This place is delicious, a complete hole-in-the-wall thats cash only but definitely worth the visit. My favorite are the fried oysters with cole slaw and beans. The sides are just as good as the seafood, just make sure you've got bills in your wallet.

A small, basic building with a lot of history behind it. Come early as parking is a challenge and bring cash, as they take no other forms of payment. Details aside, the food is extremely reasonable and quantities are large for the price. I have not tried everything, but I have had their raw oysters and many of their fried items (which is the majority of the menu). The fried items can't be cooked any better. The seafood is cooked to perfection and the oil must be changed frequently as the breading is always light in color and clean tasting. Their cocktail sauce seems to be their own blend / recipe (though not confirmed) and it is delicious. This is a must-try establishment is you ave never been before.

We love this place! Best fried shrimp in Tallahassee! The service is always great. Nice friendly faces! Thanks!

Good thing we had cash or we would have had to go to ATM - they don't accept debit or credit cards. Ordered our oysters steamed (for which they used a microwave). Oysters were pre-shucked and sitting on styrofoam plates before we came in. Saltines were stale, and if you request horse radish they will go to their fridge and pull out a slop bucket full for you to scoop some out with a spoon, before passing to the next customer. The onion rings were good though. Oh, and the beer we brought with us was to.... BYOB

I found this place on Yelp and we were surprised with the location of the restaurant and a little hesitated to go in. Since we were all hungry so we stayed and ordered food. My husband loves his grouper sandwich, my kids ordered crab claws and I ordered fried oyster with Cheese grits. We left with a smile on our face. Everyone enjoyed their food! There is no fancy decor in the restaurant and it opens till 5pm. We were glad we stayed. Cash only place! Nice people!

I'm back to Tallahassee and here I'm back to Shell again! My raw oysters weren't that good this time, only 2 out of 12 oyster were good. The homemade horseradish hot sauce, the pungent with the spicy heat of papers, on the table enhanced the flavors of good and not so good oysters (or should I say disguised the bad flavors). My lunch special, fried oysters and shrimps, were good as how I remembered. What shined was the sweet and soft meat shrimps with a crunch outside. They were delicious. Yellow grits with cheese were creamy and dreamy and American mustard flavored potato salad that I opted for my lunch special sides were always my favorite.

GREAT fresh oysters, shucked right in front of you by guys who know what they're doing. Friendly atmosphere, it's a very clean somewhat small place. Not much of an 'oyster bar odor'. We didn't sample fried food on this first visit, but the plates we saw going by from our seats at the oyster bar looked great to two Florida natives. We probably would have stayed longer, but they only accept cash, and we didn't have much. Its a bit pricier than Barnacle Bills, but the quality is probably worth it. And it's location near the gov't offices is a plus. Parking is more than a little tight, but if you look, you can find a spot. It'll be worth the effort.

It reminds me of house by the docks, but this little place has some of the freshest seafood in the Tallahassee area. The 3 of us shared a dozen of raw oysters, an enormous basket of seafood & chips, and a grouper sandwich. I really wanted to LOVE the oysters after all the raving reviews, but I'm assuming it just happened to be a bad batch. They looked absolutely mouth watering, but one slurp - chew - swallow left a really bitter taste on my palate. Truly disappointed, but the rest of our meal made up for that sour start. When the fish, crab claws, clams, and oysters were battered & fried over a bed of fries & hush puppies, that was a whole different story. It just brings out the freshness and sweetness of the seafood like it was just pulled up from the dock. That cup of iced sweet tea helped wash down all that fried goodness. Left fairly satisfied and full without hurting our wallets.

Southern small town atmosphere. Sweet tea was brewed just right. Hush puppies were on point, cole slaw was finely chopped, and the shrimp were perfectly to a golden crisp.

It was OK but not great. No frills cash only and adds up quick as they keep shuckin' away at you. My suggestion if you wanna go just get the fried oysters. We spent $46 for two for lunch ouch!

Simple and delicious. The raw oysters may be on the small side (as we then went to NOLA) but they were sweeter and smoother. They were $8.00/dz on Monday. My fried fish lunch was delicious and too much food. Oh maybe it was the dz oysters first. Very clean and a nice eclectic atmosphere with friendly service. The sweet tea was good, too.

I love this place! It smells like dead fish when you walk in (probably oyster shells). I upgraded the star rating because - they are legend in TLH. Friendly people. Dependable good food served in plastic baskets! A bit of old tallahassee on the half shell.

Every time I got to Tallahassee I have to stop at the Shell Oyster Bar. The best place in town to get seafood, and its not expensive at all. Its a good family owned business and the people who run it are the sweetest. My favorite part is how they shuck the oysters right in front of you.But if you go here make sure to try their own recipe of horseradish and other special sauces!

This is what a seafood place is meant to be! They have the best raw oysters in town (only $6.50/dozen i believe), great fried grouper and fried oyster sandwiches, and very friendly staff. Cash only and it can get crowded at lunchtime; this place is a Tallahassee institution and you owe it to yourself to eat here!

Coming from Los Angeles I would die if we had a place like this. The oysters are some of the best I have had. I think as I write this I need to order some of their sauce! Enjoy

This was a wonderful treat today. My husband already knew about this place because his workplace try's to go together once a quarter. He took me for a slightly late lunch at about 2. I was a bit hesitant as it is very modest walking in. However, when we had been seated I noticed how well all the staff seemed to mesh together. Our waitress Rainey was absolutely precious she made sure we had everything as soon as we asked. I haven't had service that good almost ever. I was shocked at how fast we got our food. I had the shrimp and fish with fries and cole slaw. My husband had scallops and crab claws with fries and cheese grits. All we're amazing. Next time I will probably skip the fish and fries and get shrimp and crab claws or scallops with cheese grits and cole slaw. The hush puppies were amazing!!! You will not be disappointed here but my understanding is that it is extremely busy during regular hours.

This is my first full year going here and I have to admit that I wrote my first review early in the oyster season. What I've found is that the size and quality of their oysters declined a bit as the season went on. I thought that this was probably a natural occurrence but found that other oyster places (especially Boss's - though they have an obvious locational advantage) did not have the same decline in quality, so I marked them down a star. Still can't beat the local's vibe, staff friendliness, and their side items --- though this cash-only place leaves little to offer if you aren't going for the oysters or fried seafood.

If you weren't looking for this place, you'd totally miss it. We sat at the bar, and when we ordered the oysters they just started shucking them right there. They don't give you a plate at the bar, just a big plastic tray where they put them as they shuck them. They make their own cocktail sauce, and put it in big jugs on the bar. They were some GOOD oysters, and I have NEVER seen oysters that inexpensive in my life - $6.50/dozen, are you kidding me?? They have other food too - sandwiches, fried plates, and they'll do the oysters some other ways as well. Boyfriend's sister had a crab cake lunch special - fried crab cakes, 2 sides, and hush puppies - that were outstanding. We had some extra hush puppies too - YUM. They don't sell alcohol, but you can bring your own. A dozen oysters gets you a Natty Light to go along though! As others have mentioned, bring your cash because they don't take anything else. It was pretty busy when we were there - 1pm on a Tuesday. Not a ton of parking, but some room on the street around. If you don't feel like driving to the coast for oysters, this will do!

We went there after cooking for the first ladies luncheon yesterday afternoon. It was wonderful! I ate 2 doz by myself! The homemade cocktail sauce was the best and they served fresh horseradish as well. We also had bay scallops which were so sweet......crab claws.......Cajun shrimp........fried shrimp.........garlic shrimp........... Amazing! I'd come back to Tallahassee again to eat here!

My son and Love this place. I am a North Florida girl - raised on local seafood - been eating it for more than 50 years. Shells is by far the best around. It is always fresh and cooked "just right." The staff take good care of you. They know their customers and give them what they came after, excellent food at a great value. I recommend this place to anyone who likes fresh local Florida seafood (which we all know is the best in the world). The place is simple, down home, and easy. No fuss, just really really good vittles.

Only been eating there since moby dick was a minnow. Guess the food has to be damn good for that kind of loyalty ! The oysters are great. The owner's son may be the best shucker in north Florida . I guess practice makes perfect. The fried dishes are all fresh and cooked by the owner himself. Go try Tallahassee's own diner drive in and dive place and enjoy a great lunch experience. Just wish they would open in the evening. Keep shucking guys! Also they are big fsu fans so get ready to listen.

Wonderful. It looked so sketchy on the outside and I was a little bit wary because of some of the other oyster bars I've been to before, but we stepped inside everything was clean and homey. The shrimp and oyster lunch specials were delicious and the portion sizes were really big for the price. The oysters were huge compared to the ones you normally get in Tallahassee, but they were a little too salty. We got oysters from the local seafood market the day after and found them to be even saltier so I'm guessing it's just because they're not in season. The waitress was super friendly and fast, we barely even ordered and our food was already there! In all honestly we came feeling like confused strangers and left feeling like family. Great hidden gem of Tallahassee.

If you want a free glass of tap water with an $8 lunch DON'T GO TO SHELLS SEAFOOD RESTAURANT....You are allowed free tea with the lunch, but the owner informed me that free tap water instead was not an option. The owner was very rude and completely unreasonable. Wanted to give us free tea, or sell us a bottled water for $1.38 or for $0.50 more you could get a soda instead of tea, but you can not substitute tap water for the free tea. We left without eating. Apparently the owner doesn't care about customer service or principle, so we will not be eating there. There are plenty of places in Tallahassee that have better food and service.

I wish more restaurants followed this template. They have a very limited menu, and and everything on it is cooked to perfection. Absolutely fresh seafood, and if you get it fried the oil is always pristine. My only complaint (a minor one) is the hush puppies. They're invariably cold and unworthy of the rest of their wonderful food. Keep the damned thing and give me a couple more french fries!

A Great surprise! Had read good reviews and when we arrived the location and outdoor appearance made me question it. But once inside it was clean, simple and oh so good! Fresh and best oysters, excellent cocktail sauce they say is an old family recipe. Very friendly staff. Bring your own beer (wish I had known that before I got there) as they don't sell it. But they will give you one with an order of a dozen oysters. Go, you won't be disappointed.

Great destination for fried seafood. We had the shrimp, scallops, crab claws and oysters, and each one was cooked to perfection. The french fries were also cooked perfectly. The coleslaw was a a little runny and vinegary for my taste. They bring you lots of food and the service was excellent.
