Whoa buddy! I had a burrito that was the size of my forearm. MY FOREARM! :-O And, oh by the way, it was frikken delicious! I desperately needed a forklift to haul my fat self out of there after lunch. This is on my "go at least once a month" list... forever! :) Seriously, stop reading this and go here. Now!

Very disappointed! This place has real potential. We sat at the bar and the bartender was great. However, my salmon came out burnt and when I mentioned it to him, he just apologized. Nothing was offered to fix it. Definitely do not plan on eating the burnt food again. *sidenote: the pecan crusted goat cheese app was delish.

Disclaimer: This review has nothing to do with food. A group of 12 friends and I went last night around 715. Prior, one of us had called and was told that they don't accept reservations, but they would keep it in mind we were coming. The place is pretty small and I find it strange they wouldn't take reservations for large parties, but that's beside the point. When the first few of us arrived we were told when half the party arrived they would get a table together for us but it might take a little bit since they were busy. That was fine. We waited upstairs at the bar and checked in a few times. There was a table of 8 that was eating with an empty table for 4 next to them. The host told me that when the 8 top finished we could push the two together. 1 hour after we arrived I went for the third time to check in the status of our table. I found that the host had just sat the 4 top table even though the 8 top was about to pay. His response : "it's busy and I can't just be holding tables." We were there for 1 HOUR buying drinks and waiting to eat. On a Thursday night. I find that kind of customer service unacceptable and doubt I will return based on that alone. The only reason there are 2 stars instead of one is that the upstairs bartender was very friendly and attentive. Maybe I'll go back and sit at his bar. - very disappointed customer

Where have I been! How did I miss this place that has TaCoS!? Not anymore! I stopped for lunch and fell in love. The SW cuisine is ... from the basics to delicious Mexican entrees. High quality meats and fresh vegetables combined with skilled cooking and attractive presentation make for a very enjoyable time. Servers are ever present and so friendly. Staff members are all attentive and focused on customer needs. All entrees are made fresh and in house as so are they beautiful desserts. I will be back and it will be soon!

Service was amazing. The waitress was very friendly and followed up periodically without having to ask assistance. The food came out promptly and everything was fresh and the presentation was delightful. The prices aren't bad either. I will definitely return again.

Great place for a nice happy hour upstairs at the bar. The beer selection is just right with just the right combination of domestic, imported, and local brews both on tap and by the bottle. The margaritas got a rave review from my friends too. We just had chips and salsa, but the salsa was just perfect for us. A nice mild, smokey, fire roasted tomato salsa with a slight hint of spice. I look forward to going back soon for a full meal.

My chips were stale, and my margarita weak. This place seemed way overhyped, and expensive for the quality of food I was given. I don't think I will be returning.

Interesting decor. A bit eclectic I might say, with strung Christmas lights. But it's quirky atmosphere is just what attracts you to the place. Choice of 2 floors. Each has a bar and upstairs there are couches. Light crowd on a Tuesday but the service was quick and the food was surprisingly good. I had the margarita and 2 tacos. My friend's fish taco was very good. The calamari taco was insane! The carnitas one was having a love affair with cumin. Overpowered the pork for my taste. Only thing that was negative was a drip from the ac unit. Easily resolved by moving over.

Have to add an update to my original review. With mediocre service from the waiter upstairs (not the guy) we were highly disappointed in the cheese dip with beef added....on happy hour still ended up at $11.00. Giving them 2 additional stars for the previous amazing experience. Do not recommend their con queso dip ever, to anyone....no matter how much I don't like you :)

The first time I came to Mossfire I wasn't impressed and I wasn't sure if I would ever return. Since then I've been back a number of times and can honestly say that I think Mossfire serves some pretty yummy food. I also love their small upstairs rooftop patio. I guess I was too quick to judge the first time because if you asked me now to recommend a place to go in Riverside, Mossfire would be towards the top of my list!

I had two of their tacos for lunch. The Jerk Chicken and the Carnitas. They tasted great! I also enjoyed the fire roasted salsa and chips. Heads up though...Chips/salsa isn't complimentary at lunch. It is also worth noting that they don't have a changing table in the restrooms there. My sister was with us and my 1 year old nephew.

Very nice staff-ok food imo. Spinach chicken quesadilla had only traces of spinach and dry chicken and overloaded w cheese. The salsa was too sweet. The plantains were very good The guac was very good. The tacos were ok The Margarita tasted like all mix. I guess I need not say more. But again the staff was wonderful!! Habanero salsa very good

I am only giving 4 stars because I think they can update the decor to match the amazing food coming out of the kitchen! The place isn't dirty, just needs a little facelift. I took my boyfriend for Father's Day. Had the plantain appetizer. Delicious! Chicken empanadas... Delicious! My daughter had the Mossfire Burger and she let me have a bite... Oh yes! Will have to go back for that one. My BF had the burrito and was very happy with it. We all split a piece of the peanut butter chocolate pie and I broke my two-bite rule... It was amazing and not too rich. We also indulged in the margaritas and they were very good. Will be returning!

My boyfriend loved the burrito he got. I ordered the Adobe chicken sandwich with the steamed veggies as the side. The service and atmosphere was great and the staff was friendly. I'm giving three stars because my sandwich came out cold. The lettuce was half rotten and the cheese wasnt melted due to the chicken being so cold and the whole sandwich was rather bland. The veggies were delicious. So although not terrible, I would give it another chance and order something different.

Mossfire is such a yummy place with a really comfy atmosphere. The food is outstanding! I invited a friend for a quick Taco Tuesday and although hesitant (with preference to just go elsewhere with"taco" in the name) they were more than satisfied after the first bite. I opted for calamari and chicken tacos while my guest devoured steak and shrimp tacos. We did share a gouda quesadilla as well but it was gone before I could even snap a picture. The hostess that sat us was a little unpleasant but we chose not to take it personally - and as a reward, our waitress was a pure sweetheart! Prices are not necessarily cheap but definitely reasonable. It's a good place to stop by for a light meal or filling dinner.

Greeted with a modern, wooden architectural design, Mossfire Grill seems to invite you in to experience their grounded, earthy flavors from the sidewalk. Their chips and salsa, the benchmark with which one judges most Mexican restaurants, is the least exciting and representative option available at this eatery. You're more likely, and a rewarding choice it will be, to go with their plantains or nachos. Both were amazing in the type of way that your tastebuds start anticipating the next bite. And the next dish. I ordered the black bean sandwich with caramelized red onions and a side of their green chile soup. The patty itself was quite greasy and lacking seasoning, suprising for a black bean burger. I was thankful that there was Cholula hot sauce on the table and that I added caramelized onions, as that probably packed the most flavor into the burger. The soup didn't impress me, but it could be a personal taste thing. I had a chance to see a lot of their other vegetarian options and they all looked delicious, but had mixed reviews. The hummus tasted different, and not in a good way, and supposedly the tempeh was also lacking flavor. But as with any eatery, half of the experience is the service and the servers here were awesome and accommodating, both with seating our large group of 10 and being sensitive to our dietary needs as strict vegetarians. Food alone, this place deserves between 2.5-3 stars, but the service and nice atmosphere easily has it leaning into the 3 star range. I really wanted to give this place a higher rating, but the food disappointed me.

Oh boy, here we go... It had been a while since I've been to Mossfire, Mr. Yelp had never been, and it was 5:30 pm: we were hungry and I was looking for inspiration for my next review. Confession time: I'm not really a fan of Tex-Mex, so if you are, you may want to take this review with a grain of chipotle. Or actually a huge freakin barrel of it, because it's used in everything. Now, don't get me wrong, I love spicy and a good smoked flavor, but dang... it's too much for me. I guess while I'm at it, the décor is dated and could use a good makeover. There is so much uniqueness to the space, I'd love to see it shine again. The salsa is a little too sweet for my taste, but it's not bad. We started by ordering the spinach con queso and a bowl of the soup of the day, roasted Poblano soup. The queso was bleh, which was sad and I'll come back to the soup. For entrees, I ordered the special Mossfire carnitas and the gentleman ordered the pecan chicken. The carnitas looked gorgeous, but it ended there. It tasted like BBQ sauce (again with the chipotle and sweetness) on the slow roasted pork, and the lime, when squeezed over, made for a very odd taste. I tried adding queso and then hot sauce and after three bites, I was over it. The side of beans and rice were unimpressive as well. I did have a bite of the pecan chicken. The pecan crust was all pecan, no filler, and had a stale, dense taste to it. The mustard on top was a glorified honey mustard.... sadface. I wish I had ordered one of my usual dishes, the shrimp or tempeh tacos. But sometimes you want to try something new, exciting, and different... and sometimes, it disappoints. The saving grace of the entire experience was the Poblano soup. Now, this was excellent! It had a bit of a grainy texture, but a nice bite to it, mixed with the cream base.... delicious! Even Mr. Yelp liked it and he is not generally a spicy fan. The roasted pumpkin seeds on top were a very nice touch. It was actually so good, and I was still a bit hungry, so we ordered two more bowls to go... and really glad I did. That saved a star in my rating. And Angela, our server, who was super sweet and attentive.

This was my first time at the Mossfire Grill. I had seen little local tv spots showing off some of the cocktails, food & the owner. So watching it made me want to give the place a try. The complimentary chips and salsa you get at the table were very good. Salsa had good flavor. I ordered the fish tacos. You can get them with salmon or mahi mahi, I got the mahi blackened with the soft tacos. The fish was very flavorful and had a good amount of veggies and sauce to accompany the fish. The beans and rice were very good to. If there was anything I didn't like, it would have been the piece of parsley sprig on the beans and rice. As I chef I hate that as a garnish. I would rather you dice it up then garnish the food. But to leave a whole leaf sitting atop my food is no no. Service was good. The female server we had was good and made us feel welcome. I def. will be back to try the rest of the menu. I have been looking for a good local tex-mex/mexican food restaurant to eat at.

Went in after seeing the 4-5 stars and I'm very glad I did. Very nice interior and the staff is very welcoming. I came in for a quick light lunch and got the tacos which I ordered two of them. The Baja Fish Taco was good little dry on the fish but adding the homemade salsa did the trick. The Calimari taco was recommended to me by the waiter and it was the best of the two. The Calimari was perfectly cooked and very moist. I will be back next time I'm in JAX for work

After another amazing ride with Uber car service I was walking around the Riverside Five Points area last night. I decided to try Mossfire Grill for dinner. The hostess was very bubbly and welcomed me right in around 9:30. There is outside seating on the street which looks very fun. The inside has a restaurant downstairs and bar/restaurant upstairs. I chose the upstairs and was impressed. It had a very casual yet hip atmosphere. I ordered the seared tuna tacos which were delicious. My server brought nachos and salsa before the meal. The tacos were served with black beans and rice. Everything was good. I especially liked the helpful friendly service of everyone working there!

Great Mexican food. I got the tacos and my boyfriend got a burrito and they were both excellent. The burritos are huge! And so good: The margaritas are also good. Great portions and inexpensive. Great place to go.

I don't know why Mossfire ended up on our radar the other night for dinner, but I'm really glad it did. Especially since it turned out to be Margarita Mondays! We ventured across town to indulge in a little Tex-Mex. We found ourselves a table upstairs, but eventually made our way to the outdoor patio. I ordered the burrito (as I believe I've done every time); this time with tempeh. Of course, it had to be smothered. My husband ordered the fish tacos and my nephew ordered tacos as well. The burrito at MFG is ginormous and I usually take half of it home. Not this time! I must have been really hungry because I ate almost every last bite. The flavors of all the ingredients inside were firing on all cylinders. If we lived in the neighborhood and could have walked home we would have definitely indulged in another margarita.

My boyfriend and I went here on a Saturday for lunch. The waitress really knew what she was doing and I could understand that right off the bat, which was nice. We are both vegan, and our waitress had no problem answering our questions about the menu. We ordered the fried plantain appetizer, black bean burger with green chile soup (hold the cheese), and tempeh tacos. The plantains were great! Nothing I could make at home which makes it totally worth it. Habanero-mango salsa was amazing too! The green chile soup was very good. I am from New Mexico, and this was the closest thing I've had to green chile stew since I've moved to Florida. The tempeh tacos were nice. But, for the price, I was not super impressed. I will likely order a burrito bowl next time I'm here instead. Overall, our experience was very nice. I would recommend this restaurant for a date, definitely.

My husband and I are new to town, and we wanted to try different restaurants that were new to us. Billy was our waiter, and he gave us great service. The hostess made sure we were not skipped on a busy Friday night, and let us look at the menu before we were seated. We are so glad we chose Mossfire Grill to be the first of many restaurants in Jacksonville to eat at!!!!

NEW Menu ALERT!! No More pecan chicken! Omg I'm sad anyway the new menu is cool. Everybody is going Ramsay style these days with all the trendy-ness. Come early and enjoy the drink specials. The calamari tacos are ok at best. The Baja tacos are amazing please get the mahi-mahi you will be thinking me and friend requesting me soon!

  • Linda D.

I love their tempeh ka-pow tacos. Although now, the menu changed and you buy each taco and side ala carte. You only get 3 small, thin slices of tempeh per $4 taco. I'm disappointed at the small amount in each taco. Next time, I'll ask for double tempeh even though it'll cost more. I'll still go, now just have to adjust my expectations and know the prices are higher for the same amount of food.

Although I have only been there one time, based on that experience I plan on going again. I would give it 3.5 stars if i could. I sat at the bar with a friend at the end of happy hour. I had a bloody mary which was good, but nothing out of the ordinary. My friend ordered the house margarita which was on special all night. It came out of a tap, and to be honest I didn't think it was good at all. But, she liked it and they were cheap. The bartender was friendly and attentive. The chips she gave us were good and I really liked the salsa. For dinner we shared a chicken quesadilla and the meatloaf. The quesadilla was better than average but nothing to write home about. The meatloaf on the other hand was amazing! We were told it was run as a special initially and due to high demand became a regular menu item. I can see why! So good! The prices were reasonable. The upstairs area was great--cant wait to get a table on the deck. I look forward to going back and trying some more items.

I have few words to describe how awesome this place is but please don't let the lack of a lengthy review not let me get the point across that this place is just plain amazing! The chips & salsa and The fried plantains with mango habanero salsa are to die for, we ended up getting some mango habanero salsa to go! For our meals we got the burrito and the chimichangas both were just amazing! The only thing stopping 5 stars was the wait on drink refills. All in all a must try, we had a party of 7 and everyone loved their meal!

I've been here a handful of times, thanks to my honey. He loves it... I think it's alright. We've had brunch a couple of times. I can't recall what I had but am positive that I did enjoy it. This time we came for dinner after a run with another couple. We were seated right away, and were taken care of quickly. We ordered wings and nachos. The nachos looked heavenly when they came out, large portion. Very tasty indeed, and lots of goody on top. I'd order them again. The wings... not so much. You could definetly taste the grill on these wings. They were dry, maybe too dry. I've had better for sure. The place is clean, and service is friendly. Nothing really to write home about, but I would come again.

The Food has always held up to its reputation. The service as well. Except for today. Today we were greeted poorly. We were not welcomed nor addressed in a professional manner. I'd tell you the servers name but she neglected to mention it among other things. Took 15 mins for her to return with our drink list. We received 2 Michelob ultras 25 mins after we sat. She took our order hurried and rudely. She neither suggested or explained anything. We came with the intention of drinking a few cocktails and pigging out on a few apps with the very real intention of ordering entrees as well. In conclusion. When we do return we will stick with the upstairs lounge area. We should have went to black sheep should be the name of this review.

Mossfire is to mediocre as water is to wet. Short of stellar service provided by one adorable Angela, the Mossfire grill missed in all front leaving this Yelper hard pressed to offer more than anything other than three star. We both tried one of their specials, the lady had their carnitas which she couldn't finish and I the pecan chicken. After trying the carnitas, let's just say I even wasn't impressed and refused to take home the leftovers and if anyone knew me, it means something when Mr Yelp won't event take it home. My pecan chicken did admittedly get eaten but I was starving and they could have put the mustard sauce on a piece of cardboard. But but, not all is lackluster, they boil up a good side of veggies... Yeah that will get your taste buds watering. The star if the night was my lady... Beautiful as always...and also the Pablano bisque. It had the right amount of spicy kick and a heartiness to it though it was truly a light soup, the toasted pumpkin seeds lend themselves gloriously to the overall taste.

This is a good option in the Five Points area especially as it serves food all afternoon. I recently came here with a group in the middle of the afternoon and some of us got full meals and others got appetizers. This is Tex-Mex cuisine but it is not like the food I have had when I am actually in Texas. Their salsa has a strong liquid smoke flavor and I have never had that type of salsa in Texas. Their hummus is also flavored with liquid smoke flavor and I would prefer it didn't have this flavoring. One of my companions got an entrée that came with mixed vegetables and they were over cooked and tasteless. My favorite food item was the caramelized onion and gouda cheese quesadilla. I will definitely get those next time I am there. We sat upstairs on the second floor and it was comfortable and it was easy to see the TVs and follow a game they had on. I think this is a friendly, comfortable place that is good to go with a group, and it has a suitable selection of food to satisfy most people, as long as you don't expect outstanding Tex-Mex food.

Ughhhh....Well, this place used to be a lot better..I love the Mayport shrimp and grits for a good lunch or brunch but tonite it was just an app nite. The nachos were good. Piled high and fresh. But my grilled wings were not very appealing. They're gilled and you can definitely taste it. Don't get me wrong, I like grilled but these just had a bad burnt taste. Im sure Ill give them another try and Ill edit my review if it warrants it.

First off: awesome staff. First came here before prom last year; the waitress overheard us talking about Doctor Who. A few minutes later one of her coworkers comes and shows us his DW tattoo she'd asked him to. After our food, she brought us a big piece of chocolate cake with "bowties are cool" written on the plate in sauce. Um, legendary. The food is great and there's something for everyone. I've been twice and loved both trips- special dietary needs were taken care of by friendly workers. Atmosphere is laid back while still being very clean and classy. Its on the other side of town so I cant go as often as I'd like, but I always look forward to whenever I can go. Its my downtown "go to" for hanging out. Highly suggest for both locals and tourists. Check it out if you haven't.

I'm just going to get right to the point... Mossfire is cute, the people are friendly, it's a good price point, and the food is awesome. -When we walked in, we were seated immediately. Our drink orders were taken. -They have great happy hour specials. Local brews and mixed drinks. -Ahi tuna tacos: one soft one crunchy, habañero salsa, rice with beans and onions atop, cilantro. -Good portions, good price. Market price for my dinner was $12.95 Mossfire is now on my regular rotation. My ahi tuna was perfectly cooked... I think next time I'm going to get 3 crunch tacos. The salsas are amazing, and that's high praise from a Texas girl.

I went to eat dinner here with a buddy who lives in town and I loved it. I loved everything about this place: ambiance, food, and service! I got a huge burrito with steak and it was so delicious! They have a great selection of beer on tap! Our server was really nice and very helpful. I highly recommend this place!

Today was lunch with the boss and service was superb. I could not even try to get thirsty. I ordered the BBQ pork burrito. While I wanted the smothered I was trying to be a little healthy... OK the boss didn't order it.. I loved it. The BBQ was sweet and a tiny bit spicy. There was cheese rice and black beans in with it and it became a fork eating frenzy at one point. I was full at the point my boss told me that the cookie was a necessity and am I glad I had it. Warm oatmeal cookie with chocolate chips and powdered sugar. It was crispy on the outside and chewy inside. I loved it. I also love the margaritas when I'm not hear for lunch. Please come support this wonderful local restaurant and keep riverside what it is. This and O'Brothers will always be staples for me.

Mossfire never disappoints. It is one of the top spots among my friends and I. As far as I know, everything is made in house. Honestly, I've never received a meal there I didn't thoroughly enjoy. The menu has something for everyone... crabcakes, tacos, gouda quesidillas (yes...you read that right), soups, salads..you name it. Even though it is a Southwestern joint, I usually get the black bean burger which is absolute perfection. And I always start with a side salad because the red chile vinaigrette is AMAZING. Yesterday, I tried the tortilla soup... it was flavorful but not spicy, chocked full of vegetables and hearty... it definitely hit the spot on a cold day. The staff is super friendly and all seem to enjoy their jobs. The decor is unique and festive...the flowers in the tequila bottles are a cute touch. The downstairs is more of a cozy, intimate atmosphere while the upstairs is a bar/lounge setting. The bar upstairs also has a patio with a cool view. I definitely recommend treating yourself to a Mossfire meal.

Great location in a wonderful setting...this may be the only restaurant that still fits the area since all the other places have become so updated and modernized. An excellent wait staff that is more then happy to serve you wonderful drinks, unfortunately that's about all they can serve. The food is so below average for the area and it's really a shame considering everything else is wonderful. I ordered the fish tacos which stunk up the whole patio since the tuna was old. After our wonderful server took them back and agreed the fish was bad she bought out the smoked Gouda quesadillas and they were excellent considering I lost my appetite after I just had a bite of old tuna. This place has nothing to offer and I will probably never return even though I love the atmosphere...better yet grab a meal from Wendy's across the street and sit on their awesome patio. The owner should sweep out the chefs and revamp the kitchen. Also it should have been a sign that it was the only restaurant who could seat us immediately.

The Mossfire Grill is situated in the cute little area of Riverside in Jacksonville. I love the eclectic nature of this area and Mossfire fits right in with comfy indoor couch seating areas, bar seating, outdoor seating and a seriously friendly wait staff. Everything on the menu looked tasty, but we ordered the fried plantains, chicken tortilla soup, and shrimp tacos. Everything had a great spicy flavor and was delicious. If you are not a spicy food fan then I would say this isn't the place for you. For spice fans nothing was overly hot, just a little kick and even in suprising places like the plantains with guacamole and a spicy jam.

Been here a few times and I really dig this place. Chill atmosphere, good music, strong drinks, and good food. Their fish tacos (yellow fin tuna), salsa, Gouda quesadilla, and plantain chips are fantastic. I wasn't a huge fan of their mahi mahi or meatloaf sandwich but everything else I've had has been fantastic. The house margarita is the best and strong! Definitely a happy hour favorite for my husband and I :)

If you go to this place take your business up stairs to the best staff and food on the street. I have had just about everything on their menu and it is all very good. My favorites being the Ka Pow Shrimp Tacos, the Nachos with Blackened chicken, the Crab Cakes and the Meat Loaf w/Mashed and Veggies. They also have the best Margaritas in NE Florida! The entire staff is awesome! Bon Appetite!

Pleasant place for a meal, sometimes the service is a little slow. Stopped by for brunch today, and enjoyed a Hogover with jalapeno cheese grits. I'd have preferred a bit more jalapeno and cheese, but they were decent. Eggs done as orderd, and the hog... well... hard to go wrong with pig. Server kept my tea glass full for the most part.

Popped in for brunch today and ordered some bloody Marys. I don't usually drink bloody Marys but every once in a while they sound good, and I can't help myself. I'm glad today was one of those days. They were perfect. There wasn't a ton of stuff in it, it was just spicy enough, and not too tomatoey. As for the actual breakfast, I tried the Biscuits and Gravy, which I was hesitant about given that it was chorizo. Turns out it was delicious. The biscuits are fresh and made from scratch, mmmmm... We also got to sit outside and upstairs so it was very quiet and secluded on a very beautiful day. Great times.

Plantain chips YUM! Blackened Manu tacos also tasty. Better atmosphere upstairs at outside patio. Bartenders are friendly! Menu has good variety.

Awful dining and customer service experience. The host sat us at a dirty table, then the server took our order without writing it down and - no surprise- she messed it up. After eating half our entrees without any beverages, I refilled both mine and my husband's glasses with water from the host stand and no one ever noticed! The service was actually so bad that another table walked out. I wish we had, too. We'll never be back.

If your in the 5 Points/Riverside area of town this is the place to go. Mossfire has great food and a "not-your-same-ole-southwest-restaurant" taste. It's like a flavor explosion in every bite here...real time is spent on every dish with high quality ingredients. Fish tacos are amazing, steak salad is the best in town, and everything else is pretty much awesome. Service is fast and friendly. I take clients here all the time and sitting upstairs gives a more private feel for business conversations. Don't forget on you way out to get one of their incredible Mossfire cookies; they are huge and delicious. Only negative is finding a place to park.

One of my favorite places to eat in this town! There Sunday brunch is absolutely amazing, probably the best I've had. Get the Denver skillet. Pretty much everything on their menu is good and the service is always amazing!

Wonderful local restaurant. Everything is always fresh and delicious! Friendly service. They also have a brunch on the weekends. The portions are quite large and the bloody Marys are the best!

The salmon tacos were delicious as were the yellow fin tuna. The chicken tacos were mediocre as the chicken was dried out. The hummus was delicious. Service was very attentive. We would recommend a visit.

The tempeh nachos are sooooooo good. And the waiter was dressed like a taco! Patron and pineapple helped, too. :)

It seems like I've always been meaning to try The Mossfire Grill. It's not a restaurant that everyone RAVES about and insists you go to all the time, but it's more of a solid staple. Good food, cool atmosphere, friendly service. Our group of four was lucky enough to snag a table on the quaint upstairs patio, and as I examined the menu, I realized that this place was pretty cool. Lobster Chimichanga, Gouda Cheese Quesadilla, Crab Cake Salad? I saw a lot that intrigued me, and narrowing it down proved to be pretty tricky. Ultimately I went with the BBQ Shrimp Tostada. Man, it was HUGE! When our server put my plate in front of me, all I saw was a ginormous pile of lettuce topped with savory, saucy shrimp and drizzled with cool sour cream. Yum! I actually asked for the sour cream on the side 'cause I'm not a fan, but it wasn't overdone so I didn't nitpick. Underneath all the foliage was melty cheddar, black beans and a crisp, crunchy tortilla. I really enjoyed alternating digging in with a fork and eating it "pizza style" by picking up tortilla pieces topped with all the fixings. The flavors were great and everything was cooked perfectly. We had a great time sitting outside in the crisp, fall air, admiring all the tree tops with a backdrop of cloudless sky. Every employee I came into contact with was friendly, full of personality, and seemed to genuinely enjoy their jobs. (Always a nice plus!) I'll definitely agree anytime someone wants to eat at Mossfire Grill in the future.

Greatest margaritas on the Riverside. Every Monday and Wednesday they are 2 for 1 and they will give you a quick and serious buzz. The burrito and the meatloaf are amazing. The service is fantastic in the upstairs seating area (inside or out). Love it.

Shrimp tacos and fire roasted salsa were amazing. Sidewalk seating is always a bonus for me. Great little place!

Great food, great service and great cookies. I will warn you though, parking can be difficult, if downright impossible at lunch. But it is worth the wait. My go to dishes here are Empanades, Fish Tacos and pork tacos (I forget the catchy name). I would recommend them all! If you have a sweet tooth, the oatmeal/chocolate cookies are devine and made on site. Service is always terrific and on cooler days you can enjoy sitting outside.

Never a dissapointing experience. Kyle and the rest of the bartenders upstairs are entertaining and friendly. The Southwestern menu is always delicious, and accommodating for the budget-conscious. I get skymiles through Delta for dining here as well (bonus!). I'd never dined outside until last night, I'll say it was a pleasant experience, sitting and watching the bar-crawlers at O'Brothers play cornhole, and talking to friendly strangers passing by. Mossfire serves a great brunch on Sundays, and their hours, as posted on their front door are "11 - Close".

Decent service and good burrito. Nothing special. Don't order the house margaritas. Very weak and an extra shot is $8!

  • Sandra B.

This place was a huge disappointment. The food was ok, but nothing great. They want to charge $1.50 for extra of their flavorless salsa. That's so tacky. The fried plantains weren't that great. Their guacamole was served brown. We had the meatloaf because one of the reviewers said it was amazing. It was mushy and tasted like it had an odd filler.

I've been to Mossfire several time before and always enjoyed it. No complaints for the last time I went. First ever time sitting on the balcony though. Very lovely. My opinion: Anything I have ever eaten here has been outstanding. The margaritas will make you scream "BAZ-ZING" for how good/strong they are. The appetizers are mouthwatering. The key lime pie was so fluffy and light. It still packs a punch with flavor though. The only downfall I've ever noticed is the service. It's never been fantastic but I suck it up so I can munch on the yummies.

We weren't that impressed. Maybe because we are used to California Mexican food. For how much it was for 2 tacos, (I think 12 bucks for 3 salmon hard tacos and around 8 or 9 for 2 soft tempeh tacos) they could at least get some tortillas and taco shells that weren't so obviously store bought. I liked that they offered tempeh and the atmosphere was fine. The salmon in the hard tacos was also tasty, but change the shells! Those were like Taco Bell shells. Get some real corn tortillas and fry them yourself please! We wouldn't come back except for maybe to try margarita Monday.

I was taken here by the gentleman I was in town seeing for business. I didn't realize it was Tex next until I got inside. I liked the salsa and chips they gave us. The salsa had good flavor and just enough spice. I had a chicken burrito and it was good also. Not the best I have ever had but for this kind of food in Florida I thought it was good.

I have had a love affair with the upstairs patio at Mossfire for many years now. It is one of the main reasons I eat here-in fact I have never eaten inside! EAT OUTSIDE-it's wonderful--unless I need a table, then please get up. I have only tried a few things: 1. Fish Tacos: Tuna-yes. Salmon, not so much. It just doesn't work for me. The tuna though has been excellent! 2. Chips + Salsa: Usually pretty good-worth $3.95? Debatable, but I get them anyway since I like to eat. 3. Taco Salad with Grilled Tuna: Oh my goodness, run for the hills, NO! The lettuce was doing the backstroke in this weird pool of grease-dressing in the bottom of the shell. I couldn't eat it, and i can eat most anything. I tried to salvage it by jazzing it up with some Bee Sting hot sauce, but no. 4. Goat Cheese Appetizer: It was OK. Like if you are craving goat cheese, go for it. I wouldn't get it again, would probably try something else. It wasn't bad, just not awesome. All the various drinks I have had from the bar are great too-if you don't know what you want they will gladly concoct something new for you! The wait staff here (upstairs) is always, consistently, wonderful. They are the nicest folks ever. I cannot say enough great things about them!!!! All in all, probably one of my favorite places in Jax.

I have been coming here for years and have never had a bad experience. The food is amazing and everything is extremely fresh. The staff is amazing and always on top of things and you'll also find this place is really clean. Some of my favorite menu choices are the shrimp tacos, burrito, goat cheese flat bread pizza, or caramelized onion quesadilla. Their hummus is pretty amazing as well.

Mossfire Grill is a great place to go to grab consistently good food with friends and family. There are quite a few vegetarian options. I like the tempeh burrito, but be warned that it is HUGE! I'm not really a big fan of the salsa that comes with the chips. It is very smoky flavored. The drinks are standard, nothing to brag about. The service is also pretty good and staff is generally very friendly and accomodating. Parking can be a bit of a pain at certain points during the day.

I found Mossfire hospitality excellent and the food fresh and tasty, Loved the grilled Maui special. Maybe the best pecan pit I have ever had. If the weather is nice, take a seat on the upstairs patio.

This place has a really chill vibe. It's kinda like a lounge downstairs with couches and a bar and larger dining space upstairs. It's great for a laid back dinner with friends. In order to spice things up a bit, we started with the chili fried plantains after being warned that they had a kick. When our server brought them to the table, they looked differently than I'd imagined. They were sliced thinly and fried hard so they were more like chips than the soft, chewy fried plantains that I was craving. But, they were pretty good. For dinner, I went with the chicken empanadas and they came out looking unique as well. Looking more like an egg roll than any empanada I've had in the past, I was skeptical. But, the flavors were outstanding! The black beans were also delicious and probably some of the best seasoned beans that I've had in a really long time. The rice was tasty as well. While the appearance of the food threw me for a bit, the tastiness of the offerings and the great service made this place alright with me.

I really like the nachos! And the fish tacos. Not the best I've ever had, but they're good and pretty consistent and not ungodly expensive. Sometimes its tough to get a table and the bar can get very crowded. Friendly staff. I love the upstairs deck on a pleasant afternoon with a good friend- nice and and unpretentious.

Small, well hidden gem in 5 points. Thoroughly enjoyed the food, service was good and staff were friendly. We had a late brunch and the place was very quiet and small on the inside but there is an upstairs area. Worth a return trip

I love Mosfire! The staff is friendly and the unique cuisine make this a great place to eat and relax. They have great drink specials including happy hour and margaritas on tap. When I go to Mosfire I always invite friends. We all agree relaxing upstairs on the couches is the place to be! I hope you enjoy Mosfire as much as we do!

This place is cool. In a town where everything else that's cool is moving to the beach, this place is a good reminder of how much fun 5 points used to be. The food is SouthWest inspired and light and the chips and salsa are incredible. I wish I could better articulate why I like this place so much. The ambience of this place lingers like a Sunday and it's only in hindsight that you realize how great this place is. Whenever I look back on my time spent in Jacksonville, I wish there were more times like the ones spent at the mossfire grill.

Something happened. The fish taco I had recently was not as good as the one I had a few months ago. The salmon was slightly overcooked with a hint of burnt. Also included were mexican cheese (yellow and white), and diced tomatoes. I felt it lacked the flavor it had last time. So, I ended up dousing it with more salsa this time. You can get the tacos with hard or soft shell. The hard shell looked like the generic kind you can get from taco bell. I guess I prefer it soft, and not hard (har har... getting my mind out the gutter now...). It comes with a side of black beans and rice. The rice was pretty plain, too. Wish it was yellow rice. On the good side, the fish taco still surpassed the nasty one I had in San Francisco. yelp.com/biz/san-francis… For dessert I had creme brulee with raspberry syrup drizzled and powdered sugar dusted on the plate. It had a surprise filling of raspberry jam, but it was not as smooth as creme brulee I had before. Aww....

I don't think I can repeat this enough but the upstairs patio is the main I reason I really like this place. In fact, I have never even eaten inside the restaurant. The staff upstairs have almost always been extremely friendly, funny, and helpful. I usually order fish tacos (blackened tuna only) or a burrito with chips and salsa. The food is typically good (not necessarily great) but one might argue that it is a bit bland. Actually, the food has somewhat grown on me and the mango habanero salsa and the Bee Sting hot sauce adds some flavor that might be otherwise missing. I have had mixed results the few times my wife or I strayed from the Specialty menu. It is a bit annoying that they charge for chips and salsa but the patio makes up for it. Unfortunately, the upstairs patio is not very big so once the weather turns nice it is hard to find an available table. I am going to give Mossfire Grill a 4 star rating with the caveat that I have been there enough to know what I like and the patio will make up for most minor annoyances.

First time there tonight. Had burger and cup of soup. Ordered burger medium - came well done. Tortilla soup was very good. Husband's quesadilla was very good. Waitress was very efficient.

Great service. Goat cheese appetizers excellent. "The Burrito" I ordered with tempeh - a rare and excellent vegetarian option. The habanero salsa inside was delicious and not as spicy as it sounded (though for me, that was a bad thing, easily remedied by the use of one of the many table hot sauces available).

Great food. Decent prices. Hit or Miss with Service. I've had GREAT experiences and I've had the disappearing server, where the last time you see them before the check was when you ordered. But I've also had the server that went out of their way to give outstanding service. I love the Grilled Veggie sandwich. If you are REALLY SUPER hungry go for a burrito. So good.

Mossfire is a great place all around - for location, for atmosphere, for food, for fun... you name it, they have pretty much nailed it. Mossfire is located in the Five Points neighborhood of Jacksonville, which is a notoriously hip and artistic part of town, and Mossfire fits right in. This Tex-Mex restaurant has an eclectic interior that makes dining here a lot of fun. My favorite place to hang out, be it for dining or just to grab some drinks, is upstairs. They have a nice bar up there, some amazing booths big enough for a large group, a few tables, and some couches surrounding a coffee table. It is really cosy and comfortable, but still chic and edgy. There is also an upstairs outdoor patio and some outdoor seating located out front and back, as well. The food is delicious and has always won high marks among locals. It is your traditional Tex-Mex fare [aka American inspired Mexican food]. My favorite is the Crab Cake Salad [$9.95 and also comes as a Sandwich], full of fresh veggies, a generous crab cake, and the Red Chili Vinaigrette is amazing. I also love the Smoked Pork Enchiladas [$8.95] and my husband loves the Meatloaf [$11.95] -he is basically addicted to meatloaf, and Mossfire's is no exception. You can definitely order a few appetizers [or even just one] and make a meal of it, but don't discount the salads or entrees... come to think of it, pretty much everything they offer is awesome. Never had a bad experience. This is a signature Jacksonville hangout, so if you are looking to eat where the locals eat, this is a great choice!

I've seen people get the quesadilla before, and it always looked so tasty. Well, I got it and it was. Otherwise, nothing much else has changed, so I still we give this place only 3 stars. They need to fix their chips and salsa... how hard is that?

This place isn't what it used to be, but I had a perfectly nice meal here. I ordered the hummus sandwich - a fun thing to see on a menu. I don't think Mossfire is to be avoided but I don't think it's worth bookmarking.

I brought some New York friends here, because it's not a chain and it's in a "cute" part of town. Was disappointed and kinda embarrassed! At least we caught a buzz off the margaritas.

  • Sarah C.

Perhaps I have become a food snob, perhaps I have not, but Mossfire is not the same as it used to be. Maybe moving to NYC has sharpened my pallet, but it doesn't take a culinary genius to know when a tortilla chip is stale - and a whole bowl of stale tortillas? Maybe I should have had a couple of margaritas first. I loved Mossfire 6 years ago, but I believe it has seen its day. In fact, I'm afraid that they may need an inspection by the health department; the place smelled moldy and the food did not taste fresh. Finally, the waitress last night was really weird. She was nice enough, but she was strange. In all, I'm not impressed anymore and when visiting Jacksonville, I will not go back. S~

Great selection on draft. The fish tacos were very good, smoked pork enchiladas were a little dry, but tasty. You can't go wrong with some Rouge Dead Guy on draft with some fish tacos.

We enjoyed our light dinner at Mossfire Grill, and would return for a casual bite and beverage. I really enjoyed the crabcake appetizer, and coconut shrimp, plus the house margarita was a good happy hour deal (pint glass at $3). The chips were OK, but the house salsa had a nice smoky flavor. The LDC liked the vegetarian green chile, and the hummus, but she wasn't big on the fried flatbread that came with it. The upstairs indoor dining area was a cozy place, from the booth anyway. They have some couches near the flat-screen and a couple other TVs over the bar. Not a bad place to catch a game if you're on that side. There's also an outdoor balcony with a few tables that's probably nice in the right weather (and if you're a smoker). Service was good and friendly. And we have a new addition to our "Best of Jax 2008 - Wacky Waitresses" list. Recommended.

Of my last four trips to mossfire my last one was the best experience. I still don't get them or their concept. The chips still had some stale pieces. They mixed the old and the new together. The food seemed generally fresh, unlike my past experiences, but it's their flavor profile that I take issue with now. I like different but misfire, pun intended, seems to relish in conflicting flavor profiles to make something new and interesting. I've yet to be amazed with this place.

Really great southwestern food. They have a bar upstairs and covered outside seating. I would have given 5 stars but the wait staff is a bit slow and inattentive. I am an easy-to-please customer but if I have to ask another waiter for a refill on water after 20 min of waiting that's not good. Outside of that the restaurant and food are truly superb.

The upstairs dining area is the place to be at Mossfire! We had good service, great food and an upbeat atmosphere. The complimentary chips and salsa were welcomed; the chile plaintains--lots of heat; my brie and caramelized onions quesadilla with bacon added (Server's suggestion) were perfect with the side of chipotle apple butter. Still fun and food is overall better than the time of my last review.

I've been by many times. It's fairly close to me, but I would drive to regardless. For the longest time I always ordered the "Mayport Shrimp and Chicken." I didn't want to mess with greatness, or be dissapointed in the rest of the menu. I've ordered off that item now, and I've been impressed. My only complaint is the wetness and mess of the pork wrap, but other than that, a fantastic place.

This is my favorite mexican/tex-mex/southwestern fusion (still trying to find the right word) food place in Jax by far. I have a hard time ordering anything but the Chicken Empanadas but when I've tried other things (like the fish tacos) they were delicious too. It's also a fun place to go for happy hour upstairs inside or on the patio.

Yum! This place was awesome for lunch. I had the Adobe Chicken Sandwich with fries. The chipotle lime mayo was delicious. My friend had some kind of shrimp dish that was also very tasty. The waitress was attentive and very friendly. When I am back in the area, I will come back for sure.

Mossfire is one of those places with an awesome history that used to be great, but lately is not so good. What has changed? My last two visits there have been weird. Drink service from Sam upstairs is always great but I've had two meals now over the last few months, both carelessly prepared. Once was a quesadilla where the beans and rice were quite obviously either microwaved or heated up in a very uneven way. No big deal, one relatively minor miss. The other day I showed up and was greeted by a lady who sat me and then walked away. I asked her if I could have a beer and she said she'd "have XXXXX help you." This struck me as off, until I realized that it was the owner, which only made it even more awkward. Then I got my burger on which the flavorless patty, the bun, and the bacon was burnt. Beyond the obvious miss on the burger, it had a mayonnaise packet on the plate. I don't expect fru fru treatment, but this entire experience was so off the mark, I would be embarrassed to take an out of town friend here. I accepted the bill and gave the feedback to the server, tipped her well (service was great) and then paid full price for relatively easy to prepare food that totally missed the mark. No offer to make it right. Service was really good but it's frustrating to give feedback and deal with lofty treatment from the owner. I don't think I'll be back. With so many new options in the area, why bother.

Located right smack dab on the edge of Five Points, just a few steps down Margaret St., you'll find Mossfire Grill. A bit of trivia - The center point of the Great Fire of 1901 that destroyed most of Jax., was a company called Cleveland Fiber Factory. They dried and processed tree moss which was used to stuff mattresses of the day. Guess where the Great fire started? If you guessed Five Points....WRONG! They just borrowed a name from Jacksonville's history. I've heard others refer to the food here as Tex-Mex and I'm here to tell you unequivocally, it's no where close. It's not even Mexican, except for the use of words like taco, quesadilla, tostada and guacamole printed on the menu. By my estimation and experience, it's southwestern fusion, somewhere between Albuquerque and Palm Springs. Ambiance is that of a rustic yet warm boat house. If it were sitting over a body of water, you'd expect to get fine seafood here. Well, water not withstanding, the seafood is very good here. We both started by ordering margaritas and munched on complementary chips and salsa. Again, the salsa was SW-tern with what they termed "blackened tomatoes", but I didn't see them. I did detect a roasted/chipotle predominance and my imagination prompted me to order a dish of guac to mix with it. WOW was that good...BTW, the margaritas were superb too. Our Entrees - My date wanted to order the Salmon and I agreed it looked like a good pick, (we were going to sample each others), but then we heard the house special. It was pan grilled grouper covered with a mango/pineapple chutney with chile peppered cheesy mashed potatoes and veggies. I ordered the Mossfire Crab cakes and they lived up to their namesake. The grouper was unforgettable. Flaky, moist, mild and with just the right touch of a searing brown presentation. She also loved her vegetable medley and mashed taters The crab cakes were encased in a crunchy brown crust and contained a lite creamy mixture of minced blue crabmeat, garlic, bellpepers and onion. The taste of the crab came through and even rose above the corn salsa covering them. They were, to this crab aficionado, A-OK but not remarkable. To make them remarkable, introduce larger chunks of crab and charge more it that's what it takes. I didn't like the mashed taters as much as I anticipated I would. They were a bit dry for my taste and need more chiles, and little more kick. Ambiances - 2 Stars I have to deducted one star because there were some miscreants sitting on the sofas watching a football game yelling obscenities. One individual felt the need to yell, " no f**king way", "you f**king idiots" and "why the f**k did they do that?" at the top of his lungs. Likewise, no one should have to tolerate this while trying to have a nice dinner and conversation. Note to football fans, 'they can't hear you.' Menu - 4 Stars. Many other items I'd like to try. Margaritas - 4 Stars Grouper - 5 Stars Crab cakes - 3 Stars Service - 2 Stars. Although Tracy was attentive, she telegraphed a bit of an attitude when she first came to our table. After about 15 minutes, she popped by and asked us, "they haven't brought your food yet?" Well no Tracy, we haven't ordered yet. We were talking and eating our chips and were in no big hurry, but she had a diffident blond moment but she was not blond. Oh, and I had ordered a glass of water that she forgot to bring, but when she did, she plopped it down on the table next to us as she passed by. I had to reach over and retrieve it. No biggie but a cumulative thing. Desert - NY Cheesecake - 5 Stars. Just as Julie said, it's real NY alright. If you look up 'WOW' in the dictionary, you'll see an interjection, a verb but under noun, there's a picture of this cheesecake. This equals 3.7 Stars but I'll give em the balance to 4 because of nice smiles and friendly staff down stairs. And the fact I'd go back - Cheese Cake baby.

I probably should not rate any Tex-Mex restaurant's since I really don't like this kind of food, but hey I once said I don't like Thai food either, and found a great experience eating it here in Jax....but this place first of all is not very clean, and the waitstaff is crude, and the food is noting to rave about to my taste. Drinks are just OK, and I have no clue why many other Yelpers like this place. Someone else offered to take me here at their expense; so what the heck I went. Taco bell is better at 1/3'rd the price. I did find it an interesting story as to how/why them named it Moss Fire.

Mossfire is a great place for Friday night! Upstairs is the bar area but they serve a full menu upstairs as well. There are drink specials and they do a Southern-Mexicana style food. I can't stop ordering the pecan chicken! It really is fantastic. You get chips and salsa when you sit down but trust me get an appetizer, may I suggest the plantains perfect with beer but watch out as the mango salsa will set your mouth on fire!!! I think the guys like to order it just to prove their manhood with the heat factor....but trust me it's good just have the beer or water handy!

Love this place. The seafood is always fresh and if you work in the area, Wednesday is meatloaf day but you have to show up before noon or its usually sold out by then. I used to go to this place multiple times a week when i worked in Jacksonville... I miss it now that I'm not in the area anymore :(

Good comfortable restaurant. The hubby and I like to go there occasionally for a couple of beers and fish tacos. Casual. We always sit upstairs in either the booths, the leather sofas, or outside (if nice and no smokers). Would i drive across town for it? No. Would I choose it over other restaurants in the Riverside area if in the area? Definitely.
