I got to try out Elsa's and loved it! I started off with a Bad Juanita (a raspberry margarita) and boy was it good. Apparently you can't order more than 3 in one visit. I can't even imagine ordering 2! Tasty and strong. I couldn't decide what to get, so I took my friend's suggestion and got the shrimp tacos. Very tasty! We also had the Queso Loco (queso with chorizo) which was really good. I wasn't a huge fan of the chips they serve, but once they were covered in Queso Loco I didn't really notice them much.

We decided to branch out and try a new Mexican place. Elsa's is not a traditional Mexican restaurant, it doubles as a sports bar. Right away you can tell it's different by the menu which includes chicken wings , pizza, hot dogs, and of course Mexican food. The place was clean and the service was OK. Don't take that as being bad, it was just ok, the hostess did her job, the server did his job, nothing more, nothing less. The food was also in the same category. It wasn't bad and it wasn't great, it was ok. I had the fajita burrito and my wife had the fajita wrap. We were hungry and the food was tasty but nothing to rave about. This isn't a bad place and it isn't a great place it is average. We may give this place another try someday, but based on my initial experience, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone because it is a "so so" restaurant and there are so many Mexican restaurants around that are more than just average.

Over charged way too much and refused to adjust the bill instead she tried to explain why she charged 18.67 for 2 mini burritos and a drink. I can go almost any place and order 2 burritos and a drink for under 10.00 The beans were dry and the beef was over cooked

Love the quesadillas!!! Great rice, and chips and salsa are on point! Only drawback here is parking and the overall appearance inside- but if you want good Mexican, this is a great local spot!

I luv this lil place tacos on Monday now 1.50 instead of 1.00 still good and luv the commercial

Environment was good. Chicken tacos were average. I asked for 10 wings with 2 sauces, which I've never had a problem with at other restaurants, and they refused to do that. The Margarita was very good. Overall was expecting more.

My wife and I decided to try Elsa's as we were in the mood for Mexican and have never been there.. We walked in this past Sunday afternoon and there were no other diners, only football fans at the bar, as it's also a sports bar. That should have been a sign. They have a nice menu and since I love Chimichangas and they have 4 on the menu I ordered the shredded beef chimichanga and my wife ordered the seafood. I have had chimichangas at many restaurants in the Tampa bay area and in Texas and Arizona and know that they are deep fried and should be crispy. I give this place 1 star because we had 3 separate servers including the manager but the chimichangas (we both ordered a chimichanga) were horrible and not even worth 1 star. Ours were both beyond soft; they were actually mushy. I alerted the manager to this and she said that is normal because they deep fry it and then add a small amount of sauce and cheese to the top and bake it implying the sauce made it mushy. There was no sauce on the ends and it was mushy there too. She said matter of factly that the sauce makes it soggy as if that were normal for a chimichanga She did offer to try to make another but my thoughts were- what would the cook do to it as payback for my complaint and why not make it right the first time if they knew how to make it right. What a waste of $30!!! I did suggest that if they are going to put the sauce and cheese on then put it on the side and keep it crispy as all chimichangas shoud be. A mushy chimichanga is extremely gross and if they continue to cook it this way then I would say avoid this place. We would go back if they would learn how to cook it right as the shredded beef had an interestingly spicy flavor and the seafood, though sparse, was not too bad (she would not reorder the seafood though)

The food has gone down hill and that is why I am writing a negative review so the owners/managers can make some changes for customers to come back.... We ordered 2 orders of "3 Hard Taco's" and the shells were Stale and not crunchy. The ground beef tasted like Pure Salt and could not take another bite.. Plus Taco's only come with your choice of meat, sour cream, and cheese... Very Plain! Ordered Queso Blanco as an appetizer.. Had no taste to it and the cheese got hard after 5 minutes. Will not be coming back to Elsa's for a long time.. Very disappointing!!

I've eaten here twice with friends. I am from Texas and find it hard to get good Mexican food in Tampa. That said, it's pretty good here. Most recently I ordered the beef fajita salad and ask for a side of queso and salsa to be my dressing. The white queso is creamy and good - I like the white over the yellow that is on most Texas Tex-Mex. Food is prepared and served quickly and they can accommodate a large crowd of us by moving tables together. I would choose it as good lunch restaurant on the weekend.

  • Wes M.

I frequent here on a weekly basis. The Bad Juan definitely packs a punch and if your coming in for a strong margarita it is highly recommended! I love the chicken fajitas and they give you more than enough! Great atmosphere with big screens so you can catch a game that's on and staff is always fast and friendly!

  • Chris H.

I can say the people were very nice. They should give up on the food part and just turn it into a full bar and be done with it. Never thought that beef and chicken would be completely devoid of flavor but to my surprise the tacos had no flavor. Thank god for cheese. My wife's fajitas didn't have any seasoning on them. Salsa? Can you say pace picante sauce? Cause that's what the jars in the back say. Like I said. Very nice servers, but the kitchen staff forgot how to cook. Sorry but it's true

My boyfriend and I came here for lunch and didn't have a great experience. Our waitress seemed half interested in getting our order and was severely inattentive, and she also got a few things mixed up from said lack of attention. I don't remember exactly what my boyfriend ordered, but I remember him being very disappointed with the quality of his meal. I ordered a steak fajita salad and it was good, until later when I felt like I had food poisoning. I'll be sticking to Vallarta's from now on.

One of our favorite spots after church. Pollo Blanco is my favorite. Chili is great. Quesadillas are yummy. Huge portions, good prices, friendly service. One of the best in Lutz. I have attended and hosted huge group parties here, too. They make everything very special.

  • Whitney S.

Terrible terrible I got shredded beef tacos, the taco taste like it was pre made out of a tex mex box as soon as I pick up the taco all the beef fell through the bottom. Chicken enchiladas no sauce just enter cheese on top of Tortilla I will never eat here again. I rather go to taco bell. It's same concept

For some reason you can't have your margarita straight up, against corporate policy. They have to put ice your drink. After checking with soneone our waitress said she could get me a margarita straigt up but it would have to be 6-8 oz???? Never mind just bring me the corporate approved version. Tortilla chips and salsa leave a bad after taste. Tilapia fajita was tasty. Pork carnita Quesada was a large portion but just ok. Guacamole was pretty bland.

    (2)
  • Jack C.

First time here. Nachos and salsa were lame. Got iced teas that tasted so awful we sent them back. The server said 'yeah we have complaints and have a call into our folks that handle that'. So they know but continue to serve stuff that isn't drinkable? The enchilada dinner wasn't too bad though. The rice was gummy and beans were dry and crusty looking. Not sure I'll go back with Varilitias around the corner.

I really wanted to like this place, it's close by and we know people there. But the food is just not very good. Fish Tacos were very sub-par. Wings are nothing special and greasy. Tacos, etc. are just ho hum. Other dishes are just normal strip mall tex-mex. They seem to want to be more of a sports bar. The service is great, it's just the food that is blah. Someone needs to completely redo the menu and recipes.

We love Elsa's and are regulars. Interesting mix of Mexican, pizza, wings etc. I've never Not loved what I've ordered. I recommend the Super and a Bad Juan.

My husband and I enjoy our trips to Elsa's. We start off with the super addicting Queso Loco, then I like their fish or shrimp tacos. The staff is nice and attentive.

I was interested because it is call Mexican Restaurant and sports bar. It is typical american sports bar, lots of tvs, that servers free chips & salsa and pre-made margaritas. What I like to call Cracker-Mexican. Wings, burgers and some mexican food. Not adobo or ancho chili wings, but thai and jamican jerk wings. Authentic Mexican is one of my favorites, but have a great disdain for the frozen stuff. I have no problem with fusion, but when it starts from a can or frozen it is not for me. The bar side was full and good bar crowd being waited on by one server and the bartender, not enough staff. What seemed to be a manager came behind the bar and made a blender and then poured himself a glass, but did not help wait on any of us that needed assistance. I will not be back, but I understand that there seems to be few options in the area

I'm fairly certain this restaurant is merely a front for La eMe* ... how else could such terrible food keep a business afloat who's supposed purpose is to provide food? I've patronized this Tex-Mex mistake several times because (a) I'm a masochist and (b) it's about a 2-minute walk from my place of employment. I've really tried to find something on the menu I can learn to love simply because the convenience of the restaurant's location is undeniable, and when I'm really hungover and need to appear "normal" to co-workers, Elsa's waffle fries are pretty damn delicious (and the sole reason this place is getting 2 stars instead of 1). Every other item on the menu that I've sampled has been Muy desagradable. If I disappear mysteriously as a result of unearthing a Mexican-American drug cartel please, tell my family I love them. *La eMe or The Mexikanemi (as it's known in Texas) is the Mexican-American mafia, a highly organized North American crime syndicate...I catch a lot of the Biography Channel...now you know.

Delicious Mexican food! The menu is more vast than the 'fast food' Mexican cuisine places and the food is fresh & the flavors individually jump off the plate!

Sports bar Mexican restaurant. Nothing to write home about. Average food. Honestly, some of Taco Bell's food has more flavor. I ordered the Mini Super Burrito with shredded beef. It was more like flavorless shredded beef with a tortilla laid across it and then the other items piled on top and beside it. The shredded cheese on top was good and plentiful but it literally looked as if they'd just dumped it out of the Kraft bag. Adding salt and pepper to the burrito did help immensely. I'm giving 3 stars because it wasn't terrible but it definitely wasn't better than average. Now the Raspberry Bad Juan Margarita was spectacular. It's a great atmosphere if you want to come hang out with friends, have some drinks, and watch a football game but we won't go out of our way to return.

The atmosphere is bustling with great sounds of people enjoying each other. Our service was great thanks to Amanda. Our food was absolutely delicious. The drinks kept coming and the table was kept clean. The choice of music is 80's rock. Not your typical Mexican flare. We do not think that it works. But that is just not our choice for the music for this type of restaurant. We were asked several times if everything was ok. It was ok for everything minus the music. We like 80's, just not here. ;0)

The best carnitas this side of Texas! Try the super or wet burrito. ..you won't be disappointed.

Me and my wife are new to the area. We tried Elsa's for the first time. The food was perfect. The waitress was awesome. The GM came by every table. We are impressed and will be back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My wife and I have been here three or four times. We keep going back with a prayer of being happy on each visit because we LOVE Mexican food. Each time is worse than the last as far as the food goes! I have never met a taco I did not like until eating here. The bland thing is covered in so much cheese that the people next to me would not stop laughing at it. I got three and was finished after the first bite. My dog is going to be mad at me when I try to pawn them off on her. The beer is good and the margarita is fair at best. They call them the Bad Juan for several reasons it seems. I hear the wings are very good so I guess when I want a beer and wings, I will be back...? I must be touched! This must be a front for a mafia laundry or they could not stay in business.

Came here the other night with my friend, after a friend suggest we try it. The salsa had an odd taste and the chips were different. Her tamale disappointed her, and my chimichanga was ok but nothing special. It was also very small for the price you pay. Re fried beans seemed overly dry. The chicken in both of our meals was delicious though, very juicy and not dried out. Service was standard. Probably won't make another special trip out for it.

My family of 5 enjoys Elsa's. In our opinion the prices are good and the food is good. We love the queso!

  • Beth D.

I'm going to preface by saying I have a family of picky eaters... and this is my kind of Mexican! The tacos (beef and cheese) were great, and they didn't skimp on the meat or cheese which some places do when you order it plain. Unfortunately, at other Mexican restaurants you usually gets bits of lettuce or tomato in your plain taco, but not so at Elsa's. That may not seem very important to you, but having a place that takes care to give you what you want (and nothing extra in our case!) is a sign of pride in a restaurant. The kids meals were tasty too. Getting a two year old to eat anything can sometimes be a challenge, but my son loved the chicken fingers. And last but not least, our server was fantastic. Very friendly and good with kids. :-)

Good Mexican food, good drinks, and nice to catch whatever sports action of the day is playing across the many tvs.

  • Christy P.

Good food, but not the best I've had. Our server was great and offered many off menu options like homemade green salsa, and Baja tacos. We felt like they put way too much cheese and lettuce on the tacos. Nothing we tried had a lot of flavor. The Bad Juan margaritas were strong, but good. There are places closer to us with better Mexican food, soooo......

  • Chad L.

As long as you enter thinking Beef O'Brady's and Winners Sports Grill, you should be fine. Unfortunately, my wife and I entered thinking "Mexican restaurant" and were sorely disappointed. I won't say the food was bad but it surely was bland. Luckily, there were about a thousand TVs on to take our mind off of the food. If I ever go back (doubtful) it would be to watch a game and eat chicken wings.

    (2)
  • Rock T. Boat C.

Have not, I repeat, have not had a good meal there yet. Live close and have many friends and family that somehow end up there at dinner time. I am still waiting for something good to eat to be placed in front of me, besides their wings....Jeesh!

    (1)
  • Aj W.

The place was not impressive at all. The food was mediocre at best. The service was terrible. I don't think the servers knew what each other were doing. We had four different servers come to the table and take a drink order prior to actually receiving drinks. The only server that will stop at your table and help you is your own. I most likely will not be returning to Elsa's again.

    (2)
  • Jeff L.

Nice preparation on Mexican food. Variety of nachos (fajita style) and everything is fresh and tasty. Their queso is home made and not from a can, so that says a lot. The only reason for 4 stars and not 5 is the house margarita is too sweet.

    (4)
  • Dawn P.

i was a little disappointed in the all you can eat buffet.....for $8.95 a person. It looked like it was from the night before...I was not impressed with the little buffet, it looked like they were just desperate for money or something. the servers were fine. the restaurant was clean. i would go back if they had a better excitement of the place and to play mexican music or try to make it feel more festive, but i would only go for the drink specials. I was not impressed with my visit.

  • Sarah T.

This is a Sports Bar, with Mexican Food and a huge menu of options, including American, to choose from. I've enjoyed a lot of the choices and I go back frequently. The place gets packed all the usual nights/times you'd expect, and it's a good time. The salsa is delicious. The bad Juan's dangerous, and the beer is cold.

  • Shannon M.

Let's just say Bad Juan Margarita! Delicious and after one you will be amazed! They cut you off at 3, that strong, but amazing! Cool atmosphere with lots of booths, tables and T.v's on the walls for game days. Service is hit or miss, most everyone is good. I got the Mini Super which is a smaller version of the Super and it was awesome, Fresh and tasty! It comes with refried beans, and your choice of ground beef, shredded beef, chicken, chorizo or pork carnitas, topped with a mild sauce, lettuce, pico de gallo, and aged cheddar cheese, I got Chorizo on mine, and all I can say is yumm, it had a kick and was enough food to fill you up. My boyfriend got the Steak Fajitas and was very tasty, and he loved them. They have a huge menu, something for everyone.

    (4)
  • Bret A.

Great food! Try the carnitas pork for just about any entree. The quest blanco is excellent. The atmosphere is a nice cafe with booth and table seating. The restaurant also has a full bar with large screen TVs and raised tables for a sports feel with a classy twist. The margaritas are good although I think their regular or flavored margaritas are better than their signature Bad Juan margarita. This is a favorite!

  • Amber V.

Going out for dinner and we had a quick sit down, but over 45minute wait to order food. Luckly out table had a mini tv to watch and all u can eat free chips and boring salsa. When food came finally my chimichanga is made Exactly like a wet burrito and the size of a mini ( vs normal). Supposedly they fry it ,douse in sauce and then broil. Boring beans, and rice. Fantastic margaritis and " the grinchmas" drink. Fajitas were thickly sliced and hard to eat but nice presentation. Bland guac. Tacos were cold soft shells ( & they charged extra!) With hot, average meat. Atmosphere was fun! Waitress was nice and too busy. After a complaint of my chimichangathey did half price the entree

    (3)
  • Diana B.

Two words - Bad Juan! They make the best margaritas on the planet. The food is good, but seriously....two Bad Juan's are the top. They sneak up on you fast!

    (5)
  • Daniel D.

The good: The food is tasty and the margaritas are so strong that you'll going to need a cab ride home if you drink any more than one of them. The bad: Don't get anything labeled "mini." I ordered the ministeak fajita burrito thinking it would just be a normal size burrito given that their only other size is "super" which, from the description would lead you to believe is the size of a human baby. When they delivered the plate I genuinely thought it was just a salad that went with the burrito I would eventually get. Nope, it was the whole thing. I devoured it in a few bites because the steak was so delicious, but I was left hungry. So hungry in fact that I ended up ordering an order of hot wings. They were good -- on par with Beef o' Bradys I'd say.

I do believe in second chances! Sometimes, even third and fourth when it comes to food, but not for Elsa's. Unfortunately, this is one place I will not crave. My second visit was just last month, and I still wasn't impressed. Good Mexican food contains some of the freshest and simplest ingredients, but when things aren't fresh, it's very apparent. Here's what we ordered: Seafood Chimichanga: Okay, don't judge me. This was my husband's choice. If you got the same first impression with this place, you'd know ordering this dish would just increase your disappointment. Definitely not fresh ingredients, from the shrimp and crab to the cheese and rice. Black Bean Soup Taco Salad: This was my choice. Although it is possible to goof up a salad, I figured a Mexican restaurant would pride and present themselves with one heck of a taco salad. Wrong. Just a bunch of shredded iceberg in a cold fried flour tortilla bowl with some black beans, diced tomatoes, and tons and tons of cheese. I asked for a second plate to pile all of it on. No dressing, no flavor, no good. The best part of this place were the chips and salsa that come with any table. Chips were good. Salsa wasn't the fresh, authentic salsa I was expecting. More of a pureed tomato base. The atmosphere was also on top of the list for biggest offender. Several restaurants have come and gone in that same location - I think they all use the same decor, but adding the cheap Mexican style accents really pushed this place over the edge of "sign me up for Restaurant Impossible," which then brings me to the service. We got there at 1pm on a Saturday. We were greeted by no one and stood there waiting for at least 3-4 minutes before someone in kitchen noticed us. The hostess apologized explaining a large party had just left. Although there were clean booths available, we had to wait on them to clear off a specific booth in a specific section - we were the only customers in the dining area (there were three men at the bar taking shots with the bar tender, more on that in a minute). The hostess cleared off the booth and then yelled to us to come over to our table. We then had to wait and listen to their shpeel of their "amazing margarita." We tried to eat peacefully but were distracted by the unprofessional dialogue happening at the bar. The bartender was going on and on about getting wasted while on the job and encouraging his co-workers to do the same if the mood is right. Whatever. Maybe folks up in Ohio are used to this kind of stuff, but down here in the South, you've got some tough competition when it comes to good Mexican food in Tampa Bay! Oh, by the way, my first time with Elsa's including arguing with the manager about splitting the check, another thing I guess they don't have in Ohio.

  • Joseph H.

Bad Juan margarita was too strong. Service was slow (brought appetizer with main meal), about 20 minutes for simple fajitas for two to be delivered to the table. Tacos were the worst I have ever had, fajitas not much better. Look elsewhere for your watering hole and/or sports bar experience.

    (2)
  • Kathy S.

45 minutes to get the crappiest fajitas we've ever had. Had to ask the waiter 3x to bring the beans & rice. Just awful!!

    (1)
  • Joe C.

This place is gross! They tried to feed my raw ground meat calling it a hamburger. Then the manager acted like it was my fault. The bathrooms smelled like urine and no soap. So how are the employees washing their hands? Only thing on the table that was edible was the chicken fingers that came from a bag. Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere.

    (1)
  • JimBobs G.

Elsa's is a Mexican sports bar, if you have ever heard of that before. So if you think you will like that type of atmosphere with mediocre food, you'll enjoy this place. We were there in March and May of '12 and had the same experience. I found the Mexican dishes covered, no smothered, in tasteless cheese, with stale vegetables. The rice and refried beans are no better, maybe not as good, as what I prepare at home. Beans had to have come out of a can. Basically, I think their ingredients are not fresh and tasteless. It's not horrible, but I think we will go somewhere else the next time we want Mexican food.

    (2)
  • Marsha B.

Drove all the way there, to find out it was closed for a private party... Would of been nice if they had posted it on there website.. So I did not get my bad Juan...

My favorite mexican place... period. And what a variety of food! I seriously have never had a bad meal here. And the Bad Juan Margarita.... do yourself a favor and stop at two!

    (5)
  • Erika H.

If I could give less stars I would. The fish tacos had no flavor grilled on one side and left the tortilla soggy. The shredded lettuce had a old smell to it. The Super Burrito had no flavor and a ridiculous amount of bagged shredded cheese. What a waste of 38.00 . Took most of the food home to the dogs. Don't waste your money. Table top was sticky.

We were visiting friends in Tampa. They had heard about this place so we went. When our waiter finally came to our table, he assured us he could give us his undivided attention since all his other tables were done. If that was undivided attention, I'll pass. Our order came out in shifts, so everyone didn't eat at the same time. Then the kicker....we ordered a pitcher of Sangria. It came out and tasted awful. I asked what type of liquor was added to the wine to make it taste so odd. The waiter told me they add vodka to the wine. Then he proceeded to say that was the way it was supposed to be. I have never heard of adding vodka to sangria. Even though he knew we didn't like the wine, he never tried to fix the problem. They charge 32.00 for a pitcher of sangria. When the food did arrive, it was okay, nothing out of this world. Would not return due to the overall lack of concern for a customer's satisfaction.

Well, here's a new one!! My husband and son went to Elsa's Mexican Restaurant in Lutz last night and ordered chicken wings. Elsa's has a special on Sunday's - 50 cent chicken wings. My husband was unable to eat all of his and when he asked for a take home container was told by the waitress he couldn't have one. Stunned, he asked why and was informed it was because the wings are on special. So, if I order 10 wings (that I have bought and paid for), and am full after eating 5 of them, I have to leave the remaining 5 (that I bought and paid for) at the restaurant to be thrown away???!!! That's one of the most bizarre things I've ever heard! Bye, bye Elsa's . . . . . . .

The food is bland. And everything is covered in pounds of cheese.

I was born and raised in Dayton, OH - so I grew up on Elsa's. It was my first taste of Mexican Food (yep, before Taco Bell came to town). It was also my first experience with tequila -- thank you Mr. Bad Juan - wish I could remember that nite, I was told I had a great time! Very, very pleased to see Elsa's open in my back yard in Tampa area! Went there for lunch on Sunday Jan 29. Was NOT disappointed! Chips and Salsa were outstanding - this it not store bought salsa folks! It's addictive. Small Queso Blanco was more than enough to share. So creamy and just enough jalepeno in it to spice it up a bit. Burritos are fabulous. Make sure you get them "wet". One thing for certain, you will not leave Elsa's hungry! This new location has a lot of dining room and a very big bar area with an abundance of TVs..I know you normally don't equate Mexican Food with a Sports Bar, but Elsa's makes it work. What is better than beer and limitless chips & salsa? And if you enjoy tequila, the Bad Juan drink is a must..but don't drink too many!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization.
