Wow! What a great meal we had tonight. The potato pancakes and fresh baked pumpernickel rolls got us started. Then came the mushroom soup followed by the most delicious Veal Goulash I be ever had. But...it just got better when Elizabeth brought out the Apple strudel. OMG! the place is so simple and offers delicious food at such reasonable prices. It is a rarity to find a true family business like this where Dad is the Chef, Mom is delivering the food to the table and the son is there to greet you and take your order. The Paprikash and cheesecake that my girlfriend had was also amazing! We are coming back...and back again after that

Reviews that mentioned the potato pancakes being too dark yet under cooked were off base for me. The potato pancakes were crispy, not oily, and cooked properly. Tasty as well. Sides included creamed spinach and red cabbage. Both were good, although I could have had more cabbage. I ordered the Escargot for an appetizer. Normally, they are served in a fancy fish with or without the shells. Here, no, just in a bowl. However, I liked it better this way! Easier to use the bread to soak up the juices that were NOT overly garlic so you could taste the snails. I thought it was delicious and buttery. My main dish was the Hunter Schnitzel. Properly cooked and LOTS of it! It was also tasty but a but bland. I like BIG flavors. It was BIG though, enough for a 2nd meal the next day. No one at my table finished so we all had another dinner the following day. I just with I'd have had more Escargot for that 2nd meal. I would return to try another dish. Regarding comments on the staff, they were not overly friendly but they were not unfriendly either. I only comment at all due to others saying they were not nice. I didn't detect any real issues with the staff. Certainly worth a visit.

I visited Uncle Lui's again on Saturday. They were busy but we had a reservation (required). I must preface by saying they offer a lot of food, the food is good but it's also very ethnic. It's not necessarily something that I would crave or eat every other week because I didn't grow up with it. I suppose it's an acquired taste plus it was very much like a homecooked meal. However, with that being said the experience and quality were good. My veal goulash was tender and flavorful. The spatzel tasted better left over but maybe that's because I didn't pour the extra sauce they gave me over it. My boyfriend's chicken paprikash was also tender and tasty. The bread is just regular bread. The soups were hearty and large. I had corn chowder which was tasty and not too thick. My boyfriend had barley, mushroom and chicken soup with quinoa which was also tasty. There are two sides of cream spinach and purple cabbage. I was in Germany and they had purple cabbage there. It's sweet. The spinach was creamy and didn't have much of a taste except for being slightly creamy spinachy... All the entrees come with bread, a drink (in addition to regular water), soup or salad, and dessert. I believe they also offer coffee or tea for free at the end of your meal. The cheesecake was delicious but my boyfriend thinks it's from Publix! It was good. I had a crepe which was fresh and tasty with a lemon taste. The other dessert we had before was apple strussel which is very German and kinda like an apple pie but in pastry form. I would recommend Uncle Lui's but must say that if you're not exposed to that kind of food, it may be a hit or a miss depending on your adventuresome palate, but you will definitely get large portions! Oh and yes, the menu is limited.

Trout and veal goulash were superb ! Perfectly cooked and plentiful. Excellent service. Enough for another meal.

I loved this restaurant the staff were fantastic every table was full and they did a great job. I saw the water refilling waters several times so I don't know what that other reviewer was talking about. They were very nice people too. For the food make sure you don't eat lunch, before coming here for dinner you get sooo much food. I loved starting the meal with potato pancakes, what could be better? They were huge and not oily as someone else had said. The Hunter Schnitzel my aunt had was so tasty, and my Chicken Paprikash with spaetzle was to die for. Loved the red cabbage-- delish. We tried the Escargot I have had them so many different ways I've lost count, this preparation was with mushrooms and herbs as well as the butter and garlic maybe a little too herb infused for my taste but not bad. We wound up taking more than half home-- too full after Potato pancakes, salad and what we did eat, also took dessert home. I loved coming here reminded me of my grandmother's cooking. We'll be back.

I met a few friends here on a Saturday night since they had eaten here before and we all wanted something very casual and inexpensive. This was my first experience partaking in Hungarian food and I was somewhat nervous about the portions at this restaurant. In the end, the portion size was the least of my worries. I arrived and my party was already seated which was nice. The waitress took a few minutes to greet us and ask for out drink orders. I was fully complacent with water; however, the water comes in a very small glass which translates to many refills (esp. since I had gone for a run shortly before dinner). I couldn't decide what I wanted and then one of my friends announced that she was going to have a chicken dish which actually sounded kind of good. Once we were all ready to order, we sat there for almost ten minutes before the waitress took our order. I did choose the chicken and rice entree. The entrees come with soup or salad and dessert so I cnose the salad. The food wasn't bad and that's really the only reason why this place didn't get one star; the apple streudel wasn't that great, though. The main issue I have with this place is that the service was horrible. The waitress hardly ever paid attention to us and when we asked for more water, napkins, etc. her facial expressions were not the most appropriate ones. She knew we were all very thirsty and instead of constantly going back and forth refilling our water glasses, we asked her to leave the pitcher. She replied,"No, I can't do that b/c other tables need water.." Yet, approx. five minutes later, she dropped off a pitcher of water at our table. What? I was the only one that finished his/her meal so when we asked for boxes, she, once again, expressed unhappiness in having to fo get the boxes and brought out these really small boxes and we ended up having to ask for another one. This woman probably needs to change jobs b/c she obviously doesn't like being a waitress. She needs a job where she has minimal or no contact with other human beings and she can blame all her misfortunes on the computer. Based on the horrible service and the unpleasantness that I experienced here, I wouldn't go back.

This is an update on my previous review. I visited Uncle Lui's again recently and I am happy to report that the food is still as special as before. I do have a concern though. Most of the clients are European born individuals "of a certain age". Young Foodies of Florida, this place is really special. You need to get to know it. EVERYTHING is authentic. The decor is incredibly chic in an unusual way, like a living room in Vienna at the turn of the 20th century. Eating at this restaurant is entering a lost world, one with food that is as wonderful as in the most expensive nouvelle cuisine Latin restaurants of Miami. This is a restaurant that you need to keep alive by helping it find a new clientele. Surely we can excuse the fact that the prices are amazingly low and the portions huge. Don't wait for a Groupon or even a coupon. This place is probably the most special restaurant in South Florida.

Talk about "hole in the wall"... this cozy little Hungarian restaurant is tucked away in a small shopping center, slightly hidden from view. I highly suggest you all search for it though, because they deserve your business. As soon as you walk in to this "mom and pop joint", you are greeted by who I assume is the son in the family. Decorations are very cozy. Typical of Eastern European restaurants. Checkered vinyl table clothes adorn the tables giving it a slightly cheesy look but you can't help but smile because it feels like home. I went with 2 others and we all ordered something different. A friend ordered the day's special, which was roasted rabbit. He ordered home style potatoes as his side. My girlfriend ordered stuffed cabbage with spetzal. I ordered Hunter Schnitzel (veal) with sweet potato. Everything tasted great. Typical of a lot of Germanic, or Eastern European dishes, the food was heavy, but very tasty. The rabbit was cooked nicely. Being a very lean meat, it was still very tender. The cabbage was tasty, with plenty of stuffing. Paired with the spetzel and the gravy/sauce the cabbage was in, it was delicious. My Hunter Schnitzel was delightful. Cooked in a gravy with onions and mushroom. Food was served by a lovely older lady, who I assume is the mother. Another gentleman was in the kitchen (possibly the father? Not sure.) Now, the food is great, but what this restaurant should be known for is their value...or rather, a steal. Every meal comes with red cabbage and cream of spinach standard. The main portions are...huge. We all had to take home our left overs, which was plenty for lunch the next day. Soup or salad is also included, and that day we had matza ball soup, and corn chowder (delicious). Also included is a dessert with tea or coffee. You have the option of apple strudel, crepe, cheese cake, or another that I cannot remember. The total for our meal (soup, sides, main course, desert) was around $53. We also had a Groupon coupon, which took a substantial amount off of our bill. The bill ended up being only $28. Now, for $53 total, that is already a bargain. But for $28, it was the deal of the century for me. I was actually shocked about the price, and feeling a little guilty in the end (we left a VERY generous tip of nearly 50%). It is now the next day, and I have just finished my left over schnitzel (still delicious!). If you are looking for a Hungarian restaurant, a cozy place, with friendly service, delicious food, and great value (even without a coupon), look no further than Uncle Lui's. I will be coming back here again with or without a coupon. P.S. I have put the price range in the $11-30 range because each entree is at least that much, but the amount of food you are getting is by far more than what you usually get for dinner. So think of it as lunch and dinner. This place is a gem!

I can't decide if the kitchzy decor gets me or watching the seniors rolling into this place is more entertaining. But I think if it's supposed to be the food that entertains you, everybody has an off-night. Tonight was one of them for us. There's no question you get a lot of food for your money. What we were missing tonight might have been better quality and more attentive service. One person really can't serve a whole restaurant and when you bring in more staff, be sure they give a you-know-what instead of acting and looking like they don't. Dinner still comes with the excellent potato latke, served hot and crisp. One of the advertised specials was Roast Rabbit and my partner had never had it before so he got that while I ordered the lamb shank. One of my favorite dishes, I have cooked them and ordered them and this one I got was disappointing. Not bad, but just disappointing in both flavor and quality/volume of the meat on the shank. My partners rabbit was very dry and really should have been cooked in a covered cooker/roaster since wild game tends to be short on fat so it really needs to be cooked in moist heat. But another thing in his bucket list was checked off. The family-style side dishes were as usual, red cabbage and creamed spinach. I would say, though, that the spaetzle coming with my dinner was the most bland mixture of egg and flour on the earth. Not even salt and pepper helped it. The desserts were the usual, apple streudel and apricot blintz and were very good. But this place needs more attention in the kitchen and the dining room both. Such might be acceptable in Budapest but not in Boca Raton!

My party of 3 dined here mid-week about a week ago. A Groupo n deal introduced us to this place, and what a gem this quaint restaurant turned out to be! The food and service were superb. Probably the best weinerschnitzel I ever had. Delicious salad and red cabbage as well Portions were humongous --- I had enough leftover rweinerschnitzel that I took home for 3 more delicious meals. Excellent German & Eastern European fare. We found the prices to be very reasonable We were served truly gourmet food. We can't wait to return!

Loved the food and service of this restaurant the two times we have visited. I had to come back for the weiner shnitzel which is delicious. The portions are huge, they provide bread, and potato pancakes upon arrival. The meals are served with cabbage and spinach family style. The bone-in lamb my wife had was great tasting too. Dessert is included and the apple strudel is good.

Even by Broward County standards, this restaurant is horrible. The night I ate there, it was packed with people from a nursing home along with their walkers and oxygen tanks. Perhaps the food was better than their nursing home meals but I don't see how it could be much worse. Everything we ordered was overcooked and tasteless. It was supposed to be German and eastern European, but that was in name only. Cardboard schnitzel fried to stiff submission, potato pancakes oozing grease, red cabbage overcooked into tastelessness, spaetzle that was mush, and more. The quantities they serve are dump-truck sized portions impossible for a normal person to finish, but why would anyone take home a doggy bag with such inedible food is beyond me. I sure didn't. If you want merely bad German food instead of horrible, go to the Hofbrau House on State Rd 84 in Ft Lauderdale.

Uncle Lui we need to break up...I tried to love you and I know you tried to love me but I couldn't muster love for your food and your love thru your food fell short of my needs. It's not me - because I really like this food - it's you and your inability to execute delicious dishes. Please don't be mad at me - there are people who 'get' you and appreciate you for what you are - I'm just not one of them. I'm concerned that as the older clientele drop off the grid you might struggle for business but for now, with the help of discount sites, you seem to be doing ok. What brought me to this? Uncle Lui's is a restaurant that looks like it's in your Grandma's apartment. From the knick knacks in the china cabinets to the plastic tablecloths it doesn't seem like a commercial establishment. And, as if visiting an apartment of an elderly person, anyone can see the stains on the chair seat cushions and chips on many of the dishes but no one says anything. I have been here before because I have family members who relate to the food, as do I, but every time I get the feeling that the place is a bit dirty and the food is a bit dumpy. I return 2 or 3 times a year to see if maybe this time I'll like it but tonight was my last time. If my family members have a hankering for their food they can either go without me or take it to go. The manager and server are hard-working people. The server is a woman who is not a young person and she is stronger and faster than I ever was or will be. We admire her speed and ability. We ordered Veal Goulash, Wiener Schnitzel, and apple strudel. A complimentary dish of potato pancakes, sour cream, apple sauce and butter were brought to the table. In theory this would be very nice but the reality was the potato pancakes were dark brown, flat, and a little oil-soaked as they are every time. And every time I eat one I find the middle has undercooked potatoes so I've not finished a pancake yet. The salad was fresh and delicious, and came with a side of a very thick cream dressing. That was the best part of the meal. The frankfurter soup (I kid you not) and creamed corn soup were not good (no big surprise there). Veal Goulash is a meat stew that has pieces of fork-tender meat in a sauce containing paprika and sour cream. The goulash sauce was creamy but peppery and the spaetzel (pasta) was tasteless but the meat was very tender and plentiful. The schnitzel, fried veal cutlets, while crisp and tasty, had an aftertaste of dirty oil. They serve two pieces that are about 8 inches by 8 inches. I've never seen anyone finish a plate. The apple strudel looked great but didn't taste fresh, It had a cinnamon paste around the apple pieces that was off-putting. The 'whipped cream' was some concoction that foamed down with time. The cheesecake and crepe were ok and the coffee and tea were good. So Uncle Lui I know you are trying to love me the best that you can, and you did send us off with doggy bag souvenirs - that my family members will enjoy. I wish you well.

My family and I have been going to Uncle Lui's for quite a few years now. It's delicious, hearty, homemade, Hungarian food. First off, your price for dinner includes: small bowls of red cabbage and creamed spinach to share, rolls, soup, entree and side, beverage, and dessert. The matzoh ball soup is out of this world. My favorite dish is the chicken paprikash with spaetzle. I have tried others, but always go back to that one. My husband likes the schnitzel. The best dessert is the apple streudel. And, no matter how much you stuff yourself, you will have leftovers to take home. Often, we are the youngest people in the place. (We are in our 50s and our kids are now in their 20s; but, we have been going since the kids were younger.) The clientele is mainly a seniors crowd. But, don't let that stop you. Who else knows where the good food is at a bargain price? The place is kind of small, so be sure to make reservations. Uncle Liu's has been around for quite a while now. And, I hope it never goes away.

This place must be doing something right given the positive reviews but I must say this was not our experience. Yes, you get a ton of food for your money, BUT when that food is beyond bland, cooked incorrectly, and the service is rude I'm not sure it's worth it. My husband had weiner schnitzel which made both of us question whether the meat was actually tough chicken or really bad, shake-n-baked veal. I had the flounder which was a giant waste of a piece of fish and $18. It had the oddest texture... "gelatinous" is probably the best way to describe it. The egg dipped coating was supposed to be reminiscent of white wine and lemon but I can assure you the only thing reminiscent of either of those was the lemon wedge sitting on top of the tasteless, jelly-like piece of fried fish. At least the sweet potatoes were edible. Maybe if you frequent golden corral - type restaurants and enjoy the quality of food there this place is a nice change, but I can think of many better ethnic restaurants in the area. Don't waste your money.

  • Stuart G.

First off let me say that if you want a light meal this is not the place for you! I had all the foods I try to avoid in one night in one meal. Potatoes Fried Latke put on table with sour cream apple sauce and bread! Chicken Paprikash in sour cream stew spaetzle very heavy. creamed spinach and red cabbage. Fillet dredged in egg batter and sauteed in lemon and white wine was light and tasty. Dessert was apple strudel light and not too sweet. All in all a feast for $15 per person. Reservations a must...(been turned away) but takeout for $10 per dish is a steal!

I agree with many of the previous reviews. Atmosphere is circa 1968 in someones basement. Could use a good cleaning. Prices are very fair. Portions are large. Flavors are lacking seasoning. Menu is very limited. Eastern European Food is basically Pheasant Food. This is a description term not a derogatory term. Heavy with Brown Gravies. Thick like glue. Escargot was meh at best. This is being Generous. The Potato Pancakes were dark Grey in the inside which I didn't find appetizing. Split Pea Soup was pretty good. Entrees: Hunters Schnitzel was a glutinous. Portion was huge but the Veal was definitely not the best quality. What do you expect for such inexpensive prices? The Calves Liver was reported to be good. Apple Strudel was ok. For the price you get to be fed like cows at a trough which senior citizens love, but the heck with quality. As long as there is a bucket of feed, that is the primary concern when it come to restaurants! This place, for the reasons I mentioned, just won't be a place I will repeat. Do you think an owner of a place where people eat could take 30 minutes and see that the fans have months if not years of dust buildup on the blades? Clean it!

    (2)
  • Kris K.

Uncle Lui's is amazing!!! Everyone needs to try this neighborhood gem! This is a very casual european style diner. The portion sizes are enough to feed 3 people - talk about bang for your buck!!

Given this restaurant is of my cultural background, and I do speak the language, I always get a kick out of the place. I find it interesting that some Yelpers find the senior citizens disconcerting. If you need young/hip pretty people sitting in adjoining booths to validate your experience than you are shallow - get a life. Decor might as well be 1950's Budapest. Kitch might be the right word. Menu has lots of fun stuff if you are familiar with German or Hungarian fare. Prices are very reasonable given it includes salad, soup, potato pancakes, rolls, coffee and desert. All for the price of a main course. Portion sizes are double what someone normally would eat. Wait staff is a hoot. The old lady is a throw back from the "mother land" and if you want sweet and smiley, forget it. When she delivers the plates she barks! "WHO ORDERED ZA'VIENER SCHNITZEL??" You expect her to click her heels as she tosses it at you. No soft and fuzzy here. The owner, a young dude, has softened up over time. His approach previous to this was down-right nasty. Almost as if he dislikes customers. These days the only time his bad attitude re-appears is if you show up without a reservation. Reservations are NOT suggested they are REQUIRED. If you dare show up without one, he kicks back in Gestapo mode. Someone must have told him to lighten up because he is handling it better these days but his ugly side does re-appear if you dare darken his door without a reservation. Come on guy, figure out a way to say NICELY to people: "I'm so sorry we can't seat you as reservations have taken all our tables at this time. I'm so sorry. If you can wait an hour, we can seat you. If not, I truly apologize and hope you will call and make reservations for another time." But that isn't his style... whoooooaa, not at all. Food quality is good. I'm surprised to read others slam against the food. Hasn't been my experience the 4-6 times I'm there. Lots of easy parking - actually the restaurant is in a shopping plaza that is primarily empty. Not the best of places, not the worst of places. University @ Oakland, right next to Lowe's. Be prepared to take home leftovers.. you'll eat for days just on the leftovers.

I'm glad I found this place. It couldn't be more Hungarian. I went there with some friends. The furnitures and the little gadgets reminded me of some old restaurants in Hungary. I was constantly smiling while we were there. Surprisingly, the soup tasted just like the one my grandma used to make back home. I haven't had something similar at a restaurabt before, so this family-style thing must be true. Portions are huge, so eventually it's enough for 2 dinners. You'll get pancakes, soup/salad, main dish which comes with red cabbage and cream spinach family style, plus dessert and coffee. Great deal. Just don't forget to make a reservation. It was quite busy after 6pm on a Friday night. Go and get some taste of the Hungarian lifestyle. I'll definitely go back.

A treat every time. Get ready to over eat. If you think Friday's or Olive Garden is good. Then don't eat here you would not appreciate it. If you come from a Family from Eastern Europe your love everything here. Starting with potato Pancakes the minute you are seated to Apple strudel for dessert for a finish. Every thing in between is homemade with love. Left overs will feed you at least one more meal. It's in a rundown shopping center just to the west of lowes You will be shocked at the value

This family-owned restaurant has been around for years and located in a small strip by Lowe's in Sunrise, FL. This place is small, with old furniture and decor, but the plates of food are abundant! Each plate will feed a minimum of two people, but they don't allow sharing. Keep in mind, this restaurant serves German/Hungarian food, so don't expect their Chicken Francese or Chicken Cacciatore to be like the Italian version. It WILL be different! Their Wiener Schnitzel is huge and delicious!! When you are seated, the staff brings a basket of different rolls and big potato latkes, served with applesauce and sour cream. With your main entree, you receive a soup or salad. Each entree is served with a side (rice, spaetzle (like gnocchi) or potato). When they serve the entree, they also provide a bowl of creamed spinach and red cabbage, which they put in the middle of the table to share. Each meal ends with a dessert and coffee (meal is served with beverage, but I choose the coffee to go with my dessert). The apple streudel is very good! The dishes range anywhere from.$17+, but they do offer an "Early Bird" menu (must be seated by 5pm), which costs slightly less (approx.$13), but the portions are supposed to be smaller (not sure by how much). They have a regular menu, but at the door, there are quite a few daily specials posted on a chef's chalkboard. The staff is small, but pleasant. If you plan on going with little ones, they do not offer a kids menu. Although they don't allow sharing, they allowed my 10 yr. old son to share my plate. I'm not quite sure what the age cutoff is because we have been there with a 12 yr. old and we were forced to order a plate for her. Be prepared to take home leftovers, unless you are a glutton!

This is fairly authentic Hungarian fare. You do get A LOT of food for your money. Be sure to make a reservation. When you arrive not only do you get a bread basket but you also get a potato pancake! What a pleasant surprise. I thought the wait staff was very sweet even if they were a bit harried. Every table was full on a Saturday night. We then both had the corn chowder which I liked very much. My husband and I both had the hunter schnitzel. When you have hunter schnitzel you must have spaetzle. It's perfect for soaking up the gravy. It was definitely more Hungarian due to the sour cream and the paprika. We couldn't finish it all. I finished with the crepes and he had the struedel. Both were good. I recommend getting something besides water to drink. Filling the water glasses are not a top priority here which is fine on a busy night. Overall its a good value. Its always fun to try new cuisine. PS The strip mall where this place is located is a bit sketchy.

As Authentic as it gets!! Perfect experience. I had the Hungarian veal goulash, hubby had Veal Schnitzel. Both were amazing!! The cabbage....who knew cabbage could be so mouth watering???!!!! Service...Felt welcomed, and he patiently educated us on the menu. Def Mom and Pop atmosphere, but we love that. Meal is 4 courses, at a great deal. Highly recommend.

Clean it!
