Hubby and I opted to celebrate Valentine's a day early. It was my pick for dinner and I quickly requested Madrid (like several weeks ago!). I had heard they were the only place in town that served arepas. Madrid is a no frills kind of place--just the way I like it. Upon our arrival, it was fairly quiet with only a handful of patrons dining. Our server was friendly and efficient. While I did want to try the arepas (Julie-they are in the sandwich section!), I was pretty hungry. We started with the arepitas, which are 6 mini corn cakes served with butter. For my entree, I selected a old standby--Lechon Asado (roasted pork seasoned with mojo sauce), which was served with your choice of white rice or yellow rice, black bean soup and maduros (sweet plaintains). My hubby chose the Bistec De Palomilla (sirloin steak, sauteed onions, wedge of lime, lettuce and tomato)--his meal had the same sides as I had. Our food was prepared well with great flavors. For dessert, we could not resist the Tres Leches with Cafe con leche for me and a Cafe Cubano for him. In total, our meal came out to $40 and change. I definitely will return to try the arepas and maybe an empanada!

I'd like to take my friend here so she can eat herself. They have a dish here called Chuleta, which is pork marinated and grilled with a mojo sauce. They did a good job. static.px.yelp.com/bphot… The meat itself is pretty moist inside. Yummy. Only thing is, I would have preferred mine with a bit more sauce. (3 1/2 stars) For my side, I had Caldo Gallego soup instead of the beans. Warm, filling, and delicious with its chorizo sausage, white beans, and vegetables. My son had their empanada, which consisted of warm ground meat inside a lightly crispy outside. He couldn't finish it because it was so big. Of course, I saved room for the Flan con Quesa Crema (flan with cream cheese). static.px.yelp.com/bphot… At first I was a bit confused, the flan was much more creamier than usual. Hahaha. I thought they might have cooked it wrong or something, but it turns out they bake the cream cheese directly into the flan. I think I was expecting cream cheese on top or something. Hahah. Just shows you how much I cook. The flan is drizzled with caramel. I used to go here a lot a few years ago. They always had good food, cheap prices and good service. They now have new owners, but they still offer the same foods and service. Only thing I miss is the decor. The old decor had a more cozy feel with quaint sculptures on the walls. The new decor has a more formal feel to it and features large paintings. You can find Madrid at the corner of Cortez and Beach in the same tiny plaza with the gas station and laundromat.

The food is unsatisfactory. They do not season it properly or at all. For example a Lechon Asado (fresh roasted pork seasoned in mojo sauce) valued at $9.95 (According to the advertised menu, when you get to thte restaurant its actually $12.95). The pork was excessively dry and was never seasoned in mojo sauce. The rice lacked salt and the black beans were cold. The 'Relleno the Papa' was somewhat decent but definitely overpriced at $2.50 in the Menu but $3.25 at the restaurant. The Customer Service was mediocre at best, they were slow in preparing the food and on top of that one of their employees actually charged on the card of one of my co-workers over $117.00 for the bill when all he ordered was a porkchop, his check could not have been worth more than $15.00.They also serve this plain pork sandwich. The pork sandwich is nothing more than a single slab of leftovers from the day before thrown onto greasy bread garnished with a handful of oil soaked diced onions. I am pleased to know all of the wonderful things that Amber (Owner) has going on in her life like buying out a once, wonderful and reasonably priced restaurant, and flipping it into a shack that serves something slightly more appetizing than what I would find in the diaper of my one year old.. After waiting over twenty minutes just to start paying for the food we ordered 45 minutes before.. the small talk and friendly banter may be better suited for indicating to the 'authentic' cooks in the back that the inevitable diarrhea to come from this 'meat' should not be reheated and placed into a foam cup and labeled as black beans. It is clear that nobody working here has any food service related experience, mostly due to the fact that after asked ANY question, it is immediately answered by blissful ignorance and placing the blame on the previous restaurant employees (which... to my shock... who exactly is working there.. now?) . There is no sense of urgency and the lack of management is indicative of the fact that this place is a joke and misrepresents the fine cuisine of the Latin American community.

I have eaten here a few times, and enjoy the funky store-front vibe and the unpretentious service. The Ropa Vieja is good, and the piccadillo is also very popular. Of course, you can always get a decent cuban sandwich. Most dishes are served with yellow rice, black beans, and plantains. All good quality. While this is definitely not a white tablecloth type of place, the food is well prepared and high quality......not to mention authentic. Reasonably priced. Definitely a good place for lunch when you are tired of the same old stuff and want something different.

We went out to dinner here. The service was good but the food was barely -ok-. We probably would not return. For appetizers: The papa rellena (Beef) was GREAT. The empanada (Chicken) was ok, nothing special. The homemade sauce it came with was excellent! The pressed bread was good. Entrees: Bistec Palomilla - Salad was boring. Rice was not good. Beans were beans. Plantains were tasty. Steak was oddly marinated. And no steak knives, so tough to cut. Beef Burrito - Was good, although i would not get it again. Meat was seasoned good. Cheese on top was a montery pepper jack (not a fan). Service: Very good and ethnic Atmosphere: Not much of an atmosphere. Pricing: ok, good beer prices Average Bill for a beer, (2) appetizers, (2) entrees is $30.00.
