This isn't a 5 on my sushi scale, but it is a 4 and gets a 5 for being good in Tallahassee. I have discovered that MOST people don't know the meaning of 'good' sushi. Most think it's a wide variety of sauce covered rolls. Those that eat nigiri think good sushi is huge slabs of fish. Both groups tend to drown their selections in wasabi and soy. So I have decided that when I look for sushi in my extensive travels, to scroll to the bottom of the list. I prefer sushi the traditional way. Small pieces. No soy/wasabi and if you must, turn it over and only dip the corner of the fish. No rice in the soy! Japanica was a pleasant surprise in Tallahassee. Fresh fish, expanded selection on/off the menu, friendly staff. What else could you ask for. I won't waste my time looking elsewhere, for I have found my Tallahassee fish home. Oh yeah, bartender packs a mean martini :)

Went here for dinner tonight and it was a good experience. I've had sushi all over the place and this place did a very good job. They have a deal where you get buy one get one free for sushi rolls, so I was able to get 2 sushi rolls for about $13 which is a good deal. The quality was good as well. I also ordered the Hamachi sashimi and it was very good as well - nice and fresh. My favorite roll that I ordered was the Crazy Summer Roll which came with Eel on it. It was amazing. Very, very good and would definitely come back even though it's a little bit out of the way. They also have Hibachi here as well and hot entrees, but I didn't have any of those so I can only comment on the sushi.

I can actually recommend this place. Wide variety of food, some creative. The staff is friendly. This is in a strip mall on Mahan Dr just east of the Capital Circle. To the right of the Publix.

I love going here for lunch, you can sit at a table and still get hibachi food or go and watch them cook at the hibachi table. I prefer to get in and out at lunch, so I sit at the table. The staff is very friendly and the food is good with a reasonable price!

Visited for the first time, taking my Mom there for her birthday. We sat down for an early dinner at 4pm. We were the only ones in the hibachi dining area. Great time to visit, I'd say. The food was good as our larger party of folks ordered a variety of different items. Our personal chef was Jerry, red hat, did a pretty good job of presentation as well as interacting with all of us surrounding the table. The tab for the seven of us wasn't bad at all. I thought it was a good price for what we got. I will go again. I've read previous posts about the food being "oily" and all, but I didn't hear one complaint. I will go back again. If you have a difficult time trying to print the 15% off coupon that's on the web, just tell them know. I called prior to our dinner engagement and did not have to remind them to discount the meal...they had already done it.

the food is average at best but the customer service is one of the worst in town when it comes to wait time managerial help. my wife and i came to the place early to make sure we were able to get there before the rush on valentines day. we understood that they don't offer their buy one get one free sushi special. they kept pushing their valentines special on us that would have cost more than doing it ala carte (smiple math). next, we try and use a coupon that has no restrictions dates and they would not honor it. the acting manager let us know that it is a verbal policy that they don't accept it on valentines day. how convenient. there are better and less expensive places to go get sushi in tallahassee that have better service like osaka or mori or kiku (with a better buy one get one free offer). if you like to wait for food and mediocre service, eat here, it not, sample the other places, you will be surprised at the quality of food an service you can get elsewhere. there is probably a reason why this place had already changed their name once in it's 2 year existence.

By far the worst Japanese I have had. I travel the entire country and this was terrible. Service was sub par - no specials explained, appetizer sushi came during the middle of dinner, and only visited table 2 times in an hour. Food - sushi was not only 20 minutes late, but also terrible. The steak was dry and the chicken was rubber. Highlight of the entire experience was our cook who didn't speak English. Sushi is listed as BOGO free on their webpage, menu, front of building, and on sign around the shopping center. When the bill came not only were we charged for both rolls and were told nothing could be done about it.

best avocado roll in town. i know an avocado roll seems simple, maybe hard to mess up, but i've tried everywhere in town and they have the best. perfect.

I am a sushi fiend and I am always searching out sushi in whatever town I visit. I have traveled the world and eaten sushi at some really great restaurants over the years. I am fortunate, however, to live in Tallahassee and enjoy world class sushi at Japanica. The sushi ranks in the top 3 of any sushi bar I've been to around the world and trust me when I tell you I've eaten at many of the "highly touted and reviewed" places. The owner of Japanica is fanatical about ensuring they only serve the best grade fish available. Seafood vendors only send their best stuff to Japanica because they know if it doesn't pass muster it will be heading right back to their doorstep. If I could give Japanica 6 stars I would!

It seems like I start every review about places in Tally about how I'd like to write a good review, but just can't. It's the same again. We made the mistake of going here just after getting back from Japan. Worse yet, it was literally days after eating sushi at the most popular sushi-ya at the famous Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo. Can you say "HUGE contrast"? So, instead of ripping Japanica a new one for serving blech sushi (and what jackaninny decided the accent should go on the "NICA" of japaNICA??!?), I'm going to review the most amazing sushi I've ever...EVER had which also happened to be the smallest, busiest place I've ever been to instead - so I'm going to write about Yamato Sushi in the Tsukiji District of Tokyo, Japan For those of who don't know what Tsukiji is, it's the craziest place. It's THE fish market that all the restaurants in Tokyo and much of that region of Japan shop at for the freshest stuff. It's so famous that it's a major tourist stop even though you have to get there at 5am to catch all the major action: auctions, fishmongers selling anything and everything from the ocean, and an endless sea of motorized carts making deliveries. Yamato is the place that the people who work at Tsukiji go for lunch. Consequently, you know it's gotta rock, and it's always busy. The menu was omakase (chef's choice) but you could pick a few extras at the end if you were still hungry. (Omakase is always a safe bet at a quality place like Yamato because the sushi chefs only serve what they got in that day, and they feel is worth their time.) No fancy fake rolls here; just amazingly fresh seafood on perfect rice. I can still taste the chu-toro. It was substantial, but still melted away like butter. Oh, so back to Japanica...it's no better nor worse than every other mediocre to poor Japanese restaurant in Tally. It just ain't good sushi.

I want to say good things about this place but I just can't. The location is decent. Kinda hard to find if you don't know to look inside the Publix plaza. Once inside, nothing special! As I sat waiting, I noticed random Christmas figures inside a wall. It's Christmas season but it was just very tacky. Since I was having a late lunch, I started with the Miso Soup - which was extremely bland. Followed by the Japanica salad that was coated with the nastiest dressing I've ever tasted (something between honey mustard and ginger). Ended the meal with a very greasy and flavorless Tempura. The price was also higher then expected - but my roommate was paying :-) I refrain from completely dogging out the place because my roommate's lunch was much better. I will give this place one more try later.

Went for the lunch special early on a weekend day. Food - nicely done, nicely prepared, and yummy. My wife had the Udon which could have been a bit more flavorful, but that's a personal choice. Service - the woman was extremely polite and helpful and quick (though it was pretty empty due to the early time). My extended family loves this place. It's pretty good. Haven't been for dinner yet.

There's a little kick to this place...to this place I'm mean their Yum Yum sauce and that's what set this place apart from the others. Here in Tallahassee there's a few hibachi restaurants and they all do the exact same thing: set things on fire, make an egg roll, toss knives and cook good food. But like I stated before, what's sets them apart is the Yum Yum sauce that has a dash of sriracha hot sauce in it. Even though they do and cook a billion things, that sauce seals the deal. One thing I can say is that the level of service is okay and has room for improvement. We wanted a few minutes and get our menus but he crazy part is that another couple was here before us (at least 10 minutes) and weren't given menus at all, I had to let them barrow ours. All in all, I read reviews about their lunch and I'll be back to find out for myself.

We came here for my birthday, as we had coupons for buy one get one 50% hibachi dinner. I usually go to Osaka but with the coupons I figured it was worth a try. It was NOT. The place was empty, which was my first red flag. After we had been sitting, before we even got our drinks I was nursing my daughter and a COCKROACH crawled from the table on to my daughter!!! GROSS!! Needless to say we all left immediately. I will NEVER go back to this place!

Lunch is a good deal, a salad and soup with the plates or the rolls. Speedy, attentive service and good size portions. Had a chicken hibachi plate that came with vegetables and fried rice. Which also came with a good helping of the creamy (yum yum?) sauce. Not sure it would be worth it if it wasn't a lunch deal. The deal is also great for the rolls!

Giving it a 4 stars because the had a special on Sunday that kids eat free with a purchase of an adult hibachi. I love yum yum sauce and there's I have a love hate relationship with because it has a kick to it. The food was prepared real fast my kids enjoyed it. We will definitely come back

Our hibachi chef, Scott. He was the best one I've ever had except in Hawaii. Fun, funny, and cooked everything perfectly. We had 8 folks at our table and all had steak in some capacity with their meal, from rare to mid well, all perfect. We had a great time. Our Sushi was wonderful too. We will be back. Also I should mention on Tuesday thru Thursday they have a, steak, chicken, and shrimp combo for $15.95.

We were in town for a couple hours and needed some grub. We ended up here based on a recommendation. Recommendations don't always work out. The sushi was not as good as Kroger's pre-packaged sushi. That's a shame. The service was ok, but our waitress young and bit distracted. The whole experience was just sub-par.

We went to this place tonight because of the billboard that said brunch Saturdays and Sundays all day. We went in on a Sunday and it was not brunch - apparently it is all you can sushi only on Saturdays. Service: This is extremely lackluster service. I am not sure if these are just extremely overworked people or what is going on, but this is along the worst customer service in Tallahassee. One server seated us, another took our order and brought our drinks and never came again. Someone who seemed like the manager brought our food, and then she brought the check. After that we waited over 30 min for someone to pick up the check to pay. It got so ridiculous that we had to stand up and hunt a staff member to ask if we had to pay upfront (we did not), and then we waited even longer for someone to bring us the receipt to sign. They did not refill the drinks, and were not friendly or smiling. Food: Sushi was okay. Not spectacular. Rolls were coming apart. Presentation was alright. I've experienced better in Tallahassee...which is hard. The sushi did not compensate for the lacking service. Overall, we wont be coming again, too much of a hassle when there are other friendlier options around. :)

Was very disappointed with this place. Food was just okay. Portion sizes were small for the price. Wasn't worth the trip and won't be going back.

Not the prettiest, most ... appetizing (dirty fish tank) dining room, but the food was pretty good. We ate there on Valentine's Day and got our food in good time. We ordered steak and chicken hibachi, which came with miso and ginger salad. The dressing seemed like it was homemade and was really fantastic. The beer was cold and crisp and the service was pretty quick, albeit kind of unfriendly. The food itself was hot and tasty, but honestly how hard is it to smother rice, noodles and chicken in butter? I don't think we'll be back, there are other restaurants in town that give a much better atmosphere.

So happy with this place. First off, I accidentally came in on their lunch break (3-4:30, Monday-Thursday) and they greeted me and sat me immediately. I commented on how no one was there and they gently let me know what was going on. Haha! Second, they have a bogo sushi option. Of course I took advantage of that. A large rainbow roll and a choice portion of a philly roll for roughly $12.50! (I took a photo of the rolls. I specifically asked for no wasabi or ginger, so don't worry!) The rolls were amazing, and the two ladies that were there were very kind! Thirdly, the atmosphere was pretty awesome. There's an alcohol bar, a separate sushi bar, hibachi area with seating, and then a completely separate seating area. The bathroom was very clean. Just an overall great experience. Definitely bring large groups/parties because they have plenty of space!

I have eaten at Japanica four times now. I'm not sure where other negative reviews are coming from because I have had four FANTASTIC experiences! People seem to be complaining about the absence of a brunch buffet or something on Saturday/Sunday. Personally, I find the prices here to be more than fair. $8 for hibachi chicken with rice, vegetables and all you want soup AND salad. Portions are generous and most importantly food quality is EXCEPTIONAL! Try the Japanica roll (spicy tuna, yellowtail, fresh tuna on top) or the Green River roll (eel, avocado, crab, eel sauce). High quality fish, rolled well and reasonably priced. All hibachi dishes are delicious and the mushroom soup is something you must have! The service staff is always kind and I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes to place an order. The restaurant is beautiful and restrooms are always immaculately clean! I like to go after the gym, after church with my family, or for a quick lunch spot. I will recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for healthy and delicious option at a reasonable price. If you wrote a bad review, maybe you had a fluke experience and should give Japanica another chance!

So, I have been to Japanica three times for lunch while visiting Tally for work. The food is pretty good. The sushi wasn't amazing, but it was pretty good (much better than other, more pricey places). I have been disappointed with the service the last two times I visited. Earlier this week it took over 45 minutes to bring out sushi and I'm still waiting for more water.

Just went here today for lunch around noon with my husband and baby. It took them 15 minutes to even ask us if we wanted water. Upon ordering, we were still waiting for our food 30 minutes later. So, we told our waitress that we were in a bit of a hurry as we needed to be back to work and asked politely if there was any way to get our food quicker. Her response was to go ahead and cancel our order because there was no other solution but to wait. The food was mediocre at best and the service was horrendous. I told the waitress that we will not be coming back to this restaurant ever again, nor will we recommend it to anyone. She simply shrugged and walked away. Japanica, we were very disappointed and we hope you train your future staff in the art of customer service.

Can't review the food because ten minutes after being seated we had not been as much as acknowledged by a server, so we left. They were NOT that busy.

Greasy. Yes, greasy Japanese food. Who knew that was even possible?!? This place came highly recommended by my boss. She's never tasted the food, but apparently she's signed a lot of expense reports with receipts from here. I ordered the steak and chicken hibachi to-go and everything was pretty good. Just really greasy. Pretty expensive too. I spent almost $30. Definitely not the price point I expected from a restaurant in the Publix shopping center.

I will never go back to Japanica again. They pull you in with the guise of BOGO free sushi....but the service and attitude is definitely NOT worth saving a dollars for actual quality food. We were the only people in the restaurant and it was very clear that the staff couldn't care less that we were there...... Once we ordered our food, it took about 20 minutes for us to even see the sushi chef start to make our order; keep in mind they had been open for hours and hours already and we were the ONLY customers in the restaurant. 30 minutes after we placed our order we saw our plates ready to be brought to us.... but since the entire staff thought that their lunch in the back corner together was more important than serving paying customers.... we waited an additional ten minutes until another member of my party had to yell "excuse me" to even be noticed. The sushi was not terrible, but by no means was it the best I have had. Couple the poor service with the attitude of our waitress and it was an awful experience. I will gladly take my business to Jasmine's, Masa, and Azu before I ever even think about refusing to go to Japanica again.
