I will say we go often because we live close and the food is good. Nothing really special on the menu, but they do the usual items very well. It is not quite as good lately as it was when they first opened. Service has gone down a little, but generally pretty good and pretty fast. Prices have increased some especially on the adult beverages, but you can get a giant Dos Equis..I don't always drink beer, but when I do I want a giant one. Cleanliness at times could be better and on certain nights parking is an issue (very small lot and small spaces). We like the place and the food. You will not leave hungry. Chips and salsa are good. Not all salsa is good, but I like theirs.

Great Mexican food at reasonable prices in a pleasant atmosphere. The service here was prompt and friendly and they brought free chips and salsa to the table while I waited on my main course to arrive which did not take long at all. They had a very steady flow of customers but everyone was taken care just as quickly and professionally. The best part for me was the fact that they give you a 10% discount at checkout when you show them your CCW license.

Stopped here after church for some grub. A little after 9pm. Our waiter was efficient, the chips & queso were yummy and my chimichangas were good. My beans were a little watery though. Unfortunately both of my children said that the meat in their tacos tasted "weird" & they refused to eat anymore. I let our server know & he took their meals off my bill. We will probably give this place another try, maybe around lunch time instead when the food is fresher. It's usually packed.

When I read reviews that include words like "best tasting", "homemade" or "authentic" I'm always going to give the restaurant a shot, especially when it's Mexican. In my opinion this place isn't even close to authentic, I can name three better restaurants right off the top of my head. The only reason I gave them two stars is because they had good customer service. The chips and salsa was the only thing that had any real flavor. The beef nachos came with a single slice of tomatoe, I knew from the presentation alone that I wasn't going to enjoy it. The queso cheese was thin and the meat lacked flavor. The chicken nachos were loaded with dry chicken, that again lacked major flavor and it seems like they put the queso cheese on the bottom of the plate and then the chips on top of the cheese. The fajitas were okay, my boyfriend said he liked it but he doesn't eat Mexican so his opinion on this subject is out. Oh... And their sweet tea tasted like tea water! I believe that there are way better, and more authentic Mexican restaurants in Jacksonville and they reside on the south side/Arlington area. So, if you're up for a little drive I'm sure your tongue will thank you. Happy Yelping...

Edible but NOT good!!! The only positive was the salsa. We usually go to Casa Maria but decided to give Viva a shot. Never, ever again!! Casa Maria isn't the best Mexican I've ever had but far superior to Viva!!!

This is hand-down the best tasting Mexican restaurant on the North side of Jacksonville. It's right off of the Alta exit on 295. Every time I go I get the Special #8. It comes in beef or chicken, I normally choose beef, and topped with spicy red sauce. I normally add queso on top for extra flavor. Fernando makes margaritas that are out of this world! They offer fish-bowl sized frozen margaritas, and they always taste so delicious. Very authentic, and you can really taste the tequila ;-) When I visit Viva's, I normally dine-in, but they do offer take-out as well, which I picked up last night. My order was ready in just 10 minutes, and my queso was still warm when I got home. As long as my queso is made just right, I am happy. And let me tell you, Viva's always makes THE BEST QUESO.

Standard Mexican food. They give discounts for concealed weapons permit holders though! I was expecting a tad more flavor in my Mexican food but it didn't happen here. I'd still return although I can't say something spectacular. Sorry y'all.

We LOVE this family restaurant. Our daughter has Autism and is non-verbal but she requests this at least 3 times a week on her iPad. The staff is awesome and the good is great. It's very family friendly, very clean and fast service!

I've been going to Viva's for several years and this is my first review. Great food, great staff and great drinks. Its like the neighborhood hang out. You may run into your neighbor and end up at the same table. Its Mexican-American food and its good. Always tastes fresh and their tamale's are my favorite! Great job, Viva!

Very Mexican. I love when the Mexican is homemade. No tex mex here. This is as close to Mexico as you are going to get in the states.

Out of all the Mexican restaurants I've been to in Jacksonville, this was the worst one. Jo an I went during the lunch specials. He had some mixed fajitas, nothing really to complain. But they weren't anything special. I order a combo dish that included a chile relleno on it. They used as there cheese extremely cheap white american cheese all over the chile relleno. So as I tried to dig around it. No chile relleno to be found. Just a lil flapped over piece of a bell pepper. We confronted the server, and he insisted that's what a chile relleno is an said we didn't know what we were talking about. Stupid move on his part, seeing which Jo may look white. But he is mexican descent from south Texas, that speaks spanish. Spoke to him in spanish "short version" said this is bullshit that he is trying to lie to us thinking that we wouldn't know what the spanish dish was. Especially since Josiah Ex-family owns the #1 Mexican restaurant in San Antonio,TX an was just listed as the 4th best in the country. ( Mi Tierra). Short end of the story, no tip an we only paid for the fajitas. An don't get me started on the ladies bathroom. This place needs a huge turnaround.

My wife and I ate at Viva about a two months ago 4/2013 and we decided to take our order to go. We should have just left. As for the atmosphere... We wanted to relax and enjoy a meal without being forced to watch the news on every single TV in the restaurant. There really is no escaping it when everywhere you look there is a big screen TV in your field of view. The worst part of it was that it was around the time when the Boston marathon bombing happened. That is the last thing I want to watch when I'm eating Mexican food in a Mexican restaurant. When I asked the hostess to change the channel she gave me a stupid look and made up some lame excuse as to why she had no control over the TV. When I eat at a Mexican restaurant I want to hear Mexican music. As for the food... I ordered a carnitas burrito and my wife ordered a combo plate with chile releno, enchilada, and burrito. When we got home and sat down to eat, we were literally in shock at what was served to us. My burrito had a foul odor emanating from the grease filled slop. I had maybe five little slivers of lettuce that was brown and spoiled throughout the entire burrito, there was no other vegetables to speak of and it was basically a pile of stinky dry pork with melted cheese. My wife dared me to take a bite, and I had to at least taste this burrito before I throw it out. So I did, and I almost vomited immediately. My wife couldn't eat much of her meal and opted to throw it away as well. Her chile releno was beyond disgusting and the rest of the food was literally something that could maybe be passed on as slop for the pigs. She became nauseous as well and we decided to call the restaurant to inform them of what we just experienced. As for the customer service... There was no customer service to speak of. When my wife called to speak with the manager she was told that he was busy and that he would call us back to discuss the meal. Well he never called back. And that is why I am writing this review. I have never written such a bad review before, but after two months passed and having to drive by this pathetic excuse for a Mexican restaurant several times a week I decided to do it. This place deserves negative stars after what we were served. I would recommend La Nopalera for casual dining or Cantina Loredo for a really good experience. The chile releno at Cantina Loredo is outstanding.

The guys at Viva do a nice job with their food. I have eaten here a couple of times before "checking in", and have not been disappointed. It is a good, reliable Mexican restaurant, which is important to have, if you like eating out. The menu is standard Mexican. Good chips and salsa....and they are free.... The parking lot for this restaurant in this strip mall is not very big, so when they get busy, it will be tough to find a spot. It is located just north of 295 at the Alta exit.

Good food, fast service. The specials are value priced. Get the special cheese dip appetizer! A nice selection of tacos, enchiladas, burritos, chalupas, beef, chicken, shrimp, etc. I especially like the light, crisp tacos, not heavy and tough like the ones at Taco Bell. The interior is a big box. The ambiance could be improved, perhaps by partitioning the room and adding intimate lighting. It's also a bit noisey. Go there for the food and you won't be disappointed.

I go to allot of Mexican restaurants with my husband. We decided to go to this place when we went to Jacksonville to scout out places to live. The hotel we were staying in was about 15 minutes away from Viva. When we arrived it was a weekend night, so when we saw the parking lot we almost didn't go inside because of how busy they were. We were seated immediately in what looked like a tiny place that couldn't hold many people to begin with. We ordered the special (chicken chimichanga deal) for 8 bucks a piece. The first thing I must say is WOW! The food was amazing! I have eaten a lot of chimichangas and I would have to say this is the BEST one I have ever had. I am not a lover of Mexican food, but this place just might make me be one from now on. The staff were very nice and fast too. I didn't see any reason not to go to this place. It is worth every penny in our opinion!

I ate here a year ago and if you had asked me then I would have given it 4 or 5 stars but not after tonight. It has gone down hill. I ordered the fajitas which were $17 which would have been ok if they had not been so disgusting. The steak was subpar and reminded me of the steak at a Chinese Delivery place but it least there it is masked in sauce. I don't expect great steak but it shouldn't be gross either. Fajitas are usually cooked with red and green peppers and onions. Mine were cooked with red chunks of tomatoes, green peppers, and those long green onions that are in Chinese Food. Very disappointed and very surprised as I don't think I have ever had terrible Mexican food before :(

My sister and I live down the street from here and bypass this place daily. We are from California San Diego to be exact where they make the best Mexican good. The owner is from California but his restaurant is no where near authentic like the rest of these restaurant claim to be. Cheese sauce is not authentic. We say carne.Adasa.not steak. It was gross we.didnt enjoy it at all. It was dead in there.

Always fast, hot and inexpensive (the way women should be!). Good selection on the lunch menu or order individual items for a change of pace. I also love the fajitas, very tasty. Give it a try!

This place is going down hill. I ordered a beef and bean burrito, it was good. Pretty hard to screw that up, however my fiancé's carnitas were burnt and crunchy. Not very good. She couldn't even finish them. To top it off the waiter didn't seem to care. This place used to be good, but it's losing it's steam.

I tried this place today for lunch because I was in the mood for Mexican food and it was relatively close to my office. Ordered the chicken chimichanga lunch special ($7) to go. It came with a bag of tortilla chips and a little container of salsa, plus rice and beans, sour cream and guac. The staff was friendly and my order came out faster than I expected for a sit down restaurant. The chimi had lots of chicken and everything else was decent Mexican fare. I wasn't blown away mind you, but it hit the spot. If you're in the area, I say give it a try. If you're looking for outstanding authentic Mexican food, go to Los Angeles or San Diego.

We tried this restaurant out as a whim on vacation. All four of us enjoyed what we got. The tacos (both beef and chicken) were excellent, the free chips and salsa were tasty and plentiful and the price was good (about $30 total including a beer). This isn't a "fine" restaurant, but it is great for good, inexpensive and quick Mexican food.

Absolutely love this place! Excellent service and the food never disappoints. I work nearby and go there at least once a week if not more. I live at the beach and if I am wanting Mexican I will make the trip to the Northside before going anywhere else. It's worth every penny plus some!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
