Hubby had just gotten back from 2 weeks in Korea. We were actually going to eat Taco's but the place was closed. So as we are driving, we see a huge neon KOREAN BBQ sign so we decided to pull in. We sat at one of the 4 or 5 grill tables. It wasn't crowded, and one was available, and I would definitely recommend YOU sit at a grill table too. What good is a Korean BBQ without the grill? It's part of the fun! Our waiter was super nice and recommended the beef rib plates for our BBQ. He brought us a bunch of side dishes with different types of veggies: kimchi, green onion, soy paste, mung bean sprouts, kelp relish, daikon radish and carrots, sliced garlic and jalapenos. And a large plate of fresh romain lettuce and 2 bowls of rice in its own covered bowl. About the rice: Sticky rice just like I make. That sure did have my approval! We ordered a short rib-like meat, has the bone like a short rib that is about 3 inches wide and flat, which has a long piece of beef stuck to it because the meat is wrapped around the bone a few times. 4 on a plate. We think when we ordered 2, it was 2 whole orders enough to feed 4-6 people. Oops! Our guy cuts off the meat from the bone with FISKARS! Places it on the grill and just like that, you're cooking it! And you flip the steak, which is fairly thin. And then once it's near done, you pick it up with tongs and start cutting pieces off with the fiskars. Yep, another use for fiskars! Luckily hubby just came back from Korea, so he was quite the expert with the meat cutting. Hubby also adds the garlic slices and the jalapenos to the grill to char them. And once the meat is cooked to your liking, you scoot it off to the side of the grill so you don't burn it to a crisp. But don't forget the char! Then hubby expertly picks up a piece of romaine lettuce, break it in about a 2 inch piece. In the well of the lettuce, he adds bean paste, rice, meat and the other stuff. Kinda like a lettuce taco, but with the Korean sides. Then you pop it in your mouth as hubby said that's what the Korean businessmen did when he tagged along. That's why you do small pieces of lettuce and cut the beef into smaller bite sized pieces. I was definitely happy that I was dining with an expert! Then, the guy comes back and brings this very spicy boiling pot, in its own pot holder, of a Korean styled miso soup with tofu and jalapenos. When the guy said it was HOT, it really was....soup was still boiling in its own cast iron pot. Jalapenos added a nice bit of heat also. Our guy returns and asks us if we want our bones cooked? Sure, we say. So he takes them to the kitchen and returns with them a few mins later. They are delish! The meat had shrunk around the short rib and it has got a marinade on it with a slight char. We took them home with the leftover pieces of beef. One of the most enjoyable meals I've eaten in Jacksonville! What a treat! Keep in mind that this is not a fancy to-do type of place. The walls in the semi-private grill rooms needed a little makeover. It could have been brighter, but the bulb was out in our booth. Other diners in the other grill rooms were happily cooking and eating, just like us. On a side note: Being part Asian myself, I always see how many other natives frequent their own restaurants. That is always a good sign and there are a few asian restaurants that we frequent that have alot of their own eating in their restaurants. This Korean restaurant was no different. This establishment had a large group of Korean men in the back room whooping it up! According to hubby tho, that is how they talk normally! Loud and excited. Almost sounded like they were yelling at each other. But hubby assured me that they were speaking normal. Our waiter returned with the check and confirmed our initial assumption: we DID order two whole BBQ's for 2 each! So next time, we'll just have to make sure it's just one order for 2. But leftovers sure will be eaten! Will recommend this restaurant to my friends!

The japchae noodles, short ribs and the squid dish is really good. They have five dishes that are good. They have a bbq grill you can cook the meat if you have two or more people. Since it was me, they cooked it in the kitchen grill. The ribs tasted good and fresh. I would recommend to come to this place.

Honestly, great. I am from the west coast and am used to really good KBBQ, and Sam Won really didn't disappoint. Yes - I've had better. But you can never go wrong with japchae, cast iron bibimbap, and bulgogi. This is a great spot to satisfy your KBBQ craving - and there really aren't that many joints in Jax, so I'll be back Sam Won! :)

The food here is sooo delicious! The japchae was exactly what I have come to expect. Full of noodles, veggies, Delicious flavor and a very good portion. The dolsot bibimbap was a bit strange with a bunch of romain lettuce on top and its the first time I have ever been served dolsot with lettuce on top. So I would definitely tell them no lettuce if that's weird for you too. The LA Kalbi was pretty tasty but I felt that the portions were a bit small and what I have pictured is two orders. We also got the jumulreok and felt the taste was lacking. But everything else was tasty that we weren't too disappointed. The service was good and our server was quick when I spilled some water all over myself (oops :-/) the atmosphere does feel very cold and definitely not as welcoming as the "other" place. Honestly I would give this place 3.5 stars but for now I'll do 4 since we left happy. Overall I would definitely come back here and eat :-)

We just moved here from Honolulu where Korean BBQ is so ono (delicious)! We heard of this place and thought we would try it out. We asked for a table that has a grill so we could grill our own meat the way we like it. There were tables with no grills as well. We sat down and ordered our favorite meats and chicken, which we thought took a long time to bring out. We noticed that the server who took our order did not turn on the grill, which is usually done to make it ready to prepare to grill. 20 minutes later, the server brought 4 platters of cooked meats to our table. We had asked for a grill table and told her we like to cook our own. They also have a policy in their restaurant that the grill tables are only for people who grill their own. The server was very surprised that we didn't understand they cook the meat in the kitchen. We all just sat there while she left to get us plates............................................................There we sat, staring at dried out meat that looked shredded from what animal, I do not know. It sort of looked like liver/elephant skin and had a grey tint. We sat and watched our "food" getting cold without being able to eat because we had no plates. My son, who works in a restaurant, finally got up and went to the kitchen to get our plates. He was informed by the server who never returned that, she said she would get them. At the end of the meal, which went pretty quick with lots of left overs, we were provided take home containers made out of thin Styrofoam which proceeded to leak all over my husband and my car on our drive home. We had to pull over to throw the leftovers in the trash (guess the neighbor dog wont be getting grey liver/elephant meat). To top it all off, the 4 of us eating was over $100!!!!!!!!! Worst meal I have had in a long time and the service was awful. We did notice a place across the street when we were driving away whose sign read, "Happy Time Los Amigos Korean Food". I mean, Los Amigos may have done a better job at Korean than Sam Won. Dare we try it? I just informed my husband I was leaving this review. He informed me that he mentioned his to his bank manager today about how awful our meal was, and said he had the worst Korean BBQ ever. The banker said, "where did you go, Sam Won's?" Live and learn.

When you want to eat Bulgogi you are extremely limited in options in this city. I think there are only two places in town. I've tried both and they both are just OK. The only difference besides location is the customer service. And both places are hit and miss. Portion sizes are huge. Location is much closer to work so it's easier to grab something on the way home. Portion sizes are too big to try to complete during lunch. And they are much slower in service. But the food quality is still pretty good. My issue here...Marinate was a little too sweet. (I'm use to the spicy savory sweetness of the meat, but this was just too much sugar not enough ginger and pepper). I've had this a couple of times and the recipes remains the same, so I'm assuming this is standard. Not bad, I've just had better.

I have to say the past 2 times we were there. The food had got better and better. Prices are still consider a bit high. But at least we enjoy the food and service. Love their food, very authentic and tasty. The japchae was a bit plain (please see the picture). Wish they put more ingredients into the dish. Will go back for more authentic Korean food.

My husband and I are big Korean food fans. When we go out of town that is the first thing we research. We have had several friends that are Korean so we know good authentic food! This is the only place we have found in Jacksonville that delivers. There is one server (I wish I knew her name) that knows her stuff...she is awesome! I always get kimchi sun du bu and well not everywhere wants to make it for me...she hooked it up!!!! She had the kitchen make it exactly how I wanted! My husband loves bulgogi and there's is pretty good! A few things I wish were different: They require a minimum amount (I think 2 meals) to sit at the grill tables. My hubs wants bulgogi on the grill and I always eat soup so we never sit at the grill pans here :( Also, they don't have a huge selection of banchan. I love trying different things and this last visit I think we only had 4 things and one was jello...eewww! And last...no red bean ice cream or boba!!!!! What the what!!!!!!????!! Not good! Even with all that said I gave them a 4! I'm just happy we have a Korean place in town so we can get a fix when we need it!

Best Korean BBQ in this part of Florida!! The staff and food are great, we ordered 2 items from the grill so we could do it ourselves. The beef items were well seasoned and prepared! My wife also had the chem che soup which she loves!

First time having more than a small bento style box of Korean food, and we have a winner! Been wanting to try real Korean forever, but each time I tried, the place was closed. Luckily on Labor Day this place was open. We were easily and quickly seated, given drinks and able to order an appetizer (mandu pan fried)within ten or less minutes. Server was super kind and friendly, as first timers suggested the #23 or #22(?) where you can choose 4 meats, have rice, veg and kimchi. We chose the LA Galbi beef short ribs, the shrimp, the BBQ chicken and spicy pork. This easily over fed two ppl, so it'd be perfect for 2-4 people EASILY. The price of all this with an app and two drinks was $58 with tax. Which felt a bit expensive but there was a ton of food so it's priced about right. My faves were the Galbi and spicy pork, mike says his top two meats were the chicken and shrimp. I walked out with a pleasantly full belly and can foresee frequenting this place in the future. Way to go, Sam Won! There were all kinds of drink specials and many other things on their menu I look fwd to trying and sharing with friends.

After visiting another local KBBQ joint, I decided to change my rating for Sam Won and bump it back up to a four star. (I know, I can't seem to make up my mind on what rating I'm going to give this place. Hopefully they can earn back my five star, but I don't have any high hopes...) If you want consistent KBBQ, come to Sam Won. The staff is hit or miss. Sometimes they're awesome & sometimes I feel like a burden, which is why I downgraded them from a five star to a three star. But I always love their banchan and kalbi. I tried another place and it honestly didn't even compare to Sam Won, so until a new KBBQ place opens up -- this will be my go to for KBBQ cravings.

My Husband and I just had lunch there and unfortunately after we finished eating there was a small roach crawling on the wall next to our table. I flagged the waitress down and she got another guy to come and get the bug. So grossed out. Up until then my experience wasn't the worst. The bathroom is in disrepair though - the faucet handle came off while washing my hands. I wouldn't go back.

This was a struggle to rate. On one hand, I am super happy there is a Korean BBQ place in town. But like others have mentioned, it's hard not to compare it to the "other" place in town... So speaking of which, we had fasted all day to enjoy an unabashed meat fest. We strolled up to our destination and our hearts fell. They were unexpectedly closed for a few days for the holidays. Any other type of restaurant just wasn't going to cut it (our hearts and stomachs were set on all the meats) and I did recall another Yelper had mentioned Sam Won to me quite a few months ago... And we headed there with a quickness. It's a little hard to find, and smack dab in the middle of the big strip mall on University. Sam Won is a bit of an older restaurant, with some little quirks here and there (and the funky old restaurant smell) but it didn't really bother us. We were seated quickly, perused the menu, and made our selections. The grill was prepped and we were informed they needed to cook the pork belly on a different grill, on a table close to ours. Cool. We did start out with a seafood pancake, that was pretty good! A little on the lighter side, texture-wise, but it had good flavor and only a few bites where the seafood tasted just a tad fishy. The usual sides were a little bit lacking, but they were generous when we asked for a little bit more kimchi. :) We had about 4 different types of meat, and they were all pretty good, but were missing a bit of flavor and spice that we have experienced elsewhere. Pros: Large space, grills at the booths, good food. Cons: Just missing the mark on some spices, for our taste. All in all, I'd head to the other place in town for our next Korean BBQ outing, unless we had a really large party, then this would probably be the best option. And would not mind headed back here!

Yummmm....thats what we left saying from our first trip to try Korean BBQ. The restaurant is in a little strip mall off University def nothing special from the outside but inside it is small and comfortable ( with a Karaoke stage too) and I was pleased to see quite a few people in here when we arrived at 12:30 on a Tues. The food!!! We didnt get too crazy being first time here but we tried the lunch special of Galbi - Beef short ribs sliced thin marinated in a delish sweet sauce then grilled and Galbi and Shrimp- same as above with poor little shrimp overcooked to the death, i still ate them but they were very chewy..............the lunch special comes with: white or fried rice, salad, noodles, 2 fried dumplings.....everything was wonderful, yes and the dumplings were so good my husband ordered another order for himself! We were both full and happy and the lunch specials were around $8 and $12 so pretty reasonable for the amount and yummyness of the food Something that confused me was I didnt see any grill tables ( where you would cook the food at your own table) maybe only for dinner? But that sounds fun and I would like to try it!

Came here with my Fiancè, his sister, sister's husband and their daughter, craving for some Korean! Came here a few times in past before yelping. It wasn't busy on a Monday night (which is good). We were greeted and sat around the grill table because we wanted to grill the meats ourselves. We ordered 2 LA Kalbis, Seasoned Beef, and 2 Dolsot Bibimbap and Japchae. The Japchae was pretty good. Seasoned nicely, noodles were soft, and veggies cooked well. A bit greasy, but wasn't that bad. The sides and Dolsot bibimbap came out along with the raw meat. The server placed it on the grill (which was nice of her, but we really wanted to grill it ourselves). As we start to flip it over and move it around, she came by wanting to do it for us, but we told her that it's alright, we can cook it, we got it. She insisted, but the point for us to sit at the grill is to cook the meats ourselves. We've done it plenty of times. The only thing about this grill is that it mainly cooks in the middle (because that's where the flame is at) which I do not really like because it takes longer to cook. You can only fit like maybe 3 strips to have it cooked all the way, the fire wasn't that big. Because the grill platform has spaces, it doesn't cook in its own "juice". It just falls through and basically grill it dry than moist.... So, we let it sit there a bit and of course when you let it sit there too long it burns. That is why I prefer a flat grilled platform where it can cook in its own juice to keep that moist and flavor. Overall, the meats came out okay, mostly dry and a bit flavorless. I was expecting more, but the way the grill is set-up its kind of difficult. And it seems like they didn't marinate it that well or just didn't put enough... I enjoyed the side dishes more than the meats. I wasn't really all excited anymore. It was kind of a let down. Maybe next time it can get better. My experience wasn't what I thought it would be...

With only a couple places in Jacksonville that specialize in Korean BBQ it's hard not to compare them. Honestly, our group had set out to have dinner at Hon Korean, but when we failed to confirm if they would be open the week of Christmas we had to do some quick thinking on our feet and come up with something else. Sam Won popped up and it wasn't too far away. Score! I appreciated the semi-private cooktops. And I actually liked that they did a majority of the cooking for you. However, we learned the crispy pork belly is not worth the order since you have to order two portions of it. The seafood pancake was delicious and I could have easily had that as my meal. But we were all looking forward to eating all the meats that we had saved room in our belly to do so. Our table shared shared the samkyupsal (pork belly), bulgogi (beef) and kalbi (shortribs). It was all so good and we could have eaten all the meats for days. Depending on what you choose to compare, Hon vs. Sam is going to be a pretty even fight. Definitely will have to give them both a few more tries before I pick a winner.

I'm not sure what the dish I had was called, but it was seafood and rice in a clay pot and was absolutely delicious! Once I let the lava cool down I could actually taste it lol. I literally can not wait to get back here for a bento box for lunch!

So, I went to Sam Won last Friday for lunch and thought it was darn good. Just to make sure I thought I should go again today. It's official....THIS PLACE IS AWESOME! As soon as you walk in the restaraunt, you know there's some authentic cooking going on here. We were quickly greeted and seated upon arrival and the place was pretty darn packed. The staff was quick to take our drink and food orders. These ladies don't give off the warm and fuzzy vibe, but hey they are there to get a job done and that's just what they do. On Friday, I ordered the bulgogi beef lunch box. This included sliced pieces of marinated rib eye, fried or steamed rice, salad, noodles, dumplings and a piece of fruit. I swear the box reminds me of one of those school lunch trays we had waaaayyy back in the day when I was in school. The marinated rib eye was extremely flavorful and tender. I was very pleased and would definitely order this lunch box again. Today I decided on the BBQ Galbi. I saw this dish come out last Friday and thought, I gotta have it. This was a hit! The ribs were thinly sliced, marinated with their special sauce and grilled to perfection. In addition to the fried rice, salad, dumplings, noodles and fruit I left extremely full. I can't say enough about this place. It really is a treat and well worth the price. I will definitely return again and again with or without friends. I'm even thinking of coordinating a UYE with the Yelp Fam in the near future at this establishment. Lord knows they have the room for it.

I was craving Kimchi Tofu Soup (otherwise known as soondubu jjigae) so that is what I ordered here. The dish was a perfect blend of chunky custardy tofu in a cauldron of fiery goodness that infused delicious deep flavors and spices. It was served in the traditional fashion at the table boiling hot in its cooking vessel with an egg cracked in the middle. This healthy dish full of vegetables and protein warms the belly and satiates the palate. And although it's not the best I've had, their version was pretty darn close to the ones I've had in K-Town in L.A.. Go get you some. :)

This place is awesome, cannot wait to go back and show my husband this great find. My good friends invited me for lunch last Friday it was amazing. I had the bulgogi an expanded combo meal - a healthy one. Rice, Salad with amazing sweet ginger dressing, dumplings, shredded tenderized meat with vegetables...it had it all, even a piece of fruit for dessert.

I went on a Saturday. I had my usually dolsol bim bim bap. It was good as I expected , however my friends got bulgogi . It was extremely sweet. Normally we could eat the entire dish but we only ate 4 pieces of very beef and called it quits because of the over loaded sugar content. Not sure what went wrong that day. We didn't want to be rude so we didn't ask them to make a new one. My friend just ate the rice and side dishes. Maybe it would be better during the week days. Maybe idk

I absolutely love this hidden gem. I have been for lunch many times and the lunch specials are all delicious, with large portions and the price is just right. I have never been for dinner, until tonight. I had been dying to try the BBQ tables. We started with the steamed Mandu and a small order of the jap chae. The Mandu were wonderful and the portion was generous. The Jap Chae was my husbands favorite. We ordered the Sam Won Combo special and ordered the galbi, bulgogi, jumulreok and spicy pork. The galbi and the jumulreok (seasoned beef) were our favorite. The sesame oil, pepper, salt dipping sauce for the beef was addictive. We will most likely order a combo of galbi and the jumulreok next time. All the banchan were delicious. Don't forget to ask for the Korean hot sauce, that's a must!! The staff was super friendly and there is no doubt we will return.

Came for dinner and pleasantly surprised by quality of what we ordered. The tangsuyuk (sweet and sour beef) and dol sot bibimbap were highlights. A few of the side dishes didn't seem as fresh but they probably don't get the volume of clients other korean restaurants in larger cities get. Will certainly come back and try the BBQ. Definitely recommend!

The food is good here and it is reasonably priced. However, I learned that their meats are precooked and so were some of the meals. So that makes me wonder if they stick it in the microwave and then serve it. The staff there were helpful and attentive.

I have visited Sam Won numerous times. I loved each visit. Sometimes when there are a lot of people dining, the servers get a little flustered and forget to bring you things like straws or an extra place settings. But since I guess I'm a familiar face here, service is good. One time I felt bad for a couple sitting next to us because their server was terrible!! Fortunately, I had only seen him only once. Their food is great! I love the Kalbi, Bimbimbap, and Bulgogi. I am a fan of Korean marinated beef. I try to make it at home, but it never turns out the same. Sooo, I keep coming back!!

This inconspicuous strip mall located restaurant, offers a good Korean BBQ menu and a friendly staff. I can't say it's the best Kalbli I ever had, but given this is Jacksonville, it's worth coming back. They also advertise sushi and karaoke... but you want to stick with the Korean BBQ menu and sit at a grill, or else you'll be missing the point. Not a busy place, almost sad.

This is pretty much the only place to go in Jacksonville for Korean food, but it's so good! I used to be such a picky eater when i lived in Jacksonville and they always worked with me to create something I'd like. I've never had bad food from there, and I've never had bad service. They stay open pretty late and know how to have a good time. I felt like family everytime i went there (and i'm not Korean). They even played songs that i requested on my birthday! The prices are always what I feel they should be in a Korean restaurant and the chef is very passionate about Korean cuisine. Now that I live in Dallas, TX, there are so many options when it comes to Korean restaurants, but I always still miss this place.

Found them using the Urbanspoon App on my phone. I ordered the short ribs and they were awesome. I don't remember the name of the dish my husband ordered, but it was tasty as well. They don't advertise it on the dinner menu, but you can get the lunch special at night. Which is great, because it is half the price of the dinner plates. Good place. It's worth trying out.

I was born and raised in Korea and I recently moved to Savannah where there's not even decent Korean restaurant. When I go to Korean restaurant, I order something I can't cook. I happened to be in Jacksonville with my friend (Korean as well) and I was craving some spicy food. My friend told me Samwon is pretty authentic and this is how I got to try this place. So I decided to order champong (jampong) and daegu-sal jjim as recommended by a friendly server. Yes.... It was totally worth it! Daegu-sal jjim was a bit expensive to order for lunch(like 36 for two?), the portion was huge and delish. Huge chunks of Daegu were fried and stir fried with bean sprouts and spicy sauce. Champong was super good too. It's basically spicy seafood noodle soup. It had the smoky seafood flavored broth and I felt like I was in Korea. Banchan was nothing special and it was just okay. After we were done eating, we still had almost half of daegu-sal jjim left. We each got to-go boxes and filled it up, and the server came up to ask if we want some more banchan to pack with it. How nice! Oh, they have really good selection of Korean beverage menu from non-alcoholic to alcoholic, even Korean beer!!! I got Hite (wish they had Cass though). Overall I loved it. It wasn't that expensive, the portion was good, food was excellent, and server was so friendly. I def recommend this place and I will try to go more often as possible =) Btw I do not understand people rating so low after they order something which is not authentic Korean food. Yes, I get that whether it's korean or not, it's important to make taste good. But seriously you guys are missing out! Duhh, It's like going to authentic French, Thai or whatever restaurant and ordering a burger and fries, because you're not sure what to get or scared to try something new. I'm telling you, order something like legit Korean food. If you don't know or not sure, ask them!!!

Go to Hon Korean instead. This place is awful, it was very clear we were being ignored. sides were not brought out in time so they could save money (untraditional for a real korean restaurant) our drinks were refilled after we had finished our meal. the table next to us seemed to have gotten extra side dishes because they were... let's just say "regulars". I was offended. Food is greasy and sub par compared to Hon Korea. Not as authentic.

My son and his South Korean girlfriend took us here for dinner when he came home from being stationed over there. We had the BBQ chicken, bulgogi and spicy pork. The inside of the restaurant was clean and smelled great. The waitress was very friendly and helpful, especially after she realized we had a native Korean with us. This was our first time eating Korean food and we found it all delicious, including the complimentary condiments (ranging from tart to spicy). My son's girlfriend said it was all pretty much traditional, but she did say it was strangely sweet to her taste buds and she surmised that the recipes might have been altered to conform more to American tastes. I was a bit shocked at the price and the large amount of food served. It wasn't until afterwards that our friend told us that most of the dinners were portioned for 2 people, not just one. Oops. I enjoyed it enough to go again, but will be ordering smarter next time.

I really liked Sam Won Garden. Much like Caron, I hate to compare it to Hon but since there are only two Korean restaurants in town I feel like the comparisons are inevitable. We started out with a seafood pancake and steamed dumplings. I've never met a dumpling I didn't like, and these were no exception. Very tasty. The seafood pancake was a little more dense than I'm used to, I would give it a 3/5 where Hon's was as good as I've probably ever had. The banchan were ok. There were a few types of picked radish, some broccoli and of course Kimchi. I did like the Kimchi a lot here. Our server was awesome, as he helped us cook two orders of pork belly and kept the sochu flowing. The pork belly was delicious and crispy. We also had short ribs and bbq chicken. The short ribs were on point and were my favorite. The bbq chicken was a real star too. I don't usually order chicken because it tends to be bland and uninteresting but this was juicy and packed with flavor. The biggest things that stood out about Sam Won relative to it's competition is how much nicer the interior is and how great the servers are. The tables and decor are a lot nicer than Hon, and our waiter could not have been nicer. Parking is plentiful because it's in a strip mall.

My coworkers were raving about this place and they invited me to have lunch with them. When I first walked in the restaurant, I was like, "Man, this place kinda smell funky." How will the food taste? I ordered the Grilled Chicken BBQ lunch box special. It came with grilled boneless chicken breast chunks, fried rice (steam rice if you prefer), fried dumplings, ginger salad, fruit, sushi, and noodles in a bento box. They give generous portions and the food was flavorful. Someone let me sample their bbq Kalbi and that too was delicious. For the low price and the amount of food you get, I will definitely come back. I will order the Kalbi next time. It's just the smell when you first walk in the door that bothers me, but I got used to it and the tasty food will definitely offset that.

This restaurant serves authentic Korean food including the Korean intensity for spices that can scald your mouth but you enjoy anyway. You get to be entertained by Korean music videos showcasing breakups and sadness it gets boring. The food is great. The place clean...cozy and private at the BBQ booths. We got pork BBQ and Seafood noodle soup. It would have been nice to have more pieces of octopus in the soup. I have before and after pics of my soup. Still a great place to come when craving for Korean food.

I have been a regular customer at Sam Won for years and continue to go there with I crave some Korean food. It is slightly over price for their Korean short ribs but still has a great flavor. I would give them a higher score but the environment and cleanliness does not match the price. I would recommend their seafood pancake and noodle appetizer. If you are need to Korean dishes, I would highly recommend their short ribs or spicy pork. It would take some time for newer people to get used to the side dishes but I love Kim Chi. To me, Sam Won is the best in Town.

My food pallet loves variety and i love almost all foods. However I wasn't a big fan of Sam Won's side dishes that came out. I think three of them were cabbage. I love cabbage but not in this preparation. My prior experience with Korean food from a jar, is that it's a personal taste issue and not the fault of the chef. I ordered the BBQ chicken, which was chunks of thigh meat, piled in a large quantity on top of onions. While it was "good" because of the grilled taste, it simply just tasted like grilled chicken. At home, I make boneless chicken thighs with Korean bulgi BBQ sauce (pork style sauce), and was hoping for that flavor. But instead found the chicken to have no taste but grilled taste. So I added some hot sauce and soy sauce from the table and was much better when I asked for shrimp sauce to dip it in. I was hoping they would have an uncooked BBQ sauce to dip it in but she said they couldn't provide that since the chicken marinated in it (what about fresh...?). So because of my lack of education and experience with Korean food and personal tastes, I'll rate this place higher than I enjoyed it. My friend did enjoy his rice bowl but he was disappointed that the egg was fully cooked. Maybe they always fully cook the egg but he wasn't asked how he wanted it cooked. The service provided was good.

Okay, let's get the typical "I'm a food expert because.." reasoning out of the way. I lived in South Korea for two years in Jeollanamdo-Gwangju (the city known for its cuisine). This place is solely OK. Being that we live in Jacksonville (one of the most uncultured cities in the US), this Korean restaurant is brave for even existing! The menu is off-the-charts expensive and the food is merely meh. The banchan or side dishes are incredibly disappointing and the soups, meats, stews and BBQ is again, ok. I will still eat here as it's one of the only options in Jacksonville. My friend and I ate here and spent almost $80 for two. In Korea, that exact meal would have cost around $11. Service was okay as well. Had a Chinese server?? Couldn't pronounce half of the menu nor understood my orders in Korean. $15 for a bottle of soju? It's cheaper in New York City! Meh meh meh! Want close to the real thing? Go to World Market.

Food: It was my first time eating Korean food, and I'll definitely be back for more! I came here for a Thursday lunch and ordered the bulgogi lunch box. The bulgogi was tender and bursting with mouthwatering flavor, while the clear noodles were equally delicious and cooked perfectly. All the vegetables were also fresh and flavorful. Soft drinks were served ice cold in clean, glass cups, but there were several unique alcoholic beverages to choose from as well, including a pomegranate based liquor that I will be back to try. Service: Our server was friendly and attentive. Additionally, since it was so cold outside, she brought complementary egg drop soup to our table. Drinks and food were delivered quickly. Atmosphere: We sat in the main dining area in the center of the restaurant but could smell the delicious aromas emanating from the surrounding grill tables tucked along the perimeter. If we had a larger group for dinner, that seems like the ideal seating area. Also, the restaurant played ESPN on a couple of flat screens, which was a nice surprise.

I'm a fan of Korean BBQ and wanted to try a new place so we gave Sam Won Garden a shot. There wasn't a sign with the restaurant name (at least in English), but there was a place with a sign that said Korean BBQ and Sushi Bar so we figured that must be it. Once we got it, we were able to confirm it was actually the right place. The sushi bar appears to have not been active in a while, so I'm surprised they still have it lit up in neon. But we were there for the BBQ part anyway so that didn't matter. I love cooking my own food on the grill at Hon's and was a little disappointed that most of the food was cooked in the kitchen and it appeared if it was at the the table, they still cooked it for you. Also the prices were nearly double what I was used to paying, though from the food at other tables it appears that the serving size was quite large. We decided to start with a drink and I asked for something that was like cold sake and unflavored. We got a small bottle of an apple wine for $12 that I wasn't much of a fan of. We only managed to drink half the bottle. For dinner we chose a sampler type meal for $46 that included your choice of 4 dishes. We chose galbi, bulgogi, spicey pork and seasoned shrimp. Everything was pretty tasty except the spicey pork was a little bland and not spicey at all. The bulgogi was delicious, the galbi tasted just like when I make it at home (that's good!) and the seasoned shrimp were good but not very seasoned. Our sides included spicey radishes, celery, broccoli with sauce, kimchi, noodles and white rice. Loved the noodles and kimchi but am not a fan of celery, radishes or the sauce that was on the broccoli. Overall the food was tasty and the portions were quite large. And from the blacklights, disco ball and massive sound system with one giant TV stacked on top of like 10 smaller ones, I'm going to guess there some kind of afterparty action once the restaurant closes!

Sam Won is our fav! Love the spicy pork and seafood tofu soup/kalbi combo. Great service and food is always delicious. We've eaten at several Korean places in big cities and Sam Won is just as good. :)

I'm just going to keep this short and simple. I like coming here for the food, since this is only one of 2 Korean BBQ in Jacksonville. The la kalbi is perfect and so are the other dishes. The the reason for 3 star rating is for the service. Every time I come here you always get one napkin, zero refills, and no check at the end of the meal. I always have to go to the counter to pay for my meal everytime since the waiter never comes to the table. Like I said, good food sucky service.

  • S P.

I am Korean and this is the best Korean place in Jax. Serves up a variety of Korean dishes. The banchan (side dishes) could be a bit more fresh, hence the four stars. Otherwise, a solid joint!

Solid Korean fare and menu. Since there are only two Korean spots in town (Hon Korean & Sam Won), I can't help but to compare them to one another. The space itself is extremely tidy and open, with air conditioning (unlike Hon Korean) and plenty of tables and private tables for grilling. The savory seafood pancake (#3) was crazy addictive - it was spongy and filled with seafood and scallions and served with a tangy slightly spicy soy sauce that they make in-house. It's cut into squares and is a large portion that's great as an appetizer for the table. I was lucky enough to score a square with a piece of chewy squid. (it was better than Hon's by a long shot) Was craving dolsot bibimbap, a rice/veggie/beef dish served in a piping hot stone bowl, after a recent trip to Hon Korean. It was good but Hon has the edge on this one. The side dishes, or bachan, were delicious. Our table of four (including one Asian, who gave her seal of approval) received six small sides - cubed fermented radish, spicy kimchi (fermented cabbage with red chilies), a seaweed salad, mung bean jelly (amazing - we gobbled it up quickly), bean sprouts and pickled crunchy cucumbers. All were very fresh and full of flavor. Since they're complimentary, if you'd like more of something, just ask. Would highly recommend. It doesn't look like much from the outside but the interior, service and food are fantastic! Our waitress was helpful and extremely prompt in refilling our drinks and bringing and returning our check (since it was lunchtime). Portions are generous so you'll probably have leftovers.

This is my first yelp review because I feel genuinely offended. Don't take me wrong, I've been to Sam Won Garden quite a few times, but now I will never return. The food is simply okay, not close to Hon Korea but enough to satisfy my Korean cravings. The service was extremely terrible and possibly racist. On the night of our anniversary my boyfriend and I (white) were ignored while tables of Koreans were constantly being waited on hand and foot, and even given extra side dishes (something EVERYONE is supposed to get) that we did not receive. Normally the side dishes are supposed to be brought to the table and refilled constantly as you eat, but instead we were brought one serving and left alone. We did not even receive refills for our water, tea or sake. It was just lazy and rude. I get better service at Hon Korea (or fuck, Chik Fil A), definitely go there instead.

Spicy Pork lunch is delish!! After having a day filled with chaos and nothing going as planned, I was very hungry so I pulled up my Yelp, I'm not sure why but for some reason Korean BBQ was up on Yelp. As I was reading some of the reviews on this place, I realized this was the same place the sales team I was a part of years ago, would frequent every Friday. The sales team referred to this place as "the box" - "let's go to the box". We went nearly every Friday here for lunch years ago and man did I love it! Now things have changed some: the food is no longer in a sharp black with red trim "Bento-type" box. Now it is served on a "lunch tray" as reviewers here noted. But make no mistake, I loved my Spicy Pork and will now have to find reasons to be "in the hood" and come back here for delicious spicy food!

I'm sorry, but I'm not sorry for saying this: People that are not Korean or have had Korean food less than a dozen times should not be rating! This place is Eh at best. The service is sub par, and they put way too much sugar in the meat to compensate for the lack of flavor. Korean restaurants ALWAYS bring out side dishes before the meal, but this place brings them only out during the meal so they can save money. The food is not authentically Korean, but then again we live in Jacksonville so I guess we have to settle for what we have...

I love Sam Won so much, words do not do it justice. We usually start off with a seafood pancake or Mandu fried dumplings. I most always get the Bulgogi because it is just addictive! I have had the Spicy Shrimp, Spicy Pork and the La Galbi which all please the palate. The side vegetables are always fresh and tasty. See you next week Sam Won!

The food here is so good! I love to get the kimchi jaeyook bokeum, kimchi jjigae, tteok mandu guk, or the LA kalbi. All are so good! Although the outside of the building looks bland, the inside is actually nice and there are many grill tables as well as rooms for large parties. The staff is very friendly and helpful. This Korean restaurant is much better than the other one in Jacksonville!!

Love the food, but they have skimped out so much on it. Also being a server w years of experience myself, I think their services need more training on not to rush people and smile more.

OK, I have seen reviews comparing the food and the prices to actual Korean restaurants in Korea. That's silly and useless since most of us will never travel there. We want to know about Korean food in Jacksonville, not Korea! We went there a few weeks ago for the first time and the service was excellent. The food was delicious. We got a variety of dishes and they were all really good. There were several plates of side dishes like kim chee and some stuff that I ddn't recognize. All of it was very tasty. Try it. You won't regret it.

One of the best korean joints in Jacksonville. Tried many and the Korean food here is amazing. We got the bulgogi beef, sides of rice, lettuce wraps, kimchi, and other vegetables. I'm satisfied and stuffed.

So as you all know I have been searching for resturants that have that home taste since I'm so far away from home. It's a little more difficult since my husband is a picky eater. When you come from a place like Hawaii that has so many food choices, it's really hard to satisfy your taste buds in a strange new place. Once again I found this place on yelp, it had really good reviews and really good pictures, (especially the side dishes look authentic Korean Yakuniku.) So I decided to give it a try. Just getting out of the car smelled like Yakuniku so it was really promising. We walked in and like Yelp suggested I asked for a grill table. I used the pictures on Yelp to help me order since normally I leave it up to my very best friend to order back home so I had no idea how to order. The waitrest was really nice, service was fast, and the food AWSOME! It tasted just like home. The sides were the best. I always liked the cube dikon and this place didn't disappoint me, I even asked for seconds. I ordered the LA Kaubi, and the cubed meat, I'm not sure what that one is called, both were good. I also ordered lettus because I don't like to eat a lot of rice! It was all so awsome. The only thing that seemed weird to both my husband and I was that they kept offering to cook the food, when back home normally you cook your own food. But they weren't pushy. They kept checking up on us making sure we had everything we needed. The neighborhood is a bit scary, but it seemed safe enough to me. There is also a chinese resturant by it and I think I'll try that next time I'm in the neighborhood.

Bottom line: Understaffed and overpriced food- will only come back to order lunch specials. Understaffed means little to no quality service. Overpriced means paying $12+ for small bowl of korean instant noodle-ish soup with slabs of tofu. 1 star for the seafood pancake that's delicious, brimming with assorted seafood and have a great crispy texture on the outside but slight chewy consistency inside. 1 star for the lunch specials (last page of the menu) that's a great value, comes with a big salad, glass noodle, choice of meat, fried rice, and a piece of fruit for under $9. Lunch price for 3 of us came out to be $80 before tax and we just feel ripped off with the exception of one of us was smart enough to order the lunch special.

  • A A.

Just okay. The food was not seasoned well and seemed to be more salt than any actual flavor. Service was slow and we were never offered refills for sides or drinks. But I mean it's simple food so even mediocre is still edible.

  • Chris G.

The decor was very nice, but the food was pretty disappointing. My wife and I are West Coast transplants, and our expectations may be a bit high for out here. The food quality was decent but not great. The Banchan (side dishes) were not very good, and we were only served 3 instead of 5-7 or more like traditional Korean restaurants. I guess options are pretty slim in JAX when it comes to Korean food, so I guess we will stick to cooking at home.

This place has gone WAYYYYY downhill ever since they have been under new management. The menu is way too overpriced, the food is merely just whatever, and the service is absolutely horrendous. I am Korean and I have been to Korean restaurants all over the world, from NYC, to California, to Orlando to the actual motherland itself, Korea! This place just doesn't have much going for them and it's sad because Korean cuisine is so limited in Jax. The main thing I am highly upset about is their staff and service. I tried paying with a $50 bill to which i was told was a counterfeit. The lady (who was the owner) told me that the bill was "too soft" and that there was no line along the bill that indicated it was real. Nonetheless, I took her word for it and paid with my debit card. After I left, I felt a bit uneasy so I purchased a counterfeit detector pen and tried marking the same bill, and to my surprise, THE BILL WAS REAL! I was so upset that I was publicly humiliated (I was on a date), that i called the restaurant to notify them of my discovery and to tell them that they need to be careful and more cautious. Now here's the kicker: The same lady picked up and after I told her what had happened, she proceeded to accuse me of lying and continued to say that the bill was and still is fake. I asked her if she marked my bill with a pen, and she denied! She said she didn't need a pen to verify its authenticity and that she can just tell by feeling a bill, whether or not it is counterfeit or real. WTF! really?! How can a person just feel a bill with their hands and come to the conclusion that it is fake? Sure, you may have a very good understanding of what real and fake feels like, but you cannot guarantee that you are correct. I was absolutely shocked at how I was treated both in the restaurant and over the phone. As a former valued customer, I recommend to anyone and everyone that this place has hit its rock bottom. I have never had any problems with Sam Won Garden until they switched over to different management....STAY AWAY!!!!!!

Living in northern Virginia my wife and I are spoiled having eaten in numerous exceptional Korean Restaurants in "Little Korea" located in Annandale. Having said such,Sam Won is still overpriced, having untypical stingy meat & fish portions , along with a limited menu. The traditional Korean complimentary side dishes are also limited and tasteless. Service is not up to traditional Korean attentive benchmark.

I'm giving it 4 because I have no comparison. This is my first Korean dining experience, and it was a good one too. Having said that it probably deserves a 5. Service is second to none. All the food, soup, BBQ was amazing. I will be back!!

Ate here for dinner with the Hubby on Saturday and I have to say I was surprised. You will know you're at the right place when you see in big letters KOREAN BBQ! =0) The place is run by Koreans, which is a good sign. Our waitress apparently didn't recognize the fact that my husband was not Korean and spoke to him in Korean haha. She was pretty embarrassed but we forgave her =0) The place has very limited tables with grills on them, so if you go during a weekend come early to get a table with a grill (that is if you want to grill your own meat- highley recommend!). This place not only has Korean BBQ but it also has sushi and other traditional Korean foods. Maybe next time we will try their Bibimbop. They have A la carte and a special that you can share with two people, which is what we ordered. You get to choose 4 items to grill, we choose Kalbi, spicy pork, bulgogie, and another type of beef. They have chicken and seafood as other choices. The special comes with those delish little side dishes and a side of rice =0) I really enjoyed this place! OH! Another good sign? There were other Koreans eating at this place as well =0) Enjoy!

Before I headed home, I invited my buddy out to grab a bite to eat which would leave us with a flavor of home. We stopped in at this Korean BBQ spot which was well decorated and had both grilled meats and a la carte ordering. I was not looking to go home smelling like BBQ so I decided to order a la carte. I had the Bulgogi (*** stars) which was a poor cut of meat which had been almost minced and the marinade was somewhat bland. The kimchi side dishes (*** stars) were also mediocre but my frat brother enjoyed his noodle dish (**** stars). The prices were fair and we left full so it wasn't that bad. Maybe I should have ordered the Galbi and would have had a better experience.

    (3)
  • Arthur C.

This place is way overpriced for the amount and type of food you get. I ordered the galbi on the grill and seafood pancakes for 2. The beef was a bit chewy and I was hoping they had a smaller and cheaper portion of the pancakes as an appetizer. The highlight of the night was our waiter who kept us entertained and even admitted that the restaurant was way overrated.

Sam Won Garden is really a nice treat if one is in the mood for some good Asian fare that is a little different than that which most Americans are used to. I only go for lunch, and the bento boxes just cannot be beat in terms of value and variety of flavor! You get a ton of rice, excellent noodles, dumplings, sushi, salad with a delicious sweet ginger dressing and either beef kalbi, grilled beef, chicken, or pork. One of the waitresses is an absolute trip, the others tend to be kind of blah. The ambience is really nice: wallpaper with Chinese calligraphy and raised areas for small parties and tons of karaoke screens, the images that flash across being very entertaining. Once you go, you will certainly go back many times. There are always lots of Koreans there, which suggests at the very least it is wholly authentic and undoubtedly worth it!!

    (4)
  • Elizabeth M.
