I'm not sure why this place doesn't have hundreds of reviews. Business brings me to JAX several times a year. I've been making it a point to eat at the Southern Grill every visit for the last 4 years. Like their portions, the menu is giant. Their Mediterranean choices are excellent, but I'd describe the menu as Southern before I'd call this place Mediterranean. I've had sandwiches (warm and cold), red beans and rice with fresh made cornbread, tabbouleh and hummus, BBQ, meatloaf...the list goes on. I've never had a bad fork (or fist) full of food. And the best part is they're cheap!!! Get here early cause they're only open for breakfast and lunch and they fill up quickly.

This is by far the worst meal we've had in Jax ever. Went last week for lunch; turkey platter was poor quality meat, green beans out of a can (seriously) and Mac&cheez was ice cold. Don't eat here.

Very tasty BBQ, smoky and a choice of three sauces at the table. Salads are huge. Good lunch value for the area, get there early for lunch as it fills up quick. A shame they don't do dinner.

Great spot for lunch. I work within walking distance so this is a favorite of the office! I've never been disappointed. I've had anything from pork sliders to giant salads and everything is made to order and fresh. The place does get packed around lunchtime so it's best to call ahead if you can just get to-go. If you dine-in, go later in the lunch hour - but before 2:30 closing! The tables and booths are situated for optimal seating so there is just enough room for everyone. Standard southern fare is offered with daily specials and lots of BBQ. Everything is just like your gram would make it! It's great for a really filling meal. Just be warned, the smell of the food will stick with you all day - not that it's a bad thing - you just may have lots more cravings.

Visiting from Houston, I had to take the local Florida barbecue for a spin. Met the owner who delivered a special-made sampler plate of all smoked, no-rub meats and bottles of house made sauce. The ribs were the best part and I recommend the Hickory Sweet. Delish!

The reduction in stars is for price--just a little high for a greasy spoon diner. That said: Egg and cheese fried up to perfection, yoke and white stayed a little separate, bacon thick and good quality. Ate here for breakfast. Definitely a greasy spoon. Tea: very, very sweet. I half and halfed mine. Menu: $8 breakfast combo plate, $5 breakfast sandwiches, which is a little pricey. Features: saltwater aquarium 3 types of BBQ/mustard on table More than a dozen veggies on the board

Breakfast bowl was great with the spicy sausage. Excellent mix. Food was so filling that I couldn't finish my French toast which was great. Service was very nice & pleasant. Felt like home.

Nice little breakfast and lunch place. Stopped in for breakfast while staying at a nearby hotel. I had the pulled pork omelette, which was massive and tasty. The pulled pork was tender and had a very smoky flavor. They are only open for breakfast and lunch, so it is similar to First Watch or other such places. They are located near one of the elevated train stations (as in, directly across the street) so it's accessible even if you don't have a car.

Not bad. I had the breakfast burrito. I was expecting salsa and sour cream. A little bland but overall good. I would come back and try a different dish.

This place is amazing. I have eaten both breakfast and lunch here. The food is fabulous. I ordered the turkey, bacon and cream cheese panini. It's a must have! I also ordered a tailgating special before a Jags game that came with pulled pork sandwiches to die for! Highly recommend. Great, sweet staff. :)

Our search brought us to the Southern Grill located at 800 Flagler Ave. This restaurant offers a variety of dishes which one of them is a burger and that is why we are here. Let's get right into the review, shall we. As you can see from the picture the burger arrived like what you expect the typical American burger to look like. It looked perfect. Just the smell alone coming to the table made your mouth water. I was shocked taking my first bite how good it tasted. It was perfectly cooked exactly how I wanted it. Everything tasted fresh, homemade, cooked fresh. I think we all were shocked how good this burger tasted. The size was perfect. Not to forget the fries, fitted perfectly and tasted great as well. The only thing that was missing was that shake to make it the 'American perfect meal'. Which it had a wow factor to it, which I always look for, but other than that. If you are looking for a great hamburger then this is the place to try, highly recommend it. Hmmm actually thinking going back for another one........ P.S. Love the staff in there, always helpful, even with special orders. Just a great place. Burgergeeks.blogspot.com

Had lunch with a co-worker here yesterday. When I worked downtown, this was a pretty regular stop for me at lunch. The food is very good, and reasonably priced. Order and pay at the counter, and they'll bring it out to you. Parking can be an issue here, as they're wedged into a small lot with what amounts to an alley on two sides of the building. There is some commercial parking nearby, but you'll have to walk (horrors!) a block or two. I -believe- they're open on the weekends for breakfast.

Breakfast and Lunch only. Open 06:30 - 2:30. Solid Southern comfort food. Lot's of your favorite sides to go with your meal. I had a fantastic Meatloaf sandwich with coleslaw. The red beans and rice with sausage look awesome. I'll definitely be going back. Very inexpensive. Credit cards accepted.

Hot, fresh food, affordable, and great service. I came here yesterday with coworkers and I was pleasantly filled afterwards (and I still was for dinnertime, Haha). To my surprise, they have quite a few Middle Eastern items, but too bad they were not available that day. (What is the deal with food I want to eat being unavailable everytime I want to try it?) I ordered the meatball stroganoff with sides of tabbouleh, and hummus and pita. My meal came out pretty quickly and the stroganoff was piping hot. That tabbouleh was very fresh. Must have been made that day. They also added some cornbread with the meal, but unfortunately I was too stuffed before I could try it. You don't have waiter service, per se, but there was a lady who would come by time to time to clear our plates and ask us how we were doing. Very friendly, Southern hospitality.

So I had much here today. It was awesome! I ordered the pulled Pork sandwich with fries. It was delicious! The flavor of the meat was amazing. The fries were crisp and hot. The sauce was good not great. It was sweet and tangy. For $10 bucks this was a great lunch. I got my order to go and I was only there for 12 minutes. The smell of BBQ will make you want more. Overall this was a great experience.

Ordered BBQ omelette, Philly burger and a breakfast platter. Good quality food and nice portions. Price point was okay. Would go back in a heartbeat. Not very eloquent with my reviews but I'm too busy licking my fingers so go get some.

So good..glad we decided to take the minute drive over from Doubletree to this place. So much better than my $20 breakfast at the hotel. The omelets are good...the burger was great...a little salty, but great.

What a cool place for breakfast! No they dint have my corned beef hash, but maybe something better. They all day smoke their corned beef and it seriously cuts like butter. They put that over hash browns and topped with my over easy eggs, some seriously yummy stuff there buddy! I can't wait to come back for lunch and get a Ruben with that corned beef and their marbled rye bread. Come here and getcha some!

Second time I've been here. Last time was when I was traveling three years ago. Nothing has changed... And that is the charm. Super nice people. The prices are very reasonable, and they have selections for vegetarians. I had the falafel "burger". Delicious!

I eat here usually 3 times a week for lunch. It is fantastic. On occasion I will go on Saturday or Sunday for breakfast. There are not a lot of options for breakfast downtown on the weekend and this place hits it out of the park! If you live or work on the northbank take the skyway over and get off at the riverplace stop. Southern Grill is across the street. The skyway is free.

The Southern Grill is just so-so. We have been meaning to try it since we live close, can walk over and bring along our dog to join us at one of the outdoor picnic tables. You place your order at the counter and a server brings it to your table. Everything else is self-service, from filling your coffee cup to gathering silverware and any condiments you desire. I ordered the Spinach Eggs Benedict because I had such a taste for hollandaise sauce that morning. The food was really not memorable, under seasoned and underwhelming. Honestly, the highlight for me was the ability to walk there from home with our accompanying pup. I probably wouldn't return for a leisurely Sunday breakfast anytime soon, but I hear the hummus at lunchtime is tasty.

Decent if you're in the area. My breakfast bowl was tasty, but anything with grits, pulled pork, egg, and cheese should taste pretty good. It's not fine dining--pretty much standard diner food (at least for breakfast). Staff was friendly, and I could see myself coming back if I were in the area for sure. I'm sorry that this review is a bit incomplete because I didn't have a chance to have a full portion of BBQ.

I will have to say that this is a great breakfast. The place is hard to find thou. Tucked back in between a couple of big buildings. I know I have tried once before to find it and gave up. I found it today and I most yea. You first walk in and there's a big counter with a giant saltwater fish tank. There is probably the biggest dogface puffer that I have ever seen in it too. That thing had to be 15-16" long. There is also a spotted grouper that was about the same size then a couple of other tangs and triggers too. Now the food. I ordered the spicy Mexican Omelet has browns and rye toast. When it arrived it should have had a name it was huge. Fluffy eggs probably 4 xlarge and cheese and spicy Mexican spiced hamburger meat. This was also topped with chili sour cream and some salsa. A good portion of hash browns cooked just the way I like them. Almost burned but not burned black but crunchy cooked. The rye toast is normally just there but this toast was thick cut and also cooked the way I liked it. I really don't know why this meal hit me right but it did. Breakfast is normally one of those meals that you just do cause you should but this breakfast is one I will seek out again and again. Boy I hope they are open on weekends.

Ever want to go back to grandmas house for good comfort food? This is the place for a friendly staff combined with marvelous, good food. Wide range from BBQ, southern cooking, Mediterranean, and home. Drink the sweet tea and enjoy every moment. Lunch crowd in the work week is packed busy as a testament of the value. Daily lunch menu specials changes each day. Breakfast is epic.

Tucked away between businesses on the South Bank of the St. John's river is this rocking little joint that really pack a punch. Came for breakfast and wasn't disappointed. The comfort food is good and the service is better than the food. I will be back for sure.

This place is so good! And the staff is very friendly! We got there 15 minutes before they closed and they took our order with smiling faces. The food was terrific! Juicy beef brisket and savory mac n cheese! The fish tank kept our attention until our food was served which wasn't long at all. We just loved the overall friendliness and atmosphere of the place!

If we forget the fact that The Southern Grill is one of the few restaurants within spitting distance of my office and take them at food value, they are an absolutely fantastic place for classic southern comfort cooking at any time of day. Between my colleagues and myself we've worked our way through most of the menu and have rarely been disappointed. For those of you unfortunate enough to take a lunch before 1pm be warned, the place is packed up until 12:30-1pm. I'm fortunate enough to be able to take my lunch whenever my schedule allows, and I only ever visit TSG after 1pm when I know I'll always find a clean table, however they close at 2:30pm so time it right! The only downside is that a lot of their big food favourites have been eaten up by the time I get there, but with a menu so colossal you'll always find something you'll enjoy. Being fortunate enough to work nearby I don't have to worry about parking, however they are located on a very small lot that only has limited parking so you may have a bit of a walk on your hands if you're coming in from elsewhere. Enjoy the fish tank that sits in front of the counter. It's a little random and a touch out of place for what is essentially a greasy spoon diner, however it's an odd addition that somehow becomes a complimentary part of the overall atmosphere. You order and pay at the counter, grab your number and they will bring your food to you - you'll have time to pour yourself a drink from their soft drink stand and grab your cutlery. Thankfully each table has a napkin dispenser. The breakfast options are big and filling: burritos, breakfast bowls, French toast, combo plates, omelets and so on. For lunch you can either dine in or take out: all are large portions that are well seasoned and very filling including meatloaf, chicken parmesan, country fried steak, pulled pork/beef/turkey, smoked pork ribs, bourbon chicken, Jamaican grouper or their secret off-menu item of Southwest Grouper, meatballs and so on. They offer a great range of sides including tobouli salad (slightly too tart and vinegary for me), hummus & pita, BBQ beans, collard greens, mashed potato & gravy, potato salad, corn bread, mac'n'cheese (with penne pasta instead of macaroni, which is a nice change), coleslaw, french fries and so on. They're usually out of mashed potato & gravy by the time I get there, but bizarrely enough their rice works perfectly with every dish that I've had it with. Spend more than 15-minutes in TSG and the sweet, musky smell of smoke will cling to you for the rest of the day. Great food, good prices, manic at lunchtime but with all the surrounding offices you already knew it'd be popular, and it's a bit of a lottery as to what dishes and sides are left the later you visit.

I've had breakfast here twice and the service is quick and friendly. The omelettes are large portions and taste great. I have also had the blueberry pancakes and these were great as well.

Went in right before closing and wasn't given the stink eye... Food was good I had the Q Burger and fries. Met an employee who cleared our table for us who really made us feel welcomed and invited us to return. That kind of service and food is a return visit from me for certain! Did I mention the fish? Check out the fish tank.... They got a couple really cool ones.

Disappointing breakfast. How difficult can bacon and eggs be? The place had a greasy spoon feel. There was a smell of BBQ smoke and the rib plates looked good. Maybe that's their forte.

One of my favorite lunch spots! Cajun fish with red beans and rice, cabbage, corn bread is my go-to. Lots of food for a good price, comes with a drink.

This is our first visit at this location and I can say it will not go back. The pulled pork sandwich was good, the coleslaw was good, but the baked beans were probably the worst I've ever had. What bothered me so much was the rudeness when I asked to order from the kids menu. Not everyone asking to order from the kids menu are cheapskates. Some like me can only eat small portions of food at a time. To pay $10 for a sandwich and a side and only able to eat half of it did not make me a happy customer. I do not think this restaurant has a concern for pleasing their customers. And I have many concerns for wasting my money.

Sooooo tasty. Eat the ribs. Or the pulled pork. Or breakfast. This was near our hotel. We were in jacksonville for 2 days. We are there four times. I wish it were 6 !

Pulled pork was good - brisket unexceptional, but prices reasonable and clean. Breakfast can be ordered all day long, which made my daughters happy. The smell of smoked meats and barbeque ehen you open the door smells amazing. I am sure I just ordered the wrong thing.

Joey Farrah is a game changer. The restaurant staff is professional and very organized. The menu is delicious. I recommend the BBQ omelet for breakfast and be sure to get the BBQ for lunch w/ beans and slaw for a side. Highly recommend!!!!

The Southern Grill could very well be a four-star restaurant, but I've only been once, and my experience more three-star. (Oh Yelp gods, why can't we give half stars!?!) Located just north of 95 on Flagler Avenue, SG strikes me as a prime lunch location for downtown worker bees. I immediately liked the homey vibe when I walked in, even the somewhat-out-of-place, giant fish tank in the center of the room, which otherwise looked like my grandma's kitchen. A chalkboard near the entrance displayed magical words like "Collard Greens" and "Mac N Cheese," and these also comforted me. I grabbed a menu from the counter and WHOA, WAIT, WHAT? It was huge! Omelets, Pitas, Meatloaf, Kibbeh, BBQ Pork, Cubans, Pancakes, Burgers, Taco Salad... I mean, seriously, this menu was crazier than Carly Rae Jepsen. After 45 minutes, I finally decided on the Pulled Pork Cuban Wrap. The owner, Joey, came by to greet us and let us know they took orders at the counter, which was fine. (I just needed to sit for a second and digest that menu!) He also informed us the BBQ meat was fresh off the smoker, which helped me make my decision. Our food came out quickly, and my sandwich looked great, as did the side of Mac N Cheese I just had to order. My pal got the BBQ Omelet, and it was huge! My Mac N Cheese was, in fact, very good, and I'm known to be pretty picky about the mac. My sandwich was kinda just mehhhh though. The meat was nothing special and the cheese had that rubbery thing going on. Oh well, I still enjoyed the first half. My girlfiend's omelet looked good, but when she cut it open we saw it was WAY overloaded with meat -- seriously, like an egg blanket wrapped around a chopped hunk of pork, turkey, AND beef. Whoa.. for breakfast?? Get out the Tums. She said it tasted pretty good despite being a little overwhelming. Joey came back to check on us and we chatted for a bit about the Grill and Jacksonville at large. Although my food wasn't stellar, I liked the place and the owner and, with a giant menu like that, I can definitely see myself going back again. I'll stick to my usual Biscuits and Gravy next time though!

I love this place. I wish it were open later though. Every weekend I think about going there, and then I realize they close at 2. Must be nice for the staff, but can a brother get some PM BBQ?!

This is not a Mediterannean. It is more like "Southern" style food as the name reflects. It serves mostly bbq items. Breakfast is great here and a deal. I got the breakfast bowl with bbq corned beef, grits, egg, cheese and more. It was about 4 bucks and I had a side of hot coffee. Absolutely yummy. The hostess was extremely friendly and helpful. She navigated us through the menu items fairly quickly with great detail on what we would expect with each dish. I am a fan!
