I waited over an hour to be served and it was worth every second. Omg, best seafood I have ever had. It was cooked to perfection. It is totally worth the 25 minute drive! I got the fried shrimp and fries, my boyfriend got fried clams and fried okra. The okra is fresh. There is also a market in there and it has pretty decent prices too. Everyone there is super friendly, I got extra pink sauce, idk what it is but it is addicting. Basically dinner with a view since it's right outside. Stop reading this and just GO! You won't regret it.

Crazy hour-long wait during the weekday dinner timeframe...and that's just to place your order. Add another 10-15 minutes for your food to be cooked. If you get pass that, then you're in for some good grub. It's fresh today the least but the portion sizing is in direct correlation with the menu pricing - you get what you pay for. Even on a humid night, it was a nice sit down meal to cap off the sunset.

Shhhhhh! Really! Locals and visitors alike have found this gem in Mayport. We have lived here since the '70's and we love the fresh seafood here! Try choosing your own lobster tail and they will cook it for you! I am partial to the blackened scallops and fried oysters, my hubby favors the classic haddock and clam strips with fries and chowder. Ooh yeah! Okay, so you wait in line to order (and it can be the length of the store) but the payoff is delicious. We love watching the boats come in and the gulls perched with the sun setting behind them. We visit at least once every two weeks. Nothing compares, but if you want something fancier than shorts, flip-flops, and plastic baskets of delectable seafood, try elsewhere. More space for me and my friends!

I was a little surprised when I walked in and saw that it seems to be much more of a market than a restaurant...at least on the inside. But, it really didn't matter once I got my food! -Shrimp dip: creamier and tastier than expected, didn't eat much of it though knowing how much more food was coming -Blackened Scallops: absolutely fantastic, I almost didn't want the rest of my food once I tried them -Fried Haddock: cooked perfectly with a tasty dipping sauce, the fish could have been seasoned a bit more, but overall very good -Shrimp Nachos: these were missing something, but I just couldn't put my finger on it. The shrimp was super tasty, I don't know maybe because there was no cheese but cheese and shrimp don't go together so maybe shrimp on nachos just isn't for me -Grilled Shrimp Tacos: my friend ate them in a matter of minutes, so I'm assuming they were good -Raw and Fried Oysters: they were a hit at the table! They only serve beer and wine but do have some craft beers and you cant get beers by the bucket which is the better way to go because you likely will be sitting outside in the heat. If and when I'm in Jacksonville again I'll pay another visit.

I called ahead to make sure they were okay with us strolling in ten minutes before they close. "No problem, we only close the doors at 8 and anyone inside will still be served." Cool. Blackened triggerfish and fried shrimp baskets were delicious. Fried alligator was... dry? Is that normal because I don't have much experience with it. Crossing it off the list of items I liked though. Same for the oysters. Kinda small... I know, they're out of season. Vibrio. Got it. I'm not docking any stars since nobody "makes" oysters. If you want crab legs, you have to order at the market and they cook it for you. I didn't find this out until it was too late, unfortunately.

The 4 stars is for the restaurant only because the fish market surely is 5 judging by the mountains of fresh red snapper and the line snaking through the front, even on Christmas Eve. The shrimp nachos we ordered were good. The blackened shrimp was fantastic and the diced tomatoes, onion and small mango pieces were delicious. The chips were a bit lackluster and the lettuce was a bit sad. Still, we're here for seafood and that certainly was the highlight!

Starters were the gumbo and conch fritters. Both were equally delish. There were about 10 quarter sized fritters in the basket which was more than expected. The gumbo was wonderful just piping hot when it was served up...ouchy woo woo scald your tongue straight outta your freaking mouth hot hot hot! The Mr. Had the salmon b.l.t. Club which was the special and it was HUGE. I mean triple decker huge. He rated it a 7 on a scale of 10. The star of the meal was the blackened shrimp nachos the portion was massive enough for 2 people. 10 out of 10 by both me and the Mr. You order at the register before sitting down. We arrived at about 7:00 on Friday night and stood in line for about 35 minutes. I would highly suggest purchasing a beverage for the wait, which was suggested to me by one of the market cashiers. Servers also walked around offering samples of shrimp and basa while people were in line. After sitting down our appetizers arrived within 5 minutes and our entrees followed very closely behind. We will definitely be going back!

I recently got invited to tag along on a trip to Safe Harbor for lunch and boy, am I glad I did. It's not a very convenient location for me but it's worth the drive. The setup is different from most places. The entrance brings you in a market area where you can get fresh seafood or wait in line to order your lunch. I was with a group so 3 of us ordered different dishes to share. Between the 3 of us we ordered the blackened shrimp nachos, fish tacos, and breaded shrimp basket. It was a Sunday afternoon so the line was kind of long but once we got our orders in we were given numbers and headed outside to the deck. It was a chilly day but they had some nice heaters right by our table. The foot itself was fantastic. Being right in Mayport and knowing just how fresh everything was makes it taste so much better. The serving sizes are pretty generous (especially on the shrimp nachos). Everything was fantastic. The shrimp nachos were easily my favorite but the other items were great, too. On the way out I bought a salmon steak to make for dinner the following night. Despite the fact that I didn't really realize that I was buying a piece of salmon with a huge bone in it (now I know the difference between a steak and a filet....), I was very happy with it. The price was good considering how fresh and tasty it was (around $5 for a pretty good size piece, perfect for me). I've already told multiple people about my experience at Safe Harbor and I'm looking forward to going back.

We went on a Sun afternoon, there were a few ppl in line but it moved quickly. Placed our order and someone brought food to our table when it was ready. We ordered Captain's Walter combo (pick 3) - got the blacken scallops, grilled shrimp and fried calamari. My favorite was the scallops bc they were cooked perfectly. That alone would have been enough for the 4 of us since my lit' one barely eats. But I would say basket could feed 2 ppl. We also order a soft shell crab po'boy sandwich. It looked very impressive bc the crab was very big and was placed open face on top of the fries, then the bun, then on a bed of veggies. Flavor was just ok, nothing amazing. Perhaps it was slightly under seasoned. I really didn't like their fries, it was very under seasoned and you get a lot of it. Lastly, we ordered the conch fritters which was a little greasy but pretty good. Overall I thought the seafood tasted fresh but wish the fries were better.

The seafood and the fish here are incredibly good. I don't remember having such a great simple meal at a fish market in many years. I could mumble and insert one thousand words here trying to tell you about that experience, but for brevity's sake, let me just say that this place is really, really good. It is not just that the fish is fresh though. It tastes fresh, yes, it is soft and tender, yes, but above all, it is cooked right and it comes to the table tasting even more delicious. Yes, they also know how to cook fish, yes. After making the line for about fifteen minutes, I ordered a fried trigger-fish and shrimp basket, and a blackened haddock and scallops basket. The fried fish and shrimp were battered right, the batter covering every inch of the fish and the shrimp, and it was cooked the right way, being crunchy on the outside but soft and moist on the inside. The blackened fish and scallops were also coated and fried perfectly, and the seasoning was very good. But I must say that the best bite I had were the scallops. The scallops were big and juicy, and biting into them was like having a shot of sea water, if that was ever possible to do. The scallops were the *bomb*. I also shared an order of shrimp tacos. The shrimp came with a dark sauce and they were cooked pretty good too. The tortillas were good as well, but I wouldn't say this dish is their forte, although it was a good dish, and there were lots of options when it came to hot sauce to cover those tacos. Before this feast, I had a fish soup that was tomato based, and also had potatoes in it. It was really good as well. The way things work around here is that you arrive, make the line to order (15 minutes or more), place your order and pay, then with your order number you go outside to the veranda and sit and wait. Before you know, the runners bring the food out and you chow down. Simple as that. While you wait in line, if you are in a group, you could wander around and look at the fish and the shellfish on display. It all seems very fresh and the market employees are constantly bringing out more stuff. You see people cleaning fish, chopping, moving boxes, etc. The kitchen is somewhere out of view. Two things that I learned from talking to regulars. One, you could call in advance, place your order and pick it up. Who would have thought of that? Instead of making the line for fifteen minutes, you just pay and pick up. Two, and this is the good one, you could buy anything in the market and send it to the kitchen to be cooked, for a nominal fee. This, to me, is just mind blowing. The amount of fish and shellfish available is very large, which makes your possible combinations many. Overall, because of the quality of the fish, the freshness, and the dexterity and experience of the kitchen, Safe Harbor is a must in this neck of the woods. Or should I say in this part of the river bend? Oh! Yes, this place operates mostly as a restaurant, but it is a market as well, even though market is emphasized in the name.

Wow! Why have I waited so long to come to this place? We had the blackened shrimp tacos and blackened shrimp nachos. My wife and I shared each. The shrimp tasted so fresh and amazing (and I've grown up around fresh shrimp my whole life). A few tips: Go at off peak times and prepare to stand in line! It is worth the wait. While I haven't tried the fried shrimp, the guy at the cash register insisted that the blackened shrimp were best, and I loved them! Also, get some fresh seafood to take home!

  • Weime L.

Awesome Local Fresh Fish Everything we have tried here has been delicious. We usually order something from the handwritten list next to the cash register, or from the specials board. The menu and the specials board change frequently, ordering from them, we have never gone wrong. I usually have the blackened or fried grouper fillet . It is an excellent deal for fresh, clean, well prepared fish; in large portions. The coleslaw, that comes with it is really good. Last time, the husband had blackened trigger fish which is his favorite. It was spot on, and one of the best trigger fish sandwiches he has had. The atmosphere outside, is relaxed, rustic, Mayport Village. You are down by the boats watching them come and go, along with the smell of the ocean and the seagulls squawking, (not too many), is really charming.

Absolutely some of the best seafood I've ever eaten. I had the combo, basa and shrimp basket, perfectly cooked, perfectly season and a generous amount of food...I would highly, highly recommend trying this place out!

Always consistently good!!! The calm chowder is seriously the BEST I've ever had!! It's a must if you're here!! Blackened fish sandwich never disappoints!!

Great fresh seafood place in Mayport. Excellent product and service. The restaurant is casual and very good. You can't go wrong by shopping at this place for all your fresh seafood needs. It is the Jacksonville Beaches go to place for fresh seafood.

  • Nyla S.

Love! Love! Love! Safe Harbor! Everything we've bought and tasted from here has been absolutely amazing. From their fresh seafood market to their fresh out of the sea restaurant. We've ordered quite a few items from the restaurant but way more from the market. I suggest EVERYTHING! Anything that you like, order it and you will most likely be amazed. The only thing I didn't care for was the gumbo, it wasn't horrible, just not my thing I guess. The market opens before the restaurant and I understand why. If you want to try this place out I definitely recommend going during the weekday because the weekends are ridiculous. The line could be trailing out the door, depending on the time of day that you go. If you love seafood then Safe Harbor is the only option!!!!!!!!! We drive out here four times a month or more and we will continue to be customers until the end! Happy Yelping...

Ordered the 2-item basket with blackened shrimp and fried clam-strips. The food was great, but cold upon my arrival and for that reason, I can't give them 5 stars. I called my order in giving them a 30minute ETA - they stated they'll "drop my order in right now" before I could stop them over the phone. My food was ready for 10-15 minutes before I arrived allowing it to cool off. It wasn't busy when I arrived, AKA no line at all, so there was no reason to rush. The shrimp maintained some warmth, but the clam strips and fries were definitely cold. Nevertheless, I'll come back here again next time I'm in town. I recommend calling in, but try to have them delay your cook time to better sync with your arrival.

This spot in Mayport Village has without a doubt the best offering of seafood in the surrounding area. Sure there are very good seafood restaurants in Jacksonville, fancy, sit-down full service and a beautiful menu to pursue. Not here, when you enter you find yourself in a fish market surrounded by the most amazing assortment of fish, and shell-fish available in the city. Chalk Board specials, ink board menu, oh and did I forget to say, you stand in line to order. Don't let this keep you away, it's well worth giving up some of the perks for the food. Now open on Sunday it fills up early we arrived around 12:30 and the line was manageable, about a half hour later I went to get a refill on a drink and the lie was about 30 deep. People who know this place stand happily in line chatting with the other fish lovers and all is good. Once you choose what you want either from the board or the offerings in the case you place the order get your drink and take a seat out on the covered patio, the food will be brought your way. I have to add here if you do not see what you want on the posted menu pick your fish, give it to the cook, tell them how you would like it prepared and it's done! I don't know of any other restaurant that offers this feature in town. While you are waiting take advantage of the view, shrimp boats line the docks, birds, circle around looking for the treats thrown from the boats, pelicans bounce on the waves, it's just idyllic made more so but the fact it was a sunny day. Our food started arriving shortly after ordering and it was spectacular, Oysters, Shrimp and Grits, Scallops and Shrimp baskets, Bisque, Oyster baskets. We ate and ate till we could eat no more. The restaurant itself is dog friendly so if your pooch is well-behaved bring it along. There are a few steps to navigate so be aware of that as well. Don't miss the opportunity to try this restaurant.

Absolutely LOVE this place. Great quaint spot in the heart of Mayport Village. Fresh seafood prepared any way you want it. The locals eat here too. I particularly enjoyed the fried Mayport shrimp. The conch fritters are seasoned and fried to perfection. On this visit, we watched dolphins dancing in the river just out the window. Check the website for hours because they close early

Came here on a Sunday 11ish before the rush. Ordered the conch appetizer and it was phenomenal. The soft shell crab was yummy. They give you a lot of fries which I couldn't finish. The hush puppies are delish!

I love this local spot. I went with a group of foodie friends for brunch and it was wonderful as ever. Three of us split the blackened shrimp nachos, fried shrimp basket, and fish tacos, Everything was perfectly cooked and delicious. After we finished our meal, I went in and purchased fresh salmon and shrimps from their seafood market. The market is huge and has a large selection of seafood. If you want a true taste of Northeast Florida seafood without all the trendy buzz, you need to visit Safe Harbor Seafood.

  • Amanda G.

Seafood soup is a must!!! I chose a Grouper salad because I really just wanted to enjoy some fish with no bread or sauces. It was perfect and soooo fresh! My mom had the shrimp and grits and I have to give a big thumbs down. Who fries grits? The shrimp were amazing but really didn't need to sit over a bed of fried grits.

    (5)
  • Donn D.

The limited seating area is mostly outside overlooking the water. The food is worth any wait...very fresh and I've not had anything that wasn't delicious. The seafood market has a great selection of whole fish as well as fillets, soft shell crab, Mayport shrimp, etc...

    (4)
  • Jay A.

The fried Mayport shrimp were some of the best I've ever had... still can't stop thinking about the flavor a day later. Reminds me of some of the places I frequented on Cape Cod growing up. There was a long line, but it moved swiftly and the employees were all friendly and energetic. Food came out in no time at all. Watched the sunset over the water as we ate... perfect way to end a beach day!

  • Morgan H.

I love the freshness of ordering from Safe Harbor and eating what they've caught that day within minutes of placing your order. It's a tad pricey but the portions definitely make up for this. I've never been disappointed.

I had the haddock basket and was wonderful awesome seasoning I think everybody in Jacksonville knows about this place because it was packed tell food was amazing I'll be back for sure

I reviewed Safe Harbor in late-December and gave it four stars. Mrs and I have been back twice since - scratch the four stars and make it FIVE! The wife raved so much about her grouper sandwich on our first visit that I've now had it twice. It is nothing short of phenomenal. It is such a huge piece of fish that it hangs off both sides of the bun. You could almost make a meal on that part of it alone. The clam chowder is something that you don't want to miss, either. On our two most recent visits, the wife and I split an order and ordered one to take with us. It isn't cheap but a quart of chowder was enough for each of us to have a small bowl for the next two meals. As I noted in my original review, the people are very friendly, too. The staff hustles your food out to you so you do not have to worry about it getting cold. We waited almost an hour standing in line this past Saturday night - so be warned. The BEST is worth the wait, however!

AWESOME!!!! This is by far the best seafood market I've been to since moving to Jax. It's a bit of a drive but so worth it. The beauty of St.Johns River, along with watching the fishermen and women waiting for that big catch of the day is truly a sight to see. The market is clean, organized, and service is fast. The staff was very helpful and extremely knowledgeable. They gave us samples to try grilled and fried. You must go out back and enjoy lunch on the dock, the tables sit right on the River. This visit felt sort of like an old school field trip. I enjoyed it completely. Oh by the way I bought 4 lbs of Basa Fish..Yummy... Also Red snapper, and Tuna Steak.. Prices are reasonable and well worth it! Hey got to take a pic with a Big Fish, so I'm happy......

My BF and I came to Jacksonville for a 4-day vacation on Spring break and already visited this restaurant 3 times by day 3. As soon as we arrive, he would stand in line while I scout out a table on the deck. On our first visit, we waited at least 20 minutes in line to order (the line seems to be long regardless of the time of day). You can order everything (except for oysters which are fresh, steamed, or fried) grilled, fried, or blackened. We have ordered the Fried Gator Tail Appetizer, fried Calamari basket, fried oysters basket, grilled, blackened, and fried scallops basket, and grilled and fried shrimp basket, and blackened flounder (part of the locals catch). The blackened flounder we tried seemed a little too dry, but everything else tasted very fresh and the fried calamari was so crispy! Tip* definitely order the scallops grilled or blackened because the fried scallops are tiny sized scallops. Whereas the grilled or blackened scallops are huge. Both the grilled and fried shrimp were great. You can also purchase fresh seafood from their market and pay $2/lb I think to have them cook it for you. This place totally beats my previous favorite seafood restaurant Bubba Gump for both the fair price and food quality. Five Stars!

  • Heather S.

I was very surprised by the food here. I am one of those people that doesn't like fishy fish or fishy seafood taste. I went here on the recommendation of a neighbor. I am so glad I did!!!! I ordered the blackened shrimp and haddock basket. The haddock was seasoned well and I liked it but the star if the basket was the shrimp. It was cleaned correctly and cooked to perfection. Not chewy at all and the seasoning was outstanding!!!! I will be back for sure. Their blackened shrimp is the BEST I have had here in Jax!!!

    (5)
  • Laurissa B.

Incredible! Kids meals are massive! We had basa basket, shrimp basket, and the same for the kids in kids meals. Right along the water. Super fresh. Took some crab dip home with us. Worth the wait in line! Great selection for seafood market as well.

  • Shellie T.

Help where is Sid and Linda. I am a seasonal customer and I came into this fish market. It was filthy and the customer service was so rude. I have to find the couple that owned it before. Anyone know where they moved?

    (1)
  • Hong N.

OMG . It's soooo good and reasonable!!!! It's attached to the market so everything seems every fresh. I had the cranny savanna soup. It was nice and meaty. Not diluted at all. Def a must when you order. I also order the fish taco. I upgraded to founder fish. Which was 4 dollars more but it was worth it. It was fresh and nicely fried. The pickled salad was pretty fresh too. We came early so there was barely a wait. But we been here when it was crowded. However, if it's a crowded place you know is goooodddd

    (5)
  • Amy L.

Best calm chowder and scallops I've ever had!! I have been raving about this place and recommending everyone to go try it out. It's right by the Mayport ferry and has a great view. It's a small place, but we were in and out very quickly so seating rotates nicely.

    (5)
  • Steve B.

Great Market! Spectacular. A Seafood dream. Organized venue. Outstanding service. Shrimp, Fish , Lobster, Po boys, they got it all here fro market to food. Customer service that knows what they are talking. Affordable. TeamPortions. A Seafood Spot Orgasm here exists. Damn, wish every city along a coast had one of these. Grade: A

    (5)
  • Ronald D.

I got the shrimp nachos which are huge but comes in a tiny bowl. The only thing I would say needs to be different is there salsa, they use a cheap ketchup tasting salsa that ruins the entire meal unless you eat it seperately.

    (4)
  • James Y.

This is not a fancy spot but the food is excellent. Some of the best shrimp I've had. Be prepared for a wait. The line is LONG so get there early. Did I mention the seafood was fantastic?

    (5)
  • Leslie S.

Never dissappointed when we eat here. I had blackened Mayport Shrimp and my husband had Blackened Red Snapper. Both were excellent! Love this place. Wished we lived closer so we could enjoy it more often. Highly recommend!

    (5)
  • Greg C.

You can expect to wait in line to order food in the restaurant. It will definitely be worth the wait. Saturday, we waited about 20 minutes to get to the register and place our order. You order, pay and then take your number to your table. Nothing fancy here but that first bite... Oh man is this place awesome! I have ordered the blackened Mahi sandwich numerous times. Every time I've been incredibly happy with my choice. Fish that was cut less than an hour prior to eating. A big meaty portion on a grilled bun with the perfect accessories. Onion, tomato, lettuce and tartar sauce. You get the perfect sandwich with excellent french fries. Please keep it a secret because the lines can't possibly get longer. Give it a try, you will be thanking your lucky stars you found this place.

Fresh right at the dock. I love this place, swim suit and T Shirt with flip flops. Last year we took in fish we had caught and had them cook it for us. Tonight, we had Fried and Blackened Shrimp, Crab Cakes, Blackened Snapper and Gumbo. One of the best meals of the trip.

This is where my family and I go to get fresh seafood to cook for gatherings, especially oysters. They have a great restaraunt as well. My basket choice are the sea scallops.

  • Deprina G.

You can't live in jax and not have been to this place. I think my fiance first went when we moved here and he loves to buy 3 lbs of fresh shrimp all the time. I went here on a foodie adventure with a crew and we had a table of 15. This is the type of place you order then find a seat. The order taker suggested a dessert that ended up being sooo good. i don't remember the name but the one with the nuts on top. ordered the shrimp nachos ORDER THE NACHOS cant go wrong

    (5)
  • Stacy B.

Had to wait in the line for 45 minutes. Lines very confusing because the line for restaurant and the market not well marked. Not worth standing in the long line but the blackened grouper sandwich was good along with the oysters but I wouldn't get the clam chowder again it was too runny to be called chowder and the spinach patty has odd taste. The market is clean and doesn't have a fishy smell so would recommend it for the market only

    (3)
  • Paula C.

Freshest seafood around the green bean medley is awesome.. very clean and the management and staff are very happy and helpful. This is the best restaurant out here in our little Mayport Village!!!

    (5)
  • Bree H.

We have been here 3 times and love it. It is very popular and depending on the times you go the line can be out the door and you could be waiting a half an hour or more. My favorite is the scallops but you need to go hungry because you get a huge serving. Love their coleslaw too. For non fish lovers they do an awesome burger too. There is nothing better then sitting out on the deck, gentle breeze blowing, watching the boats come and go and enjoying good food.

  • Jason L.

I had the shrimp nachos and they were delicious My buddy had the blackened shrimp po boy and couldn't stop raving about it !! It's a bit of drive ,but very well worth it ! You can also get fresh seafood right off the boat which is amazing with such a variety !!

    (5)
  • Eric M.

Amazing seafood! Very fresh! Prepare for a line but well worth it! The shrimp po boy blackened was amazing! The crab dip was very good as well! Zero complaints, come hungry and try a few thing.

4.5 -- wow, this place. Off the beaten path in Mayport, if you want fresh delicious seafood head here immediately. Enjoyed Safe Habor much more than nearby Singleton's. The blacked scallop basket was amazing and to start the dozen steamed oysters were unbeatable at $5.99. Also worth noting: delicious shrimp po'boy piled high on good hoagie roll and the datil shrimp tacos complete with warm corn tortillas, creme, pico and shredded lettuce. When the weather is right there are plenty of spots outside to sit and enjoy the view (water/boats/birds) and your amazingly fresh seafood. Scoop up some fish or clams to go and don't miss the packaged items like smoked salmon dip and crab dip. Thumbs up!

  • Lauren T.

This place is a hidden gem! The seafood is delicious and so adorable! I got the scallops and they were only 12.99 and they were generous with the serving. You have to try the gator bites too! Didn't try anything that wasn't good. So yummy! I'll definitely be back.

    (5)
  • Larry A.

We select fish to take home and the person behind the counter said "they are filleting that in the back, let me get you some fresh." Now that fresh.

    (5)
  • Valerie C.

100% some of the best seafood in jacksonville at a reasonable price. My parents and I always come here. Believe me, they don't pay for seafood unless it's done right- and it is. it's right on the water so you can watch people hauling the fish you're eating off the boats! It's a market too so you can even decide to buy things to cook at home. So many selections! Try the softshell crab, it's to die for.

    (5)
  • Jamie W.

If you want fresh fish and seafood you can't get any better than this. The shrimp nachos are amazing - try them blackened. Fresh fish sandwiches. Shrimp right from the docks. Yummy all the way around. Sit outside and enjoy the view of all the shrimp boats.

  • Megan P.

The boiled shrimp and steamed clams were so fresh! We had a great time and really enjoyed our dinner tonight. The service from the order window to the back deck was on point. The kids grilled cheese basket was enormous and my husband had a soft shell crab sandwich which he said was excellent. We will be back. Great food at a very fair price.

We've been going to Safe Harbor for years and have enjoyed both the restaurant and market sides. Today I'll focus on the market. It's always a pleasure to see so many fresh and local options available for sale! In addition to those items shipped in from elsewhere, we had the option of local flounder, amberjack, snapper, mahi mahi, kingfish, and of course Mayport shrimp. My only suggestion for improvement is clearer labeling of what's local and what's not. The staff was very helpful and upfront about which was which (for example, only 3 varieties of all the shrimp available were actually Mayport shrimp), but I think it would be nice for folks to not have to ask (many may not even *know* to ask). I did notice that they labeled the farm-raised fish for the most part. Overall, a great market and a place I'll look forward to coming back to for years to come!

Absolutely the best seafood around! I typically get the blackened shrimp and mahi mahi basket, they are both amazing. We've also had the scallops and fish tacos which are very good also. The seafood is fresh off the boat, they also have a market where you can buy fresh fish and shrimp. We have been numerous times and have never been disappointed. You have been I would suggest giving it a try.

Update. ...we went back and although the food on entre was great again DO NOT ORDER RAW OYSTERS! The reason is their system. One person breaks oysters..another opens them and cuts them and a third one runs water over the oysters in shells. They do a very POOR job of cutting the oyster out of the shell AND I have NEVER seen so much she'll left with the oyster. You ate now warned. Entre was still good.

I am very picky! But I am addicted to the blackened ANYTHING here and must go at least once a week. I would say I am here 3 times a week between lunch and diner. Scallops and mahi blackened. I plan to do a fried grouper soon with malt vinegar soon.amazing and fresh.

This is an excellent place for seafood lovers to be. Keep in mind if you don't like the menu you can buy a fresh fish at the counter and it will be cooked the way you like right there. We are coming here all the time - always satisfied. It became a 'must' place to visit when we have out of town guests.

Hands down best shrimp I've had in Jax. I grabbed the fried shrimp basket with fries and it didn't disappoint! Me and my love ended up going for a late lunch and the weather was nice enough to sit outside. Great place and totally worth the drive. I can't wait to go back and get more shrimp :)

Went on Friday night for dinner. Beautiful fresh seafood! Excellent little place with a beautiful view. Very very busy, but delish, well worth the time. Not only a restaurant but a seafood market as well! Enjoy!

This restaurant is the real deal Holyfield. I almost want to keep it a secret and call it my own but that would be stingy. Told the ol ball n chain I wanted seafood (crab legs) on the ocean. I got a crab cake, a po boy, n grilled shrimp next to the ocean. Restaurant owner: plz adopt me. I work for scrimps. Got my crab legs later that weekend.

Amazingly fresh fish. They will even cook your fresh catch. They sell some of the freshest seafood in town as a market. As a restaurant, there's a pleasant outdoor patio right on the St. John's River, right across from the Mayport Ferry. Awesome! Highly recommended.

Let me say this up front: the food here is fantastic. This is a well deserved reputation. However, the thing forcing me to give only 3 stars is the method/process of ordering/dining in use. After waiting in a single line (sort of cafeteria style) for nearly 45 minutes, we finally got to the register to order. While ordering, a disgruntled customer came up to complain to the cashier that his family had been waiting for 45 minutes SINCE ORDERING (AFTER waiting 45 minutes in line TO order!), and were still waiting on some of their food. Since the process goes (long) 1)--queue 2)--order 3)--try to find a seat (if you're lucky) while your food is prepared 4)--wait patiently for your food to be delivered to your table, such delays are inevitable. Fortunately, we didn't have to wait too long (~15 minutes) for our food, but considering that we'd already stood in line for 45 minutes, that's still too long. But hey, at least the food was fresh and delicious. So the food is very good (and fresh), but the business model is severely flawed. I chalk this up to this place being a victim of its own success, but I'll NEVER come back on a weekend. Maybe I'll try it for lunch some time during the week, since it's right off base.

I was expecting more food wise from the reviews. My scallops were fried, but when they came out they were BAY scallops. Why waste your time serving bay scallops , they had big ocean scallops available. Fried oysters were good. They destroyed my wife's blackened grouper. Way too seasoned. Got a half pound of shrimp very good , very fresh but overpriced. The prices of the fish at the market side are very good and the fish is very fresh.

    (2)
  • Todd A.

Their oysters are $8.99 per dozen, not $5.99 like their website says. 2 dozen, $6 difference. Glad I drove 20 miles for nothing.

Don't waste your time or your money. I only heard great things about the restaurant, but had only been to the market. So, I finally had a day I could drive out there and, man, was I disappointed! The prices on their website were NOT the same as what they were in person. UPDATE YOUR WEBSITE! I was planning on steamed oysters, but when I got there, they were significantly higher priced than on the website. So I settled for the grilled grouper basket. To say my grouper was overcooked would be an understatement. Leather on top of soggy fries would be a better description. My husband had the fried shrimp basket, and he said it was so so. I tried one of the shrimp, and it too was overcooked. $36.00 for two people at lunch... WAY TOO MUCH!! I was told later that the original cooks (Sid and Linda) left to open their own restaurant. I will try that place next time I'm yearning for seafood. However, after this terrible experience, I don't think I'll want ANY seafood for a while.

The fish is just off the boat. Get the fresh catch of the day, I like the steamed shrimp or the grilled fish; better yet get both.

Fantastic, one of the best gems on the east coast and worth a trip to Mayport.we stayed at Hanna city park and this seafood shack was just 10 min. Up the road. The shrimp are purchased at the counter and a pound or more of the cleaned shrimp cost $12.00. You then take them to the "cook" line and for $2.00 they fry them just right. All I could eat!!!! Even better than O 'Steens in St Augustine, my former favorite

This place was very good and the fish was very fresh and tasty. I took everyone's advice and had the grouper and my son had the snapper. They were very good, but I give the edge to the grouper. My wife had the deviled crabs, and as a crab connoisseur was not impressed with it. I wish we would have bought some of the fresh fish and had them cook it up. That way we would have ensured we were getting the fish we wanted. I saw quite a few varieties of snapper, and don't think we got the red snapper which is one of our favorites. If you want great seafood though, this place will not disappoint you. I'm glad we followed everyone's advice and visited here.

This was my second visit to Safe Harbor. My wife and I had never eaten here before and decided to drive out and try it when my brother was visiting from Chicago. It does not disappoint! Fashionably shabby, really a working seafood store with the restaurant as a secondary bonus! Not an elegant place by any stretch, but with food this fresh and good who needs ambience! Besides it has its own down home, southern fish camp comfort going strong and it's very welcoming and accommodating once the ordering process is surpassed. You place your order and then sit with a numbered sign, today the line at 1pm was long, took about 25 minutes to order. But food arrived at the table piping hot and fresh in about 10-15 minutes. We dawdled, ate leisurely and left about 2:20 with the line the same length. A fried grouper sandwich that was enormous, a beautiful piece of fresh blackened Red Snapper, fried Okra, cole slaw, hush puppies and fries. My wife got the blackened Trigger-fish on the first visit and really wanted it again but they were out, so the Snapper was recommended as "just came in." I tried the Snapper and will have that myself next time, but my last Grouper sandwich was soooo good I had to try it again to make sure! The Snapper was perfectly seasoned, spicy yet mild, perfectly cooked, flaky and juicy and a perfect fish for the preparation! Thank you to the gentleman taking the orders for recommending both the Trigger and Snapper and being right on the money both times. Definitely a must try if your in Jax and looking for good seafood! It's worth the trip!

The seafood comes right off the boat, so it is guaranteed fresh! I save so much money and get a fresher product by buying here. As a bonus, they have a restaurant, which is always delicious! You can get your seafood cooked anyway you like, which is awesome, because I don't like a lot of fried food.

I got the grouper sandwich and my friend the fried shrimp. Everything was super fresh. Delicious. Can't wait to go back. Only downside was that it was crowded and kinda loud- but didn't bother me much.

This was our third time here and still great seafood. We walked in and the line was about 15 people deep. We ordered shrimp both steamed and fried. My wife had a blackened Mahi sandwich that was so big she could not eat it all. We took some of our lunch home because it was just too much. When we come back next year this will be on our list to stop and get some really good saefood.

Found this place on Yelp while visiting Amelia Island. Stopped in about 5:30 pm on a Saturday. The line was back to the register. Started visiting with the people in front of us, they wee from Jacksonville. She told me that I could get fish from the market and then the restaurant cooks would cook it for me. So I bought 1/2 lb of grouper plus we ordered shrimp. I had the grouper 1/2 fried and 1/2 blackened. It was fabulous and do was the shrimp. Loved the hush puppies and cole slaw. Left here feeling like a local, fantastic food, nice patio and reasonably priced.

The best ever! It's a fish market, so expect that. Very laid back, order fresh and they cook it up then bring it out to your table. I had steamed shrimp (to die for) and a side of fried okra (awesome light batter). Husband had a grouper sandwich that he loved and my stepson had a combo basket of fried shrimp and calamari that he loved. If you want seafood go here! Money well spent!

Yelp did not steer us wrong! We drove far out of our way to try the seafood here. You have to understand. I'm not known as a "seafood lover". I only recently in the past five years started eating it after my husband had me try fresh seafood. I still don't care for crab or lobster but I love shrimp and any mild saltwater fish like Mahi, tuna, snapper or grouper. However, it is difficult to find a place that has it fresh enough for me to truly enjoy every bite. Safe Harbor Seafood delivered that rarity for me. There was a line from the cashier to the door. That's a good sign! I ordered the daily catch - snapper. I had it fried with blackened scallops. The scallops were the best I've ever had but I'm still not a fan of their texture. The snapper. Wow. Perfect. Perfect taste. Perfectly cooked. Not greasy at all. Mmmmmmm. My husband got the blackened shrimp nachos. Fantastic. There were so many different levels of flavor my mouth was having a party! We would not hesitate to make the long drive back to eat here again. It was truly spectacular.

Good food, ok price. Of out were a restaurant with a waiter etc... It would be a good deal however safe harbor is a whole sale distributor and has been on, off, and on again with food. Great food, all seating outside, a bit pricey but very good.

Fresh food fresh cook, I love the idea of this restaurant.. U buy whatever you want from their collection of fishes, shrimps, and mussels, and then if you want they can cook it, they charge $1.5 per pound for cook

If your a seafood lover Safe Harbor is the place for you. I ate at Safe Harbor with my family and the fresh seafood I had was the best I've ever had in Jax. Our order was served quickly and the food was in very generous portions. Do yourself a favor drive on over to Mayport and buy a meal you wont regret it.

Let me get to the point. EAT HERE!!! If you want good, as fresh as it gets seafood, this is the place. Prices are great, portions are big. This is a great value. Their fried oysters are the best I have had anywhere in the US. If you want something truly special try the shrimp nachos. Last time we were there, we saw the fish being delivered from the boat behind the resaturant. We watched it be cleaned and filleted and saw them cook it for our lunch. It had been off the boat 15 minutes. Amazing. Best seafood in Jacksonville.

Always been my favorite spot to go to on my day off. I've been following my mom here to buy seafood since I was little, and have never got a chance to tried their food till a couple of weeks ago. Woah. I enjoyed the view and their fresh food. Going to get the blacken scallops next time since I saw someone ordered and it looked so good.

A dusty road and a seemingly abandoned building.... While this sounds like a food story gone wrong the gem that awaits is a treasure beyond compare. The restaurant is attached to the fishery and serves fish straight off of the boat. You can't get it any fresher if you tried. The food is fabulous but what really makes the experience is the owner and staff who go out of their way to make your experience worth while. They took the time to make recommendations of the best fish and combinations to get as you can have your fish fried blackened or grilled and even gave us samples of their homemade dips and sauces as we waited! After getting our food the owner gave us the best seat in the house by the water were we got the whole ocean experience by watching the gulls, pelicans, and boats go by. From the outside this place can be deceiving but if you are up for an adventures this place will definitely please the pallet.

Ate at Safe Harbor today for lunch. All I can say is "so yummy!" This was my family's first visit, but it will not be our last. Everything was so fresh. My kids had the fried mahi basket. My wife had the fried shrimp basket. I had the Best blackened shrimp po boy that I have ever tasted. Excellent choice choice for lunch in a fun coastal setting.

Super fresh seafood. I liked the grouper and mahi. The fried mushrooms are great to share with 3-4 people. Outdoor seating near the party boats makes you wish you were fishing. Order food, sit down, and they bring it to you. Great service!

  • Deirdre H.

New owners and better choices for healthy eating. I recommend the grilled grouper and scallops or the mango snapper. This is a fish market/ grill. So don't expect 5 star dining but expect great food served in a basket with fries, slaw and hush puppies or salad. The place is impeccably clean and the staff is very welcoming. After you eat, pick up some items to take home. There's nothing like fresh Mayport shrimp, blue crab and our local favorites- grouper, snapper and basa.

This place has really fresh, delicious food. The batter on the fried foods is light, crispy, and flavorful. We enjoyed everything we had. This included: Fried Basa: light, flaky, and delicious Fried shrimp: large, good batter Blackened shrimp: really good with just enough spice. clam chowder (excellent), deviled crab, and hush puppies. This place was the food highlight of our trip to Jacksonville.

Delicious!! Fast service, fresh fish, and fried dough balls (aka hush puppies), what could be better?! This place was a great hole in the wall that I chose to stop at based off other recs from friends. The shrimp is soooo fresh and sweet. I ordered a basket of grilled shrimp, which comes with fries and a couple hush puppies, and I also ordered a side of hush puppies. The hush puppies are served with a yummy Asian sweet chili sauce, and the shrimp with cocktail sauce. Ask for a side of tartar sauce for the fries, and douse them in some malt vinegar! Delicious. Would definitely come back!!

Safe Harbor is one of those one of a kind places you are lucky to find. My friend and I were vacationing in the Mayport area and we ran into a Walgreens for a few things. We asked the cashier if she could recommend a good place to eat seafood and the gentleman in line behind us told us about Safe Harbor. If you sir are reading this, thanks so much! It is both a market where you can buy and cook your own fresh off the boat seafood or even better they will cook it for you. If you are looking for a romantic dining experience this is not it. If you want fresh fried seafood this is the place. When you walk in the front door you will see and smell lots of fish. There are a few tables inside but most are outside. We chose outside in the fresh air. I would not recommend going if it is too hot to sit outside. I tried the mahi mahi and she had shrimp. Wow, it was so good we went back the next day. Then a few weeks later my husband and I were vacationing a few days in Mayport and we ate there upon arrival and as we were leaving. They also honor the military with a discount. What more can I say. A true 5 star eatery.

Wine in a plastic cup? YES! Come for an authentic dockside ambience, stay for the food. Don't be fooled by the casual dining, this place has the best seafood that is so fresh the fish practically swim to your plate. I judge Florida seafood places by their Florida grouper, and Safe Harbor wins the blue ribbon. My only complaint? More veggie selections would be nice. I know cole slaw is easy to prep and keeps well, and their slaw is good. Yes, they have salads. I'm thinking of something like collards to complete the Southern feel. I feel bad even making this minor observation. :D Plan to slow down and enjoy your afternoon when you visit. This place will grab hold of you and soothe your soul.

I just had to leave a review after enjoying a delicious lunch at Safe Harbor. We had been to other local seafood places and been underwhelmed so I wasn't expecting much here. I was pleasantly surprised! We ordered the blackened shrimp po' boy and crab cake melt. The kids shared the fish bites meal. The crab cake melt was my favorite but the seasoning in both dishes made them by far better than anything else we have had in Mayport. If you enjoy fresh seafood that is more than just battered and fried to death, this place is for you!

  • Susan P.

I had the basa basket. It was very good. Fish was very soft and moist. My husband had the crab cake basket. He said it was ok but he wouldn't get it again. The clam chowder was excellent! We will be back. We sat outside looking at the water. Very nice.

I have been dying to try Safe Harbor Seafood Market and Restaurant for a while, but we can never get out there when they are open. Last weekend I had an opportunity (Ivan was off on Saturday), so we finally got to check it out! We got there around noon and the place was packed. It's not your typical restaurant in so many ways. The main way is, it is also a seafood market. When you walk in the door, the first thing you see is fish counters. There are counters running the length of the restaurant with all kinds of different fresh fish. I also found out that Safe Harbor supplies a lot of the local seafood restaurants in town. I thought that was pretty cool. Another difference is the way you order. You order at the counter, get a number and sit down, and they bring the food out to you. By the time we got there, the line was already to the door but it moved pretty fast. One of the neat things about Safe Harbor is that you can see right into the kitchen from the counter. The workers are back there preparing the restaurant food as well as preparing the fresh fish for the market. I absolutely love it when you can see in the kitchen. It is one of my favorite things :) We ordered our food and took a seat outside. Our food didn't take that long to come out, but we were enjoying the nice weather and the lovely view, so we wouldn't have minded if it did. For an appetizer we got the Fried Mushrooms. My husband doesn't like mushrooms, so these were all mine! The mushrooms were breaded, fried, and served with a side of dressing (we think it was thousand island dressing). The mushrooms were nicely cooked and juicy while the breading gave it a nice crunch. I didn't think I could, but I ate the whole thing!! For my meal, I got the Combo Basket with Crab Cake and Scallops (grilled). It came with cole slaw, fries, and hush puppies. The crab cake was rather large and was so tender that it nearly fell apart when I ran my fork through it. There were lots of crab in there and not a lot of filler. I got the scallops grilled and they were delicious. After a few bad scallop meals recently (see previous blog posts), I was really excited to get some good ones! There were only 4 scallops in the basket, but they were big and I wasn't left feeling like I needed more. They were cooked perfectly and were so soft that I was able to cut them with my fork. I usually like to dip scallops in ranch (what don't I like to dip in ranch??), but these were really good with just the butter that was melted on top. The fries were of the average crinkle variety, but still tasted good. They were crisp and hot and far from soggy (like some other places that shall remain nameless.) The hushpuppies were also a winner. There were 2 in the basket and I ate both. It was a feat after eating everything else, but I managed to do it! My husband also got the Combo Basket, but got Crab Cake and Shrimp (fried). His basket also came with cole slaw, fries, and hush puppies. Ivan's description of the shrimp is that they were plump, tender, and perfectly breaded. He was also impressed with the crab cake and proceeded to eat in silence while he devoured everything! The verdict-Loved it! We thought the prices were great and the food was spectacular. The view from outside is beautiful and if you buy something from the market, they even have a fish cleaning station outside for you to use! The pelicans have figured this out and have taken up residence by the dock.

I don't hand out too many five-star reviews, but Safe Harbor gets one and here's why. First, my favorite type of food in the world is seafood and this stuff is literally fresh out of the water. In fact, if you dine outside on the patio, you can see the boats that dragged in the fresh seafood that morning/afternoon. Second, the dining area is big enough where you can have your own space, but not too large where you feel like you're dining in a banquet hall. Third, there is nothing trendy or hipster or over-the-top about this place. It doesn't try to be more than it is. There's no music playing over the speakers; the wait staff is blue-collar men and women who give you a quick comforting smile and your food. No shirt and tie and jacket event here, just the freshest shrimp and snapper and grouper you can get. Added benefit, this is a seafood market. Fresh fish and scallops and shrimp on ice, sold by the pound. Finally, I like this place because everything is calm and quiet and the air up there smells of ocean salt and rust. I'd love to see the menu expanded. Other than that, this place is a tiny subsidiary of heaven.

There are restaurants that impress your friends because they have menu items like Pancetta, Risotto and Iberico Ham. But then there are restaurants like Safe Harbor that impresses your friends because it is a hard to find jewel with great fresh Seafood. First off, it is out of the way, it is almost to the Mayport Ferry, in a less than stellar area of Jacksonville. It is part restaurant and part seafood store and both are exceptional. Take a moment to browse their seafood items and then peruse the specials before you step up to the counter to order. Once you decide on your seafood, make sure you include a spinach cake as a side....they are incredible. You then take a seat outside and enjoy the fresh ocean air until they call your number. Once your number is called, be prepared for some great seafood. Don't be afraid to ask for special orders or ask questions about what is freshest or staff's personal favorites, the staff is always ready to help. And clean? This place is always clean and has a fresh smell you notice as soon as you walk inside. Dress down, be laid back and impress your friends that you know about this really cool spot.

This place is amazing. First of all, when you walk in you don't smell fish. That is how fresh and clean it is! And OMG do they have fish, tons of it and it comes right off the boats from the docks at their back door! Snapper, flounder, bass, shrimp, crayfish, clams, oysters........... The little restaurant here is kinda like diner style. There is no wait staff and you place your order at the counter. But do not be fooled by the casual atmosphere, you are about to eat the freshest seafood you have ever had. Smoked Fish Dip $3.95, Shrimp Dip $3.95, Crab Dip $3.95, yep, I bought all three and it was very difficult for me to share with my own children. When we happened in the soup of the day was Clam Chowder. I do believe it was the best I have ever had.

This is one of my favorite seafood joints. The wait time may be a little long but it is well worth it - the food comes hot, fresh and delicious. If you purchase fresh seafood the staff wraps your fish on ice and will supply a box to take it home. Excellent!!

My sister just had her birthday dinner here, and there were 13 of us who went... Safe Harbor had no problem seating us. All of us, especially the kids, enjoyed looking out at the shrimp boats and the sea gulls. Everything was fresh, hot, and amazingly delicious. Even the fries were good! My personal favorite was the fried oysters. Mmm! At the recommendation of others, we sampled both the fish dip, and the spinach cakes, and yes they are very good. We all felt that it was a fair price for the food, and the shrimp and oysters were awesome!! I highly recommend Safe Harbor... and hubby and I have already decided we'll have our anniversary dinner there! :)

We were visiting St Marys Island and wanted a good place to eat and nothing was catching our eye there my Husband found this on yelp. I do not mind driving 45 min for good food. Great place reasonable prices. Had grouper basket, shrimp basket and flounder basket added spinach cake and green beans. Food very good. A little hard to get a table because it was so busy but still worth the hassle for food and view

Their selection of local, wild fresh seafood is very good.

I order seafood from them whenever I have a special occasion. For Christmas 2013 I ordered 3 lbs of steamed shrimp and 2 pints of raw of raw oysters. The shrimp was cooked perfectly with just the right amount of seasoning. The OYSTER WERE HUGE AND SOME OF THE BEST I'VE EVER HAD. Great job Safe Harbor, I look forward to ordering from them again very soon!

Really is as good as it gets. The restaurant is a little small but we had no problem getting a table and the service was great. We ordered a number of menu items including the conch fritters and peel and eat shrimp and everything was fresh and delicious. The red snapper was juicy and tasted like it was just pulled from the Ocean. The only bad thing is that I will have to drive from Orlando to eat here again. Good Job best Seafood around!!!!

We haven't eaten at the restaurant, but we drive out to Mayport to buy shrimp from the dock across the street from Safe Harbor. It is always super fresh and delicious and the prices are very reasonable!

Although I have never eaten in the restaurant, the market is fantastic. People that live near the ocean should really appreciate having such a variety of fresh seafood available. The quality and variety here are awesome. Seems like there are always species of fish here that I've never seen or heard of before. Maybe this is the tourist in me, but I find the Ferry next door entertaining (especially the captain). A couple of years ago, my family purchased a bunch of seafood from Safe Harbor for our Christmas dinner. Scallops, crab, snapper, mussles, seabass, it was all delicious and good quality.

Well, I wanted to try some good seafood and this place had good reviews so I made the pretty long drive to get to it...twice. Since I've never had the fried soft shell crab before, I had to try their basket. I also wanted their "famous" smoked fish dip but they were out so settled on the shrimp dip. The crab was ok, the dip was ok. On my way out, decided to grab some red clam chowder to eat later. That turned out to be really good. The second time there, I ordered the shrimp plate and a grilled fish plate to go. When I opened them up later, I was a little surprised, not at the taste but the quantity. The taste was good but the quantity was lacking, especially for the price. In conclusion, the food is good but overpriced, especially considering the ambiance is way below average (let's just say that a typical McDonald's decor would be an improvement). And when you consider it's in the middle of nowhere.... For the money, you can eat at a much nicer restaurant.
