I have been a loyal fan of Daruma for years, but lately their service has been going downhill. I usually sit at the bar and order nigiri and occasionally order it to go. The last two times I have ordered to go, the hostess has told me the wait will be 20 minutes so I usually wait 25 before I get there just in case- but the last two times I have waited an additional 30 minutes which is completely ridiculous. In addition to my 20 minutes turned hour wait time the hostess ordered the wrong thing for me and this added to my wait time even more! There were no apologies or attempts to correct the situation which was indeed their fault, which is incredibly disappointing. I have loved Daruma for years because the food is excellent quality but if I return again and the service is sub par I will have to say goodbye.

Update from my last visit. The chef was much more personable and so we didn't feel like a burden as he cooked for us. I believe his name was Joe. Large and lively guy. The food was decent as usual. I like that they cook cabbage with their vegetables. The sushi is still standard. I wish they would change their menu to add some more interesting rolls.

One of the best Sushi restaurants in Sarasota! One of my few choices for a birthday dinner. Great food and great atmosphere. I only get sushi and sushi rolls there, so I've only eaten in the dining room next to the piano, but I've been there many times. The service can get slow sometimes... but they have great martinis or plum wine!

We went there on Valentine'd Day and it will be our last visit. First they couldn't find our reservation. They had spelled our last name wrong and found it only because they were able to match it up with the phone number they had for us. Before both my husband and I had 2 sips pf soup they were clearing the bowls. Same thing happened with the salad as well as the rest of the meal. Part of the reason we go is also for the entertainment by the chief. There was NO entertainment from the chief. Barely even a smile. One customer asked for the dessert menu and was told there was no dessert tonight since they had over 500 reservations! The only thing we waited for was the check! We had to wait a good 15 min. for that. There are plenty of good Japanese restaurants in the area and I would highly recommend going to a different one. Also the price was high for the quality of food.

Being married to a man who used to live in Japan, I had high expectations. We like to consider ourselves to be "japanese steak house connoisseurs" and i must say, we have had the luxury of indulging at Japanese steakhouses all over the state, and none have come close to DaRuMa. I always order the scallops and filet, and the scallops are absolutely to-die-for. If you love scallops...oh my god. Order them. The only downside, compared to other Japanese steakhouses, is that you have to pay a couple extra bucks for fried rice. And they don't serve you noodles. However, everything else is amazing. This restaurant will always be a special place for my husband and I!

I used to love coming to Daruma at least once or twice a month because the food was good and the prices reasonable. Well, the food was okay but the prices lately have been exorbitant. To top it off, we went with our kids who OF COURSE, shared plates because they are young, and they charged us a SHARING fee even though none of us ate salad and exorbitant fees for regular non-alcoholic drinks ($3.50 for a glass of club soda, $4.00 for a kid's apple juice) AND even though we were two adults and four young kids, ON TOP OF THE SHARING FEE WE WERE CHARGED AN 18% gratuity for sub-standard service. GIVE ME A BREAK. $176 for two adults and 4 kids and we shared THREE MEALS. OUTRAGEOUS!!! We had been going to Daruma regularly and now we are never going again. The owner of this restaurant must have learned how to operate their business from the airline companies: charge hidden ridiculous fees for nothing. What's next? A fee for bringing my purse? A fee for the disposable wooden chopsticks? A fee for the paper towels in the bathroom? A fee for the live piano music? Or for freezing the ice in your water? Nuh-uh, you don't fool us Daruma. If I'm going to spend THAT much money, I'm going to our favorite 5-star restaurant and eating aged filet mignon with Bearnaise sauce, creme brulee and a 2000 Malbec imported straight from Mendoza.

I have been going to DaRuMa for years on and off since it was at the Quay and the service and management continues to get worse and worse. I went there on Tuesday night for my birthday because I had received an email with a $20.00 off coupon. Well in the past the coupon didn't say that you had to print it out and now IN THE FINE PRINT it does so when I tried to give it to our AWFUL server Chris he blew me off and said we will worry about that later and continued on with our meal, after that our chef came out and he had a horrible pushy personality and then our bill came and of course Chris didn't take the coupon off and when I went to show him the coupon ON my phone where I received the emailed coupon he said we won't accept the coupon because it needs printed out as it says on the email. BTW who reads the fine print especially when you receive an electronic coupon? Anyway Shawn the manager came by and was extremely rude and after arguing with me about it finally found a coupon they had in house and took $10.00 off my meal. I WILL NEVER GO BACK to this rude establishment. They need to cleanhouse on their chefs and their management staff and retrain their servers on what customer service is....

Amazing service last night for my son's birthday! We have 5 severe allergies and the manager did not have an issue and our waiter was awesome!! Our reservation was early so we knew we could avoid some crowds and issues but this guy went above and beyond to enjoy our safety- same with the chef. A million thanks for a great birthday celebration!!

Fresh, flavorful sushi paired with a beautiful atmosphere and attentive servers. What more needs to be said other than this place is a sushi stop must!

We stumbled upon this place while in Sarasota for the weekend. Ill be honest with you, I didn't expect much from a sushi / japanese place in a strip mall but man was I wrong. The menu was a bit off putting at first due to it seeming pretty expensive. I was with 4 others and we couldn't believe the amount of food we got, the quality and the price we paid. This place is great and if you are a local definitely go check it out. I ordered the 3 sushi roll combo that was around 22 bucks and i cant remember the name, but go with that and you will be a happy camper.

Visited on 2/1/13 for the first time. Daruma as far as food quality is decent, small portions and they nickle and dime you ($2.50 extra fee for fried rice). Also, the food didnt have much of a flavor, it was bland. As far as decor, it is newer and looks nice..However, Daruma crams the chairs in at the table to the point where you don't have sufficient space. The staff needed a lesson in customer service. Everyone we spoke with and watched while speaking with other customers were pretty snooty or rude. They were attentive just enough but they all had a crappy attitude. Even the chef didnt get into it like you want him to he was just cooking- boring. I would not suggest this place to a friend because its just decent and I don't think worth the money, you will get decent food but its not as enjoyable as it should be. I will stick with Jotos, it's a little older restaurant but the food and staff are much better!

Oh DaRuMa... The memories I have of you. I originally went to the location in the Quay before they moved it and it blew me away so much I always looked for occasions to come back. The hibachi grill is amazing, the sushi is amazing and all the meats and sides they have are great too. If you're looking for something full of flavor and a lot of variety for a little bit more money... This is definitely the place to go. May not be traditional Japanese all the way but everyone can find something they like on the menu. Also, if you do the hibachi then make sure that you get the fried rice if you're a fan, it's to die for. As well as the tempura ice cream for desert!

This review is not based on the food or the service. This review is based on management. The manager we spoke with, Ronnie, was not very nice to us at all. He was rude and had an attitude with us after we asked a simple question. All that happened was we had signed up for a birthday coupon but had not gotten the email in the 3-5 days like the website said. The fine print on our information said that we could provide ID to verify it was the individual's actual birthday. This would entitle you to $20 off your order of $40 or more. Our entire table (group of 10) had about a $500 check, so $20 off would not have ruined profits. Ronnie told us that anyone can interpret that however they want, but it doesn't mean we get the discount. He bobbled his head like a frustrated effeminate male with an attitude and said he wasn't going to do anything for us and immediately left the table. No sorry. No cordials. Nothing. Very matter of fact. And it's fine that they didn't give us the discount. So what. But we are guests in your restaurant and deserve to be treated with respect as we were not being disrespectful in any way. We deserve a polite hand rather than a backhand. If you can't help us, act like you're sad about it. If it's busy and you need to attend to other things, politely say so and wish us a good evening. Customer service should be one of the very first things on a manager's resume. If you can't deliver it, you shouldn't be a manager, you should be a dishwasher. Although, I am certain even dishwashers know how to be polite.

I love me some Japanese steak house so anytime I have the offer to try out a new restaurant, I am there. I came here with 5 other friends during the middle of the week. It wasn't very busy. Though the location is in a strip mall, they definitely made an effort in the design of the outside and the interior decorating inside. Our table was raised up on a 3 foot platform and we actually had to climb up to get to our seats and with 5 inch heels, this wasn't the easiest task! Kind of odd how they have it arranged. Our service was good and our chef was great. The drinks were OK and the food, as always, was pretty good, too. Though, not amazing. It was a bit over priced but perhaps they had to jack up the prices for all their fancy interior decorating including the koi fish pond in the front!

I thought, " you eat at one Japanese steakhouse, you ate at them all!" Nope, this one is less than average. The soup was less than average. The sauce was less than average. The fried rice was less than average. The place was, well you can guess. I will give a pass to our chef, he seemed new to this with all the fumbles, but hey, gotta start sometime. The place is nice and clean but the food, meh!

I love hibachi style and this is the place I go to get it. That being said I don't go often. The routine is the same everytime no matter who is prepairing your food. The decor is appealing to the eye and it is a nice place for a date (lighting, koi pond waterfall, etc.), if you don't mind sitting with 6-8 strangers. They do have intimate seating but it is not hibachi style obviously and I have never tried it. The only reason I will go back is probably just to try that and the sushi bar. The hibachi menu has range from chicken and seafood to steak and duck, which are all pretty good. The seasonings are simple and you get the typical soup to start, then a typical lettuce, carrot, red cabbage salad with the most delicious ginger dressing (I swear it is freshly made), and shrimp. Then you get your choice of white rice which is included in your meal or you can opt for daruma fried rice for an extra $2.50. It is basically pork fried rice without the pork. My husband loves it, I do not. I have been to this location so many times and the one thing that irks me is consistency. The service is bad. The last I went it was our anniversary about a month ago. We made reservations for 5:00pm and we weren't seated until 5:20pm. We got to watch people who weren't even there for as long as we were be seated. Why did I even make a reservation?! There were about 5 people at the front desk the entire time and every single one of them looked pissed off. No one smiled but everyone used their "business voice" on customers. If there is one thing I hate it is bad service. I have since been a few times and tried their sushi which was pretty good. No complaints as usual on the food.

Nice atmosphere, and like the previous reviewer said, good for a date if you want to leave some sort of impression on your invited company. However, I also agree on the service. Definitely a crapshoot. Last time I was there it wasn't even busy and the server was not attentive. Everyone at my table liked their food, but they definitely need to improve the service here and keep things CONSISTENT. Oh, on a side note, love the bathroom sinks.

My first experience at this style restaurant, seating was odd for our group and server should have cleared plates as we finished each course, it was so crowded we could hardly move our elbows. Food was ok, way overpriced I thought. our chef was pretty boring compared to the guy one table over. Won't be back.

I've had spotty service here, however the food more than makes up for it. The ambiance is so romantic, great place for a date. The food, while pricey, is excellent. I have always sat by the hibachi, never table side, and the chefs are always friendly and entertaining. I look forward to every return visit.

They squeezed us in on New Year's Day for a party of 13 at the hibachi grill. The seating area around the grill is kind of strange, and it was definitely packed with 13 of us. Once the appetizers came I was able to forget about it though because they were quite delicious. We ordered the spicy tuna sushi roll which was really nice - very fresh tuna. We also had the beef negimaki, which is my favorite. I could eat beef + scallions for days. For my entree, I ordered the filet + shrimp hibachi combo meal with fried rice. Holy butter, that's all I have to say. Our chef definitely favored the butter and oil, and my stomach was upset by it later in the evening. But regardless, everything did taste pretty good. My cousin ordered the tuna steak which was so perfectly pink and bright when it came out, you could really tell it was SO fresh. She ordered it as rare as she could get it, so just the edges were cooked and it melted in our mouths. I can't wait to go back and order it. It was so yummy! Nothing beats a good piece of fish like that. It's one of the nicer restaurants in Sarasota. Definitely a surprise, too, since it's tucked away in a strip mall. You walk in and they have a great koi pond in the entrance and a really nice, dark ambiance. Hibachi grills are always such a fun thing to go to and having one here in Sarasota is awesome. I wasn't blown away by much, but it was a overall fine experience. I'll be coming back here and most definitely getting the tuna steak. But, keep in mind that it's pricey. There's a reason people go here on birthdays and such because for just some pieces of chicken and shrimp on a hibachi grill you're shelling out $30.

When I went here I was confronted with a sushi menu almost totally filled with loads of tempura and cream cheese, foods I am allergic to. I can't eat tuna, so I substitute it with salmon. Well, guess what, they couldn't substitute it! The food was quite a bit bland, and they should call their spicy shrimp roll a mild shrimp roll. To make matters worse, they got one of our orders wrong and we had to sit around for another 10 minutes. Oh, one last thing, later on that night I felt extremely nauseous and I almost threw up! I highly recommend that you DON'T go to this restaurant.

I don't generally go here for the sushi although it is good. The highlight is the Hibachi/Teppanyaki tables. Great choice for families and groups. The tables are lively and the chefs always entertaining. In the dozen or so times I have ate here I have never had a bad meal. Meats and seafood are always cooked perfectly!

Have been wanting to try this place for years and finally had dinner there Monday night. The decor is attractive and the service was friendly and attentive, but the food we had was mediocre at best. The sushi, even the items billed as spicy, was bland. The duck was overpowered by the sauce and the sides, including the rice, was unremarkable. The ice cold Japanese beer wasn't enough to save the experience. We will not go back.

A tough place to review. It's a bit of a bi-polar experience. The strip mall location is not sexy, but the restaurant's interior is very well decorated and gives off an upscale feeling. The non-grill seating is a bit tight and the booths may have been designed with help from Delta Airlines. I have to agree with others that the evening can go awry if you get the wrong server. Do I really have to ask for forks for children and elderly and follow-up on food items that didn't make their way to the table? The sushi is good and sometimes very good, but while the menu options seem numerous the core ingredient list is short. I figure the restaurant's nearness to the Gulf of Mexico should inspire some interesting options. Locals and folks who haven't been out of town in a while seem a bit more enthusiastic about DaRuMa then I. In general it's average to above average as an overall experience; it's the inconsistencies that keep me from a higher rating.

DaRuma is a great restaurant to enjoy a classy night out with a group. I went with a group of 10 and we did the Teppanyaki, The chef was entertaining and the portions were generous. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. The only thing holding this restaurant back from getting 5-stars is the price. A bottle of beer cost $6.50. I was alone on my tab, and for dinner & one beer, I spent nearly $50! Now, that wouldn't be so bad if Joto's (a similar restaurant) wasn't right down the street with comparable quality for almost half of the price.

Not living on the coast, It is difficult for me to find good sushi. I'm glad that I visited Daruma while I was visiting Florida. The sushi was extremely exquisite. We also ordered some salmon fried rice which was equally tasty. If you are in the mood for some good sushi this is a good place to go.

I usually like ALL Hibachi, the meat was awesome, but the rice and the yummy sauce was just OK... and since I dip ALL my food into the yummy sauce... Kumo wins this one for me!

Their food is always good! A lot of my friends when they want to go out for a good meal come here :) I love how they cook the food in front of you. :) I have 4stars because I can't eat all of the food they give - I think it's crappy they charge you an extra plate if you want to share your food.

Well I'd like to give a review on the food but I can't. My party has never had such a rude manager in their life. Arrived at 4:50 and waited outside until exactly 5pm where by that time it was a mass run to the door by an accumulation of people and kids. Most did not have a reservation so made us happy to breeze by them. Then we were taken to an hibachi table where we requested a regular table on the phone. The manager said that it will be a half hour to get a regular table because they aren't ready yet. Well that sounds pretty Ridiculous doesn't it, it did to us. So one in our party mentioned it may be our last time there. The Manager immediately popped off rudely saying he doesn't need to be threatened like that. We all asked what threatened. What are you talking about. As he walked away cockily some one said jerk under their breath and he turned around and said what did you say. I immediately told him nothing was said, The manager said that's what I thought you said. Oh that put everyone on uproar and laid into him and walked out. So I will never know if the reviews for this place are good or not. All I can say is that if you are going here to make sure you can eat shit before you eat sushi. That is if the same manager is there.

Daruma is one of the better hibachi joints In the Sarasota area. Their sushi bar is fashioned like a large U bar and many hibachi tables in the area. The food is pretty good and the sushi is respectable too but you can tell that they are not using good quality tuna. The service can be hit or miss as well, but their drinks come through. They have a pretty good saki (hot or cold). Check it out if you have a decently deep pocket.
