Bahn Thai is under new ownership. I won't say that it's better now, but it's different and still very good. They've "Gordon-Ramsey-ed" the interior and the menu; give it a try.

Best Thai food in Tallahassee. One of my favorite restaurants here, period. Everything is intensely packed with flavor, and if you're someone like me who loves spicy food, they can make it as flaming hot as you can handle (or mild, of course, if you're more of a boring person). I've had various duck, chicken, squid, fish and vegetarian plates... Everything is great. They have a HUGE menu with hundreds of items, which is often a bad sign, but in this case, remarkably, everything is equally delicious. No complaints.

Almond chicken - not so good.

God made dirt and dirt don't hurt. Right? Or so I told myself as I washed down my food in the dirtiest glass that I've ever drank from. I did ask for another as soon as I noticed the mold growing around the rim. The replacement was just as bad (or maybe worse since it felt a bit crusty too...). I've had lots of Thai food. This wasn't necessarily the "best", but it was "different". My friends and I all shared so we ordered the Chicken Pad Thai, Beef Pad SeeU and Pork Drunken noodles. I enjoyed everything and thought the prices were fair (although, the portions are much smaller than I'm used to getting at Thai places). Despite the dirty glass issue, I'd go back.

This is the only Thai place I'll eat at in Tally. Its pretty good, but not the best Thai I've had. The service is always incredible, everybody that works there is so sweet. The portions are soo small for the price, which gets annoying. All in all, a great restaurant for Tallahassee, but not as good as other Thai I've had.

I always look forward to going to Bahn Thai. I've been a fan since I was a kid and we went on a regular basis (at least once a week)... Now that I'm an adult, sadly, I don't make it there often, but when I do, it's always a treat! The Green Curry and Pad Thai are my all time favorites with some Thai Tea on the side, but I've never been disappointed... The ladies are always a pleasure to deal with and it's soooooo delicious!

Like in the first review I too started by reading what others said about this restaurant since it is in an 'iffy' section of town. The decor was decently with a Thai flair bordering on trying-too-hard. The food was higher priced and smaller portions than I am used to from other Thai places. The food tasted Thai but was nothing I couldn't cook at home from a box. There was no "zing". The service was pretty good and they were helpful. Be mind-full that they have a lunch buffet which I have yet to attend and then close for a few hours and re-open later for dinner. So plan accordingly.

This is the best Thai I have had in a long time. Very good. Friendly staff.

I love Thai food. Whenever I travel it's usually the first type of cuisine I try. Bahn Thai is alright. Portions are fairly small and decently flavorful. The owner doesn't do much to accommodate people who request specialized orders. The dishes are way expensive for the portion sizes. The lunch buffet is pretty good, cheap and has an extensive vegetarian selection. Overall, Bahn Thai is a decent restaurant.

I thought this place was great. Temp was a little warm but not bad. I had the Basil Pork. Spice was just right and it had great flavor. Service was also on the spot.

Bahn Thai's juicy tofu pad thai and thai beef soup are the two things that will keep me coming back here. The place seems like it doesn't get much business which makes me sad and think that they're dim sum won't be that great, but I have hope! Next time.

The first restaurant I ever went to in Tallahassee was Bahn Thai. I went there to meet a friend, and I was very pleased with both the service and the prices. Most of the entrees are between $10-$15, and they give you good portion sizes, so much so that you can take some home and have another portion. Their lunch buffet is also really good for the price, though some of the food on it seems a bit bland. Lastly, their takeout service is fast and they'll do it for you even if they're closing up. I ordered once at 9:45 when they close at 10, and they went ahead and made the order in the 10 minutes it took me to get over there. Their food can be spiced to your taste, and it doesn't seem to matter whether or not you order it Thai hot or medium, the food is still delicious. I'd recommend this restaurant to anyone passing through Tallahassee.

Having graduated from FSU, left Tallahassee, and become a little more worldly, I'd give Bahn Thai three stars for their decidedly mediocre (that doesn't mean bad) food. But I have to give this lovely, family-owned business the extra star for the TLC they put into their food and their restaurant. If you're a genuine connoisseur of Thai food, you won't be blown away, but you will enjoy the experience.

This rating only applies to the lunch buffet; I've never eaten off the menu. This is the best vegetarian lunch buffet in Tallahassee. They have at least 5, maybe 10 different Tofu dishes and all of them are good. They also have a nice variety of meat entrees on the buffet. The food on the buffet is good quality for the price and the staff is very friendly (although they don't speak the best English). It looks very scary from the outside, but inside seems to be clean and fresh food. I have definitely had better Thai food elsewhere, but I haven't found anything better in Tallahassee. One other thing - they don't have a clue what to do with kids. Not that many people probably think about bringing kids to a Thai place down by the capitol building, but I brought my kids one time for the lunch buffet and the staff looked at me like I was nuts. The old lady who seems to be the owner was very, very nice to them and even gave them some candy. But they had no kids menu or pricing. She took $1 off the adult price for my 3 year old, and charged full price for the 7 year old. So that makes for a pretty expensive kid's lunch (about $8). Overall, best Thai in Tallahassee, but nothing to write home about other than the wide variety of Tofu dishes.

I am sticking with 5 stars! The red thai curry was excellent and the salad so yummy! Lunches are 7.95 and very good. The place is clean and classy. The sushi bar isn't in yet but they have made progress since the last time I was in. I will be a regular here for lunch so I can work through the entire menu. Once again, the presentation was excellent. My only lunch wish is that they would have a cup of Thom Ka soup instead of a bowl. I'll try that next time! I'm not sure if I covered this last time but there is no buffet- thank goodness!

I absolutely love this place! I went to one of the top Thai places in Los Angeles and tried yellow curry for the first time. I was hoping the food would compare and it sure did! Instead of the curry having zucchini I got carrots instead because that's how it was made the first time I had it. I also added chicken. Food came out steaming hot and delicious. Also had a side of calamari which was fried to perfection. Will be returning very soon...

Bahn Thai makes the best Pad Thai I have ever eaten. A perfect consistency and taste. The food is very good at Pad Thai. I love it and was glad to eat there on a recent visit. I went there with two other people. We ordered an appetizer and two entrees. This is always enough food. Yet there was a $2 charge added because there were only two entrees ordered. This charge seems unnecessary and annoying. The menu is too expensive for Thai food and Tallahassee. This is likely why the restaurant was empty. But I love the food so much.

A hidden gem and a nice change of pace from the ubiquitous "Chinese" buffet. The owner works on site, the other staff was very friendly, and the buffet was both reasonably priced and very good. This is my first experience with a Thai buffet. I have had many Thai meals at various Thai restaurants, but never with the buffet presentation. At Bahn Thai the selection was a lot better than I expected, though the dining room was very quiet until the tail end of our visit when a few more parties came in. There was a large selection of vegetarian offerings (tofu-based) on the buffet, though my favorite items were an EXCELLENT green curry with chicken, the steamed white rice, and fried banana pieces. This place is definitely older. Newspaper articles by the door led me to conclude than Bahn Thai has been around since 1979, so it is clearly an old favorite on this stretch of South Monroe just down from the Capitol and government buildings. This oldness, however, leads to a bit of a run-down appearance. The outside looks downright run-down (blink and you'll miss it!) but the inside is welcoming if a bit cluttered. The sweet tea, while free, was very bad during our visit, perhaps horribly over-steeped? Very bitter. Should have had water. I am of the opinion than sanitation standards at Bahn Thai was perfectly adequate and the buffet food was all fresh during our visit. Even so, I would be remiss if I did not mention that a homemade sauce on the table had a long black hair in it. That sort of thing bothers a lot of people more than it does me. Just take it out - it's not poison. Anyway, that's just part of being a culinary adventurer in my book and I'm sure it was an isolated experience. Give this place a visit. It's a nice change-up to the usual slew of Tallahassee buffets, the owner is friendly, and the food is good. Bahn Thai wouldn't have been around this long without a lot of diners being fans!

I definitely went there for dinner at an off time because nobody else was there, which worked out really nicely because my boyfriend and I were the center of attention during our meal. The elderly woman who seated and waited on us was very kind and guided us through the menu. I ordered a chicken curry dish and it was delicious! Not the best I've had, but I would order it again and recommend it to anyone. After I finished all of the chicken, I still had some curry left over on the plate, so elderly woman went ahead and brought me another bowl of rice, took my remaining curry, and mixed them together herself for me! She was incredibly sweet; I wish she could have been my own grandma, haha! I really didn't expect that much attention, and I could tell that she really wanted me to have a great meal. I felt like the bill matched the quality of the food, and I look forward to coming back to try their lunch buffet in the near future.

My Thai cooking teacher would be disgusted. Literally, the worst restaurant I have ever eaten at in my entire life. The bathroom is worse than the dirtiest truck stop. The cold rolls we ordered smelled like they were rotten and inside was lettuce and a tiny piece of tofu only! Out of 3 things, the pad thai was slightly edible, but too heavily dressed and really mushy. It's really sad to go out to dinner and spend $40 of hard earned dollars on a food like this. Really a disgrace to the restaurant institution. On top of it, we ordered three things and they charged us a plate splitting charge.

Had a plate of Pad Thai w/tofu, hot - not Thai hot, and it was good. The portion wasn't huge, but I appreciated that as we had 2 appetizers. I enjoyed the meal, but nothing really stood out. The most pleasant part of the experience was getting to know the owner's wife, what a very nice lady. The location doesn't lend itself to being discovered by out-of-towners, and I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to try it out, but it was good.

Bahn Thai has been a family tradition growing up but I feel that it is important to note that the business recently changed hands during the latest renovation - the menu is completely different and although the food was decent it didn't hold to the traditional Thai flavors and ingredients I expect from a family Thai restaurant. Give it a go but don't expect it to be the same.

This place is a skeezy dive with horrible food. Its like a Thai Burroughs novel but in a bad way. Eating out of a dumpster would be preferable.

This is the best Thai food I have had in Tallahassee, but not the best Thai food I have ever had. Dined in and the waiter was really friendly and funny. The food was really good; I was so obsessed with my dish (the Drunken Noodles), that I ordered out the same dish three days later. The inside of the restaurant looks nice, and I understand they recently did a renovation. I will definitely be coming back and trying some new plates!

Bahn Thai has a wonderful selection that can satisfy anyone's taste buds. If you've never had it, I recommend ordering a bowl of Tom kha gai, they make the best in town! Like hot? They can spice anything up for you! And I mean H-O-T! You'll need to dunk your tongue in a bucket of sugar, with those wonderful thai chillies! If you go during the week, you can try a wide selection of menu items on their hot bar. It's a good way to sample items you wouldn't normally order, as well a fast and inexpensive lunch. :) They've got a great variety of vegetarian options, too! I've been eating at this establishment for over a decade, the owners and staff are all very wonderful people. If you're lucky, sometimes they whip out the karaoke machine and sing you songs from Thailand. It's so much fun!

I lived right by Bahn Thai and would only go there because it was convenient. I used to be a huge fan of Bahn Thai in Gainesville, but found the Tallahassee location to be lacking in service, flavor, and cleanliness. If you want to try this place, then I recommend their lunch buffet. But, get there early when the food is fresh and before they are mobbed with people. This place seems to be filled with state office workers and students for lunch, because of it location and speed. One time I found a huge gray dust bunny hairball in my Pad Thai, ugh.

I didn't get into Thai food until I moved out of Tallahassee years ago. As far as I know, this is the first Thai restaurant to open here. I love the red curry with vegetables and tofu (traditionally called "gang dang" I think). It's spicy and creamy with yummy peanut sauce in it. The service can be a little slow at times unless the older Thai lady waits on you herself (who I'm pretty sure is the owner). She's really on the ball. The only downside is the restroom--it could be a little cleaner. Overall a great place though.

I'm absolutely thrilled to return to this old Tallahassee institution and be able to reward it 5 Stars. After providing Tallahassee excellent Thai cuisine for over three decades, "Mama Sue" retired and sold her establishment to a paisan who has continued serving up top-notch, authentic Thai food. I've visited Bahn Thai a half dozen or so times since I first moved to Tallahassee several years ago. What kept me coming was the great food, including the exquisite sticky rice dessert and best Thai iced tea I've ever had. My only complaint was the drab interior that appeared as if it hadn't been updated since the restaurant was first opened. Frankly, it was depressing and didn't look or smell good. I would have sadly hesitated to take guests there because it was that bad. But those days are gone. The new owner has obviously invested a pretty penny in updating Bahn Thai's interior. It is fresh, modern and inviting. But the best part is the food is as good or better than before! The presentation was beautiful and the service was great. Today I started off with an order of the summer rolls, which were fresh and delicious. For dinner I had the "Four Hour Massaman Curry Braised Beef." This is an absolute must-try; it's probably one of the best asian dishes I've ever had. And for dessert I had the aforementioned sticky rice and the "Thai Custard" (pictured), which resembles more of a bread pudding than custard, but hot damn was it good! In conclusion, I would say this to anyone who has ever visited Bahn Thai: give it another chance. Now that it's under new management that has taken the time and money to update the restaurant, it is a definite must-visit. It's the best Thai food in town. No question.

I am very happy to report a five-star (in class) upgrade to the once highly esteemed Bahn Thai here on South Monroe. The freshness of the dining space is immediately noticeable. The music: perfect volume, great music (presumably Thai instrumental (flutes, strings, very SE Asian sounding) The fare: Superb. Really. We Veggie Pad Thai (medium heat) which came with a nice salad at the front end. Also, the Tom Kha Gai (Thai hot) and the beef Laab (only chicken is on the menu but beef is also available). Portions were generous and priced fairly for lunch (see photo). Bahn Thai, as it as been reported by previous Yelpers, is back in the game. For nostalgic reasons I'm aiming to place it at the top of the TLH Thai heap. For now, it's just a five-star.

Enjoyed a delicious Thai meal with ample portions. Coconut milk chicken soup was delicious. Gulf of Bahn Thai seafood medley was outstanding. Owner will make you feel at home. Needs some external sprucing, but the chef and Thai family roots are what you are going for. Mama Sue is a real gem.

Had lunch there yesterday and came to yelp to post a review. Lady D's comments pretty much reflect my experience, too. Bahn Thai used to be a great place, but over the last few years the quality of the food and atmostphere has diminished considerably. On the plus side, they have at least spruced up the place a bit with new carpeting and ceiling fans with lights that actually work. The buffet area has also been reconfigured. The beverage is now included in the price of the buffet. But sadly, I think I will skip Bahn Thai in the future and head to Siam Sushi when I need a Thai food fix.

The only thai place I went to while living in Tallahassee. The servers were always nice (even when my mom gets drunk and acts crazy, they loved it hah) and the food was good. I can't remember each experience exactly, but I remember always leaving fat and happy :]

I went to this restaurant because I had done a little research online and there were some favorible things said about this place. Well let me correct their statements. The restaurant is located in an iffy part of town. Then the interior of the restaurant is dark and the temperature was kind of warm. On to the food. I started with a bowl of soup, which did come out hot and I must say there was a fair amount of stuff in it, so that was okay. Then came my Chicken Satay. The chicken tasted pretty good, though a little overcooked. Finally was my meal. I ordered the Panang Beef, but what I got was somethng totally different than the normal Panang. There was cabbage and squash and many many vegetables mixed in there (which I have never seen) and the sauce was watery and not curry like at all. Then to top it all off they put it on a sizzling hot plate like it was fajitas (????) I had asked for them to make my food Thai hot, but it tasted mild (nothing spicy about it) The only that was extremely positive was the service, they were at the ready to fill my water glass.
