Don't let the miniscule menu affect your judgement. The platters are pretty big! The coffee isn't so great. However, my breakfast sandwich and homefries were absolutely delicious. Four stars, only because the lone waitress was a quite "sour" towards my compliment, and didn't seem to know how to accept it.

This place has totally changed since the new owners bought it. The old owner was NOT a people person. The staff is happier now because of that. In reality, this place is a solid four star diner. I am giving them five because they deserve to be raised up with their improvements. Most of their food is very good and comes out pretty quick. Sometimes one of the waitresses makes tasty homemade desserts to sell as well.

This is a traditional, no-frills diner. Our server was friendly and the food was good. I would rate it higher, but nothing in particular stood out. If you're downtown and looking for a diner, this is your place. However, I wouldn't go out of your way to eat here.

Hello new local diner that I love! I ordered some breakfast to go one morning for my boyfriend and I and we both were really excited to find a new place to get our bacon and eggs fix that is so close to us. We both got scrambled eggs, hashbrowns, bacon, toast and a coffee and the total was around $15. Now, I rate all breakfast places based on their potatoes... total make it or break it for me... these hash browns were so good. They were a style I've never seen before... a little thicker than normal hash browns and we both just loved them. The ladies working behind the counter were SO sweet and the inside was extremely clean and well kept. City Diner is the perfect example of why you shouldn't just pick a restaurant based on the number of stars... you really need to dig into the reviews and check the most recent ones.

IGNORE ALL pre-2013 REVIEWS!!! City Diner has been overhauled with top-notch decor and the food is consistently great. My wife and I have been eating here almost every weekend since September 2013 and we have yet to have a bad experience. (When we bring our friends, they're totally sold on the quality and value, also.) It becomes very obvious after visiting this diner that it's not the same place it was with the previous management (pre-2013). The low cumulative Yelp stars really isn't a fair rating scale, trust me!!!

Stopped by here while I was in downtown, and it was pretty good. I wanted to try something different while I was down here, even though the previous day I had something good. Reading through several reviews, good and bad, I found that they are under new management. So far, I don't see anything wrong with the place. Food was good. Service was good. Atmosphere was good. I ordered the Reuben, and it came with French Fries. It wasn't the best I've ever had, wasn't the worst I've ever had. I must have gotten there at the right time, the place wasn't too crowded and I was able to get my food within 10-15 minutes of sitting down. Some of the other patrons on the other hand, had to wait quite a bit longer. I sat right at the counter area, and the patron right next to me was told he may need to wait 30 minutes to get his meal. Would I come back here again? Yes I would. I wanted to try their home fries since a previous Yelper commented on them. Maybe another time when I'm in the area!

Ordered a burger that was not cooked at all in the middle and all they could offer me was 10% off my meal. That is not acceptable. I guess they don't care if any of their patrons get sick.

Serving Jury Duty can be a chore but I decide to turn it into a stay cation, an opportunity to eat downtown because I barely ever take a trip down here... I researched places to eat in the area and was excited to see there was a diner 2 blocks away. I'm a New York transplant and love me some diner food. I read all the reviews and liked the updated reviews of previous visitors to the City Diner. Let me start with the sevice....I was greeted as soon as I walked in and told to sit anywhere that I liked. He llace has about 2 booths and maybe 7 tables. Hostess was vey friendly. Since I am always on the lookout for a good burger, I ordered the City Burger. The burger had grilled onions, mushrooms, bacon & cheddar cheese....YUM. it camw served with lettuce, pickles & tomatoes on the side and a delish side of fries. The food came out very quickly, nice and hot. Overall a really good experience, i would've given them 5 stars other than the fact that I waa asked how I wanted my burger, I said medium and it was a little farther than that. Oh and you pick up wi-fi from the court house right across the street.

This diner is pretty decent, breakfast items certainly are yummy. Eggs cooked exactly how I like them, hash browns about as close to perfect as you can get, sausage gravy thick and tasty, and surprisingly good coffee, though it could be a little stronger. The veggie omelette had broccoli in it which is kind of gross for breakfast, but over all good besides that. Donna was nice and on the ball. We would go back again if we were downtown. :)

This is a very cute and clean place. Enjoyed watching the three cooks communicate well with each other and seeing them prepare the dishes.

New to Orlando. I decided to try City Diner. Sunday early morning's eggs Benedict was just perfect. The hollandaise sauce was like a lobster bisque with the perfect amount of lemon, and the hash browns were amazing. This is my third meal here and all have been filled with great American eats and a wonderfully classic staff like Rita and Braylynn. SP? On names. Great place for a great price. Free wifi works awesome and the patio is western facing with lots of shade in the morning. I like it here. Its just a classic good diner with classic diner charm.

Perfect diner food. But not a greasy mess. Clean and good vibes. Rita is the throwback waitress. Good prices. I'm usually stuck on egg sandwiches or the chicken salad on rye. Stop by. New owners so never mind those old lame reviews.

We ate at this place all three mornings we were in Orlando this past weekend. The food was awesome and the servings were large! The first and third day we had breakfast there the service was so amazing! The two different ladies were very attentive and super friendly. The second day (different lady) was not as great but she was busy and alone so I will give her that. The place was very clean and a great atmosphere. Definitely recommended!

After reading another review that mentioned how the diner had changed ownership, I decided to give it another chance. I'm not usually in the area during the week, but as luck would have it I got another jury summons (the same reason for my last visit to the diner in 2011), so I stopped in for lunch. I'm really glad I did. It's unfortunate that the reviews from the previous owner's era are affecting the rating of the current City Diner, and so I really wanted to update my review to help fix that. So. Right off the bat, no disgusting, dingy, post-apocalyptic wasteland diner as I had previously described. The turnaround is incredible. It's bright, inviting, classic-if-a-bit-plain-looking (not in a bad way), and best of all CLEAN. The menu is basic, stereotypical diner food - the lunch menu consists of things like a cheeseburger, reuben, BLT, etc. I didn't really look at the breakfast menu, but on quick glance it looked like a good sized menu with plenty of options. Both menus are served all day. The staff is very friendly, and you can tell that they get a lot of regulars because the majority of the people that walked in after me were called by name. I ordered the reuben with fries for lunch. It didn't change my life, but it was good. It showed up quickly, and I was in and out in about 30 minutes. Total bill after tax was still under $7. City Diner isn't big on flash or style, but it does exactly what it's supposed to do, and it does it very well. Good, cheap meals served quickly for the breakfast/lunch crowd in a clean, friendly environment. I really hope the current ownership hold on to this place for a long time, it's finally a place to enjoy, rather than be afraid of.

I typically try very hard not to have to give a (1) one star review but sometimes there is no way I can consciously give anything higher considering the overall experience....I really don't want to be harsh but for what should have been a 20-30 minute sit down quick breakfast...it turned into us not getting service for at least 20 minutes and then it just went downhill from there....The hole breakfast experience or lack there of lasted for 2 hours....We simply ordered breakfast items but because of the lack of table service, lack of promptness by the kitchen to cook our orders and get them delivered it took forever....The most horrible part of this is that there were only 2 other tables in the whole diner seated.....I definitely would not waste my time to return here in the future and would highly recommend you not either unless you have a few needless hours to spare....

I truly cherish this gem. Had the brisket sandwich. Nice layers of beef and onions on a sweet roll. Super friendly staff and so clean.

I like this place. It is small and casual, but the food has been consistently good. They have free WIFI. The service is usually very good. Their fruit bowl is the best I've ever seen at a restaurant, full of good stuff like kiwi and blackberries. It is not in the most romantic location but it's a great spot for a quiet cup of coffee or lunch.

This place doesn't look like much on the outside. Stepping inside changes everything. It's obviously been renovated recently and has nice decor. The staff is old school diner straight out of a tv diner. I went for breakfast with the family. Everything came out fast, hot and with generous portions. It's not frilly, showy or artistic. It's excellent quality food at a decent price. I loved it.

I wanted to try this little place out. Went inside, food looked good the tables. Waitress came up and dropped the "F" bomb immediately. Ok... ordered our food. Brought out my burger wrong. Asked for just a new top bun, that's all... Waitress never came back after 20 minutes. I walked in and she still wanted me to pay for my uneaten burger. The burger looked delicious. But I don't so mayo and it was caked on- all I asked for was another top bun!

What era are the staff from? I got yelled at by some crotchety elderly man that wandered too far from his nursing home for texting in his presence. I hope this place has acquired new owners since then.

Finally a place to start going to that serves good food at a reasonable price. The new owner of this place (he has been in this location for nearly a year) is no stranger to the diner industry and when he owned a diner closer to our home, we went there every week end, along with a couple hundred other people. We will drive the 3 miles to frequent this place. Breakfast was outstanding. I don't even have to eat there for lunch to know that Carlos' lunch sandwiches (try the burger) is great. Ignore all reviews prior to the takeover in 2013. Totally remodeled, upbeat decor, and best of all, I didn't smell like greasy diner food when I left. Parking is not an issue. You can park at the Travelodge next door without worry of being towed. The meters are free on the week-ends only and there is parking behind the building to the left of the diner. There will soon be outdoor seating. Definitely worth the trip here.

After a few days at Universal it was time to return home. We wanted to see what was available around Lake Eola for breakfast and after reading the reviews here we decided on City Diner. It's a small place in an odd location for those of us who are not all that familiar with Orlando. The menu is very straight-forward diner fare, which is exactly what we were looking for. Our waitress, Rita, was very friendly and attentive and the food was very good. I had the Create Your Own Skillet with spinach, mushrooms, hash browns and cheddar, with a couple eggs over easy on top. Everything was perfectly cooked and I enjoyed it very much. My buddy had the Sunrise Combo with eggs over easy, bacon and French Toast. He couldn't stop talking about how good the French Toast was. Service was fast and friendly and the prices were surprisingly low for the quality of the food. We'll be coming back to Universal this fall and are looking forward to having breakfast here again.

Saturday morning and the place wasn't that busy. We sat down and it took a good 10 minutes before we were even acknowledged. Once we ordered, it took 40 minutes to get our food. My wife had ordered a country fried steak and hash browns and I had eggs and ham. My ham was cooked to the texture of shoe leather and it was so salty that I could barely choke down a few bites. My wife's food was so overcooked that it was completely inedible. We ended up leaving there and going somewhere else so my wife could get something to eat. The ONLY thing that was prepared the way it should be was my wheat toast. Overall, this was one of the worst dining experiences that we have ever had.

Great breakfast sandwiches. Steak and eggs really good. Very friendly. Chef was talking to guests. Very homey and simple menu.

I couldn't tell if the waitress lady was old, not smart, depressed or just plain unfriendly. Ruined an otherwise enjoyable lunch. Ordered off the breakfast menu during lunch time. Steak was good, eggs cooked well, hash browns good. Would I come here again? Maybe if someone else was waiting on me. Not as crowded for lunch as I suspected so if you're downtown at the court house it's a decent option.

The only good thing about the Travel lodge downtown Orlando is that this place is next door. I had breakfast, bacon and cheese omellet with hash browns and toast. Everything was cooked perfect including the toast, which I rarely receive actually toasted. The plate came with everything hot. Very basic breakfast, but done very well. The other customers were also pleased. I overheard an older couple complimenting the pancakes. The waitress is a bit eccentric, but friendly and the service was excellent. If I were staying I would try lunch.

Went there for breakfast this morning and on the board the special was "Eggs Benedict" The place looked dirty inside and out but decided to stay, sat outside and give it a try as a lot of small diners have good tasty food. Not this one! When the special came the hollandaise sauce was curdled and on the English muffin was melted american cheese. GROSS and I wouldn't eat it. If you are on jury duty and want to get out of it, eat here and for sure you will be excused to go home for an illness.

Starved of culinary variety, downtown Orlando is dominated by sports bars, pizza joints and a small handful of posh eateries (the latter, perhaps a feeble attempt to attract members of the "creative class"). Few ethnic establishments seem to exist--you'll find those as you exit the downtown, toward the airport--and breakfast options are scarcer still. This can surprise no one, given that the metro area is largely devoted to business and cheap entertainment--"Downtown Disney" and the surrounding fantasy world is but a few miles away--rather than to innovative, non-commercial culture. Fortunately for the famished out-of-towner, there is the City Diner, which is (evidently) the only breakfast refuge open in the downtown on a weekend morning. The City Diner is housed, perhaps appropriately, next to a budget Travel Lodge motel. The juxtaposition produces an aesthetic that evokes images of a road-side stop--the kind that we serendipitously stumble upon after driving miles of barren, open roads. If there was a gas station strategically placed next door, the effect would be complete. The interior is a confusing hodgepodge of a '50s era diner (there is a row of swivel seats, and a countertop with pies and pastries), Italian mom-and-pop restaurant (complete with plastic covered tables) and '80s business office kitsch (the inevitable faded window blinds). But one comes to breakfast joints like these not for atmosphere or decor. Like most grease spoon establishments, the City Diner is designed for the oily eggs-bacon-and-toast combinations that are a mainstay of the American diet. As such, they have the standard breakfast menu items, with a few Southern curiosities--at least "curious" to the non-Southerner--such as hash (straight from the can) and grits. In terms of delivery, the food is cheap but not memorable. Then again, this kind of cuisine rarely is.

I had lunch there the day I had jury duty recently. I did my civic duty and was not chosen to try a serial rapist. Whew... Anyway, during my lunch break I walked across the street expecting a greasy spoon. It has a very limited menu, a small staff, but a vintage dining room and stool setup. The focus is breakfast. Since it was past 11:00, I had to choose lunch. I had a club with fries special. It was OK, nothing special. My water had floaties, and since the server (the only one) never came back to check on us, I went without. Anyway, the place seemed like a regulars hangout for coffee and eggs for breakfast type place. It wasn't overly clean, and was slightly outdated, but that's what makes it what it is. I wasn't impressed enough to give it 3 stars. It was just your average hole in the wall diner.

This place was horrible. The lady looked like Edward scissor hands wife, oh and a weird wig. The water in Florida sucks in general. Oh and bugs are crawling everywhere. They should have shirts that you can buy that say I survived this place. Do not go.

A passable little diner located right downtown. Parking is around back, adjacent to the TravelLodge. It was pretty quiet when I stopped in at 9am on a Tuesday, but there seemed to be a few regulars from the courthouse across the street. Atmosphere was a solid "meh." It wasn't any greasier or cleaner than most other diners, but the closed vertical blinds and general lack of decoration made it feel pretty utilitarian. The waitress was nice, but did not call me "hon." Subtract one star. The food was decent. Scrambled eggs came out scrambly, corned beef hash was sufficiently hashy. The grits were watery, which was a disappointment. Coffee: weak. The prices were pretty average; $6-7 for most breakfast combinations. Their hours are pretty minimal; 8-2:30, if I remember correctly. Oh, and free wi-fi. Go figure. I'm in no rush to go back, but it's an OK place to fuel up for your big day in court.
