Omg this place is a hidden little gem- the margaritas are so good- light and fresh- and the food is amazing- very authentic with very fresh ingredients! We are from Ohio and come here every time we visit Sarasota!

Small place in a strip mall but very good! We were seated right away. The chips were a little stale but we told them and they brought fresh, hot chips which they make in house and they were great! Salsa was also house made and HOT (which I don't do), but everyone else liked it. Our table had chicken fajitas and a veggie burrito and both were really good! Service was great, theyv really seem to care and want you to enjoy your meal. They also gave us free brownie bites as a welcome gift for our first visit and they were delicious! Highly recommend!

This place is one of my favorites. The food is authentic. It's fresh and affordable. You can really tell the chef and owners put their heart into thus place. It's small and quaint, but don't let that sway you. The food is superb.

Just ate there about 30 mins ago, was excellent! I loved the food was very yummy! Friendly staff, nice little restaurant. Definitely come check it out if you are in Sarasota. But if you have a large group call ahead to make reservations because it is small.

I decided to give this place a try after reading some of the other reviews and seeing the pictures others have posted and I was definitely not disappointed. This may be the best Mexican restaurant in all of Sarasota. It's a bit of a small place, so make sure you get there early as seating does fill up quickly during dinner hours. Service here was phenomenal, but the food was even better! I highly recommend the chicken fajita burrito!

SOO GOOD! The margaritas are great! The food is authentic and you can taste it in every bite! and the servers are super welcoming and aware of their customers! Would recommend this place for everyone and anyone that is looking for a nice mexican restaurant that is REALLY mexican

First time here. Authentic, delicious. A combination that's impossible to find when looking mexican in sarasota. The sangria and margaritas are both wine-based, with great flavor. The salsa and queso were amazing. The chicken and shrimp fajita burrito had tons of flavor. I will definitely make the 40 minute trip back.

First thought to mind-not impressed. Ordered the quesadilla's one chicken and one steak. If you're looking for anything more than meat and cheese this won't cut it. A bit disappointed. Will try other local restaurants but not this one again.

Some of the freshest Mexican food I've ever had anywhere. This has become an annual stop for us during vacation time. You won't be disappointed. I recommend the Guadalajara plate w/ chicken.

We arrived tonight without a reservation (two of us), around 6. We found El Toro on line after going to another place and finding it way too busy! We were seated in about 10 minutes and were greeted by the wonderful owner Rubin. They were busy, but we got exceptional service and great food. It was our first time and got our darling complimentary dessert!!! The wine margaritas were the best either of us ever had (gotta get that recipe). Thank you Rubin and everyone for an exceptional dinner and the first of many times since we have recently moved here full time.

Dinner with friends and we all tried something new. Chips and salsa were welcoming. Dinner was served very quickly and very hot. Guadalahara plate, chicken burrito and huevos rancheros. Each meal was simply delicious. The serving staff was pleasant and helpful. This meal was crazy good.

I really like this place! I've eaten in once -solo, and take out another time. Take out Mexican is difficult because visually it's just not that appealing when it's in a white styrofoam takeout box! But, they are RIDICULOUSLY friendly! I really felt the "family" vibe - don't know if it is actually family though. The food is very fresh, flavourful and not over seasoned. Homemade salsa and guacamole, perfect! Small and cute interior, perfect for a casual dinner.

Delicious! I went this Saturday and lucked out that they were having a quiet evening because of the weather. The food was amazing and HUGE. My favorite by far was the amazing 5 Queso Dip. Even though I drove in from Apollo Beach/Ruskin area (about 40 miles north) I definitely will be back regularly.

Decent food. Had the chicken tacos and steak tacos. Not sure if the food is worth the price. Good service and fast.

  • Amy B.

Great food, friendly service, and the best margarita I've had in a long time! It's a small but quaint little restaurant where the owner personally greats you. It was our first visit so we were treated with a complimentary dessert. We will be back!

  • Selmy B.

Fresh Mexican each and every time. This not a franchise. It is privately owned and the owner Ruben is present to enhance the experience. A truly friendly and local hub for the freshest and most delicious authentic Mexican meal. Great for couples, kids, or a large group. All can be accommodated; however patience is important. There are approximately 12 tables so come for lunch or dinner, you will not be disappointed. Average meal is $12 and it includes refried beans and rice. Trust me you will leave with a huge smile.

Fresh, Authentic and Family Owned! The best Mexican we have ever had. Try the cinco queso. It is unique from any I have had.

For starters I think Dawn M's review and for that matter maybe a few of the negative reviews are flawed by the fact that there are two Mexican joints in this plaza. She may have saw the name on the sign and the address and assumed the loud and obnoxious Mexican place was toro bravo. However it is not. Toro bravo doesn't rely on heavy signage screaming look at me to get it's point across. The give away that her review was misinformed was she mentions a bartender which bravo does not have. It was clear when we walked by the the two restaurants which was quality and which wasn't. The other place on a Tuesday at dinner time had absolutely no one there while bravo had one table open. The wife and I visited on our last trip down this way and swore we would return on this trip, and return we did. The service was still exceptional. The food was still great. Always a smile on the staffs faces and they treat you like family. We have only been twice and both times they have comp'd us a dessert. First time merely cause it was our first time there. Every time I come to Sarasota I will make it a point to eat here at least once.

Our first trip here and it was on cinco de mayo. We had a warm greeting quickly followed by a trivia contest/drawing for all tables to win shirts and prizes thanking everyone for coming in. We received complimentary salsa and chips then followed by genuine mexican lunch. We had the fajita burritos. Excellent. They care about the customers. The only disappointment at all is the location in an uninviting strip mall. They make the best of it however.

  • Jenna S.

Chose this place based on the rave Yelp reviews, and we were very pleased. The food was really good--excellent chicken fajitas. But we were surprised to hear they do not have a liquor license, which means no margaritas. They offer a wine margarita, but for real marg-lovers like us, it didn't satisfy our craving. Otherwise though we had a great meal.

The best Mexican restaurant in Sarasota hands down. I had the Tampiqueno Steak it was delicious the sauce was to die for. The taste of real home made food bursting with flavor. Skip the chain Mexican restaurants.

  • Michael O.

Who doesn't like a delicious home cooked meal? This place makes some darn good fresh non greasy authentic Mexican food and it goes down smooth. Salsa and chips were amazing as were are plates. Chicken enchiladas were so good as was the chicken burrito which was quite big and delicious. When in Sarasota enjoy a delicious fresh meal at El Toro Bravo. Thanks Pedro for the excellent service!

  • Amy P.

Love this place! We have been here a few times. The food and service is amazing. The owner comes out to talk with the patrons and is oft seen running the floor. Great team! Be aware there is no liquor license, but they do serve premixed margs and beer.

  • Steve G.

A quick update -- still good. Had the Cinco Queso tonight and followed that up with the Guadalajara Platter. Too much food! Even the small Cinco Queso was a large bowl of thick chewy cheese and spicy salsa. Great! The Guadalajara is a mess on the plate, but man, it hits the spot as you dig through layers of fresh guac and sour cream to cool lettuce and tomatoes to the chicken or beef, melted cheese, beans, rice and finally soggy tortilla. The perfect hangover dish!

The best Mexican food In Sarasota, Everything is so fresh and the entire staff is amazing to their customers. every time i go to the restaurant it is full of happy people. MUST try it, I bring everyone i know there, It is THAT good

Some of the greatest Mexican food you will ever eat. You can tell everything is very "home made". Steak fajitas are out of this world. On top of that the salsa you get to start never fails. I've been coming here for years and will keep coming. Ask to meet the owned Ruben some time. He is the nicest guy you will ever meet.

  • Marcie H.

Great food and great service. We were fortunate enough to been waited on by the chef/owner because they were a little short staffed. He was a delight and the food was the best. The restaurant is rather small. He said if you come between 5;30-7 you will have a hard time herringbone a table but if you wait until after 7:30 you should have no problem. They also take reservations. Only negative is they only have beer and wine.

  • Jo K.

My husband and I are from the San Diego area and were looking for some decent Mexican food - well we found it. Now it's not Baja style, it's New Mexico (Sonora style, I think), but it was the most like what we were used to in California. We were very please!! The service was outstanding and the place was packed on a Thursday night. I'm told in snowbird season, you must make a reservation or you may not get a table. Wonderful place - we will definitely be back again.

+1 for cleanliness +1 for reasonable prices +1 for ambiance +1 for menu selection -1 for service -1 for incorrect bill/check -2 for both people getting post-dinner IBS Sorry, gang ... if there was a "0", you'd have earned it.

Salsa that comes with the chips, absolutely delicious. Some of the best I've had. I ordered the enchilada plate. I asked for both the green and red sauce. This is where it gets bittersweet. I love cheese...but wow, the cheese overpowered everything. And the green sauce was not really green...seemed cheesy with chunks of poblano? I couldn't taste it. It just didn't have much flavor. The red sauce was okay. I've had far better and a lot worse. The plate was just super oily. Gross. All in all , it is sweet little place, pretty good service, and I'd eat there again when in Sarasota. But may order something else (enchiladas are always a favorite though). Fair prices and a plate full of food.

LOVE this place! I grew up in Sarasota, but now live in NYC. Whenever I am home to visit my family, this is one of my first stops. The food is better than any Mexican food I've had in NYC and is worth a visit!

Visiting from out of town and wanted some Mexican. We came in shortly before closing but they were gracious and welcomed us in. Pedro took great care of us and they even gave us a free dessert. Definitely recommend.

I stopped in here for dinner with my fiancé while we were in town visiting relatives, and we had a very enjoyable (if somewhat average) meal together. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and our waitress was absolutely lovely. This is a small, cozy little nook of a place, so if you are with a group I'd definitely call ahead of time and reserve tables. As there were only two of us, we were seated immediately. We both enjoyed all of the foods that we tried from appetizers, to entrees, and down to the complimentary dessert that we were given as it was our first visit. The appetizers were better than the entrees. Food was decent, but it wasn't so good that it was borderline sexual or anything. I'm always on the lookout for a sensual food encounter, ya know? I loved the dessert! Maybe because it was free? It was both visually appealing (come on, who doesn't squeal over a good sauce doodle- especially when it is sweet and chocolatey) and tasty. The cooking style wasn't exactly what we expected, and was a tad more on the Tex-Mex side, but it was still decent. I always cringe when reviewers throw the word "authentic" into their missives, because white Americans that have never visited Mexico, China, Cuba, Japan, Thailand, etc. should realize that ethnic foods aren't prepared only one way, and are usually Americanized to suit the tastes of the general population in the states. I digress. I'd maybe give this place three and a half stars just cause of the brownie doodle dessert, but Yelp won't let us give partial stars. Great ambiance, and we may return in the future. Unless we can find something better. In that case we'll have to cut our losses and start seeing other people, El Toro. That's just the way it is. I'm fairly certain the free dessert thing causes people to give this place better reviews than it may actually deserve. Still longing for truly great Mexican food in Sarasota, and am wondering if people here have ever experienced off the fricken chain Mexican cuisine based off of the reviews that I see for average sorts of places. Meh.

The best Mexican food ever! I'm from southern California and know good, authentic Mexican food. Try the Chili Colorado, fajitas, enchiladas, hueves rancheros - everything is great, including the chips and salsa!

  • Michael S.

The best Huevos Rancheros ever! Everything we've had has been delicious. The people are so friendly. The owner has served us on several occasions. He is truly the nicest guy! Child has food allergies and they were so accommodating. There is always a constant flow of patrons. Highly recommend!

  • Roxanna W.

I wish I could give 1/2 stars bc I'd certainly give this place 4.5 stars! As for the food, it was very flavorful, served fresh and piping hot, and it was quick! But more important than all that, I have major food allergies and the owner himself came out and spoke to me to find out specifically what I can and cannot have and suprisingly I was able to have quite a bit on the menu. As well as checking in on me during my meal. The people working there were friendly, helpful, and just as nice as can be. They were packed but we were still seated quickly. And we noticed they had tons of regulars there so that's always a great sign! Good mexican food has been hard to come by here but we will be going back here again for sure!

The absolute best. A warm charm and family atmosphere. The staff and cooks are amazing. Get anything shrimp you will love it. The owner made us a special dessert on him. Do not hesitate. It is out of this world. Be sure to make reservations. Enjoy!!!! I know u will.

  • Norman D.

Very friendly and attentive staff. I think they are all family. They know the menu inside and out and offer great recommendations. The chile releno is probably the best I've ever had. They offer a very nice ribeye steak prepared with a Mexican flair that I enjoy along with the traditional staples. No hard liquor but they do a great job with their beer and wine selection.

    (4)
  • Jessica G.

Yummy food. Quick service. Always busy when we go. Small inside. Friendly servers. Owner always present greeting and serving. The ladies in the kitchen are the hidden treasure-you'll catch a glimpse of them on your way to the bathroom if you peek into kitchen. I usually get a combo platter or shrimp fajitas. Guac is fresh. Beer and wine only but they do have a wine margarita that is tasty. Kid's meals, too. They sent out a "welcome" plate for dessert-deep fried brownies. Try it if you're in the mood for Mexican!

We love this little gem in Sarasota. We drive from Tampa regularly just to eat at El Toro Bravo. The food is very flavorful and is not heavy like most Mexican food. The owner Rubin and his family are an absolute delight and they always make you feel welcome. Love the steak fajitas and the salsa is amazing! It looks like a hole in the wall from the street, but don't be fooled....it's delicious inside!

I came to el toro bravo because i was gracefully given a gift certificate for Christmas. I would have never seen this place because it is in a strip mall with 6 other restaurants including another Mexican place. I work for a lovely family (who gave me the gift) and we run a restaurant so i had big expectations. My girlfriend and I decided to invite my parents so we made a reservation for 6pm. As my girl and I approached we were promptly greeted and told it was to early to be sat before our whole party had arrived. Understandable but our table was ready and waiting. Ill give them a pass on this one. As we finally sat, We were at a table for 6 people in a crowded and very noisy dining room. I don't mind the noise as it usually shows me to an exciting place that I must try. Our waiter was kind and got us our drinks. He seemed knowledgeable of the menu and was very courteous. Props to him. The chips and salsa were sub par at best. the chips cold and the salsa tasting only of chili powder. Not to mention only one basket at our giant table, so the grasping for the last chip ensued. So here is where the rubber meets the road, we ordered off the standard burrito, enchilada, taco type menu. After the 35 minute wait, our food arrives, 1 plate at a time. After we all have our meals, eating can finally start. As far as the food goes, presentation is el toro bravos strongest suit. Seasoning and flavor is on of the weakest ideals along with basic customer service. My steak burrito with red sauce looked fantastic but tasted like the used canned beans. Now I know canned beans can be a great product but they make this magic stuff called cumin and salt that can really enhance things. My overall experience was this, Service: VERY poor, inattentive and low skill. Food: Mediocre at best, at least Tijuana flats has a hot sauce bar. Atmosphere: not worth putting up with. I would not go back and I would not recommend this place. the 63 dollars plus 11 dollar tip would have been better spent at Tijuana flats. same loud atmosphere and faster service with better flavors for less money. Sorry EL TORO. I really wanted to like you.

One of the best I've ever been to the salsa is amazing and the chicken fajita best ever. Everything made from scratch you really have to try the chicken so tender

I can not say enough good things about this place. It is a very small place so first timers do not be fooled. The food is delicious, the service is always on point, and the owners care so much about their customers.

This place is awesome. Was in Siesta Key on vacation and went here with my wife for dinner. A casual Mexican restaurant located in a strip mall. We were greeted by Ruben, the very friendly owner. Immediately shown to our table. The chips and homemade salsa they put on the table is the best I have had. We split the queso appetizer and we both liked it. I had the chicken fajitas which were really good. The homemade guacamole is awesome. Everything we had was great. Service was attentive and Ruben the owner checked on us more than once. I highly recommend this place.

This place is amazing! Delicious authentic food, hot, fresh, and seemingly home made. The head cook is the owner of the restaurant, and his daughter works there too, very cozy. Delicious home made salsa, wish they had a full bar for margaritas, but still a great place to kick back! Owner made the bf and I a special desert since it was our first time, it was beautiful, and so sweet. Will definitely be back. Only downside is the alcohol situation.

We have been here many times. Everything is homemade from scratch, with TLC. Best in class in my opinion. One of my favs: checken fajitas, but literally everything is delicious and consistently outstanding.

Great chile rellenos! This is one of the most authentic Mexican restaurants in the city.....Ruben, the owner is almost always on hand: nice guy. Cozy restaurant and worth trying!

Do not be put off by the location in a strip shopping center. If you want great food, amazing, friendly service and reasonable prices this is the place for you. We were greeted by a warm and lovely hostess who showed us right to our table. The restaurant was packed so I was glad I had a reservation. The complimentary tacos were very fresh and the salsa was fantastic. I loved both our dishes but I would rave about the tilapia and mango dressing with fried plantains. We were surprised by a superb fried brownie dessert brought to our table without a charge because we were first time customers. I could tell that many of the customers seemed like regulars which to me is always a great sign. I can't think of anything but positives about this resaurant.

  • Nazlo N.

I love this place. It's small & cozy with friendly service and great Mexican (New Mex/Tex) food. Their enchiladas are excellent. Try Christmas-style. As a Texan now living on the East Coast, I think this place has the best Mexican food east of the Sabine River. BTW - Toro Bravo is a family place, and doesn't have a bar or bartender, so don't confuse it with the taqueria/bar in the same strip center

I am a graduate of New College of Florida. This was my favorite restaurant for the three years I was at that school. There are lots of great choices, the food is affordable, and the fajitas are excellent. Excellent features include: unlimited chips and salsa free brownie dessert for first time customers the sizzling plate of fajitas and how amazing it smells the pants on the male owner of the restaurant you can get full as hell, so its perfect for hungry college kids. In fact I first went there because my roommate's sister did some yelp reconnaissance on the town and found this place at the top, so I though I would return the yelp love. You should go there. Your nan should retire to Sarasota and then also go there. 60 years from now I will do the same thing.

have been back about every other month since my first review. My fears about its popularity have come true- people had to wait last night. However, they do take reservations. I'd recommend that Yelp readers call them for a reservation before visiting.

We are from the Chicago area, and as good as the Mexican fare is in the Chicagoland area, this little gem we've discovered while on our family vacation in Siesta Key, was a very pleasant surprise. The food was exceptionally fresh and well-prepared. My wife's shrimp fajitas were superb, my steak burrito was one of the best I've had in recent memory. And the kids were quite satisfied with their beef tacos and chicken burritos. The guac starter is a must. Service was excellent and the atmosphere very authentic and cozy; certainly not fancy. We loved the colorful artwork of bulls and bullfighting. Highly recommend it for casual, Mexican dining experience.

We arrived after 8:00 on a weekday and found a pretty full dining room. We love, love, love the cinco queso. We had the Veracruz platter which had a wide selection, from enchildas, chili relleno, and beef taco, beans and rice. Loved everything on the plate. Hostess (possibly the owner) and waitress made us feel very welcome on our first visit. Only complaint was the dining room was a bit warm. We are looking forward to becoming regulars and to bringing out of town guests to El Toro to sample the great food.

Even though I live in Englewood, about 35 miles away from this restaurant, I am happy to make the trip once a week to have lunch or dinner there. This is SOUTHWEST MEXICAN CUISINE at its very best. Always fresh ingredients. Yes, you have to wait for your order to be cooked, since it's not precooked and sitting on a stove like in so many other establishments. Service is fantastic, owners are awesome and make you feel like family. My husband and I discovered this place less than 3 years ago, but even though he was killed in a horrible accident, I still make it my business to go to this fabulous eatery at least once a week. Can't recommend it enough!!!!

  • Ken N.

My girlfriend and I stopped in based on other Yelp recommendations and we were not disappointed. The decor is sparse, but the service was good and the food was better! I ordered the Fajita Burrito and my girlfriend ordered Chicken Fajitas. The food arrived hot and made from fresh ingredients. The guacamole was awesome (did I mention the ingredients are fresh?!?). The Fajita Burrito was good, but the Fajitas were superb! The only thing I would change is their basic salsa... I would prefer that it be cooler to the palate (not everyone likes spicy foods as much as me)... perhaps more chunky tomatoes and cilantro. If you like good service, fresh (hot) food, and good prices, I HIGHLY recommend El Toro Bravo.

    (4)
  • Kim S.

A little disappointed. Ive been wanting to try this place for a long time. I arrived as a solo diner. There were empty tables, but nothing inside for a solo diner. I was offered a table outside (August in FL) next to the parking lot. I often dine alone, so I doubt that I will return here for another try any time soon.

The service is good. The food was ok for Americanized Mexican food. However, it did not taste very authentic to me.

  • Porter F.

Clearly the best and most authentic Mexican food in Sarasota. A few years back, my son was visiting and searched online for top restaurants in town. Surprisingly, El Toro Bravo was #1 on the list out of almost 500 restaurants, so we gave it a try and I've been going back ever since. The restaurant is in a little strip mall where Stickney Point meets Clark Road, and it isn't a large restaurant. Ruben, the chef and owner, is a wonderful guy and a great cook, and his staff provides great service to augment the great food. We generally go for the beef or chicken fajitas or fajita beef burritos, but that's just our choice. Everything is really delicious, and it's definitely not the bland, toned-down-for-Americans food you find elsewhere. During the tourist season over the winter it's best to make a reservation or get there early, otherwise just stop in. We've never waited more than 10 or 15 minutes for a table, and the wait is well worthwhile. Highly recommended.

An excellent Mexican meal. Quality ingredients, Properly prepared and served immediately. More than reasonable prices for such large portions. Place was packed. We were told by the waitress it was the second wave.

My husband and my first time at El Torro, it did not look like much upon our arrival and right away we opened the front door to a packed dining area (the dining area is very small but I never felt jammed in or uncomfortable). Initially I was worried but those fears were soon squashed when a lovely lady met us at the front entrance, informed us of the wait and gave us menus to look over. She came out to check on us often offered drinks and was very attentive even thought the wait wasn't long at all, maybe 5 minutes or so. The interior was tastefully decorated and appeared very clean. Our waiter turned out to be the owner, Ruben, and was a totally charmer. He offered a lot of great input on the menu and was quick to warn about the spice level of the salsa, which was delicious. We had a layered cheese dip app that was very good and interesting. For dinner I had the especial burrito and my husband had the no.5 combo plate and we had absolutely no complaints! Everything was fantastic. I can tell you the portions are large so you can easily split a meal. After our meal we were given a complimentary "welcome" plate that consisted of two small deep fried brownies and holy geez were they good!! I just can't say enough for how great it was to end our vacation with dinner at El Toro!

New Mexican cuisine done spectacularly well. The owner takes personal care of his patrons and the quality of the food shines through! I had the stuffed sopapillas. The soft breaded texture of the sopapilla with the gooey ground beef and bean filling smothered with red sauce made for simply the best meal I've had in Sarasota for under $10.

While visiting Sarasota, we were looking for a good meal and some decent Mexican food. Visiting from Southern California, we had high expectations for our Mexican food. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food, the atmosphere of the restaurant, and the friendliness of the staff. The food was absolutely delicious. It was a little on the spicier side in general, which was exactly how we liked it. Per our waitress' recommendation, we ordered the fajitas and enjoyed chips and salsa while we ate. The restaurant is filled with locals who obviously frequent the place (we considered this a good sign). The owner is very friendly and talkative and generally cares that everyone has a great experience. He checked up on us multiple times during our meal, which was excellent. The guacamole is superb. After we had finished our meal, Ruben (the owner) came up to us and asked us how we liked the food. When we responded positively, he lamented that we had not ordered the Chile Colorado. He then ran to the back and brought us back a sample, which was excellent. He then brought out a free dessert. Small brownies with whipped cream, cinnamon, and chocolate ornately displayed on a white plate with the word "welcome" written in chocolate on the rim. If we visit Sarasota again, we will most definitely be back, and we would highly recommend this place to everyone who wants a great meal and a great experience.

I'd go back because the waitress was lovely and the owners were friendly and hard working. Food was typical Americanized Mexican which I'm personally not into but we needed to please the palates of four 18 year olds...so straight and narrow worked just fine. Didn't care for chip quality. Also no liquor license so don't come jonesing for a rita! Fried chocolate cubes comped for dessert were a nice touch for newbies.

By far the tastiest food ever. Thankfully I listened to the other reviews. This place is incredible. The salsa has a great roasted flavor . My husband & I started with the cinco quesos appetizer - don't miss out on this or you will regret it. My husband tried their margarita which is made from wine but you wouldn't know the difference. Then we moved on to the Tijuana combo plate for him & I had the Chimichanga (non-fried) made with chicken. We couldnt stop commenting on how tasty the food was. Reuben, the owner, stopped by to chat & so did his wife. They are truely interested in their customers. To top off an already incredible meal, we were given a free dessert sample of the Tree of Life. If you like chocolate then you will love this. What a great find on our vacation trip to Siesta Key!

Okay food. Hole-in-the-wall atmosphere. Rice and beans unremarkable. Good salsa with the chips. Took 45 minutes to serve our table of 3. No reason to go out of your way for this one.

more like 3.5. this place was good. the wait staff was good. the food was good. however, nothing really blew me away. food was a little bland and creativity was somewhat lacking, and that is what will take this restaurant from 3 to 4 stars.

Who would have thought that I would find Mexican food love on a dark, stormy night on the west coast of Florida? We had gone out on a fishing charter all day, only to be greeted by a sea-whipper of a storm about five miles out. After a day of 6 to 8 foot swells and horizontal rain, we had only five fish to our credit and a mighty longing to get back to shore to shower off and find some tasty grub. Imagine our surprise at seeing this place's parking lot packed out in the midst of an amazing downpour! Must be good, y'think? Not since two dreary years in Tejas have we eaten tastier Mexican fare. My sombrero is off to these folks!

My wife and I ducked in here late one Saturday night when we were visiting Sarasota & in the mood for Mexican food. The service is really nice, prices are cheap, and the food is great. I had steak fajitas & they were great. The salsa tastes like it's freshly made in the restaurant (don't know if it is or not, but it's goood).

What Mexican restaurant doesn't have white cheese?? The menu is very limited. All meat is shredded meat but the prices do not reflect it. I'm not sure what restaurant the other reviewers went to but the address listed for this place and the restaurant here SUCKED! My advice is to stay far far away!

El Toro Bravo is a cute little Southwest Mexican Cuisine restaurant. Everything that we have tried is excellent! Chef Ruben is always willing to tell you all about his menu and explain the different dishes that he prepares his own way. One of my favorites is the Chama Chicken Quesadilla with pico de gallo, or the Pescado Rico, which is a tilapia with sweet mango chipotle sauce and lime Caribbean rice & beans along with plantains & salad. Yummmmm! It's very difficult to mess up Mexican food, although some places can. The chips and salsa are very good as well, if it is not enough heat for you, Chef will whip up something extra especially HOT!! Also a must try is the deep fried cheese cake and a wine margarita. Always a great time and the service is wonderful!

We are in town vacationing and house hunting. Local friends took us here and we are very impressed. The food is fresh, delicious, and well presented. The service is warm, friendly, and efficient. This is what a family run Southwestern - Tex - Mex place should be. The chef-owner Reuben graciously provided a lovely little dessert plate as our welcome to Sarasota. This is the real deal. Cannot wait to return.

Go for the specialties - enchiladas and fajitas. The Colorado sounded good, but had too much cumin. Lots of food - I had a chicken enchilada with green sauce and a side of guacamole all from the sides menu and it was the right Mount of food. The salsa that comes with the chips is really good. If you live in Sarasota, grab a take out menu.

Just stopped in here for lunch based on the other reviews. It was the first time here and I was with business colleagues. I went ahead and ordered the beef fajitas. Every time you go to a chain restaurant like Chili's or Applebee's and someone orders fajitas, the whole place stinks. I thought it would be a good test. The fajitas were awesome and they did not stink of burnt onions. My colleagues had the chimichangas and they looked suitable for framing. The owner came to greet us and asked if it was our first time here. They brought out a special welcome dessert tray of these little brownies that were to die for. They made me want to order eight of them, get a quart of milk, and go back to my room and pull down the blinds. The Service was great and the prices were very reasonable. I will come back here in a heartbeat next time I am in town. And the salsa was the bomb too!

Dinner for 4 tonight. Special dietary requests handled politely. Food was delicious and everyone was happy. Great service. Owner-manager extremely firendly & very humorous. He takes great pride in his restaurant and obviously loves what he does.

We went here twice and both times the places was full, but the service was fast (and friendly). The food was good. On your first visit they give you a free dessert. In our case, because they were so busy, they forgot on our first time but gave us a voucher for a Tree of Life dessert for a future visit. The Sangria and Mojitos were also very good. The first night 3 of us spent $60 (with tip) and the next time 4 of us spent $81 with tip. There is another Mexican restaurant in this strip mall but it isn't very busy.

Love this place! Authentic. These are my favorite tacos I have EVER had! I know tacos are boring but it's true! Good lunch specials. Great homemade salsa! This is a very busy place at dinner. Better call ahead.

I went with the positive reviews on yelp. The staff was nice but the worst Mexican I ever ate. Maybe Florida is meant for Cuban more than Mexican.

Wow! We love this place!! Great food, great service, fun atmosphere and a personal visit from the owner welcoming us to his restaurant! We really enjoyed our food too! My husband got the Monterrey combo which was a beef enchilada and a beef taco with rice and beans. I got the Nacho Supreme. Except for the Sangria which I really didn't like - everything else was awesome! A must when in Sarasota!

Greeted by Ruben as we walked in ...small place but missed the lunch rush and were seated immediately. Ordered the queso dip and it was really good!! Ordered the steak fajitas for my entrée and they were so yummy!!! Will definitely come back during our next visit to SK.

To remove any doubt, I tried a different item on the menu every visit until I had tried everything (except American dinners and veggie options). All was flavorful and the service was consistently friendly. Will keep coming back for more Tampiqueño Steaks and Chile Colorado. BTW, the cuisine is southwest-Mexican, as in New Mexico.

Excellent, authentic and decently priced Mexican food. The chimichanga I ordered was not fried as they usually are at most restaurants. This made it lighter and thus a good thing. Service was excellent and staff very friendly. Only complaint: there are at least 5 restaurants surrounding this one in a tiny parking lot. Very crammed and difficult to navigate.

This is a great place! Very friendly staff Gabriel son of chef/owner Ruben was my waiter excellente! Knowledgeable and efficient he recommended the chile Rellenos made with Harch peppers from NM not your typical Anaheim chiles.

  • Manda B.

Everything was great! The owner remembered us from two years ago. I had the New Mexico enchiladas "Christmas style" with both sauces. Wonderful! The agave wine margaritas were no bueno. I am a margarita snob though! We will continue to come here and recommend that you do too!

We found this place on Yelp. It's located in a little strip mall not far off Siesta Key. We walked in at lunchtime and the place was packed. Always a good sign. Mostly locals. Another good sign. Service great. Food great. Atmosphere great. Rueben came out to greet us at the end. Great guy. Even gave us a little welcome desert after we were done. I would definitely go here again. This place is a keeper if you're looking for Mexican food close to Siesta Key.

Now this is good!! I'm not sure I'd call this Mexican as much as I find the taste to be closer to Southwestern. We were in a party of four and everyone was extremely pleased with their meals. The burritos, fajitas, queso, and guac were all big hits at our table. We hit the place on a busy Friday night, and service was excellent. The hostess was a bit frazzled, but she managed. The big thing that impressed us, the chef was running food to the tables, checking everything as it came out, and giving tips / interacting. The only thing they need is a new location, because parking is a nightmare...there is none in this strip-mall. I was close to pulling out and going somewhere else had someone not backed out of a spot at the last minute.

After a couple attempts during prime time, my wife & I got here early on a Wed (opens @ 5) and were the first of two couples to be seated. I had seen a review and wanted to try this Mexican food restaurant. We weren't disappointed. Both of us had the combo Acapulco, with different meats (chicken & beef). I'm not usually big on the rice since most times it's had time to sit awhile but having the first serve it was very good. The chili renello was a little different but was very tasty. We were treated to a small desert since it was our first visit. We sat next to some regulars who gave suggestions for next visit but I think we might become regulars and just go through the whole menu.

Oh my. We loved this place. I took my family from Kansas that are not super adventurous eaters and my and husband and I that run n the snotty foodie spectrum, it was perfect. Great service, very delicious we will definitely be going back when we are n Sarasota!

Really goid food, all traditional style. Only thing I would consider to improve is the margarita and sangria. Basically the alcohool part

  • Peter M.

I have been going there for six years, Never had a bad meal, the owner/chef does not cook with lard, which makes his cuisine light and delicious. You walk out satisfied but not overstuffed, even with the copious amount of food he serves. Then there is the service, the same people have worked there for years and treat the customers like family. For what else could we ask? The place gets packed on evenings and weekends. so we make a reservation and all is well. The poor review Dawn M. on 11/5/11 left is either a fake as there is no bar or bartender and the menus have no pictures or she doesn't have a clue she was in the wrong restaurant. OR...She is a plant from the restaurant down the strip...Why would someone not admit she is wrong when she is obviously not accurate in her description.

this is the best Mexican food I have ever tasted, we were in Sarasota for a week and went twice, the food is fresh, the service is friendly can't say enough about this place, casual, clean, big portions, the sangria was even good.. the place is in a strip mall, where oddly there is another Mexican restaurant on the end, which was empty, but El Toro Bravo was packed, on a Tuesday and a Friday night, the owner came to make sure we all had and needed what we wanted, both times, will go back every time we are in Sarasota..

Best Guac I have ever had. Everything is top notch here. Try a combo to start, taco fabulos, shredded chicken tamale, just as good, beef tamale? Yep, just as good. I intend to return again and again until I have worked my way through the entire menu.

Came here on New Years eve. I asked our waitress, ( a young bleached blond) what she recommended. She was not helpful at all, and appeared to be more interested in getting the order over with, rather than helping us. I asked if I could substitute one item for another and was met with an abrupt NO! The food arrived quickly and upon my first bite I knew we were in for a mediocre meal. I had the Veracruz combo plate, my wife had tamales. The tamales appeared to have been microwaved and tasted old and overdone. My meal was better but not by much. When I eat Mexican I usually clean the plate no matter how poor the fare. This is the first time I recall not doing so. Although the chef was busy with another large table, no one bothered to see how our meal was. Upon paying our check the hostess came over and thanked us for our business. Alas my search will continue for some decent Mexican...stay tuned.

I'm not sure why this place gets such rave reviews. I ordered a taco salad and the beef was so chewy that I spit it out and avoided the meat while I ate the rest of the salad.

Really more of a 2.5 stars. I was soooo looking forward to eating here. Alas, for us, reality didn't live up to the yelp-review hype. First, the good. The food is a solid 3.5, possibly 4 stars. They start you off with the usual chips & salsa -- the chips were crunchy & salty, the salsa fresh & with just the right amount of heat. I had the shrimp fajita salad for my entree, and it was great. Lots of fresh, dark-green lettuce, cheese, sour cream & guac atop the fajita shrimp, onions & peppers. My husband had the three-taco plate, which he ate every bite of. Even my picky kid ate almost his entire taco (and at only $2 ala carte, a great value for kids). So, the food was good. Unfortunately, though, not good enough to make up for the other areas where this restaurant is lacking... Like... the service. It was, um, perfunctory at best. There was no greeting, no smile, no feeling of welcome. I originally ordered the pescado rico, but was told it would take 10-13 minutes. When dining with a small child, we try to minimize waiting so I made another selection. Well, our food ended up taking a solid 15 minutes to get to our table anyway. During that time, we polished off all the chips. Would've liked more, but nobody came by our table until our entrees were brought out -- at which point our waitress asked, "Do you want more chips?" Uh, no, you just brought our entrees. Didn't see our waitress again until our plates had been cleared away & she brought the check -- at which point she noticed my empty water glass and asked if I'd like a refill. How about maybe taking the time to check on us once after we receive our food to see how everything is & refill water glasses then? They were busy, yes, but that's no excuse. If your staff can't appropriately tend to the number of tables they have, add more staff... or re-train/replace the ones you have. Now for the really bad part. The place is dirty. I'm not even one who's typically uptight about those things (a little dirt just builds up my immunities), but this place needs a thorough scrubbing. Literally every surface was dirty -- floors, walls, tables, chairs. The splatter on the wall next to us looked like a crime scene. And when I unwrapped my fork, a piece of napkin stuck to it. My husband said, "I'm sure it was just wet," then I turned it around so he could see the hunk of dried food stuck to it. If this is how they keep up their dining room, I don't even want to think about what that kitchen must be like. Overall, a big disappointment. We've been looking for a good Mexican joint since moving from Atlanta a few years ago and had high hopes this would be the one. We'll keep looking.

Went here to try to get a late night take out. I tried to hurry and order something as the bartender said I could order but found the menu confusing as the pictures show burritos but nothing was on the menu. I asked the girl at the bar helping me and she said they don't have any? No burritos.. No enchiladas... No nothing? Really disappointed.... Walked away with no food. Would never go back... Update: per Peter M. I did double check the address and looked for additional photos and confirmed this was the location. 9-2013: after getting stalked by peter m for a bad review which my my true opinion and correct events I am back in siesta and drove past this place today on my way somewhere else and I look over and think isn't this where I went??? What do you know it was! Regardless of what my rating is nobody has the right to blast someone for their opinion. If they don't want bad ratings then they should treat customers better.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
