My first time going to a Japanese steak house and it was wonderful! I was on a date and we ordered the two person special which was steak lobster and shrimp for $65. Our chef was playful and I enjoyed the entire show! The food was delicious! I am definitely going back!

Why are the reviews so low?! This is my all time favorite Japanese restaurant/steakhouse!! A little pricey, but worth it...if I've had a good week at work or someone is taking me to dinner, WE ARE GOING HERE! Delicious. Best sushi and hibachi! I have never been disappointed here ever!!

I gave them one star because zero wasn't an option. They no longer had the sushi I wanted which is understandable. But they brought me soup and charged me even though I hadn't ordered it. I patiently waited while everyone else ate. Then I asked for a to go drink, after waiting for ten minutes we finally left since we saw our waitress taking another tables orders. This place has gone down hill! I get better customer service at McDonalds. Save your money and avoid this establishment.

So I had to work at midnight on Christmas Eve, and my friend wanted to do something nice with me before my shift, and since I had never been here, i was excited! I love me some hibachi, but hadn't had it in a while, because I hadn't found a place I really liked..well the search is over we made a reservation to be on the safe side, and its a good thing we did, everyone else had the same idea for Christmas Eve dinner!! We were seated right away at a table with some other folks, ready for the food and the show! Orders were taken, and I went with two sushi rolls, a spicy tuna and a salmon lovers, and also a hibachi entree with scallops and fried rice..my friend and her daughter had a spicy tuna tempura roll and a rock and roll, and also shrimp and scallop entrees for them as well Our soup, salads and drinks came out and they were yummy..and then the chef came out and started cooking the food..i LOVE the showmanship of a hibachi chef..the skill of the fire and the chopping and the flipping the eggs and such..i still love the little onion train they do, and smile like a little kid..this place did not disappoint, he was making jokes with us and cooking that food all at once.. My sushi came out while we were watching the veggies get cooked..it was fresh and delicious, gotta love spicy tuna and salmon..then we got some vegetables, and then some fried rice, and then some scallops for me, which were cooked perfectly and seasoned really well..and then some noodles..it was so much food! i left with a to go box to snack on at work.. I am already plotting when I will go back here!!

We stopped here while in town since we had been craving hibachi. Not the best hibachi experience I've had. The show, if you call it one, was brief. The chef did not interact as much with the group as I have seen at other hibachi restaurants, he was good with the kids. As far as the food goes, I was disappointed. The sauces and dressings seemed almost watered down. I ordered shrimp and chicken, my fav. The shrimp was ok, but the chicken was just grilled and served plain...no teriyaki?!?! I'd search around for other options if you're looking for hibachi.

I have been to many restaurants like Daruma but it is hands down the best. The service is always too notch and the food is amazing. Do yourself a favor and try any entree with a steak.

Hibachi is kind of a commodity. There might be an extra gimmick or two, or slightly different quality meat but I typically expect the following: -Clear soup -Iceberg salad with mysterious orange ginger dressing -Sake, and lots of it -A chef with a tall hat and a corny sense of humor -Exactly two shrimp, one of which I will have accepted in the form of a spatula toss from said chef -Fiery onion volcano -Too much fried rice -Mushy vegetables -Various meats that are salty and hard to chew Daruma comes through on 8/9 because I wouldn't have gotten any shrimp if I hadn't ordered them as an entree. They might sneak this past a less hungry customer, but I am not that man. They have also taken on the trend of giving you fried noodles at the end. When I was growing up, after the meat was served they cleaned the hibachi table with water from a plastic vodka bottle and a white rag. Now they accomplish the same task using lo mein noodles and serve them to you. Yum? The parking lot is a zoo, the drinks are expensive, and the hibachi is hibachi. Kanpai!

I didn't pick the place and I wasn't picking up the tab, so I can't complain too much. However, next time I get invited to the movies, I might suggest something else. There was a crowd of people around the hostess stand and several parties waiting for tables. Thank goodness we had decided to go with the Western table as there was plenty of those to go around. However, there was no hostess to be found. She finally emerged from the back kitchen where she had been preparing a take out order, so once that was all settled she was able to seat our party. The waiter who showed up to take our drink orders was super nice & I was disappointed he turned out not to be our waiter for the rest of the night. For my beverage I went with the hot green tea (I've been on a major tea kick lately) on this rather dreary evening. The tea had good flavor and was well brewed. We had some tuna tataki to start, along with two sushi rolls. The tuna was excellent, but the ponzu sauce seemed to be a little thin to me. The sushi wasn't bad, but it definitely wasn't memorable. For my main dish I went with the Tempura Shrimp Udon soup. The large cauldron arrived and my glasses immediately fogged as he removed the lid. The tempura shrimp were good and the noodles were cooked well, but that's about where the good part of the dish ended. I guess I'm becoming a little bit of a snob when it comes to Asian noodle soups. After some good pho here and some awesome ramen in So Cal, this tasted rather bland to me. Even my husband (who got to have some of my leftovers) said it tasted like Campbell's Udon. If I get invited out to dinner, I won't turn it down. But part of me regrets not suggesting we try the pho place on the other end. Oh well, next time.

I took my daughter to Daruma tonight for her 18th birthday and it was very disappointing. The hostess barely glanced at us, asked if we were all there or she couldn't seat us. The waitress didn't smile, served us a drink and we never saw her again. I told her I was a vegan and she rolled her eyes and no suggestions were made. We told them it was her birthday and no one. Came out and Sang to her. The table behind us got the song ad everything. When the check came 25 percent gratuity was added in? For what? Don't go! Bad food, bad service

If I could rate this restaurant less than 1 star I would. Tonight we visited with a party of 12 people for a birthday. Usually we make the extra 15-20 minute drive to wasabi at the town center but we decided we would give this place a shot. First off we sat down and noticed our plates and the ramekins for sauce had crusty food left on them like they had been rinsed and not washed, then the cook had no personality or talent for the job unlike the other Japanese restaurants we have been to, For the price you pay the portions are less than half of what you get anywhere else and it has no flavor. I ordered a filet and it was tough and chewy, we did not receive refills on our drinks the whole time we were there and when it came time to speak with a manager and explained our frustration he took our plates full of food and then brought us a bill with gratuity added. We will not return or recommend this place to family, friends, acquaintances or a stranger on the street. Take your money elsewhere and get a well prepared delicious meal worth your hard earned money along with some hilarious entertainment from highly skilled cooks.

I met some other girls here for a meetup and was hoping for a good dinner. It would have been so-so except for the horrible waitress that attended us. The food itself was ok. I ordered the chicken and got the usual rice, ginger salad, clear soup, and veggies. All of it was pretty good but none of it was anything to "wow" over. The chef put on a cool show and we enjoyed that. The food isn't why I am giving this place one star. The service is what has made me refuse to ever return here again. From the moment we sat down, the waitress made it very clear she did not want us there. She demanded my drink order as soon as I sat down. She did not refill any of our beverages, and was extremely curt when answering questions. When the chef had finished cooking, we were just starting to eat when she literally tossed to go boxes at us, with absolutely no regard that we had JUST started to eat. We caught them and sat them to the side, and made the comment that we were trying to eat. She came back two minutes later with our checks. Before I could even move the bill holder with my card she jerked it out from under my hand. When I got the bill back, she had handwritten her tip amount on our receipts for us to sign. There was no way I was going to give her a 20+ percent tip after the way I had been treated, and I did not appreciate her writing in my ticket. I scratched it out and wrote what I felt was fair, and another girl or two in my party did the same. I am all for tipping waitstaff, but I was not at all amenable to handing out extra dollars when I was made to feel so unwelcome and she didn't even do her basic job. This girl jerked up all of our tickets and tried to grab mine before I had even signed! We were just getting ready to leave when she came back and told me I needed to give her a bigger tip. I let her know that I was not writing in anymore of a tip because of the service I received and explained that the way that we were treated affected the amount of tip she received. After the other girls at the table pointed out several of the things she had done that night, she slammed the tickets and stomped away. At this point, I wished that I hadn't given her any tip at all. The food was okay, but the waitress ruined me for this place and I will never, ever visit this restaurant again.

Very good experience. Enjoyed the scallops and shrimp. Avoid the sushi though. Good lunch prices with a lot of food. Staff is friendly.

I just ordered over 100 dollars worth of take-out from Daruma for my coworkers and I was not impressed. The Godzilla roll that I ordered for myself was 9 dollars and delicious, however, it was tiny! The habachi lunch menu take out that my coworkers ordered was WAY too expensive for the amount of meat in the box. There were about 4 bites of meat and the rest of the box was full of noodles and rice. The food is delicious but the prices are outrageous. I will not order from here again.

This wasn't my first rodeo or first trip to Daruma Japanese Steakhouse, but it's been a few months since my last visit and I figured it would be a good time to write a review. The lobby was super crowded when I arrived, which made me thankful that we made a reservation for our party of eight a few days prior. Please note: Daruma won't seat you until your whole party is there. We decided to sit and have a drink at the bar, while we waited for our buzzer to go off. Daruma has a full bar and a good variety of Asian beer (Ichiban, Sapporo, Asahi, Kirin Light) available. I opted to get a Kirin Light. It was deliciously cold and definitely hit the spot. The bartender was attentive, quick, and very pleasant. Even though we had a reservation, we still had to wait for roughly 15 minutes. I didn't mind, since it was prom night and the restaurant was packed (BTW: I'm from the north, so I'm not really accustomed to this, but does the South really have prom goers go out to eat prior to the actual prom? Seems like a risky move considering at any time you could miss that shrimp the chef tries to fling into your mouth and then you'd get a big grease stain on that prom dress). Sorry, I digress. The waiter took our food and drink orders. I was a bit disappointed to learn that the server didn't really know what type of beer they had on the menu, nor was he very attentive when we needed to order another drink. Daruma's has everything from teppanyaki to sushi, so there should be something for everyone on their menu. I opted to get shrimp and steak teppanyaki, fried rice, and ginger dressing. We were quickly brought out clear soup, which quite honestly is the best clear soup I've ever had at an Asian restaurant. It's salty and simple. I only wish the bowls of soup were larger! Our salads quickly came out after we were done with our soup. I also really like Daruma's ginger dressing. It's super simple, but it really pairs nicely with the crisp iceberg lettuce. Our chef came out, greeted everyone, and proceeded to cook our meal. He was really jovial! First up: Fried rice. The rice was perfectly cooked: some pieces got crips, that one can only get on the grill and other pieces of rice were nice and soft. I'm pretty sure I had a few boxes of rice piled onto my plate. The chef was nice enough to give me a second helping of rice. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or bad thing, but I'm taking it as a compliment. I proceeded to eat (what seemed like) my weight in rice. Second: Vegetables (onions, zucchini, broccoli, and mushrooms). Everything was grilled and seasoned. They were tasty, but I wouldn't say they're the best vegetables I've ever eaten. Third: Shrimp: I'm not a huge shrimp eater, but Daruma seems to be the one of two places I'll venture out and eat shrimp. I think I like them so much because a. The chef will throw one into your mouth and b. They're cooked simply. Regardless of the reason, they were delicious. Fourth: Steak. The steak was cooked well (not well done, but medium rare). It was perfectly pink in the middle and pretty rich. The only complaint is the chef didn't cut the fat off the steak before he served it (they normally do). Fifth: Noodles. The noodles are "meh". I mean after you've eaten about five pounds of food, you're not really in the mood for noodles. FYI: If you have an affinity for shrimp sauce, you have to try Daruma's shrimp sauce. It's by far the best one out there. I believe that half the experience of eating at Daruma/any Japanese Steakhouse is the entertainment factor. All their chefs seem to have really great outgoing personalities. The other half is the food. In my book I'd give Daruma a four out five stars. Pro: Obscene amounts of food (if you order one of the Teppanyaki entrees), shrimp sauce, the chefs, and overall atmosphere. Cons: Smelling like Daruma Japanese Steakhouse the next day. The waiter: I wish he was a bit more knowledgeable about what was on the menu. Helpful Hint: Make reservations if you plan on dining on a weekend. Will I be back: Yes, because sometimes I like to eat my weight in food.

The food was good. However, the service was terrible. When I walked in to put my name in I asked how long the wait would be and the hostess told me she didn't know. Waited about 45 minutes to be seated, no big deal. Once seated, it was about 20 minutes until someone came to take everyone drink order. 30 minutes later the drinks finally come. My drink was half full, thought it was odd, when I went to pick it up there was a hole in the bottom and it spilled all over the table and my lap. It was about an hour later when they finally came out to make the food. 3.5 hours later I couldn't wait to take my food home to eat. The food itself was fine, but it will take much convincing to get me to go back because of the service.

We were at Daruma's a couple of weeks ago for a pre-wedding rehearsal dinner with family and had a blast. The food is quite tasty and the drinks just as tasty. The portions are ginormous. The servers are very attentive and fast!!! The chef/cook we had had a hilarious dry humor about him...very entertaining!!! I can see why my Jacksonville family frequents this location!!!

You know what to expect when you go to any Japanese Steak House, so the quality of food and service really differentiate one from the next. At Daruma the food quality and quantity were both excellent as was the presentation. There is another location in the Bartram area, and I have had good results at that one too. Parking at this location can be dicey, so be aware of that before you go.

Dinner and a show! You gotta love these places. I know i do and for many reasons. If you have gone to one you probably have seen everything there is to see as far as food shows. I have been to Benihana and Samurai here in Miami and have loved them. One of the main reasons is that you have food for days...omg yes you do. Even sharing a plate this night we still had food left over for the next day. :O Now to the nitty gritty. Would I come back here on my next Jacksonville visit? I can say yes. Why you ask? Well because of the service and the quality of the food was great. We came with a table full of people and had no complaints. They even did a choo choo train but to my disappointment wasn't what we thought it would be. There was no caboose or locomotive : ( Just a little onion with some steam... We were sat very quickly and attended to just as swiftly as we sat down. There is nothing really that makes this place stand out but it beats regular dining because you get a little show and the food is yum yum.

I was reluctant to go to Daruma last night because it has never been my first pick. I'm really picky about sushi. Our server seemed less than excited we we there, which was apparent when we saw her a total of two times. Our yakitori was pretty good & our clear soup was delicious. Our sushi was alright, but poorly wrapped. It fell apart as soon as we picked it up. I won't be going back.

Daruma is and has been a staple for myself and hubs for the past four years. When Lent rolls around it's our default Seafood place where I can still have my steak or chicken. They have the best sushi that we've found locally here in Jacksonville. I am as usual, attaching a few pics for reference. The parking is a bit tight but it's always worth the wait and the short walk. There are members of staff that know us by name and always assure we've had a great night out when we dine there. The only thing I may complain about if i had to pick fault would be if you want steak done medium well, ask for well. Enjoy your table company and relish in the fact they will oblige any special request you may have.

We went as a family of four, on a Saturday night. Were seated immediately at a table, though there was a line for the grill. Atmosphere is nice, a spacious room. The food was very nicely done. Steak teriyaki teppenyaki done just right, sauteed eggplant excellent. The sushi was presented well. The childrens portion was nearly as large as the adult. The four star rating is due to the service. While the server was friendly and courteous, he was clearly being run ragged due to a short-handed staff. Our order was a little slow, our drinks took a long time, and the salads didn't come until well after our entrees. We were also mischarged on the bill (in our favor, and we did correct it). We are chalking this up to a very busy night and assume that it wouldn't be so problematic in the future.

Our experience couldn't have been better. We went for my husbands birthday last night a little worried after our horrible experience at Tomo a couple of weekends ago. We were sat right away and our waiter was to us immediately. Our waiter was on the ball and was so energetic and welcoming! Our sushi, salads and soup were delivered in plenty of time to finish before our chef appeared. The chef could have been a little more entertaining but the food was so good and plentiful that we weren't concerned. And the prices! Not bad at all. Overall it was such a great experience that we will definitely be returning.

My son wanted to celebrate his 13th birthday at a Japanese Steakhouse. This was our first night of a 4-day vacation in JAX and I noticed that there were many options for Japanese. After doing some research on Yelp and other places, we decided on Daruma. It was a great choice! The food was excellent and the hibachi chef was very entertaining and personable. We loved the Birthday Song that the waitstaff performed and the gong was a great touch! Excellent meal to celebrate a special occassion.

I went on a Friday night and there was an hour wait to get to a Hibachi table. Other than that everything was great. The sushi was fresh and we had an entertaining Hibachi chef. No complaints regarding the food. I'll go back for sure.

The food here is excellent and there is even a show with dinner! Seating is somewhat limited. So I would call ahead if you paln to have a big crowd. On this last visit we got there right before closing (like 10 minutes). And they still seated us and took our order although extremely quickly and in a rushed fashion. We packed the food to go and drove up to the beach and at there. I go back to the food was excellent. My Tempora was nicely cooked and well seasoned. While his sushi was great and fresh - although a little too spicy for my taste. (I would normally pass on sushi on the end of a restaurants day but this place is golden.)

For years now, Daruma has been one of my cousin's default restaurant--the choice for birthdays, big group outings, or just when she and I can grab time to hang one on one. I've been here over and over, and have never been disappointed. Doing anything other than sitting at the Hibatchi table seems crazy to me. The chefs are fun and funny, the food is delicious and the portions are really more than you can finish in one sitting. My favorites? Go with chicken and shrimp, and get them to do the volcano with the onions, that just kills me. Really the best compliment I can give this place is that its never let me down over the years. There just a great feel here and quality food. Don't miss out.

While there are Many Japanese Steak houses in Jacksonville, this one is my favorite. I have eaten here many times and every single time the food is consistently superb! The chefs are the best part, all I have had have always been very funny, talkative, and above all else great at entertaining you while they cook! By far the best out of the other steak houses I have been too. If you have been to a Japanese steak house you should know what to expect out of the food. Every entree come with clear (or miso) soup, a salad ( their house Ginger dressing is my favorite) , fried rice, noodles, vegetables (squash, mushrooms , onions etc.) and your choice of meat! I really enjoy their teriyaki chicken and steak. To go along with the food they have a delicious shrimp sauce , and a great Ginger sauce. The atmosphere is complemented by the decor. A large and attractive fountain is in entry way and the walls covered with Japanese shades. The lighting is very low. I would sediment recommend this place to anyone wanting a nice japanese steak house experience. P.S. They also have great sushi!

  • Sid S.

Sushi is great, no complaints there, but cook table was only so- so. Calamari was big thick rubbery slices, shrimp was bland, steak only average. Great if you just want sushi, go somewhere else for the hibachi.

  • Nick V.

Pretty good food, and service (most times) they are friendly and the proportions of food are good, unless you get a single item, I recommend getting a combo if you are really hungry. The Steak is always tender and juicy, and the chicken will melt in your mouth, as well as most seafood. however more than once my steak has been undercooked.

a "go-to" when I am home in Jacksonville. The service is good, the food is good, and the prices are decent. No it isn't AMAZING teppenyaki, but it is done well enough that I can't complain too much. We typically go around lunch hours, but have been to dinner service. Everything is pleasant. Haven't had a bad experience yet.

Celebrated my 35th birthday. The wait was long for a relatively "not full" restaurant. We were seated and the show started promptly. The food was ok, but the chef was funny. I enjoyed the experience.

I don't have a whole lot to say about this place except it's your typical Japanese steakhouse - and that's a good thing. Quality is good and the chefs are entertaining. It's a fun place to go for a birthday. Prices are a little high but that's expected b/c you're paying for the entertainment too. I'm not rushing to go back just cause it's a little expensive but I definitely recommend going for a fun date night out.

Great Japanese place. A chef cooks in front of you and the food goes straight from your grill to the plate. They're quite talented. I had the combination plate with chicken, shrimp, and sirloin steak. It was absolutely delicious. The fried rice was quite good as well. However, I wasn't really crazy about the vegetables; I'd advise eating them with the fried rice, and even then they aren't that great. Overall, though, an awesome experience. This place is perfect for a large group, though you can have just as much fun with your date or friend.

Go here for lunch. Grilled chicken for 7.99 is a bargain. really youre paying for 2 meals because the portions are so generous your take home box makes another.

Went here for lunch and was not disappointed. The lunch selection was not very broad, but was very tasty. The portions were pretty big, and it was a good value. Nicely decorated with a friendly staff. My wife and I plan on going back for dinner one night so we can get the Tepanyaki (table side) preparation.
