We stopped in here after lunch as our friends recommended it. They sell homemade fudge as well. They have a larger variety of homemade flavors- I opted for the toasted coconut and the Kahlua Crunch in a " Big Olaf" waffle cone that was chocolate dipped two scoops (around $7.50), my partner for the Chocolate Deluge in a " Big Olaf" waffle cone that was chocolate dipped one scoop ( around $6.50) My partner with his "one scoop" got almost as much as my two scoops- so I would say the two scoops was not worth it. Waffle cone- great Flavors- great Texture- egh. very icy not as creamy- depends on personal preference. Upside- A/C interior, large variety Downside- hard to look at all flavors due to way the line is shaped without getting in the way of other people, prices a tad steep for my preference. CASH ONLY ( 5/25/14 visit) No parking at actual facility that I saw, typical beach city parking.

Great product, quick and efficient service by staff, and overall good time on our visit tonight. My family and I stopped by here tonight during our Siesta Key vacation, and we are glad that we did. We selected chocolate (super chocolatey; maybe even a little to chocolatey for my tastes), snickers, rum raisin, mint Oreo and blueberry cheesecake. All were fantastic! The line was out the door when we arrived around 8 pm (maybe 8 people out the door), but we had product-in-hand and were enjoying our treat within 5 minutes. Great teamwork mentality by this crew! They make their own ice cream in-house. I asked because I thought it was possibly Ice Cream Club ice cream brand (phenomenal, by the way).

Heard a lot about this place and we weren't originally going to stop, but judging from the long lines it seemed like we should give it a try. As others said, it's cash only so make sure you have some on hand. They had good choices and my kids seemed to like it. I thought it was okay and am more a fan of the Orange Octopus. For the price you pay, you get a big more at the OO. However, still pretty good and they certainly were getting the majority of the traffic over the other shops in the village. It was good, but I've had better. Still it's a nice treat at the end of the day.

Perfect place for ice cream on the key. Bring cash as that is all they take. Great ice cream, grabs some tastes and then load up a waffle cone with a scoop!! This place has been predictably good all 6 years we have walked in...perfect

A cute ice cream shop with an abundance of purple paint everywhere. My daughter tries a new flavor every visit while I stick to the basics. The staff is friendly, the ice cream is delicious. It's a perfect stop on the way to or from the beach.

I am not an icecream or dessert person. I actually hate chocolate and never eat sweets. During my 4 day stay in Siesta Key I ate here every night. That blueberry cheesecake is to die for! My sick hubby made me leave him late night to get the cookies n cream to help cure his "man flu". Cash only. Great service. Phenomenal icecream.

Out of all the times I have been coming to Siesta Key, I have never been to Big Oalf's. It is in the Siesta Key Village which isn't a far drive at all. What scared me was the huge line that was outside of the store. But surprisedly the employees know how to keep the line moving. So whatever their system is, it's great! I had the fudge brownie which of course I loved. Now I know why it's the most popular ice cream place in Siesta Key.

  • Katye M.

Very good! Almost always a long line in the evenings, but well worth the wait. They usually have a number of people working, so the line goes fairly quickly. Definitely a place to stop for dessert after any dinner on Siesta Key.

  • Jamie K.

After my massage, just in time to spoil dinner, the crowds of people outside with huge waffle coned filled ice cream silently convinced me I had to have some. With everything from your standard chocolate and vanilla to unique flavors like trashcan and blueberry cheesecake it was hard to pick just one. I typically would take advantage of the special flavors, but I was craving the classic mint chocolate chip in a waffle cone of course. I ordered one scoop and wow! It was more than I expected, but man was it good. The waffle cone reminded me of the Belgian waffles I had for breakfast. Yummo! In order to both prevent a stomach ache and save room for dinner I left some in the cone, but believe me, I definitely could have finished it. There is just something different about homemade ice cream that makes it that much more delicious.

Very friendly service. Ice cream super yummy. Brownie fudge sundae is GREAT. My husband loved the banana crunch ice cream. Very fresh.

I don't know about you, but when it's hot out, I want ice cream. And I won't stop craving it until I have it. The biggest selling point for this place is it's location. It's right in the heart of Siesta Key Village, and it's super close to the beach. So whether it's a cloudy day and you want to hit the shops, or you're coming off the beach for a bite to eat, this place is conveniently located. When I went, the line was rather short, but I can easily see how it gets packed during peak times. I had the mint chocolate chip ice cream in a sugar cone. Smooth and creamy. $3.85 for one scoop. Definitely enjoyed it, and definitely better than some places I've been, but then again you can put any type of ice cream in front of my face, and I'll eat it (ask my friends). Limited sitting area inside. We chose to walk and eat (you can get a cup with the cone if you're a mess like me and are afraid it will spill all over the place). Cute place. Lots of other touristy shops in the area, as well as restaurants and bars (some with live music). Reputable place that's been in business for years.

  • Jeni R.

Excellent ice cream, service and location!! Toasted coconut ice cream on an olaf cone was so good!! Great dessert after a day at the beach!!

    (5)
  • Ian R.

Don't let the lines out front chase you away. They move very fast. There is a reason this place is packed all day everyday! This is a must try every time you come to siesta key!

    (4)
  • Sarah E.

Delicious! Amazing! The line looks intimidating but the employees know how to keep it moving! Plus, while you wait you can look at all the amazing flavors and just dream of what you'll want to try on your next visit--because there will be a next visit! We went four times when we spent a week in Siesta Key and now we are home and just craving Big Olaf's!

    (5)
  • Diane H.

When my 15 year old cousin visited for a week, we walked here EVERY night after dinner (and sometimes dessert) to indulge in delicious ice cream. It is our go to place for ice cream on the Key - and we have never been dissapointed. The serving sizes are HUGE. I like that I can get a junior serving and be happy with my 2+ scoops of ice cream. Try it - its well worth it.

  • Buda D.

Great place for ice cream after lunch or dinner while your in siesta key business district. Pricey for ice cream but oh well when you're on vacay and in siesta key. It sure does satisfies your cold desert craving on s summer day.

    (4)
  • Ho L.

The ice cream is tasty, and not too expensive. I'm not a huge fan of the physical layout, as it's designed to move customers through efficiently. It's not easy to just hang back and make a decision since space is limited. Overall a decent ice cream shop.

    (3)
  • David S.

The ice cream was ok there is better on the island. The biggest problem here was the staff. They were more interested in planning on getting to a party than listening to what we needed....

  • Matt E.

This is your typical ice cream shop except for two things. It's right down the street from the countries most beautiful beach and they offer a ton of homemade ice cream flavors that are wonderfully unique but not bizarre. Prices are about average ($4-6 mostly). I'm took off a star because I wanted a cup with three flavors and without warning or even seeing it on the menu I got a giant cup with three flavors for over $7. Don't get me wrong I gladly ate the whole thing but I wasn't expecting to eat that much ice cream or shell out that much. I like that they have a bunch of seating inside and a few places to sit outside. I wished they had a parking lot but the one across the street worked in a pinch. I see many people mentioning long lines. I came on a partly cloudy weekday in July and didn't have to wait for anyone. I tried the cinnamon roll, key lime pie, and birthday cake. Each was perfect. Very flavorful, smooth, and with the right consistency. I love that they make their own ice cream and would definitely come back given the chance.

  • M S.

Great homemade ice cream and waffle cones. I had the coconut with the large waffle cone. After the great ice cream, you get to finish off the waffle cone. Now I am going to walk off the 2 scoops I just had.

    (4)
  • Anders G.

Nice place with friendly personnel and well made ice cream. Air conditioning inside was welcome since it was a very warm day. One scoop of ice cream was well enough for me, they come big here.

    (5)
  • M H.

Went there after reading a good review about the toasted coconut ice cream. Amazing - went there two nights in a row! Pistachio fudge was amazing as well. Fast service even though the line was long.

As you will see from my review from 2010, I had to dock this place a star (SADNESS, I know!). I returned to Siesta Key this past weekend with Big Olaf on my mind. I was super excited, until I got in the door and three teenage-ish employees stared blankly at me as I walked in. Hash tag awkward silence. I stared back and asked "Are you open?" Que the apathetic reply: "Yeah." So, I scanned the flavors and decided on the Kahlua Crunch in a waffle cone, which was tasty. Honestly, maybe the sub par service made the flavor less than awesome. The ice cream was still good, but I didn't know that a sour puss scowl was a topping option for ice cream until returning to the Big Olaf. Come on, kids. You work in an ice cream shop. Side note: An ice cream shop was my first job at age 14. Lessons learned from there: if you serve ice cream with a frown, you look pretty ridiculous. Other notes: Not the cheapest place for ice cream you'll ever try. Two waffle cones will set you back $10, but whatever, you're in Siesta Key. Life could be worse. I noticed the tables and benches weren't very clean this time around, which is too bad. If I am going to get sticky, I'd like to be left to my own clumsy nature as I fight with a melting waffle cone.

    (3)
  • J L.

Amazing. There was one girl working, and she was really sweet. Had the Kahlua Krunch in a waffle cone and it was amazing!

    (5)
  • Anum A.

The ice cream is amazing! Not too light, not too heavy, just perfect. They only take cash though so remember to hit up the ATM.

    (5)
  • Merry H.

Did not think it was absolutely amazing, but it was good! Very long lines. Nothing special. Overpriced. For the build up and price I expected a special experience. Mint chocolate chip was okay. I expected the kahuna krunch to be tropical fruit, but it was chocolate!

    (3)
  • James H.

Classic Good Ice Cream On The Key. During the summer the lines are outside the door. We always come when we stay down in siesta key and always friendly service.

    (4)
  • Tim W.

We tried this ice cream joint recently and we can only give it three stars because the cotton candy ice cream did not taste like cotton candy. It tasted like vanilla which was a huge let down to my wife. I had the chocolate swirl cone which was good. We will have to go back and try other flavors but don't get the cotton candy! This seems like a very popular place though....

    (3)
  • Dawn M.

Was looking for a late night treat on a Friday night and noticed this place was open. It did not disappoint. Tried the strawberry and vanilla brownie Carmel ice cream and I liked the brownie one the best. Would go again!

    (4)
  • Mopsie B.

Very delicious. My family has always gone to Big Olaf's in St. Armand's. We didn't know about this location until recently. This is really good stuff. My only concern is possible fake coloring in some of the ice creams. I had the black cherry and it seemed pretty authentic. I hope they will have more fruit flavors again soon.

    (4)
  • Mary C.

Waffle cones-- peppermint and chocolate. Delish!

    (4)
  • Donna L.

If the scent of Big Olaf Creamery came in a candle form, I would be lighting it day and night. I walked in wanting only one scoop of ice cream and walked out with two scoops of butter pecan ice cream. I didn't regret that extra scoop; creamy and not too sweet. There were even big chunks of pecan in my scoops! So, leave room for dessert and go to Big Olaf. It's the best place to end your fun filled day at Siesta Key.

    (4)
  • Michelle A.

Ice cream was delicious! I had the banana with walnuts and chocolate pieces and it was to die for. My husband had vanilla - both were on waffle sugar cones. Yum!!!! Highly recommend!

    (5)
  • Dana S.

Amazingly delicious ice cream!! The birthday cake and raspberry flavors are awesome!

    (5)
  • Tony T.

The best Rocky Road ice cream I've ever had, better than anything you would find at the chain creameries that have popped up back in Miami. The delicious smell of freshly made waffle cones fills the air, truly a delight in the hot summer weather. My wife had the Strawberry ice cream and she also said it was the best. The small porch in front is usually filled with customers enjoying their large variety of goodies. A definite stop when you are in Siesta Key.

    (5)
  • Regina M.

Expensive but totally worth it! Yummy yummy ice cream! Lots of fun. My family loves this place and must go every time we vacation in the area!

"Coolest" place on the strip. Great for after dinner desert. Very fun, family friendly vibe.

  • Hasnat A.

This place was the shit! A gem tucked away in beautiful siesta key flo rida! I had the cookies and cream on a cone and my wife some other flavor that I could care less about because I was too busy putting mine away! Both of us thoroughly enjoyed it especially after a excruciating hot / humid summer's day. I also had a sample of their mango Italian ice and let me tell you... If I'm ever in the area again.. I'd come back and dissolve myself in some of that!

    (5)
  • Tania G.

after having passed this place several times and always seeing a line outside, we knew it was a must try. i can only speak for the cookies and cream and it was delish. if you find yourself in Siesta Key, yes, stop here. this is the kind of joint that comes out on the Food Network.

    (4)
  • Kristen S.

So underwhelmed by the quality of the ice cream. There's nothing special about it. You can get the same quality from the grocery store. It's way over priced for the quality and quantity. Regretfully, it appears to be the only ice cram store on the key!

    (2)
  • Aaron H.

Combine Big Olaf with the Meaney's Mini Donuts across the street, and you have best one-two punch dessert combo around... perfect after a hot summer day at one of my favorite Florida beaches! I would have given Big Olaf 5 stars except for the "cash only" sign on their door (I never carry much cash). It's one of the few creameries where I can get good Pistachio. Mix that with one of those freshly-made hot mini donuts from Meaney's (cinammon sugar or strawberry cheesecake)... oh man... Instant Heaven in your mouth... MmmMM!

    (4)
  • Audrey B.

Overall my husband and I weren't impressed. No other customers were in the store yet we waited before even being acknowledged. The waffle cones are a nice touch but they used little Debbie fudge brownies on the ice cream and put nuts on after we specifically asked for no nuts. We won't be returning

    (2)
  • Jack S.

If the product and service had been as entertaining as the sign outside--then we would have something. The staff was more interested in folks being in the right line etc and the actual business of customer service. Nothing special. But we will go back to see the sign outside!

    (2)
  • Regis E.

Great quality ice cream, the service is very good, my son mentioned that he was allergic to peanuts and right away with out hesitation and being really cool about it, they went to the back and grabbed the ice cream scoop from a fresh un opened batch And told my son not to worry we got your cover buddy.

    (5)
  • Richard M.

Very awesome ice cream. The toasted coconut in a waffle cone bowl with whip cream was really good on a hot day.

    (5)
  • Brendan C.

In terms of real home made slow churned ice cream, this is one of the best creamary places I've ever been to. I adore mom and pop shops, especially places with high quality and great flavors. Big Olaf's Creamery is like a charming, old-fashioned ice cream shop out of the South with a lot of Southern flair. There's dozens of flavors, with lots of other desserts like fudge, candy, etc.. There's usually a long line for this place, but it's a worth the wait and it's not an expensive treat. You have to get a waffle cone and if you liked chocolate dipped or chocolate dipped sprinkled cover cones, you'll love big olaf's. Only thing is that it's cash only. Visit Siesta Key and end it at Big Olaf's, it's really a good experience.

    (5)
  • Mike D.

Really good but not our favorite. Usually very busy, but still a fun stop. Location, location, location.

Worth the wait... I promise. Cash only! Toasted coconut is amazing!

    (5)

Had the pistachio ice cream....excellent! Worth the wait. It's a "cash only" establishment.

Nothing but RIDICULOUS cinnamon bun ice cream going on here. We visited four times and all four times I had the cinn bun ice cream. DEEEEELISH!

  • Chris V.

WHAT A TREAT! We had just left the chilly but absolutely stunning Siesta Key beach and figured, what could be better than a nice ice cream cone? We actually did not read a thing about Big Olaf but we did not need to AT ALL! FANTASTIC ICE CREAM! GREAT SHOP! A real treat, pun intended. She enjoyed her favorite, Pistachio ... which certainly was tops ... I went for the Oreo Ice Cream ... wow ... and a monster cone too, 2 scoops was as big as my head ... I couldn't imagine what 3 looks like ... The little creamery that could out their in Sarasota is doing a brilliant job.

    (5)
  • Adam C.

Place is always packed and for a good reason. The ice cream is good and the fudge is even better. I am not a big fan of fudge, usually pass, but tried a bite and really liked it. Cookies and cream was pretty awesome. The ice cream was good, but nothing special. I think the idea of sitting outside eating ice cream on vacation is the big draw.

    (4)
  • Brad C.

Sooooo good. The ice cream is fresh, flavorful, creamy and yummy. The waffle comes are also homemade, taste fresh and melt in your mouth. The best ice cream in the area, and amongst the best homemade ice cream we ever tasted. Go!

    (5)
  • William B.

Our favorite ice cream spot in Sarasota. The kids always enjoy it and it's so nice to sit outside on the wall and enjoy our choices from a huge selection!

    (5)
  • Maite H.

Love the homemade ice cream and the refreshing feeling that comes with it after spending a day at the beach. The place is small and there's nothing impressive about the looks of it but all of that is insignificant once you taste the creamy goodness.

    (4)
  • Jen H.

Eh, it's okay. Nothing to write home about. Orange Octopus near Stickney Point is MUCH better.

    (2)
  • Hesays Shesays R.

We really enjoyed this place... good selection of icre-creams and soft-served yogurt... and the waffle cone taste very good.... We are only giving it a 3 because the waffle cone was very tasty... but a little hard... too thick... and because we only ate the soft-serbed yogurt... and well... there is nothing special about it... But... they do have some very good flavors of ice cream on the store... and they make shakes and other goodies.... They also have clean restrooms... and inside sitting space.... so you can refresh after a hot day at the beach...

    (3)
  • Bethany M.

Favorite ice cream place. I've been coming here since I was a toddler and have yet to find a flavor that isn't delicious. The dipped cones are yummy, if pricey. There's nothing like sitting out on the porch and enjoying your ice cream in the balmy ocean air.

    (5)
  • Nilda C.

Big Olaf's Creamery is great for ice cream. If you're looking for a sterile, open air ice c ream parlor, this is NOT the place. But, if you're looking for a rich, creamy ice cream, that you practically inhale do not pass up Olaf's. The place is located right outside of the Sarasota City limits in the heart of Amish vacation land. Since most folks drive up to Big Olaf's, it makes it tough to drive away with an ice cream cone in hand so most sit in the messy outdoor space to rock on one of the Appalachian-type seats and chat as they lap their creamy confection. I think the smartest folks just buy a gallon of their favorite flavor and jump back in their car to eat it at home. Whatever you do, if you're an ice cream buff, as I am, go at least once to Big Olaf's. But, cash only is the by word here.

"THE GULF ATE MY HAT!!!" True story. Second day at a very windy Siesta Key beach, the wave knocked me down and stole my most favorite meshy straw fedora, the most perfect beach hat in the world. I was devastated. It was only thanks to that hat that my delicate scalp was saved from the sun's rays. And I felt a little like Justin Timberlake when I wore it. And who doesn't like that. Suffice it to say, that the disappearance of my favorite hat and the wicked sunburn I picked up (despite a diligent effort at reapplying SPF 50) made for one big sad face. Fortunate for me, my friend knew that ice cream just might be able to turn my frown upside down. The truth is, not much is better following two days at the beach than two scoops of mint oreo ice cream in a big waffle cone. Trust me. Pricey, yes. But worth it. Do it up, Big O. Make the pain of my lost favorite hat go away. It worked a little. And the ice cream was deeeeelish.

Confessions of a Siesta Key Addict: 9am-4pm: Lay out on Crescent Beach 4-5pm: Head to condo, get ready for the evening 5-7pm: Early dinner in the village or Sarasote...hmm..Lobster Pot?Marina Jack? etc. 7-9pm: Head back to beach for gorgeous sunset 9-10pm: Siesta Key Village home of BIG OLAF. Big Olaf's: -great wafflcones -can buy by the quart (good for sharing or taking some extra back to the condo) -outdoor porch for eating your ice cream, so you can people watch and see the village life -is the only known location for my favorite flavor: Khalua Krunch...ahhh.

The first night of vacation we ended up at this place. It was a Saturday night and we knew it must be good when we walked into the small quaint space and there were 8 employees eager to serve and make us happy. They were on it! We had four indecisive kiddos with us and they were patient and kind. And the ice cream was fantastic! We have since gone three more times in just a week. Highly recommend!

  • Patrick W.

The ice cream here is really great; there's a decent selection of flavors ranging from the interesting and unique to the old standbys. I had toasted coconut, which was great. The waffle cones were really good. It was close to $8 for two small waffle cones with one (huge, heaping) scoop on each, but the ice cream was really very good. Lots of fun to do some people watching on the front porch while you do your best to keep the ice cream from running down your arm in the Floridian heat.

Finally a rival to Handels...so Hoosiers and Buckeyes will not be disappointed. Don't let peak hour line scare you...scoopers are friendly and efficient so it moves fast. I had three trashcans in same amount of days and samplings of several other flavors. Ice cream, sun, beach...it's all good.

I'm a firm believer that desserts can serve as a full meal - and Big Olaf helped prove my point. After a morning on Siesta Key Beach (and after being rained on while on the beach), my friend and I went to Big Olaf for ice cream. We both got waffle bowls (a little on the tough side) and mint Oreo ice cream. There are a lot of flavors available, but not so much that you're overwhelmed. Great place in a good location for hot and humid days on the beach.

    (4)
  • Ursula A.

So many flavors.....but I'm a chocoholic, so I always get some version of chocolate ice cream. I like their chocolate with brownie & also the peanut butter cup. I always get mine on a sugar cone. It can get pretty crowded in the evening, but the line moves quick & the staff is friendly. We have never sat on the wall out front to eat ours. (It usually looks pretty sticky). We like to walk around & window shop while we enjoy our delicious ice cream.

    (5)
  • Emily G.

Don't go here! Despite being in such a prestigious part of town, this place is nasty because they do not clean the trashcan, floors nor their tables. Service is horrible and they don't keep the ice cream cold enough, so it's basically just like ice cream soup. When I tried to send my order back and get a refund, they refused to refund me despite my complaint.

A good-sized line promised some yummy ice cream, and my Royal Banana Crunch on a very fresh waffle cone didn't disappoint. Neither did the Chocolate Deluge, Chocolate Peanut Butter, and Maple Walnut the rest of the family devoured.

Excellent ice cream, service and location!! Toasted coconut ice cream on an olaf cone was so good!! Great dessert after a day at the beach!!

Great place for ice cream after lunch or dinner while your in siesta key business district. Pricey for ice cream but oh well when you're on vacay and in siesta key. It sure does satisfies your cold desert craving on s summer day.

Great homemade ice cream and waffle cones. I had the coconut with the large waffle cone. After the great ice cream, you get to finish off the waffle cone. Now I am going to walk off the 2 scoops I just had.

Went there after reading a good review about the toasted coconut ice cream. Amazing - went there two nights in a row! Pistachio fudge was amazing as well. Fast service even though the line was long.

Nice place with friendly personnel and well made ice cream. Air conditioning inside was welcome since it was a very warm day. One scoop of ice cream was well enough for me, they come big here.

Waffle cones-- peppermint and chocolate. Delish!

  • J L.

Amazing. There was one girl working, and she was really sweet. Had the Kahlua Krunch in a waffle cone and it was amazing!

Very awesome ice cream. The toasted coconut in a waffle cone bowl with whip cream was really good on a hot day.

Go!

    (4)

Was looking for a late night treat on a Friday night and noticed this place was open. It did not disappoint. Tried the strawberry and vanilla brownie Carmel ice cream and I liked the brownie one the best. Would go again!

Ice cream was delicious! I had the banana with walnuts and chocolate pieces and it was to die for. My husband had vanilla - both were on waffle sugar cones. Yum!!!! Highly recommend!

Amazingly delicious ice cream!! The birthday cake and raspberry flavors are awesome!

  • M I.

  • Douglas A.

A good-sized line promised some yummy ice cream, and my Royal Banana Crunch on a very fresh waffle cone didn't disappoint. Neither did the Chocolate Deluge, Chocolate Peanut Butter, and Maple Walnut the rest of the family devoured.

Always seems to be a line at this place. They sure do have a great selection of some yummy treats. Worth the wait. Be sure to have cash. Great customer service with many willing helpers to keep the line moving.

  • Dave C.

  • Erik R.
