Atmosphere and location is great. I have been there dozens of times, but a few times in the last year, looked in their pastry bin to the left of the counter and there were some kind of gnats flying around in it. This has been on several occasions months apart, for that reason I will not eat their baked goods. The last time I went in there I didn't notice bugs but they were with out a doubt inside the pastry bin on previous occasions. Their drinks are good though and priced well. Outdoor patio is great. Can sit and chill for awhile. Another downside is definitely the internet. No internet on weekends when I get a lot of my work done. Even when the internet is up, it's slow and spotty. A few times I tried to go there and gave up because the connection was so poor. I will still go there to read a book b/c as I said, it has the best location of a coffee shop in Tallahassee. If they improved their internet connection I would be up there spending money more often, internet connection has been crappy for several *years* now. I go to coffee shops pretty much every day, and some slight improvements would get quite a bit more business from several people I know. Upgrade hygiene, upgrade internet and should be good to go, possibly contending for a 4 or 5.

Very pleasant atmosphere right on the lake.

If you're looking for a local coffee shop with a homey environment, Black Dog is the place to go. The walls are covered in art by local artists, there are game nights, musicians, and a wonderful view of the lake if you're sitting outside. However, I wouldn't say that the place is all positives. The mediocre coffee is a little over priced and the limited selection of baked treats is just okay. Also, if you want to pay with a credit card, expect an additional fee (and the barista does not always warn you). The one thing I like is that if you're getting your coffee to stay, you can wait and pay for everything on your card at the end, so you do not have to pay the extra charge multiple times when you get refills. Black Dog is fairly small, which I enjoy when I'm just catching up with a friend, but if you're looking for a place to camp out and study for hours, seating may be an issue. The last few times I tried to use the internet on the weekend, I was told they only offer it during the week. If you need the internet to study, forget spending all Saturday and Sunday cramming for those tests here. I've also never had a wonderful experience with any of the staff. Some of them never seem to smile while others are just plain rude. If you're not a regular, do not expect any type of special treatment. There are many offensive signs posted all over the shop as well: "Don't touch the piano without asking," "Absolutely no cell phones in line," "Don't block the vents or you'll be banned," etc. I feel like a 7 year old being told what to do by her teacher. Most signs state customary rules that any civilized customer should know to follow. On the other hand, one of the positives of this coffee shop is that it is located right off of Lake Ella. For that reason, I prefer to grab my cup of joe to go and take a stroll around the lake; especially during the cooler months. Overall, this is a decent locally owned coffee shop. Due to its location and the fact that it is not a chain company, I will continue to support Black Dog.

I LOVE this place. I make it a point to get a Mocha every time I come to Tallahassee-also, they were playing the Shins today. Bonus!

This place is super cute. The coffee is super strong in flavor and they have a ton of baked goods like quiche and pastries. The seating is prime inside and outside, but it gets super busy, so the inside tables are a hot commodity and I think they have a rule where you have to buy something every couple of hours to sit at a booth. It makes sense though, because before they started that rule I would go there to write papers and sit there all night. I love being next to that lake, too. They have a farmers market on Wednesdays!

Given that I work from home (and become completely certifiable if I spend too much time where I sleep), I've become quite the connoisseur of Tallahassee's coffee shops. From Catalina Cafe to All Saints to (almost) every single Starbucks in town, I've ordered my obnoxiously complicated soy sugar free decaf creations from every barista in the 32303 zip code. And while I can honestly say I'm a fan of each and every coffee shop in the city (they all have their unique charms), Black Dog is my go-to. From the dog-friendly patio that overlooks lovely Lake Ella to the mouthwatering vegan baked goods, this place is community coffee personified. The fact that my babies (all of the ducks) are right nearby means a bonus star for this spot. I can work, drink an iced pumpkin latte, nosh on a vegan blueberry muffin, chat with the staff, and when I'm finished, feed the crazy fowl I so adore. It's my home away from home. They also have a rewards card, so every 10th drink is free (rewards were basically my only reason for sticking with Starbucks, so that excuse is slayed). BUY LOCAL YOU GUYS. Especially here. They deserve it.

Great location. Right on Lake Ella with outdoor seating makes for a perfect place to chill. I guess that's no secret though, seeing how packed the cafe was. The coffee was actually really good, I enjoyed it. The thing that's keeping from going back is solely the prices. A simple iced latte costs more than Starbucks and for half the amount of coffee. But if price doesn't matter to you, the coffee and location are great.

They require your id to use your card. This place has a great location and that alone gives it a star. Sadly, I ahve to agree that the pretentious vibe of this place is what prevents me from going back often. The employees at this location do seem bothered by your presence. Their pastries are really good and vegan/paleo/keto friendly, and their coffee and taste great or burnt depending on the time and who makes it. Their attitude is sometimes so crappy that I don't feel like asking for fresher coffee though. They make really great blended drinks, and I love their iced tea. They also have cute, but clever knickknacks by the register! They are awesome for anyone that appreciates art, history, philosophy, physics, literature... They change their WiFi password often and when you go ask for it they will give you a dirty look, and this is not a once time occurrence, this is a constant from a long time. After a while they turn off their wifi, I'm not sure if they do it so people leave the tables...but it works. (I fully agree with Matthew C. review) The space is cute, but super cramped inside. I've seen employees ask people outside if they are going to buy something or to leave and the customers argue back that they just finished their coffee... This would be a great place, if not for that awful attitude.

I have been to this location many times, and I prefer it to the new location at railroad square. The setting is great, nestled right on the edge of lake Ella. I love the cozy interior and at times I have stayed for 2-3 hours without even realizing it. I haven't explored their menu as much as I would like, but their cold brew is decent, and their hot coffee is good as well. Most recently I had their cafe au lait and it was as I expected it to be. I live close by so it is a great option when I don't want to face the crowd at Redeye. I will say that seating is limited as this is a small place, but they have a spacious outdoor area that I will frequent often when the weather starts to cool off!

I love Blackdog! It's a great place to grab a coffee to study, hang out with friends, play a game, etc. It is a great place to hang out on Wednesdays when Lake Ella has the Growers Market. I love sitting out on the deck they have and watching the market. The coffee is delicious as well as the treats. Try the magic cookie bar.

Tallahassee's beloved coffee house resides at Lake Ella, the hub for college students, suburban families and even the homeless. A coffee shop's coffee shop, sometimes their pretentious mentality gets in the way of serving their customers with pleasant hospitality. It's a shame that the employees are often rude or impatient with patrons, b/c their coffee and pastry selections are excellent. The homie environment goes simply unmatched when comparing to other coffee shops in the area. Children are welcome with open arms; with board games, blocks and puzzles on site. Black Dog is a place to catch up with an old friend rather than do work on your laptop (a dirty look is guaranteed if you ask for the wifi password). I often return for the scenery of the lake itself when the sky is blue and the air is crisp, but don't believe the hype to its fullest.

Now this is a cool little place in the woods. There it was when we left the food truck Thursday. Just in back behind the gathering and right on the lake. A cosy little cabin almost with coffee, tea, some locally made popsicles. They even had a magic bar that was slap packed full of sweet goodies. Chocolate chips, coconut, walnuts, and some little marshmallows. The cabin is full of wood siding and neat little nick backs and coffee bags all over the walls. The young lady at the counter was so helpful and we all figured out what we wanted. They have like 3 menus here, there, over here. We all tried some sorts of pops and a couple went with the carrot cake. It was all gone when it was my turn so I got the magic bar and a mango jalapeño pop. It was pretty good but didn't have the heat I was looking for. The magic bar was very tasty thou. I will come back again.

Excellent coffee and atmosphere. Visiting Tallahassee and came two days in a row. After a trip to Italy I have found it hard to come by a good espresso in Florida but Blackdog came through. Iced coffee is excellent as well. Not too bitter or too dilluted. Prices are right. Definitely stop by and enjoy your coffee in house. There is seating inside and outside on a porch and you can occupy yourself with books, magazines, and boardgames. It is located right on Lake Ella so you can take a stroll around the park and say hi to the ducks and turtles while enjoying your coffee. 100% recommend a visit or two

What what! I found my new coffee shop in town! It's here at Black Dog! I was coming back from work one day and really wanted some coffee. I like almond milk with my coffee but finding places that actually serve it can be sort of difficult. With the help of the trusty Yelp app and the recommendations of my friends who have lived in Tallahassee, I went to Black Dog. Black Dog is located on Lake Ella which provides a really peaceful atmosphere to just hang out and have a nice cup of joe. When I got to the shop, I was immediately struck by how quaint and charming it was inside. It sort of looks like a log cabin -- super warm and cozy. I ordered an almond milk latte with Irish creme syrup and let me tell you, this latte was on point. It's easily one of the best lattes I've ever had. That, combined with the atmosphere and the super friendly service are making me really psyched to come to Tallahassee and drink coffee til my head explodes. Definitely stop in if you want some good brew!

Blackdog was one of the first coffee shops I visited when I came to Tallahassee. It has one of the most perfect locations being right next to Lake Ella. It is a little cozy hut style shop with a patio looking out into the Lake. When you first walk in you may notice the lack of large tables as most of them here only fit 2 people. Probably not the best place for group study sessions. Then there is the little area on the side full of toys and little kiddie stuff...is this part time daycare? The drinks are pretty average and nothing here has ever really impressed me except for their crazy everything brownie. No idea what is in this madness but I love it! The service can be mixed as well. Some people are very friendly, other days I can sense their stress or anger, and then other days it is just dead. On weekdays the wifi is typically great so studying is good. If the weather permits then you can also study out on the patio. I come here whenever I am usually sick of the other coffee shops for a change of scenery. Some days it is nice, but then other times it had smells and turned me off. I really want to love this place especially for the location, but unfortunately nothing is perfect. Will still keep coming here for sure though!

Good selection of teas and an assortment of vegetarian goodies. Indoor seating is a little awkward for groups and outdoor seating chairs could be more comfortable but it is a nice view of Lake Ella when the weather is showing off. Great place to have a mug of tea (you get your own teapot with a refill of hot water if you want) and read a book or catch up with a friend.

  • Queenie P.

This place is awesome! It's that coffee shop that every group of friends gets together at for a quick bite to eat and just to hang. Love the outdoor patio

The coffee here is really great, and the environment is less pretentious than those "other" coffee shops that pop up on every corner nowadays. I like that they turn off Wi-fi on the weekends to encourage conversation (or so I've heard). It's frustrating when people don't move for hours and hours while they pretend to work on a novel/paper/homework, and I like that this place discourages that at least every once in awhile. Other than that, they bring in new coffees every week, which gives customers that chance to spice up their life with a little variety. The employees are extremely friendly and patient, and the pastries are also quite delicious. This is a must-visit when you're in Tallahassee.

  • Beatriz B.

For those crying about wifi on weekends, it turns back on at 7. The whole point is to engage in other activities besides technology, such as reading or actual conversation. Lake Ella is beautiful and offers a wonderful view. I love the atmosphere of the place and the baristas are friendly from my experience. Get the iced coffee. I ask for a vanilla iced coffee but I have theories of them putting cocaine because it wakes me up so well. Try the magic bar. It will cost more than your drink but you're taste buds will thank you. Also the flowers on the tables- they're real. Oh yeah, touch them. I don't know about you but that was awesome for me

My favorite place ever. I havent had anything I didnt like and you can't beat the atmosphere. It's so quaint, situated on lake ella. Love love love this place!

Nestled next to Lake Ella, the service is adequate and the selection solid. The outdoor seating, along with the selection of books and novelties foods to buy make this a solid 4 star choice.

I decided to leave Jacksonville beach for the Christamas and New Year holidays in Tallahassee,Fl. This place is great. It has good coffee. There is space to sit down, its a little cluttered, plus board games, card games , and dominos you could choose to use to pass the time if you wanted to.

Great location. We sat outside with a lovely view next to lake Ella. Pretty good menu selection from light meals, coffee and other beverages, and pastries. They have gluten free and vegan options as well. We ordered a hazelnut steamer and black dog coffee. The black dog was rich and creamy. It's a great upgrade from a frapaccino. It's a great place to hang out and work

Ambience, ambience, ambience - with a healthy dose of knowledgeable baristas to boot. Morning, noon or night - this lake ella stalwart provides a dependable retreat. I rather enjoy asking for "surprise inventions" when I order an espresso drink (normally a latte+). This is my favorite coffee house in town.

As time passes and I go to Black Dog more often it's growing on me. I like the baristas a bit more these days. Only one of them has gotten friendlier to me as I've become more regular. The others have stayed stoic, but that's what I expect from baristas since that's sort of the MO of the personality type, right? (No offense meant to the baristas, as I was a snarky barista once long ago as well.) Every now and then the regular coffee is even pretty good. The internet hasn't been as spotty the last few times I've been there, so that counts as an improvement too. So I'm bumping my review up a star due to the one friendly barista, the less spotty internet, and the kinda good coffee I had the other day. Thanks Black Dog.

Good atmosphere and nice location. The interior reminds of how some cafes look in the rural north east area. This was the first time one of them came up to me (sitting outside for a min before getting up to order) and said "These tables are for customers only." I told them that I just sat down and I will order in a min; only then they got apologetic about confronting me like that. Two Stars is for the customer service, and looking on these other reviews, seems like I'm not the only one taking notice. I've come here every so often since 2007, only more recently did I get confronted with such a tone, don't know what happened.

I don't know why I didn't try Black Dog sooner. Great location if you are fond of Lake Ella, and I cannot wait until it gets a bit cooler, and I can sit on the patio on a cool day drinking a warm cup of coffee. The interior is smallish and warmly decorated with coffee bags and other avant garde stuff. Yes, the place is a little hipsterish, but not unbearably. Plus, the coffee's pretty good. I had a cafe au lait during my last visit. One of my favorite coffee drinks: simple and delicious. It was $3.20 for a large. Service was super fast. NOTE: Minimum of $5 for debit transactions. Some lunch sandwiches are served. I will report back if/when I try one, but I think my main purpose for visiting Blackdog will be a cup of coffee to aid in my enjoyment of Lake Ella.

Ignore the comments about internet. if you want WiFi, go to Starbucks or stay home (either are also fine places to drink coffee). Come to the Black Dog for their cozy setting, comfortable deck, and unique snacks. Come to play a game with a friend. Come to read a book. Unpretentious with good coffee, the Black Dog is a nice, local coffee house overlooking Lake Ella (really a pond). I like the house (today's blend was Bohemian Blend) with a shot.

Consistently rude staff. This place reeks of bitterness. It might be a requirement to work their. Previous employees complain about the owner. Maybe she's just a horrible person who only likes hiring horrible people. I don't get it. It's really hard to support a business like this that doesn't care about it's customers. Get ready to see some eye-rolling and completely unnecessary sass from the employees. Seriously, you can be the most polite costumer on the planet, and they'll find a way to ruin your day. Some quick notes: the espresso is not espresso (it's gross), never get the food (it's old as hell), they HATE people who use their wifi (just try and ask for the password. See what happens. I dare you.) and if you walk into Black Dog Cafe literally holding a small black dog, you will immediately be told to leave. You can do better, Tallahassee.

Hey Black Dog, you are one of my two favorite coffee places in Tallahassee and in the four years that I lived here, me and wife went to get coffee quite frequently. Often also buying our son some pastry, juice or local ice cream. I am very disappointed and truthfully also angered to learn that after years of patronage and support for your local business today at 10:30 am my wife was patronized and humiliated by one of your employees. I understand that you do not care about random individuals using your establishment as a public restroom. However, that does not justify or necessitate rude, in your face behavior of one of your employees in order to bully a faithful customer into buying a $2 cup of coffee because they dare to use your restroom. Needless to say, that such behavior in the presence of others just adds insult to injury and is just plain unprofessional. Yelling through half the shop is flat out uncalled for. (Others might find the use of the word douche bag quite a fitting description for personell displaying such tasteless attitude.) I have always thought (and felt until today) that Black Dog was a place of respect and warmth. I suppose we just learned about the opposite. Anyway, I / we are still a fan of your place and still love the coffee. Its just a huge turn off to deal with such BS. Thank you for your time.

Very enjoyable place to have coffee. Quiet, small, Ansley awesome classic rock playing in the background! I am not a huge coffee drinker, but I love their blended black dog coffee.

As a Tallahassee native, I loved going to Black Dog. The environment and their drinks are wonderful. I used to work for a catering service business that would make carrot cake for Black Dog. I like how Black Dog uses local businesses to support them as well. However, I left for college in DC 3 years ago and haven't been to Black Dog since until two days ago. I went to Black Dog to use their internet. But after buying their coffee, we found out that internet isn't available on weekends. I was disappointed with the lack of communication on this part. They should put up a sign explaining what the internet rules are, whatever that is. I also experienced rudeness from the workers here. I'm deaf so naturally, I will ask for pen and paper in order to communicate better. They gave me a dirty look when I requested for this. Then they presumed, with attitude, to give me paper and pen. After the initiation, their attitude got better but first impressions stuck to my mind. This place is alright. Very inconsistent with their service and internet. I'd much prefer All Saints over this place, despite its far location from my home.

When I was growing up in Tally, this was a local hangout place for my friends and I. Now, whenever we're all back in town we catch up here. Really low key atmosphere to drink coffee and eat dessert. On any given night, you'll see people here browsing the internet, playing board games, and chatting. They have a nice back porch when the weather is pleasant where you can watch people stroll around Lake Ella. My favorite drink here is the Black Dog which is like a much higher quality Frappuccino. They also have a nice Farmers Market outside on Wednesday afternoons. The only bummer thing is that on nights where there's something going on at the American Legion next door the parking lot can get filled. Other than that, this is a great place to go for some local Tally character.

The staff here on this Saturday morning is not pleasant. Even though black dog is an institution of Tallahassee there are numerous other options for great coffee and happy to serve staff. I'm not saying that I would pick another shop over Black Dog, but on this day I would recommend to a friend to go else where.

Good place to visit if you are a hippie living in a van and need a place to drink coffee for a while. I also have to say, it is a shame that in Tallahassee's "Best of..." paper StArBuCKs was voted number one coffee shop. This place deserves it much more.

Very nice...good coffee, friendly people. beautiful setting. Gosh if going for a cup of coffee, this is the place to be....indoor or outdoor sitting....... One thing I wish they would change is their no internet on week-ends (so people will talk to each other was their reasoning)...that is a stupid policy (social engineering?) and most likely may keep many away on week-ends.

  • Carlos D.

For me, this is the definitive Tallahassee coffee shop. The only reason I didn't frequent this spot more during my time in Tallahassee was because of the distance compared to the other coffee joints. This is such a homey little shop on Lake Ella. The location is very peaceful, and the inside screams "old south comfort". The crowd is very diverse so anyone can feel right at home. From my experience, the baristas were extremely friendly. The only bad part is the internet is extremely unreliable and the place is small and can get crowded. I recommend using this place as your reading spot ;)

The best coffee place in town, if you want games, quiet, workspace, or just fun. The outside deck is wonderful on a gorgeous Tally day.

  • Mark N.

Great location (on the shore of a small but quite nice lake, Lake Ella, which is a very popular spot with local joggers and walkers) and quite eclectic crowd (mixture of college students who come here to study with various hippie types and other interesting people...).. The coffee drinks themselves are OK, but nothing special.. They have a limited selection of baked goods, which are decent but also nothing extraordinary.. But the atmosphere is awesome!!! The location on Lake Ella, the truly bohemian crowd and feeling are what make this place definitely worth checking out!!!

Blackdog is everything a great coffee house should be. Comfortable places to sit, interesting people constantly walking in and out, walls adorned with local art, and not to mention very tasty coffee, teas, and more! I sometimes go just to grab a scone (get blueberry!) on my walk around Lake Ella! Judging by the rating others have left - you can get a pretty good idea that this is the place to go in Tallahassee!

    (5)
  • Scarlett T.

I really enjoy studying here. It's comfortable, Lake Ella's right outside looking so pretty, and there's good coffee and excellent tea. In the evenings it can get pretty crowded (given the interior is tiny), and their wireless does not work consistently. Bring cash unless you want to pay a card fee.

I love this laid-back coffeehouse next to Lake Ella. It's the perfect place if you're seeking quiet conversation, a place to study, or read. They also have an outdoor patio that's great for people-watching. The baristas here are also very friendly and helpful. My favorite drink here is the green tea chai and wish I could be drinking it right now. Latteland in Kansas City, MO is the only other coffee house I've been to that serves it and theirs pales in comparison to that of Blackdog Cafe. Looking forward to coming back on my next visit to Tallahassee!

This was my second time trying Blackdog and it was great. I ordered an iced coffee, while my fiance ordered an iced green tea chai, which was amazing. The atmosphere is certainly laid back and sits against Lake Ella. It is a perfect spot to grab a coffee and take a stroll around the lake. I was quite surprised that they had sugar water availabe as a condiment for your coffee along with the usual cream and sugar. The orangic carrot cake looked awesome, but I'll save that for another visit. The atmosphere is very laid back and they have a decent selection of board games if you want to sit down and challenge your buddy to a scrabble-off. They have a large deck for sitting out by the lake in the evenings.

A few 'insider tips'.... What Blackdog Cafe does really well: atmosphere. There are other coffee shops in town that I still maintain make better coffee and tea, but they do not have the quiet, eclectic atmosphere. All Saints' is eclectic, but the walls are bare and the baristas when I go there usually act like they don't care about you and your presence is a bother. I have never liked the tea I have ordered, but by all means, try it and make your own judgment. It's probably the cheapest thing on the menu. For summer, I suggest a light, money-saving Italian soda. You can usually mix flavors if you ask about it, and always ask the barista on duty for their recommendation if you're not sure what flavors will go well together. BIG TIP: Save $.30 (or thereabouts) by bringing in your own mug/glass. If you go there often...that can really save you some bucks. Scrabble nights are a fun way to meet people, and you can save a certain percentage on your order if you're playing Scrabble. I don't remember when Scrabble night is (maybe Friday 6-9??) but call and double check - I'm sure the baristas on duty will know when it is. Also, once a week there's a local jazz/pop pianist who comes in and plays on the piano for a few hours. I think that's on Thursday nights, but again - give them a call and check if he's coming that week. Also, every month a different artist is featured in the room. Great if you like local folk art and up-and-coming artists! But before you go - bring cash. Last time I checked they didn't accept credit cards, or there was a minimum or an extra cost to it. They ARE technically wheelchair accessible, because there is a ramp on the lake side leading up to the outdoor seating area and into the shop, but it'd be hard to lead the wheelchair around because the room is rather crowded with tables and chairs. Good quiet place to study, and on certain nights when the swing band is playing at the American Legion Hall you can hear awesome swing & jazz music through the walls for "free"...

the coffee and the fact that they now offer almond milk keeps this place at three stars but... for as much as i used to love going here, now i'll do to-go's for the large majority of the time. there are a few baristas who are cool ALL the time, but others... not so much. the lofty, snooty air i had noted at all saints when i first moved up to tallahassee seems to have transferred to black dog and the coolness i found at black dog somehow transferred to all saints. no idea how that happened, but there you have it. another sore spot is the A/C vents under the booths. i mean... ?!? still -- if we were talking about the coffee alone: five stars. black dog has some seriously amazing coffee.

I work at Body Piercing by Bink and we are CONSTANTLY walking over to chat with the awesome people at Black Dog and get our coffee/tea fix. Even on my off days from work, I often stop by with my dog after walking around the lake to sit on the porch and read or meet up with friends. I highly recommend the Iced Chai.

Really good place to get a coffee and a quiche. Really good home made tasting snacks. I'm taking a star off for the price. Had a small coffee and a small slice of quiche and it was around ten bucks.

Okay im gonna ignore the fact tjat the staff is rude and uncaring and just talk about, how much the owner sucks. After paying 6 dollars for cofee and sitting down to go online. I find out that internet is shut off at this time so people will "mingle and not sit online all day." I told them that is the only reason i came here. The rude barista responds with "everyone says that theres nothing we can do" im sorry but people dont go there for there shit coffee we go there to go online and maybe stroll around lake ella. I feel totally ripped off and big brothered by obviously a power crazed fuck of a owner. I hope yall go out of business. Lost customer for life. Boycotting you and advertising it. your a selfish small minded greedy pig.

Great coffee, sub-par snacks and AWESOME location. I wish they had more dairy-free products, if they did I would go there much more often. I love going there to study, because once you finish you can enjoy a cool drink by the lake.

Very nice atmosphere, and the coffee was great. It seems to have its own little community as well. The .50 charge for credit cards (no matter how much you buy) is a little annoying, but I guess I should be grateful that they even have a credit card machine. The outdoor deck is deceptively perfect for a little beer patio, but I guess no alcohol of any kind is permitted around Lake Ella(?). Anyway, great little place to hang out cozily and read (although the lighting isn't great for studying) or catch up with friends, or perfect to get a coffee to go and hang out at the lake and watch the ducks or sip while strolling and shopping at the cottages.

Forget Starbucks and other snooty coffee shops... THIS is where you want to go! Very community oriented. Laid back. Nice deck seating where you can look at Lake Ella, or just people watch. Drinks aren't badly priced. You can get anything... from all the different coffee/latte drinks, bottled water, fruit drinks, Italian soda, hot chocolate, an assortment of teas. They also sell various home cooked things, which I don't think is always the same stuff. I've seen soups and quiche. Bagels. Energy and granola/fruit bars. Lots of stuff! The inside is very cozy feeling. There are usually at least one set of people playing a game of chess either inside or out. People of all ages always there. Great baristas. They accept cash and local checks only. And they DO have free Wi-Fi now!

I lovvved Black Dog when I was in Tally Town. SO chill & right by Lake Ella (ella ella ey ey ey) (sorry I had to) I loved the coffees they had & just being able to people watch, just so relaxing. One of the last independent coffee shops in Tally. I am glad to see that Starbucks didnt make it go out of business!

Very laid back place to grab a coffee and just relax. Inside, there are several tables, a piano, a bookshelf with an assortment of novels and children books. Last time I was there, there was a group of people playing cards, someone playing the piano for a bit and I think sometimes there are people that go there to play scrabble. Outside seating is also very nice out on the deck. In the evening they have a string of lights they switch on and you can enjoy your coffee while looking out Lake Ella. (But I always get bitten by mosquitoes!) I noticed they also have desserts like tiramisu so I'm planning on trying that next time. I'm not sure if they always have those desserts and pastries. Also, I think they serve some wines in the evening. There is plenty of parking nearby although it's not concrete. The only downside is that they dont' have wi-fi. But I do see people with their laptops there working.

Just got coffee and chai to go so can't rate the in-house experience yet, but loved the energy and space and location upon our visit an hour ago, the kids and hubby waiting in the car for me while I ran in for caffeine for us tiiiiiired parents. Not cheap but nowhere is these days when it comes to coffee, and we'd rather spend our money here than at a chain fo sho. Chess boards, a dollhouse for kids, open air space, lamps on the tables. It's all good, and so reassuringly unique for us -- unwilling evacuees from $an Franci$co.

The Iced Coffee's the best in town, and the atmosphere is fantastic! The eccentric group of people who gather here and around Lake Ella really makes Black Dog a great place to just hang out and sip coffee. The people aren't pretentious here like Strarbucks, no this place is the real deal. Books line the shelves, people sit furiously typing away novels, and this is one of the best places to meet a complete microcosm of the city

This is a lovely, funky little place on the shore of Lake Ella. Free wifi, too. Go for a table by the window, or out on the back deck. Watch the ducks, people watch, eavesdrop on the regulars' conversation. I loved this place.

My favorite thing about Black Dog is that the clientele is incredibly bizarre (for lack of a better word). In one afternoon I've spotted a chubby guy with a fanny pack and a bluetooth earpiece, a grown man with pigtails, and a serious misanthrope loudly complaining about some fairly well-behaved children. Their green tea lattes and the porch overlooking Lake Ella aren't bad either. Service is very good and friendly, atmosphere is quaint and fun with some generally horrible local artwork to look at. On the downside, the toilet smells like a port-a-potty.

Morning Coffee and roll were good, nice small quiet shop. Can it outside and people watch on busy lake Ella walking trail. All kinds of people, but seems safe, even at night. Common sense prevails.

I really like this place. It's super cozy, and the drinks were really good. It's very relaxed and comfortable. I really like the outdoor seating with the view of Lake Ella. It's a little warm right now, but I'll be looking foward to sitting out there in the cooler months!

Blackdog is an extremely laid back coffee house in Tallahassee that is very reasonably priced. After you grab your preferred drink of choice you can either stay inside and enjoy or sit out on their back deck that sits over a man-made pond and under the beautiful spanish moss. How great is that in January?!
