Woodys Bar B Q 1638 University Blvd. S Jax Fl. 32216 Cleanliness: 4 Stars The restaurant was clean, but the decor looked, to me, like it needed to be updated. Service: 5 Stars I was greeted when I entered the restaurant. I was then asked if I could be helped. I first looked at a menu, and then I placed my order. I sat at the counter, while my order was being prepared. I was shocked to see the steak that I ordered being cooked on a hot plate, it was like an electric griddle, right behind the counter where I was sitting. Once my steak was cooked, the rest of the order came from inside the kitchen, I paid, and then went home. Food: 1 Star I didn't like the food at all; it was terrible. The steak that I ordered was the toughest piece of meat that I have ever tried to eat! The steak was really nothing more than a huge piece of gristle. I wondered, when I arrived at Woodys around 8:00 p.m. on a Thursday night, why there was only one other car in the parking lot; that should have been my clue, to not stop at this restaurant, and just keep on driving. Conclusion: There is no way that I would ever step foot in this place again, forget about eating here!

I go to this Woody's mostly b/c it is right down the street from where I live. I like their baby back ribs & banana pudding. Some of the best ribs in my area. For the most part they keep the restaurant is clean. They have good customer service. Sometimes the location can be a hassle to get in and out b/c of it's location. There is a lot of traffic on the corner of University Blvd & Atlantic. I mostly get their food to go. They rarely make mistakes.

Went there this past Sunday for their 'new' special, fish 'n chips...got an order to go, came home, opened it and was shockesd to see 3 slender strips of fisah and a hunk of bread and side of lima beans...not a chip to be had. This was for $7.99. One can do a heck of a lot better at Cap'n D's or just about anywhere fish is served.

This is a late review. I ate here back when they ran their groupon deal on 5-17-11. This place is terrible at least the food; the service was so, so. I don't know if Woody's has terrible food in general, but the food at this location was bad. Worst BBQ that I've ever had, and it ended up giving me food poisoning. I will not be coming back here, nor will I probably ever go into a Woody's location again.

I don't understand all the negative reviews for this place. I was looking for some place to deliver to the hotel I'm staying in, and craving some BBQ. The Eat24 app had two places, and while Woody's was rated lower it's selection was much better. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw, and got the add on baby back ribs and beans. I also added bread pudding. It cost me about $38 after taxes, delivery fee, and tip. So it was a little pricey. After a few minutes I got the email that said it would take about 75 minutes for my food to get here (it warns you ahead of time that it could take anywhere from an hour to 2 and a half hours). So that was all good. The food was about 10-15 minutes late, but that doesn't really bother me. Traffic, weather, etc. Doesn't matter. My food was still hot when I opened it, and the delivery guy was very pleasant. I started unpacking my food and my mouth was instantly watering. I could smell the smoky goodness coming from the pork. I dipped into the beans first, and they are absolutely amazing. Nice chunks of smoked pork and even a stewed cherry tomato. I could have eaten a much larger tub of this stuff! Yum! I then started tasting sauces, they gave me three kinds. One was very spicy and kind of mustard like, which isn't what I'm looking for when I want BBQ. Of the other two one was slightly sweet and one was kind of tangy. I used the sweet sauce on top of my Pulled Pork but not before pulling some of the pork off to try it (there had been complaints on here about dry meat). Far from it, it was so tender and succulent, and the smoke level on it was perfect - just a comfortable note to accompany the pork. I also tried a bite of the coleslaw before adding it to the top of my sandwich, but the coleslaw was nothing special. Pretty standard fair - though it wasn't runny or soggy which I do appreciate. The combination was fantastic, nice crisp kick from the cabbage, savory pieces of smokey pork, and a nice sweet kick of BBQ sauce. Needless to say, I scarfed the whole thing down. The baby back ribs came dressed in sauce already, which was different than the two barbecue sauces I'd liked (as far as I could tell) almost like a mix between the two - slightly sweet and slightly tangy. The ribs were so perfectly cooked that the meat was just falling off the bones in delicious smokey chunks. I hope it is as good reheated, because it's going to have to be lunch tomorrow. Lastly we have the bread pudding (which I was very excited for and really craving). I popped open the container and was somewhat disappointed. I didn't get their bread pudding like I had ordered, but rather their banana pudding. I mixed it up and took a bite anyway, and it is delicious. It looks like they use Nilla wafers with a thick whipped cream and the banana pudding. The Nilla wafers soften up nicely against the pudding and it makes for a delicious duo. Even though it wasn't bread pudding, it was still deliciously satisfying. I was a little disappointed to find that the fork/napkin packs did NOT come with wet hand wipes, but really that was my biggest complaint.

Don't bother with this location. Got a baby back rib dinner to go, got home and found a microwaved rack of ribs with about a half a second of grill marks. Drove back to return for a refund (no comp offered) and informed the "good" ribs would be back tomorrow at 4 and that they had run out of the "good" ones. All while 2 people sat waiting for their baby back ribs. From now on i'm going to a different woodys.

I grew up eating Woody's BBQ [it is my dad's favorite, my mom's is Bonos], so I definitely have a soft spot in my heart for Woody's. Aside from the sentimental value, this is really just your average BBQ joint, of which there are plenty in Jacksonville. The meat is always tasty and tender, the sides are nice [I love the fried okra and mac and cheese], and the sauces are varied [something for everyone]. The interior is really pretty nice [not nice fancy, more nice/clean and interesting]. There are shellacked wooden picnic tables and green carpet [an attempt to make it seem like you are eating outside?]. The walls are wooden and it feels cozy and comfortable. The service is really great, with friendly waiters who are very accommodating. I wouldn't go so far as to say this is the best BBQ in Jax, but it's definitely a great option. If you are looking to eat some ribs, give this place a try!

Just left Woody's at Phillips and Baymeadows in Jacksonville. I and an earlier guest waited while two waitstaff concluded their personal conversation with a third guest. I was seated and immediately gave the server my order, half a slab, fries and cole slaw. About 20 minutes later, I nearly walked out. How long does it take to throw ribs, fries and cole slaw on a plate? The server walked up, dropped my plate, said "sorry for the wait" without making any eye contact and left. I had burned the time I had left for lunch so I paid, left an undeserved tip and walked out. I ate 3 or 4 ribs but the sour taste in my mouth killed any appetite I had when I walked in the place. I walked past the 4 servers sitting at a booth rolling silverware and past another at the hostess stand without anyone looking up or saying "have a nice day", let alone asking how my meal had been. There are too many BBQ places in Jacksonville, including a new one being built next to Burger King on Baymeadows, to waste time on slow fast food.

I can't believe so few have rated this place. First off, one must understand that Woody's is a chain and as any chains go, some locations are better than others. That being said, the best one is on Beach Blvd close to 9a. Then the one on San Jose comes a close second. I have been to 3 others (one of which is now closed and they were only okay). Next, the greatest and most unbelievable thing about Woody's is that they have all you can eat though its not on the menu. For 15 bucks you can get as many refills of whatever delicious meat you want. Lastly, I have a firm belief that BBQ has to be smoked for at least 6 hours without ever touching the fire. I believe that some cuts of meat are better than others from every BBQ joint from Lockhart, TX to Lexington, NC. And I believe you cannot rate someones BBQ if you stuff yourself with sides and get a sandwich. That being said, their sliced (not pulled) pork is the greatest of its kind and I will take that to the grave. And the fact that you can get all you can eat just proves that dreams do come true.

Went in for a quick lunch and had the half rack of baby back ribs lunch special. It came with 2 sides. I had collard greens and Mac and cheese. The food was decent, but the servers and cook had bad attitudes and were arguing in front of me and other patrons. I wouldn't go back.

I have ordered from here for years and we would eat there twice a month. I have noticed once a month there would be all new people and new management. As time went by, the food and service went from good to horrible. Last time I was there, 3 days before thanksgiving 2014, I was told that, they were out of fries. What restaurant runs out of fries. I was not offered anything else for substitution for no fries. But this so called manager was not doing his job. He was to worried about going out with his drunk friends that was there eating. My whole order was so messed up. I will not go back there.

I've been eating "q" at this Woodys location on and off since 1984 and have never been disappointed. The service is top notch and the place is always clean. If picnic table sitting is not your thing then check out they're other locations around town that have conventional seating. Oh, and did I mention the food?

I grew up eating Woody's (as well as lots of other local BBQ.) I visited this Woody's for the first time in several years this evening and it is just not worth the money. My order came out wrong in several ways and the overall quality was very poor. The pulled pork and baked beans were near stone cold. The baby backs were swimming in sauce and the "1/4" chicken was the thinnest 1/3 of a breast with a petrified wing attached. It was pathetic. To say the chicken was dry is an understatement. The waitress was friendly, but anything but timely. It took 15 min just to get her attention away from cleaning the cooler and the other waitresses' gossip. The "average" dinner price is $12-$15, add $2.00 for a drink and $2-3 for a tip and you have just blown almost $20 for very subpar BBQ. If you are going to spend at that price lever, do yourself a favor and go to Mojo's BBQ or Outback Steakhouse and get some decent food.

Wait staff is totally incompetent. Terrible service and not so great BBQ. This used to be a pretty good place with nice wait staff. Obviously no one cares now. They deserve to go belly up. Drive a little further and go to Bono's on Beach Blvd.

I've never been to Woody's bbq until now, and I've gotta say it's pritty good. Pros and cons from my experience. Pros- It's a really small friendly restaurant setting and is perfect for family and friends, the employees are nice as well, and the food is good as well, my favorite was the cocoanut cream pie for $3.29, it's a very generous slice and is by far the best pie I've ever had. Cons- I ordered baked beans on the all you can eat chicken for $6.99 special, and the beans were warm instead of hot. I asked the waitress if there were any fresh ones and she replied that we don't have a microwave. Overall asside from that it's a great alternative to Sonny's bbq, and I plan on comming back because the prices are really worth it. Hopefully the will have fresher baked beans in the future at this place, it's a shame because they tasted really good, only better if they were hot.
