The building of this place looks like it has been there for 50 years. I'm good with that for a local hole in the wall bbq joint. As soon as you pull up you can smell the the smoky aroma of a bbq pit. So far so good! The inside of the place looks just as old as the outside but we are kindly greeted by a server right away. You pretty much seat yourself which is fine with me. But, the first table that I choose has a dead fly sitting on it!? Then I notice several more flies buzzing around. I say whatever and sit down. I then notice several dead files on the window sill. Kind of feeling uncomfortable now. We order anyway despite the insect situation. One of the guys I'm with comes back from the restroom and tells me not to use the urinal. I am curious now so I proceed to the restroom. First off the restroom was tiny. Then I look at the urinal....it is covered up with cardboard and duct tape....not like a it just broke kind of thing but like a permanent we don't give a crap that it doesn't work deal. The duct tape had been on there so long that some of it had started to peel off. I was like, what in the hell is this? Also, there was no toilet paper to be found. I guess they don't want you using the toilet either?. I order the pork sandwich with a side of collard greens, green beans, and banana pudding for dessert. The pork was cooked well and soaked up the house bbq sauce well (there is only one kind of bbq sauce here!). The sauce was great and I poured on enough to make the bun soggy. The vegetables were seasoned perfectly and came out at the right temperature. The banana pudding did not look great but was fantastic Everyone else that I was with enjoyed the food. The only other complaint was that the fried chicken arrived so hot that they could not bite in right away. Not a bad problem to have. I think that I will be back here despite the cleanliness/bathroom issues. I have seen worse....i think. I'm all about some good food and it was indeed good. I say 2.5 stars only because of the insect issue.

Burrito Warrior here. -I've just arrived at this magical place. -You seat yourself. -Pretty clean looking, but with that rustic feel. -I only saw one fly; alive and flying. This is an improvement from an earlier review that mentioned dead flies around the place. -Very very easy going and friendly staff; the ladies there called me more loving pet names in one hour, than my wife in a couple of days. (Cue the violin) -Ordering was easy; I got the Bar-B-Q sampler with Coleslaw and French Fries on the side. -Rib meat was not as soft as I thought it would be, and was not quite "falling off the bone", but not too tough. -Chicken was very soft and juicy. -Shredded pork was soft and juicy. -Coleslaw was a bit watery. -French fries were the regular fat slices you get at other restaurants. -Sauces available were ketchup, sweet BBQ, and their signature sauce, which is mustard based. Overall: Deeeeelicious!!!! The 4 star is due to the Ribs being a bit tough.

Do not be fooled by the hole in the wall look of this place, it's a diamond in the rough for decent homemade style BBQ. Excellent smoked meat. Sides are decent but the real star here is the BBQ chicken.

The Pig BBQ - Northside Lem Turner, Jacksonville, Fl. - Let me start by saying I pretty much eat here every week. My job is located on this side of town so when I can't figure out what to eat for lunch.....The Pig always pops up. Not only do they have great lunch specials but they're not all about the BBQ. They serve other items such as seafood and fried chicken as well. I usually eat here atleast twice a week because they do have variety. My favorite is their fish with green beans and cole slaw. Now let me tell you about the cole slaw. They make the best cole slaw I've ever tasted! Really. Maybe it's because it's finely chopped and sorta on the sweet side, doesn't matter... it's good! Their green beans are also awesome, if green beans can be awesome...yeah right, I know. Somehow whoever cooks them seasons them very well, how excited can someone be over green beans??? You just have to try them. The service is very friendly and I usually call in my orders for pick up. They stay pretty busy for lunch time and I'm never put on hold for very long and again, they are always friendly even on the phone. I did once order a 2 rib lunch special and when I returned to my car I looked inside my carrier and noticed they put a very thin end piece in there that I never like eating. My husband loves the end pieces but I do not. Well anyways, I took it back in to let them know and they returned my food to the cook and he replaced it with a HUGE rib. Now that's my kind of satisfaction! He then looked at me from the kitchen pleasantly, and waited on my response when asked was it ok! I smiled and said that's fantastic. So with all the experiences I've had at this place, the food is great! I almost forgot to tell you about their ribs!!! Their ribs are a dark color but don't be fooled, they are NOT burnt, when you bite into them they are the juiciest, tender hickory flavored BBQ ribs you would ever want to sink you teeth into. Each time I order, they are always hot in fact all the food they serve is piping hot. You just have to try their sweet BBQ sauce, so yummy! People BBQ just doesn't get any better than this. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars is because they could use a little updating on their building. The bathroom is the worst, sorry guys! And when you first come in the door it's a little crowded from the door to the counter when they're busy. Even if they don't remodel, who cares.....me and my husband are coming for the fantastic food! Be sure to check them out, you won't be disappointed!

I eat here less than at the Normandy location, but the food quality is the same, and the service may be slightly better. Maybe that's due to my visits here being mostly at dinner, and not so much lunch. This location has counter service as well as tables and booths, and they do a pretty brisk take-out business, as well.

Loaded stuffed BBQ baked potato, 1/2 Chicken, and a favorite of ours a slab of ribs. We usually get it to go. When you want down home BBQ, no fuss no muss, here it is. It's always busy and you get a good southern welcome here.
