My partner and I discovered this place a couple of years ago on our first trip to Sarasota. The place is AMAZING! The food is always superb! The setting is beautiful and the owners are very warm and gracious. We've eaten here many times since then and we look forward to going back again and again!! LOVE Lavanda!!!!!!!!

Quiet and romantic setting. Friendly and attentive service. Dinner rolls were warm, soft and delicious. Salad was nice size, fresh and tasty. Had the duck which was prepared just right: not too dry but crispy skin. Would recommend positively for nice dining experience.

The setting of Lavanda is lovely. The restaurant's wrap-around porch in the Towles Court Arts District is one of the most peaceful places to eat in Sarasota. It's almost charming enough to not notice that we are, by about 35 years, the youngest people dining here. It was my birthday, and Gabriel had taken me, by request, to this restaurant that I'd heard so much about. For someone who reads and writes reviews as frequently as I do, it is no one's fault but my own that while the overall ratings for Lavanda are excellent, I ignored the fact that it's simply not my taste. My favorite meals are inventive, exciting, unique. The food at Lavanda is classic, traditional, boring, bland. As soon as I looked over the menu I was concerned. Nothing on this list sounded at all inspired or new. This is the kind of food that feeds (and impresses!) the over 70 crowd who remembers old New York eateries for it's dimly lit, stodgy, upper crust predictability and not for it's cutting edge, melting pot, thrilling creativity. I started with a half-size appetizer. (something worth noting is that I really appreciate half-sizes as an option. I often want a taste and not a filling first course) Steamed large shrimp over baby spinach, artichoke hearts, mandarin slices and toasted pine nuts drizzled with tahini tamarind dressing. The shrimp were large and fresh and the salad itself was a nice mix of flavors and textures- especially the fresh mandarin orange wedges and creamy dressing. There was nothing wrong with this salad- but I did not expect that it would be the best part of my meal. Gabriel had the warm mozzarella with tomato sauce started and I was not particularly impressed. This was not fresh, homemade mozzarella from what I could tell- and if it was, they should really take some brush-up lessons from the amazing owners at Mozzarella Fella on Main St. The tomato sauce was fine- but nothing special. The extra bread they brought us after we'd finished the 2 warm rolls they'd allotted us, was cold. For my entrée, I had the scallops sautéed with cream, Amaretto and almonds with mashed potatoes and an odd spinach/chick pea side. Who puts chick peas with spinach on the side of scallops and mashed potatoes? That was just a very weird choice that really didn't go with the meal at all. The scallops were fine- the mashed potatoes were good, the spinach side was just nothing but strange. Overall, it's not that the food was bad, it was just so totally hum-ho, boring, sleepy, uninspired. For dessert, we shared the lemon souffle and frankly, it was not worth it. I am VERY much a dessert person, so when a dessert makes me say 'meh', you know it's pretty bad. The souffle was denser and wetter than it should have been, the flavor was more bland, than lemony, and the whole thing had nothing at all interesting about it. Just total blah. Let's go home to have some ice cream instead.

Love Lavanda! It is our favorite local/downtown Sarasota restaurant for a quiet, intimate meal. Hidden away in Towles Court, it's worth finding. Always greeted warmly by Heidi and Dino (owners/chef). We consistently find the food spectacular with fresh and clean flavors. The dishes aren't muted or destroyed by extra ingredients or unnecessary seasonings. Although some may find the menu limited, it's one of the things we appreciate. Each option is quick to become a favorite and one you wouldn't want to see replaced or disappear because they're always done so well. We personally enjoy the intimacy that their "cellphone free" atmosphere provides, and even find charm in the character of the stemware. Everything is just done so well. We're always looking for our next special occasion to spend at this special restaurant.

I just can't imagine anyone giving this restaurant a negative review. It is simply one of the best experiences I've had at any restaurant and I'm very VERY picky about food and service. The ambiance is quiet so that you can have a civilized conversation without shouting over others. In the European tradition, they don't open for dinner until 6 because Europeans eat later than Americans. Everything is cooked fresh and served when it is ready to be served, not when they feel like it; I had a pork tenderloin appetizer with spinach leaves and organic salmon for my entree finished off with chocolate cake. The wine list is amazing. We had a Pinot from the Cotes du Rhone region of France. It was a 2010 that was about eight months from being perfect. Still outstanding. I don't know why some people had bad experiences here but mine was truly outstanding. I almost never give five stars but in this case, they earned it!

This is probably one of the WORST dining experience we have ever had in Sarasota. The waitress was rude and had the personality of a doorknob. She never smiled once. We had a party of 4 and 2 of us ordered the scallops--the waitress came over and said they only had one order left--it was still fairly early. The food was terrible and overpriced. We don't know how this place even stays in business. Small portions, overcooked and undercooked. There were very few people in the restaurant for a Saturday night. They have a policy and add 18% to your bill. This was very surprising to us as they did not inform us until we complained after they ran the credit card. The response from the owner was "it's in the fine print on the menu". We know why they do this, the waitress and staff are so rude they would never make a tip without adding it to the bill. We looked at the menu for the food selection--not looking for "fine print" about adding 18% to everyone's bill. The owner told us that is standard---we said it is not standard other than perhaps large parties of 6 or more. They were not even apologetic --just rude. After our small meals, we ordered dessert. We had the chocolate dessert--it cost $9. They brought us a sliver of this horrible, stale dessert. If the food was free, we would never return to Lavanda. Would never recommend this restaurant to anyone!!!

Gorgeous setting, sumptuous food, old world charm.... My parents wanted me to experience some of the old world charm of Sarasota, so they took me here for dinner. Nestled into the artist colony at Towles Court, the decor and ambiance are whimsical and a visual delight. Inside and outside Lavanda one sees art, mosaics, stunning foliage and unusually painted homes and gardens. The inside of Lavanda is painted egg yolk yellow, and the waitress wears a yellow apron. (If you don't like yellow, don't come here!) We enjoyed our food immensely, breast of duck, avocado soup, a lovely dry Malbec all made the evening a delightful, relaxing dining experience for me. (Bonus: my mother used her certificate from restaurant.com so we enjoyed a steep discount for the meal). No complaints from my parents, except the waitress never brought my mother a little more cherry sauce for her duck. That was the only flaw for this dinner. Also a nice spot for a business lunch or special occasion (would not consider this a kid friendly place, there is a quiet, elegant atmosphere here).

First time at Lavanda - Excellent food - I had the Lamb Chops, my wife had the Salmon - both as good as we have ever had anywhere. Great service, nice setting, decent price. Wonderful dining experience - My highest recommendation. We loved it and will definitely be back.

The food was good but not that flavorful. Salmon had no flavor. I cannot recommend this as a place with great sauces The real problem was the number of rules, which made you feel unwelcome. 1. Credit card to reserve and $25 per person if you cancelled. 2. Turn off cell phones written on the menu (not a sign on the door). 3. Cannot order an appetizer as your entree. 4. Split checks require 18% tip added to all checks. 5. Split entree is $8 although potatoes and vegs come with the entree. When I go out it is because I want to be waited on to get what I would like. This place doesn't allow that. The setting is lovely.

Recent lunch on the veranda at Lavanda in Towles Court. Wonderful setting, away from traffic and crowds. Great menu, served in very reasonable time, very good, abundant salad, unobtrusive service that was very accommodating. Good wine by the glass, no hurrying of diners. Have been here for dinner, too - still good service and food. We will definitely be back.

Good food, mediocre service, limited menu. Good duck, salmon and steak. Wine served too warm. Atmosphere good for breakfast or lunch.

Our first visit to Sarasota. We ate lunch at Lavanda with some Sarasota natives who are familiar with the neighborhood. It was a lovely setting and delicious food. I had the lamb sandwich with a great sauce. Others at our table had the shrimp salad which also looked great. Desserts were good size to serve two and delicious, too! This is on my "must return" list!!
