We were looking for Greek and found this on Hwy 1. Great gyro and fries were just right. Had the mushroom soup which was very tasty, too. Hummus was fresh and nice. The service was fast and friendly. I will come back again, without question.

I'd prefer my food without the attitude. Sadly, the blonde girl behind the glass was far too busy flirting with my man to get my THREE ingredient item that I ordered correct. Yes.. gyro meat, on a pita, with sauce on the side.. which I must have said at least three times. As far as the quality of the food, the boyfriend enjoyed his very much. Not sure what he had besides a bowl with several of their items mixed in, and he liked it very much. I can only comment on what I ate. The lamb gyro was good, better than some but definitely not the best in JAX that I have found. Perhaps that is a matter of taste. I found the meat to be slightly greasy and over seasoned. It was fresh and I did watch her slice it myself so I will give them credit for that. The food in the "Buffet" looked fine. Was a bit confusing about the "buffet" as we were just shown the pans behind the glass that they make the orders from - not sure if they were to serve you, or there was an entire buffet set up somewhere else we did not see. They have several choices for your "platform"... pita, bowl, something else and a wrap... aka tortilla. Which I found to be an odd choice in a Greek place. When trying to order my three ingredient item.. it was probably one of the most uncomfortable and confusing times I've ever tried to order food. I'm not sure if it was from all the choices, or the fact that my server was too busy flirting with my man, but it was uncomfortable enough that I had to leave the shop. I suppose it's my own fault for not watching her make my order that I found it was not what I ordered when we got home. It was covered with their "cucumber sauce".. which I also found confusing as I wasn't sure if it was tzatziki sauce or something else special and different about this place. I've been to plenty of Greek places. For the record, the best gyro in jax is a guy at the Riverside Arts farmers market. I believe it's called International Deli. Just look for the vertical roaster. It's delicious. You also need to get the sauce on the side from him as he drowns it, but the meat is superb!! So what I ended up getting was in fact a pita, with the correct meat, covered in sauce (gah!!!) with lettuce... which is also gross when it is greasy and warm, but maybe you like it that way... and also not part of my three ingredient order lol. I did pick the meat off and that's what I had. Not sure who the owners of this place are, and if it's not the blonde chick then I'm sorry for leaving such a low score. But I cannot remember a time when I have felt so uncomfortable in a place that I needed to walk out. It was not just the blatant flirting, but she gave me a fair dose of attitude as well. Which, is inappropriate and rude from ANYONE, much less a server in a restaurant. And in case you are thinking this is just some jealous, insecure woman getting back at some girl. No, that is not the case. I am plenty cute and have no problem keeping my man around. I am not worried about the gyro girl lol. But maybe the owners should be... we definitely will not be back and will continue the search for a delicious gyro in jax. Hold the attitude. And for the love of God... put the sauce on the side!!!!! Wanted to add I received a very kind apology from the owners of this place. Thank you for that. And as I said, the boyfriend loved his food and it did look like they do care about putting out quality food for their customers. This review was more about the service than the food.

this place is pretty good! I spent over 6 months on Greece and this is as close as it gets to the real deal! and the staff is super nice. just wish the portions had more meat.

Super friendly staff. Delicious fresh food, huge portions. So glad to have finally found a good gyro in Jax.

I am so glad I decided to try this place out for lunch today. Very clean lnside. Staff is very friendly. Ordered the chicken gyro special and it was huge. They are very generous with all their portions. They shave the chicken in front of you. It was so juicy. I will be going back at least twice a week.

  • Niral S.

I waited 20 minutes to get to the front to be told that they're too busy and can't replace the chicken so that is not an option. Will never go back to a place where the customer is not served.

My husband and I stopped in for lunch at the new Riverside location on Margaret St. I had a lamb gyro....the portion of meat was very generous...and served with a side. My husband had the buffet and went back for seconds and one third! Would recommend this for a quick dinner too.

When I'm hungry, I won't take the time to photograph my food. When I am hungry and the place smells this amazing, I don't even think about my phone until my plate is empty. We came in for lunch. I had the Lamb Gyro with fries. This was the largest gyro I have ever had anywhere. Lettuce, tomato, cucumber sauce and a pile of lamb. Which I will say eas very tasty with nice crispy bits. It was so large that they have to put your fries in a second basket. Grab a fork too because you will need it at the end of your pita when you find a handful of your gyro at the bottom of the foil wrap. The hubs went with the buffet option. The server will load up a huge plate with just about anything behind the glass you choose. He had the brown rice, chopped salad, a scoop of chickpeas, a ground meat mixure, hummus and three grape leaves (extra .99 cents) and she topped it off with a pile of the Chicken Gyro slices. A warmed sliced pita on the side as well. He was happy and surprised that it was so inexpensive. They also gave him a slice of baklava and a tradional tea with a sugar cube at the end. The place is small but there is plenty room for diners to sit or go. I noticed just about everything is from Ikea. The ladies working aren't fluent English speaking so you may have to repeat things. They do continually check on you when they aren't preoccupied with other patrons. We will definitely return.

Very rare that I visit a place 3 times in one week, but this the place! The staff treats me like family, and I can't get enough if the food. The new buffet is amazing, great value and not what you'd expect from buffet. Fresh and delicious food. Here's hoping this place enjoys much success. It's worth the drive from Ponte Vedra!

WOW, what can I say about Choban Grill other than "WOW". We (hubby and I) saw Choban Grill when we were in the area for our hair appointment and decided to give it a try with a friend. What a pleasant surprise. Upon walking in, Sarah (spelling?) greeted us warmly. We were still waiting on our friend to arrive, but in the meantime, she explained the food to us. You can tell she is so passionate about making delicious fresh food and proud of them. And rightfully so. First of all, we were both excited to see two types of meats roasting on vertical spit, looking so delicious. Then she explained their buffet dishes as well. We were very torn about whether to get a gyro (main reason we stopped in) or the buffet (everything looked so yummy and fresh). We ended up ordering the gyros with fries because we just have our mind set on gyro and neither of us was willing to give that up to order the buffet so we can share (half gyro, stealing bites from the buffet). LOL... yeah that was sad. Sarah probably saw our mental and whispering debate and took pity on us because after we ordered our food, she gave us a small sampling plate composed of a few dishes to try from the buffet. Oh and it was gooood. Everything we tasted really was fresh and tasty. I am pretty sure we will be back shortly.

I had high hopes after reading all the reviews. I went with a co-worker yesterday around 2pm for a late lunch. I got the lamb gyro and tabouli. Very reasonably priced and the food was quite good although they were almost out of meat. My problem was the service. I waited for almost 10 minutes at the counter with no acknowledgement or greeting... and being the only customers in there, seems a bit unecessary. Then it took another 10 minutes to get my food froma choosing of essentially all pre-made food. We were not given an option for a buffet that I read about in all the reviews and the two girls behind the counter seemed very disinterested in giving us any feedback on what to get. Maybe I will give it another try during more regular lunch or dinner hours but if I am miffed with poor customer service, I generally don't return.

Excellent! Stopped in for lunch and the place was rather quiet. Clean establishment and friendly service. The food was all fresh and delicious not to mention pretty affordable! Can't go wrong here if you care for Greek food.

I grew up in the burbs of Chicago. A mecca for foodies and food heritage from the globe to unite to tempt you with with their flavors. One of my fondest memories was to go to our local gyros joint and dive into the perfect mid day wrap. Having said that, this perfect little restaurant not only rekindles all my nostalgia, but throws it into top gear with flavor combinations that are off the charts. They make their own gyros. Let me repeat, they make their own gyros. They stack it up, then marinate it, then douse it in some love potion or something amazing and then shave it apart after each piece has the perfect amount of bark. Each strip of meat is crispy on the outside and succulent on the other. They top it off with a fantastic tzatziki sauce and be sure to add the cucumber /tomato/onion salad on top. The service and genuine kindness is reason enough to go back. They do get busy and the line can grow, but the best food usually always has a line. If you are eating greek, you're eating here.

  • Ava G.

Went here today for lunch based off other Yelper reviews. First impressions of the joint are that it was nicely decorated and that they have a concise menu above the line in plain view. I came in for the Chicken Gyro which you have a selection from several vegetables (shredded iceburg lettuce, tomatoes, onions, kalamata olives, etc.) From previous experience in other Greek restuarants tabbouleh always seems like a staple for a gyro. I asked the lady if the pita comes with tabbouleh since I didn't see it listed and she said Yes. Once I proceeded to the check out line I upgraded to a combo (fries-or side salad, small drink) Total was $9.08 after tax. But I was not served fries, they considered my tabbouleh as the side. Which is totally fine if the woman before made that clear. That aside, the food was really great. And the gyro left me more than full. P.S. If any Greek food lovers are in the Orlando area, Tabouli's Grill is the best gyros I've ever had. Unlike Choban, you get to create your own pita!

Not impressed. Dirty and hot inside. Wife got a Greek Salad and they didn't even have plastic forks. BRING YOUR OWN FORK!! Fries were soft and not crisp. The owners aren't even Greek. Will not be back!!

Got the lamb gyro and falafel pita. Nice and quick service. The portions are huge, I'd recommend if in the mood for quick Greek food.

I was impressed by the combination of value, quality, taste, and the staff. The food was good, authentic and priced very well. The staff was super nice and brought us out some complimentary hot tea. They also let us sample several things that we had not ordered.

The lamb gyro is always tasty. They are pretty fast with the line and their fries are good as well!

Great food, prepared quickly at a fair price. I normally get the lamb gyro with fries. Highly recommended. Opa!

I've been here a few times with the family and it's been a mix of buffet and ordering food from the menu. The food is very good. The hummus seems to be made in house because one day it was nice and thick and on another day it was a little thinner than usual. The tzaziki (sp?) sauce is delicious I can't help but slather it all over my chicken and pita. I do wish the pitas were made in house but I can see how that would be time consuming. My only problem with the buffet is that it's not a self serve type of buffet. It's set up like a chipotle style counter and they serve you. While I can imagine that they portion control and reduce more waste that way, I personally don't like all my foods slopped on top of eachother. I prefer to set up my own plate and portions. But that's just me. If this wouldn't bother you then I suggest you try the buffet. Now, the buffet does NOT include any type of gyro meat. It's usually a cubed chopped chicken or beef but they will tell you ahead of time. There is tea and baklava included in the buffet price but it's limited to one serving per person. So no going here and trying to drown yourself in baklava because it ain't gonna happen. Their baklava is really good. Very, very good but the portion is very small and 99 cents a piece. $1 isn't bad but I personally feel that for the size piece you get it's a bit expensive. Overall I say go and give this place a try. They are friendly and have good service. :-)

We have been to Choban Grill twice now, after having just recently discovered this place. The first time, we cannot resist trying out their gyro, which was superb. We both vowed to come back and try the delicious looking buffet. That's why we came back so quickly after trying Choban the first time. The buffet was pretty good. It's not a 'server yourself' buffet though. They basically take a plate and go through each of the items asking what you would like to try and fill the plate for you. The food tasted good, especially since it is still a buffet. But I wonder how they will be able to keep it up if more people were to show up. Having a 'server' spooning out dishes on a plate for each customer can get a bit more time consuming, especially if people were to go in for seconds. In addition, the portion was really big. It wasn't an issue for me and my wife to finish since she actually proactively ask for less portion and less dishes. She knew she can always try the various dishes on my plate for just a taste. Even then, she still had trouble finishing her plate and had me help her. We both would feel bad if we had to leave food on the plate. But overall, we had great experience both times. The staff is very friendly. Everyone we've come across have been really nice. We also got the Turkish tea, was was a nice way to wrap up our meals. The gyro portion is big and their fries are indeed, delicious. We would go back again when craving a good gyro.

  • Joseph S.

To be honest, I really wasn't too impressed. My expectation was very high after reading other reviews. My order was simple: a gyro. It took 30 minutes, and really wasn't worth the wait. Although the owner was apologetic and offered me free Turkish tea, I would have rather spent the time driving to "The Original Tunis" for a good gyro in jax.

Wow. Great lamb and chicken. Tabouli was fresh and tasty. Excellent service. They want you to be happy. Definitely coming back!

Great greek spot! I'm so happy I got a chance to grab me a gyro. Me and my love both got a gyro with fries, drink, 2 slices of baklava and complimentary tea and only spent around $20 which I think is a great deal for two. Man that gyro....my mouth is watering thinking about it. Since I loved the gyro so much, that's rpob what I'll stick to, but I'll keep an eye out on other reviews to see what to try. Pop in for lunch or a quick dinner. This place won't disappoint! Oh! I meant to add the staff is extremely friendly and nice. I felt like I was eating at a close friends house.

My mom and I stopped in to Choban Grill for lunch since she works nearby and her co-worker really liked it. We both went with the special, which was a chicken gyro with fries. The woman working put a couple of pitas in the little heater/press thing and while we waited, a man came in. Apparently he is a regular so she started getting his food together. Then she grabbed the pitas and wrapped them up for him and put two more in the press. He paid and was gone before our pitas even came out of the press. It was sort of odd that she basically skipped us to get his food together but whatever. My mom didn't want fries but we were told the price was the same whether we got fries or not because the special is cheaper than the item normally is on the menu. We were handed a small basket of fries and a man (I assume the owner) told the woman who put them together (a different woman from the first one) that she should have given us half of what she did. We actually paid for 2 orders so I don't really understand but whatever. The owner also heard my mom say she should have gotten something more healthy and gave us a little cup of chopped tomatoes and cucumbers with a stuffed grape leaf to try. The gyros were insane. Stuffed beyond belief with tzatziki sauce (LOTS of tzatziki sauce), lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and chicken (cut straight from a rotating spit thing). Really tasty but very difficult to eat (we both ate the last part with a fork because it was too much). The fries were good, they had some flavoring and were crinkle, which I prefer. As we were eating a woman (another one, I think they had like 5 people working in that small space) brought us out tiny cups of Turkish tea, which was really nice. It basically tasted like regular tea with honey and was a nice way to wrap up the meal. The space itself is on the small side and the tables are a bit crowded together. It also felt a little warm in there to me (and very warm near where the meat was cooking). They have a couple of tables outside but it's August and I'm not sitting outside at lunch time if I can help it. The food was great and the service was friendly but a little odd to me. The portions are very generous for the price. The parking lot is a bit crazy at lunch time but it's a great choice if you're nearby.

Been here several times. Awesome gyros made from fresh ingredients. Lamb or chicken is shaved per order. May have been a little bit of a wait but definitely worth it.

  • JJ H.

The gyro was pretty good but a little bit dry I would recommend to get a sauce with it for an extra charge which would definitely make they gyro taste much better. I tried thier eggplant salad and it wasn't great I would rather have thier other salads The place is small, nice for a quick lunch or a take out.

Just had the buffet and was one of the tastiest meals in a while for lunch. The staff are so pleasant and they all are going out of their way to make coming here a must. The mini dessert and the hot tea that they served topped off the meal nicely.

Omg, Omg! Cheap, fast, healthy, huge portions and quite authentic. My wife and I have friends that live in Greece. This food is about as authentic as it gets. Massive portions and 3 cute girls behind the counter that are very friendly. I would say we got about 3 pounds of food for $13.

I'm not greek, so I don't know what 'real' greek food tastes like, but if Choban's grill is an indication. ... I'm hooked. It was really really, really good.

Being OCD and all, I can't really eat out much. This business is so well maintained. Super clean and spotless. Customer service? I, yet have to see such an amazing customer service. Very warm and friendly staff. Family owned business. Everyone has knowledge and they are all very passionate. Food? Can't even compare the quality. Absolute best!!!! Food is As fresh as it gets..... Homemade. They are very reasonably priced. Honestly, I would be willing to pay 3xs what they are charging. I encourage everyone to give them a try.... You'll be pleasantly surprised :) bon appetite :)

When I saw five stars with almost 30 ratings, I thought it would be mind-blowing but alas, it's just ok. Serving and price is very decent. Decor leaves a great deal to be desired and while they were friendly, I got that "I'm bothering you" feeling when I ordered something that I guess took a little time to make - a gyro pita. My first visit was a three star one, but I'll give it another shot in the future.

I'm actually in the parking lot writing this review so I wouldn't forget. The service is great, very friendly the food was even better. I got a lamb gyro w/ fries and veggies on the side and the most perfect little square of baklava. They actually slice the lamb from the thingamabob and aren't stingy with it at all :) And I looooved the little cup of traditional Turkish tea they brought me (a gesture of hospitality). I had a long day and it made me smile. Will def come back and tell friends

Very good lamb gyro! Made fresh and very quickly. Very clean store. Would definitely recommend if you were in the mood for a gyro. Staff was friendly.

Good Gyro. Good service. Not too many good gyro places in that part of town. I was happy to try it. We got there and the gyro meat wasn't quite ready. So they gave us a free appetizer plate while we waited. The appetizers were good but I was really looking forward to the gyro. The gyro met my expectations. My wife and son liked it too. They did serve a lot of fries with the gyro too. Looking forward to another visit!

There is no value below zero. The lamb was dry, I did not get anything on the Gyros that I wanted except the dry lamb. They could not understand what I wanted. The best part was walking out the door, never to return.

Had the chicken gyro and it was amazing... So much for your amount of money. This will be the place I go to when I'm feeling like some good Greek food. Awesome place.

So happy that I found this little gem. I had the buffet and the quality of the food was fantastic. I loved the lamb, chicken, and baklava. Choban is a great value. I had the buffet and a fountain drink and it came to under $10.50. Pay this place a visit even if you're on the fence about Greek food. You certainly won't be sorry. Enjoy.

Super crowded layout and not much seating. Lamb gyro was "ok" - nothing special. Almost a little too crunchy for my taste. Crinkle fries were good but had a strange seasoning on it - like cumin?

  • Debbi C.

What a great choice for lunch! We went in and were greeted by a beautiful lady behind the counter. Two spits with lamb and chicken were going and enticing our senses... Felt the heat radiating when we were close, smelled the flavors wafting through the air, heard the sizzle and saw the juiciness.... There was no doubt what we would order. I got the gyro with a side of veggies and my hubby got the gyro with fries. Both of us ordered no onions on the gyro. Talk about amazing.... The freshness of the meat, the veggie toppings, the tzatziki sauce.... Omgoodness! The fries were freshly made and well seasoned. It was just a great lunch at a fair price. Then we enjoyed the house tea and the baklava and they were wonderful. The tea was perfectly blended and hit the spot. And I can never resist baklava. There aren't many places to get a good gyro in Jax.... Now there is definitely a great place. Choban did not disappoint! We will go back!

The Achilles heel of your hunger!! We went for the buffet and were very impressed. Fresh food and ingredients. The lunch buffet comes with baklava and Turkish tea for 7.95! What a deal! Beautiful atmosphere and setting! Definitely worth your time to try!

A friend from work bought me a piece of their baklava. I almost said no thanks because of my previous experience from eating it here but I'm glad I took it. Who says no to free baklava anyway. I can say it does taste better this time around. Slices are still itty-bitty though.

I have been here 10+ times and am never disappointed. Usually get the Lamb Gyro and don't look back. It is incredible. The lamb is so savory, delicious and addicting!! The dinner buffet option is also great and you get a GREAT portion for 7.95 The staff is super friendly and work as fast as they can to get you fed. I rarely have to wait to long, but would gladly wait an hour for my Choban gyro if I had to. Jacksonvillians and out-of-towners this place is a must-try!

"Home Cooked Greek!" Owner was very friendly in this cozy Greek Restaurant with 2 spitz rotating lamb and chicken The Lamb gyro was the star of the show. It was fully loaded with delicious lamb and fresh ingredients. They were definitely not stingy on the protein and had great taste. They won me over on this one. The fries were also plenty but a little over seasoned. Will definitely be back for more!

Get Your Real On: Because when it comes to GYRO this is the real deal-o! Ate here for the first time and it will not be the last time. Growing up in Chicago it was impossible to find a place deserving the title of Greek cuisine, but this is the place. I no longer have to do I e to the diner at the beach and 3rd to get a good gyro.

Super friendly and very fast. By far the best Greek food around. I eat here at least twice a week. They offer the best deal around with their Gyro special, it's $5.95 and it's massive, and btw it comes with fries. I usually bring home hummus from here about twice a week too. The staff here are super friendly!!! My wife and kids love coming here too, and it's priced very reasonably.

Best place we've been to for gyro and chicken. Fresh gyro not prepackaged... Taste a world of difference! Friendly and excellent quality eats! Finally, a place for good Greek eats priced decently and fresh.

We tried Choban Grill for the first time today and we will definitely be back! The gyros were delicious, the service was friendly, and the restaurant was very clean. You must try the baklava, it was the best I've ever had. A gem in the Mandarin/Avenues area.

Really fresh ingredients! Large portions. Really good. We found this place throug Yelp, as we were traveling back from Orlando to Virginia. We are very glad that we found this place. The Greek salad was so good. They make their gyro meat on the Greek standing grill in front of you. I wish we had places like this in Virginia

Amazing service. FRESH local ingredients. Huge serving sizes. Great prices. I came in for the first time on Saturday and the staff was very sweet. They wanted to make sure our food was amazing. They even brought us some tea with cube sugar to top off a great meal. We will be back!!!

This is good - not the best I've ever had, but not bad for the price point. The food was clean and well prepared, but probably a little exotic for children. My 9 year old loved her chicken, but my 7 year old did not see anything there that piqued her interest. This is more like a lunch counter than a full restaurant, but is preferable to a greasy hamburger.
