I've been visiting Pagoda since I moved to Jax about 7 years ago. I visited one late night with a colleague when I worked in the area and found it kind of cool to have a sit down Chinese meal that didn't come from a strip mall with weird dark meat (sorry, not a dark meat fan!). From my understanding this place has been around since the 60s or 70s and I see why. The Polynesian and Chinese food kick started and hung around. I am so sad when I see this place only has a few cars in the lot but know my tummy will be happy. Go for the delicious hot and sour soup with crunchy wonton strips. Have a look at the adorable vintage menu. Have either the honey chicken, Mongolian chicken or any combo quite frankly. Get egg rolls. Yum! There's a sweet lady who will wait on you,and is happy to oblige if you have a special request. Realize they're pretty slammed if they get busy because I have only seen one or two servers ..ever..the only con I can think of is they don't have a soda fountain machine. Other than that, get up and go visit a piece of history right on Baymeadows.

Great food! Atmosphere isn't the best and its almost always empty but the food is really awesome. I've been going here since they had a location in Jacksonville Beach it's a classic Chinese spot.

Writing this review for my wife & daughter, since I went to Wendy's next door. They wanted something different, so chinese it is. They order the shrimp with brown rice and the sweet/sour chicken. Said it was very good and the waitress was super friendly/attentive. So they rated it as 5 stars...now I wish I went there instead of Wendy's (see my previous review).

Let's get this out of the way - the food is decent. Not outstanding, but decent. The prices are good too. It's just that everything else isn't good. Upon entering, I noticed a musty odor. Air fresheners, better cleaning, something must be able to be done to make the place smell less like a dusty closet. The service is terribly, awfully, inexcusably slow. As I write this I am one of four tables seated during lunchtime - and I've only been revisited at the table when I sought out and flagged down the wait staff myself. I was left waiting to order to obtain another drink, and now for the check. I may die here. I'm not a native of Jacksonville, but there has got to be a better place for Chinese food - or any food at all. I should have went to the Wendy's next door - and really, what worse review can you give a restaurant? So many people have commented that this place looked like it was out of business. It is, it just hasn't closed its doors yet.

I have passed this place numerous times and wondered if it was actually any good. From the outside, it looks dead. In fact, sometimes, I assumed it was closed for business because there usually isn't that many cars in the parking lot. But a friend suggested we go and I am very happy I did. I grew up on Chinese food so I consider myself to have high Chinese food standards. Well, I can happily report that this place knocked it out of the park. The food is fresh and tasty. Not a huge array of options on the menu but the classics everyone knows and loves. The one thing that impressed me the most was the chicken. Both my friend and I got chicken dishes and we were shocked to discover that it was all WHITE meat. Other places usually use dark meat or less choices cuts of meat but every bite I had was white meat. It still bothered me that no one was in there while we were there but we did notice there was a lot of to-go orders and pick ups so maybe that is their main source of revenue, but not my problem as long as they stay in business! They must be doing something right - we asked and they have been open for over 30 years!

This place is amazing and yes it seems dead but the food is great. They're the kinda place that you could bring your family to for a nice and peacefully meal together.

I dislike writing negative reviews, but the takeout I ordered was absolutely inedible! The shrimp broccoli was coated in a thick brown sauce that my boyfriend and I both could not stomach. Will definitely not be returning here ever, ever again.

Went here because I have had a lot of success with other restaurants that had good reviews... I got the Mongolian beef and my mom got the Kung pao chicken. We were not impressed with the food and the atmosphere seemed dirty. Maybe would be better for take-out but I do not recommend dining in.

I don't know how Pagoda stays in business. Maybe there is a huge lunch crowd and/or take out orders, but every time we go there or pass by there, I hardly see any cars in the parking lot. I remember when I first moved to Jacksonville back in the 90s, the first time I tried Pagoda, I was thinking, wow this restaurant is a bit... old and outdated. Amazingly, walking in last night, now in 2009, not much has changed. My husband (his first time trying Pagoda), whispered to me "smells like wakling into an antique shop". I agreed. We stopped in for a take out because I was craving their wings and beef fried rice, the two dishes I always ordered... eh...back in the 90s. Looking at their menu, another surprise, I don't think their price (or the menu) changed much at all, if even any changes. So we quickly ordered the wings and beef fried rice, and headed home. The whole time there, the restaurant was dead quiet. The food didn't change one bit. The wings are nicely fried without any sauce. Some may find it a bit bland, but I love it the way it is. The fried rice... how to describe it.. you ever say something like "it's so bad, it's good?" That's how I describe their fried rice. No frill, just beef with some bean sprouts and over-dosed with soy sauce (making the rice very dark in color)... simple, but to me, delicious to fulfill a specific restaurant style fried rice. I don't think I'll come here often, since Publix also has great non-breaded wings that I love (if you try their wings, always ask them to make a fresh batch for you instead of just grabbing those dried-under-the-heat-lamp ones), and it's not often that I would crave restaurant fried rice. I've tried other dishes here before, remembering nothing special (hence I ended up always ordering wings and fried rice). I wouldn't dine in unless they update the dining area though. 1 star for the wings, 1 star for the fried rice, 1 star for the price!

Food is good for the price. Always empty can't see how they stay open. Always get takeout and food is fresh. Worth the money

Pagado is celebrating their 35th anniversary of being in business and serving awesome Chinese food! Pagoda has to be some of the best Chinese delivery I have had in a long time. The food smells, taste, and looks fresh, not heat lamped to hell and back. I ordered my favorite General Tso's Chicken extra spicy. The dish was great with a good balance of sauce to chicken, and the rice just right. I look forward to trying some more great options from Pagoda.

Yummy Chinese Food!! Dishes here are so beyond what most people perceive to be Chinese Food. Its not your steam-tabled, bright red, intensely cloying mass of MSG riddled food! Its actually really fresh meats and veggies stir fried to a delicious perfection. I have to say that its a great place for take out, delivery, or a nice quiet dinner. Its not jam packed with folks who are annoyingly tipping the noise scales and serves tasty Chinese food cooked to order. Even in San Francisco I still haven't found anything quite as good. Big fan of the Moo Goo Gai Pan (In plain speak...Chicken with Mushrooms and Mixed Veggies), Shrimp Fried Rice, Chicken Wings (trust...these are AMAZING), Shrimp with Lobster Sauce, Pork Lo Mein, and the vegetarian Buddah's delight just to name a few. Man...my mouth is watering at the mere thought.

Had a carry out order, got Mongolian Beef with lo mein & egg drop soup. Like posted before, the veggies in the Mongolian beef were very fresh, onions and snow peas, beef was very tender and had a good flavor. I would likely skip the lo mein next time, looks like fettuccine noodles with soy based sauce, not much else, a co workers veggie lo mein was better looking. Egg drop soup was good too, thick and salty, can't see how you could go wrong in making it. I don't know how they stay in business though, was there ~7pm on a Saturday and the place was dead, nice looking dining room though, wouldn't mind going back to eat in there. They even had a bar taht was stocked!

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
