I have to give it a 4 just because I live to far to make a drive just for food. (thats greedy so its been a while. Anyway, the food is just like home cooked food. I f you dont feel like cooking and you dont feel like being jerked around with nasty restaurant food this is the business. What I dont like and always had to push myself past was the location, but when that craving hit for some fried chicken grits eggs and biscuits, I didn't care at all. Lets not forget their sausage egg n cheese breakfast sandwiches, salmon croquets. etc. I wish their hours were longer, but hey... love the place. Oh yes, I never had a problem with service because I get my food and go.

What's all the hype about? I ordered the hamburger steak, sounds yummy right? Well the hamburger Steak looked and smelled like cheap canned dog food. It didn't taste any better. This entree cost $7 bucks. Sounds great right? However, as fellow Yelper Andreea O. mentioned we are charged extra for things that you assume already came with the entree .For instance your charged extra if you choose biscuit or toast, and your charged extra for eggs and grits. I ended up paying about $16.00 after all the extra fees. After reading some of these reviews it seems like possibly they are allegedly over charging people who are not locals and appear to be tourist. If you are planning on dinning here please pay attention to the price and make certain your server will not overcharge you as what was done to me. The grits were very grainy and bland, the eggs were very cheesy and tasty. Waffle was meh ok. Overall food was average.Jackson Soul Food does not live up to the hype. Service was just ok, I think this establishment is getting rave reviews because pictures of "D-List celebs are posted on the walls While this maybe impressive to some, the food should be equally impressive. I did select a window seat so I can keep an eye on my car.

My buddy Dex took me to Jackson Soul Food in Miami in the heart of the historic Overtown Community. I was anxious to try their pancakes, beef sausage and ice tea. According to he, they have the best breakfast in Miami. He was correct, the pancakes were unbelievable, they are fluffy and very light. I could have had a second serving. The beef sausage was also very unique, I've never had anything close to it before for breakfast. One of our friends ordered a classic eggs, bacon, hash brown, biscuit and gravy breakfast. I will admit, I had a little food envy. The ice tea was sweet and also had a unique flavor. I should have asked for more ice with mine. There is fenced in parking across the street from Jackson Soul Food.

Food was just average. We were charged extra for things the waitress told us they come with the meal... The worst part of it was the fact that our car got broken into while eating at this establishment. And we are pretty sure it was done by some customers of theirs. We also think the staff knew who they were. I guess it's kinda of a bad neighborhood so I would recommend not going there anyway... Hey, we live and learn.

I know what you're thinking. Why was a skinny guerita wandering around Overtown on a Friday night and not packing any heat? But listen, if I can do it - you can do it. The Overtown Music Project hosted a grammy-studded jazz night at Jackson Soul to celebrate this historic landmark's glory days and begin the revival process. In fairness, there were plenty of blue-and-reds lined outside the building packing heat on my behalf -- but the experience was wonderful, and Jackson shouldn't be missed because of its location. This comfort food only deserves three stars, but the history that has walked through those doors deserve five, so let's split the difference and call it four. Take some time to invest in your city and hop off the beaten path for a minute -- you might just surprise yourself. And someday, we might be able to call Jackson Soul a cultural landmark again: overtownmusicproject.org .

Jackson Soul Food is just great. Good ol' Southern-rific breakfast selections that will make your mouth melt off of your face. I stumbled in because I was starving- had to get something 'in me belly' before doing some community service with Hand On Miami. And I was not disappointed. Awesome traditional meal (and plentiful). I had the french toast with eggs and pan sausage and ended up ordering a side of BACON (yay!). All in all great service, great food along with a very historic feeling.

I thought the price was a bit hefty but boy did i leave out there full as a tick on a bull. The pancakes are no joke! My server was on point. Have to try it again.

Excellent rib-sticking food, for the price. I had the fried catfish (very well filleted, with no bones), the macaroni & cheese (excellent "institutional style" fare), collar greens (That's how it was spelled on the menu, and it came with lots of bacon chunks - very tasty), and fries (which were just your average fries). All for $10! What? What's not to love about this?

I stumbled upon Jackson Soul Food while making daily visits to Jackson Memorial Hospital last week. It was suggested to me on Yelp, which had fabulous reviews. I LOVE Southern home-cooked meals, especially if it involves grits and biscuits. The first day I walked in (after having a slightly scary experience with People's BBQ the day before) so I was a bit hesitant. The parking lot across the street made stopping in a breeze. Olivia, the kind and quick server, immediately greeted me warmly. Of course being a slim blonde white girl I stuck out like a sore thumb, but nobody payed me any mind and I soon forgot any self-conscious notions. I ordered the smothered pork chops with grits, eggs, and two homemade biscuits. YES! Best smothered pork chops I've ever had. The staff was friendly for the most part, and I felt at home. The next day I returned and received an enthusiastic welcome-back from Olivia. She's very quick and efficient, and even remembered my name. This time I got corn beef hash with grits, eggs, and biscuits. The tab came out to be $5.83!!! Nothing makes me happier than inexpensive great food. With huge portions! Jackson Soul Food will be my first choice for breakfast/brunch any day.

I'm gonna start at the top. 1. When you walk in the place has a very soulful vibe to it. Usually there is a DVD playing on the big flat screen with what you would describe as black entertainment. But the music is good and people are generally humming along to it. There is a nice dining room with booth and a lot of tables. Personally I like to sit at the counter where you can interact with the many people from all walks of life that come in. 2. The menu is primarily breakfast although they have some other items as well that you wouldn't normally eat for breakfast such as chicken wings and fried fish. They have eggs, different kinds of sausage from pan to link to beef sausage, all of it is good. 3. Flat out they have the best pancakes of anyone in Miami. They are cooked to perfection and I swear you really don't even need syrup for them. Also they have osme of the most delicious drop biscuits you have tried around these parts as well. It tastes like Southern down hom Soulo cooking. The prices are very fair with the pancakes only costing around $4-$5. If you want sausage with them it will run you closer to $6. I am Caucasian and the first time I went in I was a little apprehensive but the people are all nice and the real reason to go is the food. I feel almost like a regular now and I enjoy the spirit that is put out by the staff and patrons. Jacksons is a true Miami gem and something that should not be missed. I am giving it 4 stars but I would say it is much more like 4.5 stars and if you are a breakfast enthusiast I could see you rating this place 5 stars easily. Don't ignore jacksons and make an effort to visit one of Miami's true gems.

Haven't been in a while, but the food is great, the staff has always been good, and it is a great atmosphere. After only being there a few times some of the people recognize me and that is always a plus. Definitely go and check it out. I always recommend it to people who are in town.

Delicious breakfast! Best pancakes in town! Make sure you try the beef sausage. Friendly service and a good way to see Historic Overtown...a side of Miami most people don't usually see.

The food was delicious! We went for breakfast and had the smothered chicken wing platter and pancakes and both were exceptional. They also make the lemonade in house which is hard to find.

A true Overtown experience like no other. A group of my coworkers came here during our lunch break. The highlights of our adventure: 1) The vast majority of the breakfast items are around $6. I received two eggs over-easy, four sausage patties, a huge plate of hashbrowns, two excellent homemade biscuits with jam, and a complementary bottle of mayo (more on this later), all for about $6.50. The food was exactly what you would expect from a diner - fattening and delicious. My friends were raving about the waffles, which apparently are good enough that they were interested in buying them as "dessert" after our huge main courses. 2) Tip isn't automatically added to the bill. This seems to be a rare thing in Miami. I like it when restaurants let me decide how much I want to tip. It usually makes me tip more. For instance, I apparently tipped 54% [on $6.50]. I'm such a high roller. Restaurants, pay attention! Good job, Jackson Soul Food. 3) Service is excellent. My friend had a chicken sandwich, and he asked for some mayo. Our uber-excited server ran away and immediately returned with a tiny personal bottle of mayo with plastic wrapping on top. I laughed, and our waiter got even more excited. "Do you like mayo? I'll bring YOU mayo TOO!" Three of us ended up leaving with our own little souvenir bottles of mayo. That's what I call service. Also: youtube.com/watch?v=s-Bv… This is a restaurant for people who want to immerse themselves in the interesting cultural experience that is Overtown. I won't say it's safe (apparently a previous reviewer had their car broken into), and I won't say you'll be comfortable the entire time, but it's a good way to enjoy a good meal and to learn a bit about how people not from Brickell/South Beach live in Miami. Jackson Soul Food gave me an experience that few restaurants in this town can offer, and for that, it wins 5/5 stars from me.

Nothing that stands out. We had breakfast and just came because of the great reviews but honestly the strawberry waffles sauce was too artificial, it would be better if they had home made sauce, the waffles by itself were good. I tried the grilled salmon with egg and hash browns, but the salmon was a bit fishy perhaps this is not a place to order fish plates. The biscuits were warm and moist, delicious. But honestly we didn't want to complain with the server, she is very intimidating and had a strong appearance and attitude. She also passed by our table and started arguing with another server. Very rude and unprofessional. When we asked her for coffee she made us feel as if it we were making a lot of trouble because she had to brew it. They probably need to emphasize the management and costumer service skills. We are definitely not coming back.

First time here and I was not disappointed. My boyfriend took me here for brunch at about 11:30am. I ordered the bacon with 2 scrambled eggs, hash, a biscuit, and hot chocolate. The food was made to order and hot on delivery. My boyfriend ordered the red velvet pancakes and I tried them, they were so good. The place was extremely clean. Our waitress was very nice and attentive to us. Honestly I don't know how I have never visited this place before. I defiantly recommended it.

Interesting spot. Atmosphere not the greatest, that's minus 2 stars... It was a diner setup with not much decoration or character. There was a Beyonce video catalog playing while I was there, which was cool but was put on repeat. Could we put on Usher or Mariah's video catalog next? Just sayin...Place definitely in dire need of an atmosphere shake up & redecorating. But the food was amazing. And cheap! I couldn't understand why it was so inexpensive. French toast was upscale quality for this little diner spot. Hot cocoa yummy and flavorful. And the oatmeal was hearty too. The food didnt disappoint at all. Some of the staff were a bit clueless in regards to explaining simple menu items, but they were really nice. Should I go back to Miami, I'll definitely hit this spot up. Enjoyed it nonetheless.

Stopped here for lunch with the wife today. There are a few soul food joints in Miami but none can compete with Jackson's. Service isn't always perfect but there are never any surprises with the food. Great every time.

Wow exceptional...Delicious red velvet pancake..grits and eggs were good...tasty bacon you can eat al day... One problem the server at the end took forever bringing the check. We actually waited another 25 minutes. Very clean and if I am in Miami again I will be there.

The great reviews were very deceiving. The gentleman who served us was very nice but that's the only nice thing I can say. The menu was sticky and greasy, the coffee carafe was also sticky and not acceptable. The food was also nothing to brag about. To add to my experience the bill was wrong but since there was nothing detailed I couldn't tell where the mistake was. To those who love this place, I'm perplexed. I will never be back.

Home fries are really good.. but the service and the experience .... First of all our waiter kept on coming to our table, especially when we were ready to order or ask something, and then he would get distracted while standing there and then wander off...??!. Also it's 12:30 PM.. who only serves breakfast at this hour.... I understand that this is Overtown, but it's not a good experience when a homeless guy comes up to you in the restaurant asking for money... then the same guy waits for you outside the restaurant and follows you to make sure you give him the money.. Creepy. Definitely will not be going back again. oh.. the food? nothing really stuck out besides the home fries - which I can make at home.

I must preference my review by saying that it's less then disappointing to have to write negative commentary about this establishment. Yet I must be true to all my fellow foodies out there. This place was just beyond terrible. If I wasn't out of town i would of got in my vehicle and left. The service was by any standard less then lackluster. The waitress performance was from the inception was grievous. She acted like she was doing as a favor if dare go there DO NOT allow teresa as your waitress!!!! I order chicken and waffles with soft scramble eggs. I got eggs that seem like they just cracked the eggs open and waved the eggs over the skillet. Not actually putting them in a hot skillet. My waffle was just barley done. Mind you they didn't bring it out until 5 mins later. Mind you this is Chicken & Waffles. I told the manager and instead of him doing something about it he sent the nonchalant waitress back to handle the disaster of a meal and service. I finally got my meal and it still was of a epic failure by any Culinary standard. Next I will be better serve just eating at the local gas station. At least the coffee is good. YUCK!!!!

I believe when the customer service is of high quality then that ultimately springboards the dining experience to another level. Long story short, we were greeted and seated right away. Drinks and cornbread came out pretty swiftly. I ordered their lemon pepper wings meal with sides of fries, candied yams, & mac n cheese. The lemon pepper seasoning was just right. Not too salty and not too tart. Skin was crisp and juicy on the inside. First soul food joint where there was nothing to be seen on my plate at the end except the bone remains of the delicious lemon pepper wings. No to go box. That's a good thing. Overall, the food was great and our waiter provided one of the best dining/customer service experiences that I had ever received from any restaurant establishment.

The food here is always adequate, actually better than adequate. The service here always leaves something to be desired. A few years ago the staff got a grant and went through service training. That spirit lasted about six months. Since then it's back to its norm - slow and lacking.

Amazing food and super kind staff! Everything was BEYOND TASTY! It started pouring after we finished eating and as we were about to cross the street and run to the car, a young gentleman from Jackson Soul Food appeared with an umbrella and escorted us to the car so we didn't get wet. Thank you!

We were visiting Miami and we just so happened to Google a restaurant near Jungle Island. This one came up. So we went over for breakfast. It was very good. Good food and excellent service. We even got a little history about the restaurant and Overton. I'd most definitely visit this place again when I'm in Miami!

It was my first time at the restaurant and I wasn't disappointed. This is a great little gem in Overtown. Simple food done right. My meal: Pancakes: They were fluffy and lightly sweet, I can never get it like that at home so that was a huge plus for me. Eggs: Had them scrabbled, they were okay, should have had them fried. Bacon: They fried them just like I like them, slight soft. Biscuits: On point! Overall I had a timid start to this place so I'm really eager to try more, like the chicken wings and the waffles. I'm really glad I finally try Jackson's because I really love breakfast, its my favorite meal of the day and this place has pulled on my heart's strings.

We had a catering event last Tuesday and scrambled to try to get someone to cater. Jackson's Soul Food came to the rescue. We ordered a pan of collared greens and candied yams; it was delicious! They even threw in a pan of corn bread. That was my first time eating from them. The only bad thing I have to say about that is that their staff is a little unprofessional and they are a bit pricey compared to the other restaurants we were trying to cater from. To stay competitive I would recommend going down a little on the price.

Upon flying into Miami, we all knew that the first stop was to find a great place for breakfast. My mom suggested that we try this place that she'd come across online. I'm so glad she did. We had a fantastic breakfast - fried chicken and waffles, catfish, homemade biscuits, cinnamon pancakes, salmon croquettes. It's a no frills kind of family owned and run restaurant sitting next to a church in downtown Miami. But, the food is good and the portions are large for a reasonable price. Looking around the place, you could tell that their patrons were familiar faces coming time and time again to sink their teeth into delicious, well-seasoned, hot food. Skip the sweet tea and salmon croquettes but otherwise, this place was a winner.

  • Yisel C.

The food is delicious! I had the best grilled chicken and candied yams! Will definitely be back! The other 2 people in my party also enjoyed their meal. Salmon croquettes look delicious. The area is a bit scary, but the flavorful food totally makes up for it! And it is very affordable and clean. Service was a bit slow.

Food is Delicious but service is bad..If your really hungry this is not the place to go on a Sunday afternoon. After getting my own menu and 15 min of waiting someone finally came over to take our order. She gave me a hug which helped and the service got better after that. ..

"Why are you guys going to Overton? Its the compton of Miami" was the first thing our cab driver told us as we headed off to Jackson Soul Food from our friends place. As we walked in we were greeted with the "are these guys lost??" stares as we were clearly the minority walking into the restaurant. Well, we just sat ourlves and moved to the closest table. After that fact, it was all good as everyone settled into the fact that we were clearly from out of town and just looking to eat some breakfast. After reading all of the reviews on this place I obviously disagree with how good the food was. I had the catfish and grits. Now it wasn't bad food but I have had much better soul food and if the name of your restaurant is "Soul Food" I was expecting a little more. And while the service wasn't reflected in the 2 stars, it was really good. I would say the service was more of a Southern comfort atmosphere than anything else. Pass.

Surprise, surprise! For years, I've been trying to get to Jackson's for a good soul food breakfast. Their wonky hours (closed by 1pm) kept me away. Being off on a Friday to prepare for the holidays made it finally possible to swing by with a visiting friend. I've passed this location many times and watched the transformation to a beautiful exterior, thanks to a neighborhood development grant. What greeted me upon entry was more than I ever expected. The interior is sooo nicely decorated. There are marble counters and tables, cherrywood chairs and sleek leather booths. Flat-screen televisions and a surround-sound speaker system make you feel like you're eating in a movie theatre. Now to the food: What an extensive breakfast menu! All of my breakfast favorites in one place and at perfect prices. The food was piping hot when it got to the table and mmm, mmm good!!! I ordered the smothered chicken wings w/ eggs, grits and toast. So delicious! Coffee is given in a carafe to keep warm and so you can replenish your own cup at will. I thought that was a nice touch. I'm excited to make it back to Jackson Soul Food. It'll have to wait till my next day off, I guess.

The service was horrible, it was as if we were not even sitting there. You would think that the service would be superb bring that the food is disgusting. I ordered the waffles & pan sausage & I received a half cooked waffle & frozen jimmy dean sausages. It was disgusting!!!!! I do not recommend this place to anyone. It's an overpriced ghetto wanna be restaurants with ghetto unprofessional people working there. You will get a laugh there if you do go because of the clown waitress with drawn on eyebrows and clown makeup she paints on, smh. This is the worst spot I've been at since moving here in the last year & a half.

Haven't had any bad experiences here. I tend to eat breakfast and had dinner before. Breakfast is good to me when I let them know how I want it. Dinner, the veggies or fruit to me like okra and tomatoes , yams, etc. are good to me. I haven't had any other meats other than fish and the seasoning was good, but it still had that "water" taste and I didn't eat it all. Maybe if they would've soaked it in buttermilk it would've gotten rid of the taste. Other than that my sister said the pork chops are good and my oldest said the oxtails were as well. Well seasoned old fashioned soul food. Only speaking on dishes I've had. It's hard to find a restaurant with decent soul food. This spot is good. And my service and server was on point and nice. And I appreciate them taking me and my party close to closing time and we never felt rushed.

I do not typically rate resturant or share my opinion on forums such as this one, but the customer service was so poor in this resturant it took away from the dishes that were being served. This morning I attend the Jackson soul food resturant and ordered pancakes and bacon. One would think this would be a very easy dish to create, but it took the Jackson staff an additional 15 minutes to plate the dish, after other individuals at my table had recieved thiers. This would not have been so bad, if it was the only issue that occurred. I also observed patrons on this resturant to just be able to walk back in the kitchen. Now I do not know if these individuals were employed here or if they were legitametly patrons, but either way it does not look good. How is this even sanitary? If you do decide to visit this resturant be prepared to wait an extended period of time for everything. This includes: acknowledgement, drinks, food and change from the bill.

I go to Jackson (no "s") about once per month and almost always have fried fish or salmon croquettes, and they never disappoint. They are usually very busy early during the week and on Sunday afternoons, but if you have a bit of patience, you'll go away happy and satisfied. Try the seafood, wings, collard greens, biscuits and cornbread.

Ask for Antoinette! She's funny and down to earth. I told her I was a virgin and that this was our first visit, she welcomed us with a few of her favorites! My baby sister and I enjoyed the food. The catfish with hash browns was amazing and lil sis had salmon croquettes with grits and homemade biscuits. My little sister didn't love it but I did as they we're fresh out of the oven. The prices weren't bad either.

The service I had here today was great . The waiter was very attentive. My friend and I Was engaged In a conversation so we were really not ready to order. The waiter got the hint and gave us space . I was impressed that two extra people came to make sure that we got our order even though the waiter was giving us time . The food was amazing . My friend never had soul food and loved it . I will be spending my money here in the future . Great job !

I'm surprised this place doesn't have more reviews from local Miami Yelpers! Seriously! I came here on a recent Friday with a friend who was craving authentic fried chicken. He works downtown, he asked his co-workers where he should try, and they recommended Jacksons in Overtown. We arrived at around 1:15 and the place was maybe 1/3 full of patrons. Our server was there right way with water, cutlery and menus. As others have said, the food here is great, true soul food, and their prices are very reasonable for what one gets. I had their meat loaf platter that came with 3 sides (I chose mashed potatoes/gravy, corn and broccoli) and a soft drink. The total was $11 and change, and there was a lot of food! The only critical comment is that my mashed potatoes were cold (not just lukewarm, but cold). Note as well that they serve canned soft drinks, rather than fountain service. Service on this day was good, but know that they seem to bring out food as its ready, vs. serving everyone at a particular table at the same time. In our case, my friend ordered something from their breakfast menu with a side of chicken wings, and his meal was served to him at least 5 minutes before mine came out. This restaurant is quite nice inside and out. The table tops are all granite, booths and chairs are dark wood with leather upholstery. They have a number of flat screen TVs as well. There's a parking lot in the back, which seems like the best place to park (everyone seems to back into the spaces rather than parking head in) unless you're lucky enough to snag a meter space on the (one way) street in front. Come here for really good, genuine soul food that will win you over on your first visit, and prices that are more than reasonable. Restaurants like Yardbird can't hold a candle to this place as far as authenticity. Also, unlike Yardbird which charges outrageous prices, this place won't cost you a few days' pay to dine here.

Best Soul Food Place Hands Down! Loved the experience at the restaurant. Our waiter Bo was right on point and very polite. Our food was a bigger portion than we expected and we saved the rest for dinner. This is a must visit place if your visiting Overtown in Miami.

I was very disappointed in the service and food I received on my recent visit to Jacksons. It was highly recommended and honestly it did not live up to the hype. The waiter took forever to attend us, he constantly kept forgetting what we ordered. At one point he brought out my food then took it away and brought another plate. He did not apologize nor say anything. The food was tasteless and greasy. Our Mac and cheese was cold, sweet potato fries were cold and all very small butt end pieces. He also continued to forget our drinks and we never got our order of corn bread which was supposed to come with our meals. He also took money from the change I was supposed to get back and their was no formal receipt. He handed me a piece of cardboard with a price. It was disappointment after disappointment.

Jacksons Soul Food always delivers! I reminisce my grandmothers cooking every time I eat here! The selection is very southern and very good! I invite everyone to try the Honey Glazed Grilled Shrimp, OMG The wait staff is very friendly and professional! Everyone there is uniformed. It's also a very clean establishment and the bathrooms are pretty decent as well. The owner often pops out to greet and check on patrons! Jacksons Soul Food is definitely a gem in the Overtown area!

Great spot for your soul food cravings!! Many of the past reviewers stated that the staff was unfriendly, but my girlfriend & I did not encounter that problem at all. On the contrary, every person we walked by in this establishment on the way to our table greeted us. Not to mention that our waitress (Treece or Trixie, I believe) was very attentive & friendly as well. I had the oxtail with white rice, Mac and cheese, fried okra and cornbread. Everything was on point! My girlfriend ordered the chicken and waffles with a side of grits. Mannnn were her grits & chicken wings delicious! Luckily for me, she shares & we both took a little from each others plate. We both left with our tummies full & hearts happy! "Barriga llena, corazon contento"

Another awesome soul food spot. I have been here for breakfast and lunch and let me just say that I have yet to be disappointed. I love the smothered wings, mac and cheese and candied yams lunch and the cheese eggs, bacon and hash brown breakfast. They also serve many traditional southern favorites at breakfast such as grits, fish, pork chops and the list goes on. There is something here for everyone.

Sooooooooouuuuuuuuuul foooooooood. First things first, they have a lunch special every Wednesday. Don't miss out like I did. I went on a Wednesday and ordered off the regular menu, which wasn't bad, but I could have had fried chicken, cornbread, grits and eggs, and a drink for $6. I didn't ask if there were lunch specials and our server didn't offer to tell us. What I did order, the smothered liver, mac and cheese, cabbage, and candied yams, was A-OK. The smothered liver was delicious, the mac and cheese was crispy good and the candied yams were all gone in my belly. Skip the cabbage. I feel it didn't have enough seasoning. The portions of meat, as you can probably see from all the pictures posted, are large and when you order from the main menu your plate includes three sides. Prepare to feel stuffed at the end of the meal or take some home with you. Their online menu needs to be updated so don't even bother looking at it. Ask for the specials, if any, when you get to the restaurant. The desserts listed online included coconut cake and peach cobbler. The day I visited, neither of these was on the menu. Pet peeve: here were a couple of flies flying around our table, which was in the center of the dining area, but the place looked clean. Anyway, all the booths lining the walls were taken, so of course this place has a following and fans. Curiosity will probably bring me back on another Wednesday to try the lunch special.

Why have a hostess star and there is no hostess?? Standing., waiting, hungry. I wanted to leave but stayed because I wanted to try this place. Anyway, a lady came to the hostess stand to say I don't know and left us. So we kept waiting. And waiting. This is a Sunday and they are pretty busy but there seemed to be no one in charge. I finally went to the back of the restaurant to order and presto I waited and waited and no one even acknowledge d I was waiting. But this time my party of 3 said forget it I said no I still wanna giveit a shot. I looking at about 5 waiters walking in circles no one is working together or even moving with urgency. Maybe they are paid by the hour and not waiter wages. Then I noticed the one ls who were working hard like Amber, Stephanie n Brenda Food was reasonable but service needs to step it up!!

Nestled in Historic Overtown, Jackson's Soulfood Restaurant is proud to be a part of a community fastly becoming a multicultural area, where loyal customers, tourists, politicians, class reunions, churchfolk, and your average street walker, all come for a great place to eat. When you enter the restaurant feel free to seat yourself. I was greeted by a personable waitress, Anita, who incidentally is that one best employee, that every company seems to have. My coffee came out quickly, and not long after the food came out. I ordered Fried Fish with Grits. The fish was perfectly fried and seasoned. The grits were great and adding a little butter, made them even better. Our server checked on me throughout the meal, and made me feel that she appreciated my visit as she thanked me for coming. Timing is everything and having been there before and watching some wait times that could take some customers to their breaking point, the weakest link tends to be on the tables on the north side of the restaurant. If management takes notice and addresses it, it will keep Jackson's reputation in tact.

We decided to skip the mimosas and the eggs Benedict this last Sunday, opting instead to visit a local favorite in historic Overtown that we'd often driven past. Jackson Soul Food has been around forever, and the reasons why were readily evident. With simple decor, Jackson rests on the laurels of its food to lure customers big and small, many of which -- Isiah Thomas, Muhammad Ali, and Dwyane Wade among them -- are pictured on the walls, proving yet again that good food is a great equalizer. The breakfast menu is extensive, and, at first glance, it will be a bit intimidating in the best of ways. From grilled chicken to chicken wings, country bacon to savory waffles, choosing among the seemingly endless choices will be tough, and you'll walk away wishing that nature had granted you a stomach able to accommodate so much more. This happened to me. I ordered the country sausage entree, alongside which were fluffy scrambled eggs with cheese, hash browns, and two biscuits. The sausage was the best I'd had in a while. I really can't say enough about the casing, which crisped perfectly when cooked. All this said, I came to find out later that "smothered" on the menu meant smothered in gravy. So you see, while I was more than content with my order... I really wish I could've had some gravy, too. It's that vicious, gluttonous cycle that binds Yelpers together. I'm sure this'll happen to me again. I'm sure it'll happen to you, too. It's the mark of a pretty awesome place. No matter how happy you are with your meal, you'll already be looking forward to the next one. I for one can't wait to stop by Jackson again.

I really enjoyed this place. I ordered the salmon croquettes and grits. The salmon was fried to perfection and was extremely flavorful. The grits were nice and creamy as well. The restaurant is clean and updated and the staff is very friendly. The walls are covered with pictures of famous African Americans and art. What I didn't like about the restaurant was the fact that the waitress took quite a while to bring drinks and all of the drinks are canned, so there's no free refills. I wouldn't recommend the canned apple juice. It tasted more like can than apple. Overall, I'd recommend this place. :)

Great service. Good food at reasonable prices. Staff was cordial and very hospitable. Attentive to our every move. Service was awesome! I had chicken & waffles with a side of grits and biscuits. Biscuits were the best I've had in a very long time. Waffles were delicious. Grits were good. Chicken was ok, seems like not a lot of batter was used. Looking forward to visiting in the near future during lunch or dinner.
