hopkins is seriously overrated. i live down the street from one so i always end up giving it another chance but always end up disappointed. the bread pretty much sucks, the meat isn't good quality and they just throw a bunch of fatty parmesan dressing all over the sandwiches which makes them soggy as hell in less than five minutes. overpriced as well.

I'm addicted to hopkins. The Garden Sandwich is delicious, as are the multitude of other options, although its a shame they took the cracked wheat and fruit salad off the menu. Best iced tea ive ever had!

Don't be fooled by the unassuming exterior, this place is pretty decent. Cheap cheap cheap with lots of seating. I got a banana peanut butter sandwich with lots (and LOTS) of sprouts, which was actually pretty good. If you can find it, you should check it out.

Hopkins is really another Tallahasse classic. There's always a crowd here, and for good reason too. The Chicken Tetrazzini Salad is my favorite here. I put a little hot-sauce in there and I'm a happy happy man. Everyone who goes should also try the Sweet Tea, I think they put something in it like crack or something because it is really outstanding. If you go, get a big cup and have some. You'll see what I mean. As people have already mentioned, calling ahead is really the smart thing to do if you're short on time; but if you're with a friend, it's a nice place to go and sit and talk while you wait. Like I said before though it gets crowded so sometimes you'll have to wait for a table to free up.

One of my favorite lunch spots (@Lake Ella). Love the ultimate Turkey on whole wheat bread... And, the Congo bars are really yummy.

    Great local sandwich!

A popular lunch destination, Hopkins is located in northern tallahassee on Market st. Hopkins is one of the top local sandwich shops of the city. There is another location at the Lake ella publix. I had the ultimate turkey sandwich... definitely worth it. It was hot and loaded with meat cheese and veggies. So delicious! if you haven't been to HOPKINS, you are missing out my friend!

The sandwiches are superb. Honest fresh food at honest prices. Everything on the menu has been time-tested. The large salads are LARGE. The background music is a little strange in the early evening when you can hear it - 60s and 70s stuff. Someone must have some old 8 track tapes. Free WiFi helps when you are dining alone. Lunch after 11:45 am is very very busy. If you crave a great sandwich, Hopkins is the place.

Ultimate turkey is ultimate happy. Good food. Big sadwiches. Great salads. I like the one off Monroe a bit better, but you cannot go wrong either way.

This is a great lunch place in Tallahassee with two locations. The Monroe Street location is next to Publix across from Lake Ella. This location has a grill and serves excellent burgers. The Market Square location does not have a grill, but the menus are otherwise identical. The salads and sandwiches are outstanding. It can be tough to find a seat during the lunch hour, but if you call ahead the food is typically ready in 10-15 minutes.

Hopkins is my all time favorite sandwich place!! Whenever I"m in a 20 mile radius of Tally, I have to stop in for a sandwich. I can't remember what my favorite is called, but I'm always trying to duplicate it, with not much success. It's turkey, cheese, mushrooms, bacon, onion grilled on pumpernickel. To die for! I also love the congo bars for deesert and the herbal ice tea.

I LOVE the food at Hopkins Eatery!! My family and I have been eating there for over 10 years. The food is consistently good...which for some reason in restaurants that's hard to achieve...The wait is fast when you call ahead or get there before 11:30am. My favorite things to get are the Chicken Tetrazzini salad, Tuna and Tabouli salad, Greek salad, Mediterranean Tuna salad, and the Tuna Cheese Melt sandwich. YUM!! Although you really couldn't go wrong with anything on their menu! My only complaint with the Market Street location is sometimes the staff is just plain grumpy...I guess with all those people they feed during rush hour gets them in a funk...but Hey...WHO'S MAKING THEM ALL THAT MONEY??

Ommmmmggggggggg sooooo goooood. I got the guac and it was probably the *best* sandwich I have eaten. The bread was so fresh and hot and the cheese combination with the turkey and guacamole was to die for.

Always crowded at lunch. But quick to serve food. Everything on the menu is delicious. Can't go wrong.

Great local sandwich shop but the chicken tetrazzini salad is the best. Staff is always friendly and it is relatively fast even during their extremely busy lunch hour. small parking lot fills up quick around that time as well so get there early, or late!

I eat at hopkins usually once a week. Its always good and the staff is always down to earth and competent. You must have the tea, it is very good!

Again, based on reviews posted on Yelp, I chose to visit Hopkins Eatery for an early dinner. The atmosphere was nothing special; it just looks like a regular deli with tables and chairs. The place was empty. For starters, I ordered the Walnut Gorgonzola Salad because it sounded so good on the menu. Big mistake. It simply consisted of leaf lettuce, canned mandarin oranges, walnuts, cheese, and store bought balsamic dressing. I did not care for it at all. I ordered the Linda's Special sandwich and opted for pumpernickel instead of the rye bread on which it is typically served. The sandwich was tasty and fresh. I ordered a side of the potato salad which was the BEST potato salad I have tasted in a long time. It isn't the usual potato salad drenched in mayo. This was more of a "German style" potato salad. It was absolutely delicious! For dessert, I ordered the "Heath Bar", which was a bar-style cookie topped with chocolate. It was amazing!!! And finally, I ordered a cup of coffee. I was directed to the styrofoam cups stacked on the corner of the counter, then to their soft drink station where I located a coffee pot half filled with coffee. I asked for creamer and was told to use creamer packs (store bought minis), that I found in the corner. Since I was taking the coffee to go, I asked for a lid, as no lids or stirrers were in sight. A bearded young man walked out from behind the counter, glanced toward the drink station, sighed deeply, and pointed me back toward the drink station. The only lids available were plastic coated soft drink lids. I tried explaining this to him and in a very gruff manner he replied, "well that's all we have!" Well, well! Alrighty then....

We stopped here while passing through Tallahassee, and just wanted something tasty, local, and simple. Hopkins fit the bill. This is a dive-y, hidden gem sort of place according to a woman sitting next to us. I had The Guac, and it hit the spot. The food lived up to the other reviews. Pretty good, but don't expect your socks to be blown off!

  • Drew C.

They were EXTREMELY busy when I stopped in for lunch, but the staff was fast, friendly, and efficient. I didn't wait in line long before ordering, nor did it take them long to make my sandwich. I had the House Special on Wheat, and -- believe it or not -- the food was even better than the service! Skip the chain and give Hopkins a try. I'd definitely go back myself next time I'm in the area.

Best meatloaf sandwich in town. Good service. Quick and clean. Good specials and soups. Affordable.

Hopkins is one of my favorite restaurants in Tallahassee! All of their sandwiches are delicious. Great for a quick lunch. And the iced tea is wonderful!

Stopped in here for a quick lunch while traveling and it was perfect- fast and delicious. I had the hummer sandwich which was fantastic. The Parmesan dressing was light and added a lot of flavor (not a creamy dressing, woohoo!).

I was dreaming of a Ruben for about 2 weeks. The first place yelp their out there is Hopkins. I didn't see a classic Ruben on the menu so I go to ask the clerk and before I could even ask if it was a classic Ruben he already had me buying chips and a drink! I figured WTH I'll try it out. Turns out it's a Turkey Ruben! Gotta say I was really disappointed. Considering it cost $20 for 2 sandwiches chips and drinks. Oh well...

LOVE LOVE LOVE this place!!!!! The Spearmint Ice Tea alone is worth the trip. The sandwiches are creative and the staff is extremely friendly. I make a point to eat there every time I'm in Tallahassee.

I wish three and a half stars was possible! Look. Their service was pretty speedy and the sandwiches were decent. But I asked for a bottle of water and was never informed where to get it, or if they were supposed to give it to me...? It's a super chill atmosphere which is exactly what my coworkers and I needed right after we clocked out. But also- no booze? Shock. Haha I'm not going to lie, that was a LITTLE disappointing. But like I said-- if it's nomable sandwiches you seek, look no further (except maybe Newk's, which is just a hop skip and a jump up the road?)

I was visiting my 80 year old uncle, when the subject of food came up. He said "oh my God, I found the greatest sandwich shop, they make the best sandwiches in the world". It was time for the geriatric version of a road trip! Off we went to Hopkins Eatery. There was a line, that was a good sign, and they had an interesting sounding sandwich menu, which is another good sign. But, this is where the signs stop and the reality sign hits you in the taste buds. As my uncle had previously regaled me in stories of the great depression (no worries number 2 will be here shortly) of how he ate bean and stale bread sandwiches with my mom, for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And, during WWII he had to endure cabbage every day for four years, I was soon going to doubt his newest tall tale. Although "Hopkins Eatery is not a bad place, as cabbage and bean sandwiches sound, there just not great, no where near it. I ordered a turkey ruben, it was good, certainly not out of this world. A small amount of turkey loaded with cole slaw. I was not impressed. My uncle ordered the ultimate turkey sandwich. All that is a salad on top of a small amount of turkey "big deal". This place is alright, service was good, and the food is good, just not great. The prices are ehhh kinda pricey.

I'm a bit torn. They happen to make my favorite sandwich here, Cordon Bleu...a sandwich (that's what they call it) and it's good. It's pricey at $7+ w/tax for just the sandwich, no chips or drink. Now for why I'm torn. This place needs a cleaning. While waiting for my to go order, I looked up to find caked on dust on the blades of a ceiling fan. People eat their food under these fans. If it's dirty in dining areas, it makes me wonder about what's going on behind the scenes. Again, I don't mind paying more for a good sandwich, but that extra money should go towards a clean dining room.

Dear Guac Sandwich (with no onions): If only you would be true to me and come live at my house. I mean, Hopkins is great and all, but if I made an effort I'm sure I could enjoy you every day. Please bring your friends Sweet Tea and Side of Potato Salad. She is like no potato salad I have ever seen - less mayo, more awesome. Waiting hungrily, Me

Hopkins is a Tallahassee tradition. It's always packed for lunch and with good reason. I always get their sandwiches and the bread is so fresh and delicious. I like supporting a local establishment too. Add their guacamole onto any sandwich to make it even better. The only thing I don't like is their sweet tea--it's very strongly infused with mint.

The official two-star Yelp description is "Meh. I've experienced better." - and that perfectly sums up Hopkins Eatery for me. We were excited to stop here for lunch on our way up to the panhandle beaches, based on all the rave Yelp reviews. But when all was said and done, all of us were scratching our heads as to what the fuss was all about. The location is in a strip-mall type of place, which is fine, and seems conveniently located to local workers. It was pretty packed, and there was a smallish line, which moved fairly quickly, and the food was prepared relatively fast as well. Decor inside was nothing to speak of. A pretty typical sandwich spot, reasonably clean, but nothing really "cute" or hip or fashionable or like any real effort was put into the decor. But that's fine, we are here for the food, right? I gotta say: I can't even remember what any one of us had, but it was all super forgettable. The quality of the bread was not what I was expecting - any respectable sandwich shop has bread worth talking about, but I did not feel that way here. I think my wife and mother in law each got two delicious-sounding veggie sandwiches, but both were (meh) nothing special. Whatever I got was so forgettable that I only remember thinking "what is the fuss about?" I think it was OK, but not worth going a few miles out of our way. My son got a peanut butter and banana sandwich with honey added to it. He was the biggest fan of the place, I think. Price-wise, I was surprised at how much I paid for our 4 sandwiches - somewhere around $30-$35, and we all got water, and it was JUST sandwiches, no sides or chips or fries or anything, as far as I can recall. I remember leaving somewhat unsatisfied, maybe even a tad hungry. While not "bad", I don't think I would go out of my way to eat here again. Maybe we all ordered the wrong thing, who knows.

Had a sandwich to go the other day... Once I got it back to work which was only just around the corner, the bread was stuck to the paper it was wrapped in... The sandwich gave me bad bad indigestion! Not very good!

I have been coming to this restaurant my whole life. It has grown from a hole in the wall to a larger hole in the wall with streaming customers. The food is ALWAYS the same and ALWAYS mouth wateringly delicious. There are always familiar faces, including the staff. They are loyal to Hopkins and to the customers. Visiting Tallahassee? Gotta get the local eats... The Veggie Primo is my absolute fav, but try the Ultimate Turkey if you are a meat eater. I doubt you will be disappointed. TAD

Mediocre. My salad was 9 bucks and it was iceberg lettuce. Very Few toppings... I'm pretty picky, but I can go to some other places in town and get the same fare for half the price.

I've never understood the fawning admiration for this place. I've been here dozens of times because they have a lot of options and everyone but me seems to think it's the cat's meow. Their sandwiches are fine. Nothing special. Their food is consistently average which apparently is enough to get a throng of Junior Leaguers to stay committed lunchers for years n' years. I'd rather have a Publix sub any day.

I agree with all of the previous reviews. This is an excellent independent lunch spot. It's also open until 8 pm. Closed Sundays. They have fantastic home made soups daily and the salads are very good. They have a number of unique and all home made salad dressings too. The tea: it is special with a little spearmint tea in it. They have take out service and will do delivery with enough notice. Free wifi at both locations. You can order via fax or their website hopkinseatery.com , but you still have to come pick up. The take out line is separate so this is a good way to handle the noon time lines.

The place itself was pretty nice. The setting is pretty calm and food is served quickly. I was there for a business meeting of 20+ people and we all had our food within 10 mins. Unfortunately, I wasn't too satisfies with the taste or quality of the food. It wasn't worth the money in my opinion an can't compare to Panera. The portions were big , but didn't enjoy the food as much as I do in Panera Bread. In other words, Alright but not great.

Now when I think of Tallahassee staples, those places that I always end up hitting when I'm in town, Hopkin's always hits the top of the list. It's a home-grown creation with an excellent selection of sandwiches and salads cooked up by a bunch of dirty hippies (ha! kidding!) and every single meal I've ever had there was excellent. Lost in the choices? My favorite's the Guac sandwich (hold the olives, please) and of course a big glass of the mint tea. That tea is the stuff dreams are made of.
