A-MAZ-ING! Go right now and get a Jeff Square! Whoever said that these things are like crack on a cookie, was 100% right! When you go, get a Jeff square warmed up with ice cream on the side. You'll thank me later...don't worry, I'll wait...

I really like the place. You must try the "Jeff Bars" dessert! People come in and play music and sing. The bar in the back is great for a party of friends. I used this are when I had a group of my girlfriends meet there for dinner. I will go again. You should try it.

If you're looking for a quaint, relaxing, cozy spot for some coffee and dessert Three layers is that place. Yeah it is off the beaten path in an atypical location but it is worth me taking the interstate and crossing the bridge to get to. The ambiance is laid back feels like you have been invited into someone's home. The service good and I feel like I could just sit on one of the couches there for a few hours passing time with friends but I was on a mission and came for 1 reason: JEFF SQUARE I don't know exactly what it is (Mark B says Blondie, I say Addiction square) but that has to be one of the best dessert I've had in a while. It is eerie how they get it to be crunchy, sweet and moist at the same time. Believe the hype on this one. Oh yeah Bugsy is cool too. Great food, comfy spot. Jeff Squares. Enough said

Nice place but kind of a strange location. Parking is strictly off street but there was plenty of room. I had no difficulty finding a spot. Note that they DO NOT take American Express. It's a quaint place with lots of delicious desserts. They do have a great orange moscato wine that was wonderful. My friend ordered pizza. It was good but not exceptional. The staff is awesome but understand they don't do table service in the zen garden. The garden is nice but it looked like it needed some attention. It is just the beginnings of summer so maybe there are plans in the works. The bunny in the garden is a nice touch and awfully sweet. The inside bar is very nice and for a small place, had a good wine selection. The prices are very reasonable. I gave it 4 stars but really wanted to do 3.5. Honestly, I bumped it up to 4 because I think it's a great place, just not a place I would regularly visit. It's more a personal feeling and I wanted to be objective so bumped it up.

This is a great little spot that tucked away, but worth the journey to find. It is a coffee bar with a twist. They even have a small wine bar in the back, and a patio that is perfect for clear summer nights (or days). Drinks are great, atmosphere is a nicer version of Starbucks (complete with wifi), and is exactly what you expect from a locally-owned (and hip) spot. This is a great, local coffee shop that will definitely get my business when I am in the area.

I used to LOVE this place. It's really gone down hill. I ordered cake and a drink. Drink wasn't correct. Bathrooms were dirty. Had to try out several different tables and chairs before I found one that wasn't wobbly. One chair I sat in I actually don't know what was holding it together. It certainly wasn't the tattered and torn cushion on top. I will say this... The staff is better than some. And the cake... Well it certainly was yummy.

Clean place, tasty coffee, laid back, lots of comfy chairs. Not quite downtown but that's cool.

This place is really adorable if you happen to be in the Springfield area. It's a total hipster-centric establishment with really friendly service and a plethora of offerings. I stopped in just for a latte and it was very good. They offer raw brown sugar as one of their sweetener options and have a good selection of baked desserts. They also have lunch plates which looked healthy and appetizing. The Zen garden in the back is the place to be with a very cool rabbit that you can visit while enjoying your noshes surrounded by bamboo trees. The also have seating outside at the front entrance if you want to enjoy your nibbles, beverages and a smoke. Overall, I enjoyed my first experience. They have drink specials on certain nights and the atmosphere is very chill. If I actually lived in the neighborhood, it would probably be one of my regular spots. It's definitely a place to check out for sure. :)

Found out this place through Yelp & Instagram. Looked online at their cake menu, saw that they had German Chocolate Cake. I love German Chocolate Cake! So I decided to venture out on a beautiful Saturday. The cafe is really pretty inside and out. I love the old brick style restaurants. While waiting on my order I walked around and noticed they have a zen garden which allows you to eat outside. It is a very beautiful area. I like how the kitchen looks. It gives you that home style hanging around in your mothers kitchen feel. Any given day the cakes they have can change. They didn't have German Chocolate Cake when I went in, so I ordered a slice of Chocolate Peanut Butter, Red Velvet and Pound Cake. All three were very very good. I try not to go to crazy with sweets, but this place my just ruin that for me. I haven't tried many different cake places, but I really did like the Red Velvet & Pound Cake. Growing up, I was always a big fan of my grandmas pound cake. Three Layers came pretty close. The chocolate peanut butter, was just a tad too much peanut butter for me, but still good. I will be back to try some German Chocolate. They have wifi with enough tables and couches for you to relax and catch up on homework or browse the internet. It's nice & quiet place in a nice and quiet neighborhood. You can't go wrong!

Love this cute little coffee shop! You instantly feel right at home. The coffee is great and they have a resident bunny in the garden in the back! My only complaint with this place is the location. It's in the middle of nowhere and a little sketchy. On top of that, the parking situation is pretty bad. However, if I'm downtown, I'll definitely take a detour and stop by again.

I went here for a get together. It's small and quaint. I was very irritated with the wait staff. She did acknowledge me when I sat down at the bar, but it would have been nice to know before I sat down that I would have to get up... And go to the register to order...then hope no one sits in my spot so I can sit down again once I ordered. I sat for about 15 minutes, looking for and then at the waitress who was at the register glancing at me, before i was told to go to the register to order. It killed my whole mood that night and I soon left after I had a blue berry muffin. I don't even remember if the muffin was good.

Despite one reviewer calling the location sketchy, I love this place. It is located in a transitional neighborhood and it's an urban area. So if the suburbs and Starbucks are your preferred hangout, this is not your scene. It's a coffeehouse in the best sense. It's located in a community and hosts spoken word, open mic night, local art and even yoga. Wine tastings on certain Tuesdays and live music often. It was awesome when it first opened around 6-7 years ago and it's still a great hangout for the neighbors, explorers, coffee lovers and those with a sweet tooth. Bugsy will try to sweet talk you into getting some of your chips. Make sure to remind him it's bad for bunnies.

I really appreciate a place like this in Springfield. Three Layers was a cozy, warm and welcoming place in a side of town that probably doesn't get the credit it deserves. I enjoyed a glass of wine with my wife and some good music from a local artist we know. Looking forward to more growth and restoration in the Springfield area.

I knew I'd be off the mark, in terms of consensus, on Three Layers. I figured that, if the magazine handed out at JAX gave them a plug as something worthwhile to see in Springfield, an older neighborhood immediately north of downtown, it would be good. What I ate was good. The atmosphere inside, with its exposed brick walls, comfortable chairs, and books, is also good and it sits in an area of Jacksonville that has a lot of personality and is making a comeback. The lady is friendly and takes a lot of pride in her work. So, thus far, we are at 4 stars. Three Layers wasn't full and yet there was sort of a frenzied pace behind the counter and some fumbling with running my tab. I didn't understand why this was the case. Also, I think that things are just a hair overpriced. I also looked at lunch entrees on adjacent tables and matched them up to the prices on the menu, for quantity and reasonableness, and am not sure I'd be a regular lunch customer. But, when it comes to desserts and tea, hot or iced, Three Layers is indeed a good place. So, then, I'm at 3 stars, which still means "A-ok." Then, I scan the pictures and see there was a garden in the back as well as a rabbit, or rabbits, that rub elbows with the customers. Now, that's novel. Had I seen that, it might have evoked more sentiments and pushed their rating up to a 4 stars, but I didn't. I think that Three Layers in the Springfield neighborhood is a good place and one generally gets a good feeling from patronizing a business that is part of a renaissance in an area that is making strides forward.

Great vibe! We took the entire family to hang out while we waited to look at a house in the area. We got cake, ice cream, coffee & chai tea. Everything was very good & affordable. This will be a new go to spot.

This awesome little Coffee shop is off the beaten path, but well worth the search. This place is actually located in the middle of a neighborhood in what appears to be a renovated Frat House, that now cranks out some truly epic Coffee!

This little cafe is cozy and chill. As I walk in I am greeted with a warm smile and amazing aromas. I have already looked online so that I know of the pick 3 lunch and order the chicken salad on toasted crossiant, tomato basil soup and half-n-half tea. When asked would I like anything else is when I was made aware of their pumpkin dessert. I add a pumpkin square with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and then pay. After a brief time my lunch arrives and I bite into an amazing gourmet chicken sandwich containing grapes & walnuts. The tomato basil soup cools while I polish off my sandwich and began to enjoy the soup. Both are of very good quality and decent portions. Nothing prepared me for the slice of heaven that was served next. The warmed pumpkin square with a side of ice cream in a small bowl. That was so frickin amazing that I lost my mind for a moment. Great atmosphere, great service, reasonable prices and really good food! This place has conquered lunch in a awesome way.

This place is relaxing. The staff are very friendly. I grabbed coffee from here yesterday morning and lunch today. Simple but good food. I had a chicken salad croissant and a cup of tomato basil soup. I first visited this place about 2 years ago. I'm glad too see it still in business. They have a Zen Garden and wine bar too. I didn't venture out because it's getting hot outside.

A swing & a miss tonight! It started Ok but the service speed is abysmal. The set up is nice & the live music was a nice touch but taking over 30+ min just to get an almost $8 small glass of wine is utterly ridiculous. A snack size paninni, a cup of soup, 1 Jeff square & a small glass of muscato was nearly $22 & served in stages over 30+ min & still didn't get water requested. I've been here before in the afternoon & thought it had promise. It does have promise but missed the mark tonight. Still recommended as a place to try but be aware of these issues.

This place is cute and good to get some work done if that's what you're looking for in a coffee shop. The desserts are yum and rich and the coffee is horribly disappointing. So I still come back when I want to post up somewhere and work but not when I'm craving a delicious coffee.

The barista was so rude to my friend that I will never go back. I was treated with ambivalence, but when my friend arrived he was treated very differently. Maybe it was because he was in work clothes (he's a chef), maybe it was because he rode up on a bike (he's an energetic health nut), but he was given an attitude that I, nor the other customers, did not see. I honestly feel terrible for bringing him there. She definitely drove me off for good and made his first visit his last.

We just love this place. We too our granddaughter here tonight for desert. We played jenga and shared both versions of Jeff squares, regular and chocolate raspberry, cheesecake and strawberry layer cakes. What a lovely evening. The zen garden either bunnies she really enjoyed. The deserts didn't disappoint on any levels. Yum yummy and yummiest!

I had heard a lot of buzz about Three Layers but I had never ventured over to find it. After dinner at Sumo Sushi, I was in the mood for a little something sweet so I took my nephew on an adventure to find out what Three Layers was all about. While it was quite late into our evening, we did not benefit from the large walls of windows that I'm sure let plenty of light in during the day. It had a classic coffeehouse feel to it. Or what I expect when I think of a 'classic coffeehouse'. We were pleasantly greeted by the barista behind the counter as he patiently waited for us to wipe our drool from our chins as we stared at the display case. My husband ordered a coffee and a piece of the Cinnamon Pecan coffee cake. My nephew ordered a four berry smoothie and I decided on a chai latte and I couldn't resist trying a Jeff Square. When he asked if I wanted it warm with vanilla ice cream, I couldn't say Yes! fast enough. We found an area to park and wait for our sweet treats. I don't really know how to describe the Jeff Square. It's like so many things rolled into one. If I had to pick something it resembled, I would say maybe a Blondie, but it's sooo much better. I didn't try my husbands cake, but I did have a piece the next morning for breakfast. They had forgotten to bring his coffee cake to him and when they finally did, they offered him a piece to take home as an 'apology'. Best. Barista. Ever. Three Layers gave me one more reason to fall in love that side of Jacksonville but hate that I live at an inconvenient distance.

Haven't been here in a while, but I absolutely loved the atmosphere. Very warm and inviting, staff was very nice. Loved that there were different seating options and even a little bar area in the back with wine. Very nice place to relax with friends. Coffees and desserts were very good too! Hope to go visit again soon :)

Great coffee shop! Tasty and affordable food combinations and cozy ambience... Perfect place to eat, study, meet friends or read a book- not too loud, open until (relatively) late and plenty of convenient parking available on the street.. I highly recommend it.

Ok so despite having a handful of bad experiences here in terms of service, their chai tea latte kept me coming back and thankfully their service has improved tremendously. Maybe management changed or they read their reviews? In any case, I'm happy to recommend them again. Seriously though, I've tried the chai latte at pretty much every place in town but there's none like theirs. It's like liquid crack. And the Jeff's Squares are fantastic if you're a sugar fiend.

As I live a few blocks from Three Layers, I'm a little biased; how could I not love one of the few cozy places to hang out in Springfield? First and foremost: free WiFi and a bunny out back! If you catch the servers at the right time or have enough eager crazy in your eyes, they'll even let you feed the bunny! Generally not many people are out back- I don't find myself going back there because of ants. Coffee: hit and miss, depending on the barista. I"ve had lovely cappuccinos and terrible watery/milky lattes. Snacks: I love all of the choices of spread for bagels, the muffins are solid. But you come to Three Layers for dessert. We've had the most lovely cakes, bars and the signature Jeff Square here. Don't ever get rid of your baker! Ambiance: I love the seating, tall tables, big couches, electrical outlets, etc. The bathrooms are memorable. Could use some better "art". I also love that they have a bike rack! There are also board games, a quiet TV and music playing as well.

Delicious vanilla chai tea latte. The choc cake was moist and subtle. The Jeff's square was like a kick to your mouth of diabetic death deliciousness. It was nice to sit in the zen garden w the bunnies. I will def come back.

"Welcome to Three Layers" greets everyone who walks in. My friends are I were in the mood for something sweet and stumbled upon Three Layers. I ordered the chocolate buttercream cake and fell in love. It was warm and so soft; it doesn't get better than that. The cafe is decked out with a bar called "the cellar" and a zen garden out back (It has two pet bunnies!). It's very quaint and comfortable and we really enjoyed ourself. The staff is so nice as well. I will definitely be back to try their extensive list of coffee drinks and pastries.

When I think of Springfield Three Layers is a place I think of. It's a cozy atmosphere with an at home feel. I'm sure you'll read it on here but the unique thing about this place is the Zen Garden where you can find a bunny. My only complaints is your drinks, ha! Oh no. It's not that they're bad I just feel like I shouldn't be paying so much for a chai that I know is the brand, Big Train. Don't get me wrong, I love the taste of it but I know that it's not that expensive to buy so I'm curious to why I'm getting charged so much. I also am curious to a lot of their food. Do they make it in house or is it something I can personally go get from Costco? I'll ask next time I'm in! I'll be going back and if I know of someone going to the Springfield area, I'll for sure tell them to go here too!

The interior is very inviting and relaxing and the garden in the back is very peaceful and has a bunny. Unfortunately the food wasn't really worth the price. Tried the cheese panini and the coffee cake. The coffee cake was definitely microwaved and the cheese panini was very average and lacked personality.

    (3)
  • Michelle F.

Liked this place at first but they don't seem to care for their live rabbits. One lady threw one off the table and the other laughed when I asked where the second rabbit was. Also it's pricey. 10 dollars for a cheese panini that tasted like a fridge

    (1)
  • Kara P.

Absolutely adorable decor. It's like being in your mothers kitchen. I loved how there is a comfy couch to sit on and eat soup or cake and sip chai lates. The bunnies out around back simply add to the home feel. The caramel buttercream cake bites I order were scrumptious and the chocolate buttercream cake my friend ordered was short from sinful. My only critique is that the frosting tasted my like a fudge icing than a true buttercream but either way this slice of cake was delicious. Definitely come back in the morning for a bagel and chai latte or herbal tea. The pecan coffee cake looks tempting as well.

I've been here multiple times for drinks (coffee and wine) and dessert. This is the kind of place that you want to like. The atmosphere is laidback yet trendy. Unfortunately, the service is horrible and coffee is average. Their only saving grace is their desserts. They are good, so good that I ordered a cake from them for father's birthday. I checked their website for pricing and called to place my order BUT they wanted payment at time of order. Hmm, not normal but not a big deal. I go in the next day to order and I felt like they were completely taking advantage of me. First they couldn't accommodate the size of the cake that I wanted because that particular cake has to be bigger. Then that particular cake is an extra $10! Are you freaking kidding me?! So they compromised and gave me the smaller cake I wanted for the price of the bigger cake! No where on their website or menu in store does it mention these fees. The only reason I didn't take my money elsewhere was because it was for my dad and I was running out of time quickly. So I paid the extra money to get his favorite cake. My dad loved the cake even though the frosting was falling apart and I had to fix the sides of the cake myself before the party. I won't be going back.

This place is so cozy. The coffee is delicious and the kitchen, which is visible to the main seating area, looks like something off a Food Network show. I'm glad there's a spot like this in Springfield. The garden out back, home to Bugsy the bunny, is a nice spot to visit mid-day if you just need to gather yourself for a minute. I've taken refuge there more than once. You can come here and study or work and it's a nice vibe for that, or you can come to visit with a friend and feel just like you're in someone's living room. I've never been here at night but I imagine it being really jazzy and cool.

A hidden gem. I only went for coffee in the afternoon but the drink I had was fabulous and the shop was a little oasis. There is a lot of seating, tables outside, tables inside, a couch area, a patio out back, and a little bar in the back. Love this place.

Liked this place at first but they don't seem to care for their live rabbits. One lady threw one off the table and the other laughed when I asked where the second rabbit was. Also it's pricey. 10 dollars for a cheese panini that tasted like a fridge

A hidden gem. I only went for coffee in the afternoon but the drink I had was fabulous and the shop was a little oasis. There is a lot of seating, tables outside, tables inside, a couch area, a patio out back, and a little bar in the back. Love this place.

The interior is very inviting and relaxing and the garden in the back is very peaceful and has a bunny. Unfortunately the food wasn't really worth the price. Tried the cheese panini and the coffee cake. The coffee cake was definitely microwaved and the cheese panini was very average and lacked personality.

A-MAZ-ING! Go right now and get a Jeff Square! Whoever said that these things are like crack on a cookie, was 100% right! When you go, get a Jeff square warmed up with ice cream on the side. You'll thank me later...don't worry, I'll wait...

People love Springfield or hate it, but places like Three Layers make it feel like a genuine neighborhood. It's got a cool and quiet vibe with good coffee and good food. Also, there's wine -- what else do you need? The service can be a little slow, but this is not a venue for hipsters on the go. Take it easy and soak up the ambience. A few more places like this, and Riverside might start to worry. UPDATE: After a half-dozen visits there, I'd strongly suggest that Three Layers review its menu, and its sandwich presentation. The first is starting to seem pretty limited; the second is just a quality control issue: four chunks of toast and a small dish of chicken salad do not add up to a chicken salad sandwich. Also, the ordering still seems kind of awkward, with the high counter and support beam serving as way too much of a barrier.

Love me some Three Layers. When my husband and I first walked in we were instantly taken back to some of the cool coffee shops we fell in love with on our annual vacations to the mountains. The inside decor is gorgeous, warm, and inviting. The desserts are oh-my-gawd yummy. My only complaint is they like to put EVERY single dessert in the microwave to "bring it to room temperature" without asking if you want it heated up or not. Sorry, but this does not "bring it to room temperature." This warms it up and causes the icing to slide off the cake into an oily heap. No thank you. But I've learned to stop them in their tracks. Problem solved. They also have a lovely outdoor patio with fountains, a little bridge, and a bunny named Bugsy that hops around and tries to sneak inside anytime the door opens. Delicious cake and a cute bunny. I'm in heaven.

Three layers is a very cute, cozy, and warm Restaurant. My first visit could have gone a little bit better. But I am really wanting to try this place again. When my husband and I arrived, we noticed that almost all of the tables inside were dirty. I tried to go sit at the bar, but it was filled with dirty dishes as well. It looked as if there was only one person working. She was in the middle of taking an order, so we looked around. When we were finally acknowledged, I ordered a slice of the black and white cake and my husband ordered the last slice of red velvet cake. She told us that there were three orders in front of us and that there was going to be a little bit of a wait. Boy was she right!! We ended up waiting about 15 to 20 minutes for two slices of cake. My husband and I took a look around the establishment. The garden out back is very calm and beautiful. I really enjoyed the ambiance of the entire place. The black and white cake was pretty good. That red velvet cake, on the other hand wasn't yummy at all. That last slice of red velvet should have been thrown away, it was very stale. My husband and I plan on returning to the three layers pretty soon. I hope that next time it will be a little bit cleaner. This place really deserves 4 stars. Hopefully those dirty dishes won't be there next time.

Wow, this place is really cool. I forgot I was in Jacksonville and thought I woke up in Charleston or Savannah. This is a hidden gem that only the Spring-fielders get to enjoy. They have a great outside seating area, a cool cellar bar for beer and wine and a comfortable seating area to enjoy games and coffee. As R.G. wrote, it's worth going out of your way to hang out here. I will be back soon to support this local business! Desserts all look awesome and I can't wait to try them all. The chocolate chip cookie was very good and they warmed it up, causing the chocolate chips to melt all over your fingers giving you a reason to lick them clean! Make sure you go out back to pet the rabbit.

I really liked this place for lunch, although, it is conveniently located next to nothing. Good lunch food for a reasonable price, but not cheap. The staff is very friendly, the food came out fast, but they were a little slow once the place got more than four customers. Will definitely go back, and would love one near Town Center, or at the beach.

The first time I visited, I grabbed a coffee here with a friend and was impressed. Tasteful decor, quiet zen garden out back complete with a bunny, and big screen tv in the front room=something for everyone... Some friends even told me they host an open mic night or something in the evenings. I have never gone in the evening, but have been a couple times during the day but have not seen it packed (not that I'm complaining). I've been eyeing a few desserts there, so I'm going to have to get back there sooner rather then later...

Once again, Yelp comes through in a big way! I had given up on finding anything in Jacksonville worth checking out (sorry locals), when I used the Yelp app to find a local coffee shop. There were a few listed in downtown, but because of the reviews this one seemed like the best option. At first my husband and I were concerned that we'd made the wrong decision given the neighborhood it's in, but as soon as we walked inside our concerns were put at ease. This place really is a hidden gem! It feels like you're stepping into someone's home when you first walk in. The coffee shop part is very open and welcoming. We ordered our coffees and the highly recommended Jeff Squares (and rightly so) and sat down at the bar to enjoy the atmosphere. We then made our way to the zen garden to hang out with the resident bunny, Bugsy. It is so gorgeous back there! We really felt like we hit the jackpot by trying this place out. In fact, we loved it so much we brought our friends later to grab some drinks in the bar and hang out in the zen garden. Everyone agreed that this was the best part of our trip to Jacksonville.

The atmosphere, food/drink and location get 5 starts but unfortunately, EVERY time I go in, the lady at the register is extremely unfriendly, I've worked in customer service for many years and it's the key to any successful business, especially when she is the face of the cafe, so for such a charming place it's too bad. I used to go a lot to study/ drink coffee and enjoy the delicious desserts but she was so unpleasant one time I said I'd never go back, but if you've been, you know that's hard to stick to because it's adorable and relaxing so I thought I'd take my husband today and he was equally disappointed. On a smaller note, the back courtyard could use some freshening up, leaves swept off patio etc.

I surprised my dad with this gem tucked away in the neighborhood. He thought I had taken him the wrong way. Haha. I got an email about Jeff Squares and don't say advertising doesn't work because it did a number on me. I found myself in Three Layers the very next day! My dad really liked the Jeff Squares. He said it tastes like pecan tarts, but with a creamier taste. My son, however, wasn't pleased. Ah, well, you can't please everyone. You can order a dozen Jeff Squares, but the price was out of my range. Darnit. I was intending to take my son to see the cute bunny Bugsy and the little garden at the back, but we all forgot... My poor son was sad.. Next time, though. I had been at Three Layers a few months back during the evening. It had grown a lot since the last review. As I mentioned already, there is a little garden in the back, but they also have a room that's more like a bar. Oh I get it -- Three Layers: Coffeehouse, Bar, Garden. Hahaha funny!

I've been to Three Layers several times but only for coffee and dessert. And they do both of these things very well. The staff is friendly and typically one of the two owners are present. The atmosphere is adorable. There's not much like this (unfortunately) in Jacksonville. It's homey, and comfortable. There are big windows up front, a beer garden out back, and couches and chairs with fun books and a flat screen TV, along with seating at a bar area. I love the peanut butter cookie and Jeff's Squares. The carrot cake is good too but if you've never been, get a PB cookie or Jeff's Square. You may be in a sugar coma post-treat, but it's totally worth it! Great place to hang out, read a book, peruse the internet on your laptop or bring your headphones.

I live in Austin, but I love love love the Jeff's Squares cake sold here. When my fiance travels back and forth from Jax to here, I make him buy me Jeff's squares and bring them back. I've only been to the place once, it's an amazing place, but most importantly, the desserts are ridiculously good. Just wish Three Layers could open shop where I live!

This place is just homey, light and airy and wrapped up into a cute package. I mean it like sitting at Mom's Kitchen table. Heck look at the pictures of the kitchen I'm bellied up to the bar. It looks like my old kitchen. This is a old building that has been retro fitted to be a restaurant/ bakery and a coffee house all in one. The desserts look amazing and Jeff's Squares are a most have. They are like Crack and I'm not talking the stuff you can buy 2 blocks down but the Crack Pie that you can buy at a nice little restaurant in NYC called Momofuku's Milk Bar. On this trip I had the Cuban Panini that was very good. Just the right amount of meat and cheese and pressed to a fine crisp. I also had a pasta salad that was I don't know just right. I like pasta salad and all but this stuff had the right this an that. It wasn't overpowered by the olive like most pasta salads are. I enjoyed it and I don't like olive. I think this place could very easily become a hang out for me and the wife. Just a get away from it all.

What a wonderful surprise this place is! My oldest son is in Army boot camp right now and his girlfriend turned 18 today, so I wanted to take her someplace grownup, hip, casual, & fun and decided to take a chance on Three Layers. Both of us are so glad we did! There weren't many people there when we arrived, so we got to have a good look around. There are tables and chairs (taller than normal, but not bar stool height) along with 2 nooks with upholstered chairs and a couch. It was lovely inside, with a modern and funky vintage feel to it. It was open mike night and we enjoyed listening to the different guys on guitars - as soon as someone started playing, the place filled up fast. We came in the evening and both had frappes to drink; I had a buttercream caramel cake slice and she had a slice of strawberry cheesecake. Both the drinks and the desserts were obscenely decadent. I cannot wait to go back in the daytime to try lunch and explore the zen garden out back. BTW, I do want to mention that this could be a great place for families, if the kids were well behaved. My youngest is 11 but she is mature enough to really enjoy the adult ambiance and music. Children who are rambunctious or have short attention spans might not be comfortable here.

LOVE it here. The courtyard alone is worth the drive- the little bunnies will sneak your food if your not careful, and will let you pet them:-) The staff is amazing and friendly, food is reasonably priced, drinks are very good. This is the only place in Jacksonville that I've found so far that has a real coffee house feel- where you could hole up with a book by a fire with a chai and read for an hour in a big cozy chair.

Very cute and quaint little coffee house that I found through yelp. There really isn't many options as gas coffee around the hospital and this was the closest option available. It sometimes, very woefully, feels like the days of the quintessential neighborhood coffee shop are slipping away from us. First Fuel closed in Riverside. Then Uncommon Grounds in San Marco. And since I thrive in a tiny radius in the center of Jacksonville [the San Marco/Riverside/Downtown trifecta] for the majority of the time, by choice [because it is the best], there went two of my trusty spots. I love a good pub, a good beer, a good place to hang. But sometimes you want something more low key. Some place with couches where you can chill, read a book with some cappuccino, have a nice conversation with a friend or a stranger, eat a piece of pie, stare blankly at the wall... whatever you please! And coffee shops are the perfect place for such behaviors. And then, voila', Three Layers opened up! This place is A-MAY-ZING. It has everything you could want in a coffee shop. The front room boasts a cafe to purchase your coffee at, leather sofas, nice lamps that provide the appropriate tone of lighting for reading, coffee tables to rest said coffee, a little area for live music, and a bar for eating your sandwich or pie. It's clean, modern, and functional, but still extremely cozy. Then, if you venture just a little further into the joint you will find their tap room. It's dark and rich and a little more serious, a little more adult. They have a few high top tables, a beautiful granite bar to order a cold brewskie or a nice glass of wine [they have a great selection of both], and some awesome local art [like Overstreet Ducasse - love him!]. Around the back to the outside, after passing through halls filled with more great local art, you will meet the zen garden. It is a beautiful, calm, comfortable place to sit and relax. At times, it is hard to believe you are deeply immersed in the Springfield neighborhood... notorious these days for its gentrification, or revitalization, as others might put it. But Springfield is not so scruffy as people will have you believe. It is a beautiful neighborhood with a lot of great spots to enjoy [Three Layers, Fusion, Uptown Market, Shantytown... OK Shantytown is a little scruffy, but in a charming way]. I highly recommend this place to everyone. It is chic and charming and ahead of the times [for Jacksonville]. So many places are in that ahead-of-the-times category these days that I might just have to change what times we are in, mentally. Jacksonville is coming up! And Three Layers is one of the many places doing the tugging.

I dropped by Three Layers last night for the first time. The cafe has a sort of urban rustic feel with brick walls and exposed ceilings, and a small garden with a BUNNY! I really liked the atmosphere of the place and appreciate the fact that they are fully stocked with board games and local magazines. I had the strawberry cake accompanied by a cappuccino and was very happy with both. The strawberry cake was definitely fresh (loved the little bits of strawberry I found throughout the cake) - can't wait to come back and try out some of their lunch items.

It was a long journey to one star. As i was once a fairly enthusiastic fan. it seems they go out of their way to make their regulars feel entirely unwelcome. I went here for lunch, since I was already in downtown for business. I had been planning to go to Three Layers after sampling their "Jeff Squares" in January. I ordered the turkey panini, which was really different, since they used a berry spread on it. I also had a full serving of a "Jeff Square", which was delicious!!! The "Jeff Square" seems like it maybe a Dream Bar that has been modified. I'm trying to concoct a recipe that is similar to it. It also has a cozy wine/beer room and a peaceful zen garden.

For a coffee shop in Jacksonville, this place is as good as it gets. I was so happy when I found it (thanks to the other yelpers). I often work at coffee shops during the day and I drive 15 miles out of my way to come here because I like it so much. Pros: -Very nice, warm, relaxing atmosphere -Reasonable prices -Good desserts (I really enjoyed the key lime pie and brownie) -Good coffee (I've only had the regular but I like it) -For having a smallish menu, it has several healthy, flavorful options -Decent wine selection -Quiet little outside patio/backyard area with several tables for those who want to eat outside, have a smoke, or just hang out with the resident bunny Cons: -The only thing I could think of, and this is a stretch, is that sometimes they have live performers there that aren't very good...but even when that happens, they have the wine bar area that is still secluded enough or the outdoor patio

Five stars for the atmosphere. Food/drink are good too, but I keep coming back for the ambience.

What a gem! After a "touristy" day, we found this absolute gem of a neighborhood cafe and wine bar tucked away in a totally cool area. Service was incredible, coffee was delicious, and the ambiance was perfect. Loved the Zen garden and resident bunny. Finding this place made our day.

Nice, comfortable setting to sit and have an ice coffee. Not many of these in Jax so it was a nice find. More like being in your friend's kitchen/living room than a cafe.

It had been about 2 years or so since I had been here, but it must have gone downhill since then or something. I was pretty disappointed. I hope the management steps up their game and improves things. First, I ordered an iced coffee, and asked for it to be sweetened. Most places will sweeten it for you, but she said that she would just leave room for me to sweeten it. No problem. So I go over to the sugar station, and there's no simple syrup. If you've ever tried to dissolve Sugar in the Raw into iced coffee, it just doesn't work without 30 minutes of loud ice-banging-against-the-glass stirring. So I asked the barista again if there was simple syrup behind the counter, and she said no! Like not even the pump sweetener kind. I have never heard of a coffee shop operating without simple syrup. So she comes up with an idea, where I give her a small plastic cup from the sugar station, and she pours hot water into it from the espresso machine, then suggests I dissolve sugar into that, then pour that into my coffee. It worked, but wasteful of the cup and very much a pain. (To compare: Bold Bean has a simple syrup bottle right where you pick up your coffee for ease of access, Lillie's at the beach has it on the sugar station.) But that alone would have knocked off just one star. I love the building and the environment so it was a good experience thus far. But then we wanted a snack and I wanted a beer and my wife a glass of wine. So I go over to the cellar area to order the alcoholic drinks, and I see what looked to be a very nice menu of food offerings. I picked chips and queso, and caprese salad. He informed me that they were out of queso, and that they could do chips and salsa instead. No problem there. But for chips and salsa and caprese salad, it took 20-30 minutes to come out! I didn't clock my watch the entire time so I'm not sure of the exact time, but I do know that after 5 minutes we were wondering and I took note of the time. Chips and salsa is easily a maximum 5 minute dish to prepare, depending on if the salsa is made fresh or not. Caprese salad is cheese, tomato, basil, and balsamic -- again max 5 minutes if you're cutting everything. And they were not busy at all, with maybe 6-8 people other than us in the entire place. So waiting that long for cold items that required no cooking and only quick preparation was a little frustrating. Minus one star. But to really top if off, once we did get the chips and salsa and caprese salad, the chips were very underwhelming, and the mozzarella in the caprese seemed like Publix-brand block mozzarella. It definitely was not the type of mozzarella you use on caprese. Then again, I did only pay about $5 for each dish, but I would rather pay $8 or $10 each and get quality offerings than the blah offerings I did receive. Again, none of those things on their own would make this any less than a 4 star review. The place is great for the neighborhood, and the environment is awesome. But all together we had a really bad experience, and it will be a while before I go there again when there are so many better options for coffee and for drinks and lite fare.

Who likes coffee? Of course I do. Now, while there are a ton of Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts around, sometimes you just want something more local. Something with a little personal touch. I often try to stay local when I can and this is a great option. Go to jaxfoodcritic.com to check out my video and pictures of Threelayers along with my other reviews. Let me just say this....Jeff Squares! You have to try these, they are their signature dish and everyone talks about them. If you read the other reviews posted on Urbanspoon.com you will see almost all of them mention the Jeff Squares. I like mine heated with a scoop of ice cream. I don't know what exactly he puts in them but they are very addictive. They have several types of cakes to choose from, cookies and other sweet treats too. If you are looking for something non sugar infused, try their lunch menu which consists of pasta salads, tuna salads, greek salad and panini's. I always get the iced coffee and a bagel, I'm kind of old school that way. If you get the iced coffee and stay there, you get a free refill which is unusual so that is a plus! Extra: One of the neat things about this place is the Zen Garden out back and as you can see, they have a bunny that just hops around freely. His name is Bugsy and he is extremely friendly. They also have a meeting room you can reserve, I'm not sure if there is a fee to use it. I would just call ahead and ask. Besides the seating out back, they have outside seating up front too and that is neat because if you like people watching, Historic Springfield is the place to do it. You never know what you will see from minute to minute. Oh and before I forget, make sure you check out The Cellar connected to Threelayers if you want a glass of wine or a local beer, it's a nice little bar tucked away in the back. The Good -Nice atmosphere -Lots of food and drink options -Unique feel (not cookie cutter) -Free wi-fi The Bad -They don't open until 10am? (don't understand that) -A little on the pricey side

Just visited Saturday night and was excited to see a place like this exists in Jacksonville. I'm anxious to go back and check out the events like open mic night and some of the live music sessions. They've got a coffee and dessert bar as well as wine and beer in the back. Just wish they were open later than 11pm.
