Believe all of the other reviews! Yum. My sentiments are based on hitting this place up two nights in a row. We ordered the fried shrimp, fried oysters, fried lump crab bites, hushpuppies, side salad, cheesy grits, coleslaw and corn on the cob. The coleslaw and corn on the cob left something to be desired but the rest of our food was awesome! So bummed they had run out of t-shirts for sale when we got there. Excellent, friendly service.

The only place to get great seafood. We always make a point of stopping here whenever we make an east coast trip from California. They also have the BEST fried chicken we have ever had.

Doesn't look like much from the road, if it hadn't been for Yelp. Family owned, proud to employ local kids and are proud to be helping them achieve goals. The good was devious, I had grilled oysters and shrimp, crab cake, with corn on the cob and cheese grits, as well as a couple of delicious hush puppies Topped off with key lime pie. Inexpensive and delicious!

Love this place. You get what you expect, good seafood, friendly service. Obviously not high dining but simply good food.

Visited this week 3rd year running. Had a great meal (twice). Amazing oysters and best fried chicken we've had in ages. Make no mistake - there's nothing fancy about this place but the food and staff is outstanding. The shrimp is also great - both fried and peel-and-eat. Cheese grits are delish.

Excellent seafood. Fried right, seasoned right and the cole slaw and cheese grits were right on. Definitely going back before we leave the area. Nothing fancy here...just good eating.

I really hate it when things change for the worse. We've been visiting Posey's for more than two decades, and we remember it at its prime, when Mr. Posey (we assume that's who it is) was there all the time, the wait staff were competent and friendly, the food was all great, and they had the best fried shrimp in the world. We noticed a marked change beginning about three years ago, as Mr. Posey was there less, and the waitresses got a lot younger. We assumed they were the third generation, and hoped they'd grow into it. After all, walking into a pre-made job is no small thing! Unfortunately, what seems to be happening is that when Mr. Posey or the older woman we assume is his wife are there, the staff are friendly and hard-working. Otherwise, disaster. Since Posey's Dockside closed, they seem to have brought all the plastic dishes here - fine, but different. The portions, also, are smaller now. The shrimp themselves not as fresh - don't get the grilled, you will be disappointed. I can live with that, but the fried shrimp were not good. We tried four times, and the only time they were fine was when Mr. Posey was there. On our last - and final - experience dining there, our waitress was young - a teenager, really - and it was all she could do to serve our table. She literally trudged across the floor to us, gave us a bright fake smile that lasted about two seconds, took the order, then glared at another waitress and stomped back to the kitchen! I am not joking, she stomped. Our entire meal was like that. She couldn't be bothered bringing dishes for the horseradish or cocktail sauce. (They're small and plastic, and they used to just be out on the table. I guess since they went to plastic plates instead of disposable wax paper in shrimp baskets, the costs have gone up, hence saving on the ramekins.) When we asked the second time, she stomped off, then brought two for our party of six. She forgot the silverware. She dropped the plates of food on the table, rather than placing them. And on and on. Mind you, this was just one waitress, but the food on three of our four visits was nowhere up to the old standard - not just my opinion, but that of the seven different people we brought with us. Grease needs to be changed regularly; this was not. The shrimp and grouper were over-cooked. And I'm sorry to say, the men's and women's bathrooms both smelled like something was wrong with the sewer. Oh. The cheese grits were awful, a new low. Also, a pet peeve of mine - no hot water in the bathrooms. How are you supposed to maintain hygiene that way. The tartar sauce is still very good.... All in all, three years of disappointments means we will take our business elsewhere. Sad, because it's gone from a caring staff to an "entitled" one, and that's unfair to the remaining older waitresses. Sad, because they used to be great. Just sad.

Excellent local dive seafood joint. It was full of locals and lots of law enforcement folks. The seafood dishes were well prepared and very tasty. We had shrimp and grouper and all the sides. Service was good and the owner lady sat at the counter and directed traffic. A good stop!

Good seafood! Hole in the wall, but worth the stop. Bacon & cheese and garlic parmesan oysters were great! Enjoyed the gumbo & grilled scallops. Several locals dining plus a Christmas Party in back room, so that tells you something. Would come back!

Thanks to same day Yelper Ryan T, I took a chance and had a delicious dinner and wonderful experience here. It's not fancy, but it sure is friendly. Good salad, fresh shrimp, yummy cheese grits and a whole ear of corn that was HOT and buttery and not soggy at all. I sat at the bar because I was a party of one, although the staff said I was more than welcome to take a table. My drink was filled up right away throughout my stay. I sat next to a regular who was being treated like family, and when the owner/ cook came out of the kitchen, I got treated like family too. I bought a shirt to take with me as well.

Oh, this has to be my favorite place for fried seafood around Tally. Yes, its divey, and yes, they serve on styrofoam, but no can fry an oyster just right like Posey's. And I'll admit that the cheese grits are not the best around and the key lime is far from authentic, but the fried mullet is so good you hardly notice or care. I recently took my boys here -- my Vermont husband and my adult-aged step sons -- as we drove down to St. George. Not only did I want them to taste the great food, but I also wanted them to see what the real Panhandle is like! We started with the gator bites, and no, they do not taste just like chicken. Here, the gator bites are the real thing--chewier and sometimes stringy, slightly like a meaty fish. The flavor, come to think of it, is not unlike mullet, but not quite as strong as mackeral or anything. Our youngest son had the fried chicken, which he said was okay, but that it was better at the Lodge in Wakulla Park. I was not impressd with the biscuit, I'll admit. But it's really about the seafood here. My older son's oysters ($8/dozen in Jan 2013) were very fresh and nicely sized. My husband was good enough to order the oysters for me, which were perfect -- cooked just enough to give them the right texture, still soft and milky, so the briney goodness spills gently on to your tongue, providing a nice crunchy contrast to the not-overwhelming batter. And the mullet! Oh, how I love fried mullet! And I love that they do not use the same batter for all their stuff. Unlike the oysters, my mullet had more cornmeal, which added a hearty crunch to the flavorful, meaty fish...but that same nutty crunch cornmeal would have overwhelmed the delicate texture of the oyster. The grits were a little to muchy to me, and could have been cheesier, but I do love the hush puppies here. Some of the best I've had, and just the way I like them: savory with onions, not too sweet (as many place make them), and never overcooked. The Key lime pie is no where near authentic, but quite good in its own Panhandle way. It tastes and feels something like jello-lime-flavored Cool Whip mixed with a little cream cheese topped with a slightly scary day-glo lime liquid candy. So while the KLP may not be authentic, Posey's itself is. This is a Real Florida as you can get.

Add this restaurant to your list! The place is family owned and the food is delicious. Our server, Georgia, was helpful and very nice. We split a seafood platter. Lightly blackened oysters, scallops, grouper, crab and shrimp. Perfectly cooked and seasoned. Our 13 year old daughter had the steamed shrimp which she loved. The hush puppies were the best we have EVER tried. The atmosphere is casual and is a great place to go with family and friends. We will be back before we head home.

Fresh, light seafood perfectly fried. Not a hint of grease! Shrimp and catfish were both top notch. The coleslaw and cheese grits were also great. Even the hush puppies were amazing with green onions inside the batter. This place doesn't look like much but the food is GREAT!

This is what you call fresh home cooked seafood. Don't be fooled by the appearance. The stack of coolers out back mean they probably caught what your eating. That's the kind of seafood I was looking for. My son had the fried chicken and it tasted like my Grandma's home fried chicken. Kids meals had just as much shrimp as my adult meal.

We had spent the day on a fishing charter and had about 40 lbs of filleted mackerel as a result. We brought about 10 lbs into Posey's and got the you-catch-we-cook. If memory serves it was 8.95 and got us a couple of sides each. We asked the cook to prepare the mackerel in whatever manner struck him, as many ways as he liked, and to bring it all out family style. First, the sides. I've read the reviews about the the cheese grits and I'm just gonna say it must be a southern thing and leave it at that. Good, but plain as white bread. The other sides were very good. The chef prepared the mackerel four ways: deep fried, blackened, lemon & pepper, and something I'll just call cajun. Each was prepared well. As a matter of fact, I don't know that I had a favorite. They were all just outstanding. Our waitress was friendly and efficient - kept the drinks full, checked on us often enough and did everything with a smile.

I have been coming to Posey's Steam Room for years - it is the best place to get a meal in Wakulla County, period. The Posey family serves great food at a fair price. When friends and family visit near-by places like Destin, Apalachicola, or Tallahassee - I always recommend they make the drive down to Panacea to visit the Steam Room. Personal favorites are the stuffed flounder or grouper. And, if you have fresh caught fish, they'll cook it for you. All around 100% recommendation.

I am so gratified to have stumbled upon this place. $10 for a dozen raw oysters on the half-shell. I normally prefer West Coast oysters to East Coast oysters, but these were so mild and delicious. I also recommend the seafood gumbo and gator bites.

You would typically drive past this old hole in the wall. But it is way worth the stop. The shrimp and scallops were great. I am not an oyster person, but if you are they have then $4 for a dozen raw, and $5 a dozen steamed.

Great stop for lunch - would NEVER have known to stop here if not for Yelpers. Excellent seafood - fried or steamed or however you like it, daily specials, excellent hushpuppies. If you're passing through this area this really is a must stop, even if just for a snack. Good prices.

So good! So fresh! Loved everything on my plate (and my husbands.) Went to Angelo's the night before and food was bland and slimy. Posey is where the local are. I look forward to going back!

We visited Posey's this past Friday night and weren't too impressed . We arrived around 6:15 and ordered the special which was prime rib; being a "special" we assumed service would be fairly quick; however, although we ordered within minutes of being seated, it took between 45 and 50 minutes to get it. No idea if the problem was with the kitchen or our servers but we noticed that several groups who came in after us were served before us. We both started out with draft beer which was served in room-temperature mugs and only cool, not cold; we each ordered a second beer and when we asked for a "cold" one, were told that we'd have to order a bottled beer, which we did, and yes it was cold but the first one should have been too. The prime rib was really good as was the twice baked potatoes; there was no salad or bread offered. A previous restaurant also owned by the Poseys (in south Panacea, called "Posey's") was a more upscale operation with attention to detail and service. We miss it.

The North Florida seafood shack is famous-enough and unique-enough to earn a rightful place in any culinary museum. Think about how wonderful it is - an ultra-casual place, unimproved atmosphere, neon sign or blinking arrow guiding you off the roadside, sourcing their seafood from a guy they know just down the street that has a fleet of boats and the product was swimming just a few miles away just yesterday. There used to be many dozens of such places here in North Florida, where simple fried seafood was born. Six or so in Eastpoint. Another half dozen in Panacea. Around every bend. Randomly. And oh-so-good. There ain't that many anymore. Fishing industry has taken a big hit from various net regulations and more macro-based economic shifts. More and more heretics enter the seafood game and source from Sysco, which in turn will be serving you shirmp that's been trucked across the U.S. and comes from Mexico or Asia or something. Nothing, I mean NOTHING, can replicate the flavor of a local product. If I call a place up in they're not serving local, they're not getting my business. Posey Up the Creek is the epitome of a local product. It's locally-owned, locally-sourced, and supported by locals. The waitresses know a lot of folks by name. "See you next week" is an oft-heard pleasantry here. And the seafood is downright fresh, and downright incredible, and a steal. Who needs a Sysco truck when you can get a large tray of a dozen or so large shrimp, 15 oysters, a generous portion of deviled crab, hushpuppies, and two sides (I like the cheese grits and new potatoes) for $14? Who needs farm-raised tilapia when you can get fried mullet, a local delicacy, three huge filets of it, with two sides, for $10? What else is local? Everything they can get their hands on! Oysters, snapper, blue crab. If there's a local option, they're buying in. You should buy in too. Every seafood meal you're eating pretty much anywhere in NC, where I come from, is a wasted meal when you can eat here instead.

This place was great!! The waitress was superb. The blue crab cakes were delicious. Try the gator bites - they are real gator tail. Lots of beer variety. Really cheap!! $4.00 for a dozen oysters !! Try it - you won't be disappointed.

Seafood. Seafood. Seafood. I live in the DC area. Getting good seafood is @()*$*& expensive and I am not rich and nor do I hang with a ritzy crowd that knows somebody who knows somebody that could possibly get me free meals at fancy DC seafood restaurants. So what do I do? I eat sandwiches, gorge on cheap hamburgers and wonder what makes a thin slab of flounder so expensive that I need to dress up to eat it. I was down in Florida near Tallahassee on business and decided to follow some college archeologists out to dinner in a nearby town called Panacea. They took my colleagues and I to this 50's looking place right across from the water where we were greeted by a giant neon sign that called the place Posey's. Its an oyster bar and really if oysters are your thing you may wanna consider living next to this place. You can get a dozen oysters for $6. Our table had more than a few plates. I'm used to getting three oysters and spending 20 dollars for them. Here seafood was fresh and plentiful. Oysters were just the appetizers. We also dug into sweet Hush Puppies and tasty little nuggets called Gator Bites. To my knowledge they are actually made out of gator tail. They were deep fried (as many things are in the south) and fantastic. To finish off the meal and pretty much any space I had left in my stomach was Salmon Stuffed Grouper which was huge and will stand out in my memory as one of the best fish dishes I have ever eaten. The best part of the evening... my bill was around 25 dollars and that included beer. Its off the beaten path but worth it if you need a food adventure.

The men of my family have been fishing in the Panacea area for 7 years and we've tried all of the seafood joints around the area (Angelo's, Hook Wreck, Landing, etc). Posey's is head and shoulders above the others in the area. The seafood is always fresh and well prepared; the prices are excellent; and the waitresses are always friendly. In 15+ visits over 7 years, I've never had a bad meal. The ambiance is unique, with food served in baskets or on plastic, a great vibe. I've always heard the best food is served on styraphome, and Posey's is no exception. This is the place to go if you love good seafood.
