Peony Asian Bistro Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

Ok, the only reason that we haven't tried Peony before is because they don't open until 11:30 and our lunch generally starts at 11:00 but today we decided to leave just a few minutes later so we could try it out. Let me just say AWESOME! I had the Singapore style rice noodles and the BBQ pork and shrimp with the veggies were all perfect. The price is reasonable, the food has more of an authentic feel vs buffet style or fast food style restaurants. I am very happy that we decided to swing in here. I literally can't wait to come back and try them again. If you're in the mandarin area and want something delicious and different from the "normal" Chinese fare, then stop in at Peony, you definitely won't regret it!

Started out as an audition to replace "our" family Chinese restaurant, ended up as a great dining experience. The atmosphere at Peony is relaxed and casual. The staff was friendly and attentive. Most important the food was outstanding. With every style of restaurant I have a "go to" dish that is generally a good indicator of the quality of the kitchen. With Chinese places it is the egg drop soup. The egg drop at Peony hits the spot. The entrees we ordered were delicious and the portions hearty. My son's sweet and sour chicken was fresh and the sauce was not the typical fluorescent pink goop. I highly recommend the Young Chow fried rice. Best of all was the crowd of elderly Chinese people who were clearly enjoying themselves and the food. I highly recommend Peony to anyone looking for some really good Chinese food for lunch or dinner.

When you see a whole Chinese family enjoying a round-table meal with some contented members smoking outside, be assured that you are in for real deal. PAB serves some authentic and great tasting Chinese food with Cantonese influence. The inside is simple with wooden tables and chairs and few decorations to give the Chinese accent. I got people's favorite roasted duck. It was crispy on outside and succulent inside, a bird cooked perfectly so as not to render mushiness. The juice that settled on the bottom of the to-go box when lightly used on the meat made it even heavenly and didn't need any extra condiments. It was really good and it being 1/2 order was more than enough for two person and just 11.99. The fried rice that came with it was alright, just a basic rice most likely fried in the duck's fat, I was expecting at least few pieces of peas or some other veggies. This meal is just a precursor of many good meals I hope to enjoy at this fantastic establishment; if you haven't graced this place yet, you better do it at the next available opportunity.

Absolutely, delicious, authentic, Chinese food. Not that weird, quick, Americanized version. Everything I ordered was incredibly well prepared, well seasoned, fresh. The service was awesome as well. I already can't wait to come back!

Awesome food. The DUCK, beef, and ribs were excellent! This is a local restaurant but the quality is top notch. You can take my word but you should try and enjoy for yourself. Just darn good.

Excellent, close to authentic Chinese food. It is a shame it is in a dumpy strip mall. Inside is very nice and clean. The food is really, really good.Jax Yelpers got it going on. This is the 4th or 5th Yelp recommendation and it met the 4.5 star rating. Very impressed and it helped that the waiter was knowledgeable about what all the crazy Chinese terms meant. I tried one of the steamer pots. The wife went with the orange chicken. We both agreed our meals were as good as you could ask for at dinner.

In a world of Panda Express and Asian fusion, this seems to me to be the closest thing to authentic Chinese food in Jacksonville. The meals were served family style and the five of us all ordered something different. This is a great place to explore something different.

I have been coming to peonys for a while now and I gotta say that the food is pretty consistent. I always get their beef and tofu soup with cilantro. It's got the consistency of egg drop soup, with little chunks of beef and tofu bits. My favorite soup that they sell there! The beef chow fun is really good too. I personally do not like the one with the black bean sauce because the black beans can be a bit bitter but the normal one is the best. I always pay extra to get veggies added to it which gives it that extra saucy texture. My husband absolutely loves the roast pork with aged vegetables in a hot pot. It's like chunks of bacon (not crispy, more gelatinous) with some boiled down veggies. While I may not personally like it because it's too fatty my husband loves it! Definitely an acquired taste. The roast pork off their appetizer menu is a must! Super yummy! Especially when you put it into a freshly steamed bun with some hoisen sauce!!! Yummy!!! The seafood pan fried noodle also has a very good sauce and its served hot enough that it softens the bird nest of noodles. They were very accommodating to switching out the mussels for chicken which was awesome! The service can be a bit difficult. It can be slow or the servers forget stuff. It's very basic to just barely meet your needs. But it's understandable because there is only 1 or 2 servers max for the whole restaurant. Don't get me wrong, the servers themselves are very nice and friendly when they do interact. The price of the food can be pricy. Especially since there is hardly any places, if any at all, where you can find traditional Chinese food. Overall I would give this place a 3.5 but since I can't do halves I'll be generous and do a 4 since I do enjoy the food.

This is the right restaurant for those who like big portions of Asian food. Apart from being delicious, the portions are bigger than any other asian food restaurant. So, there you have it!

OUTSTANDING!! I mean anything you choose will be amazing! Favorite appetizers are chicken lettuce wraps, dumplings & calamari! I absolutely love the General chicken, Mongolia chicken, & also the orange chicken! ( its not on the menu but if its not too busy they will make it ) this place is soooo much better then ANY chinese delivery. And its so cheap!! Ask for Stephen hes a great server!

This bistro has been here for a while. I visited this place at least 20 times in the last 3 yrs. Just recently i started yelp g and have come three times in the last couple of weeks. I liked and enjoy mist of the dishes here. The staff is cordial and helpful and they take care of the customers the best they can. At times they get so busy that they tend to forget you. We usually order 4 or 5 dishes and we share the food among all of us. During my lasts visits i notice the difference of portions between regular customers and new customers. My slt and pepper seuid i order was a rather small portionthan the one served to two tables down. Our plate had about 10 nuggets of squid and the plate 2 tables doen was served with about 30 nuggets of squid. I looked at the menu and there is only one size serving. Same situation i noticed with fried tofu served to two different tables. Then i noticed that the server was spending and talking to the bigger size portion customers. But other than that food is very well prepared for flavor and consistency. I will go back and hopefully am wrong in my perception of portion size that is why i did not go 5 stars

How have I never written a review for Peonies! ? Oh my gosh, this is such a hidden gem in mandarin. ... in my opinion the best Chinese food around! We have been coming here for about the last year. We even get take out anytime we are feeling Chinese food. Everything is so good! !! Really, we usually get a few starters.... crab rangoon, spring rolls, maybe some soup. For entrees you can't go wrong. .. we usually get a noodle dish, my particular favorite is the Singapore street noodles. .. thin noodles, shrimp, pork, chicken some veggie all mixed in a spicy kinda curry sauce, delish! !!!! The house combo fried rice is another favorite of my family. The servers there are also so wonderful, exceptionally nice and remember us every time we come in! Highly recommend!

Had a pretty good lunch. We started with the appetizer sampler which was good to try a few things since it was the first time we had been there. Also had the Peking duck which was awesome. The house chow fun had a great flavor and the lo mein looked par for the course for a sit down place. The atmosphere as nice. My only issue was the server had the tray off balance so she spilled part of aThai tea and a glass water all over us. I honestly wasn't upset and she felt bad and apologized but didn't come back with a full Thai tea and also didn't remove it from the check which I thought should have been done.

The following review was published under my byline in the Florida Times-Union on Saturday, March 21, 2015. This is an original, unabridged version of that review. If you're going to open a Chinese restaurant in Jacksonville, it's not a bad idea to start in a part of town called Mandarin. The owners of Peony Asian Bistro at Old St. Augustine and Hartley roads checked that box when they brought their authentic Cantonese creations to this slice of suburbia five years ago. Since then, it's obvious the location they've been investing in most is the kitchen. Peony's menu boasts a plethora of authentic and more widely known Chinese favorites, spread among appetizers, soups and noodle bowls, entrees, specialty (stir-fry) pots, noodles and rice dishes. The dining room is simple and modern, with lots of golden wood accents, from the tables to the ceiling tiles. You'll also find plenty of large, circular tables for family gatherings. Daily specials are scrawled on a large whiteboard at the front door. We visited on a relatively quiet Wednesday night, at which time we found a smattering of tables occupied by what seemed to be regulars. That's always a good sign for a neighborhood restaurant during the middle of the week. We got to work with two appetizers. First up: the steamed Pork & Veggie Dumplings ($5.95). This substantial platter of seven dumplings came with a tangy, semi-sweet dipping sauce. The meat was steamed to perfection and there was no excessive doughiness, but they struck me as a bit on the soggy side. I'll endure the additional calories and ask for them pan-fried my next trip. Our other choice for starter, the Krabmeat Rangoon ($5.95) pieces were smaller than I was used to but packed a huge flavor punch with imitation crabmeat, onion and cream cheese in spherical, golden-brown packages. The sweet chili dipping sauce was outstanding. Entrees here go to the middle of the table for family-style consumption. I didn't mind reaching across to check out my friend's order of Kung Pao Chicken ($9.95). It was a plentiful mound of tender chicken slices, sautéed with crisp diced celery, carrots, zucchini and onion in a spicy brown sauce. A garnish of peanuts topped the sautéed mix and gave a satisfying crunch as a foil to the meat and veggies below. This entrée also came with a side of Plain Fried Rice ($1.50 as an a la carte option). That description says it all. My contribution to the center of the table, the House Lomein ($9.95), was some serious Chinese comfort food. The soft noodles folded around crisp bean sprouts and lots of shrimp, chicken and barbecue pork. It was buttery, melt-in-your-mouth goodness all around. As usual, my sweet tooth soon turned to visions of dessert trays. While the takeout menu reports a short list of sweet treats such as fried mantou (steamed buns) and fried cheesecake, our server told us none were available that night. That's a shame. For beverages, you'll find Coca-Cola products and a limited selection of bottled brews, including native Chinese Tsingtao and, curiously, two Japanese selections, Sapporo and Ichiban. Plum wine, hot or cold sake and Western vintages are available by the glass only, as are Thai and jasmine tea and a selection of frozen smoothies. While there was no question about our server's friendliness and effort, the dining room was seriously short-staffed. At times, he seemed to gallop between tables to keep up, including occasional dashes to the cash register. Service slowdowns notwithstanding, Peony Asian Bistro has a lot going on right in its kitchen and is worth your dine time if you're a fan of authentic Chinese cuisine. I have no idea what people are raving about. I went here specifically because of all of the reviews saying this place has amazing Peking Duck. Unfortunately, the Peking Duck comes with a sort of rice biscuit instead of the standard rice pancake (see pictures). I couldn't figure out how you're supposed to eat it, the biscuits weren't any good, and even the duck wasn't very good. Are we this starved for proper Chinese food that this is what counts? Beyond this, the dining area is not very comfortable, and the building/strip mall is trashy. At our table, we ended up with a speaker blaring behind someone's head, and he got a headache. Obviously their sound system is unbalanced, because they're trying to cover the strangely shaped restaurant with too few speakers that are turned up far too loud. Really, a thoroughly unpleasant and disappointing experience.

Tucked away in a strip mall Peony Asian Bistro is a tasty option for fresh Chinese food with a New York feel. The Wonton Soup was delicious, with a nice sesame oil back-bone that added decent depth. Meat sampler was ok- the chicken was a tad dry and fatty with little meat. The black bean shrimp was a let down- mainly because it wasn't really a black bean sauce- more of a stir fry with a few fermented beans tossed in. Shrimp was not the freshest either. Salt and pepper tofu and fish was good- the standout being the tofu- it's the silken variety which offers a great custardy finish to an otherwise crispy bite. Overall the food was decent- standard Chinatown fare- something not that easy to find in this town. Mindblowingly good however? No.

This was my first visit and it definitely won't be my last. I ordered about a million things to go and it was all good. I got the half order of Peking duck, sesame chicken, generals chicken, egg rolls and steamed dumplings. It was a feast of some good ass Asian cuisine and every bit of it was good. Seasoned well, hot, tasty. Most Chinese places make the food and sauces too sweet. None of that here at Peony's. I think I finally found my go to place in Peony's. I can't wait to head back.

The best Cantonese food in town!!! Great taste!! We always enjoy eating there all the time. Peking duck, crispy chicken, sweet & sour pork, steamed fish, veggies, walnut shrimps, beef chow fun, Yeung chow fried rice etc. are our usual food.

Since my last review, I have been back to Peony's a number of times and they have consistently delighted me with wonderfully prepared dishes. I previously rated this establishment a 3; however, I knew they would prove to be worthy of a 5 star rating. This place is just wonderful. Authentic Chinese food that is simply delicious. I love Peony Asian Bistro. Honestly, there is nothing more to be said. TREAT YOURSELF!!!!!

I'm not sure who is writing those five star reviews and why??? Someone else said something similar on another review and I just can't help but to agree. My family and friends came here we tried the duck, pork and two different kind of rice amongst other stuff on the menu and we all agreed there was nothing special to rave about. The food had no flavor, I expected much more. As a former New Yorker strolling in NYC stopping at China town to eat asian roast duck was always something I look forward to. Honestly Part of me wanted this place to be my go to place for roast duck, guess not. I highly doubt this is authentic Asian food, no way can such ethnic food be so dull. I love and have eaten all type of cultural food, Asian, Indian, Middle Eastern, Cajun you name it. This establishment is not worthy of the praises I'm seeing, don't believe me? Give them a try yourself.

Fresh authentic Chinese food. Great vegetables and greens. Noodle soups are spot on. If you like Duck or Peking Duck than you will like Peony. Pan fried dumplings are really good as well.

Oh man the Peking duck. Just oh man. Crispy skin, juicy, moist delectable meat, soft buns....nommmssss. I'm pretty sure this is the best Chinese food I've had outside of China Town in NYC. And the place is ALWAYS packed with Asian families eating dinner, so it has to be right on the money, right? And there are a lot of things on the menu I neither understand, nor can pronounce, but nevertheless, I'll still order them all. I've tried the Chinese broccoli, and considering my love of garlic, this was one of the most amazing veggie dishes I've ever had out. I think they used a whole head. And the salt and pepper ANYTHING is the bomb.com . The seafood soup is pretty stellar too. Although I pick out the pink, scary, K - krab. Why do people even use this stuff? Gross. Two cautions here: 1) Pay attention to their hours, and call ahead. I've stopped by several times and they were closed for various reasons....one time I think they were steam cleaning the carpet. I was not happy about getting my duck craving denied. But I went back the next night and all was right with the world again. And 2) Don't be intimidated by the menu if you go. Ask the hostess, who will happily point you to things to try.

It was good but I paid 22 for Seseme Chicken and rice with 2 egg rolls no that is just too expensive for me. It was good food but i give them the less star for the price for 22$ i should have been able to feel 2 people or myself 2 times.

I'm a Chinese American from Hong Kong and grew up in California. I just moved here two years ago, and I had been craving some real Chinese food. Peony Asian Bistro seems to be what all the Asians are talking about around town. I first heard of this place from an Asian friend of mine from Hong Kong. She recommended this place to me for some authentic Chinese cuisine. I have only been here once for lunch with my wife, and we had the duck noodle soup and the wonton soup. Both of our soups were excellent as were our noodles, ducks, and wontons. It was also very cheap! It was a bit weird that there were only two large slices of lettuce in each of our soup. I cannot wait till I come back here for dinner and order the bigger dinner dishes.

Food was very good. Servers were nice, but either inexperienced or not very good. Not very attentive, had to ask for things and EXTREMLY slow. If you have a lot of time and patience food is worth a try. Just don't go with more than 2 people. That is servers limit.

Food was very good, curry was just right and very fresh. Service was excellent and fast considering how busy it was. The only thing lacking was they do not have any deserts.

My brother came to visit and wanted Asian food. I bought tickets to see Russel Peters at Comedy Zone/Ramada so I used the nifty map search feature in Yelp, sorted by rankings, and found this place. It was excellent. Notes: - let the staff know if you have any dietary restrictions and than ask again when the food comes out (all the soups have a pork broth) - the food is authentic Chinese and there are plenty of people that know this eating there if you don't believe me, the non-Chinese person - the wait staff were slightly overwhelmed that night; the manager apologized to us and explained they had just let someone go and he was trying to find a replacement so that explanation helped It's a small restaurant in a shopping plaza and nothing fancy, but the food is really good, served hot and efficiently, and that's what I look for in a place like this. Well done, Peony team.

It's comforting to know that there's a decent authentic Chinese restaurant nearby. Although it's not on the level of LA, New York, San Francisco, and Chicago "China town restaurants" ,it's the best for Jacksonville. I was craving for snow pea tips but the owner told me that it's way too expensive for her to serve it in her restaurant because the customers are complaining about the price. !! I had to settle for the water spinach. I did enjoy the pork with dried tofu. I'm very satisfied with the service and the quality of food. I will be back! They did get busy and there was a 10 min wait for a table.

My first meal inside Peony's was a delight. The staff was extremely polite and attentive and that must carryover to the food preparation since the Honey Walnut Shrimp was the perfect texture and taste. The chicken only eggrolls are the thinner nouvelle type but delicious. The hot and sour soup cup is a huge generous portion. I will definitely be back to try the black bean fish and other items from the huge menu.

  • Tabitha B.

Pleasantly surprised that the interior was really nice for being in a strip mall, but it doesn't end there. The food was perfect, the streamed dumplings were really good and the sesame chicken was the best I've ever had. It was a bit pricey for the portions, but I don't eat a ton in one sitting so I ended up with two meals for the price of one.

  • Sharlie H.

As you can see in the reviews the food is great. I wanted to comment on the server we had last night that was so accommodating for people with children. He brought extra napkins without even having to ask. He even heard a friend say she was only having the broth from the soup and brought her bowl empty so she could serve what she wanted out of the soup. He was very attentive and accommodating!

I read the write-up in the TU and thought I'd give it a try since it's next to a nursing home my mom is in. The services was great, even though they were busy with a large party. The food was out of this world! The portion would have been enough to share if I had not been alone..... and the prices are very reasonable. I like the place and will return. I'm just sorry I haven't given it a try sooner! Keep up the great work!!

If you don't like tofu, they will make you a believer. I've been looking for an authentic Chinese spot that my wife and I could visit on a regular since moving to Jacksonville. I guess I have become very picky about my Chinese intake because we usually consider Chinese, date night food. Well for my wife's birthday dinner I gave her two restaurants to pick from. Thank God she was in the mood for Chinese, so to Phoney Asian Bistro we went. Walking into the restaurant you are instantly hit with a family style atmosphere. The two large tables in the front made me wish that we had a group to share a big meal. The host was very pleasant and inviting. The waiter took a little longer to appear then I would like but he made up for it with excellent service. He explained the specials down to the sauces. He shared his favorite items and why. We had a lot of choices on our hands. The ladies at the table beside us overheard our debating over what to order and started explains their favorites and what they had ordered. We talked for a while which made it feel like a family meal. I ordered the Peking Duck and my wife ordered the hot pot house special (squid, chicken, shrimp, tofu, pork and vegetables w/ brown gravy). The food came out fairly quickly. My duck had a crispy skin and moist. I am a huge fan of duck and this is some of the best Peking Duck I ever had. My wife's hot pot was something special. It came out in a little hot ceramic pot with a side of plain fried rice. Everything about this pot was delicious. My wife didn't care for the squid but I helped her out. The thing that surprise me the most was the tofu, they really made me a believer. It was loaded with flavor and had me craving more. To end the meal we were given slice oranges and guava candy, which I asked for extra on my way out the door. (Addicted? YES) I can't see anyone having a bad experience at this place. The food was excellent, great dinning experience, friendly and knowledgable wait staff what more could you asked for. We have officially found our Chinese food place in Jacksonville.

Great authentic Cantonese Chinese food. Been there a few times now. Will definitely be back. My favorite is still the Peking Duck, but there are so many other great dishes. The place does a great business. Each time I've been there, it has been quite busy. And for good reason. They do it well. Prices and portions are decent. Most dishes in the $8-12 range.

Simply delicious. The staff is friendly and welcoming. The quality of the food here is above any chinese we've had in jacksonville. We ordered the krab rangoon, chicken fried rice and the sweet chili chicken. It was worth every penny, yum!

My fourth time here and never disappointed. The portions are huge, the quality excellent and the reasonable prices a bonus. Don't let Mario's name or non-Asian features fool you; his in-depth food knowledge adds another layer of enjoyment to the ordering process.

This is my second trip here. I would be a regular but I live far far away from this spot. Good and bad for me. Anyway I wanted to take the dining group here for the quality of the food and the Peking Duck. I am a huge fan, Duck and it's crispy brown skin just dripping in tastebuds snapping richness. We started with the Hot and Sour Soup the broth was flavorful and thicker than normal. First taste the sour catches you and then the heat balances it out. Thinly sliced veggies, tofu, mushrooms add a nice bulk to the soup but does not feel heavy. Next the Steamed Meat Dumplings, nice skins not thick and chewy that leave a sticky after taste. Stuffing was plentiful and nicely seasoned. One order of mixed 2 piece sampler consisted of Peking Duck and BBQ Ribs. The Duck perfect as always and the ribs sweet sticky flavor that only the Asians know how to make. Just delightful. There were 3 takers for the Duck, 1 Chicken and Eggplant, a Gen's Tso Chicken, Sweet and Sour Chicken and Shrimp and Broccoli. Ample portions all around served with the usual white rice. The Duck by far was the winner the other dishes declared wonderful by their owners. After the meal a real treat fresh orange slices no bad cookies for us. Service is acceptable and courteous. This is the most authentic Chineese I have found here in J'ville. Take yourself and your friends. They will not be dissatisfied.

Coming from Houston, which has a large population of Asian Americans and Asian cuisine, I have been feeling out of place since returning to Jacksonville. For the last nine months I have scoured the city searching for some legit food. I won't lie, very few have passed the test and even less will see me return to eat at their restaurants. Welp, Peonys is one of them. This place is the real deal. The food is fresh and delicious. The portions are pretty big and the price was not bad either. The servers and hosts are so (read: sincere and warm) friendly that they put me in a good mood when I wasn't really feeling it today. I walked in during a really busy shift and was seated within about ten minutes. I was perfectly fine with waiting but the host was not okay with that. He apologized for the wait a few times and didn't charge me for my drink because of my "inconvenience". This was a nice and unexpected small gesture. I will return to Peony for sure.

Unfortunately, even though their staff is friendly and the restaurant is a simple and clean....the food is simply underwhelming. I had the salt and pepper squid which was very oily and almost under cooked, the pork and duck appetizer was dry ( the duck was juicy but underseasoned), the shrimp and pork wonton had that nasty old frozen shrimp taste...the one dish that was decent was the house special combo pot with tofu, shrimp, squid and chicken....I wish I could say better things but it's definitely not worth going back to unless they change their chef, sorry.

Great service and great food. Very impressed with the quality of the ingredients. We had the Two Sampler, roasted duck and pork. We really enjoyed the duck, we also ordered salt and pepper scallops and steamed Chilean seabass. The bass was very well prepared. Definitely will return on another trip to Jax.

This was my first time coming here, and my experience was very outstanding. Even though it took over 30 minutes to be seated and 5 minutes for the server to come start serving my group (which is understandable since the restaurant was completely packed full, and he was very busy), the delicious food outweighed everything else. I had the Salt And Pepper Squid, and it really made my taste buds go pop, which is a good thing. The one unfortunate thing that happened tonight was that they ran out of the Peking Duck, which a person in my group ordered. But this can definitely be forgiven, given this restaurant's high popularity. Will I be back? I can definitely say YES!

I sometimes wonder why I don't go to Peony more often... a lot more often. I mean, I know they have good authentic Chinese food. Just the other day, when pondering where to go for a good plate of fried rice and some yummy Chinese stir fry dishes with my husband and a good friend, my husband actually asks, "why don't you ever think of going to Peony?" eh.... yeah, it's been like a whole year since we last went. So we went and ordered waaaay too much... to the point the server actually asked if we knew these are large/sharable plates. Yes... yes we know. We just like to eat a lot. Anyways, we ordered salted fish and chicken fried rice, Chinese broccoli, walnut shrimp, beef ho fen, some spicy chicken stir fried dish and a couple other dishes that I forgot (yeah it was alot for three people). We had a great time eating, chatting, eating, and eating, and eating... We really should put Peony in our regular rotation of go-to restaurants....

Decent Chinese restaurant. What's really nice is, it is an actual restaurant, not just a take out service. Portion was good size. Flavorful food. Egg rolls are not traditional. More like spring rolls but very good. Definitely would return.

We moved to the St. John's area and were disappointed that we couldn't find an authentic Chinese restaurant. Not anymore! This restaurant is amazing. The food is the best we can recall. We will be regulars!

The food is fresh and delicious. The shrimp are cooked to perfection. The wait staff...needs to be cloned for all other restaurants. Each member of the team makes sure you are happy with your meal and that everything is to your satisfaction. All though the place was medium busy the wait staff treat your table as you are the only guest superb! Definitely making Peony's a go to place.

We live really close and we notice this place. Don't be fooled by the location or place, the food and service is outstanding. The food quality is incredible. Good flavors. I will highly recommend this place. I wish it is more crowded.

3.5 stars - after reading all the excellent reviews on this place, I decided to come out and try it one night with my son. I believe Lea A's review is most accurate in my opinion - the food is pretty decent and is probably the best you're going to get in Jacksonville, but I'm not sure about all the five star reviews. I had their Beef Chow Fun and unfortunately my son got their Chicken Chow Fun (I should have just changed my order to Beef Pan Fried Noodles but I didn't think about it until it was too late). Both dishes were pretty good but nothing spectacular. I think what disappointed me the most about this place were: 1. Our server served my son a soda with a bug in it - and still charged us for it!! 2. Even though I kept asking our server about Dim Sum, the owner or "Head Person" never came over to meet us (I am Chinese while my son is half and half). I expected more - at least to meet a new patron and make sure they enjoyed their meal. 3. They broke the "unspoken rule" - they charged my son for a very small bowl of rice!! Our server did admit he just started a few days earlier, so my disappointment was not with him (I still left him a pretty good tip) - I was very disappointed more in the owner or manager. They did seem to have a pretty good neighborhood following so maybe that's why the owner/ manager didn't care(?). I believe I will give them another chance but I did want to be honest about my first visit here.

One of the best Chinese restaurants in Jacksonville! Might even be top 3! Must try their pecking duck! Anything salt and pepper is amazing!! The staff is very knowledgeable of the menu and will give you honest recommendations! Love this place!!!!

Our family of four visited the PAB back in December and we just forgot to save this review. We have two children (9 & 11) and we had chicken egg rolls as an appetizer. They were good but the sauce was surprisingly bland. Other than that sauce, however, the food was excellent. In addition to the egg rolls, we also ordered fried calamari. the batter was light and crunchy. Better than the food was the service, which was sincere and aware. We were shocked at how fresh the food was and how quickly it was prepared. it makes you wondered what other restaurants are doing back there (or how many cooks were in the PAB kitchen). We had two orders of General Tso (the first order went so quickly that we had to order another), Sweet & Sour Chicken, and Salt & Pepper Shrimp. It was your classic Sweet & Sour that I do not like but this one was different. It was not overly sweet and syrupy but more light and refreshing paired with the sweetness. Our son devoured it. The S&P Shrimp was my personal favorite. We ordered fried rice and steamed rice to accompany the dishes and found that the fried rice was much better than expected. This is our favorite Asian Bistro in Florida (at the moment).

Well, it happened... I Foodgasmed in Jacksonville over Chinese food. My husband and I found our way here after finding there was a 1.5 hour wait for 2 people at Clark's Fish Camp two miles away. We came on a late Friday night of Easter weekend. The restaurant is located in a corner strip mall with an Asian market that I will check out the next time I'm in this area. Upon walking in my excitement level shot up as I read the Specials board and saw menu items you don't typically see on Chinese menus in Jacksonville, such as Fish & Tofu Hot Pot. The menu featured noodle soups (another plus!), Chicken & Salty Fish Fried Rice (whaaat? You usually see this item in cities with large Chinese populations), chicken/pork/tripe with pickled mustard greens, AND Peking Duck and Roast Duck! We didn't order the Peking Duck but I was excited to see it on the menu and made a mental note to come back to try it. Our friendly waiter Kevin chatted with us and pointed out different popular menu items. I couldn't decide between all the great choices and then he casually mentioned that the cook just got a whole striped bass and that it's not on the menu but they also have steamed whole fish. My heart stopped. A comfort food (to me) that I didn't expect to find in Jacksonville! I ordered it on the stop and he went to have the cook start on it while we finished perusing the menu since it takes a little longer than a typical dish. To go with our 2 pound steamed whole fish with ginger & scallions (about $26), we also ordered Salt & Pepper Tofu, and Chinese BBQ (satay) Beef with Chinese Broccoli. We received individual bowls of rice as well. The fish was perfectly steamed -- tender and moist. Quite a feat for such a large fish! The sauce that the fish is steamed in is the best kind to pour over your fish and rice. I could eat this for days!! The Salt & Pepper Tofu came with fried shallots on top and smelled amazing! The small cubes of tofu were fried but the inside was soft and silky. It's just a great combination of flavors and textures and really hit the spot! The Chinese BBQ Beef is cooked in a light satay sauce with the Chinese broccoli cut into bite-sized pieces. An excellent complement to the other dishes we had - plus, it had greens so our dinner felt more balanced. Along with Kevin, we had another really friendly server named Jessica (I think both of them have been noted by other Yelpers) - both were happy to chat with us and tell us about the restaurant. We were told that you can call in to request particular types of seafood or check to see what they happen to have that weekend - items like lobster, Dungeness crab, clams, different types of fish... My mouth is watering again just thinking about it! I can't wait to go back to try other items on the menu! It's just too bad that it's on the other side of town from us but it's definitely worth the drive for me. We were told they can get pretty busy on the weekends and that the 5-6pm time slot is the best time to beat the crowds. Also, don't forget they are closed on Tuesdays! WE WILL BE BACK!!!

During our first visit, we were promptly greeted, seated, and offered a beverage. The wait staff were all friendly and answered questions in detail regarding the menu. We ordered the chicken egg rolls as an appetizer, which were small but delicious. I ordered the salt and pepper shrimp. They were awesome. Lightly battered and full of flavor. My wife ordered the lo-mien which had shrimp and chicken. She enjoyed it as well. The server brought us watermelon and candies for dessert, which was an added treat. We'll be back... I want to try the duck which was a popular favorite on the menu.

Went with a close friend as this restaurant is 30 minutes from our home. Immediately noticed that decor was above average for a Jacksonville Asian eatery. More importantly you can size up a place by the type of patrons - in this case complete mix of cultures. Also it stood out a few separate tables of affluent customers including a few more of round tables with families. The place was a buzz and lively with conversations. A true Bistro! Now on to the food. We started with the "Shrimp & Pork Wonton Soup" Enough for two or three people to share, clear broth, asian lettuce and several wontons. Then we shared the "Chicken Lettuce Wraps (Large)" and three of us were impressed good mix of meat and onion with crisp traditional lettuce. "Pork Fried Rice" was above average. The we splurged and for main had the full "Peking Duck" that was served with soft buns and sliced onion / cucumbers and of course duck sauce. The Duck had perfect crispy skin and meat was not overly fatty so I would rate above my expectations. Several Yelpers go on about different cities and how authentic various cuisine in Jacksonville misses the mark. NYC, SF CHI, Paris, etc, for Jacksonville Peony Asian Bistro is as good as it gets for its non chain category. And is better than Mr. Chan's by a photo finish. I would prefer to go to Peony as better service and food is slightly more elaborate. The night was complete and our good friend is now moving to LA and he picked Peony as his last supper. Complements Peony Asian Bistro for a rememberable evening.

This place is authentic Chinese. Not that fast food garage that most people are used to. I couldn't believe this place is literally 5 minutes from my house. We ordered the duck & the salted fish chicken hot pot. They were both amazing. I cannot wait to go back to try out new menu options that aren't Sweet and Sour Chicken. Do yourself and favor and try this place out! It's absolutely amazing!

Tried this place in Feb 2014. Service was fast, chicken lo mein noodles were great (I consider this my go to dish at Chinese restaurants). Steamed dumplings were fantastic. Peking duck was amazing! Picture below. My Chinese friends are the ones who recommended the place and say it's very authentic. They go here every week. Would recommend. If you gave a big party on a Friday night make a reservation.

The best Chinese food in Jacksonville. Great service and never had anything bad off the menu. Kevin is the best and is always willing to recommend something off the menu. Can get busy on Friday and Saturday nights so you may have to wait a bit for a table.

Growing up in Philly and living near NYC for years, and being Chinese with both parents who are chefs... I'm so happy I found this place. Keep in mind that you can't compare it to restaurants back home but this place is very good for being in Jacksonville. I was so worried I wasn't going to find good Chinese food. We ordered beef brisket w wonton noodle soup, salt & pepper pork chop and a Thai iced tea. Everything was very good. We will deff be coming back.

Beautiful restaurant. Friendly and cheerful servers (thanks Kevin and Eric) and wonderful food. We had the Peking Duck which was crispy and tender served with steamed buns, and a nice plum sauce, Sweet and Sour pork which was very good, the Water Spinach in garlic sauce, very unusual. I liked it, although had it been cut in smaller peices it would have been easier to eat with chopsticks. My grandson had the roast duck soup with noodles and veggies, a huge steaming bowl which he really enjoyed. We also had an order of the chicken eggrolls which were all chicken, freshly made and crispy with a nice dipping sauce. Aside from the great food and atmosphere, as I mentioned aboved it was our servers Eric and Kevin that made the evening an all around great experience for us all. I'm looking forward to my next visit. Thanks Peony and staff!

First impressions. It's kinda a hole in the wall Chinese food place located in a little strip mall. Inside is very simple looking nothing extraordinary. Place was super busy and had a a lot of customers, which is usually a good sign. Between my wife and I we ordered the Peking duck, salt and pepper tofu/fish, egg drop soup, calamari, fried chitterlings, and Thai tea. Peking duck had crispy skin and tender meat paired with the little steam buns and sweet hoisin sauce were excellent. Salt and pepper tofu/fish was very tasty, lightly battered. Egg drop and calamari were good also. The one thing I wish we didn't order were the chitterlings. My wife wanted to give them a try since she's eaten them before at a KBBQ and loved them. So she ordered some and I tried one , soon as I put it in my mouth and started to chew the hair on my neck stood up and my stomach bubbled. This was probably the most awful thing I've ever eaten. For those of you who never tried chitterlings DONT! It tastes the way a barn smells. With that being said my wife and I just put it off to the side. Other than that every else we ordered was great. The waiter asked what was wrong with chitterlings as to why we didn't eat them, he was very apologetic and offered to give us something else, but we declined. I would definitely recommend this restaurant, just stay away from the chitterlings.

Look, I know my Chinese food, having grew up in Taiwan, traveled all over the world to various Asian countries and all the major Asian populated cities in the US from LA to NYC, I know authentic Chinese food. So with that said, Peony has the most authentic Chinese food in Jacksonville (as evident by the huge tables full of Taiwanese fobs there everytime I visit). Obviously it's not as authentic as the food in major US cities, or even Orlando for that matter, but for Jacksonville, it's really not bad. My favorite dishes are the jelly fish, the fatty pork dishes, and salt and pepper short ribs. Service is great, much better than Mr. Chan's. I am currently on boycott with Mr. Chans due to their poor service and general I don't care attitude, but that's a different review. As for the yelp reviewer that lived in SF and Haiwaii and talking about not having authentic Chinese food, it's laughable especially since the dishes you reviewed are all Americanized. So if you want General Tso Chicken or Orange Chicken, try PF Chan's or your local take out, if you want legit, authentic Chinese food, like you would find at my house when my mom cooks, check out Peony's, it's solid.

Positively the best Chinese food I've had since moving to NE Florida! Nice atmosphere and great service too. I am going to be a regular customer. The food is delicious - make sure to try the Crab Ragoon, steamed dumpings, and roast pork appetisers. And Shrimp with sweet chilis - yum yum!

Excellent food. Love, love, love the peking duck and the double sauteed pork. The salt and pepper chicken wings appetizer is a must. Service can be a little spotty at times but over all is friendly. Would benefit from having more help.

It all depends on the time of day and whether the cook is focused on the task at hand as to your dinning experience. If there's more than three tables occupied then you're in for a wait. It's a coin flip here. The meal can be pretty good or it can be missing some ingredients when it finally arrives at the table.

Well perhaps it's because I've lived in San Francisco and Hawaii and visited many Asian countries but I was not too terribly impressed with the food at Peony. This is not authentic Chinese food and BTW: they use MSG in their dishes. Tucked in a strip mall ( where else? ) in north east Mardarin off Old St. Augustine Road. Brightly lit, pleasant surroundings and quite clean with many Asian folks working in the kitchen. For starters:The fried egg rolls were puny, a tad bit greasy and very ho hum. The large hot & sour soup was more than sufficient for two and although tasty it had an overly thick consistency that indicated too much cornstarch. The Szechwan chicken was way too sweet, almost sickenly so and devoid of any real Szechwan spiciness. The Mongolian beef was just think strips of slicked beef in a brown sauce having no semblance to the authentic dish. However, the fried rice serving was quite large, really good and full full of shrimp. The best part of the dinner was the very sweet, friendly and charming caucasian waitress with the most beautiful skin! Unfortunately, we both like Pei Wei much better and probably won't be back to see her. :-(

We usually come here when we want fresh Chinese food. Our servers are usually Jessica or Kevin. There is a new server Eric, all three are nice. Every time we come here it's a guarantee that we always order the Peking duck with the steam buns, chinese broccoli, and salt & pepper squid. We would also order the special fish of the day in black bean sauce when we come with a big group. Best way to eat all of this is 'family style' with your friends and family. Although the duck is the best that can be found in Jax, it wasn't as fresh as I'd hope since the skin wasn't crispy on this recent visit this past Monday. On the plus side regarding the duck, Kevin is always thoughtful to ask if we want the additional duck that is accompanied with our dish. Not many are aware to ask for this, it makes for great leftovers whenever you can't finish it all. The chinese broccoli is always consistently good. Gotta love that ginger-garlic flavor they add to this dish, subtle yet flavorful. The salt and pepper squid is my favorite, I have to eat this with steam rice or else the salt might be a bit much. The fish in my opinion is the star attraction. The entire fish, from head to tail is fried to a perfect crispy exterior all served with black bean sauce, bell peppers, and onions. Surprisingly the fish is still able to retain its crispy exterior. The fish is not overcooked or dry. However, I was disappointed that they ran out of beef chow fun. One of my recent favorites. I love introducing this dish to my loved ones. It's loaded with slices of beef, flat wide rice noodles, bean sprouts, and green onions. Definitely next time! Also, they seem to always 'run out' of boba but I was hinted that the boss just doesn't have time to make it on a daily basis ;(. Gotta try the jellyfish dish next time as well! Another thing to keep in mind, they can make certain authentic dishes for you that isn't on the menu. Just call before hand to check for availability.

My wife and I came here while running errands. The outside looks pretty uninviting, but once you get inside, it's very clean and well decorated. The food was excellent, the cuts of meat were lean and well cooked, and the sauces were flavorful.

Excellent food, excellent service with a nice, quiet atmosphere. The menu had a lot of dishes that you don't find often-not your typical Asian restaurant. I would definitely recommend this place. We plan to go back often!

Having lived in Asia and being Asian ourselves, we searched for the best restaurants in town-- this is the best authentic Chinese place in Jax. Plus, the servers are always super friendly and over the top helpful, frequently coming by to ask how our meals are going... Highly recommend!!

My wife had the chicken curry which was a Thai style curry with good flavor but no heat. I ordered an off menu steamed flounder with mixed veg dish that was absolutely delicious. Servers were helpful and willing to explain various menu items. We've driven past it for years -- it;s a shame we didn't stop in long ago.

To be perfectly honest, I wouldn't know authentic Chinese food if it bit me on the ass because #1: I'm not Chinese and #2: the closest I've been to China was Japan and we all know those two countries don't hold hands and sing "Kumbaya." What I do know is that Peony serves Chinese food that you would not find at the corner Hot Wok and Panda Express. This is not a General Tso's chicken kind of place. This is a jellyfish salad, fish maw soup, and beef tripe hotpot kind of a place. The kind of restaurant where, if you have to ask what it is, you're probably not ready to eat it. This is where elaborate wedding banquets take place, where cold cuts are folded into phoenixes and peacocks and where the tables have lazy susans in the middle so that you can spin them around and take the best quality crab before anyone else. The kind of place where you'll have this conversation with your unadventurous other half - GF: "I want some authentic Chinese food. See if you can find one on Yelp." Me: "Well, there's Peony Asian Bistro. They've got some good reviews, but they're pretty hardcore with their menu. Lots of offal and stuff I've never heard of before." GF: "I want some authentic Chinese food for white people." Me: "If you wanted to go to P.F. Chang's you should've just said so." Not to say that you've got to have an iron clad stomach and constitution to eat at Peony. We found plenty of good, "safe" food for the GF like Pork Chops in Peking Sauce (fried pork strips in a really sweet sauce), and steamed Chicken Dumplings (slightly peppery, but a little cold in the middle). I ordered the Peking Duck (which came with the most amazing, marshmallow-y dumplings) and the Chinese Broccoli with Garlic (garlicky and slightly bitter goodness). They've got the usual fried rice and various noodle dishes and boba milk tea. Next time we go, I've got to try one of the soups or hotpots since everyone around us (the majority of whom were real life Chinese people) seemed to be ordering them. The biggest problem I had with Peony is that they only had one waiter handling the 40-some diners. This made for some loooooong wait times. Granted, they probably weren't expecting a huge influx on a random Monday night, but that's what they got and their unpreparedness showed.

Didn't think good Chinese food existed in Jacksonville until we discovered Peony. We followed our outstanding waiter's recommendations (Kevin) & ordered a few things we probably wouldn't have tried: salt & pepper squid as an appetizer, Peking duck, and garlic Chinese broccoli. All were AMAZING. We'll definitely be back soon.

I have been to this restaurant multiple times but my recent trip was a disaster. Ordered Chicken corn soup and it tasted salty and burnt, Had the Pork hops peking style excellent for the small portion it came in, had the sea food pan fried noodles and yang chow fried rice and they came extra salty as well . . . maybe the regular chep was off. . . Had a few left over and asked to get my leftover boxed and they decided to put all these items (except for the soup) in one box on top off each other . . . how nasty that was. I also hope they get that sewer smell fixed.

If you lived in Mandarin any time from 1990 - 2005 you may remember Hing Lounge (a mom and pop Chinese restaurant in the Publix shopping center at Old St. Augustine and Losco) and their excellent, authentic Chinese food. I have many fond memories of that restaurant, especially the Peking duck. Since they closed, there has not been an Chinese food nearly as good in Jacksonville. After reading the favorable reviews on Yelp, the husband and I decided to try Peony Asian Bistro. I am SO glad we did. It was fantastic! The dining area is roomy and bright, the service was friendly and the menu was extensive. We had pork steamed dumplings, a whole Peking duck and Szechuan shrimp (Szechuan shrimp was not on the menu, but since Szechuan chicken was the server said it was no problem to substitute the shrimp). The dumplings were delicious - I usually don't like them because the wonton wrapper is too thick, but these were perfect. A light wrapper surrounding tasty pork. My husband was more than happy with the shrimp. But the real star of the meal was the Peking duck. A whole duck with perfectly crisp skin, Chinese biscuits, hoisin, cucumber and green onion. He didn't even eat his meal because he was too busy eating my duck! I can't wait to go back and try some of the more unique (to my American eyes) menu items - fresh conch sitr-fried with green chives, cuttlefish with seasonal vegetables, eggplant with garlic sauce in hot pot and more duck! Go now.

Good food. I've been to a lot of Chinese places and this one ranks right up there with the best. They have an extensive fish menu and it smells like fish when you walk in so that was a bit of a turn off but the food made up for it. The water spinach with garlic and eggplant with chicken was outstanding. The roast duck was good as well. The salt and pepper squid I didn't care for. If you are looking for good Chinese food in Jacksonville try this place.

Great home style Chinese place in Mandarin in Jacksonville. Food and food quality was great, I had the spicy scallops dish and it was perfect, not to salty, nice spiciness, big scallops. Sauce home made. Really nice meal. The manager host Eric made our experience wonderful, wait staff good. Well worth a try, it's become a regular for great Chinese with good variety.

This is the best Chinese restaurant in Mandarin, if not Jacksonville! They have an authentic Chinese menu and an American one so everyone can be happy. The soups are delicious and every dish we have tried has been awesome!! The prices are great and this is a regular place for dinner from now on! We are even planning a birthday delebration there since it has become a favorite!

This place is tucked in a plaza where Jax Oriental Market is. Its really convenient to go grab something to eat and then get groceries afterwards. This restaurant use to be Zhun Jiang Seafood Restaurant but it went out of business (due to legal issues?) and the new owners have fixed the place where the old ones left off. It's an open dinning area with a function room that could be used for private parties. There really isn't much decor like you would see from a traditional chinese restaurant but it is clean and modern. Pretty much all the dishes we ordered are authentic chinese. Drunken chicken, sauteed watercrest, eggplant hotpot, and fried bean curd with shrimp paste. This has pretty much filled the gap where other chinese restaurants have closed up shop. This is our new hang out for chinese food.

Super thrilled to find an authentic chinese restaurant that serves Beef Chow Fun and Pan Fried Noodles. Like another reviewer here, I too am Chinese with parents who are both chefs and growing up in NYC, we always had awesome Beef Chow Fun. It's not easy to find outside of NY and the ones that have it are fine but missing that "wok fire' taste we called it. Peony is really good for FL. Surprisingly one of the guys is from Flushing NY, same place I grew up in and so he knew what good chinese food is supposed to taste like. Very happy to have found this place near the asian grocery, this is the kind of stuff we are used to and it does it justice.

For those that this is too adventurous of a place for, you gotta be kidding me. As a non-Chinese person who grew up in the suburbs of Chicago this kind of "authentic" Chinese was de rigeur. Don't get me wrong. This is not of the same caliber as a place in Cambridge, MA or San Fran, but for a city like Jacksonville, it's as good as you're going to get. If you want orange chicken and fried rice, why would you even bother to come here? If you want decent Chinese food at prices just slightly above take-out, this is it.

If you want authentic Chinese food, this is the place! If you want indifferent service from servers with little sympathy for those new to Chinese cuisine this is the place! The waitress also tried to tell my wife what she wouldn't like to order, even though she knew exactly what she wanted. Next she can't describe my dish, and seemed to be getting frustrated with these novices. Meanwhile they provided a family-type ambience as the owners and friends broke the silence with boisterous mandarin. We had to raise our volume to hear each other, and there was only 1 other table with guests. I informed the waitress I did not like the order after trying only a few mouthfuls, and she refused to take it off the bill. She informed there was nothing wrong with it. Well that confirmed their total lack of customer service. We're never going back and I'm sure they are glad.

I'm chinese and this place is the best chinese restaurant that I've found in the area. I am not from Jacksonville so I usually have to drive 2 hours to eat here. The specials on the board are a good choice anytime. I love the water spinich with garlic here and the peking duck.

We used to live in Atlanta where you can find a number of really good Chinese restaurants, So, we really missed good Chinese food when we moved to Jacksonville. We were so happy to find Peony Asian Bistro. This is the best Cantonese Chinese restauarant we have found in this area. We make a point to eat there or take out at least once a week. The roast duck is really good and my family loves the fish and tofu hot pot. The staff is VERY friendly and they always make us feel at home. We thought we would have to settle for the bad take-out Chinese that you find in every shopping center, but we were truly overjoyed to find this place.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly.
