I struggled with this. Its a cute little British pub, and the food was tasty. But it upset my stomach badly, and I wasn't sure how much to hold that against them. Sometimes good food doesn't sit well though, so I decided not to take too much away. Anyway, enough of my gastro issues. Moving on. It's a 3.5 star place, but I'm rounding up. Service was good, food was good. It's just tough to give a British pub really high marks except in comparison to other British pubs. Probably same with sports bars. A sports bar is rarely a 4 or 5 star restaurant, but you can have a 4 or 5 star sports pub. So, in that vein, this was a 3.5-4 star British pub. Going to start with my girlfriend - she got fish and chips, which is her standby for a British or Irish or Scottish pub. However, she's rarely thrilled with it. She loved this. They offer a 4oz and a 8oz portion - she got the 4oz, but after a few bites she asked them to bring her the other 4oz. She couldn't get enough of it. They do a "traditional Sunday roast" on Sundays, and that's when we were there. They offer prime rib, turkey, or pork (though they were out of pork this day). It comes with a weird, but delicious kind of stuffing (weird because it looks like a ball of multigrain bread, but it tastes like stuffing), carrots, parsnip, potatoes, gravy, and I'm forgetting something. Anyway, its a good amount of food, and while you probably wouldn't expect really good preparation from a British pub in Sarasota, it was delicious. Granted, I dipped everything in gravy, but that's what it was there for. It's a nice size place with a few TVs (many on soccer, of course), pool tables, darts, and a dining area. This was my second time there - the first time being a couple years back and I left after one drink because it smelled like urine. This time, no such smell and a much better experience.

Best white sangria of my life! No lie. It was tropical-ish (with pineapple, coconut, peach flavors) and so refreshing! The owner informed us that she makes the sangria herself with no syrups. There's also red sangria that I wanted to try, but I was so in love with the white sangria. I was conflicted. Next time, though! At $6.50 a glass, how can you honestly go wrong with this? So good, so good. This place caught my eye because of the bar that used to be at UIUC. It wasn't anything like it or affiliated, but I loved it! It was very cozy and welcoming, with TV's, dartboards and a pool table. I didn't have a chance to check the menu, but I'm guessing it's fabulous. The owner and her staff were super friendly! They invited us back for their Friday night music show. Sadly, I forgot that we were leaving town before then. We'll be sure to go back next time we're in town, for sure!

The food here was pretty good. Don't try using the free beer promo and the $10 for $20 promo in the same visit, they might get miffed. Steak fries with curry dip was great, the shepherds pie was great, it was all great. Good comfort food. Pop in before or after a movie at the Parkway 8.

06/12/2015 I have eaten fish and chips all over the USA and have to say the fish n chips I purchased today were the WORST I've ever eaten. French fries were cooked in old oil. You could taste the flavor throughout. Plus they were soft and I asked for them well done. The fish had a batter that was soft inside and not cooked throughout. The cabbage was old. They must make it ahead. I received two pieces of fish and soft soggy fries and cabbage for 18.00 dollars after tax. I don't know how this place stays in business. Maybe the other food is better. C. I've eaten at 'The White Horse Pub' several times, always in the evening. I have enjoyed the Fish & Chips, Shepard's Pie, Beef & Guinness Pie, and their Reuben were all delicious. Their pizza is really good, too. The service has always been prompt and attentive. Then, one time, I visited on a Sunday afternoon. Oh My Goodness. They do a traditional Sunday Roast, which is amazing. Your choices are 8 oz Prime Rib, Roasted Chicken Breast or Roasted Turkey. Of course I went for the Prime Rib, and it was delectable - melt in your mouth meaty goodness. The sides were peas, fresh steamed broccoli, roasted parsnips and carrots, Yorkshire Pudding & gravy. I took much of it home - there was that much food, and it was such a great deal. I look forward to returning to dine there again. This is a go-to spot for me - I highly recommend it for the food, atmosphere, great music, and service.

We ate here a few days ago and will be back very soon!! The restaurant reminded me of a pub in england! It was very clean and the staff was very friendly. We have the onion ring appetizer. It was DELICIOUS! The were perfectly crispy and the onions weren't mushy! They came with a homemade horse radish sauce that was absolutely to die for! I order the fish and chips and my husband had the the full English breakfast. The fish was some of the best I have ever had. The batter was delectable and the fish perfectly cooked. The chips were wonderful as well. My husband's breakfast reminded me of breakfast I actually ate while in England! I can't wait to go back!

I forgot how much I like this place ! It is under new ownership but in this case, the owner is extremely knowledgeable about the restaurant business and is keeping all of the great things about the place, in place ! I just had one of the best Reuben's in Sarasota and one of my favorite beers on draft (Old Speckled Hen). They also have my other fav (Cigar City Jai Alai). I hadn't eaten here in several years and I am so glad I came back. My friend had a wild sandwich with chicken breast, spinach, ham, swiss cheese and a fried egg on top. Awesome ! All I can say is . . . . I'll be back !

Wonderful bartender with an authentic accent that gave us great service, yummy beer and food, great atmostphere. NOT smoky. Nice little side room for darts

Came in on a Saturday night, the tall girl bartender was very nice and recommended a great beer on tap. I ordered the chicken wings with garlic parmesan. They were the best wings I've ever ate. The chef came out after, just to see if I liked the meal. Great and friendly place. I will be returning!

What a great British pub nestled in a Sarasota strip mall. I had the fish and chips. I only ordered one filet but it was so good I asked for another. It was a nice size piece of fresh fish fried to crispy Beer battered crunch. The fries were pub perfection and even the side of peas were fresh (not from a can!). My boyfriend ordered a Sunday roast dinner and he liked what he ordered too. What also makes this place really cool is (i) the British flag inspired dresses worn by the wait staff ( no ridiculous skimpiness here!); (ii) a cozy and relaxed setting like you'd expect of a pub, but not dark like a cave; (iii) a nifty darts room.

I have never been a fan of British cuisine and I remember why when I came. Mushy peas = no bueno. We were here for the USA soccer game and the service was poor. The owner suggested chips with guacamole. They turned out to be nothing more than spinach wraps that were deep fried with a very spicy guacamole on the side. Their beers were good and I suppose that is why any American goes to a British pub. My buddy had curry chicken wings he said they were terrible. One thing to note - we had a gift certificate from restaurants.com for $50 and a gift certificate was void by the time we got there. *This was not the pubs fault* but they also didn't try to help us out in any way. They simply said sorry and that was all. We spent over $100 there that night it would have been nice to give us a little break. Go to the pub if you want to have a couple of pints. Go to a restaurant if you want to eat beforehand. If you want better service go to the bar yourself.

had the chicken and mushroom pie which was good. I ordered the peas as my veg since I believe pot pies should have a green veg in it. We also ordered 10 wings which were also good as were the cheese fries. Our server was sweet and very helpful with any questions we had. I think she was the owner and the bartender for the day so she was running around. Kind disappointed that they charged a dollar for all flats on the wings.

Stopped in because they were supposedly rated "Best English Pub - Sarasota Area" so we bought a coupon from Restaurant.com . The Fish and Chips was overly battered on a small, poor quality, piece of cod that was very under cooked (mushy) and piled on top of a few cold fries(chips). I was told that if the oil is too hot it starts to burn before the batter cooks through - OK so then why serve it that way? My wive's salmon was not only served cold but was dry - we sent it back and they warmed the same piece up a bit. It was also not a fresh piece of salmon. Beer was good but you'll need to drink at least 6 pints to stomach the food. I am truly amazed that some reviewers found the food to be not only edible but enjoyable The service was good but what they serve is not.

Every time I've come here the food has been delicious. Best fish and chips in town, The Reuben is SO good too! Beef and Guinness pie was my favorite on the pie flight. I've never had toad in the hole before so I have nothing to compare it to, but it was very good as well. Great beer selection, friendly staff.

Need to update their menus. Out of 4 items ordered they only had 1 of them. Only 1 server and she recommended a sampler entree that ended up being more like an appetizer portion for $16. Took over 10 minutes to even get a drink. Service was less than professional. We won't be back but now we know.

Amazing meal with even better service. New to Sarasota and thought we would try it out and boy were we blown away! Not only did it feel like you were part of a family in just talking to the owner (Fay) and the bartender but it just kept getting better. Great beer selection was made even better by helpful advice from Fay. But topping that was the fact that the food was so delicious. I got the Guinness dip which was extremely delicious to the last bite and my girlfriend got the fish bites (suggested by Fay) that was even better than my meal! I believe we would have walked out with a smile even if the food was disgusting but to our delight we left with a smile from ear to ear. This will definitely be my new neighborhood spot and I look forward to going back!

This was a very good pub that was recommended to me by a co-worker that is from Britain. I ordered the Shepard Pie while the other people I was with ordered the fish and chips. The pie was full of lamb meat and covered in cheese. Almost perfection. The fish was served on newspaper with malt vinegar on the table and ready to go. Though it was a little pricey, it was well worth the money. My wife had the Sangria and it was out of this world. The beer was excellent with 18 kinds on draft. We will definitely be coming back!

White Horse is fantastic; the menu is better than many of the pubs we visited in the UK! The decor is more authentic than most British pubs in the US, and it's clean and friendly. For a special treat, go on a Sunday and get the Sunday Roast!

I frequent this place regularly as it is convenient for our group of friends. I find myself criticizing many aspects of this restaurant but overall it's a good place. Great selection of beer and most of the food is good. They recently updated their menu and prices a few months ago and still have not updated the menu to reflect a few increased prices and new items. I've had a decent variety from their menu. The pizzas are decent, and a good deal on Tuesdays, though they are often out of some of the toppings I want. The white horse burger is delicious. Their Reubens are also very good. Try the turkey Reuben, one of the aforementioned unlisted new items. Fish and chips are average, which wouldn't be bad if they were cheaper. The chips (fries), steak and Idaho, aren't that good, just your typical frozen bar fries. I always sub the crisps which I think are very tasty. One of my favorite items on the menu is the hazelnut and strawberry salad though it's overpriced and higher than what is listed on the outdated menu. Despite some criticisms of the food, I'm usually happy with what I get. The staff of the place are fantastic. They are very friendly and chatty and the place has a good atmosphere.

My husband spent many of his childhood years growing up in the English countryside, and he has fond memories of the British cuisine, bangers and mash in particular. When we stumbled upon The White Horse Pub, we decided to give it a whirl. The interior decor is typical and pub-like, with dark wood and artwork of white horses lining the walls. Our waitress even had an authentic British accent, I felt like we were in Liverpool. We started with the sausage rolls which were served with a ketchup/vinegar tasting sauce. As much as I love the taste of sausage on my tongue, these were simply okay...not sure if I would indulge again. I washed the sausage down with some house wine, naturally. For my entree, I ordered the Beef & Guinness Pie which was topped with a puff pastry. It was quite delicious, and my husband stole the entire crock off my plate and ate it all himself, leaving the hamburger he ordered in the dust. His hamburger was served on toasted bread which had a strong buttery taste to it, so if you don't like your buns buttered, you may want to request them to leave it off. For dessert, my husband ordered some kind of apple cobbler, crumble, or pie, but at this point, I was three sheets to the wind, so I have no clue. He liked it! Overall, decent food. I would come again, but maybe hang out at the bar....chat with some locals...do some inappropriate staring....the usual.

I'd like to be able to recommend this place, but can't. I came in on a Yelp incentive - a free Bud Light draft. The draft was fine, as was the service. Big points taken away for value. My total for Sheppard's Pie and one Bud Light (I bought one too) was $19.26. If the portion was large, or the quality very high - the cost would be justified. Unfortunately, it was neither. The SP was served in a French onion soup bowl and served with a scoop of peas. I guess someone has to pay for all that charm...

First off, the staff if superb. Everyone is very friendly and the weekday special isn't too shabby at all. Atmosphere is cozy and the music selection was spot on.

Because of Yelp my business partner and I tried The White Horse Pub for lunch. What a surprise! The place was clean, inviting and the wait staff superb. This was completely overshadowed by the owner Fay, who put this culinary experience over the top. There are many places that cook amazing food, most places in Nice, France for example, but the the service can make or break a meal. The White Horse Pub is an example of what can be done with a great wait staff, caring owner, and delicious food. If the food from the Brits does not excite you try Curry night! Something that I will be sure to enjoy then next time I am in Sarasota! Oh, yeah... the food is great :)

Love the idea. The beer flight sampler is a must for any beer-lover. We didn't eat, but the entrees look yummy. Live music on Friday night is cool. And we enjoy sitting outside.

I love White Horse Pub. I read other reviews that said that the food was too expensive. For Sarasota, I did not find that to be true at all. In fact, it's one of the few places to get delicious, British-style food at a reasonable price. The beer selection is quite good. The staff is always friendly. I like the idea of bringing a whole caraffe of ginger ale to the table when we order it. It's just comforting. It's good, comforting food in a similar atmosphere.

Directions: This is a restaurant next to a movie theater, a gym and a pet store. Now that you can find it I will give you the lowdown. We have been here 3 times. Twice to eat and another time just to get a drink. They only serve beer and wine. I did not know this until I ordered a Captain and Coke and she shot me down. They did a good job with the outside seating area. Hanging plants, umbrellas, Christmas lights etc. They are able to almost hide the fact you are sitting in a busy parking lot. Cars will come straight at you until...they turn hard left. Ewwwww scary. The regular menu is good and service on all 3 trips was very good. We went on a Thursday night for "Curry" night to get our Indian on. Dreadful failure. All of it was just...no good. We were sad because we thought it would at least be up to par with the regular menu but we were mistaken. We will not be going back for that. Overall a nice bar. Nothing amazing....and the birds from the pet store make a lot of noise.

Visiting from DC and we wanted good beer and fish and chips after a round of golf so we tried this place thanks to Yelp reviews. My husband and I split a large salad (White horse salad) that was filled with a mix of spring greens and huge chunks of veggies. We also split a large Fish and Chips which were very good. Not too greasy or over battered and a generous portion of cod for both of us. The only down side was no liquor so my husband didn't get his whiskey he wanted, but the impromptu trivia night made up for it and was a fun way to burn some time.

I had dinner there last night with my boyfriend. Our server was great and the food was very good. Great neighborhood atmosphere and the bar area was busy, as well as the outside patio. I had the fish and chips, it was very good!! My boyfriend had a sandwich with chicken ham and egg, which he enjoyed as well. Our food came out fast and our server was prompt to fill refills and checked back frequently. We shared the moose cake which was delish!!!! I used the coupon on my iphone with no problem. We will definitely be back to support the local business.

I had dinner at this pub on a Thursday night when visiting a friend who lives in the area. They were regulars, so we all nice conversations with the bartender--who was very friendly. My friends just moved to Sarasota recently. They said the only friend they've made so far is the bartender here--they go to to this pub several times a week. I wasn't there for it, but apparently they have trivia also. Dinner service was very quick and the food was good. They had an impressive selection of on tap beers.

I thought it was pretty good, People were all very friendly and attentive. Good fish and chips, English breakfast was great and hubby got a black and tan. They got us in and out quickly because we were on a limited time frame trying to get to a movie. Friendly with our 2 kids and had a decent kids menu. When we came out of the movies there was a live band playing-maybe next time we can go for that?

What a surprise. Believe in serendipity when it hits!! Didn't wan't to wait 90 minutes at Outback at 6PM on Saturday night so we (4 of us) walked over to the White Horse Pub (says British Pub on sign) and were seated immediately even though they were about 90% full. The wait staff was courteous, knowledgeable and prompt with our beverage order and accurately described several "strange to us" menu items. Every meal was excellent, served hot from the oven and was attractively presented. To top it off, it was my birthday so the manager brought over a complimentary chocolate fudge cake topped with real cream and strawberries + 4 spoons. Will definitely return many times.

I really enjoyed the décor and overall feel of the place. If you cannot guess, it is mostly old drawings of horses and carriages. Also, most of the customers are European, but also consider the time of year it is- and it gives you a novel and more genuine experience. The outside seating looks really relaxing and that is where most of the patrons resided. If you are looking for a quick pour, then I recommend taking your glass directly to the bar for fills and letting the waitress just take care of your food order. The beer selection on tap is very impressive for such a hidden place. I am really surprised to not see more customers and beer aficionados trying out what they have to offer. A pint here will only set you back about $4, even of the good stuff like Hobgoblin, Old Speckled Hen, Boddingtons, Bass, and some really good Scottish stuff I cannot remember the name of at the moment (all I remember was that it tasted comforting). My beloved Frambois was only $6 per bottle (not on tap), when normally I would pay $8.99 for it at the liquor store, and at most pubs $12, but not here. I consider it 2-4-1 for that price. The food here, I cannot speak for, we were snacky so we ordered some fries with cheese and bacon- they were ok, what you would expect for pub food. The menu has all types of sausages and savory pies, even some salads. Be prepared to wait on the food. Within the same shopping center is a decent dollar theater, a really good pizza place, an ice cream shop, and a Thai place I have yet to try. So, if you are not into eating the pub food, there are other options of meals and things to do beforehand. Most of the complaints I have read are regarding their slow service or lack thereof. Just keep in mind that for an entire restaurant there is only one cook, one waitress, and one bartender. Or at least that was the staffing when I was there on a Saturday night, which was odd, but seemed to work for them. If you sit at the bar or any of the high-top tables, then you will be served meal and drinks by the bartender, which is often faster, since you are in view. If you are a newbies, like us, sit at the bar and chat it up- then receive a proper pint.

So...the beer was good... Food was ok...if you are hungry enough you'll eat anything...I suppose. I had the white horse burger. It was HUGE and so greasy..but not in a good way. The food is sooooo expensive for what it is. I could've went to Outback and had a steak and it would've been cheaper. I'd go for a beer again but would pass on the overpriced food.

My first visit was on a Saturday evening with friends. The friendly atmosphere was immediately evident. The staff and owner were very friendly and attentive to guests. I returned a few days later for dinner. The food was outstanding. The theme was wine down Wednesday. Tapas and home made sangria with execllent musicians playing. Very friendly, nice, relaxing place to just stop in or stay for a while. A new favorite for me.

Pizza is great. Nice selection of beers. Definitely not a place for a first date but great for some beer, wings, pizza. On this particular night ithe service was really awful. Perhaps you need to be a regular to get good service. Not the cleanest carpet so keep your handbag off the floor. :-))

My husband and I decided to stop in for a late lunch on 2/19/12. There were a few patrons at the outside tables, 1 person at the bar and no other diners in the dining room in which we were seated. We were given our menus, told of the Sunday roast specials. We were impressed with the beer selection and each ordered a beer, which were promptly delivered. That is where the good service ended. We placed our food orders, the roast pork dinner for me and the Guinness prime rib dip sandwich for my husband. About 15 minutes later the server walked by and asked me if I wanted another Newcastle, I declined and asked for a water. She ignored my husbands almost empty beer glass. We did not receive our food for another 15 minutes at which time the waitress said our water"s" were at the bar and she would be back with them. I said, actually he would like another beer, which was brought to him about 5 minutes later. I still had not received my water. The food was mediocre at best. My vegetables were cold, my pork too salty and my husbands prime rib sandwich was overcooked shaved steak at best. I finally received my glass of water about 10 minutes into eating. We then sat at the table for another 10-15 minutes with no visit from the server. My husband went to the bar to get and pay the bill. Upon leaving the restaurant I went onto yelp to read other reviews and was shocked to see so many positive ones. Either we went on a really bad day or the majority of people reviewing have very low expectations. If you are in the University/Lakewood Ranch area drive a few miles east to Main Street Lakewood Ranch and visit MacAllisters, where the food is always good and the staff accommodating and friendly.
