were crispy and soft in the middle. Fried Pickles: By far, the best side item I had at this event. Well seasoned, briney and crispy. A definite win. Shakes: Salted Caramel: Very sweet shake, but the flavors were all there. Oreo: Less sweet and loaded with cookie. Was good, but not the best shake I have had with this flavor combination. Hope this helps you get started as they open. Again, once I visit there under regular conditions, I will update this review.

Very friendly and attentive staff. Burgers OK, but not noteworthy. Choice of toppings was large. The buffalo/hot wing spiced fries were over salted. The most annoying part was a couple of flys that would not leave our food alone ... This was while eating inside.

A classic from back home, but they ALWAYS forget the side of smash sauce. The cashier doesn't enter it on the grill slip, so no one ever knows to put it in the bag. Good food otherwise, but the staff slips on the little things.

The hamburger was excellent, thick and beefy with great crust and a good bun. If that were all I was rating I'd probably give it five stars. The fries were alright, very similar to Steak n Shake (cut thin and way under-salted). The onion strings were thin and perfectly cooked but unfortunately they were also coated in a noxious seasoning that tasted like cheap chicken bullion. It's a very good burger, not as good as BurgerFi but much better that Five Guys. By the way, who in the hell decided that upscale burgers have to come with leaf lettuce? Leaf lettuce sucks! It's wet, slimy, and tasteless. Plain old iceberg, while also tasteless, is crisp and perfect on a burger.

Excellent salads, fries, and shakes. Burgers are just so so, but I'm usually looking for a salad anyway. I've tried the spinach and goat cheese, Cobb, and Baja Cobb salads. I prefer them to Newk's and Grub's salads. Generous portions. I always add grilled chicken--delish. Fries are skinny. I like the Smashburger flavor but plain are good too, if you like skinny fries. Shakes are made with Haagen Dazs, again better than Grub's IMO.

Fresh, fast, and delicious. The fried chicken sandwich was a very lightly breaded, crispy, and not at all greasy. The piece of chicken was big enough to fit on two buns. The olive oil and Rosemary skinny fries were excellent, too. My son's salad looked great and the girls had burgers. Everyone really enjoyed their meal. The one star was lost on the milk shakes. Will definitely go back, but probably skip dessert.

Well, I don't know. My last burger was just fine. My wife, however, ordered a veggie burger. It came almost immediately, and the next day she was sick. Had it been sitting around too long? (Veggie burgers may not be fast movers.) Was it cause and effect? Maybe so, maybe not, but she says she's never going back. Playing it safe. Other than that, the service was quick and pleasant. I could do with less music, but I'm old and when I get deafer it won't bother me as much. One time the fries were really good, the next time not so. Maybe we got used to them. Give the place a try, I say, and if it doesn't make you sick, keep going back.

Absolutely loved both experiences (private and public) that I had at Smashburger this past week. There is a ton of variety in the menu and everything was so flavorful - a nice middle ground from your traditional burger joint in town. The options are eclectic enough to let you step out of your comfort zone of a regular cheeseburger, but simple enough that they aren't intimidating. Considering that all burgers are made with fresh meat and to order the staff did an excellent job of cranking out the orders (even on such a crazy Friday night in its first week of opening). The milkshake team was also on point - I had my peanut butter and jelly milkshake (holy amazing) within 3 minutes of placing my order. Everything about the food here has just that extra bit that makes Smashburger worth visiting. The rosemary and olive oil "smashfries" are amazing and a refreshing step above your regular salt. My personal favorite burger is the classic burger because you are able to fully appreciate the flavor and juiciness of the burger with the crispness of the fresh veggies. The Panhandle is a close second. That was my first experience trying fried green tomatoes and I was not disappointed. There's also a very delectable and creamy sauce that adds another layer to the experience. Also it's just really cool that they make a burger that is only available in this region! All of the workers were very friendly and accommodating. You could also see David and Kerry (the stores owner's) walking around delivering orders and interacting with guests the entire time - awesome to see. I highly recommend Smashburger to anyone in town who loves great burgers and great service.

Two words: veggie frites! I'm not a burger person at all. Let alone burgers from a chain. But I heard good things about Smash Burger's truffle mushroom Swiss burger so I decided to give it a shot when I got a coupon in the mail. Fun fact, they don't take orders over the phone so you have to either order online or in person. And the coupon says it's not valid for online orders so the only option is to go into the store and order to-go. Alright alright I'll jump the hoop b/c I'm determined to use this coupon. It was not busy on a Saturday around noon so my ordering experience was painless. I got my regular truffle mushroom Swiss burger and a side of veggie frites. The burger is on the small side. The mushroom flavor was nice but it didn't amaze me. The veggie frites are pretty awesome I have to say! They look oily but don't taste greasy at all. The string beans and carrots are fried just right and they taste crispy and delish. I don't mind getting the veggie frites again. Overall an average burger joint. I'd say Grub deff wins the game in the neighborhood. I'll go there if I ever want a burger in my hood. However, my fav in town so far is mid-town caboose!

If I could give zero stars, I would. My parents came into town and we were all excited to try it. First of all, it's EXTREMELY expensive. Secondly, I could have made better food with frozen meat. While still ordering my dad changed his mind and wanted parmesan fries. The girl explained that he couldn't because she had "already sent the order back" We hadn't even paid yet. So I ordered and changed my mind right away so my dad could try the other fries and I received the same response. How is it that you can order and within 30 seconds not be able to change something BEFORE you pay? The food was crap, it was way too expensive and the cashiers, well, I'm not sure what to say. Fail.

This is a nice looking steak and shake. First let's start all burgers are well done. Anthony Bourdain, "any place that refuses to sell you a burger under medium temperature is basically is on the side if the terrorist"..."throw it on the floor" Location gets B fair amount of shopping for Tally and easy to get to. Ambiance gets a C. It's like a Chipotle pretty much, and the funnel line to the cash register could be more open. Service gets a D it's average fast food. If you want a drink, napkins, or knife go get it yourself. But the register workers and food runners are fine. Food gets an F. It may as well be McDonald's. Infact I think I've had better food at McDonald's. The patties are super thin, like steak n shake, and the fries are the same as well. I can't even order anything but well done burger, and then they smash all the juice out. Tried a chicken too, if you want something that resembles a chicken breast forget it. Chicken sandwiches are thin, and not juicy. And forget the one leaf of lettuce and the onion that was a whole slice, like all the rings 15 rings in one slice, just give me three Rings or so. Go to an American diner you can get the same thing for half the price. Bar Service. Didn't see any, burger and beer? Go else where. So overall it gets a D if you want a good burger go else where! maybe five guys or maybe burgerfi at least they don't press all the juices out if their meat. Or spend almost the same and get an awesome beef or even bison burger from Ted's

Top quality burger and buns. Today we tried the truffle mushroom and Swiss. A really fantastic burger. My preference is for a thicker cut french fry, but their shoestrings are tasty. I also dug the flash fried green bean and carrot side. I must say the speed at which my food was delivered was truly "fast food." Next time I will try their panhandle burger with pimento cheese and a fried green tomato!

We waited for the furor to die down before we went to try Smashburger. We usually hit these places on a Thursday or Friday around three or four when there is no crowd. My ability to digest beef is iffy on good days, so I have to pick my donnybrooks and I usually prefer to eat BurgerFi or Five Guys plain. I ordered a plain regular Smashburger, while my guy got the classic Smash sans cheese and an order of fries. Our order took a while to come up, and we were the only people in the entire restaurant. The burgers were fresh and hot, as were the fries. I took my time and ate very slowly while my guy wolfed his down like a malnourished werewolf. He loved every bite. My burger was all right, but it did not sit as well or taste as good as the BurgerFi or Five Guys burger. The meat appears to have more fat in it, along with some other ingredients. What may have us coming back are the other menu options, which include a spinach and goat cheese salad that is right up my (non-cow-dairy) alley, chicken sandwich options for my poultry-loving lifemate, and the veggie fries and side salad options. Staff were pleasant, the store was clean, tables were clean and there was plenty of room for a crowd. We need to try this a few more times.

I've been looking forward to my first visit since they opened a few weeks ago. I always try and avoid the mad rush that happens right when a new joint comes to town. As a burger lover, I'm am absolutely stoked by all of the options arriving on the scene. I'll start by saying that SmashBurger has a beautiful menu, with upscale selections. It reminds me a little of the menu at Vertigo, one of the real stars in the local burger scene. I went with the Truffle Mushroom Swiss burger. It has nice flavor, but was a bit over-cooked and dry. A little more pink in the middle and it would have probably been a home run. My wife had the Avocado Club burger. Again, flavorful but not anything special. Perhaps it's the "smash" technique, but I prefer a burger that's a little less done. We'll give another try at some point, but with all of the new options popping up SmashBurger will have be a little better next time to make me a regular.

When I saw that Smashburger was opening, I was very excited. I'm a big fan of Five Guys (which is right across the street) for their great value and many options for customizing your burger, but I was excited for a new burger joint! Upon walking in, the line was wrapped around the dining area from the registers back to the front door. While this is a new restaurant and large crowds were expected, they only had one employee taking orders at the register, while many other employees stood around talking to each other and the second register sat unused. Heard many customers in line making comments about "how can there be so many people doing nothing and still nobody else can take orders?" As far as the food goes, my friend and I both ordered the "big" classic smash burger and shared an order of smash fries. When our food came, my burger was rather small, barely hanging over the edge of the bun while my friend's burger was much thicker and hung about half an inch over the bun all around. Noticing this, I flagged down one of their food runner and asked for her opinion who said that "anytime the burger hangs over the edge of the bun even a little bit, it' is a large, it is done by weight". They can say whatever they want but these clearly were not the same weight, I am pretty sure they gave me the small by accident. In addition, the fries were extremely greasy and the "olive oil, rosemary, and garlic" flavor was nearly unrecognizable. All in all, I'm not going to say it was absolutely horrible, I do enjoy a burger and the flavor of the burger was good. The issue here, to me, is that there is nothing that sets it apart from any of the other many burger places around. Smashburger is merely mediocre and nothing more. Just as some people dislike Five Guys and love BurgerFi (I'm not a fan of BurgerFi either), I'm sure Smashburger will certainly have it's supporters over the several other burger joints in the area. I just won't be one of them.

Umm...this place is a total fail. First of all, it's expensive for what you get. My family of 3 can go to 5 Guys and get way better burgers and split one order of fries for about $8 less. More on the fries in a bit. So obviously as the name says, the burger comes smashed all to heck. It's cooked completely through, and well done doesn't begin to describe it. The egg bun I had was decent, but nothing special. It's $1.29 extra for grilled mushrooms, and they always want to put "smash sauce" on everything, which is a genius concoction...oh wait...it's ketchup, mustard, and mayo mixed together. Way to go. The fries are an insult to America. They literally ARE French Fries, because they arrive to your table with a white flag signaling that they've given up. They're exactly like Steak and Shake fries...minus the cheese sauce (which means auto-fail). When I order a large fry from 5 Guys, I get a motherload of fries. I get enough fries to feed a fraternity house that just smoked medical grade marijuana. The "large fry" I ordered from Smash was also $3.00 I believe. Doing...it...wrong. And don't bother with the "smash fries" either. They sounded divine, as they come with rosemary, garlic, and other spices...but they were underwhelming. And the service? Meh...I've had better. I called them from the road and asked to place a pick up order, but the schmuck that answered said I wasn't allowed to place a phone order, and I had to use the website. How the heck am I supposed to use the website when I'm freaking DRIVING? So I had to stop at the gas station anyway, and while there I used the website to order. I get all the way through my order, and it won't let me proceed to check out. I kept getting a "we don't have large create your own burger, please remove your order and add something else." Well, when I did, the site kept freezing up and kicked me from the website. What a joke. I wanted to go to 5 Guys, but my wife really wanted to try this dump, so I went there and ordered. To be fair, the staff was friendly, and gave me the "that's weird, everyone loves the website" response. The food was cooked extremely fast, which was nice. The biggest issue is, the food isn't good, and it's not really a good effort. 5 Guys, Burger Fi, Bird's Oyster Shack...all much better. Oh, and you can call them to place an order.
