I went for a couple drinks and sushi rolls, they stated online that they had a happy hour but when I got there and asked the drinks were really just a dollar off. I ordered the Saketini and it was awful, I had two sips and couldn't continue. My sushi was not fresh and one was inedible. My waitress was not attentive which was so surprising since there were only three tables with guests in the whole restaurant. I would not go back, and am very confused on how this place has racked up a 4.5 star record on here.

New owners, we went for dinner in a Sunday, and even though we were literally the only patrons in the place the experience was really good. Good quality sushi. Hibachi was above average and the server was good and she was knowledgeable about the specials and dishes on the menu. I hope they succeed. Go try it people!!!!

This was our first time bc we heard the food was really good. I have to say that I loved the sushi. The atmosphere was really modern and the service was amazing. Jia was our server and she was so attentive and sweet at the same time. The wasn't many people there on a Tuesday and the music was very low, so it made it a little weird in the beginning. Jia made all that change. I will definitely go back and ask for her!

Nice setting and lighting. This place is fairly new, and I don't think many people know it's there. It's kind of hidden, so you should definitely use your GPS when finding it. Their staff was very nice, and they had pretty decent drink specials. I loved their coconut saki drink (I can't remember the exact name), but it was a highly recommended drink by the waitress if you're into lighter calories with your drink intake :-) Their sushi was pretty decent as well.

Great sushi! Beautiful modern space! When I left south beach and moved to Jacksonville I really didnt know if id find high quality creative sushi again. This food was great, and the service was 10x better than in Miami. Jia, our waitress, was super friendly and said she would send us updates on specials via facebook. Great happy hour drink specials and the raw fish was fresh. Best sushi I've had in jax yet, go now before it starts getting busy, they have only been open a couple months. Great prices too!

We just ate at Zendo tonight for the first time and loved it. We liked Akaya before but this is even better! The sushi, tempura, and pad thai we ordered were all outstanding, & the service was excellent. A very trendy, clean, upscale sushi restaurant. You have to seek out the location, however (behind Walgreens off Baymeadows and Point Meadows)... Well-worth a visit.

Overrated! My wife and I went here on Friday around 6 pm to check it out, since it was new, and it was terrible in every way! First off, I ordered a beer and it was warm. My wife did the same and her glass was dirty with lipstick still on it from the previous person. Gross! The service was so SLOW and we were 2 of only 6 people there. Our order came back wrong and we heard the manager argue with the server in the middle of the restaurant. Very unprofessional. We tried to look past all that, but even the sushi was bad. It tasted like day old grocery store sushi. I think they use different/cheaper rice or something. If the owners or management is reading this, please stop going across the street and putting your menus on cars. People don't care and it's creating debris all over the parking lot. You're trashing our town.

Zendo just opened up and going here is an experience not just a meal! It's a beautiful asian Miami inspired restaurant setting to eat in to start off. Then they have unique sushi rolls to order such as the ocean roll. ( it came in multiple little square bowls) the plating of the food is gorgeous and you would expect to see this in a 5 star restaurant or somewhere exotic ( please see photo). The sushi is delicious some rolls as always are better than others. The out of control roll and ocean roll were amoung our favorites. Although for a smaller roll the salmon katsu roll was amazing! I will definitely be back. Also because they just opened their bartender had the night off ( because it was monday a slow restaurant night) so I want to go back to try their drink specials. I will update my review once I try it. We only ordered sushi but they also have habachi meals, Katsu meals, noodles ( udon and soba) and more! :) Update: went back for some drinks and sushi! The drinks are good and strong! They do not water down the alcohol like most places. You will love it!

Slow service, sushi did not taste fresh. Too many good sushi places around Jax for me to go back. It was not crazy busy but took over a half hour to get sushi at the sushi bar. Really?? Try Fuji sushi across the street.....

I booked a reservation for my birthday party of 20 guests. When I first walked in I noticed the gorgeous decoration and neon lights, but in hindsight the service was very slow. The food was good and so were the drinks but the bartender was very slow. We ordered a margarita and asked for salt and she stated that they ran out of salt a couple of days ago. My mother asked for a draft beer and the bartender told her that it was out of order. This place really has so much potential to be more than what it is especially the bar. If it wasn't for the poor service I would be giving this place 5 stars. I hope they get new staff or train their staff members to be a little more on top of things.

Still killing the game! Zendo is well on its way to the sushi hall of fame. My favorite restaurant and only place I get sushi in and around Jax. No one can compare to the freshness, quality OR price.

WARNING: NO LONGER IS BUSINESS. I love down the street and when I was pulling in to go to Walgreens I noticed a sign in the door. The building is now for lease and is vacant!! I have tried to notify yelp but it has not gone through yet. Very sad!! I loved this place back when it was Akaya sushi and was so sad when I realized it really closed. It seemed like less than a month later and a new sign was slapped up and zendo opened. The service was good and sushi was perfect! Four stars due the location is awkward and if you didn't use yelp or live near here you wouldn't be able to find it clearly. Also, it seems there's never many people here! It's so weird because it's so beautiful and delicious!

It's a beautiful restaurant because of all the natural stone. At first glance it looks like an upscale New York Cocktail Lounge from the 1980's--which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's the multi colored neon lighting that gives it that vibe, fortunately the stone walls save it from being cheesy. I could definitely see a classy vampire making this his lair (The Hunger with David Bowie 1983) and I was grateful for the respite from the glaring noon day sun of a Florida July day. Let's talk food. Sushi. The rice was warm when our rolls were delivered to our table. Odd. Presentation was basic. Some photos of other people's sushi look incredible. Maybe Sunday is an "off" day for them because our entire experience was just OK. It seemed like there were only two people working because that is how many people I saw taking care of the entire restaurant. Granted, it wasn't packed but there were 5 other populated tables, one of them being a largeish party of 12. The service was slow but not rude. I wanted to like this restaurant but our table smelt like rancid soy sauce. I wiped it down with my napkin using some water from my water glass. It worked. The smell disappeared but it kinda left me with an icky feeling. Clean tables are a diner's first impression of a restaurant and as we all know, first impressions are hard to forget (especially if they're bad ones). I might go back if it were convenient to my errands. I don't live close by and I am rarely on this side of town. I feel like we had a 2.5 star experience. Maybe if we went on a Friday or Saturday night, we would've fared better and thus the rating would have too. As it stands, it's a definite OK. The restaurant is an eye pleaser, the food however, was less appealing.

The following review was published under my byline in the Florida Times-Union on Saturday, May 2, 2015. This is an original, unabridged version of that review. The moment you enter Zendo Sushi & Grill, chances are you'll marvel at the plush, modern décor and eye-popping electric blue and purple lighting accents. The fiber-optic jellyfish chandelier is the icing on the cake to make this dining room a decadent feast for the eyes. But for those of you whose stomachs are in fact bigger than your eyes, can Zendo's kitchen and sushi bar deliver the same decadent feast on your plate? Following in a string of Asian eateries in this space, most recently Akaya Sushi Bar & Lounge, Zendo opened in February at the edge of the West Point Meadows shopping center, near Baymeadows Road and the Interstate 295 East Beltway, behind Walgreens. Zendo holds onto Akaya's nightclubbish vibe and embellishes it with a menu of Japanese standards, including sushi and sashimi, grilled (tepanyaki) entrees (no tableside grill performances here), teriyaki, tempura and katsu entrees and noodle bowls. Daily specials, which curiously included pad Thai on our visit, adorn a board at the entrance. Along with a sushi bar against the back wall, you'll find a full liquor bar on a perpendicular wall and a trio of elevated booths along the front wall overlooking a sea of tables. Interior design asides aside, my hungry review trio got rolling with an appetizer of gyoza, in this case, steamed dumplings ($4.50; also available fried). Petite and soft with a mild pork filling, these crowd-pleasers were easy to live with, but bulkier or more exotic appetites would do well to explore other starter options, including takati, baby octopus and tempuras. The father-son duo across my table ordered a palette of a la carte sushi, with two pieces each of the crab stick ($3.65), mackerel ($3.65) and white fish ($3.85) rolls. The attractively garnished rolls garnered high praise from my seatmates for their size and freshness. Aside the standard offerings, Zendo's sushi bar rolled out two of their 25 specialty rolls to our table. The Tokyo Roll ($8.95) was a seaweed-wrapped mix of yellowtail, tuna, salmon, whitefish, scallions and fish egg. Never one to deny my love of a spice-induced, tongue-burning sensation, I opted for the Mexican Roll ($6.95), a rice-wrapped number with grouper tempura, tomato, avocado, hot sauce and sesame seed. As you might guess, these rolls lived at opposite ends of the flavor spectrum. Both were fresh and tasty, with the Mexican delivering a nice, heat-filled finish. Dessert options were relatively scant, with just three flavors of ice cream. We tried out the green tea and red bean varieties ($2.25), each served in a martini glass. A dedicated sweet tooth will find slightly more to love from the red bean, but that's not saying much. With a gritty texture not unlike an authentic vanilla bean, that flavor beat out the mild, slightly tart complexion of the green tea. Bar-wise, Zendo offers 14 signature cocktails along with a smallish collection of red, white and house wines, most listed by the glass, and draft and bottled beer. I tried a featured cocktail, the Green Mule ($5.99 during happy hour), ostensibly a blend of Ty Ku Citrus Liqueur, Tito's Vodka, Gosling's Stormy Ginger Beer and lime. My rendition turned up severely lacking the ginger beer, which socked me with a vodka upper cut at first sip. The manager comped me a second cocktail, a mango mojito, which was largely flavorless. Hopefully just an off night behind the bar. Zendo offers larger parties two private dining options, including a separate room that will accommodate up to 15. Lunching types will find special entrees, rolls and combo plates ($8-15) Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. And starting tonight for the late-night set, a DJ will be spinning from 10:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. Bar disappointments notwithstanding, Zendo is a credible feast for the eyes. The stomach won't be far behind. Another hidden gem! This place just opened last Monday, so they're clearly still working out some kinks (I.e., somewhat limited liquor selection: svedka, cruzan, tanquery, tito's, but no Captain, Grey Goose). Service-wise, absolutely outstanding. Food, amazing (see pics). The Happy Hour specials are great, even on a Saturday night. The speciality cocktails (typically $7-8) were $5, and the standard liquor drinks were $3.99. Beer was 2-for-1. They don't have hibachi tables, but they do have hibachi food, along with Katsu, tempura, sushi, etc. Definitely try it!
