OK so I will try and make it though this review without falling asleep after having had an amazingly yummy breakfast from Metro Diner. I found Metro Diner on Yelp after traveling to Jacksonville for a wedding. It was a short trip which meant limited eating opportunities so I needed the best of the best and Yelp did not disappoint (my other stop was 4 Rivers Smokehouse). Anyways, once I saw that first pic of the chicken and waffles with the strawberry I was pretty much sold...it looked amazing! The high rating solidified it for me. We arrived on a Saturday morning a little before 930am and waited about half an hour before being seated. It was nice size crowd but it was beautiful outside so we didn't mind the wait. It was really nice that the restaurant had free coffee available outside on the porch for waiting patrons. When our table became available we went inside and was seated near the kitchen/expo/counter area. Our server was Barbi and she was very pleasant and courteous. She took our order of chicken and waffles and even happily changed it when I opted to get the pound cake French toast (that's right... POUND CAKE FRENCH TOAST) with a side of bacon. We had decided to share since I didn't know when I would get another opportunity to have pound cake French toast and since the portion sizes looked pretty hefty. Our food came out pretty quickly. I loved my seat next to the expo window as I got to gaze at all the yumminess that came out. Barbi prepped us on the proper chicken and waffles etiquette showing us how to mix our syrup and hot sauce. Sounds gross I know, and I don't even eat hot sauce. But trust me, it works. Ok so our food came out in all its glory and the waffle was topped with a house made strawberry butter. Let me tell you...that butter was a mix between ice cream and heaven! Soooo good! I have no complaints about the food. The waffle was cooked perfectly: golden brown, crisp, and light and airy. The chicken...mmm juicy and well seasoned. It wasn't bland like many other places and went perfect with my syrup concoction and waffle. The pound cake French toast was good as well but it just didn't stand a chance in comparison to the chicken and waffle. Again, I have no food complaints besides I wish I had tried more items. We also had a brief visit from the manager and he seemed genuinely interested in making sure we had everything we needed and that we were enjoying our visit. Overall service was excellent which is huge for me. Barbi was awesome and I could see that her team worked well together even when swamped. Oh, as a last note, Metro Diner shares parking with a plaza so there is ample parking. It also sits right at a bridge so I hear there are some seats that have great scenic views. IF YOU'RE IN JAX THIS IS A MUST GO!

Not what I expected, but not horrible. I had the apple yo hala French toast. I absolutely love challah bread which it was made out of. The bread was slightly soggy, but the apple topping was ok. Also at my table was the Charleston shrimp and grits. It was great (coming from a Charleston native) the grit cake was fried, and the shrimp and sauce had a lot of flavor and it was creamy. There were also bacon crumbles on it! Try it for a quick breakfast!

One of my favorite places to go no matter what time of day - from Apple Yo Hala or the 12 inch pancake to pot roast, meatloaf & turkey, I have never been let down! The staff is always so pleasant and it's great when management comes around just to chat! The meals & prices can't be beat & I can't wait for my location to start with dinner this month so I can visit even more!

Had a really good time with the family here. The wait time was short but I did go very early for a Tuesday morning. I got the bissel breakfast and the pancake were very tasty, fluffy and delicious. My husbands breakfast sandwich was huge! But the only sad thing was that the part that was taken home actually had eggshells in it :-( not very tasty after that. I had a special request which was executed beautifully. I asked for the bacon, egg and cheese biscuit sandwich to be deconstructed for my 3 year old and it was done exactly as imagined and my daughter ate it all up except for the biscuit but that's what I figured she would do, hence the special request. The biscuit was amazing! Nice and fluffy and soft. The service was good and we were served pretty quick even with the restaurant being busy. I look forward to coming in again :-)

Food and service was excellent. Had a Monty Cristo sandwich that was served deep fried. What a treet !!!!!

I LOVED the chicken and waffles! You mix Louisiana Hot Sauce in with the syrup and it is delicious combination on both the waffles and the chicken! They give me two full chicken breast and two wings and a huge waffle cut into fours. It was definitely enough to share and take home left overs! My mom had the "mom's omelette". There was quite a bit of Swiss cheese in the omelet. It took away three flavor of the asparagus and mushrooms. Service was great and as I watched other customers get their food, it was clear that the Metro diner is not afraid to serve huge portions. I will definitely be back to share this experience with my friends and family to have not been here.

Very popular breakfast spot. . On weekends expect a wait. Chicken and waffles are a must try. I love this place! The only thing I wasn't too pleased with was on one of their eggs Benedict, I expected fresh spinach, tasted n looked like it was frozen. I've been here numerous times and tried many of their dishes and not liking one isn't bad!

I had the San Francisco Eggs Benedict with the corn beef hash that was smoked in the back on a smoker they said. That was the best corn beef hash I tasted in a long time. I see that they are going to open a Metro Diner on Kingsley Ave That's a great thing.

It's about time I wrote a review for Metro Diner. What they all tell you is true, it is always busy and there is always a wait. It is amazingly good food and A-okay service. We have gone there ourselves many times, taken family there, and even had my birthday breakfast outside looking at the water. I have pleasant memories here. In the past month though, all I eat there is a waffle or pancake with strawberry butter. That strawberry butter is crack. It's good crack. It tastes like ice cream said my nieces when I introduced them to it. So yeah, get some of that buttah in yo life!

After reading reviews of Metro diner, we knew there would be a challenge between them and First Watch up the street. And the winner of this challenge turns out to be ME! Metro puts twists on standard breakfast fare that is good ole country food done a unique way. I had fried chicken Benedict. A crazy makeup that worked really well. The poached eggs were perfect, the chicken crispy and the coffee was good. You couldn't ask for a better old fashion new southern breakfast than this. They are very proud of their food (given the prices) but they give you more than you can eat. So no major complaints there This place has an old fashion diner feel which is pretty cool. It is usually crowded but the wait times didn't seem to bad. Overall a great place if you want some serious food.

I couldn't decide what to order, everything in the menu sounded great. When I finally got my food, it was awesome! I couldn't eat it all, I got so much food. Every time we go there we have to wait and it's a little loud but it's so worth it!

Metro diner makes me smile. Not only do I love the food, but I have lovely memories of my Nana and Metro diner. She LOVED their food (we ordered take out) and we enjoyed it together. My mom and I think of her when I enjoy Metro Diner or pass by. My favorite foods are the Sweet Potato Pancakes which make my mouth water at the mere thought. The omelettes are filled with your selection of the best fillings for omelettes (mouthwatering), Yo Holla is something that everyone should try...the inner fat kid in everyone will clap with glee. (Just work out tomorrow). The waffles are delish with fruit on top or my favorite- maple syrup. I am thrilled that they now have a St. Augustine location! Now everyone can experience the deliciousness of Metro Diner! They by far have the best breakfast in town!

We've been going to the Metro Diner since there was only the original one in San Marco. All of the hype is true! Great, homemade food and each location is consistent with the original. Must try!

Had scrabbled eggs, hash browns, bacon and toast. Excellent as usual! Very busy restaurant and the staff are very friendly. It's my favorites place to go for breakfast.

  • Jess K.

Croissant french toast with bananas- oh my goodness! So delicious. Great server, patient and laid back but still upbeat and seemed happy to be working. Enjoyed sitting out on the shaded patio across from the water. It was my first trip in but certainly not my last!

It was pretty good. I've been to this Metro Diner many times and have generally gotten something different every time. Everything I've gotten have been pretty good so far. I recommend the chicken and waffles, the bissel breakfast, the pastrami or the pittsburgh sandwich, or the san francisco benedict. The restaurant is moderately sized but is seemingly always busy, so plan for a 30 minute wait at least. The wait staff is friendly and attentive, so that's a plus. Not much to say that hasn't already been said honestly.

Had the chicken salad over a tomato and the tomato was nasty and grainy. would've been good if they served the tomatoes that are fresh and in season now

One of my favorites, if not my favorite, breakfast joint. The wife and I have been to this Metro Diner location many many times over the past several years. My favorite item to order is actually their corn beef hash with poached eggs, with extra side of hash. Love it. When it's only the two of us, we actually try to snatch two 'bar' seats. It's like a meal and show when watching the very highly efficient kitchen staff doing their magic. The service is always fast and friendly. The wait can be a while though, if you come at popular weekend breakfast time. But it's worth the wait for sure.

I absolutely love Metro Diner! I'm so excited about this location because it is very close to my house so it's more convenient for me to come in as often as I can. I have never had a bad meal here. The service is always friendly and the atmosphere of this restaurant is fun. I love coming here for breakfast. I will forever be a Metro Diner customer!

If you plan to have the chicken and waffles, please bring a pillow and a blanket because that's what you will need after that meal as it is served with 4 pieces(a half of chicken) of chicken, a belgian waffle with strawberry butter and I had the nerve to add strawberries and whipped cream.......but it was soooo good! The waitress will come by and mix maple syrup and hot sauce to dip your chicken in which I had to raise an eyebrow to because that was a first for me but once you try it, you will love it. I'm certainly glad this place is in Florida and not North Carolina........

The worst metro diner in Jacksonville. Had to wait a ridiculous amount of time. It was expected to wait but the staff skipped over my group multiple times. Checked with hostess and they advised us we were next for a party of 4. Two other groups of parties of 4 got called! It felt like the episode of Seinfeld. I'll go to this one as a last resort.

I really like the food and service. I ordered a small salad and ordered the turkey burger. The Pittsburgh sandwich might send me to the emergency room. But what a way to go!'nn

Didn't realize that Triple D (Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives) had been in our illustrious city for this diner until after we ate there, and I understand why. Chicken and waffles are the bomb, and the sandwiches look amazing! I say "look" and not "are," or "taste" because no one in our group would let me try them, because they liked them so much. On our second visit, I got the standard diner fare: eggs, bacon, pancakes, et cetera. Equally mind-blowing. I am glad there is not one closer, because I would have to make a hard choice between Metro and my usual (Deerwood)! I will tell you to get here early or you will wait *forever* to get a table--it'll be worth it, don't get me wrong, but who wants delayed gratification!?

Mr. Yelp had a dentist appointment down on San Jose, and we were thinking about stopping at a "usual" spot for lunch afterwards... until I remembered The Metro Diner was just down the road. So, after I ran a few errands and picked him up, I said, "Instead of "our usual", how about some chicken and waffles?" SOLD, on the spot. I already knew what we were both going to order... Adam, the chicken and waffles of course (so I could have some) and I always have to try corned beef hash if it's on the menu. We walked in about 1:30, so the crowd had scattered, we sat down and helped right away. It did not take long for the deliciousness to hit our table either! Seemed like less than 10 minutes...and we were both starving, so it may have been about 5, hehe. The corned beef hash had some nice, big chunks of corned beef, some bits were a little crispy (the way I like it), but it was kind of dry and disappointing overall. I put my poached eggs on top (a little overcooked, but not bad) and some hot sauce on it.. then even mixed my side of sausage gravy in my bites... and it was still only OK. (PS. Sausage gravy was pretty good... but I usually like it with a little more kick.) So why the 4 stars, you might ask? HOLY S***, the chicken and waffles! That truly was a 5 star experience. Three enormous pieces of fried chicken, that almost rival Beach Road, with fantastic almost perfect crispy skin and breading, juicy and tender on the inside, and yes, even the maple syrup and Louisiana hot sauce dipping mix, AMAZING. And OMG the waffle.... it was so light it felt like I was biting into a f-ing cloud! And the strawberry butter.... WTH! Like others have said, it tastes like ice cream, with bits of the strawberry in there... it was absolute heaven. So, my bad for ordering a dish Metro isn't exactly "known for." At least I know. Next time, I am ordering the chicken and waffles for myself.... and Mr. Yelp can order one of the French toasts... so I can of course have some of that too. Cause this is totally happening again, soon.

Loved the lunch! LOVED it! The place is packed and the inside smells like a diner should smell like! The aroma of something tasty and exquisite to eat! YES! Killer sandwiches! I went with Italian beef! Some what of a Chicago favorite but at the diner it's beefed up on steroids and loaded with peppers amongst other veggies and add some spicy sausage to it! Yum! I'll be back! Because it's just that good! If you don't like killer sandwiches and dishes, well don't go! Simple

3.5 Stars. I ordered the Vortec Burger. It was huge, the burger patty was stacked between 2 grilled cheese sandwiches with even more goodies in between that. It was tasty, greasy, and felt disgusting after I finished (should've bagged the other half of the burger to go) My friend ordered the Fried Chicken and Waffles and it looked delicious. Decent food, huge portions, I'd be a regular if I lived here.

This place is awesome and I can't believe this place is a chain. We stopped here on our way to Orlando to do the Disney experience. We came on a Monday and we were lucky enough to get a table quickly. The staff are friendly and helpfull. This place is a little noisy but in a good way. Great place to meet for breakfast, brunch, dinner or anytime you want to get together with a friend or family. I had the Huevos Rancheros and pancakes, my son had steak benedict and waffles, and my wife had steak and eggs. It was all AWESOME. We could not believe how delicious the food were. The items on their menu is vast, but I would have tried it all if I live here. We will definitely be back if we are back in this area again.

A true Southern diner with a small town, locals only feel. Portions are BIG, one entree is enough for two. The food is deep fried and buttered up. Plan to take a nap after eating. Dining area is closely seated and the inside air gets a little smokey from the grill. A good experience but no rush to go back.

Now we have been going to Metro Diner for many years now. Even before Mr. DDD stopped in and made this place a national monument in town. This place is good don't get me wrong. The hype is just bigger then their meals are good. We used to go to Sunday breakfast at the san marco location for months till my wallet got sick. They are really proud of their food but, if you can get people to pay those prices more power to you. It like Starbucks they have this country trained that you need to pay 10.00 for a cup of coffee for it to be good. The cheap stuff is just as good believe me. Now I have started a new job near this location and I'm out and about trying new places to eat an Metro was the short straw today. I got seat as soon as I picked my table. I even ordered a Reuben sandwich and some rings. The rings were good but over done for me. They were also sitting there till they dried out. I like salt on my rings and flies but if you wait to long you end up with a bunch of salt on your plate and not on your fries. The sandwich was good, well kind of. The corned beef was out of a package. You know shredded corned beef that you buy in a can. I now know who uses shredded corned beef in their Rueben sandwich. It's not something that I like or will ever order again. Maybe I'll try something else it they get that short straw again.

My eyes are bigger than my stomach! They have croissant French toast. Pound cake French toast. Like. What I'M IN LOVE! I came in on my birthday for brunch because I absolutely love breakfast food and my boyfriend recommended this place. My party came in at around noon and even though it was cold and rainy, this place was packed and after eating, I can see why. I ended up ordering the croissant French toast breakfast and got bacon, cheese grits, biscuits and gravy, eggs, and hash browns. (Look, I told you my eyes were bigger than my stomach, LOL) Jeez, everything was amazeballs. ESPECIALLY the croissant French toast. If you thought croissant's couldn't get any better, imagine a croissant breaded, dipped in some cinnamon, toasted to perfection with butter and magic sprinkled on top. My mouth is watering right now lol I'll definitely go back. The prices were reasonable; the food is fantastic; and it's a very comfortable environment with friendly staff.

I would say this is one of the most enjoyable places to eat in Jacksonville the one thing you always have to wait in line to get in it's about 15 to 20 minute wait but the food and the quality is really good highly recommend it you can say is a little bit expensive but the portion sizes makeup for the past I recommend a breakfast burrito there 12 inch pan cake is huge and I also recommend the biscuit and gravy n Philadelphia sandwich so come in and try it for yourself you will not be disappointed and the people who work there are super cool ...

The best diner in Jax and a must-try for any out-of-towners. Highlights include fried chicken & waffles, huevos rancheros, challah french toast, and the seasonal pumpkin soufflé pancakes.

Woke up on a sunday, and my husband wanted to go out for breakfast. So we used yelp and found the metro diner. We arrived around 840am and waited about 10 minutes outside sitting by a heater. Our waitress was super nice and attentative. I had the fruity waffles. DELICIOUS. I wish my plate was endless. My husband had the huevos Rancheros and they were really good. Very different looking than what we are used to in southern CA, but very tasty. Can't wait to try the other locations (we are in mandarin)

I've been here twice and my experience both times was great! I love their fruity waffle and cinnamon raisin pecan french toast =) The portions more than one can handle for a great price. Food is nomnomlicious. I like this place =)

  • Brian F.

This is by far one of my favorite all time places. This is one place I do miss after moving away from Jax. I highly recommend this place to anyone and there isn't a bad thing on the menu. They serve both breakfast and lunch and have now opened a few more locations in the city. Be prepared to wait though as this place is extremely popular. Some of my recommendations are: Egg Benedicts, Big Fish Sammich, Yo Holla, Chicken and Waffles (some of the best and biggest portion around), Corned Beef Hash and Eggs, and perhaps my favorite dish is the Shrimp and Grits (you won't find better)! I could go on and on about this place all day, the staff is always wonderful too!

  • Marcy P.

This place is completely amazeballs! I've been to 2 of their locations, multiple times and the food is so good it will make you want to cry tears of joy. I always order something new, which I typically don't do when eating out, with each visit so I can slowly eat my way through the entire menu and I have never been disappointed! No matter the day of week or time of day, there going to be a pretty long wait, but trust me...it's worth every second. They always have free coffee and/or lemonade to sip on while you wait for that super happy moment when you hear your name called! On top of the great food, the service is stellar! The wait staff is very friendly, helpful and knowledgable on the items offered. They do their best to get your food out to you quickly, which is always piping hot- straight from the kitchen. If you are alone or with 1 other, do yourself a favor and wait for a spot at the counter. You'll get to see all the action and what it takes to fulfill all the food orders. It's like a well-oiled machine back there and it runs like clockwork! All and all a wonderful experience at The Metro Diner! They never disappoint!

  • Annemarie M.

It's ok. Little pricey. Good variety though. Not my first go to place for lunch or breakfast. Just doesn't wow me I think it's very noisy in there so not really a place that you could hold business lunch or breakfast They are always busy so there is something there that brings the crowds back

    (3)
  • Gunnar K.

Usually go to this location mid-week with spouse for lunch. Bacon Mushroom Swiss burger and fries is great. Spouse usually gets the Veggie Burger and fries. They make the veggie burger in house. It has nice flavor and is well portioned. Staff seems to always be in "go" mode. Seats close to kitchen area can be distraction because staff tries to move food quickly. There is usual someone stationed getting the food out and much talk is going on. If you look at it more as a show rather than a calm seat choice you will be okay. Regardless of where you sit the place is noisy- it is a diner after all. Food is great - wonderful portions. We keep going back.

I was introduced to Metro Diner after I saw it on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dive's a few years ago. Since then I have never had a poor dining experience. All of the staff are friendly and service is usually pretty quick (even if the wait can get SUPER long on busy days/times). My favorite by far is the chicken and waffles! The syrup with hot sauce mixed in... um yes please! I also really like the Yo Halla. So sweet and delicious! Definitely not very much diet-friendly foods though. Oh well who cares when the food is that good?

    (5)
  • Steve R.

Food is amazing and a great twist on the original dish. There is always a wait on the weekends but it's worth it. Every time I go there I get something different and it's always good. Get the specials if you have been there a lot, they are usually really good and seasonal.

Short: A local breakfast diner popularized by The Food Network Long: Massive portions overload your stomach with a poorly seasoned chicken and waffle famous combo that didn't quite deliver. Menu remainder was predicable upgraded Denny's style. Prices are not low and ambiance is packed to the gills. Good For: Split a chicken and waffle ice cream combo with 2-3 people Bad For: LDL Cholestoral

Went in for breakfast this past week, as I read reviews on Yelp. I had also noticed that a popular food TV show had made a visit here, as there are photos on the wall of the celebrity and the owner. I ordered eggs Benedict, hash browns and coffee. The waitperson was friendly, but did not make one stop to check on my cup again.....(usually I NEVER ding a waitperson, as it is not an easy job, and I get that) It was steady business in the place, but not "in the weeds." My cup was finally filled by another employee. She also asked if I wanted cheese and peppers on my hash browns....I said "why not"- now I know why not! The peppers were not spicy, and in fact they were bland, and piled high - and from a can. I scraped them off - and ate the hash browns - still pretty good. Eggs were poached perfectly, but sadly, the Hollandaise sauce was pretty thin, and without flavor. (A breakfast staple like this, in a very popular diner should be exemplary, and today it just wasn't) So, a bit of a disappointing meal.....and I was so looking forward to a great breakfast.....that I drove quite a way to experience. By the way, regardless of the slow and sometimes inattentive service, I over-tipped the waitress, as I always overtip breakfast wait staff....and it is holiday time....just a little FYI that maybe you will adopt as your habit as well.

I'm a huge fan of "Diners, Drive ins and Dives". When I heard they had visited a diner in Jacksonville, I had to check it out for myself. Went there on a Wednesday for lunch, which was pleasantly slow. Sat outside with my dog (yes, they have outdoor seating and allow dogs at every location I believe). Obviously my husband ordered the half portion of "Yo Hala on the Square", which is amazing and huge! French toast with banana and a delicious blue berry compote, can't go wrong with that. He also got the corned beef hash, I'm not usually a fan of corned beef but this was really tasty. I had the Philly cheesesteak. The meat was thick cut and delicious, not 'steakums' like some other sandwich places. Will be going back ASAP!

Been to Metro Diner three times and had the Chicken and Waffles, Yohala, and Surf and Turf. Every first bite from either order almost brought a tear to my eye. I'd been searching for a diner like this one, with flavorful explosions in every bite. The portions give you the bang for your buck, words cannot express how awesome this place is! It's somewhere I recommend to all my friends!

I am so glad I decided to wake up super early one morning on a Saturday and run over to metro. You must be there by 8-815 if u don't want a horribly long wait and must be willing to sit at the first available spot lol. Come with an appetite bc the portions are astronomical. Take half of it home or share with a friend. I've so far been a few times, and brought my very pregnant sister and brother in law here , my dad and mom are next! I just love sharing the cities food with people new to town! Try the yo challa on the square, try the special pancakes...I've had lemon soufflé (the best by far when they have it!) and the sweet potato ones. The s.o. always get the chicken and waffles with a side of home fries. The biscuits and gravy are great. The flavored teas...heavenly like the flavored coffees. Do this . Put this place on your bucket list, but be patient!

Food poisoning!!! I know this is a local favorite and this was my second visit. But I got THE worst case of food poisoning I have ever had. I have a stomach of steel but they got me. Undercooked Canadian Omelet. I left the last quarter of my omelet because I noticed it was undercooked-no worries since I was already full. Yeah that's what I thought...five days later and a trip to the ER for severe dehydration... Learned my lesson, never again.

There's a ton of Metro Diner reviews, and this is the type of Jacksonville-restaurant that everyone loves no matter the quality of the food. So is it good? Ehhhhh. I'd say it's a solid meal, but nothing special. You'll never leave saying that this was the best _________ (fill in the blank) that you ever had. That being said, the waitress we had was very nice.

Ahhhhh, the famous Metro Diner. I read review after review on how exceptional the food was here, DDD and Guy Fieri fame, etc. Right. Since it was my first time here and the place was packed, I ordered something off the menu that was pretty hard to screw up. Maybe I was at the wrong location, I dunno, but for me this experience was less than ordinary, to say the least. Food: Biscuits and gravy, eggs, with home fries. That "Yo-Halla" creation seemed way too sweet for that time in the morning, with the frangelico and cream cheese mixture going on. I ordered a soda...tasted remarkably like diet...I hate diet. Drank it anyways, since my breakfast didn't exactly qualify as "heart healthy." Food came out in a matter of minutes, so that was cool, and the portions were HUGE. 1 breakfast, 2 plates. Now here's the kicker...took a bite of a biscuit...chewed...swallowed..and started coughing. Why? Because there was more pepper in the gravy than GRAVY. I tried to persevere, but in the end I could only eat 1 biscuit...diet soda chaser between bites *sigh*. I don't send food back because I've seen the movie "Waiting" one too many times, call me crazy...or call me maybe. Home fries...very dark in color, oddly enough....and soft. No crunch on the outside, so I wouldn't exactly qualify these as home FRIES. What was weird was...even without the crunch...there was a burnt aftertaste to them. Eggs were fine, thankfully, and the only thing i finished. Suffice to say, when i left...I left hungry *with a look of disdain.* The service wasn't the problem, it was actually pleasant and efficient (Thank you, Laura and by the way...I drink "regular" coke, but no worries). Atmosphere was indeed diner-ish, but charming so no shock there. But my food...uggh. I kept waiting for Ashton Kutcher to jump out and say I was being "Punked," because I was in such disbelief. Oh well, you win some, you lose some. Only time will tell if they get a second chance.

I've been here 3 times.. The first time I got the lox bagel and was not impressed (one lousy slice of lox for that price!?) Probably would have rated this place 2 out of 5 stars just for the good service... Second time I was brought back by relatives and I ordered the Chicken salad on a croissant with Italian wedding soup. That was 3.5 stars and very tasty. However, after reading some yelp reviews, I decided to go with the chicken and waffles on this past visit.. Omg, outstanding! Best fried chicken I have ever had and best waffle too with that amazing strawberry butter! Really delicious and makes this place worthy of 5 stars.. It's that good!!! My family really swears by the yo hala meal too, though I have yet to try it! Will be hard not to get chicken and waffles from now on!!

If you are a party of 2 people on Sunday morning, you have to wait for a half an hour or better. Even though, there are tables available. It seems they cater to big families for the big tip.

The basic Bissel comes with pancakes too with a side of cheesy grits, yummmm. Basic but good. A little wait but the meal was great. Very attentive staff. Can't wait to come back.

This was our first time visiting Metro diner, since we had recently moved to the area. Now I see what all the fuss is about! Our waitress, Mandy, was the bomb! She took very good care of us, made sure drinks were always refilled promptly, and came around often to check on us. The manager even stopped by to say hello and make sure everything was going well. We did have a slight wait of 35 minutes before hand, but it was oh so worth it. We will definitely be back I want to try more items on the menu! (this visit I had French toast and fried chicken. Oh so yummy!)

Excellent food, prices and service. Great place to take visitors from out-of-state looking for homestyle food.

The chicken & waffles are fantastic! Hot sauce and maple syrup is an added delight for the dish. My wife and I were able to enjoy brunch at Metro Diner with two of close friends. The wait was a little long which can be somewhat of a bother in the hot, Jacksonville heat, but it's also a terrific indication of how awesome the food is. Our waitress was friendly and attentive despite the crowded house, and we did not have to wait long after ordering before we were able to go-to-town on some of the best chicken & waffles I've ever tasted. I highly recommend Metro Diner!

Absolutely love metro diner! Me and a special someone use to go all the time and we would make it a weekly routine! Of course I tried something different each time I went because everything seemed amazing! I highly recommend this place! But if your going to go, go to the original restaurant!

Metro Diner was on Drive, Diners, & Dives w/Guy. When you come here you have to try one of their more unique dishes to see what everyone is raving about. :) The first time I came, I ordered basic breakfast items like the omelet and it tasted like just an average omelet. I recently went there again and tried their chicken & waffles which sounds crazy, but I used to eat at the famous Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles in L.A so I gave it a shot. The waffles are topped w/ strawberry butter & it takes like ice cream in a waffle cone. lol Really good. They make a sweet & spicy sauce for the chicken made of Louisiana hot sauce and syrup. I heard their shrimp & grits is pretty good; I've never had that, but I think I will try it next. Tip: The chicken and waffles dish is big enough for 2.

Worth the wait, we had about a 45 minute wait for the table but it was worth it. I had the meatloaf, which tasted more like Salisbury Steak, but it was good. For the price you cannot go wrong. The staff was great, esp considering how busy it was. The manager was even going around to each table to make sure everything was perfect. That is a sign of a well managed place.

I love this place!!! My favorite place to eat breakfast/brunch. The food is yummy, the place is clean and the service is friendly. The veggie omelet with spinach and crab added with open face croissant French toast topped with pecans. I'm such a foodie!!! Thanks Love!! You know my spot!!! Hmmm good.

What an incredible little restaurant! I was immediately greeted and seated. The employees were very friendly. I ordered chicken and waffles and found this to be the best place for it. I had a wonderful dining experience, and the food was delicious.

I've never been in when it wasn't super busy, just the way a diner should be. I ordered the Philadelphia sandwich, it's huge! This is the best sandwich ever, you won't be disappointed!

The breakfast is ok, but the lunch food is better! My husband is a fan on the peanut butter burger (I don't favor jalapeños, but I had a bite and it was tasty!) I liked the breakfast burger I respect any place that serves real macaroni and cheese on the kids meal and not that packaged junk. Metro's is very good! Chicken salad sandwich is also pretty good!

Relaxed and casual atmosphere with amazingly well trained staff (who's courteous, friendly, attentive without hovering, come back and let us know what we ordered is coming) combined with good food is a winning recipe. The gumbo soup was a different texture than I was expecting or used to. I didnt find any okra in it either. My favorite item has to be the fish wrap, it was moist fresh delicious and seem to be a great healthy choice so you can devour the waffle with the strawberry whipped butter with less guilt :) Love coming here during lunch time where you can order from both the breakfast menu AND the lunch menu. The selection is huge and I look forward to going back again!

I have friends ask me all the time who has the best breakfast in Jacksonville. They know I will have the answer because I take my clients out all the time. I consistently find myself telling them Metro Diner! It is one of the last, real greasy spoons with an awesome twists on its entrees. You honestly wont get a bad meal whether its breakfast or lunch. In fact, their lunch specials are so great that you'd better get there early. They do serve breakfast all day which is great and yes there is the occassional burnt toast smell but I've never been served burnt toast. Do you count calories when you come to Metro Diner? No. You just enjoy every bite. Quit asking, take a break from your diet and go and see for yourself.

This place is great. My husband and I love going out for breakfast, and we eat here often. We love it for the delicious food and the excellent service (who knew teenagers could be so polite, attentive and customer service oriented?). This review, however, isn't about every day dining. We got married in October, and we had a very nontraditional wedding. We decided to have the reception at a restaurant, and after we met with the manager at this location, Scott Stagmeier, we knew there was no better place. Scott was beyond exceptional. He, the event itself, and the entire event planning process (as it related to Metro Diner) exceeded our expectations over and over again . There was no crazy request that he did not accommodate thoroughly, efficiently, and (in a world of ridiculously inflated wedding prices) at a shockingly reasonable rate. Scott speaks quickly and he seems a little stressed, but that's because this man is getting stuff DONE. And neither of these things prevents him from listening carefully and (almost instantaneously) giving the perfect solution to relieve your stress. At our first meeting, Scott listened to our menu needs and helped us come up with the perfect menu options (half of which weren't on the regular menu). He continuously offered suggestions of things metro diner could do for us that would relieve stress without adding additional costs. For example, they ordered the linens and passed on the direct cost with no mark up and they offered their staff for decor setup according to our directions. The response to every question regarding what we could bring to the venue (our own liquor, outside cakes, speakers, etc.) was met with "of course. This is your venue for the night." He did a thousand other things, but it would take forever to list them all. The following example pretty much sums up the experience: "Scott, I want to put a sprig of rosemary on every place setting, but my florist says it will cost $2 a sprig. This is a long shot, but can you get them cheaper through culinary supply?" Response: "I can get you a bag of rosemary that will fill this entire room for $6." The event exceeded even the very high expectations Scott set for us. Everything was perfect and stress free. Even our foodie friends said that it was the best food they had ever had at a wedding. We can't thank metro diner enough for making our wedding perfect. If you're having an event, we highly recommend this location and Scott. Prepare to be impressed.

I would preface this with I am a fan of the Metro Diner in San Marco. This one in Mandarin is something else. The waiter spent more time flirting with the waitresses than with his customers. I ordered the Surf and Turf Benedict. The crab cake was an odd color and was really salty the Prime Rib was pretty much 50 percent grizzle and was left. I won't be back

Great place for groups. The staff is inviting and attentive. However, the long waits are just not worth the food. There's nothing amazing on the menu, and the quality of the food could be a lot better. However, it's not horrible and I have gone back many times because of the location and the service. Enjoy!

  • Keziah A.

During previous visits, the food was better. The chicken and waffles met the mark, but all of the food we had today was substandard. After a 20 minute wait, we got to our table, order and had to wait a full 40 minutes for our diner food. The homemade chips were home burnt, the fish was not seasoned and the general manager assured us that it was normal: all fried food is unseasoned. Then, the tomato bisque soup came out cold and clumpy. The fries that came with our food came out 10 minutes after the food and our 75 cent jalepeños came out after we asked for them 3 times. And the quote unquote "sweet tea" was not made according to Southern recipe. For all of our trouble, they only took $5 off of our bill. This place is going downhill. Stick to the downtown location. Maybe the recipes changed since Guy came.

This place is amazing, the best patty melt I have ever had, huge portions fast service, watching the kitchen work is awesome, it's like organized chaos, as a person who has worked in kitchens before I can appreciate the quiet nature that they conduct their business very professional.

Awesome Awesome breakfast food... been there numerous times for the last several week since a friend introduced us to this place. Everytime, i walked away stuffed and happy. We've tried sevral of their specials such as Italian Fritattas, Fried Chicken Benedicts, Pittsburg Sandwich to regular menu items like Fried Chicken and Waffle, Shrimp and Grits, Corn Beef Hash, Sausage Gravy and Biscuits, Breakfast Pie... I have to say, the quality and flavor have been consistenly good. They do get really busy, everytime we go, there has always been a 15-30 min wait, but it was worth the wait for me. Once seated though, the staff have always been very prompt and friendly. We have become regulars there and will continue to be.

Everything was awesome!! My husband got the chicken and waffles, amazing. I got the yo hallla on the square which was stuffed French toast with strawberry and blueberry compote on top, which was really delish! Portion size were huge and prices were fair. Great place. I definitely would recommend !!

Amazing food on our stop in Jacksonville. Chicken and waffles with special syrup they make at the table for dipping the fried chicken. Even without the dipping of the chicken in the syrup, the fried batter is homemade and amazing. Our server Sage was super knowledgeable and explained the fried batter was made from a mustard base. Super delicious. The waffles are light and crispy and delicious too. There's no doubt that we will be back if we are in the area again.

Great place for breakfast as most other reviewers have mentioned. Anything you order is good. I mean any item period. The good: Food - High quality Portion Size (HUGE) Consistant Service Location is great right by the water Some Unique items on the menu The Bad: Very popular means a wait and the enterance gets plugged up during the rush (which is always) Noisy, they've tried to install dampeners but it's still a bit crazy.

I fux wit Metro Diner. I've been to the one on San Jose, the one at the Beach, and the one that is on hendricks. Of course, it's all about the Chicken and Waffles with Strawberry Butter. The Strawberry butter is like a butter ice cream its the cherry on top! The butter is what sets it off for me. At Moxie, I think it's the Maple Foam and the Buttermilk brined oh so juicy chicken. At Blue Bamboo, it's the Peach Compote. The only thing that i wish i could have at Metro Diner is Chicken and Waffles but all wings!! Cuuuuuuummmonnn Metro Diner, I even asked for it and they said no =(...I will pay extra! At Roscoe's in California it's called the Obama special lol 3 chicken wangs and a waffle. The portion is pretty large for Metro's C&W, but did you know you can get half orders? Yes you can! What i usually so is get a half order of C&W and a half order the patented Yo hala on the square (A thick slice of Challah bread stuffed with bananas that have been sautéed in Frangelica and blended with cream cheese, Then prepared like French toast and topped with a delicious blueberry strawberry compote)!!. The Yo Hala is a sinful lil treat, that is why u only need a half order! Half C&W and Half Yo Hala...game over...food coma. A recent discovery at Metro is the Corned Beef Hash. I really can't explain it but it just makes you feel good inside. My friend Mikey swears by it and he made me a believer! I have tried the meatloaf before but im not a fan. I made a custom omlette once and it was as good it gets.

This is a better experience than visiting the original Metro Diner in San Marco. I buy breakfast infrequently and always want the same thing when I do: eggs, bacon and blueberry pancakes. Frankly, I think everything here is fairly ordinary, but it is better than the other breakfast joints in town like Village Bread Cafe or First Watch. It is similar in quality to Original Pancake House. One must take into account realistic expectations for Jacksonville - Metro Diner really should be 3.5 stars for food since it is far below the superb quality (for example) of Zumbro Cafe in Minneapolis or of The Broken Egg in Birmingham. But this is Jacksonville, and in Jacksonville I will enjoy here the very good blueberry pancakes, the REAL maple syrup available at an upcharge, decent bacon, and superbly seasoned, crisp home fries. The black coffee could be better. I haven't yet found a better breakfast in Jax that is available every day of the week (there probably are better weekend brunches at various high-end places in Jax)...

Love Metro but time for a staff meeting on customer service. 1st bad experience. Starter came 15 seconds before main course. Food seemed like it was sitting in window for a while. Servers in the past are really friendly and attentive, this one was neither. As a general rule servers should not carry items under their armpits, It's disgusting! Witnessed this twice while there. I don't want to use a ketchup or anything else that was carried in that fashion. Get it together!

The vortex burger is wonderful! I have gotten it several times. The first time I got it my daughter, 2 years old, saw it and said "Happy Birthday!" It is so big she thought it must be a special occasion. Well I can't argue with her there.

Waiting in line is the only bad part but I eat here weekly. It really is "Where the locals eat". The Bissell Breakfast is a guaranteed hit (basic breakfast with eggs, sausage, hashbrowns, biscuit, and pancakes), chicken and waffles are yummy, huevos rancheros are huge and delicious, yo halla is big and delicious but also super sweet but available in a half portion, I could go on and on. Lunch is equally delightful. I would recommend the big fish sandwich, the French dip, or the grilled chicken tender sandwich. We always go back and guests will request coming here. It's delicious! (Call ahead and ask about the wait).

Still love this place! Been back 5-6 times since the last review. The creamed chip beef was ok, but the corned beef hash was awesome! And the Chicken and Waffles? "Off the Chain!" to quote a certain tv personality. Love it!

Just moved to Jax and this place was on the top of my list of places to try... The food was amazing. The portion sizes are unreal, I'm not use to getting that much food at one serving. Chicken and Waffles were spectacular, freshly made strawberry butter YUMMY! Didn't care to much for the maple syrup with hot sauce but otherwise my meal was beyond delicious. Can't wait to go back, I plan on trying everything on that menu.

After seeing this place on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, my family decided to try it out. This place is ridiculously popular, so expect a crazy wait time, but oh boy is it worth it. Everybody was smiling and laughing when we walked in. They led us to a clean table and we received our food in a very short period of time. For the price, you get a huge amount of food that is a 10 out of 10 taste wise. Comforting, delicious and great for leftovers. If it's your first time, make sure to order a dish with fried chicken, I promise you will have zero regrets.

This is an awesome place to eat! I am a diner girl. I come here for the Fried Chicken and Waffles! I know I am not supposed to eat it but I figure once a month its worth it and it is. It is so awesome. I even brought my son here when he visited the staff is friendly and they are very timely I can't wait till they get one of these on my side of town.

My wife and I shared the breakfast skillet and could only eat about half of it. They did not charge us extra for sharing it. We found this breakfast dish to be quite bland and ordinary. It was certainly nothing special except for the size of the portion which was HUGE. The side dish that we chose was hash browns and they were quite good. The menu said that toast was included but none was offered and none was served. Including two coffees, one large orange juice, tax and tip, the entire tab totaled $20, a poor value in my opinion. The service was good (except for the missing toast) and the facility is a big improvement on the Hendrick's Ave facility, but the noise level is not much lower. It was a cold day with outside temperature about 50 degrees when we were there and, although we were well dressed, our feet and lower legs felt cold.

Best breakfast in Jax. For really tho'. I don't play. I never give 5 stars and here it is. Me, B and Alice rolled through for a late late breakfast on a Sunday. Was 93 in the shade and 99% humidity. I had to get chicken n' waffles. Chicken was done proper...juicy, crunchy and not too greasy. Just enough salt to awaken the palate. They load the plate with a half chicken and a whole Belgian waffle. That part comes topped with strawberry butter. Then, the whole thing is presented with syrup mixed with hot sauce. I've had me some chicken n' waffles...most notably Roscoe's here in Cali...and Metro's did it up better. Alice had shrimp and grits...super smooth, creamy grits with a good number of peeled shrimp. In the middle was an island of a firm, non-sweet corn bread and bacon. Really, I might have been done up just as happy having this. B had an Eggs Benedict with avocado...I can't remember the name...It was really good as well, but not as world changing as the other two dishes. I'd go back. Service was great...they got a bunch of high school serving.

The corn beef hash very generous portion, was very good, had a bit to much pepper in it for my taste but would order it again. This place will accommodate. My husband had a half waffle, as he puts it "it was a real Belgium waffle, not made from pancake batter". He had bacon and eggs. This is not listed as a combo but were able to do it. This is our 2nd time here and will not hesitate to go again. Be prepared it can be loud inside. They do offer outside dinning. We all had coffee to drink and our cups remained full, which is a must for me. We went on a Friday morning and had about a 15 minute wait, so if you're in a rush to be seated this might not be the place for you. If you have the time give it a try. The make French toast from a croissant, which sounds oh so yummy, if I wasn't gluten free I would try it.

Wanted to really enjoy this place, but it really was average diner food. When we went the place was pretty much packed, but we were seated pretty quick. Service was a bit slow, but as busy as it was we didn't mind at all. We tried their Huevos Rancheros, Veggie omelet, corned beef hash, and pancakes. The corned beef hash came out first and must say it was pretty bland, that was really the end of that side dish. Couldn't really complain about the Huevos Rancheros, its a HUGE portion full of your Tex-Mex deliciousness. Pancakes were pretty good too. Overall, food came out quick and was a little over average, but nothing spectacular.

I came here with high expectations. This diner was referred by numerous friends. After eating breakfast here, I would say there is nothing special about this place. My wife has the crab cakes Benedict which was average. The crab cake was pretty soft and flavor could have been better. I had the American omelette with hashbrowns. Overall the food was okay. It just needed more flavor.

Same great food as the original location... but service is slacking. This location is a lot more spacious and less noisy but will probably stick with old reliable. We got there just about 9am and were out by 10:30am. There was a bit of a wait, which is to be expected on the weekend at either location.

I LOVE Metro Diner, and was beyond thrilled when this one opened about 10 minutes from my house. It's more spacious than the original, and the view of the marina outside is nice. Unlike another reviewer, I've never noticed issues with cleanliness - and almost wondered if he was talking about the old location, which simply looks a little dirtier even when clean due to its age. But let's talk about the food: there are lots of great options here, but I will admit not everything I've had has made the earth move. Faves: Fried chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, Bissell breakfast, and meatloaf (better than mom's, I won't lie!) Also love their hashbrowns - greasy, yes, but tasty, and their biscuits are the best I've found in town. Huevos rancheros, Yo Hala, and Pittsburgh Steak Salad are also solid picks. Not so faves include the patty melt, any of their benedicts (though my hubby loves them), and the 3-cheeser sandwich. That said, nothing has been bad - some things just didn't make me as happy. There's a pretty decent wait here most days, so either go early or late when you can...until they (hopefully) someday open for dinner, I like this place best for early breakfast or late lunch. Oh, and those needing a caffeine fix - be aware the iced tea is decaf. Makes me happy, but I'm sure others would miss it.

Oh gosh, I'm so glad Metro Diner came to Fruit Cove! Make sure to check the Specials on the Chalkboard! They don't read them to you, and I have neglected them a few times. They are always fabulous. The portions are huge! I couldn't eat an entire order of the shrimp and grits if my life depended on it. We always get one order, and a side of something else and then share.. If you tell them you are just going to share, they will charge you to split it (i hate that rule). Definitely try it out! The only downside is they are only open from 6am-2:30pm!

Awesome brunch food! Wife and I had a late breakfast there and the banana pancakes, biscuits and gravy, and hash browns (add cheddar and japs) were amazing! Our server (Marcy) was wonderful too!! She really made our experience special with her bubbly personality and was super knowledgeable about all the food. Will eat there again many times in the future!

  • Juliet J.

There's a reason the wait is always so long: this place is such fun with fabulous food! Lovely generous portions of rich, sweet combos - if that's what you like - or plenty healthy options too. I can't recommend this place enough. Go at off hours, though. Seriously!

This location didn't open until after I'd already moved out of state. On one of our visits back, my parents told us about it, and that it had been featured on Diners, Drive ins, and Dives. Apparently, it is their new favorite breakfast spot after church on Sundays -- I think they go there every week. So I had high expectations of the Metro Diner. Unfortunately, it just didn't meet them. Don't get me wrong, the food was good and the service was decent. Every time I've been, it has been extremely busy, too, but we've never had to wait that long and the food still comes out in a relatively timely manner. And while I enjoy eating here, and wouldn't mind eating here again, there wasn't that WOW factor that I thought I'd be getting. The food has always been good, but not great. Honestly, I have never had an experience there that sets it above and beyond any other good diner. So absolutely, try the Metro Diner. It's affordable, and you'll have decent food and service. Just keep your expectations a little lower and you'll be less likely to be disappointed, as I was.

Went on a Sunday and it was packed! an hour wait! Pass. Walked over to hurricane grill, which I never had before, And not looking forward to, but was surprisingly impressed. I had gone back 3 times already for this great salad. Anyway, decided to try Metro one more time but on a slower morning. So my family and i went on a Tuesday morning. Walked right in and sat down. Service was prompt. Had a good vibe in there. Upbeat diner vibe. Friendly faces. Food came out somewhat prompt. I ordered two scrambled eggs, hash browns with bacon. Bummer!! Eggs were...well, scrambled eggs. Bacon, super tough. Hash browns, super crispy, I think I cracked a filling! Don't get me wrong, I love crispy hash browns! But these were too crunchy. Not one soft bite. I sifted through the sticks and found it was just a pile of really burnt hash browns. I didn't think you can screw up such a simple meal at a diner. But this was a super fail! I also ordered the dollar pancakes for my daughters. I had a bite, and decided my husband makes better pancakes out of a premix box. I'm a bit confused as to why there was such a long wait that day, because the food was not good. I've had better at Denny's! Wonder if we just went on a really bad day. After reading some reviews, I saw that this place was featured on Guys show, I guess I will go back and try something else, something people have raved over. And I hope it will be a better experience. Bottom line, don't get your hopes up.

Best Reuben I ever had and I'm from NYC!!! Meat loaf and pot roast are excellent!!!! A little loud but food is super. To the person who said service was slacking, good food is not fast, fast food is not good. That being said, they don't hustle like at the original location. Why can't they open for dinner so there will be somewhere to get Diner food at night? Many of us spent late Friday and Saturday nights in our youth eating Diner food, help us relive those days!!!!
