Casbah Cafe Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

This place is exciting, especially all day Monday when hookahs and drinks are on special. (The other days of the week, happy hour ends around 7) The lamb is pretty good and the hookahs come with a free refill on the coals. Also, I'm a pilot so I really know what I'm talking about.

Four stars for ambiance, enticing belly dancers, an awesome patio, good food at reasonable prices, and a great drink list. One star deducted for crowds, crowds, crowds, crowds. And most of the crowd are near/recent 18 year olds who are excited about a cool place to hang out where they can do something exciting like smoke a hookah in a public place... legally! Still, despite the crowds, I really do love this place. It's more than just a restaurant. The atmosphere is pretty high and it turns just a simple place to grab a bite into an experience. It is true, you don't just go there for the food, but you go there for the food + fun + for real possibility of being "seen". If you're into that kind of thing, this is a really fun place to eat. Pertaining to the food... the standard fare is all very reliable... the hummus, the labneh, the grape leaves, etc. I love it all. They have a great deal where you can get three appetizers for $13.95. It's definitely enough to serve as an entire meal or is a great, inexpensive way to get some starters for a reasonably sized group. The Swordfish Kabobs [$13.95] are outstanding. I highly recommend them. The Malfouf [$9.95 - stuffed cabbage rolls] are my favorite thing on the menu but, even though they are still on the menu, I am pretty sure they no longer serve them. Still worth it to ask! If you go here, cross your fingers that you get to experience the belly dancers. They are sultry and beautiful and definitely enhance the experience! To tip them [which is their goal], just throw dollars at them and let them land on the floor. They will pick them up.

I love this place!!! The hummus is great and the rest of the food was pretty good. The atmosphere itself makes the Casbah Cafe one of the most fun restaurants you'll ever go to. My friend and I had to wait a while for our table but the bartender was friendly and attentive. Also, the tables are close together but we mingled with our neighbors. The service was good but kind of slow but this is not the place you should go if you are in a rush - you should be enjoying the ambiance, food, belly dancing and hookah.

Although I havent been to the Casbah in 6 years I always remember it being one of the best places to eat in Jacksonville! So much fun and delicious! I loved getting the milk and honey hookah. Can't wait to go back this year!

I have tons of great memories at the casbah! This is the kind of place that you gather as many friends as possible and eat, drink, smoke, and laugh! The atmosphere is always great, the food is pretty good. I would always order different appetizers for the table and a hookah and everyone would order from the long list if imported beers, and have a blast. It's also a great place for dates, it can be very intimate if you play it right!

Well, maybe it was just a bad night for the kitchen, but I had rocks in my tabouleh and microwaved plastic in my pita. Definitely my most surprising meal thus far LOL! Joy, our waitress was so sweet and looked like she was in need of a hug so I gave her one. Better luck next dish Casbah... Maybe I should have just ordered a hookah afterall.

I have frequented this place before the crowds got wind of this gem. I remember the quiet days and peaceful dinners on Saturday nights. You're lucky to get in within 45 minutes these days. It's very crowded, loud, and a long waiting time, but once you get your hookah on, a good brew from the bar, and some of their delicious lamb kabobs it seems that all the inconvenience melts away! Has high turnover because the staff seems always changing, but the service is just fine and the Casbah delivers.

The Casbah is great. When I first starting going here 4 years ago, the food was good but the service was horrible. It was so bad that after a few times I stopped going, which was a shame because I really liked the atmosphere of the place and the food was pretty good. Well I started going back about a year ago and was pleased to see their service had changed greatly. I see on some of the other reviews that people complained about the service, but the only problem I had was my server giving me a chicken kebab instead of a lamb one when I ordered a sampler. The chicken kebab was so good I didn't even care. Since then my servers are always checking to make sure everything is alright and refilling drinks. I only really order one thing every time I go with friends, which is the sampler for two. This gives you your choice of two kebabs and 3 samplers. I usually get the lamb and chicken kebabs with the grape leaves, humus, and stuff meat pies. Its a great deal, and if your not that hungry can feed three people. I don't hookah so I can't comment on that. My favorite thing to do is come during off hours when they are not busy, say during a Monday or Tuesday night, enjoy the setting by sitting outdoors, and relax with friends while eating some good food. Its not the best Mediterranean I've had, but its pretty good, and for Jax, I'm not sure if there is a place where you can do better than the Casbah.

The Sunday evening we ate at the Casbah it was not crowded. There were several groups of the younger crowd smoking hookah. I ordered a Vegetarian Old City Sampler and was informed that the price was $2.00 more because in was dinner hour. The platter has a variety of items, the hummus was great, grape leaves good and the tabbouleh was not the best. I thought that the meal was over priced ,as I've had better middle eastern food for less. The mint iced tea was recommended by the water and was refreshing. I'll go back and try the other items on the menu.

The Turkish coffee alone is worth a visit to casbah

Pros: Good food. Reasonable prices. Decent beer selection. Good amount of outdoor seating. Open late. Con: Amazingly slow service, always, any time of day.

A buyer of mine invited me to say thank you on their Real Estate transaction. it was my first visit. I love everything I ate. hummas, bread, barbecue or grilled steak plate (I haven't learned all the dishes) etc,..The tea with mint was refreshing. I can't wait to take my husband to it. The atmosphere was cozy and exotic. I loved the small country feel to it. seating was intimate and I can't wait to try more dishes.

This place is an icon of the Shoppes at Avondale if you ask me. The food here is quite alot better than most other places in town that are similar. I have been a patron of the Casbah Cafe for about 4 years now and at one point I would visit several times a week. This has changed now. The reason for the change is that I have become dissatisfied with the staff and the cutting back that has happened as well the "crowd" of people that visit the Casbah. Please do not get me wrong I congratulate the Casbah in its success. But the type of crowd that frequents there now has changed and evolved into something that personally I do not care for. This "crowd" as it be has gone from being mostly made up of locals of the area and hipsters to turning into 18 year old preppy, wigger, and redneck kids looking to be cool and smoke hookah. These kids do not go there to eat the wide array of middle eastern and Palestinian cuisine that the Casbah has to offer.... No they simply want to smoke the hookah and maybe get some kind of "high"(this high is only from them incorrectly smoking the hookah and over indulging, they aren't really high only light headed from depriving their brain of oxygen.) from it or whatever. This is evident so much that the restaurant had to impose a rule that says if you are only ordering hookah that you have to at-least order some kind of beverage that you have to pay for. My main issue with this is that these children come here and take up large amounts of seating for hours on end and aren't even eating at this restaurant while people like me and my friends wish to dine on the classic food that the Casbah has to offer.

Casbah has great food and is reasonably priced. My wife and I have gone during happy hour (Mon-Fri, 3-7) and left full for around $30. That usually gets us 2 drinks each, 3 appetizers, and a hookah! If you go, try the fried jibneh (fried cheese) and lamb kabab. If we take our child we sit outside under one of their many outdoor fans.

  • Merav B.

I have a middle eastern background and grew up on its cuisine, so I hold it to a high standard. Though Casbah's isn't the best I've ever had, it's the best I've tried here in Jacksonville. We always go with a Casbah Combo so we can order a range of appetizers - Casbah's strong point. Their tabbouleh and hummus are well done. Their falafel, though a little too heavy, has good flavor, as does the kibbeh. Their kebabs are well seasoned though can sometimes be overdone. The atmosphere is warm and lively, especially on a Saturday night when the lines are long and the air thick with a hookah haze. Overall, Casbah's is a fun place with good food at a great value.

This is my absolute favorite spot in Avondale! Extensive beer selection, incredible food, great hookahs, and the beautiful waitresses are definitely a plus. I always recommend this place to my friends. Do yourself a favor and pay a visit to the Casbah!

Love this place! Have to hit up again... great Mediterranean food. Amazing grape leaves, hummus, baba ganoush. Love them in general. LOVE their lounge. Of course the bellydancing is amazing! What's more is you'll find authentic middle eastern people hanging out here! There's also typical college crowd and variety of people and I love this about Casbah Smokes are good! Don't carry rose though, so that makes me sad... but it's great! Check it out! They also have american food, if you have some unadventurous people in your group! Awesome! FIVE stars!

  • Laurie D.

Casbah has a really great atmosphere. They have an eclectic selection of bottle beer from around the world. They also have a small selection of draft. I know very little about middle eastern cuisine I can only say that I really love their hummus. Only advice is to get there early on weekend nights.

She called and told me we were going to Casbah Cafe over in Riverside. Her treat. I said, How sweet, sounds good, what they got? She - It's Mediterranean basically and they feature hookers. Me - They have WHAT? She - They have hookers. Me - You're treating me to a hooker, could you spell that please? She - Laughing and snickering, H-o-o-k-a-h-s, must be my New York accent. Me - I was beginning to think...maybe I should go alone. She - You're sooo funny! We went with another couple, celebrating their coincidental Birthdays this month. They were veterans and made several suggestion on what to order. We ordered the Casbah combo for two; choice of three appetizers and two entrees. It was hummus with pita bread, spinach pies, falafel and stuffed grape leaves. Both entrees were lamb kabobs served over basmati rice pilaf. Here's the stack up; 4 Stars - Menu selection and imagination. 2 Stars - Ambiance (seated too close to the wait staff service station) 3 Stars - Lamb kabobs and rice. Tasty and tender but a little over cooked. 3 Stars - Hummus with Pita. 3 Stars - Spinach pies. 3.5 Stars - Falafel. 3.5 Stars - Stuffed grape leaves. 5 Stars - Undulating Belly Dancer. (but not the hooker I was promised) 1 Stars - Music was too loud when the dancer was undulating. As for Hookahs, have no clue, none of us smoke. My date did ask if I wanted a hooker after dinner... EXCUSE ME!?!?!? I opted for Baklava, and was disappointed I did.

Interesting atmosphere. Amazing authentic Middle Eastern food. Don't know about the service as I had the food to go. Live entertainment on Monday's. I'll definitely be back. I didn't go a full five of the smoke. But hey...it is a hookah bar...

  • Sarah Beth G.

Yes! Good, casual, often packed, laid-back, friendly, delicious food, all of these things are true. Inside they've got cushions for you to sit on the floor and this feels comfortable, not pretentious. Outside there's a nice courtyard of seating, not that outdoor terrace-overlooking-a-parking-lot that too many Jacksonville bars and restaurants seem to think is appropriate. I highly recommend the hummus & babba ghannouj. The falafel is pretty good, but not the best in town. Also, I didn't know grape leaves could be delicious until I ate them at Casbah.

  • Catie K.

Decent food, awful service! I've been a patron of the Casbah for the last five years, and have seen ups and downs with both the food and service. First, the falafel; there is no consistency at all with them and seem to have a different flavor and texture each time I go. The pita bread has shrunk over the years, the spinach pies have changed from a flaky crust to a doughy one, but at least the vegetarian dolmas are still good! Complaints aside, the food is all edible, I just expect some sort of consistency where flavor and texture are concerned. Even though I order the appetizer combo with the same items (falafel, hummus and pita, and vegetarian dolmas with a side of spinach pie) each time, it's like a different meal on every visit. Now, the service. It seems that whether there is one other table or ten the service always blows. We're talking slooooow. No problem if you're having a few drinks and smoking a hookah on a lazy afternoon, but big problem when you're trying to have a family dinner and children are present. Honestly, I've never had anything close to exceptional service here. But I keep going back in hopes that one day I will.

The Casbah Cafe is a great place to experience Mediterranean food cuisine. Not to mention on the weekends you can enjoy live entertainment in the form of belly dancing. Prices for food are reasonable. And the atmosphere is great for two or more. Service at times may be a bit slow but all in all a great place to spend your night.

Definitely one of my top restaurants in Jacksonville. It's casual, smaller and not grossly expensive. Fantastic grape leaves, hummus, lamb and other Mediterranean/Middle East specialties

Such a great indoor atmosphere and patio to boot, Casbah is a great, quirky hookah bar and restaurant located in a busy neighborhood of Jacksonville. Hookah options out the wazoo, an AWESOME selection of vegetarian dishes (I had eggplant and a cheese and veggie plate), not to mention meat dishes, and good wine options. My friend and I made buddies with a lot of the staff there - they are very knowledgeable on the area and its amenities. Hard to find such a casual but stylish surroundings elsewhere.

  • Nancy H.

Food's just OK. If you have had excellent Mediterranean fare elsewhere, you will be disappointed. This is an OK place to grab a drink with friends; it has recently generated a lively casual bar scene. The inside is smallish but there is an outside patio. I do have to make a comment about the beverages on tap. Unless something has changed, the beverages on tap do not taste "fresh" - it doesn't seem that lines are cleaned or replaced regularly.

I've been to the casbah twice. The first time I was with 3 friends and it was my first experience at a hookah lounge. I ordered the mint tea since everyone who wants to use the hookah has to buy a drink. The service was okay and I shared some food with one friend, it was great. I think it was a Friday or Saturday night and the place was oozing with hipsters. The people I went with all talk smack about hipsters but I could care less. The second time I went it was really bad. The service was terrible excluding one waitress who took it upon herself to try and salvage what was left of our already awful experience. Our waiter starting out had no idea what he was doing, he must have been high. When we asked for a refill on our tea he brought a pitcher out and just added to our glasses which were half full of water from the ice melting because it took so long for him to get to us. We saw him maybe 3 or 4 times the whole night, and the place wasn't packed like it was the first night we went. Our food tasted exactly like dirt so the owner gave us sweet potato fries free. He was excellent but it took him to try to fix what damage the waiter had done. Again, there were hipsters all over so expect that. Live music by a boy on acoustic guitar played inside but we sat outside. We stayed for about 3 or 4 hours until the place closed because we had to wait for our check since as I mentioned our waiter only came around 3 or 4 times. We finally got a different waitress and asked if she could give us the bill and she sent him outside and he complained to us about how he knew we wouldn't like the food and how when he refilled our glasses that it tasted diluted because of the extra ice in the pitcher and bla bla bla. That was the last time my friends and I went there. We now go to saharas which after only one visit there, we knew we would never go back to casbah because it just doesn't compare to saharas.

Ahhhh...I love a good hookah. The jazz on Sunday nights is well worth it alone! Listening to Coltrane licks as I puff away on a fruity tobacco, sipping my Red Whore Ale and pick at some yummy hummus. Casbah has a laid back atmosphere and is a great little local find! ;-)

I have been going for years, and it doesn't seem to the phase them. For some reason, in the past few years, the quality of things has gone down. It feels more grungy and dirty, and the energy is different. I miss the old Casbah. The food is still good, and it is a great place to go with friends and hang out for a long time.

  • David S.

I love this place! I've never eaten anything here that wasn't great. They have an excellent choice of beers. The Wait staff are very pleasant and good at making suggestions when you can't choose. There is belly dancing and of course hookahs. They even have free WiFi for those days when you need to do something on the computer while you hook out. My favorite dish is the lentil soup. It's like nothing I can make at home.

Rock the Casbah. Hmm, I wonder if I like this place just cuz it's always packed and has a good atmosphere or if I actually like the food. I've been here, oh about 3 times, the last was last night as I picked up some food to go for the Glabella. Got a chicken and shrimp kabob. One with coucous and the other with rice pilaf. Took them about 20 minutes to make, but I had a black cherry Lambic as I waited at the bar so it was all to the good. Actually, the food was worth the wait. Both she and I exclaimed over our food. The chicken was citrus-y with hints of an Indian curriness. Not spicy and well cooked. The rice was good as well. The shrimp were fresh and had a satisfying crunch when you bit into them. They didn't have a distinct flavor, except being fresh shrimp. The couscous was flavorful though. We both enjoyed it. Other times I've been there I've had a falafel plate. It was good, but not super good. The belly dancing scared my friend. He has a thing about bellies I guess. This joint is also cool cuz it's open from 12-2 every damn day. At least you know where you can get a late night grub-on and hookah it up too.

Boo. Overrated, loud and a magnet for those who really hate their dad's. Seems like there is a move towards things that are more fried and 3 days old.

Fantastic & quaint little Middle Eastern joint in North Florida. Hookah's, belly dancing, jibneh. The works! Me and my girls are partial to the grape leaves. They also have cider on tap. This is a good thing.

  • Prianka N.

Great place for late-night dining in JAX. It is very casual, the service is good, and the food is decent and comes out quickly. It definitely isn't the best Middle Eastern I've had, but it was pretty good! The chicken was juicy and flavorful, the rice was well-cooked and the tabouleh was very flavorful. The falafel was respectable and while the hummus and baba were not the greatest, they were still decent. The fattouch is a bit over-lemony and needed more sumac on the pita.

Had so much fun here a few weekends ago! Very hip atmosphere for a hookah lounge. Great music and outdoor patio is awesome!! My only gripe is that it took awhile to get some more coals... other than that BRAVO!! :) I'll be back for sure!

My favorite hookah joint by far. I recently moved to nyc and i miss this place a lot. I have been to just about every hookah bar up here and there really is no place quite like the casbah. Great food, great people, great smoke all at a resonable price. who could ask for anything more?

  • Jenn S.

i feel like this place is too 'hip' for its own good. theyre always overly packed. ill assume thats because it in avondale & most kids can ride their bikes or walk to casbah. the few times ive gone to casbah -- ive had to wait atleast an hour for a table. once i even waited in the rain. :( their food is alright, but REALLY salty and thats coming from a girl who LOVES her salt. the service is always great & i have to hand that to them. ive never had a bad server AT ALL. i just cant say that their food is anything to brag about. ive definitely had better. their hookahs seem to always burn my throat too. :( theres a few other hookah places that id prefer over casbah. though i will say -- the casbah is always a good time. i always run into old friends.

  • Shana C.

The food is always spectacular here! I recommend the Casbah Combo for two so that you can taste all the wonderful mid eastern delights. Fried Jibneh, Zeit Wa Zatar and Baba Ghannoush are our favorites for the 3 appetizers you can choose from and I usually get chicken kabobs and my husband goes for the lamb or kibbie...but who am I kidding everything I have tried here is wonderful. Add to it that they have an awesome wine list, a huge selections of draft and import beers and YES Jaime E....cider ON TAP(don't worry...I got excited over this as well)! The atmosphere is rocking, there are always people here and on a Friday or Saturday be prepared for a wait but know that with the hookahs and belly dancers that you are in for pure entertainment and a good time with friends if you take a group.

    (5)
  • Whitney W.

The Casbah's best asset is how freaking cool you feel whilst lounging on pillows, smoking a hookah. The lighting and decor is great on its own, but if the food was not good, too, it would not be nearly as fun. There are a variety of excellent vegetarian options, and the appetizers are great. The hookahs are superb, and the combination of flavored tobacco and a non-water base (like, I recall apple juice being an option with honey-flavored tobacco) is a great twist. I don't know if there IS another hookah bar in Jacksonville, but if there is, this one is still the best.

  • Fadi A.

I visited this place after reading great reviews on yelp, but boy I was fooled by them. This place SUCKS; personally this food is not even Mediterranean. The manager "Saed" claimed this restaurant to have Palestinian food and so is the chef who happens to be from there. This place is not authentic, I'm from Chicago and we Chicagoans know Mediterranean food, not a single thing from the menu I tried was good. The manager didn't even had the courtesy to apologies about the food but claimed that if I disliked his food then all the other Mediterranean restaurants food would be bad cause he is the "BEST" in Jacksonville. Visitors please save your appetite and try some other good food places, cause this food place is not worth your time. Lamb Kabab were tasteless, Keftah Kabab were shapeless and were made in a shape of Indian version of Seekh Kabab again if you just want to waste money and time this place is the perfect place for you and don't be fooled by other reviewers reviews cause obliviously they haven't tried an authentic Arabian meal EVER in their lives.

Best Middle Eastern food I've had in years, and I spent a lot of time in the Middle East, so I would know! The grape leaves have meat and are a must-eat! The Baba Ganoujh is awesome and the bread is legit! The hookah selection is fantastic. I had the Haight-Ashbury and it was very good! I recommend the hot spiced tea with the hookah! The service was spotty-our server reminded me of Zach Galifianakis' character in the hangover, but a little less attentive. I think he was smoking something too, but it wasn't hookah! If you want a great meal, wonderful entertainment (belly dancer on Saturday nights) great hookah in a great atmosphere, you should definitely NOT miss Casbah Cafe! The patio is great!

    (5)
  • ALex W.

The food is good and the tea is good but I can't get over the fact that the hookahs are way overpriced for the equipment they use. I'd recommend bringing your own hookah,or just skipping that part of the meal entirely. It looks a little run down. Not the worst but not the best either

  • Jenny Z.

Tried hookah for the first time with a few friends on a girls night out. I love the ambiance of the place. We had the Kebbe with meat which I was not particularly fond of. It just tasted like fried ground meat. The hummus was good. And then we had a cheese dish that the waitress recommended- which was just fried cheese. I don't believe I will be coming back

Great little place to relax with a friend and enjoy good conversation, decent food and hookah all night. I am especially fond of the outdoor seating; the lighting is beautiful with the trees all around. You can almost forget you are right next to the road and imagine yourself tucked away somewhere in nature. We shared a mezze combo: The hummus was amazing, as everyone stated, the falafel was tasty but a little over and the grape leaves were delicious with great acidity. Pita was nice and warm. The tzatziki sauce was weird and not what I expected: It was straight up sour cream and cucumber...I don't know if this was a mistake or just a different way to prepare it, it wasn't terrible it just threw me off guard. The service was o-k. It being a Sunday night it wasn't packed and I wanted to watch the end of an epic baseball game so we sat at the bar. The bartender was friendly and sweet, but totally forgetful and disorganized. If we didn't remind him of everything, we would have waited twice as long for it; because he was nice, and we were in no rush to get anywhere, I can't say it messed up our night or anything like that. However, if we were different people I can see where this would be an issue. He was very good about keeping our coals refreshed, which was fantastic. A wonderful Jazz band played in the background all night as we enjoyed our Casbah Girl hookah (highly recommended) and good conversation. Will definitely be back.

Very fun night spot in Avondale area. Stays open very late, usually past 2am even though that is the official close time. Mostly known for hookahs and very good middle eastern food. But they have a good craft beer list. One of the few places to find Lebanese and Turkish beers in the area. Plus they carry local Jacksonville beers on tap and have some Cigar City beers in bottles.

    (4)
  • Emily B.

I like this place because it is cool and different and they have delicious food. The hookah is always good and they have a large drink menu. Outdoor seating has something to be desired and the little chairs inside are terribly uncomfortable. But I always end up going back because it's a lot of fun! Friday's and Saturdays they have belly dancers too!

Great food. Perfect for a relaxing night out. The rosa red wine is out of this world,I would've gone through an entire case if I wasn't careful. The music is great too. All in all, a great place to go.

Where to start...well great food, yummy wine, and beautiful dancers! One of the original Mediterranean style restaurants in Jacksonville. They have lots to offer depending on your visit. I bring the family for lunch and the girls love the dancers and always get up there and shake it with them lol! Then in the evening it's a great place to grab dinner with friends or have an awesome date night. Wine selection is pretty good...if your like me and enjoy a full bodied red Bulls Blood will be your jam also my favorite hookah is rose with milk or the blue mist. Really relaxed atmosphere with a very chilled vibe. Get there early it gets full fast!

  • Erikka N.

They have a wide variety of beers...lots of local brews, which is always a win in my book. The hookah combos are good as well. The service and decor is the problem. The servers aren't very attentive and the furniture is quite worn.

  • Mike G.

This was like my fourth time going to this place for a group outing and this time was better than times before. We had the usual hookah, the strawberry to be exact. It was pretty good, the atmosphere was relaxing. Our server was amazing! Sorry to keep it short, but it's really that simple. I would best describe this place as a nice little neighborhood hookah bar. The food is good, the drinks are as drinks are! Enjoyable!!! Try this place out and form your own opinion.

Oh Casbah. 10 years ago, you were so good. The kabobs, the appetizers, the hookahs....so good. I don't remember when you went sour but we haven't been in several years and probably won't.

The food is good but, it is a bit cramped with so many people on a Friday night. We went in without a reservation and had to wait outside for 10 minutes. The place was packed. We ordered humus and olives and the food was decent but, a bit overpriced. The hookah was ok but, a bit strong and smokey? The belly dancer was strange the fact that no one clapped after her performance and then she clapped for herself? The music was ok but, the service wasn't good. She wasn't really doing her best serving us. It was also very hot in there. I don't know if I will return.

It has pretty good Middle Eastern food, and also guava juice. Not great parking but it's located near other cool small businesses. It smells like hookah and cigarettes a lot which is gross, but the waitstaff are nice and the bellydancers are really fun to dance with.

Intimate, cozzy, quaint, laid back, unassuming place tucked back in avondale. Great for smoking hookah. I do it every now and then, but not that often. Usually come here every couple months with friends and smoke some hookah. Haven't had any of their food, but they have a decent beer selection when they have the beers in stock. They have an outside area in front of the business that nice to sit in on a cool summer night. They really need to replace their chairs and outdoor furniture; it's awful. Good place to visit at least once.

I recently reacquainted myself with Casbah after what seems like forever. Because I live on the complete opposite side of town, I rarely remember that it is here. But I'm so glad I had the chance to enjoy the Happy Hour hookah special with a friend last week since we were in the area for another event. I love the laid back atmosphere. Our server was awesome. It was a lot of fun sitting back and relaxing and having some girl time.

I had a great time here. I went on a Thursday night because I heard Friday nights and the weekends it gets really busy. Thursday night was the perfect night for my husband and I. We did a double date. We order appetizers and dessert and I haven't had such good middle eastern food in a long time. For a hookah bar I thought there would be a lot more smoke but the place wasn't smoky at all. The place was decently packed too. The only down fall was they only served wine and beer it's not a full service bar. I will be going back again.

FINALLY went here friday. My date casually mentioned Casbah and I was instantly hyped. It's like he knows all the things I have bookmarked on Yelp to try (lol) But anyway, I am an instant fan of this spot! The place was pretty packed and even the tables outside had people smoking hookah, relaxing, and eating. Now this wouldn't have been an issue....but it was raining outside. I figure, "well damn the place must be good if the people are outside in the rain!" haha. Since the place was full, we ended up sitting at the bar which wasn't bad at all. The bar tender was very sweet and attentive. We ordered 'The Duval' shisha (awesome flavor) and I ordered some cider and a chicken shawarma (which was great). I can't wait to go back again! Overall, no complaints. The crowd was very eclectic; the music was good; the decor was nice. I'm sold.

Worst hookah I've ever had, no smoke, tasteless and packed horribly. Came in as a party of 7 and our waiter Brandon was very rude and did want to help us with anything. He was not attentive and made us wait and ask for things multiple times, water refills, more beers, etc...Now, aside from that, the hummus was delicious, and that was about it. I had ordered a Kabob which was warm, not hot, and the rice that it was served with was room temperature...The bread that came with the Hummus was hot out of the oven and delicious. When we spoke to the manager, he seemed like he was going to help us, then as things escalated with the server, he made excuses for him. Not a good place for dates, group events or even for the bar, since all they have is beer and wines. I will never come back here again, but I'm giving them 2 stars because I really enjoyed the hummus, and a female server who was also assisting us was very polite, kind, attentive, and very helpful.

Casbah Cafe has great ambiance inside and out, the servers are so helpful and friendly and the food is really delicious!! The place had always been good for years and now the new owners have even improved on some of the recipes! Don't worry all your favorites are still available...Last visit we had the falafel, kibbi, jibneh and hummus with meat...all were super yummy! Monday is happy hour with drink specials and half price hookah.Go check it out and sit outside under the tree :-)

We were in the neighborhood looking for another restaurant, which ended up being closed. So we yelped our way over to Casbah and I am SO glad we did. We came for lunch on a Sunday and had a great time. It is in a cute part of town with lots of little shops and restaurants on the same street. There weren't very many people there so we grabbed a seat inside, orders and were served pretty quickly. We were in search of some good tabouli and loved what we found. We have some strict dietary restrictions and they were very helpful in giving us the information we needed. We had the chicken shawarma which was really flavorful and cooked well, tabouli and French fries. It was all delicious. I can't wait to try the hummus and grape leaves! I have heard they have belly dancers if you come at night... So that would really spice up your meal as well. My husband and I will definitely be coming back for another meal and to try the hookah.

I really enjoyed the food at this place. My wife and I ordered the shared kababs lamb & chicken. The portions are large & both of our favorites were the falafels & arabic salad. In short, this is one of our favorite restaurants.

Went here the other day for some hummus, which was amazing. It is hard to find some good hummus with some meat on it. This place did a great job though. The setting was cool, very Moroccan type feel. Also had some hookah, we tried the apple-cinnamon, which was great when the coals were hot, but they seemed to keep getting cold.

IMHO, there isn't much difference among the American based hookah lounges...so for me to even be able to analyze them, I have to look at the little things. Casbah Cafe covered them :-) Allie A. took the words out of my mouth: the intimacy (fancy word for 'small as heck' lol) adds to the atmosphere. It was a gorgeous night when my 2 girlies and I visited, so we sat outside and were very comfortable. There were strategically placed fans around the outside dining area to keep us cool and unfortunately we arrived just after the live entertainment but there was music playing and it was low enough as to not interrupt our convo. The menu selection is middle eastern and the chef did an outstanding job of keeping the authenticity of the food without sacrificing flavor and juiciness. It was kind of a long time ago when I went so bear with me on the accuracy of the meals lol I had something like a chicken/shrimp kabob with what I am guessing was jasmine rice and lots of veggies. One word: YUM! I was still tryna stuff my face even when I wasn't hungry anymore cause the flavors kept calling me lol I honestly can't remember what my gal pals had but their plates were empty and they were fully satisfied by the end of the meal. The hookahs were good but I've had better (my old shipmates and I used to dang near make a living from smoking hookah...I'm talking 4-5 times a week!). My gal pals chose fruity flavors while mine was (supposed to be) more fragrant, kind of like flowers but I wasn't that impressed. That's not to say that they weren't good; they definitly enhanced the meal without overpowering it and maybe that's the purpose of them...or maybe all 3 of us just picked lighter ones *shrug* lol Either way, they weren't bad and our server, although not as attentive as I'd like, kept an eye on our coal after the first time we had to ask him to replace it for us. Overall, a good experience that I am looking forward to again, especially now that it's warm again...can anyone say Date Night? ;-)

This place is good for casual food. The hookah is good if you're into that. The food is decent, service is usually slow but then again, it has been very busy each time I went. It's very casual, don't go here expecting a sophisticated dining experience but it's a hookah bar so what would you expect. For what it is, it's decent.

Went with my girlfriends to enjoy a ladies night and we were seated outside. I suppose we were lucky enough to get a seat at all since it was pretty busy. Took them forever to greet us at the table. Ordered drinks and a hookah and the drinks didn't come out for quite some time. We felt sprinkles of rain coming down and requested for them to see if any seats inside were available but no one bothered to come back to let us know. I had to ask another server which was not much of any help either. Can't give much more than 1 star since the service was not good and we didn't even get a chance to try the hookah we ordered since they never brought it out. Disappointed to say the least.

I love Casbah. It's small and intimate... yes, it can get a little cramped inside, but I think that adds to the experience. And also makes for easier hookah passing. On our last visit, we sat outside since the weather has been so lovely... I do enjoy hookah and on our last visit tried the Smoke Monster: an apricot, honey and strawberry blend and it was delicious! Really, really dug the honey flavor. We were just at the end of Happy Hour and our server made sure to hook us up with the HH price. :) Great beer selection for beer lovers too. We normally just order a ton of apps to share.. a few favorites are the fried Jibneh (admittedly not as good as a few other places in town, but can't really go that wrong with fried cheese in my opinion) grape leaves of course, spinach pies and the hummus. The food is good, but I think Casbah is all about the experience. And Turkish coffee. We ordered two small pots for a party of three... and ended up ordering two more. SO GOOD. We couldn't get enough. Gorgeous belly dancers, cool setting, and the service has always been "on" for us.

Monday - All day Happy Hour and 1/2 Hookah! Warm night so we decide to dine inside. The place is pretty small but provides for a nice intimate vibe. We are seated at the back corner booth. Beautiful local painting on the wall and a great view of the rest of the place. We order drafts and some strong bitter dark chocolate coffee. Extremely bitter coffee. But it paired nicely with the baklava. Guest was very impressed with the gyro wrap. Although the lamb was pressed, it was extremely juicy and flavorful. And paired it all with the Hookah Blend : Berry Delicious. Really nice and sweet pomegranate, raspberry, mango flavor. It's very smooth and I doubt anyone could hate this flavor. Hookah comes with 2 coals. And servers are pretty attentive. Entertainment was ... unique? Guitar and hookah just naturally go together. But you add the crazy singing and lyrics of this dread head hippie and it was just a little confusing. Then there was the table of drunk 18 year old seemed to piss everyone off. Excessively loud and rowdy. Then they set fire to something on their table and had the place stinking up for a few minutes. But all in all a pretty good Monday. Especially after that table left.

Its a decent spot but you gotta order a drink in order to smoke. I am new to hooka so this may be normal but I really didn't want a $4 Fiji water just to smoke a $30 hooka

I gave Casbah a three because of how terrible my service was. The place was not very busy at all the night I went but I was mostly ignored. I'm not a stickler for insanely attentive service but this was as bad as I've had in awhile. The food, beer and hookah were all fantastic, when I could get them. I had to constantly go inside to try and order things only to be told I had to wait for my server to take my order outside. This would not have been an issue if my server ever came outside. I'll be going back again, in hopes that the service is better because I really enjoyed all of the other aspects from my night there. The happy hour is a steal when it comes to ordering hookah. I mean, you can't beat 50% off. I'm looking forward to going back and adding another start for this place.

My wife and I stopped here for dinner on a Sunday night around 6:30pm. We had our dog with us so we sat on the patio. The patio was empty (probably because it was summer in Florida). The server immediately took our drink order and our drinks arrived quickly. He even brought our dog a bowl of water. We order a combo dinner and the pita pizza. The Filafel was awesome - it had a bit of kick that I hadn't had before in Filafel. The hummus with ground beef was also tasty. The pita pizza was very filling after appetizers. Did I mention the kabobs were tasty too? I thought the couscous was only so-so. The patio has fans with water spritzers but the water was turned off when we were there. Overall, I thought the service and food was excellent. My only real put off was that there is only one bathroom per gender.

We used to be big fans, but recent visits have been sub-par. The service is shoddy, food unpredictable, and the place seems to attract mostly foul mouthed youth which the management seems to tolerate. We will stay away from this place in the future.

Interesting first time experience in a hookah bar. Belly dancers, hookah smokers and diners were crammed into a relatively tight space which made the experience more intimate than I would have liked. The food was ok but I guess the attraction here is not the food but the hookah pipes and belly dancing.

I've been coming to Casbah at least once a month for ten years now. Wow. Ten years. That's with me never having never lived in the area. That says something. The atmosphere is the main attraction for me. It feels like no other place I've been in, and that unique flavor is definitely addictive. The Arabic music in the backgroud, the belly dancers on select nights, the somewhat cramped feel inside (which I find to be a good thing as I see it as rather traditional) and relaxing feel outside all seem to bring it together into the unique blend that is The Casbah. Their food is mostly excellent. It's been rare it's not some of the best I've had. Occasionally the grape leaves might be a bit dry or the meat a bit overcooked, but no more than could happen anywhere. The hummus is definitely the best I've had in Jax. My only slight gripe is that their hookahs don't seem to get changed out very often since they use the giant floor models. I understand that it's expensive to replace something that big, but after enough use it's needed. Almost every hookah in the place seems to have the lingering taste of rose or one of the other distinctive flavors which never seem to leave, which give it a bit of perfumy taste no matter what you get. Still a great place for a date, to catch up with a friend, or to hang out with a group.

There are a few things I love about Casbah, 1) Location, super awesome area, middle of everything. 2) Not quick-lite coals, they use some natural coals so they dont have that nasty chemical taste, 3) good food! Their food selection is pretty standard middle east inspired food. Their gyro wrap is delicious. And a few things that I don't love... not enough to stop me from returning mind you, but just I wish they would adjust. 1) their Beer selection is mediocre. Given that Jax has a thriving local brewery selection, I am disappointed by their chosen line of brews. 2) No mint shisha?!??!?! 3) Super loud belly dancer music. I get it, some people come for the dancers and so you want people to know when they are about to do their thing, and the girls who do it are talented, BUT.. I hate the blaring music. Its so loud I cannot continue my conversation and that always annoys me. Luckily its only on weekends! Overall a great hang out, good hookahs and food. Try it!

While this is a local hookah lounge with middle eastern food, I have been spoiled. The best Hummus and baba ganoush I've had was in Jerusalem last December. That said the food here is not bad, with a decent selection of bottled beers to choose from. My main complaints are its noisy and when the belly dancers come on to dance, the music level is crazy loud for such a small place. So when I go with friends, we make sure to go early to avoid the belly dancers. They do a nice job, its just that I value my hearing more.

  • Eric L.

Really fun. Even if you're not into hookahs, the sweet smell is really pleasant and, unlike cigarette smoke, doesn't irritate. It gives the place a real "other worldly" feel. Service with a smile and a real dose of culture watching the belly dancing. Authentic food served with a smile. So flavorful and filling. Nice beer selection. Patio is awesome. Get the combo with the kabobs so you can try several mezze (small plates). The hummus and egg plant dip are similar so try one or the other and the yogurt dip. Great falafel. If you're tired of the same ol' burger and fries, this place will make you forget about American cuisine.

My dream vacation is to go to Istanbul. And since it will be a while until I can make it to Turkey, I will settle for local restaurants that can give me a small taste of what the real thing is like. In steps Casbah Cafe. First, the hummus - to die for. So fresh and tasty. Made perfectly! And the bread served with it was some of the best flat bread I have ever had. You can tell they make it fresh and in-house. I love the vast choices in beers, wines and alcohol they have to chose from. Rare to find a place that has more than 1 hard cider on tap. I had the combo for one and the fried cheese I selected for it was almost heavenly. The chicken kabob took forever to arrive but well worth the wait. And the couscous was very airy and light. It was a pretty good meal and we had a great porch to enjoy it on during this great weather. The only complaint is the service was a bit slow. We kept wondering where our kabobs were and when our waiter would be returning. I did not have the hookah this time but everyone around me was partaking and they all smelt so fresh and delicious. I will definitely have to have some myself next time.

Just came from the Middle East so it was nice to find a place where they serve original Middle Eastern food. Lebnah is by far my favorite and the one I found at this restaurant is very tasty and seems authentic. The sheesha pipes are nice and they seem to have a variety of flavors. The atmosphere is nice. Will definitely go back.

This is one of my favorite places - to come by myself during the day and sit and write and drink wine and smoke a hookah, to come at night with friends and chat and watch belly dancers. The food is great, you get a lot of food for the money, and it's a really cozy atmosphere. Have the swordfish kebabs!

Love eating at the Casbah, easy in and out, great patio and fantastic beverage selection. I especially enjoy the Tuna Fish sandwich in a grilled cheese pita. It is a great way to enjoy lunch. Fantastic patio and great beverage selection. I went there again today and had my sandwich as well as I-10 in a can. They have Intuition People's on draft but no I-10 on draft. Note to self!

This is my favorite restaurant in Jax. The environment is the best part: everyone is relaxing with coffee, tea, beer, or a hookah. The food is delicious. If you're lucky enough, they have a belly dancer on the weekends. The only drawback is that it's a small space and you could end up waiting a long time on the weekends. Nonetheless it's worth it.

My first time here & it was an amazing experience. Being new to the Hookah scene, my waitress explained everything to me. Whatever I was looking for she had an answer. I had the Sweet Love & it was mellow just like me :) There was a live Jazz band & the gentleman were very pleasant, spoke to everyone. Nice wine selection, not much of a beer drinker but they had a verity of that also. I didn't order any food this time because I had already ate, but from what I saw on other tables, it looked good! I definitely plan on going again, Soon! Nice place for couples & friends to enjoy a evening out. Will be adding Casbah to the list! Excellent service, Genuine smiles, Loved it! Can't wait to go back!

I thoroughly enjoy an evening at the Casbah and usually order the same thing every time: Mezze Combo and lamb kabobs. On my last visit (earlier this week) I ordered the Maftool (spelling?) instead. It features large grain couscous, chick peas, spices and chicken. Wow! It was so flavorful - a new favorite. For the Mezze Combo, we shared falafel, grape leaves and hummus. The hummus comes with pita bread fresh out of the oven. Don't be put off by the look of the falafel...while the individual pieces are dark and crisp on the outside, they are tender light on the inside. We are usually too full to order dessert, but I sat across from the dessert case and was really tempted. Everything in it looked yummy. Maybe next time!

I am really sad to write this, but I did not have a good experience here. So much so that we left before they sat us. Three friends and I walked up on a Friday night. They seemed fairly busy and were told it would be a fifteen to twenty minute wait. No problem. We went to the bar. There wasn't a lot of room, so we decided to brave the cold outside. They had heaters, but only near the tables and I didn't want to hover over other people. Twenty minutes, thirty minutes. Hmm. We see some seats open at the bar, but a rude guy tells us he is holding them for a friend in the bathroom and the bellydancer. His friend comes out of the bathroom and they each use the two remaining seats as footrests. (I know this isn't the restaurants fault, but it didn't help.) Then we see a party of six be sat. Wait a minute, didn't they show up after us? We ask the hostess when our table will be ready. "You're next," she replies. After shivering for another ten minutes and watching the hostess do nothing but text, we walked out. On the way out I stole a glance at their roster and sure enough, the party of six came in after us and were definitely sat first. Boo. We walked down to Mojo's instead. There was a great band playing some 60s Motown. The service there was great but the night had already been ruined from our time at the Casbah.

Considering you are in Jax, I have to say this place is a pretty solid choice for a decent, relaxing night out. If for nothing else, it brings some diversity of choice in one of the better looking neighborhoods in town. The food is good, not great but I love the decor and I just always had a great time here for happy hour (or after hours) with some brews, appetizers, and hookah. It's really a great way to kick off or end your night.

  • Ryan D.

Food still great, and service has improved the last several time I have dined here. Not a huge fan of their hookah. It lacks in flavor, and seems to have the ashy taste to it. Other places serve better hookahs with better flavors. I notice that most of their hookahs will taste good the first couple of puffs, but then it just tastes like ash. Get it right! Then again, I come here for the meal and enjoying the company of friends.

  • Charles S.

If you are in to the whole hookah smoking thing (still?), I would recommend this place. The food is nothing to rave about, and the fact that you have smoke blowing in your face the whole time can make eating the sub-par food a little more difficult to eat than it already is. I have had more bad experiences with their service than good ones too. However, the beer selection is pretty extensive which is cool.

Love the vibe..and of course shishas! I have sat both indoors and outdoors on the patio and both are great. For chilly nights the patio heaters warm you right up! The belly dancers are great--I only go if they are there! Come early (8-9) if not, you will wait between 30-45 minutes before being seated.

Casbah is one of the things that I truly miss about Jacksonville! The middle eastern food is truly exceptional. The lamb kabobs are so deliciously seasoned and the meat is soooo tender. Honestly, everything I've tried is delicious. You cannot go wrong with any of their dishes. It's also a great place to go to get some of their excellent tea and smoke a lil' hookah. They have a ton of flavors. I love the ambience of the place. On weekend nights they usually have belly dancers or some type of entertainment to add to the atmosphere. It gets packed on Friday and Saturday nights, so definitely go early or you will be waiting in line FOREVER. The place is tiny... so you will wait for a table. I am not ashamed to say that one of the reasons I drive up to Jax is to go eat at Casbah!

This was one of my FAVORITE places to go before we moved away. The food is great, the atmosphere is great, and the hookahs are great. And I love seeing belly dancers who actually know how to dance. The Casbah is good for anything... it's got intimate seating if you're on a date, or you can go with a group of friends and have a fun night out. I cannot recommend this place highly enough!!

I've been to Casbah a number of times and it's always been a great time. Casbah is a Middle Eastern restaurant that also is a hookah lounge and does a good business in both regards. I don't smoke, so I can't comment really on the hookah experience however my friends who have indulged in hookahs when we've been there seemed pleased. The Middle Eastern food at Casbah is a mixed bag: the quality overall is pretty good, but when they're busy (mainly late at night) some of the food seems weak. A good example of such would be my stuffed grape leaves (dolmas) which seemed bland and soggy. The hummus and zeit wa zater were very good however, as was the fried kibbie. The atmosphere is what you'd expect: a lot of maroon cushy things to sit on and a dark, cozy, feel to the place overall while Warda plays on the stereo. In response to Brandon B's comments about the "kids" who come to Casbah only for hookah: I know the sort you mean, and you may have even included my friends and I in this lot (despite the fact we were also ordering food and drink and I am not a kid but just as "adult" as you, Mr. Brandon -- sorry that I still look young and fresh). Look, if you have a place that stays open late and is a hookah lounge you will attract teens and college-aged kids who want a place to hang out. They do order stuff, be it a hookah or soda or food just like older folks do too, and they don't make fun of you for being who you are so try not to lable them as "preps" or whatever worse. You know? Who is really acting like a child here? In fact, one things I felt was really cool about Casbah was that I saw preppy kids there, goth kids there, and older couples there all having a good time. Jacksonville needs more places like this.
